Josh Homme kind of ruined the new Arctic Monkeys album for me. Actually, ruined is kind of harsh because it’s still a very enjoyable listen. The problem I have is that Homme’s hand in the recording process is far too noticeable. I have a problem with producers who take too much of a hands-on approach on an album because it’s not their band. I wasn’t there and there is no way to ever know if my perception is accurate in the least, but I feel like Homme overstepped his bounds and it almost seems like the band felt that they couldn’t speak up for themselves.

What I’ve always found so endearing about the AMs is their penchant for finding the perfectly retro hook. In their last two albums they were completely unafraid of sounding pop and wrote great songs as a result. I’ve always likened their sound to the way that early punk was essentially doo-wop with the volume up. AMs’ sound flirts in the same way with the new wave, post punk of the 80s and that is exactly what’s missing from Humbug. The record almost sounds more like Queens of the Stone Age in an alternate universe where The Last Shadow Puppets decided to track vocals. Again, it doesn’t make it a bad album. It just makes it a bad Arctic Monkeys album (in my opinion).

So there’s my two cents. Listen to “Cornerstone” if you want to hear the highlight of Humbug.

Noe musikkpressen i Storbritannia er gode til, så er det å hype band langt opp i skyene. Der blir ofte bandene værende en kort periode, før de faller hardt og brutalt ned i bakken og forsvinner fra søkelyset. De gangene jeg har kjøpt Classic Rock er det gjerne en reportasje eller en anmeldelse, som mer enn gjerne hinter om at dette bandet kan bli det nye The Beatles, eller Oasis om du vil. Øya har utvilsomt dype tradisjoner innen musikken de kan være stolte over. Listen er så lang over gode artister og band at jeg ikke orker å nevne et eneste ett.  Ofte kjører nyere band på med referanser til eldre band, både i kleskode, cover, tekster og musikk. Kjekt for kjennerne med beatnik-sveis. For meg betyr det ikke så mye. Sikkert fordi jeg sjelden skjønner hentydningene. 

Snøapene vet å ta seg et bad, lukke øynene og høre på god musikk mellom slagene.

Jeg har helt siden jeg leste om Arctic Monkeys for noen år siden, tenkt at de falt inn under denne kategorien; Blåst opp i dag, borte i morgen. I kveld har jeg ved siden av å glede meg over at nå er det helg, hørt litt på hva de har laget. Jeg skjønner godt at de har blitt så store som de har og hvorfor de har holdt seg flyvende. Jeg digger denne videoen.

Kjeltringene i The Rascals kan en gjerne sette i samme kategori som apene.

No, no es alemán. Ni siquiera holandés.

Es un término complejo que podría definirse así: “fin de semana que comienza con una frenética preparación de tuperwares con diversos contenidos para los más variopintos fines”.

Y es que cuando una es una amantísima madre de sus cobayitas, y se va de fin de semana a casa del supernovio (a la que no puede llevárselas), necesita dejarlo todo atado y bien atado. Lo que significa dejar los pertinentes tupperwares rebosantes de deliciosas verduritas cortadas, a punto para que el alma caritativa de turno (mi compañera de piso), se las de a las fieras corrupias a la hora de comer.

Y además, cuando una va a casa agena, por muy invitada que sea, necesita llevar algo que la haga quedar más como una reina agradecida, y menos como una liendre o garrapata. Lo que significa hacer también otro tupperware, este de galletas (las de la entrada anterior), para deleitar a la familia política, que a esos también se les gana por el estómago.

Sólo queda finiquitar la maleta (que podría considerarse incluso como otro tupperware… con cremallera), y estaré lista para huir rumbo noroeste. Ay, qué ganas…

Final Fantasy, la banda encabezada por Owen Pallett, violinista reconocido por sus colaboraciones con bandas como Arcade Fire o Beirut, en las que siempre deja su inconfundible sello, ha anunciado que publicará su tercer disco en enero de 2010, se titulará Heartland y contará con interesantes colaboraciones: Arcade Fire y The Last Shadow Puppets. Y además ha sido remezclado por Rusty Santos, de Animal Collective.

