Hello, Funny One here. I went out with my sister to see the movie “The Dark Knight Rises

Hello, Funny One here. I went out with my sister to see the movie “The Dark Knight Rises”. It’s so good! Christian Bale’s acting is amazing. I think he should win an Oscar for it. It was an amazing movie. But it’s sad that it’s all over now. I want to go and see it again. Next time it’ll be at the Imax!

Anyways, today’s state is Missouri. I drew myself in the movie “Meet Me In St. Louis.” I haven’t actually seen it, though. Oh well. What is there to see and do in Missouri? Well, The Candy Crown King restaurant looks great! They have amazing sounding sundaes and shakes. Mmmmm sundaes and shakes. Also the Bailey’s Chocolate Bar looks great. The menu looks super yummy. You could take a ride on the Mississippi River aboard a replica 19th century paddle-wheeler. If you want to know more about Missouri then there are many places to visit like the Old Courthouse and experience a big part of U.S. history. It was built between 1839 and 1862. The Courthouse is the site where an enslaved husband and wife, Dred and Harriet Scott, sued for their freedom, and Virginia Minor sued for a woman’s right to vote in 1872.

If you love motorcycles, then you should go to see the Harley Davidson Factory. It looks cool. There’s even a Money Museum. I wonder if they give free samples of money. hehehehe. There’s also a Legoland there, too. Visit the Fantastic Caverns for the only ride-through cave in America. Visitors will discover that even though sunlight can’t penetrate these deep caverns, life can still exist. It really would be cool to go on the Columbia Star Dinner Train, as it offers dinner train trips which depart Saturday nights at 7PM and there is also a Sunday Brunch train departing at 11:30 AM. Guests will dine onboard the vintage 1930/40′s train and have a relaxing journey that will be about 2 and a half hours to 3 hours. Good news, there’s even a fully stocked bar! Mmmmm Alcohol…

Our house. A very very very fine house.

» THE SETUP

For years, we didn’t know who the architect of Campbell House was. It was assumed that the developer used stock architectural plans, or William Fulton — an architect who designed buildings for James Lucas — was responsible for the design. Now we know who the architect (in this case, architects) really is.

While digging through the St. Louis County Circuit Court Records at the Missouri State Archive, we found a mechanic’s lien for our property, dated July 14, 1851. On the lien, the architects are listed along with their fees. The image is below, but here’s a transcription:

[From] Messrs. Donaldson & Hall
To Edgar & Walsh
1851 July 14
To sketch ground plans & front elevation
for two houses proposed to be erected in Lucas Place…..$5.00
To drawings for two houses designed to
be erected in Bremin [sic] & viewing grounds of same…..$15.00
To plans and full inspections for two three story
houses with finished basements, stables, etc.
complete for Lucas Place including detail or
backing drawings………………………………………………..$25.00
To alterations in same substituting plane
for ornamental fronts, and making same
three story without basement finish …………………………$5.00
[Total] $50.00
Rec’d Payments

[Note: The document references two houses. This is correct; Edgar and Walsh were hired to design 20 Lucas Place (Campbell House) and the house next door at 22 Lucas Place.]

The architects — Joseph C. Edgar and Thomas Waryng Walsh – worked together for three years, between 1850 and 1853. During this period they completed five public buildings including Disciples of Christ Christian Church on Fifth Street [demolished], Old St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, and the Kirkwood Hotel [lost to fire in 1867].

What did Edgar and Walsh build for us? A conventional townhouse in the Greek Revival style, a look that was popular in New York and Philadelphia in the 1850s. Three-stories with a two-story flounder (rear wing of the house, usually considered the “working area” or a space for servants), Campbell House has a full basement, seven levels on five floors and approximately 11,000 square feet of space. (That’s a lot….the average American home is 2,700 square feet.)

Since the Campbells lived here for 84 years, they changed a few things. They added a large kitchen on the back of the house. They enclosed a side porch to make the Morning Room (a small sitting room). In 1867 they added a floor on top of the two-story flounder to create three more rooms.

