Yo personalmente prefiero no imaginármelo. Somos como dijo Kevin Kelly en Wired, la web,“We Are The Web”.

Estamos enseñando a la máquina que somos nosotros, “The Machine is us(ing) us”.

“The Machine is Us/ing Us”

This short video is a perfect example of how the computer and internet has changed the way people do work. I liked in the beginning when they had the person writing thoughts down and then constantly erasing them and writing new ideas down how sloppy it looked. But, then they showed how clear and nice digital text is which is what we find on computers. Also this video shows the complexity of the internet. I thought when they showed that over 100 billion people click on a web page everyday was amazing and that clearly shows that the internet has taken over. One web page can display so much information and have hundreds of links to other pages. I thought that was interesting. The computer/internet has really changed the way humans think.

1) Do you feel that the internet is running our lives?

2) Without the invention of the computer or internet do you think our country would be as successful as it is today?

————————————————————————————————————————————-

“Watch this 10 minute video of Clay Shirky”

The overview of this video was centralized around LOVE. He basically said the more people come together and care about each other and their problems the better off everyone is. He suggested a good way of doing this would be to post for example, questions on a blog about how you fix something or do something you do not know. Then the millions of users on the internet will see it or at least hundreds of users will run into your question and respond on what they think you should do to solve your problem. I think it was cool how he posted a question on a blog before he had a meeting and by the end of the meeting someone had already answered the question. This is a good way to solve the many problems and questions thousands of people go through each day.

1) Do you feel blogging can help a company with questions?

2) Do you agree with Clays views on blogging and love?

————————————————————————————————————————————————

“Read the Wikipedia entry on Do It Yourself”

Do it yourselfers are people who do jobs in and around the house without having to call a professional to do it for them. DIY was commonly used or founded if you will in the 1950’s. DIY has changed slightly in that it basically has to do with fixing anything from maintaining your car or fixing your computer now a days. This term not only is used for people to save money but there is also a learning aspect behind it. When people fix their own things without having a professional came do it for them they teach themselves how to fix something and then if the problem comes up again they know what the are doing and can DIY’s again. Also this phrase can be a band or solo artist selling their music on a private or self funded record label and can mean many other things. Its crazy how many things people can fix by themselves but choose to pay someone instead because they don’t want to get their hands dirty.

1) How has the phrase “Do it yourself” changed from the 1950’s to today in your opinion?

2) Do you think if everyone had the DIY attitude there would be a lot of people without jobs?

———————————————————————————————————————————————

“Listen to the first two excerpts of James Surowieki’s book:Introduction to The Wisdom of Crowds”

Francis Galton an antropologist or scientist was using livestock as an experiment. His experiment was using farmers and butchers to guess an Ox’s weight. While many of the people were not experts his theory was proved wrong. He thought that the experts would guess the weight better than the non experts. He felt the average weight that everyone guessed would be way off due to the amount of non experts to the amount of experts. He was wrong. The average weight guessed was on pound off the actual weight. This proved that it doesn’t take a few experts in one field to figure something out. It can take multiple ideas to figure something out. In conclusion I feel 10 brains are better than 1.

1) Do you feel that 10 non experts have better odds against 1 expert?

2) Did this story motivate you in anyway? How?

————————————————————————————————————————————–

“Nicholas Carr’s article: The Ignorance of Crowds”

This article described the goods and bads about peer to peer websites. The good things that can come out of these websites are people helping other people out with answering their questions or simply giving them useful information like the well know Wikipedia site does. This can also bring businesses together as well. One bad thing about these sites such as Wikipedia is how do we know all of the information stated is true. The reason why i say this is because anyone can go on and create a Wikipedia article. That is why most times when a student does a research paper the teacher does not allow any sources coming from these types of sites.

1) Do you feel like these sites such as Wikipedia are always telling the truth?

2) Do you think these sites are helpful to businesses?

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

“A History Department Bans Citing Wikipedia as a Reference Source”

This article talkes about what i stated in the previous article summary. It’s about 6 students from middlebury college all wrote the wrong answer on a question on their exams. The professor noticed it and later found out the students were using Wikipedia to cram study for their test. It was later banned. This is what i said earlier that these sites are peer to peer websites and are not written by experts. People like me can go on there and write what ever i want and other people will believe it if they choose to even if it is not correct. There has to be something done about this.

1) Is there any way to fix this problem?

2) Is there any way to filter out the false articles or will they always be there?

Un video que puede causar impacto es the machine is using us. Puede parecer una profecía apocalíptic

Un video que puede causar impacto es the machine is using us.

Y yo me pregunto…

Attention: What you are about to watch could quite possibly rock your world.

