CBS2′s Suzanne Marques recently sat down with the star at his L.A. home to talk about his fight for marriage equality and his big Broadway project.

The “Star Trek” fame said he’s been a performer his entire life.

“My mother said I made my theatrical debut in the maternity ward, when she heard that stentorian yowl,” Takei said.

The actor has been at the forefront of the marriage equality debate. He’s been legally married to his husband, Brad, for the past four years and they’ve been together for 25.

The 75-year-old has a loyal following on social networks, which he credits to his mixing posts with humor, visuals and education; with nearly three million followers on Facebook and Twitter combined, it’s a winning combination.

“My base initially was the geeks and nerds, you know, the sci-fi fans. I find that I get a lot of likes when I do amusing things, tell jokes or when I put on pictures of kittens, so I found a formula,” he said.

Takei is now taking his family’s story to Broadway.

“Allegiance” the musical documents his family’s time in internment camps in the U.S. during WWII.

“It’s going to be my legacy project, to do ‘Allegiance’ and tell our story on Broadway, and that’s the most important stage in America,” Takei said.

The musical premiered in September at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego. It’s expected to make its Broadway debut later next year.