The Eugene Field House was the second-to-last house in Walsh's Row of twelve attached homes. Note the placement of the building right next to the sidewalk with no room for a front yard. The Eugene Field House was saved from the wrecking ball when the other eleven homes were demolished in 1934.

Campbell House and the rest of the houses on Lucas Place were significant because the design of the houses and they way they were arranged on their lots were different than anything else St. Louis had seen. Prior to Lucas Place, most homes in St. Louis were attached, row-style and were built right on the sidewalk with no front yards, very much like the Eugene Field House. Campbell House has a front yard and, even though it was built in a townhouse style, it was four feet away from its next door neighbor. (The Campbells had an empty lot on the other side.)

» ACTIVITY: MY HOUSE
Suitable for grades K-5

We live in all sorts of different buildings. Some of us live in a house, others live in an apartment and some kids even live on wheels! Today, let’s pretend we’re architects and draw our own houses with elevations and floor plans. An elevation is a drawing of one side of your house, like this:

Front, rear and cutaway elevations of Campbell House.

Floorplans are a map of the rooms of your house, like this:

Floor plans of the first (top) and second (bottom) floors of Campbell House.

To get you started, click here to download and print a blank floor plan, then click here to download and print a blank elevation plan.

First, draw the floor plan of your house, using the blank plans you just printed and colored pencils, markers or crayons. Be sure to label each room: kitchen, living room, bathroom, your bedroom, and any other rooms you have. If you have a second (or third!) floor in your house, draw a separate floor plan for each floor. Not all rooms are perfectly square or rectangular, so draw the rooms true to their shape. It may help if you sit in the middle of each room and can see how all the walls come together. Make sure you include doorways and windows!

When you finish your floor plan, use the printout of the elevation plan to draw an elevation of the front of your house, complete with doors, windows, steps and any decorations that may be on the front of it. Is there a garage attached to your house? Is your house made of brick or wood or stucco? Include as many details as you can that make your house special.

After you’re done with your elevation and floor plans, have show and tell with your friends to explain the rooms of your house and what you like best about each one. When talking about the elevation, be sure to tell your classmates what makes your house unique and different from all the other houses or buildings on your street.

If you want to share what you did, email files over to shelley [at] campbellhousemuseum.org, and we’ll share your drawings on our blog! We hope you enjoy making drawings of your house, and be sure to check back in two weeks for another fun activity!

St. Louis children grow up with a special fondness for Ulysses S. Grant. Long before they learn that

St. Louis children grow up with a special fondness for Ulysses S. Grant. Long before they learn that historians credit him with saving the Union in the War Between the States, or the first healing of the South at the end of the Civil War, or that he signed the 15th Amendment into law granting African Americans and Native Americans the right to vote, they’re able to recognize the log cabin that he built here in 1856 and get their first glimpses of North American Bison roaming freely among a hundred other species of animals, as they explore what once was Grant’s farm.

Although others held title to the rolling stretch of prairie that St. Louisans know as Grant’s Farm none of them except the Anheuser Busch family became world-famous and even the Busch family referred to their property as Grant’s Farm. The founder of the Busch dynasty in the U.S., Adolphus Busch, who emigrated from Germany as a young man and made his way up the Mississippi River to St. Louis on a steamboat, became a great admirer of General Grant while serving under him during the Civil War.

In 1903 Adolphus Busch purchased 217 acres of the former White Haven estate “and built a palatial residence there”* calling it Grant’s Farm. In 1907 his son, August A. Busch, purchased Hardscrabble (the cabin Grant built with his own hands) and had it moved and re-assembled on what was now his estate.

Going to Grant’s Farm is as popular a St. Louis ritual as visiting the Gateway Arch. The settings are entirely different but both powerfully commemorate history in a beautiful natural setting.

I’ve often thought that Grant would love the Clydesdales (the great Scottish breed of horses) that have become so identified with his farm since the Busch brewing family began raising them there. For Ulysses Grant loved horses and was from boyhood a horse whisperer, with a natural gift for cajoling and gentling a horse.

