So this week I’m fucked. To be less fucked I’ve been coding in verilog for at least 14 h

So this week I’m fucked. To be less fucked I’ve been coding in verilog for at least 14 hours in the past two days trying to get this lab out of the way. It simulates. There’s a reasonable chance (>2%) that it’ll synthesize. Whoo

At one point tonight I left the lab to get dinner and then code at home. I walked past the Randy Pausche Bridge which is now open and it was lit up (it’s an ugly ass bridge) with blue lights. I was listening to the corny “Anyone Else But You” by the Moldy Peaches while I walked to the University Center to get food. It was freezing, but that point I felt an overwhelming sense of contentment. Hard work (coding, which I guess I enjoy), the cold, lights, sentimental music, being alone. It was pretty awesome and deeply satisfying.

On a closely related note, this lab project has only been terrible because I’m a deeply bad engineer. I mean there’s the part where all of my solutions are backwards. But there’s also the issue that I can’t draw anything on paper. Day 1 of the lab we were supposed to draw out our FSM and datapath, except it was such a complex problem I just couldn’t fathom doing them individually. It seemed to me that you would literally just have to draw something, see why it doesn’t work, and then fix it. Furthermore it seemed like (and still feels like) you have to do the two things concurrently. I just can’t imagine how people successfully drew datapaths and FSMs. Instead I just started coding Monday afternoon and finished in 3 hours. Then I debugged for at least 11. I basically refused to put things on paper and just tried to boggle it in my mind. Furthermore I didn’t modularize anything. Most people have modules that do certain tasks (sort of like a method in Java) and the modules are interconnected. Instead I just have a couple modules and a giant box of floating shit that connects with each other. It’s incomprehensible unless you painstakingly track variables through the code. That’s basically what made debugging hell. Anyways I wonder if my inability to do this is bad… I think so… yeah. Shit

That’s pretty much why I suck at all things logical though. I have a difficult time thinking of things simplistically. Everything runs concurrently and things seem to be dependent on each other that aren’t. And it’s made more difficult by the fact that I don’t have the super memory of geniuses who can remind themselves of why certain things are true just by pulling the reason/proof out of their head. So then I have these ideas just floating around, completely disconnected and without any basis and I’m trying to like put the pieces together so I can think of some conclusion that depends on them. It’s basically impossible. Instead it’s all about parsing the data, finding exactly what you need, and then making your conclusion. Not very good at that.

Okay so this was an awesome comment. It’s less awesome how I linked it. If you click the top comment there’s basically 50 comments in between that and the joke. That distance is the key.

So, The Idolator have decided that The Moldy Peaches‘ ‘Who’s Got the Crack?‘

So, The Idolator have decided that The Moldy Peaches‘ ‘Who’s Got the Crack?‘ is the 48th worst song of the decade. Sandwiched between LL Cool J’s collaboration with J Lo at 49 and Akon’s ‘Sorry Blame it on Me’ what this basicall prooves is that anyone can make a list, and they’re a pretty good way to generate interaction. I mean, I took this from Kicking_k’s Twitter feed, posted it here and then Tweeted it myself…so everyone’s a winner, right?

In their defence the Moldy Peaches recorded some of the most brilliantly bratty, shit-nosed songs of the early 00s. People will argue that Jeffrey Lewis is probably the true ‘genius’ of anti-folk, and rightly so, but Adam Green and Kimya Dawson combined the pure with the puerile to create the dumb-as-fuck brilliance of the self-titled debut album (the self-releases don’t count, or at least right here they don’t).

The problem with the Moldy Peaches isn’t that they were shit, it’s that they were hijacked…by the hipsters, by the movie industry…anyone you want to wave the finger at just stick ‘em *here*. Bands like the Moldy Peaches are meant to be low-key, hell – they were supposed to be fun! To take ‘Who’s Got the Crack?’ and write about what a bad record it is, is to fall for it. It’s barely situationism but there ands like the Moldy Peaches did, and still do, challenge the notions of good music, there is no good or bad…it’s just relative. Well, except for Muse…they’re just hideous.

If you’re still not convinced then check out ‘Nothing Came Out‘, covered in tape hiss and featuring possibly the most endearing lack of self confidence you will hear…for the next hour or so at least and, if that still doesn’t tickle your fancy then maybe this will.

Just don’t play that out loud at work…

Today is a special edition of Secondhand Sunday that is close to our hearts. The Moldy Peaches ‘Lucky Number Nine.’ I remember the first time I saw the band performing on a local NY show called The Daily Beat. From what I recall, they performed this song and ‘Hulkamaniac’ while wearing rabbit hats and/or footed pajamas and/or capes. Learning the band actually was from the town over and that Kimya Dawson worked at my favorite record store and my mom worked for Adam Green’s dad, my friends and I were blown away. They are hometown heroes if you will. Both have went on to very successful solo careers and a lot of attention from Juno, but sometimes we wish ‘Lucky Number Nine’ would waltz it’s way back onto the stage. Footed pajamas and all.