GOOD’s new video, “The Hidden Cost of War,” is without a doubt the best educational video I have seen since Professor Wesch’s video on Web 2.0, “The Machine Is Us/ing Us“.

Why you should watch “The Hidden Cost of War”:

In just under 3 minutes, it gives a comprehensive overview of how some experts have concluded that U.S. involvement in the war in Iraq will cost 3 trillion dollars, when both current debts and long-term costs are accounted for.

Screenshots of "The Hidden Cost of War" from itsnicethat.com.

Plus, it has cool pictures.

The figures featured in the video are taken from the 2008 book The Three Trillion Dollar War by American economists Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes. Stiglitz has won a little-known award called the Nobel Prize, and Bilmes teaches at a small university called Harvard. So they know a thing or two about economics. Even if you don’t agree with the political implications of or mathematics behind Stiglitz’s and Bilmes’s estimation, I think everyone can agree that it’s something to think about and discuss.

As you can tell from the capital letters and the middle initials, this is serious business. This ain't no "Goodnight Moon" or "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".

Here’s a YouTube version of the video, but I encourage you to watch it on GOOD’s website for higher quality:

I have set myself a regime. Before I leave home I download a pile of podcasts from iTunes U (University) that look relevant and/or interesting. I then listen to them on the way to work, this sets me up perfectly for the day ahead, especially since I am working on Module Descriptors, Briefs and Lesson Plans. Much more productive than reading the sport in the Metro and listening to Pearl Jam! This morning I downloaded a set of podcasts that I downloaded overnight, from a section called Moving at the Speed of Creativity on iTunes U. The first podcast was on how to use Google and Yahoo Tools within the learning environment. For the most part it was a live seminar the author gave to a group of K-12 teachers a while ago. This became annoying as a lot of it was based around discussions and tutoring sessions in front of a projection, which I couldn’t see (it was a purely audio podcast). So a load of content didnt make any sense.

However, I did manage to glean some very good nuggets of information. Not about Google or Yahoo as such, but some of the asides the presenter mentioned. I noted these down on ‘Notes’ (an application on my iPod Touch). The beauty of the touch is that I can continue to listen to the audio podcsats and make notes about it on the same devise. I noted some information down and then searched for it on my PC at work afterwards.

The presenter (Wesley A. Fryer) had mentioned a bloke called Michael Wesch who is an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University, lecturing in Media Ecology and Cultural Anthropology. He had compiled a video called The Machine is Us/ing Us and uploaded it onto You Tube. It was amazing. Using a really simple format which looked like a series of screen casts, editted together to some cool music it clearly showed the evolution of paper based communication through to Web 2.0 technologies. Slick editing and powerful, simple language made it extremely thought provoking and inspiring. I immediately played it again for my colleagues to see and we agreed it would be brilliant to use it as an introduction to ICT, for our new first years. Instant impact.

There were several other video’s on You Tube by the same author, which I browsed through and another particularly ‘moving’ example of his work was entitled A Vision of Students Today. I’ll let you watch them and you can let me know what you think? Michael Wesch also has a brilliant website based around a working group dealing with this kind of media rich learning environments. It is entitled Digital Ethnography.

Nada mal, ¿no?

After telling us the story of Web 2.0’s evolution in the 5-minute The Machine is Us/Ing Us, Michael Wesch took his specialty in cultural anthropology and applied it to the full breadth of the YouTube community’s evolution for a July 23rd presentation at the Library of Congress.

Starting out with a breakdown of the Numa Numa phenomenon, Wesch then gives a full account of the aftermath of The Machine…’s success, and how excited he was by it: “because when you’re a cultural anthropologist, if your work reaches more than two hundred people, it’s kind of a big deal.”

According to Wesch and his team of researchers, “88% of the content coming through the front door is new and original, which is better than the networks do.” Some of the other facts they’ve discovered include:

Almost 10,000 of the 200,000 videos posted every day on YouTube are addressed to the YouTube community

Over 50% of videos have an 18-24 year old in them

Approximately 15% of videos on YouTube are remixes or remakes of other videos

Time it would take to view all of the material on YouTube (as of March 17th 2008): 412.3 years

The full presentation tackles subjects including YouTube haters, Free Hugs, lonelygirl15, and the nature of authenticity online. At 55 minutes, it’s a commitment, but engrossing, and he provides a table of contents and time stamps if you want to skip around. Consider it like a TED talk, but with more dancing.

Suite à l’observation de la vidéo nommée “The machine is us/ing us”

The machine is using us” as well !

The Machine is Us/ing Us by Dr. Michael Wesch
