I often wonder how people survived in the past without a cell phone. It is such a necessity in daily life. With a cell phone, you are so easily accessible to the world and I think it has made us unbelievably impatient.

I was watching an old Seinfeld episode called The Movie. Jerry’s plans get all mixed up because he couldn’t make his spot at the comedy club, so he has to go to the movie theater to let the gang know that he can’t make the movie. Before Jerry gets there, the movie gets sold out so they have to go to another movie theater, so George, Elaine, and Kramer separate and a chain of events assues. Here is the first part of the episode. The link to the other 2 parts are on the side.

Another example. Sex and the City. Carrie turns 35. She shows up at the restaurant. No one is there. Hours later, she gives up and goes home. When she gets home, there are messages on her machine. So and so is late. There’s another restaurant with a similar name. Traffic is insane.

NEVER would have happened without a cell phone.

Of course, these are fiction. But it happens all the time, or at least, it used to. Now, if someone’s late, you pick up your cell phone, call them, and see where they are. Because of cell phones, no one would bother to wait hours to see if someone will show up or not. You will know within minutes if you will be stood up. It’s brutal.

I lost my cell phone less than 24 hours ago. It hasn’t been insufferable. I’m getting a replacement phone this Friday. I don’t necessarily feel unconnected. With the internet at my fingertips, it’s hard to feel unconnected. I can access my phone numbers online, so I can call people on my home phone if I need to.

I think tomorrow will be a different story. I will spend the majority of my time at my aunt’s house and not having a cell phone will be a bit difficult. It will just have to happen.

I was able to have breakfast with my friend Jia before she left for California! Even without a cell phone, I was able to get ahold of her. It was amazing to catch up with her. I hadn’t seen her in over a year, so it was nice to catch up. She’s definitely one of those friends who don’t have to know every single detail about each other’s lives, but when we get together, we talk about it, and it’s like we never spent 1.5 years apart.

Jim Carrey in Once Bitten (1985)

 

Once Bitten is a 1985 American comedy film starring Lauren Hutton and Jim Carrey. It is a vampire-themed comedy about Mark Kendall (Carrey), an innocent and naive high school student who is seduced in a Los Angeles club by a sultry blonde countess (Hutton) who, unknown to him, is really a centuries old vampire. The film was Carrey’s seventh film and his first main role.

The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 silent film adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel of the same title directed by Rupert Julian. The film featured Lon Chaney in the title role as the masked and facially deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney’s intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film’s premiere.

The film also features Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Gibson Gowland, John St. Polis and Snitz Edwards. The only surviving cast member is Carla Laemmle (born 1909), niece of producer Carl Laemmle, who played a small role as “prima ballerina” in the film when she was about 15.

The movie was adapted by Elliott J. Clawson, Frank M. McCormack (uncredited), Tom Reed (titles) and Raymond L. Schrock. It was directed by Rupert Julian.

Trivia:

• Edward Sedgwick directed a few scenes after director Rupert Julian walked off the set after heated arguments with cast and crew.
• Ben Carré was called in to design the sets, and although he had worked at the Paris Opera House, he had already been living in California for some time doing sets.
• Lon Chaney devised his own make-up.
• The only part of the set sill standing is the Opera House, though the only parts left completely untouched are the boxes and stage sides.
• Several sequences were shot in various color processes for the top general release prints. Technicolor was used for scenes from FAUST and the Bal Masque scene, Prizmacolor sequences were shot for the “Soldier’s Night” introduction, and Handschiegel (a process that uses stamps to hand-color prints) for the Phantom’s notes and red cape on the rooftop. Only the Technicolor Bal Masque sequence is known to survive (an IB print from the 1929 re-release).
• Filmed in Stage 28 at Universal Studios, Hollywood.
• Lon Chaney put egg membrane on his eyeballs to give them a cloudy look.
• A Jewel Production. Unlike most of its peers, Universal never owned a theater chain (ultimately, a wise decision given the 1949 Supreme Court anti-trust decision that would threaten the livelihood of many of its competitors). As a result, in 1916, Carl Laemmle devised a 3-tiered branding system to market its features to independent theater owners: Red Feather (low-budget programmers), Bluebird (mainstream releases) and Jewel (costly prestige productions). The studio would abandon branding altogether by the end of 1929.
• For the 1929 sound version, Universal purchased a pipe organ from the Robert Morton Organ Company in Van Nuys, CA. It was installed on Stage 10, which was first used for filming and quickly converted for scoring music as well as doing Foley sound effects work. The organ was used for scenes where Erik plays the organ in his basement lair. It was used in several Universal feature film scores including Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Ghost Story (1981), as well as episodes of various TV series produced by the studio. It was sold sometime in the late 1990s.
• The Phantom’s makeup was designed to resemble a skull. Lon Chaney attached a strip of fish skin (a thin, translucent material) to his nostrils with spirit gum, pulled it back until he got the tilt he wanted, then attached the other end of the fish skin under his bald cap. For some shots, a wire-and-rubber device was used, and according to cameraman Charles Van Enger it cut into Chaney’s nose and caused a good deal of bleeding. Cheeks were built up using a combination of cotton and collodion. Ears were glued back and the rest was greasepaint shaded in the proper areas of the face. The sight was said to have caused some patrons at the premiere to faint.
• The print restored by Kino is a 1929 re-release version that was re-edited, eliminating some scenes and inserting new material shot after the 1925 version was finished. These included a sound sequence with opera star Mary Fabian singing in the role of Carlotta. In the re-edited version, Virginia Pearson, who played Carlotta in the silent 1925 version, is credited and referred to as “Carlotta’s Mother” instead.
• The film was re-released in sound in 1929 using Vitaphone/Western Electric sound disks. Approximately 40% of the film was re-shot in synchronous sound and the rest had a music/soundtrack added or was dubbed over. The Kino edition is a silent version of the 1929 cut (as are, with few exceptions, most others), which was a common practice at the time for theaters that did not have sound systems installed. For the sound edition Lon Chaney was not available, and contractually Universal was not allowed to have vocal synchronization of the Phantom. However, the studio had third-person lines written and dubbed over shots of the Phantom’s shadow. The actor who spoke these lines is uncredited, but it is probably Universal regular Phillips Smalley.
• On October 31, 2008, this film was screened at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with live musical accompaniment by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Ads contained a tag line that was a clever twist on that for Alien (1979): “In silent films, no one can hear you scream”.
• Rupert Julian fought constantly with the cast and crew. Julian and Lon Chaney were not on speaking terms for most of the production, and had to communicate through intermediaries. Norman Kerry actually charged at Julian while riding a horse, knocking Julian to the ground in front of a group of onlookers.
• Gregory Peck’s earliest movie memory is of being so scared by The Phantom of the Opera (1925) at age 9 that his grandmother allowed him to sleep in the bed with her that night.
• During the climactic chase through the streets of Paris, the Cathedral from _The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923/I)_ (q.v.) can be clearly seen.
• Inside sound stage 28, part of the opera house set continues to stand to the side where it was filmed some eight decades ago making it the oldest standing interior film set in the world. Though it remains impressive, time has taken its toll and it is very rarely used. Urban legends claim the set remains because when workers have attempted to take it down in the past there have been fatal accidents, said to be caused by the ghost of Lon Chaney Sr.

It ain’t what it used to be folks. In the spirit of Halloween if you want the crap scared out of you (and who doesn’t love that?) please click on the link to the right called “Shellter- The Movie.” It’s a horror flick filled with blood and gore that I am too wimpy to watch. Why and I telling you to click on the link and watch it then? Because you are not a wuss like me and because a beautiful, talented, and surprisingly sweet mentor of mine, Michelle Merker produced it. By the way (BTW for the kids), it’s not surprising that she is sweet. It’s just surprising if you know her and put it together with this flick. Its already won awards at film fests so check it out!!

My Name Is Bruce is a 2007 American comedy film, directed, co-produced by and starring B movie cult actor Bruce Campbell. The film was written by Mark Verheiden. It had a theatrical release in October 2008, followed by DVD and Blu-ray releases on February 10, 2009.

