I complain about The New York Times a lot. I feel  justified, since they appear to no longer employ a copy editor, and their columnists just blabber about the personal lives of Tiger Woods (Rich) or Sarah Palin (Dowd), or have views of international affairs that have no connection with reality (Kristof and Friedman). Don’t even get me started on their world news!

That being said, they dropped a long article yesterday about how Goldman Sachs and others bet against their own customers with credit-swaps. I’m no finance wiz, but the article seems to explain complex issues pretty well. It’s chocked full of anonymous quotes and refusals to comment, which are either a sign of shitty journalism or really good journalism. The multiamedia graphic is cool, too. Definitely worth a read.

In other news, the New York Post has blessed us with the top animal images of 2009, as well as a bevy of lists on the nutty decade that was. Remember what the #1 song was on January 1, 2000? I sadly do:

The Obama administration should have sent federal stimulus money not to the U.S. states, but to cities, where ”most of the environmental damage is done and most of the chances for improvement are,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday.

Bloomberg joined about 80 other local leaders from around the world at a ‘’summit” that took place alongside the U.N. climate conference.

The mayors and other officials were from rich capitals like London and Tokyo and impoverished cities as Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Dhaka, Bangladesh. They were taking part in the five-day session to compare notes on how cities can help reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouses gases, and save money on energy and other costs.

City leaders say they want to show the way, but can’t do it alone.

”While nations talk, cities act. Cities are delivering real cuts in greenhouse gases,” Toronto Mayor Steve Miller said. ”We have already cut 1 million tons of CO2 per year. To do more, we need our national governments to act.”

Midway through the 193-nation U.N. conference Tuesday, deep divides between rich and poor nations brought talks to a crawl. Negotiators sought agreement on new reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions by industrialized countries, and controls on emissions growth in the developing world.

President Barack Obama and more than 100 other national leaders are scheduled to participate in the conference’s final days this week. Miller, Bloomberg, Copenhagen’s Ritt Bjerregaard and dozens of the other mayors Tuesday signed a joint declaration urging the leaders ”to embrace this chance and seal an ambitious and empowering deal in Copenhagen.”

New York — a city of islands, subways and other underground infrastructure — will be threatened by seas rising from global warming. To guard against ever-stronger sea surges from future hurricanes, some scientists and engineers have suggested the city build giant barriers in New York Harbor.

Bloomberg, meanwhile, is moving ahead with immediate plans to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent from 2006 levels by 2030.

The New York City Council last week approved legislation requiring owners of larger buildings to do energy audits and replace insulation and take other steps toward energy efficiency, including upgrading their lighting. The city has also planted 300,000 of 1 million new trees, has extended bike lanes over 200 miles of streets, and has encouraged conversion to hybrid vehicles of 22 percent of the taxi fleet, among other emissions-saving steps.

”It is a big deal,” Bloomberg said at a panel session after the summit opening. He boasted that the city was making progress without financial support from New York State.

In fact, the mayor said, some of the $787 billion federal stimulus package, to create jobs in the midst of U.S. recession, became a ”great waste of money” when it was funneled to the states for projects.

”If the federal government really wants to do something, you give the money directly to the cities. The dumbest way to distribute the money is to send it to the states, because they have to spread it around the states for political reasons,” often to be spent on useless projects, he said.

”I’ve said this to the president and to every member of Congress I can buttonhole,” Bloomberg added. ”You really have to send the money where the problem is.”

Cities and towns consume two-thirds of the world’s total primary energy and produce more than 70 percent of its energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, the International Energy Agency reports. That will grow to 76 percent by 2030, the agency says. Most comes from electrifying and heating private, commercial and municipal buildings.

Other big cities are also trying to lead on climate. Sao Paulo, Brazil, for example, a sprawl of 11 million people, has by law set as a goal a 30 percent reduction in emissions by 2013. It has already achieved 20 percent since 2005, chiefly through its new system of generating biogas for energy at landfills, instead of allowing waste methane, a greenhouse gas, to rise into the skies.

Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million, also has set ambitious goals. It’s cut CO2 emissions by 20 percent from 1995 to 2005. Mayor Bjerregaard plans to reduce it by another 20 percent by 2015, and then to become ”carbon-neutral” by 2025.

After round-table talks Tuesday, Bjerregaard said the plans and accomplishments laid out by other mayors ”will inspire all of us to act.”

Julie Postle, previously known to gossip hounds as “Unidentified Orlando Cocktail Waitress,” was identified as one of Tiger Woods’ mistresses this afternoon.