Todo esto hace que esté ya contando las horas para el día del lanzamiento, unido a que últimamente no puedo parar de escuchar sus dos álbumes anteriores (Has A Good Home (2005) y He Poos Clouds (2006), que recomiendo encarecidamente, junto con sus EPs y algunas colaboraciones, muchos de ellos disponibles en Spotify).

 The Age Of The Understandment

Bem, muita gente já conhece esta banda, quero dizer muita gente que acompanha o Artic Monkeys e The Rascal… Confesso que não conheço muito essas mencionadas; com a junção de Alex Turner e Miles Kane respectivamente surgiu tal ambição,  mas não é que esse The Last Shadow Puppets é bom mesmo!

Meu é uma banda difícil de rotular, mas nem precisa pois você ouve despreocupado; digamos que seja um som mais adulto com letras bem elaboradas sobre sentimentos o que diga-se de passagem é o que eu ando interessado no momento talvez por estar mais velho já não tenho procurado assuntos como guerra, política, assuntos sociais, morte, espiríto, filosofia etc; digo que não tenho procurado isso nas músicas pois ainda são assuntos relevantes do meu cotidiano.

Bem, a banda sai um pouco do clichê “guitarras” e é valorizada a parte vocal, são dois vocalistas que você nem percebe quando um ou outro está cantando. É um som de muito bom gosto que soa novo mas também remeti-me ao anos 80’s sem soar datado; também possui muitos arranjos orchestrados que se você não prestar atenção também não vai perceber. Vale a pena conhecer pois é uma banda muito interessante para quem está com a mente aberta e sai dessa fase (emo-dice) que vivemos hoje. O The Last Shadow Puppets teve considerado um dos melhores albuns em 2008. Não vou me aprofundar na descrição pois já faz um tempinho que foi lançado e se procurar ja tem  um monte de resenhas por aí confiram!

Essa banda apareceu do nada em minha vida e foi muito bom quando isso acontece em vários sentidos hehehe! Bem, eu já conhecia um pouco de Artic Monkeys mas também não muito, o que quero dizer com isso é que é uma extenção, pois trata-se de um projeto do vocalista. Bem, estava eu vendo MTv de manhã quando vi o video deles, imediatamente pensei que fosse uma banda mais antiga por causa do visual e do estilo do video, porém a sonoridade não era, fiquei intrigado e fui pesquisar… Meu que banda legal, sai fora do já visto, isto é, não tem guitarras estridentes e tal, uma orquestra a acompanha mas quase não se percebe. Bem, além do “post” aqui no blog vão ouvir falar bem dela em qualquer pesquisa na net por tanto não vou me estender. É uma banda pra quem tá com a cabeça já mais aberta, ousam e tirem suas conclusões.

aber auch ohne bild (zusammen gehts leider gar nicht…) dank guter soundqualität zu empfehlenswert:

Not always does a good night sleep and a hearty breakfast help you get your shit together and get on with your day.

OK, ok! Easy. I’ll just speak for myself then.

In my defense, it doesn’t help that my TASK BOARD still says it’s Saturday, while at the same time, I’ve  been convinced since last night that today is Friday (the day I’m taking Jason on a date to a secret location). Meanwhile, a strange man with a nice, deep voice says to me on the radio that today is Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Hmmm.

My reality today is convoluted to such an extent that I bounce from one place to another with a heavy chip on my shoulder. I know I should be writing now, but the very thought of it makes me spin 180 degrees on my bare heels and go sweep the neighbor’s stoop. Next, I focus on my hands as they scream for attention, and suddenly I find myself performing a home manicure – a task I normally dread like the chicken pox. Once the bright red polish is splashed all over my nails, it’s the silence in the room that gets me at last.

I fan my  froggy fingers out over the keyboard of my computer, open iTunes and break out the jams. It’s not until The Last Shadow Puppets begin to play that I decide it’s time to turn the volume UP,  prepare my stage,  move the chair out of the range of my high-kick, place Cosmo on the balcony of our bed and GET MY GROOVE ON. While the music blasts from the speakers, I jump and throw my hands in the air, stretch in all directions, bounce my shoulders, bend to the sides, thrash my hips back and forth, and give the “dance” MY ESSENCE. Gasping for air, I look at Cosmo, and a bright smile wraps it’s way around my glossy face like a red bow on a Christmas gift. He just yawns at me with mere disapproval: “Mother, REALLY??!”