Watch The Moldy Peaches’ ‘Lucky Number Nine’…..(hooray!)

Fresh from his transition to Warner Brothers/Reprise Records, freak folk leader Devendra Banhart is set to release his major label debut. I don’t quite recall hearing that he made the jump from his former indie label but kudos to him for branching out. Banhart will release ‘What Will Be’ later this fall but there is no official release date yet. This will be his sixth record and the rumor is that there is an hours worth of material on it. Nice. Below is the tracklisting, and though no new music has really leaked yet, we’re leaving you with an old Banhart video below.

It has been quite sometime since we’ve heard from songstress Regina Spektor. About to release her new album titled ‘Far’ out June 23rd on Sire Records, Spektor has already reached the number 20 spot on itunes within the first day of preorder. I remember the first time I saw or even heard her play. She opened for The Strokes on their tour for ‘Room on Fire’ at the theater at Madison Square Garden. Then she was just a girl with a keyboard, a snare drum and a voice. Most memorably, she performed a song called ‘Reading Time with Pickle’. It is completely amazing how much she has grown since then. ‘Far’ like all Regina Spektor albums, is worth picking up.

You can catch Regina Spektor on tour starting in NYC on June 17th. From there she is off to Europe.

According to NME, REM is going to be honored by 20 bands / “acts” at Carnegie Hall on Ma

According to NME, REM is going to be honored by 20 bands / “acts” at Carnegie Hall on March 11. Now, while I like REM, and while I think they’re one of the most influential rock bands within the past 25 years, I wouldn’t have posted this if it wasn’t for a few of the bands that are going to be paying homage. Glen Hansard (of The Frames, The Swell Season, and star of “Once”), Guster, Kimya Dawson (of The Moldy Peaches fame via “Juno”), Patti Smith, and Bob Mould are some of the bands that will be paying homage. And if that wasn’t enough, Calexico will be the house band. Holy fuck–that is an amazing line-up.

It should also be mentioned that all the proceeds will go to three non-profit organizations; “The American Symphony Orchestra, Church Street School of Music and Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation”

More bands are expected to be announced this week and next week as the event nears, who else do you think (or want) will end up honoring the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Famers? I’d like to see AC Newman (if he’s with more of The New Pornographers, it’ll be even better) show up.

Edward told me to start watching Scrubs, and since I always do what Edward tells me to do (“Grow a mustache!” “Jump off of a cliff” “Change the picture!” “Start writing for animalshow.wordpress.com [tell your friends]“) I sat down one day, pushed aside a wonderful paper about the stages of development in the Navajo culture, and watched quite a few of the most recent Scrubs episodes. I used to be a huge fan “back in the day” (inside Dr. Cox joke) but I fell off the bandwagon when the guest stars they started bringing in became less interesting and more recognizable (also it wasn’t funny anymore, but apparently you can rectify that by firing all the old writers and hiring a bunch of Jewish people [sorry]). Anyway, it seems that they’ve reverted back to their old ways, as one of their most recent guest stars happened to be a wacky young Californian by the name of Kate Micucci, who is (and, bear with me here, I know it’s crazy) a good singer/songwriter/actress. Holy crap…

Kate Micucci was born in New Jersey (which means she’s related to both Bruce Springsteen AND Bon Jovi) and has been a semi-transient/art student (is there a difference) ever since. I’m not sure when she started writing songs or how she got a hold of a ukulele, but it was a very solid choice for her. Her songs are absolutely beautiful in that overly simplified, childish way that Kimya Daweson tries way too hard obtain in her solo work. Kate’s slightly nasal voice, combined with her superb ukulele skills, brings the level of “awwwwwww” in her songs to a spectacularly high level, but what really stands out on her small 5 song EP is the potential she has to be a legitimate song writer after her “cutesy Kimya” phase passes. Of course Kimya’s ‘cute phase’ isn’t a phase, per say, but an undiagnosed developmental disorder that forces her to continually write songs that only appeal to girls between the ages of 13 and 17. So, unlike Kimya, Micucci shows promising maturity on songs like ‘Just Say When’, which showcase not only a more “adult” voice, but a more “adult” subject matter as well.

Additionally, Kate is part of a small and significantly less serious side project entitled Garfunkel and Oats. This was well before Kate’s debut on Scrubs, and a bit before some of her more mature songs on her debut, but it still retains that adorable feeling that is similar to the one you got when you first saw Love Actually (Hugh Grant, eat my heart out). I honestly think that if the Moldy Peaches had not been so stuck on the “anti-folk” movement they could have sounded like this. Songs like “Fuck You” retain the both the humor and the childlike innocence that The Peaches were aiming for. You can find Garfunkel and Oats’ EP for free on Kate’s website, however, I would recommend that you search elsewhere because her copies are of terrible quality.

But why listen to me talk when you too could fall in love with Kate Micucci (for the mere price of clicking on one or more of these buttons):
