If you think your sleepy puppy videos are moving and avant-garde enough to make it into the Guggenheim Museum, the members of Animal Collective will be happy to let you know whether or not you’re right. As Vulture reports, the band is one of the jury members selecting who gets into YouTube Play, an exhibition of video art at the famous New York museum this fall. YouTube Play is taking submissions until July 31. I really hope “Teenage Mutant Hardcore Turtles” makes it in.

The jury also includes singer and performance artist Laurie Anderson, The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky, and art stars like Ryan McGinley and Takashi Murakami.
Psychic Chasms, the 2009 debut album from Neon Indian, established young mastermind Alan Palomo as one of chillwave’s capo figures. It landed the band on countless websites and on the summer festival circuit, and it placed high on our year-end list. And now, nearly a year after its initial release, Brits will be able to learn what the fuss is about.

On September 20, Palomo’s own Static Tongues imprint will release Psychic Chasms in the UK. The release includes Mind Ctrl: Psychic Chasms Possessed, an evocatively titled set of bonus tracks, which include the Mountain Dew-sponsored jam “Sleep Paralysist”, as well as remixes from folks like Toro Y Moi, the Antlers, YACHT, Javelin, DNTEL, and Bibio.

The devastating new single from Austin’s SLEEP ∞ OVER, whose dream-like “ghost’n’b” pop has elicited comparisons to Cocteau Twins, Nite Jewel, Beach House, and the like, is now available for pre-order on Forest Family.

Apologies for the headline, folks, but it truly does explain last night’s scene in St. Louis. As part of their currently ongoing summer tour, Kings of Leon made a stop at the Gateway City’s Verizon Wireless Amphitheater last night, but after just three songs, the band was forced to cancel the remainder of their set, citing “safety concerns.”

No further explanation was given at the time, but drummer Nathan Followill later revealed more details on Twitter (via Gigwise), specifically noting that it had something to do with defecating pigeons — yes, defecating pigeons.

“So sorry St. Louis. We had to bail, pigeons shitting in [bassist Jared Followill]’s mouth and it was too unsanitary to continue,” Nathan wrote.

Upon receiving critical replies, Nathan added: “Don’t take it out on Jared, it’s the ****ing venues fault. You may enjoy being shit on but we don’t.”

The band has not yet revealed whether the date will be rescheduled. In the meantime, you can try to catch Kings of Leon at any of their other upcoming Northern American tour dates, though, do be forewarned. Per one of the shitting pigeon’s Twitter account, they’re already prepping for tonight’s show in Chicago.

Update: Livenation will be issuing refunds to all attendees.

Update #2: The band has released a statement through their publicist:

An infestation of pigeons living in the rafters of the Verizon Amphitheatre in St. Louis, MO, forced the Kings of Leon to walk offstage after three songs last night. Even though opening bands The Postelles and The Stills came offstage complaining of getting riddled with large amounts of pigeon excrement, the Kings of Leon decided to carry on regardless. The band felt it would be unfair to the fans to cancel the show at that late moment.

“I’m surprised they stayed on for as many songs as they did,” said Andy Mendelsohn of Vector Management. “Jared was hit several times during the first two songs. On the third song, when he was hit in the cheek and some of it landed near his mouth, they couldn’t deal any longer. It’s not only disgusting — it’s a toxic health hazard. They really tried to hang in there. We want to apologize to our fans in St. Louis and will come back as soon as we can.”

When the band arrived earlier in the day, the venue warned management that there had been a significant pigeon infestation problem with summer shows over the years, but they were doing all they could to fix it.

“We couldn’t believe what The Postelles and The Stills looked like after their sets,” said Jared Followill. “We didn’t want to cancel the show, so we went for it. We tried to play. It was ridiculous.”

Kings of Leon are headed to Chicago tonight to perform at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre as scheduled.

Since becoming addicted to their 2008 debut “The Rhumb Line”, I’ve been itching for a new Ra Ra Riot record for quite some time (“Discovery” was a damn great holdover though). Well, this innate need for new music is finally coming into fruition, as their sophomore record “The Orchard”, is set to be released August 24th by Barsuk Records.