After being scolded by my very own dog, I curl my tail under my own bottom, shut down the music box, and shuffle my feet to the kitchen hoping to get some LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING from an oozing, chocolate mini-cupcake. One thing leads to another, and within minutes, I’m prepping lunch. On the menu today… an Avocado Turkey Sandwich with a side of a Quinoa Salad. I’m confident after this meal I’ll have a work out that would make Michael Phelps crawl out of his pool humiliated and in tears.

Speaking of Sammies, they play an important role in our household, especially since Jason returned to work and I took on the temporary role of “little wifey”, which nota bene suits me shockingly well. The part I play entails my rising at dawn along with my beau and tending to his feeding needs. While Jason assures me he’s perfectly capable of getting a bowl of cereal in the morning, I won’t have such nonsense and proceed to fill his bowl with a cherry picked mix of breakfast grains topped with a rainbow of sliced fruit, all soaked in an ocean of almond milk.

While the boy crunches away, I move on to the next task at hand which consists of assembling his lunch and dexterously fitting the mountain of food into the 2 compartments of his teeny-weeny lunchbox.

If there are no leftovers from the previous night’s dinner (which is the case 3 out of 4 times), I grab from the refrigerator whatever I can hold in my arms and build a Mothership of all Sandwiches. I start with two slices of HEALTHY bread, which unfortunately in many cases tend to taste like old tennis shoes. Particularly the low sodium Ezekiel Bread which is as exciting as a chess match!

Let me pause here for a second. If it wasn’t for a pile of SPARKLING NEW jeans that are an entire two (2) sizes smaller than the last pants I bought, I would be slathering both sides of ciabatta bread with mayonnaise and topping it with 1-inch thick chunks of chicken, beefy slices of mozzarella, tomato and a basil leaf. I have wet dreams about  Italian breads, rustic French baguettes and country rolls. In fact, I’m drooling a little bit right now with nothing more than the mere image of them!

How do I turn that ugly ducking of Ezekiel Bread into Cinderella? I have a trick (or two) that (lucky for you) I’ve decided to no longer keep to myself.

My secret is to make the sandwich relatively MOIST, but not soggy. Second, you want to keep it versatile and exciting. The sky is the limit when it comes to building a sandwich! Think outside the box. Instead of always going for the good ‘ol mayo, use a low-fat version mixed into a coherent cream with a teaspoon of Dijon mustard. Or forget about mayo altogether and spread a little hummus on your bread topped with slices of heirloom tomato and pickles under an umbrella of a few spinach leaves. You can buy a flavored one, or just make your own Hummus. The EDAMAME DIP you just tried this week for the first time will go swimmingly with a few thin slices of low sodium turkey, maybe a little of Monterey Jack and a slice of Tomato, all sprinkled with finely chopped chives and packed between the slices of bread.

Being Polish, I bring my Polish twist to the table, and when the sandwich is for here and not to go I like to keep it open. It’s an ideal surface for a tablespoon of cottage cheese, green onions and crunchy Persian cucumbers. That’s today. Tomorrow, get yourself a ripe avocado, slice the meat and spread it generously over your bread. Cover with turkey/chicken/ham, and top with thick slices of hard-boiled egg – don’t forget to sprinkle it with a dust of salt and pepper. The next day, make a Tuna Salad and use it as filling in your sammy. And if you grew up convinced radishes taste like dirt, here’s your chance to bring back the magic and believe in Santa  all over again – slice one radish and hide it between the layers of your tuna sandwich. Not only will you have that extra crunch, but also vitamins and minerals you’ve deprived yourself all your life.

Have you ever tried Mascarpone cheese? It’s good not only in a Tomato Sauce for your pasta, or in cakes, but can also serve as a foundation for your – exactly! – next day sandwich. You can cover it with slices of meat, cheese, roasted peppers, onion, cucumber, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, and fresh herbs (basil, dill, mint, tarragon, etc.) Same thing goes for Pesto. You can have an exciting, delicious sandwich every day at work, and it will never taste the same. Bring a smile back to your SAMMY.

