Так как в последнее время я увлекся переводами песен the pillows, то решил перевести и комментарии к альбому PIED PIPER. Всегда интересно узнать, как создавались композиции, и что о них думает автор.

-PIED PIPER

Это заглавный трек альбома. Название “Pied Piper” произошло от легенды “Гаммельнский крысолов”(“The Piped Piper of Hamelin”). Эта история произошла много лет назад: все, кто нарушил обещание, последовали за волшебной флейтой… Так вот я хотел, чтобы название означало, что я хочу повести людей в лучший мир с помощью своей рок’н’ролл музыки! В этом альбоме есть и рок’н’ролл, и альтернатив… но в нем также есть и привкус поп-музыки!

-NEW ANIMAL

Когда было написано вступление, я уже знал, что эта песня станет потрясной! Тема композиции – “Делать по-своему”.

-NO SURRENDER

Это редкая композиция, где поется “Я заберу тебя из этого испорченного мира”. Мне просто хотелось это сказать. Не могу дождаться, когда спою это на концерте!

-LAST HOLIDAY

Я написал эту песню в Осаке во время японского тура и затем спел всего один куплет. Это грустная песня о любви. “Когда мир гибнет, придешь ли ты меня увидеть?” Это был первый раз, когда мы играли живьем с виолончелью, и это было так в новинку!

-TOKYO ZOMBI

Это инструментальная композиция. 2 гитары/барабаны/бас играют сами по себе, и выходит интересное звучание. Аранжировка была совершенна… Изначально название было шуткой над TOKYO BAMBI, но потом шутка помогла найти нужное звучание.

-ACROSS THE METROPOLIS

Это самый старый трек в альбоме. Кажется мы записали демо без слов 3 года назад… Мр. Манабе сыграл ее и, вообщем-то, все. Она так и осталась в том оригинальном виде. А моя гитара играет на октаву ниже его гитары. Это ведь “Альтернативная музыка”.

-PURPLE APPLE

Это трек в стиле “the pillows”, как и PIED PIPER; “Слабая альтернативная песня”. Но это еще и рок’н’ролл, и смысл песни – это припев от DOHATSUTEN!

-TOKYO BAMBI

Песня вышла синглом, но я решил, что она будет лучше смотреться на альбоме. Трубы в стиле японской ска-группы “TOKYO SKA PARADISE ORCHESTRA” засчитывают трек в “альтернативный фанк”! I was kind of worried that this track might stand out in the album but the horn made the guitar shined it out!

-LADYBIRD GIRL

Это избитая песня о любви, которую может понять каждый. Я написал ее в Лос-Анджелесе во время последнего тура в США. Я думал она получится более американской, но она вышла как раз в стиле “the pillows”… lol

-THAT’S WONDERFUL WORLD

Это песня для испонителя “HERMIT”, который выпускается на моем лейбле DELICIOUS LABEL. Он стал моим лучшим другом, когда мне было 13, и это он научил меня року. Когда мы впервые приехали в Токио, мы жили в одной комнате. Мы были молоды, глупы и полны рок’н’ролла… это было потрясающе!

-POISON ROCK’N'ROLL

Эта песня была написана во время записи, мы немного порепетировали и сразу же ее записали. Я могу совершать поступки, которые легко заденут мою гордость, но не других членов группы. Я всего лишь лицемер. Я пою “Я решил взять всех” но в то же время я имею ввиду, “Я никого не беру, кроме тебя (я же лицемер)!” Это всего лишь посредственная рок’н’ролл песня. Надеюсь, вы понимаете мои чувства…

Итого, в альбоме 11 песен, но всего 40 минут длительности. Гитарный звук просто великолепный, и я так этому рад… не могу дождаться тура!!!…”

I’ve always enjoyed collaborations between Japanese and foreign artists.  Today I came across “Lightning Runaway” by the pillows and Texan rocker Ben Kweller. The single was made to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Tower Records in Japan.  The one-track single is available now, but only at Tower Records.

Welcome back to the second part of October release madness.  The last column was actually the most viewed J-Rock Fridays column so far (but still no comments).  I will probably continue featuring upcoming releases in future columns, but try not to be so obvious about it.  While I’m here, I would like to thank indiesmusic.com for being an excellent source for upcoming release information and music videos.