Julie Postle’s Ex Says Tiger Stole Her Away…

Brian Kimbrough has been revealed as the 28-year-old male who has spoken to the New York Post, telling them that Julie Postle and Tiger Woods carried on an affair that began approximately six years ago. Postle was 20 years old at the time, and she waited tables at the Roxy Night Club in Orlando.

At the same time, Julie Postle was dating Brian Kimbrough, a bartender at the Roxy. Kimbrough has reported that Tiger Woods first pursued Julie Postle in 2004 and that Postle told Kimbrough that she wouldn’t become involved with Tiger. When she did indeed start messing around with Tiger, Kimbrough wanted her to break it off. Back then, Postle obliged: Kimbrough says, “she promised [the affair] would stop.”

But it didn’t. For at least a few years, Julie Postle kept Tiger Woods’ phone number in her phone as “Mr. Brightside” (based on The Killers song about a jealous boyfriend). Kimbrough says Postle refused to cut the Tiger ties: “She said she wasn’t going, but now that I look back, I’m sure she was . . . And when she called me for the phone records, she admitted it.” Kimbrough is referring to the alleged fact that Julie Postle called him recently as she and her lawyer scrambled to diffuse rumors about her link to Tiger Woods.

The New York Post has quoted Kimbrough as saying that his ex-girlfriend wasn’t impressed with Tiger Woods or his rich lifestyle. Kimbrough reports that Postle told him, “I’m not too impressed with [Tiger's] house.”

Kimbrough added that Tiger was a jealous predator. “She was in [Tiger's] closet at 5 a.m. calling me, and he was in the background telling her to get off the phone,” Kimbrough said. “He knew she had a boyfriend and was like, ‘Don’t call him.’ “

Kimbrough and Julie Postle broke up in 2005, and at that point Postle told Kimbrough that Tiger Woods had “invited her to Vegas, offered her money and said, ‘If you want to break up with your boyfriend, I can give you some money to get you on your feet.

For some people, 15 minutes of fame can extend into a possibly lengthy career. Ashley Dupre, former call girl whose relationship with Elliot Spitzer was a major public controversy, is writing a weekly advice column for The New York Post. Advice will pertain to sex and relationships and deal with questions from readers who write-in. This new position thoroughly disappoints me because I think it is a positive example for bimbos everywhere. Sleep with a big name guy and you can achieve the job of your dreams. She is not a relationship expert or a formally trained psychologist. Instead she is a girl that has slept with men as a profession, which we are supposed to think makes her the love guru.

On “The View” today, Dupre sat with the ladies and talked about how wrong it is that all of these women are coming forward about their affairs with Tiger Woods. She thinks it is hurting his family and “messing with someone else’s life.” In her case, she was discovered and did not bring the attention on herself, she said. These statements are completely hypocritical. While she may not have sought after the attention, she did prosper in it once it came to her. She conducted interviews with Diane Sawyer and other media outlets. To say that she did not further the tabloid babble like the Tiger Woods mistresses are currently doing is completely wrong. The reality is, she got caught with a married man, regardless of the circumstances, and then jumped at the opportunity to get publicity for herself.

For the Post to give her this position is extremely offensive to journalists. She did not work hard through college to get a degree and then do lower level jobs until she could work her way to the top. Instead she stumbled upon the opportunity to be a writer because she is a well-known name. Although the Post is not the most reputable newspaper, this does show their intentions, to sell papers. Women will be jumping at the opportunity to hear why their man is cheating on them. Just because Dupre was a call girl does not mean she is an expert on men’s intentions and reasoning. I think the entire deal is a publicity stunt that shows the motivation of girls to have affairs with public figures. They will claim they did not get anything out of the deal or that they were so in love with the man, but self-gain is their real motivation.

It kills me that our world is now a place where your look or actions can take you to the top. I wish the world was centered on merit and honesty, but the truth is far from these ideals. As a student that will soon be looking for a job, it is discouraging to hear that someone like this would be hired before me. Immediately upon her hire, there are stories in all the major news outlets and on television. This is what the Post wants, instead of a lesser known name with good ideas and an interesting perspective. I look forward to paving my own way in the future, based on my actions and determination, instead of using superficial means. In the end, I think hard-working people are better off because their achievements mean more than someone who sleeps his/her way to the top.

My ongoing struggle to ban the spraying of poisonous pesticides in Central Park was recently chronicled in the New York Post.