One last thing to keep in mind - do NOT overcrowd the guy. Don’t pile up everything under the sun onto your slice of bread.   After all, you want to be able to wrap your mouth around that bad boy, don’t you?

I could go on, and I’m positive there will be more opportunities to talk sandwiches. Hell, I’ll make sure of it. Today’s article will at least get you started. It’s like opening Pandora’s Box of Sandwiches. From now on the ideas will never stop coming. They will flood your mind, your lunchbox, and your kitchen. You’ll feel overwhelmed with the creative powers that will suddenly take over and you’ll start feeding your coworkers, your neighbors, and even your dog. Each Sammy will be a Gourmet Concert of Wild and Exotic Flavors clasped within the crunchy arms of two slices of toasted bread waiting to be domesticated in your mouth.

Now go and unleash your inner Sandwich Snob. Then tame the beast with your creations. Have fun with it!

Pearl Jam / Backspacer – Como uma resposta para aqueles que sempre acharam os discos do Pearl Jam pós Ten meio experimentalistas, Backspacer é uma continuação direta do disco que os mostrou ao mundo. As músicas são ágeis, chicletes e, ainda assim, sensacionais. Diferente das propostas anteriores, nada de sanfonas, paradas de som no meio da música, bandolins, nada disso. Ele já começa com um rockn´roll basicão em Gonna See my Friend, emendando na ótima Got Some (minha preferida do disco) e a terceira é a música que apresentou o disco novo The Fixer. Se ouviu e gostou, vai gostar demais do novo trabalho do Pearl Jam. Recomendo. E muito!

Arnaldo Antunes / Iê Iê Iê – Sou suspeito pra falar do ex-titã, pois gosto muito do seu trabalho não apenas na esfera musical, mas também nas outras segmentações a que se dedicou. Mesmo assim, Iê Iê Iê me surpreendeu tanto, mas tanto que fica difícil encontrar algum defeito no disco. É como se o Arnaldo tivesse nascido alguns anos antes e começado a sua carreira solo na década de 60, bem no meio da beatlemania, Rita Pavone e Jovem Guarda. O resultado disso é um disco divertidíssimo, com manias e instrumentos da época, com aquele toque da poesia cartunesca popular do vocalista, mas em um ambiente contemporâneo e moderno. Se a mistura funcionou bem? É um dos melhores discos do ano pra mim. E se você não gosta do Arnaldo por causa dos discos anteriores, acho que deveria dar uma chance para este, porque soa como o trabalho mais pop do cantor. Recomendo muito!

Arctic Monkeys / Humbug – O primeiro disco da banda, Whatever People Say I Am, That´s What I´m Not chegou como uma pancada na monotonia com seus acordes ágeis, letras cortantes e a voz nasalada de Alex Turner. Um dos melhores discos que já ouvi na vida e um sucesso de crítica e público. O segundo, Favorite Worst Nightmare, manteve o ritmo, mas não a pegada. O punch inicial havia se desfeito, mas gerando ainda boas músicas e ritmo. O terceiro trabalho do Arctic Monkeys, Humbug, chega a ser monótono. É triste dizer isso, mas é verdade. As músicas são densas demais, triviais e parecem estar dentro de uma introspectividade latente. Curti não.

you know I love them…

D’emblée… récapitulons : lancé en janvier 2006, le premier album de Arctic Monkeys, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, les propulsa instantannément au firmament de l’indie-rock. Surfant sur la hype qui l’entourait, le groupe continua sur sa lancée en jettant sur les tablettes dans l’année qui suivi, coup sur coup, un EP – Who the Fuck are the Arctic Monkeys? - ainsi qu’un single hors-album – Leave Before the Lights Come on - pour enfin sortir, un an et demi après le premier, en avril 2007, un second long-jeu, Favourite Worst Nightmare, tout aussi bien accueilli. Si le groupe prit ensuite une petite pause, ce ne fut toutefois pas le cas du chanteur, Alex Turner, qui tabla sur un groupe parrallèle – The Last Shadow Puppets – qui nous offrit une très bonne galette en avril 2008. Et nous voilà, en août 2009, avec un quatrième album en moins de 4 ans pour Mr. Turner avec le Humbug des singes. Un rythme digne des années ‘60, quoi. (Pendant ce temps, The Strokes, qui a lancé son dernier album – First Impressions of Earth – avant le premier album des Arctic Monkeys n’a rien sorti depuis et est en principe encore en activité…)