Here’s a preview of 2 new songs, “Keep It Quiet” and “Too Dramatic”, which for some reason the titles tell me to take heed, ask the Lil’ Pixie :-/

Everyone’s favorite furry creature, Noah Lennox aka Panda Bear, is releasing a new single called “Tomboy” this Tuesday, July 13th. From what I can hear, looks to be yet another lovely mesh of Beach Boys surf acid pop and experimental clink clangs. What else would we expect from one of the most prolific and creative artists of the past decade.

Cut Copy have announced a small set of tour dates the weekend of Aug 6-8. This includes a free show in NYC on Sunday, August 8th at The Williamsburg Waterfront as a part of the free Jelly Pool Party series. This follows the news that the band is working on a new album that is set to come out in January. They are locked away in their Melbourne studio finishing it up.

I can’t wait to hear new material. You can surely expect to get some at the free show. There is no reason not to attend it. I’ll be there for sure. I have never seen Cut Copy live before, so this just made my day.

words by Rachel Kowal, photos by David Andrako

Before the show started, the crowd in front of the bandshell sat and chatted leisurely to pass time, but when they saw Suckers walk on stage, they immediately jumped to their feet, cheering. In their cool shades and neon-colored clothing, Suckers had definitely embraced the outdoor park setting. “We’re from Brooklyn. Celebrate!” shouted Suckers singer Quinn Walker early in the show. Drummer Brian Aiken thrashed around with such intensity that before long, his face was nearly the color of his fuchsia shirt. They only played seven songs, but the group harmonies, well-placed trumpet cameos, and over-the-top facial expressions from the drummer made for a pretty entertaining show, and the Brooklyn band’s music proved to be a good introduction to the evening. Many of their songs had slower starts, but they definitely filled out by the time the choruses hit.

Tokyo Police Club‘s music was more immediate. Instead of building up their sound gradually, they seemed to put it out there up front, and their sound was a bit more raucous overall. Like Suckers, Tokyo Police Club really seemed to be enjoying the picturesque setting. It had been another hot day in Brooklyn, but it cooled off just enough to be pleasant for the show. “I hope you enjoyed the beautiful day in the park,” said singer Dave Monks. “You guys should really check out these trees when you get a chance. The trees are killing it.” And he was right. The trees lining the back side of the bandshell were waving gently in the wind as if swaying to the music.

Tokyo Police Club showcased a number of songs from their recent album, Champ. After their set had ended, the eager crowd tried a few different methods to get Passion Pit out on stage, but neither the chanting nor the slow clap did the trick. Shortly after 9:00, the tech guy gave a signal with his flashlight and yellow lights started flickering madly on stage as the band walked out. The production value definitely went up with each band’s performance. For Passion Pit, each song seemed to have its own color scheme for lights: reds, oranges, purples, blues, and greens all made an appearance as the evening progressed. By the third song, a colorful banner (resembling the cover art of the Manners re-issue) fell against the backdrop to the delight of the audience.

For the most part, the sound throughout the evening was pretty good for an outdoor show. But the vocals did seem to be a little low in the mix – especially for Passion Pit. I’m not sure if it was just where I was standing or if there was a technical oversight, but there were times when I’d see Passion Pit singer Michael Angelakos open his mouth as if to sing but no sound came out. Of course, it didn’t help that he had a tendency of holding the mic a bit too far away. (Were the officials trying to thwart the non-paying park goers from hearing the show outside of the official venue space?)

Regardless of the levels, the crowd seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. Throughout the show, they sang along, clapped to the beat, jumped up and down, and danced. There was also more than one attempt at crowd surfing as the evening progressed and the excitement mounted. The band was clearly thrilled to be performing in front of such a large, enthusiastic audience. Angelakos paced and danced around the stage with glee and kept effusively thanking everyone in between songs, eventually saying, “People make fun of me for always thanking everybody, but we’re just in awe of everything that’s just happened in the past year. This show sold out in like ten minutes. We’re from Boston, but this city made us. Thank you so much! This is the biggest show we’ve ever played.”

For their encore, Passion Pit played a delightful cover of the hit 1994 song “Dreams” by The Cranberries before closing with their own hit – “Sleepyhead.” Though the crowd left behind a wasteland of bottles and cups, the tinkling of the aluminum Bud cans as they rolled over the cement surface made for an oddly melodic exit.

They do it again, at an even bigger venue with the same lineup (and the addition of We Were Promised Jetpacks) tonight (6/30) at Colonel’s Row on Governors Island.