Among the toxic pesticides used in Central Park:

Glyphosate (Roundup), Imidacloprid, Trifloxystrobin, Pyraclostrbin, Clopyralid, Halosulfuron-Metlyl, Azoxystrobin, Bacillus Lichenitormis.

Pesticides cause birth defects (perhaps they caused mine), promote miscarriages, are a known carcinogen and neurotoxin. Yet the crown jewel of New York City has decided to lace the park with these poisons. Neil Calvanese, the VP of Park Operations, has confirmed to me that a new round of pesticide spraying is slated for the spring of 2010.    NCalvanese@CentralParkNYC.org

I have alerted the Community Board 8 which has shown no interest in the issue. Same for City Councilman Daniel Garodnick and to date, Borough President Scott Stringer. I will continue to pressure the Central Park Conservancy to stop the spraying. Until I do:

It was recently reported that rapper Busta Rhymes has been ordered to pay over $75,000 to a man from Albany who accused him of an assault from 2003. The New York Post reports that a man by the name of Alex Duncan is the one who accusing Busta of this assault. He claims to have suffered both physical and psychological injuries  stemming from the events that took place on September 13, 2003 at a concert in SUNY Albany.

“A Brooklyn hearing officer yesterday ordered rap star Busta Rhymes  to fork over $75,000 to an Albany man who was doused with water, pummeled with bottles and sucker-punched by the hip-hop star and a bodyguard. The injured man, Alex Duncan, testified that he suffered nightmares and psychological after-effects of the Sept. 13, 2003, attack during a break in a rap concert at SUNY Albany.”

According to HipHopDX.com:

“Duncan alleged that the Brooklyn rapper poured water on him and punched him in the face during a break at a concert in SUNY Albany.“I wanted something to come out of it,” said Duncan, regarding the case’s outcome. “I don’t even go to parties anymore, because there’s always someone asking, ‘What happened to that Busta Rhymes case?’ Busta’s lawyer, Robert Kalina, was not present at the trial or yesterday’s hearing, and has not offered comment on the case.”

Some reports say that Duncan’s lawyers initially requested a half a million dollars for his suffering. He claims that the altercation has left his social life tarnished. According to The Boom Box:

“The former school groundskeeper said that the incident has hindered his ability to have a normal social life because of the constant inquiries from friends and associates. “It’s all right,” Duncan, said about the $75K he is set to receive. “I wanted something to come out of it. I don’t even go to parties anymore, because there’s always someone asking, ‘What happened to that Busta Rhymes case?’”

Damn Busta, What it is right now? You causing dudes to have nightmares? I mean  assault is wrong on any level but do you really need half a mil or even $75,000 because you are having nightmares? Well you be the judge. So far no one in Busta’s camp has commented on this issue. We will keep you updated.

Drake Explains Alleged Tupac Diss

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Drake and his song “Fear.” Drake mentions Tupac on the track and many people took it as him dissing Pac. Drake however denies these claims. The lyrics that raised speculation about this perceived diss include:

“I never cried when ‘Pac died/But I probably will when Hov does/And if my tears hold value, then I would drop one for every single thing he showed us/ And I’ll be standing in a puddle”

Drake intends that he only was showing how he is very new to Hip-Hop. According to MTV News:

“Drake explained the lines to MTV News, saying, “A lot of people also sort of don’t understand the meaning of that line,. It’s not necessarily that I don’t love West Coast Hip Hop or that I don’t love ‘Pac now that I’m 22, but that line was just said to show how new I am to Hip Hop. And like I said, I was 9 when that happened, so it didn’t really affect me. But that song in general was just one of those things that took awhile to finish because it was an opportunity to say a lot of the things on my mind. That always feels good as a rapper, when you can get your thoughts out.”

Honestly I can see where Drake is coming from. I’ve loved Hip-Hop since I was a little girl but never really appreciated it until I was old enough to truly understand it. So when Pac and Biggie died, it didn’t really effect me because I was too young to understand the significance of what had just happened. So in that aspect I can definitely relate. Hopefully this is truly what Drake meant by his statement and this is not just a lame excuse for a cover-up. Well issue solved, he says it wasn’t a diss. Let’s move on folks!

In the age of the BlackBerry, are doctors the last-standing patrons of the pager? Drug dealers long ago shed the antiquated devices for PDAs, so why are members of the medical community still holding on tight to their little black boxes?