 Dès la première écoute, l’on remarque que les gars de Sheffield (Grande-Bretagne, évidemment) ont ralenti quelque peu la cadence par rapport aux deux précédents albums. Néanmoins, le son est plus lourd. Lourd comme les premiers enregistrements métal - on y décèle quelques traits du Black Sabbath sale des débuts, celui encore teinté de psychédélisme, ou même celui de Queens of the Stone Age… normal son chanteur, Josh Homme, réalise 7 des 10 pièces (James Ford reprend du service pour les 3 autres).

Ainsi donc, guitares, batterie et basse ralentissent la cadence et sonnent un peu plus rond dans l’ensemble. La voix d’Alex Turner se fait aussi un peu plus basse et plus patiente, elle a un peu plus de soul même, elle excelle de plus en plus dans les moments les plus doux. Dans le même registre, des choeurs très bien arrangés (et non des réponses criardes comme auparavant) viennent agrémenter quelques uns des titres.

 L’ouverture, My Proppeler qui agence claviers et guitare acoustique avec un riff que ne renierait pas Metallica, table d’emblée sur les changements que j’ai déjà énoncés. Si elle démare en trombe, elle se calme rapidement pour évoluer tranquillement avec des choeurs et une certaine texture inédite au groupe. Suit le premier simple Crying Lightning, avec sa basse lourde et où on retrouve le son de guitare western spaghetti déjà travaillé sur Favourite Worst Nightmare.  Même chose avec Dangerous Animals, qui aurait certainement trouvé sa place sur ce dernier, mais qui symbolise tout de même à merveille la lourdeur nouvellement empruntée avec un riff relativement headbanger tout comme plus tard Pretty Visitors, qui rappelle The Horrors.

Puis avec Secret Door les Monkeys adoucissent le pas, sans nécessairement ralentir la cadence, et signent ici selon moi l’un de leurs meilleurs titres et l’un des plus émouvants. Bien travaillée, se développant tranquillement, elle aboutit à une finale tout en choeurs magistrale. Les relents de The Last Shadow Puppets y sont certes évidents, mais après l’expérimentation, la maîtrise est faite.

L’album reprend son cours avec Potion Approaching toujours lourd (particulièrement au pont) et salaud. Sur Fire and the Thud, Arctic Monkeys prend résolumment une tournure plus psyché, on se croirait dans un désert du western américain – la signature Josh Homme porte donc ses fruits tout comme Dance Little Liar où le groupe fait l’honneur à Alison Mosshart, de The Kills aux choeurs, d’être la première voix féminine sur un album du groupe. Ensuite, avec Cornestone, on retourne à une sonorité déjà travaillée sur des b-sides tels que No Buses ou The Bakery, Alex Turner s’y fait très lover. La finale, The Jeweller’s Hands, quant à elle, surprend par la richesse de sa texture et ouvre une nouvelle porte pour les prochains soubresauts du groupe…

Tout de même, je ne sens pas que Humbug soit une cassure, l’évolution qu’on y retrouve est tout à fait logique et bienvenue. Il est clair que l’épisode de The Last Shadow Puppets a marqué le travail du groupe, qui en a retenu d’excellentes leçon. Le canon de Arctic Monkeys s’en trouve donc plus qu’enrichi.

Enfin… Meilleur que les deux précédents? Je n’irais pas jusqu’à affirmer ceci, puisque l’album ne contient pas selon moi autant de hits que ceux-ci, mais il pourrait peut-être mieux vieillir que avec ses arrangements plus texturés ainsi que ses paroles plus réfléchies.

O que podíamos esperar do terceiro disco do Arctic Monkeys? Confesso que, mesmo considerando-os uma das melhores bandas da década, eu não sabia se Alex Turner e cia. teriam muito mais a nos apresentar. Em seus dois primeiros discos, eles haviam encontrado uma fórmula perfeita – com canções rápidas, dançantes e melódicas – mas que já não parecia oferecer novas formas de ser explorada. E numa época em que tendências e modismos envelhecem da noite para o dia, render-se ao “mais do mesmo” nunca soou tão démodé.