The Mirraz- “check it out!check it out!check it out!check it out!”

This is a rather low-budget video, likely made by the band themselves, parodying the local news.  It probably wouldn’t work if the song wasn’t so catchy.  They remind me of a punker version of BACK-ON.  The second album Necessary Evil came out this week and it’s a lot of fun.

riddim saunter- “Sweet & Still”

Anyone remember when this band had crazy synthesizers and punk rock choruses? Yeah, they’re way mellow now.  They decided flutes and violins better fit their style.  This is a rather pleasant, chill song and a humorous video.  I love how the lead singer runs around town with a “FUCK YEAH” t-shirt.  Their third album Days Lead comes out next week.

serial TV drama- “Space Opera”

With the liberal use of the word “Oi!” and epic guitar solos, serial TV drama is bound to be the next act to climb out of the indie scene.  Another good band from UK.PROJECT, who gave us BIGMAMA, the telephones, Karen, Vola & The Oriental Machine, and Ogre You Asshole.

I wasn’t a fan of the first single off Ooparts “Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi,” but “Your Order” fit the bill.  This is another stop-motion animated PV from the band.  Some pretty abstract stuff here, but a fun video.

Starboard- “ワールド・サーフ”

This is a neat video.  It reminds me of avenger’s in sci-fi’s PV for “Homosapiens Experience” with the band playing in triangle formation and green-screened cool stuff in the background.

Local Sound Style- “Carry On”

“Carry On” is the first single from Local Sound Style’s second album Hope due out the end of the month.  It’s your standard performance video with epic zooms of the band members and headlights randomly going off in the background.  There’s plenty of pop-punk bands that sing in English in Japan, but LSS is a step above the rest.  They list The Get Up Kids and Jimmy Eat World as influences.

Now this is a more fascinating performance video.  It starts off more artistic but just ends with a party.  This is off their debut mini-album parade due out later this month from UK.PROJECT.

The Pillows live at the Budokan

The Pillows are an alternative Japanese rock band with a bit of an indie feel. Formed in 1989 they’ve released more than a dozen original studio albums, but are best known internationally for the soundtrack of the anime FLCL. To me the Pillows don’t sound particularly “Japanese”, and they certainly don’t have the sugary sweet and overproduced sound associated with J-Pop.

Unfortunately since their official website is mainly in Japanese so I couldn’t get much out of it. However I did learn that the band’s new album, OOPARTS ,  is scheduled to launch on the 14th of this month. You can listen to samples of the songs online, which would be pretty exciting if it was actually possible to buy it here.

If anyone out there is familiar with The Pillows and knows more about music than I do, which is really not hard, I’m curious about the proper terms to describe their sound. I’d use just one: excellent. Go check them out.

“There’s nothing amazing here, just the norm”

I first heard that quote from Ta-kun from FLCL. I just watched the first episode even though I have all the episodes. I think It’s a great anime but I still do not have the time to watch it.

I’ve been a little depressed lately but I don’t know the reason why, there’s just a lot of mixed feelings that’s difficult to understand. Thinking about that quote made me think that there’s nothing amazing happening to me or around me, just the norm. I do not have anything amazing that I want to do, sometimes I want to scold or blame myself because of the simple-minded person that I am. Having these thoughts gives an aching feeling inside me. In the end, I’m just making myself confused.

I am currently listening to the song of “The Pillows” entitled “One Life”. I heard this song in the first episode of FLCL. I really like the lyrics of this song, especially this

No matter what kind of shoes I wear, if I walk, I leave footprints

Everyday I try to live my life as easy and comfortable as I can (hindi naman nangyayri T_T) and at the same time put up with all the responsibilities I gave to myself. I’m still struggling, doing what I can while I’m still here. Even though in my life, the things that I do are just small, I still want to think that I am leaving footprints behind even though small they’re still there, just like other people in this vast shore. Even if the time comes that my footprints stopped, I know that I left my mark, my life.