“Our industry is what you would call a melting iceberg,” says Gary Ash, senior vice president of sales for USA Mobility. “But we see a pretty steady base of customers in health care.” Approximately half of USA Mobility’s revenue is rooted in medical sales.

So why the love for this old-school device? Reliability and cost are factors, but many think beepers are just tech comfort food for the medical community’s old guard.

“To them, the pager’s an insulation to not get a bunch of superfluous calls. It’s a protection,” says Michael Bresler, a clinical professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Added bonus: There’s no such thing as beeper thumb syndrome.

Motorola, which introduced the commercial pager in the ’70s, discontinued production in 2002. Many shops have stopped selling beepers.

But while the “youngsters” in the field have started slowly bringing in their BlackBerries, many doctors are resisting — saying they like their old devices just fine, thank you very much.

Plus, there’s also the matter of bedside etiquette in hospitals. “If the beeper goes off, the doctor will silence it, but they are always sneaking a peek at their BlackBerrys,” says Janice Powers, a nurse in a Connecticut hospital. Looks like even physicians are unable to resist the temptation of a CrackBerry

The Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition is a leftist political coalition of mayors from about 400 United States cities, with a stated agenda of “making the public safer by getting illegal guns off the streets.” The group was formed by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The coalition’s CEO is Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

The majority of members of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition are Democrats.

Criticism of Methods and Hypocrisy

Bloomberg has been sued for defamation by a Smyrna, Georgia gun dealer represented by former congressman Bob Barr.^[1][2]

Indicted, convicted, and scandalized members

A substantial number of member of the coalition have been indicted in recent months, on felony charges. Here in the US, conviction of felony means the immediate loss of both the right to vote and the right to own a gun for the rest of one’s life. This is an organization that espouses doing away with “illegal guns”, yet a surprising number of their members have made choices in their lives that have set themselves on the path to being disenfranchised from ever owning a gun.

Personal character and integrity are prerequisites for anyone entering public office, to serve in an elected position of “special trust and confidence”, such as a mayorship. Abuses of that trust, gross lapses of integrity, and forays into criminal conduct are not tolerated in our society. If anything, elected politicians are held to a higher standard than the general public, and their actions are closely watched. For an elected official to become a criminal, when they themselves are entrusted to protect us from criminals is nearly the most heinous and unforgivable thing imaginable in a democratically-ruled republic. For some of these same individuals to continue to be considered members in good standing of a “crime-fighting” organization–and not even censured by the organization–has been criticized as being hypocritical.

Four current and former members of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition are currently under felony indictments, five others were recently convicted of felonies, one indicted member died of a heart attack before completion of his trial, and one member was recently convicted of a violent misdemeanor. The indicted and convicted members and former members include:

• Former Mayor Gary Becker^[3] of Racine, Wisconsin is under five felony indictments for child pornography, attempted child sexual assault and child enticement.^[4] He resigned after pleading not guilty and being released on bond.^[5] His location is currently being monitored electronically, as he awaits a trial scheduled to begin in October, 2009.^[6]
• Former Mayor David Della Donna^[7], of Guttenberg, New Jersey was indicted under a Federal extortion and mail fraud charges.^[8] He was convicted in 2008^[9] and sentenced to four years and three months in federal prison.^[10]
• Mayor Sheila Dixon was indicted in 2009 on twelve counts^[11], comprising four counts of perjury, two counts of misconduct, three counts of theft, and three counts of fraudulent misappropriations.^[12] The felony theft charges stem partly from incidents in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 in which she allegedly misappropriated gift cards intended for the poor and used them for personal purchases.^[13][14] Dixon’s trial, originally scheduled for September 8, 2009, was postponed to November 9, 2009.^[15]
• Mayor Jerramiah Healy was convicted for obstruction of justice in 2007^[16] and more recently was implicated in the corruption sweep in New Jersey involving the sale of body parts and money laundering. In all, 44 individuals were indicted. (Healy was named as “JC Official 4″ and implicated, but was not indicted, in the probe.)^[17][18][19]
• Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was indicted, arrested, and convicted. and subsequently jailed for 99 days. Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to two felony obstruction of justice charges stemming from his efforts to cover up an extramarital affair. He also pleaded no contest to charges of assaulting a police officer attempting to serve a subpoena on a Kilpatrick friend in that case.^[20] The charges and allegations (not all against Kilpatrick himself) were of marital infidelity, conspiracy, perjury, corruption and murder.^[21] Following Kilpatrick’s conviction, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms called on Kilpatrick to resign from the Coalition.^[22]
• Mayor Larry Langford was investigated in 2007 by the SEC on corruption charges. In 2008 a lawsuit was filed against him for illegally accepting $156,000 in cash and benefits. On December 1, 2008, Larry Langford was arrested by the FBI on a 101 count indictment^[23] alleging conspiracy, bribery, fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns^[24] in connection with a long-running bribery scheme.^[25][26][27] His trial date was postponed to October 2009, and the trial venue moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama.^[28]
• Deceased Mayor Frank Melton at the time of his death was under felony indictment on civil rights charges.^[29] (He died before a scheduled re-trial, following a mistrial.) In 2006, Melton pled guilty to a firearms charge, stemming from a raid (in which he was armed with a concealed pistol) on a suspected crack house. Melton conducted the extra-official Buford Pusser-style raid without a warrant to “bust up” a duplex apartment, accompanied by a group of youths that were not sworn law enforcement officers. That same event led to Melton’s civil rights indictment. In November 2006, he pleaded no contest to three misdemeanor charges: carrying a gun in a park and in a church, and carrying a concealed weapon.^[30]
• Mayor Eddie Perez was indicted on bribery, fabricating evidence, and conspiracy to fabricate evidence felony charges.^[31] Perez turned himself in to state police, stating that he had a lapse in judgment but did nothing illegal, and vowed that he would not step down as Hartford’s mayor.^[32] He was arraigned on September 8, 2009.^[33] His trial date was postponed to November 2009^[34], and then to February, 2010.^[35] On September 2, 2009 Perez was again arrested, and additionally charged with first-degree larceny by extortion, stemming from a no-bid parking lot deal, unrelated to the other corruption charges.^[36] He again proclaimed that he would stay in office, despite these new felony charges.^[37]
• Former Mayor Samuel Rivera, of Passaic, New Jersey was convicted of corruption, influence peddling, and extortion charges.^[38][39] In August 2008 he pled guilty,and was sentenced to 21 months in prison.^[40]
• In 2008, former Mayor Will Wynn was convicted of Class C misdemeanor, for a choking assault on a man who had crashed a party.^[41]

Five current members of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition have been troubled by scandals that involved firearms:

• As New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg came into office, he inherited a chronic firearms permit favoritism scandal from his predecessors that still remains an unresolved issue. Writing in the New York Sun, attorney David Kopel observed: “The problem is acute in New York City. Celebrities, the ultra-wealthy, and the politically influential get carry permits. But many of the people who need them the most — such as stalking victims, or crime witnesses who have been threatened by the criminal’s friends — often do not.”^[42] There are currently only about 36,169 permits to keep firearms in private homes in New York City, with the majority issued to retired police officers. Of these permit holders, only 2,516 are more liberally licensed for concealed carry outside their homes. The issuance of permits is discretionary in New York City, per Penal Law 400^[43]. (It is considered a “may issue” locality, unlike the “shall issue” policy used for concealed carry in most other localities.) Despite “tight” restrictions on “demonstrated need or special danger”, a who’s-who list of celebrities, billionaires^[44], entertainers^[45], professional athletes^[46], and politicians^[47] has somehow managed to get firearms permits. This list includes New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, publisher Michael Korda, and talk show host Howard Stern.^[48] In 2007, The New York Post reported that gun license holders include financier Donald Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr., Queens district attorney Richard A. Brown, Westchester County district attorney, Janet DiFiore, music executive Tommy Mottola, chief executive of Marvel Comics, Isaac Perlmutter, radio show host Don Imus, lawyer Barry Slotnick, lawyer Raoul Felder; publisher Robert Forbes, the cab-driving political activist Fernando Mateo, former new York Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno (recently indicted for fraud), actor Robert De Niro, actor Harvey Keitel, film producer Martin Bregman, cosmetics heir Ronald Lauder, and Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler.^[49][50] All of these individuals have retained their gun licenses under Bloomberg’s “tough on guns” administration. The New York Post noted: “Television news anchor John Roland, who let his license lapse in 2006, got his gun permit back in 2007.”^[51] A surprisingly high number of celebrities have concealed carry permits, rather than the more common “keep at home” (premise) permits. According to The New York Times, “Mr. Bloomberg asked Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly to look at the issue, and added: ‘If you want a gun permit, you should have to really show that your life is in danger, and that having a gun will protect you, will improve the chances of you surviving.’”^[52] But despite Bloomberg’s publicly-stated concern, there have been no announcements of any celebrity gun permits being rescinded, or any reforms to prevent favoritism, cronyism, bribes, or other abuse of discretion in license issuance. With a city population of 8.3 million, the 36,169 gun permit holders represent just .043% of the population and the 2,516 concealed carry permit holders represent a scant .003% of the population.
• Mayor Richard M. Daley has been criticized for the city of Chicago’s long-standing practice of providing armed bodyguards for a number of city politicians, including city clerk James “Jim” Laski. In the city clerk scandal, Daley was shamed into removing the perk of the armed bodyguards for the clerk. The Chicago Sun-Times reported: “The decision was made almost immediately after Laski became the first elected official to be caught up in the Hired Truck scandal. But Daley insisted that the bribery and extortion charges against Laski were not the trigger. It was the fact that, until this week, Laski had not been showing up for work.”^[53] Laski was later convicted of taking $48,000 in bribes and received a two year sentence.^[54] Former Mayor Eugene Sawyer, City Treasurer Judy Rice and Alderman Edward M. Burke, chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee still have armed bodyguards.^[55]
• Mayor Gerald Jennings of Albany, New York was implicated in a scandal regarding the alleged illegal purchase of 52 machine guns.^[56] It is unclear whether the weapons were purchased for departmental use or for the use of private individuals. Weapons were delivered to Police Department addresses but apparently paid for with private funds. The Department has not produced a list of weapons, their location, the names of the individuals who purchased them, or their disposition or destruction. At least one later turned up, illegally for sale to the public, in an area gun store. The police officer who sold the gun to the store has testified that he bought it from a Police Union official who was also the Department’s armorer.^[57] The current Chief of Police is the fifth appointed by Jennings.^[58] The case is still open.^[59]
• Following the illegal seizure of firearms in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Mayor Ray Nagin settled a lawsuit and had a permanent injunction issued prohibiting Nagin or any New Orleans employee from confiscating any lawfully possessed firearm and ordering the return of hundreds of illegally confiscated firearms. (They had been confiscated at Mayor Nagin’s order.).^[60] Nagin’s administration has also been troubled by reports of improprieties with the police department evidence rooms, where guns were stolen, guns were allowed to rust, and $200,000 in cash was stolen.^[61][62]
• Mayor Bill White’s administration has been embarrassed by an ongoing scandal involving guns stolen from the Houston Police Department’s evidence room. In January 2009, the Houston Chronicle reported: “For months, maybe years, people with criminal backgrounds had access to secure areas of the police station, including a property room from which 30 guns disappeared within six months, according to internal police documents. The documents, obtained by the Houston Chronicle, indicated that lax security created an environment ripe for theft. No one has been charged in the gun thefts, although police suspected telephone repairmen who admitted stealing other items, and a temporary employee who had access to the property room while awaiting trial on aggravated robbery charges.”^[63][64]

Twelve mayors that had been members^[65] have withdrawn from the organization, claiming either that they were misled about the group’s anti-gun platform, or that they were enrolled in the coalition without their knowledge.^[66][67][68] They are:

In her resignation letter, Mayor Patricia Shontz of Madeira Beach, Florida wrote, “I am withdrawing because I believe the MAIG is attempting to erode all gun ownership, not just illegal guns. Additionally, I have learned that the MAIG may be working on issues which conflict with legal gun ownership.” She added, “It appears the MAIG has misrepresented itself to the Mayors of America and its citizens. This is gun control, not crime prevention.”^[78]

In his resignation letter to Bloomberg, Mayor Harry Moore stated: “It is simply unconscionable that this coalition, under your leadership, would call for a repeal of the Shelby /Tiahrt amendment that helps to safeguard criminal investigations and the lives of law enforcement officers, witnesses and others by restricting access to firearms trace data solely to law enforcement. How anyone, least of all a public official, could be willing to sacrifice such a law enforcement lifeline in order to gain an edge in suing an industry they have political differences with is repugnant to me. The fact that your campaign against this protective language consisted of overheated rhetoric, deception and falsehoods is disturbing.”^[84]

The resignations of Kevin Jackson and Jared Fuhriman left the state of Idaho completely unrepresented in the organization, and Alaska with just one representative mayor. Since Mayor Rocky Anderson of Salt Lake City left office, it has also left Utah unrepresented. Mayor Kathy Taylor of Tulsa, Oklahoma has announced that she will not seek re-election^[85], and as of September, 2009, her name has been removed from the coalition’s roster. This also leaves Oklahoma unrepresented. According to the U.S. Conference of Mayors there are 1,201 cities in the US with a population of 30,000 or more that are headed by mayors.^[86] Several of the mayors in the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition represent even smaller towns and cities–particularly in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, which are disproportionately represented.