Grant first visited this site in 1843 at the invitation of his best friend and former roommate at West Point, Fred Dent, whose father Frederick owned the land and had named his estate White Haven, for the plantation he’d left behind in Maryland. Recently assigned to Jefferson Barracks, Grant met and fell in love with Fred’s younger sister Julia, who loved to ride as much as he did, and with whom he forged a friendship that would last their lifetimes; their marriage thirty-seven years until his death from cancer.

The newly married Grants lived at White Haven off and on for several years beginning in 1848. Two of their children were born there and while he was away, embroiled in a horrific civil war, Ulysses (“Sam” to his friends, “Ulyss” to Julia) dreamed of building a great stable back at White Haven and raising thoroughbred horses. The stable that stands today (dating to 1872) houses a wonderful museum dedicated to one of the nation’s greatest military leaders and an American President who never dreamed of becoming one.

A quiet, soft-spoken man with a talent for painting, Ulysses Grant (with the encouragement of his good friend Sam Clemens) authored a personal memoir considered to be one of the greatest works of its kind ever published. Completed when he was in excruciating pain, four days before his death, the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant sold over 300,000 copies, netting his family $450,000 and rescuing them from financial ruin.

Like so many of Grant’s dreams the horse farm was never realized. Though subsequent owners of the land would breed horses there. Nor did his dreams of teaching mathematics. But the years Grant spent at White Haven molded his character in important ways that are commemorated at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site.

Memorabilia related to Grant’s early, military, and presidential life may be viewed along with photographs of family, his presidential inauguration, contemporaries whose lives he impacted and world travels.

Grant was born in a two-room cabin in Point Pleasant, Ohio and died in a cabin in the Adirondack Mountains in New York. He spent far more time away from his family in the military than he wished and failed at practically every civilian job he attempted, until fate called him to something dreadful and yet glorious; saving the nation he had sworn to protect and defend; something he was acutely equipped to do in battle.

Grant’s unflinching courage, his facility with numbers and mathematics, a photographic memory that allowed him to walk a terrain and remember every hill and hollow, his understanding as an expert horseman of the cavalry’s best use in battle and a brilliance for strategy that pitted him head to head with Robert E. Lee, forged the way to Union victory.

The National Park Service has done a splendid job of restoring Julia and Ulysses Grant’s St. Louis County home (where the young family enjoyed many happy times) and expanding it for learning experiences. Without the involvement of the park service and enormous effort on the parts of local preservationists and Missouri legislators it might have become yet another, suburban real estate development.

Park Ranger, Sherié Phillips, gave my husband Tom and I an excellent tour of the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site (http://www.nps.gov/ulsg/index.htm) recently, where one can really visualize life in rural St. Louis before and during the Civil War.

And the history of White Haven is very special. Here a young man raised in the free state of Ohio witnessed for the first time the cruel realities of slavery and began to develop a sensibility that would shape him into one of the most pro-active civil rights presidents in American history.

There are so many St. Louis sites related to Ulysses Grant before, during and following the Civil War – White Haven, Hardscrabble, Grant’s Farm, the Gravois Road over which he hauled firewood into the city for sale, the Old Courthouse where Grant emancipated William Jones in 1859, the horse race on Market Street that nearly cost him his life and the United States the South, Campbell House at 15th & Locust where Virginia hosted an elegant dinner in his honor in 1873, Fr. Dickson’s Cemetery where James Milton Turner (whom Grant appointed U.S. Ambassador to Liberia) is buried, and more – that I’ve constructed a Civil War St. Louis Coach Tour of which Grant is a major focus. I will be giving this tour on Saturday, August 6th from 10 am until 3 pm. If you’d like to join it please email me for a reservation: maureen@stlouiswalkingtours.com.

From Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day downtown St. Louis is at its most magical, decked out for the holidays in festive garlands and raiments of shining colors – silver and gold to be sure – along with the glowing orbs in Citygarden. Candles light the windows of the Old Courthouse, and the tallest of Christmas trees (the Salvation Army’s), lights Kiener Plaza.