Although Sam Raimi, with whom Bruce frequently collaborates, is not involved with this production, much of the film is in the vein of the Evil Dead series; however, Ted Raimi (Sam’s brother), also a frequent collaborator, appears in this film.

Campbell has shown several minutes of the movie during some of his campus lectures, as well as a few public screenings including showings at the sixth annual Ashland Independent Film Festival, CineVegas and the eleventh annual East Lansing Film Festival. A trailer was released for the film as well and is available on various websites. A screening was held at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. Tickets for the show sold out in less than two minutes, breaking the previous Alamo ticket sellout record, which was also set by a Bruce Campbell appearance at the theater in 1998.

Trivia:

• According to the DVD commentary, most of the Bruce Campbell memorabilia in Jeff’s room was real, including a spare Brisco County Jr. costume that Campbell owned. A few fake items, such as a poster for “The Stoogitive,” were made to fill up space.
• There are many mentions and references to Bruce Campbell’s other films. Examples are phrases ’sugar baby’, ‘groovy’ and ‘boomstick’ along with name checking of people like Sam Raimi (director of the ‘Evil Dead’ trilogy).
• One of the townspeople named Frank makes a reference to kidnapping the blacksmith from Army of Darkness. Timothy Patrick Quill, the actor who plays Frank, also played the blacksmith in Army of Darkness (1992).
• The movie references Bruce Campbell’s fake-memoir novel ‘Make Love (The Bruce Campbell Way)’ published in 2005 several times. On the set of Cavealien 2, the actor Bruce sits down next to after the shoot is reading “The Complete Dummie’s Guide to Acting”, mentioned and pictured in ‘Make love’ on several occasions. In Jeff’s room, there is a poster for the fictitious Bruce Campbell movie ‘Death of the Dead’. This movie plays a prominent role in the plot of ‘Make love’. The poster as shown in the movie was originally featured as an image in the book.
• The exteriors for the town of “Goldlick” were actually shot on Bruce Campbell’s property where a back lot was built with the exteriors of all of the buildings. The interior shots were all done on a sound stage.
• Ellen Sandweiss, Dan Hicks and Timothy Patrick Quill all worked with Bruce Campbell in the Evil Dead Trilogy: Sandweiss played Cheryl in The Evil Dead (1981), Hicks played Jake in Evil Dead II (1987) and Quill played the Blacksmith in Army of Darkness (1992).
• During the town meeting, where the Dirt Farmer and Frank are revealed to be lovers, Frank says “I wish I could quit you”, which is a reference to the line “I wish I knew how to quit you” from Brokeback Mountain (2005).
• The (fake) brand of liquor that Bruce gives his dog is Shemp’s. In some Raimi/Campbell projects, body-doubles and stand-ins are called Fake Shemps, after Shemp Howard of the Three Stooges.

House of Dark Shadows is a 1970 feature-length horror film by Dan Curtis based on his Dark Shadows television series. Filming took place at Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, New York with additional footage at nearby Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) searches for a cure so he can marry the lovely woman who resembles his long-lost fiancée Josette (Kathryn Leigh Scott).

Trivia:

• House of Dark Shadows has been released on VHS, and a two-sided laserdisc (the laserdisc packaged with Night of Dark Shadows) which are out of print, and on Playstation 3 Movie Network Digital DVD quality for $14.99 as of Oct 08. It is currently also available to rent from Amazon Unbox.
• Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis’s original idea had been to edit together footage from the original TV series into a feature-length film. This idea was quickly abandoned, due to the complexity of the storyline and ABC-TV’s refusal to cooperate.
• A paperback novelization of the film by Marilyn Ross (who had written a series of novels based on the TV show) was published in October 1970. The novel is based on the original script, and contains some scenes which were either cut from the movie, or were never filmed.

• The film was originally to be titled simply Dark Shadows, but MGM wanted to differentiate it from the TV show.

• This is still the only soap opera that has made a transition from TV to the movies.

• The TV series was still in production while the film was being made. Some characters had to be temporarily written out of the show so that the actors would be available to appear in the movie. Barnabas, for example, was trapped in his coffin on the TV show by a failed writer who wanted to use the vampire’s life story as the basis for a novel.