Legislative Initiatives

With the stated goal of reducing the number of straw purchase of guns, the coalition has favored new legislation to require mandatory reporting of lost or stolen guns.^[87] As of September, 2009, seven states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Rhode Island) and the District of Columbia have laws criminalizing failure to report lost and stolen guns to law enforcement. Several other states and local governments are working to pass similar laws.^[88] Critics counter that straw purchases are already illegal, and hence mandatory theft and loss reporting laws are redundant.^[89]

Former prosecuting attorney C.D. Michel analyzed mandatory reporting laws, using one in Ventura County, California as an example: “Ironically, the ordinance cannot be used against the real bad guys. No law can compel lawbreakers to report themselves. So a straw purchaser who legally buys a gun cannot be compelled to report that he resold it illegally. And since it wasn’t actually lost or stolen, he hasn’t violated the ordinance. Similarly, if a felon prohibited from possessing a gun illegally possesses one anyway, and it is lost or stolen, he can be prosecuted for having the gun in the first place, but cannot be prosecuted for failing to incriminate himself by reporting the loss. Enforcement of these ordinances places prosecutors in a precarious legal and ethical position. Say a straw-purchaser’s gun is recovered at a crime scene and traced back to him. If he lies to police claiming his gun was “stolen” when he really sold it on the black market, will we nonetheless prosecute him for something he did not do (fail to report the “stolen” gun — which wasn’t actually stolen) but to which he “confessed”? Ethics and legality aside, securing a misdemeanor conviction for failing to report a theft (that never occurred) likely prohibits prosecuting the straw purchaser for the more serious felony black market sale or for making a false statement to police. Perhaps worse, gun owners who truly are burglary victims must now hesitate to speak with police if their stolen gun is recovered at a crime scene. If the gun owner failed to report the loss at all, or on time, she faces possible criminal prosecution if she cooperates with police investigating the recovered gun. She should remain silent, get a lawyer and seek immunity first. Legal representation may also be appropriate when a gun is first discovered missing. The owner can be prosecuted if the theft is not reported within 48 hours of when the owner “should have known” the gun was missing. Proponents have made clear they believe “responsible” gun owners should know where their gun is at every single moment and “should know” a gun is gone immediately. And the fear of prosecution will encourage those who miss the 48-hour window not to report the loss at all. Effectively, these ordinances place the legitimate gun owner in jeopardy of prosecution for becoming a victim of a crime. In light of these liabilities, gun-rights groups and the criminal-defense bar have begun advising gun owners — who would ordinarily be happy to assist police with their investigation — that they need a lawyer if they are contacted by police.”^[90]

Another story comes from today’s edition of The New York Post about tax cheat Charlie Rangel, (D-NY).

It appears that Rangel has not reported any income from property he owns in the Harlem district of New York. This “rundown Harlem row house” has been shown on tax records as having no one living there for eight years some how has generated thousands of unreported income to the NY Congressman. A break down of his tax returns as reported by The Post reveals the following:

He filed amended disclosure forms last month showing that in 2004 he failed to reveal between $500,001 and $1 million in capital gains and rent from the building.

Rangel’s reporting of his yearly rental income for the building has swung widely — from nothing to up to $50,000, the federal disclosure forms show.

* In 1987, he claimed the building brought in between $5,001 and $15,000.

* In 1991, he amended his 1990 form to say the property produced a loss.

* Less than a month later, he said the gross rent was between $15,000 and $50,000, the same amount he reported in 2002.

* In 1993 and 1994, he failed to enter anything about the property’s income.

* From 1995 to 2000, he checked a box to show he earned no income.

* In 2001, Rangel claimed income for the building, reporting between $2,501 and $5,000 a year. He did the same in 2002 and 2003, then amended the reports to show income between $15,000 and $50,000.”

A Rangel spokesman did not directly address the apparent lapses in the congressman’s rental record, saying the lawmaker had taken care of any mistakes on his disclosure forms by filing amendments last month.

But the amendments covered only 2002 to 2006, not the eight years when he claimed no rent. The amendments revealed his failure to report millions of dollars in assets.