Schnucks Culinaria at 9th and Olive Streets (http://www.culinariaschnucks.com/) was the site of a noontime flash mob Friday as singers and dancers from the St. Louis Women’s Chorale (http://stlwomenschorale.org/) filled the aisles with shopping carts and raised their voices in a lovely rendition of “The Carol of the Bells” to the accompaniment of violin, viola and cello and the surprise of busy shoppers and grocery clerks.

Friday’s flash mob at Culinaria and Saturday’s at Schnucks Market in Des Peres celebrated The St. Louis Women’s Chorale’s newly formed collaboration with Maryville University in West County where they are now resident. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrRZMi1i_wQ&feature=email Founded in 1995 by Dr. Richard and Mary Ann Shaw the Chorale is presently under the artistic direction of mezzo-soprano, Kathy Lawton Brown.

The management at Schnucks corporate offices were enthusiastic about the carolers coming to add to the already considerable sparkle of the highly innovative urban, hybrid grocery, cafe and wine bar which they call Culinaria.

They were equally open to the concept at their state of the art market in Des Peres which was packed Saturday morning when the flash mob was re-enacted – Rosewood Ensemble, bells and all.

The Schnuck family (http://www.schnucks.com/about.asp#history) has been known for their grocery enterprise since Anna Schnuck opened their first retail store in north St. Louis in 1939, two years after her husband, Edwin began a successful wholesale meat business nearby. Before long all three of their children – their older son, Edward, their daughter, Annette and her husband, Raymond Hanhardt, and their younger son, Donald with his wife, Doris opened stores of their own.

Today the Schnucks corporation operates five hundred stores in seven states! And it’s still very much a family business. One of Culinaria’s most charming features is a series of murals above the deli and meat departments that illustrate the evolution of farmers’ markets to grocery stores in St. Louis. The one on the left depicts a neighborhood confectionary (Anna’s perhaps?) and St. Louis’ historic Union Market (today the Drury Hotel Convention Center).

After sipping the most incredible hot cocoa in The Lou at The Cafe Cioccolato (http://www.iluvchocolate.com/) 816 Olive Street following the flash mob Friday with its organizers – my husband, Tom Kavanaugh and Paula and John Powel Walsh – I walked over to the AIA Bookstore to thank Director, Michelle Swatek, for inviting me to speak at the architects’ December lunch meeting about Christmas in Colonial St. Louis, the subject of my next blog. It is always a pleasure to meet with these wonderful designers, the literal shapers of this metropolis.

The American Institute of Architects Bookstore (http://aia-stlouis.org/books.asp) in the Lammert Building at 911 Washington Avenue is a marvelous place to shop not only during the winter holidays but year round. They carry a beautiful line of gifts in addition to books, greeting cards, calendars, and architectural miniatures. Whether you’re looking for Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, silk ties or architectural games, Debra Boussum, who presides over the AIA Bookstore will lead you to it.

I am enormously grateful to Michelle Swatek for her generous support of my walking tours, research and initiatives with respect to building-and-site-oriented St. Louis history. The DVD which I created two summers ago with my son, Tom Kavanaugh, Jr., A Walking Tour of Market Street, The Oldest Street in St. Louis, a downtown guide covering nearly a thousand years of St. Louis history, can be purchased in the AIA Bookstore along with other unique souvenirs of the Gateway City.

Between now and December 24th you might want to consider a trip downtown for the gifts you’ve not yet found for that special someone. From Macy’s to Macro Sun, the London Tea Room to Eve’s Apple, the AIA Bookstore to the Cafe Cioccolato, Left Bank Books to Ceci’s – it’s a bit like shopping the world. The rotunda of the Old Courthouse is lovely, festooned for the holidays and their gift shop contains excellent books on area history. For that very special child in your life (and what child isn’t?) be sure to check out the gift shop in the Eugene Field House & St. Louis Toy Museum at 634 South Broadway for charming and intriguing vintage toys. Then bundle up and take a leisurely stroll through Citygarden. Wait until dark so that you see the luminaries at their brightest, changing colors, delighting the eye, and I guarantee that you’ll hear carols playing in your imagination all the way home. Silver bells and all.