Motion Picture Soundtrack

• When Dark Shadows was revived in the early 1990s, the script for the movie was used as a jumping-off point because it so neatly summarized some of the original show’s complex storyline.

• The movie’s action scenes were coordinated by Alex Stevens, who also looked after the stuntwork on the TV series and usually played the werewolf on the show whenever one was called for.

• The preview version of the film included a scene where young David Collins pretends to hang himself. It was removed because there were concerns some children might “try this at home”. No copies of this footage are known to exist. Another scene that was shown in some theaters has Jeff testing out the bow and arrow before pursuing Barnabas.

• Some interior scenes were shot at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion in Norwalk, Connecticut

• The second movie was originally supposed to bring back Barnabas. The movie was to go under the name of “Curse of Dark Shadows” (according to Famous Monsters of Filmland). But by then the show had gone off the air and Jonathan Frid had moved on to other things. So “Night of Dark Shadows” was made, focusing on Collinwood after a new heir Quentin Collins (played by David Selby) takes over after the destruction of the Collins clan by Barnabas. Elizabeth Stoddard gets a brief mention in the film as having recently died, the only connection to the first movie.

• As of this writing, Johnny Depp, a long-time Dark Shadows fan, has gotten the green light to do a new Dark Shadows movie, where he will star as Barnabas Collins.

Anak gadis satu-satunya anak pak Lurah mahasiswi tingkat akhir IPB Bogor yang harus pulang untuk dijodohkan dengan Raden mas Pono. Sejak kecil sudah ditinggal meninggal ibunya menjadikan Rini mandiri dan kuat. Rini sedikit lebih menonjol di antara warga desa karena pendidikannya…

Film yang cukup kocak dan membuat setiap orang selalu tersenyum ini mengisahkan tentang seorang preman bernama SAHRONI (Tora Sudiro), preman desa Demolong di kaki gunung Sumbing merubah total kehidupannya karena jauh cinta dengan RINI (Fanny Fabriana), anak pak Lurah yang pulang ke desa untuk dikawinkan dengan RADEN  MAS PONO (Vincent Rompies).  Karena persaingan cinta segitiga akhirnya PAK LURAH (Marwoto) memutuskan untuk memberikan prasyarat siapa pun yang bisa menjadi Kepala Desa baru menggantikan dirinya akan diangkat menjadi mantu. Sahroni dan Raden mas Pono pun bersaing gila-gila’an untuk menjadi suami Rini.

Tanpa sepengetahuan yang lain ternyata Rini sudah menentukan pilihan hatinya ke Sahroni yang dianggapnya meskipun preman dan hampir semua orang desa membencinya tapi punya hati mulia. Sahroni yang mulai berubah total dan giat mempersiapkan diri kampaye mendapat saingan Raden mas Pono yang minta bantuan HERI (Den Baguse Ngarso) dukun sakti dari Dieng. Hari pemilihan pun tiba dan semua orang menunggu dengan tegang hasil perhitungan suara, Raden mas Pono unggul satu suara dari Sahroni karena curang menyuap panitia pemilihan… Sahroni terpaksa menerima kekalahannya dengan hati terluka. Dan Rini, harus mau tidak mau menikah dengan Raden mas Pono. Di malam midodareni Rini kabur lewat jendela. Warga undangan-pun heboh termasuk pak Lurah dan Raden mas Pono. Rame-rame mereka menghakimi dan menyeret Sahroni.

Ternyata Rini, punya rencana sendiri. Rini menjebak IIR (kaki tangan Raden mas Pono) untuk mengaku bahwa Raden mas Pono berlaku curang. Iir pun menyerah dengan gaya interogasi Rini dan akhirnya mengaku bahkan mau menjadi saksi. Perhitungan ulang-pun dilakukan dengan persetujuan semua warga dan disaksikan pejabat daerah. Terbukti dengan hanya unggul satu suara Sahroni berhasil menang. Dan jalan dia untuk menikahi Rini mulus tanpa hambatan. Belum selesai kegembiraan Sahroni dan Rini, HERI dukun kepercayaan Raden mas Pono muncul mengacaukan suasana dengan segala strateginya untuk melegalkan Raden mas Pono….