O the pillows é uma banda veterana de rock que faz muito sucesso no Japão. Formada pelo guitarrista Manabe, pelo baterista Sato e pelo vocalista Yamanaka, a banda está comemorando este ano o seu 20º aniversário.

Dando início a sua comemoração de 20 anos, o the pillows está lançando neste dia 2 de setembro o seu vigésimo nono single: “Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi”. O single virá com apenas duas faixas: a faixa-título e uma b-side chamada “Fighting Pause”. Na versão limitada do single contém um DVD com o PV de “Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi”.

O the pillows tem outro lançamento para o dia 2 de setembro. Trata-se de um single exclussivo chamado “Lightning Runaway ~NO MUSIC, NO LIFE~” que conta com a participação do cantor e compositor americano Ben Kweller. Porém, este single só poderá ser comprado em alguma loja da Tower Records. Todas as pessoas que comprarem ambos os singles em algumas das lojas da Tower Records recebera como presente um encarte especial da banda.

E a comemoração de 20 anos da banda não para! Amanhã, dia 3 de setembro, sairá o resultado do consurso mundial “the pillows COPY BAND EVENT—“ROAD TO BUDOUKAN”—”. Este concurso foi patrocinado pela Avex Trax junto com o Youtube e nele os concorrentes deveriam gravar uma cover de uma das músicas do the pillows e depois posta-lo no Youtube. Quem vencer será convidado a participar do show da banda no Nippon Budokan no dia 16 de setembro. Além de conhecer pessoalmente o the pillows, quem vencer terá o seu vídeo transmitido no evento. Bom, não foi lançado nenhum PV para a música “Lightning Runaway ~NO MUSIC, NO LIFE~”, apenas para “Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi”. Achei ele bem simples e a música bem “mais ou menos”. Não me chamou muito a atenção! Minha nota é 2/5.

Hace unos 3 años the pillows dió dos conciertos en la ciudad de México. Recuerdo que no habíamos planeado ir a la segunda fecha pero minutos antes de comenzar el concierto decidimos ir. Llegamos casi a la mitad del concierto y el setlist parecía ser igual al del día anterior, pero una enorme emoción me invadió cuando empecé a escuchar Funny Bunny.

Juro que estuve a punto de llorar, y nuevamente estuve a punto de llorar cuando me enteré de que este 2009, the pillows lanzaba ésta canción como sencillo de uno de los discos recopilatorios que sacaron celebrando su 20 aniversario. La canción es ligeramente diferente a la original pero vale la pena, además hicieron un PV que por obvias razones veo casi todos los días.

Como sea, me sentí obligada a poner la letra de la canción con su respectiva traducción.

Tokyo Zombie: keeping Japan’s offbeat fascination with the undead ‘alive’, this black comedy is tagged as ‘Japan’s Shaun of the Dead’. Basically, it’s a movie of two halves; the first of which is pretty funny, dark, entertaining and has some top comedy violence. The second half is boring and full of poor drama, with the last 15 minutes perking up again. In true Japanese style weird, irrelevant and perverse subjects crop up throughout, and it’s got a similar look and feel to the ‘Happiness of the Katakuris’. There’s a few glimmers of good acting through the ridiculous scenes, a couple of great long takes, and a few awesome J-punk riffs in the soundtrack. Because it peeks too early I’d  check this out if you were in to your Japanese films already, but wouldn’t use this as an introduction to Asian cinema.

Score: 5.5/10

You either know about Japanese music or you don’t, but either way I’m sure a majority of you have heard of the pillows. They are Japanese band that has a history of performing here in America. This time they are expanding their horizons and inviting you to spend a night with them!

Celebrating their 20th anniversary, Japanese rock band “the pillows” is now holding a cover contest on YouTube.com. This contest is accepting submission worldwide.

the pillows is known for singing the theme and featured songs of the acclaimed Japanese animation “FLCL.”

5 pairs (10 persons) for the Semi Grand Prize winners category will be invited to the Nippon Budokan Live held on the pillows’ anniversary date of September 16, 2009, with a contribution of round-trip airfare. On addition to this, 1 pair (2 persons of the Grand Prize winners category will be invited to the backstage after their performance for a “meet & greet”!

1) Nationality/age/gender is unregarded. Anyone can apply.