I had to visit Robertsbridge in East Sussex again this Summer, to work for 3 days with the lovely people at Community Playthings I have produced their catalogue photography for the last 3 years and its one job i always really look forward to! The people are great!, we get a lot done, but we still have fun and they always make sure i am fully lavished in food and drink all day, not to mention the amazing home made cookies they send me off with !

I also get to stay in this beautiful part of the world and explore a bit in the eve’s. This year i stayed in a beautiful B&B called ‘The Old Courthouse’ down the road in Hurst Green. I have to say it was amazing!! Tim and Julie Weare who run this beautiful place are the best hosts going… i even had my full English breakfast brought into my room! now that is service! so … if you want a nice little get away in the most historic part of Britian, get in touch with Julie on 01580 860080 and she will be glad to look after you! enjoy…

On June 28th, 2010 Metro St. Louis launched a Downtown Circulator decked out to resemble a trolley that’s turned out to be the best thing since sliced bread for tourists and home-towners alike. It’s not only cute and convenient (they run 10 to 20 minutes apart) but it’s the best deal in this, (and maybe any) town.

At a modest cost of $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children you can ride the Downtown Trolley an unlimited number of times between 5:30 am and 12:00 midnight, Monday thru Friday and between 7:00 am and midnight on Saturdays. (Think Cinderella; keep the stroke of midnight in the back of your mind, and you’re good to go.*)

The Trolley Route was designed to fill in the gaps downtown where MetroTrains do not run – making entertainment venues and city landmarks more accessible to tourists and making it more affordable and convenient for office workers to take a jaunt to restaurants on the other side of town without having to get the car in and out of the parking garage. And since it intersects with 18 separate city/county MetroBuses it facilitates getting into and around downtown for commuters.

Since Trolley stops are clearly labelled and frequent, and schedules are available to hotel concierges, navigating Downtown St. Louis is now easy for tourists. If they happen to catch a trolley driven by Kevin Woods, a St. Louisan who knows downtown like the back of his hand, they’re treated to a guided tour of the city’s landmarks and hot spots.

But what makes the Downtown Trolley particularly appealing is that it is very family-friendly. Parents and grandparents can take marvelous day-trips with the kids without the hassle of negotiating traffic, parking, feeding meters and knowing where to go. I took the trolley a week ago with the intention of scouting out the route for prospective adventures with my six grandkids who love to go exploring Downtown. Kevin Woods agreed that this is a wonderful way for grandparents to spend a day seeing the sights and sharing their own childhood memories of Downtown St. Louis with their grandchildren.

He also pointed out that since the trolleys are actually wheelchair accessible buses, individuals with disabilities can also go sight-seeing on the trolley with a minimum of difficulty.

Here are some possibilities for Day-Tripping on the Downtown Trolley and experiencing highlights of Downtown St. Louis:

1. Getting Started: If you’re a home-towner, park free at a designated Metro Park ‘n’ Ride lot & buy a round-trip ticket. Metro Train Stations connect with Trolley stops so you can step on and purchase a trolley ticket for the remainder of the day OR drive to 15th & Lucas Streets (1 block north of Washington Ave.), park all day in a lot at the City Museum for $5.00 & then catch the Downtown Trolley for $2.00. If you’re a tourist you simply purchase your ticket from the driver. Remember, hold on to that ticket – it’s good all day!

2. The City Museum – enormous indoor/outdoor play space and most kid-friendly, a-typical art museum in the U.S. (if not the world) http://www.citymuseum.org/home.asp. If you and the kids have never been here before, plan to spend half-a-day.

3. The Campbell House Museum - http://stlouis.missouri.org/501c/chm/ – from 15th & Washington walk 2 blocks south. One of the most remarkably restored, 3-story Victorian townhouses in the U.S. Most of what the Campbells owned is still inside the house. Guided tours are only $7.00 for adults. Children under 12 are free! Be sure to ask about the ghosts.