Os Monkeys tinham então um grande desafio pela frente, o de provar que não eram apenas mais uma ótima banda, com prazo de validade curto. E não podemos dizer que eles não se prepararam. Foram lá no deserto californiano buscar a ajuda de Josh Homme, trouxeram de volta James Ford (produtor do Favourite Worst Nightmare e do Last Shadow Puppets) e trabalharam por cerca de um ano em cima das novas canções. O resultado é Humbug – termo que pode ser traduzido como “fraude” –, lançado oficialmente no final de agosto.

A primeira impressão causada pelo álbum é de certa desconfiança. O som está bastante mudado, o ritmo desacelerou e as músicas adquiriram uma feição mais séria e um clima retrô, meio sessentista – como se vê claramente em faixas como “Secret Door” e “Fire And The Thud”. Mas ao final da última música, a sensação é de que algo está faltando. Talvez aquele arrebatamento que Whatever People Say I Am… causava. Ou aquela vontade de escutar o disco inteiro novamente que Favourite Worst Nightmare fazia você sentir.

Mas se Humbug está longe de ser fantástico como seus antecessores, ele também possui seus méritos. E méritos capazes de justificá-lo e fazê-lo valer a pena. A começar pelas próprias mudanças citadas anteriormente. Afinal, elas vêm responder exatamente à questão colocada lá na primeira linha do texto. Com um estilo renovado, o quarteto inglês mostra que tem ainda fôlego para buscar alternativas que levem o som da banda adiante – ao contrário de bandas como o Strokes, que optaram por um caminho aparentemente mais cômodo, mas que acabou se revelando uma rua sem saída.

A empreitada de Alex Turner com seu amigo Miles Kane já havia sido uma indicação de que cair na mesmice não era com ele. O Last Shadow Puppets nasceu exatamente da vontade de fazer um som diferente do que havia na época. E as influências que eles buscaram em bandas como Love e The Animals voltam a dar as caras em Humbug, ainda que de forma menos explícita. Até mesmo músicas do próprio Arctic, presentes em Favourite Worst Nightmare, já sugeriam pistas, involuntárias ou não, do que viria a seguir. “Only Ones Who Knows” e “505″, por exemplo, não se distanciam muito do que vemos nesse novo disco. E em Humbug, são justamente as faixas mais calmas, como “Cornerstone” e a já citada “Secret Door”, que proporcionam os melhores momentos.

Passado o choque inicial, dá até para reconhecer certas marcas da identidade sonora do grupo que se mantiveram. As linhas de baixo acentuadas de Nick O’Malley ainda estão presentes na maioria das canções. Alex traz novamente ótimas letras, conservando o jeito alegórico de descrever as cenas de suas histórias (“With folded arms you occupy the bench like toothache / Saw them, puff your chest out like you never lost a war”). E no final do disco, temos até um pouco daquele ritmo frenético de volta na faixa “Pretty Visitors”.

Assim, Humbug cumpre seu discreto papel de abrir novas possibilidades para o som da banda, sem descaracterizá-los completamente. Se não é este disco que fará os Monkeys serem lembrados num futuro distante, é ele que ao menos os levará até a próxima década. Pois com Humbug, esses quatro ingleses nos dão uma consistente prova de que “fraude” é algo do qual eles definitivamente não podem ser chamados.

Dio salvi la Regina, ma soprattutto conservi intatto il talento di Alex Turner. In questo sporco mondo che è quello della critica musicale dicono che il terzo album, per una band, sia quello decisivo, quello della consacrazione. Il primo è la novità, l’epifania, la ventata d’aria fresca che di solito spazza via le ragnatele dalle orecchie di ogni indie-addicted. Così, se vi ricordate, fu per Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006), primo lavoro degli Arctic Monkeys, che dalla ‘city of seven hills’, Sheffield, vennero per diffondere il loro rock colorato di neo-punk danzereccio, stiloso e punteggiato. Il 2007 fu invece l’anno di quel capolavoro assoluto che è My Favourite Worst Nightmare, seconda fatica di Turner & Co., ancor più sorprendente del precedente perché asciugato di tutta una serie di ghirigori superflui e arricchito da una consapevolezza: il songwriting del leader dei Monkeys aveva raggiunto vette inattese e quantomai benvenute.