Last year, The Post revealed Rangel’s failure to declare $75,000 in rental income on his villa in the Dominican Republic.”

How is that a man who holds the powerful position as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee can just “forget” what property he owns and how much he should have payed in taxes? Makes one wonder if Old Charlie is get a wee bit senile. No, I think it more of the “I’m a powerful member of Congress and the rules that apply to you, just don’t apply to me”. In other words… CORRUPTION!

But, as I said before, the Madam of the Best Little Whore House in Washington is turning a blind eye and deaf ear to the problems of a member of her party.

NICOLE Rott Abidor decided to join JDate after her sister, Jaclyn Rott Jarnicki, found love on the site in just one month.

What is going on in Long Island county? There have been a string of violent attacks against minorities that are linked to racism and bigotry. The New York Post reports that less than a week ago,

two teenagers plead not guilty to assault as a hate crime in the robbery and beating of Ecuadorean day laborer Milton Balbuca. A 20-year-old also was charged in the Aug. 14 attack.

Police said they shouted anti-Mexican remarks and racial epithets as they attacked Balbuca near the Patchogue train station – the same area where another Ecuadorean immigrant, 37-year-old dry cleaning worker Marcelo Lucero, was stabbed and killed in November. Patchogue is about 15 miles southeast of Smithtown near Long Island’s southern shore.

Seven teenagers have pleaded not guilty to hate crime and other charges in Lucero’s death, which helped spur an ongoing U.S. Justice Department investigation into bias crimes on eastern Long Island.

Strife over thousands of immigrants from Central and South America has percolated in the area for nearly a decade, sometimes erupting in violence.

Two men are serving long prison terms for attempted murder after luring two Mexican laborers to a warehouse in 2000 with the promise of work, then beating them with shovels and landscaping tools. In 2003, teenagers tossed fireworks through a Mexican family’s window on the Fourth of July, damaging the home.

This pattern of racist hate attacks has now targeted Muslims, and in a case reminiscent of the one in Seattle involving Eric Gardner, a young man described as having a “virulent hatred for Islam” attacked two women and threatened to kill them because of their Islamic dress and religion. Of course, to those in the anti-Muslim cottage industry it won’t be anything, in fact they might spin it as a set up or as an unimportant minor incident. They will also deny any involvement or part in stoking the flames that contribute to such heinous crimes.

In the same article the NY Post reports,

A landscaper with a virulent hatred of Islam tried to run over two Muslim women at a suburban gas station after threatening to kill them because of their religion, police said Thursday.

Joseph Ballance, 23, pleaded not guilty Thursday to aggravated harassment in the Aug. 20 confrontation…Ballance approached 49-year-old Chervern Cartier and her 20-year-old daughter, who were wearing the traditional Muslim robes called abayas, in a service station parking lot in Smithtown, authorities said. The daughter’s name was not released.

After hurling epithets at the women and threatening to “chop you up into little pieces and kill you,” Ballance spat on their car and drove his own toward them before driving off, according to police and a court complaint.

The self-employed landscaper later told investigators, “They don’t belong here” and “They shouldn’t be walking around like that,” Detective Sgt. Robert Reecks said.

“He is full of hatred,” Reecks said. “He saw them, the way they were dressed, and it just set him off.”

Ballance was being held on $10,000 cash bond. He is represented by the county Legal Aid Society, where the telephone rang unanswered Thursday evening. The organization has a policy of not commenting on ongoing cases. A message left at his Islandia home wasn’t immediately returned.

The women weren’t hurt. One of them took down the license plate number on the car Ballance was driving and gave it to police, Reecks said. No working telephone number for Cartier could be found.

The misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge against Ballance is used for crimes related to a victim’s race, religion or certain other characteristics. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a national Muslim advocacy group, urged authorities to consider federal civil rights charges against Ballance. A spokesman for federal prosecutors didn’t immediately return a telephone call Thursday evening.

So will the haters out there continue to claim that Islamophobia doesn’t exist? That it is a misnomer? That fearing someones religious dress is not irrational? Maybe Pamela Geller the “freedom fighter” will lionize this man and set up an elaborate defense that he was justified?

It would appear from reading articles and watching the news, I’m the only female that has a garlic pouch & crucifix armed and ready when Teddy’s name is mentioned (much as I do for Bill Clinton)!  I hear his name and I think “misogynistic, murdering drunkard!”  Liberal women, on the other hand, hear his name and they are ready to embrace and kiss him.  Feminists.  Hmph.