4. The Old Post Office, Central Express Library, Schnucks Culinaria & Macy’s – get off at 9th & Washington & walk 2 blocks south. Visit the Central Express Library in the beautiful Old Post Office Building. It’s a cool library space with the newest released titles. (If you or the kids have brought along a library card they can take things out and experience bringing home something valuable that you didn’t have to pay for.) Be sure to look at Daniel Chester French’s sculpture grouping, “Peace & Vigilance” in the atrium beyond the library and a neat, small, free museum of the building itself, in the east wing. There are also restrooms west of the atrium. You can take the kids to Schnucks Culinaria where they can pick out lunch & take the elevator to eat upstairs or walk 2 blocks east of the Old Post Office & take them to lunch at one of Macy’s two diningrooms.

5. Metropolitan Square, Starbuck’s & the Bread Co. – get off at Broadway & Olive across from Metropolitan Square – the tallest skyscraper downtown & walk through the lobby & atrium to see the murals. (By the way William Clark died across the street where there’s a placque on St. Louis Place.) Walk out the back of Met Square. Starbuck’s is across the street to your right. The Bread Co. is one block to the left. Frappacino or Frozen Mocha – your pick.

6. The Old Courthouse -http://www.nps.gov/jeff/index.htm – the treasure trove of St. Louis history downtown. Dred Scott sued for his freedom here. The museum is free. There are restrooms. Find a painting of Dred Scott. See what’s left of Manuel Lisa’s Fur Warehouse and how most of the houses of Colonial St. Louis were built. The park rangers are friendly and knowledgable. Ask them about the time capsule in the gold ball above the dome.

7. Citygarden – two blocks of fountains, wonderful sculpture and great skyscraper views. If you’ve brought the kids hopefully you’ve brought towels. Plan to stay awhile.

8. Soldier’s Memorial and Military Museum – www.stlsoldiersmemorial.org Admission is free but donations are appreciated. Point out the blood-red mosaics in the ceiling of the open court. Discuss why that representation of sky is not blue.

9. City Hall – St. Louis City Hall is modelled on the City Hall of Paris, France. That’s General Grant at the northeast corner and city founder Pierre Laclede at the northwest corner of Washington Square, outside City Hall.

10. The Scott Trade Center - for special events. Get off at the Civic Center stop and walk one block north.

11. Homeward Bound: If you took the train downtown you can catch one home at Civic Center (or any other MetroTrain stop. If you parked near The City Museum take the Downtown Trolley back to where you started.

Restaurants along the route include: The London Tea Room, Ozzie’s Sports Bar & Restaurant, Flannery’s, Washington Avenue Post, Lucas Park Grill, The Dubliner Pub, Mizu Sushi Bar, Mosaic, An American Place, Caleco’s, Tony’s, Mike Shannon’s and The Terrace View Cafe. Within two blocks of any stop are countless more - including Rooster, Charlie Gitto’s, Jimmy John’s, The St. Louis Bread Company, Hardees, and T.G.I. Friday’s.

If you’re splurging a bit you can take the kids to Left Bank Books at 10th & Locust to pick out a book, a puppet, or a puzzle or shop the clothes sales at Macy’s.

The Downtown Trolley is projected to run through December 2010 which suggests all sorts of fun possibilities for holiday sight-seeing and shopping. Of course the above suggestions provide for not one but many day trips downtown. And hopefully the route will prove so popular that it will continue into 2011. Congratulations to Metro, the Downtown St. Louis Community Improvement District and the Convention Visitors Commission for recognizing the critical need for this service and working together to provide it!

* Depending upon your location as midnight approaches you’ll want to refer to a Metro 99 Downtown Circulator Schedule since the last pick-up at your particular stop may actually be 11:52. Hopefully by this time of night your kids or grandkids are snug in bed at home. (And if you’re on your way back to your hotel from a night on the town you want to hop the last trolley before your glass slippers turn to dust.) Metro schedules are available online at: www.metrostlouis.org and in the Metro Visitors Center at Convention Center (northwest corner of 6th & Washington).