Passano due anni, Turner nel frattempo si dedica con successo al progetto The Last Shadow Puppets (duo che si completa con la presenza di Miles Kane dei Rascals), e anche grazie alle ottime cose sentite in The Age of the Understatement (unico album dei Puppets straordinariamente accompagnati per l’occasione dalla London Metropolitan Orchestra) cresce l’hype per il terzo album dei Monkeys.

In realtà, alla vigilia, di cosa sarà questo Humbug si sa poco o nulla, almeno fino alla clamorosa rivelazione: gran parte del disco sarà prodotto da quella vecchia volpe di Josh Homme, mastermind dei Queens Of The Stone Age. Lecito immaginarsi un cambio di direzione dunque. E anche piuttosto drastico. Che sfida, ragazzi: le scimmie artiche, gli eredi di Paul Weller, che espatriano nel deserto americano guidati dal santone dell’hard rock a caccia del Graal del suono. Poteva essere un esperimento andato male, ne è venuta fuori una bomba.

Badate, Humbug è tutt’altro che un disco semplice. L’orecchio non abituato farà fatica ad adattarsi alle frasi, mai banali, che ne costituiscono il racconto. Ma tant’è, this is indie-rock’n'roll gentlemen. Sensibilmente più ’scuro’ degli altri lavori della band di Sheffield, Humbug è certamente più maturo, è evidentemente molto più un disco di ‘ricerca’ che di attestazione di qualcosa di assodato. ‘Intimo’ è la parola giusta. La presenza di Homme si sente eccome: nelle chitarre soprattutto – lecito aspettarselo – ma più in generale nell’atmosfera ’sabbiosa’, ’secca’, ’stone-aged’, di tutto il disco. Zio Josh ha detto ai ragazzi «fatemi sentire qualcosa», insomma, «e vediamo cosa ne viene fuori».

Lo spirito danzereccio che fu lascia spazio a ritmi meno serrati, ma non per questo meno accattivanti, mentre le capacità di scrittura di Turner – le linee vocali del nostro sono più diluite, ragionate, meno nevrotiche – coinvolgono a ogni ascolto un po’ di più. Nonostante tutto, Humbug è e resterà un disco di ‘canzoni’, dieci tracce che ti crescono dentro con il passare del tempo, da My Propeller a The Jeweller’s Hands, passando per il singolo Crying Lightning e per la meravigliosa Fire And The Thud (featuring la zuccherosissima Alison Mosshart in qualità di back vocals), forse la cosa migliore.
Un album che se non ripete il botto di My Favourite Worst Nightmare è solo perché chi ha talento, e le scimmie ne hanno a pacchi, non si ripete. Mai.

Il y a un moment que le single des Arctic Monkeys Crying Lightning circule sur le web. J’étais un peu ahurie sur la première écoute. Il faut dire que les Arctic Monkeys avaient pris l’habitude sur les précédents album de dissimuler leur dark side sous une bonne couche d’ironie et de riffs sautillants. Mais là c’est sombre à souhait, un peu à la Last Shadow Puppets ou à la Queens of the Stone Age. Peut être est ce l’influence des producteurs ? (Josh Homme membre des Queens of the Stone Age et James Ford producteur des LSP) Ou peut être encore que cette noirceur qui ressort tout à coup est due à la fameuse formule troisième album de la maturité ?
Bref, c’est différent mais pas à jeter et je trouve que ce morceau devient de plus en plus agréable après chaque écoute.

J’ai toujours adoré les textes d’Alex Turner mais là il fait vraiment très fort. Pour ceux qui sont fâchés avec l’anglais et qui comptaient sur le rythme “Ahh mon dieu je contrôle plus mes pieds ils dansent tous seuls” pour rattraper ça va être un peu limite je crois.
L’album Humbug est disponible dans les stores depuis le 24 août. J’ai hâte de pouvoir l’écouter en entier, les Arctic Monkeys me manquaient vraiment trop.
