To celebrate the 3rd birthday of Converse Music, I was asked to create a 48-page book for Converse. Presented in a 12 inch sleeve, to replicate the look of an old vinyl, the book highlighted the pick of the promotional activity undertaken by Converse, including sponsorship of the Underage Festival, Field Day, Somerset House Summer Series and their own series of gigs, featuring The Rakes, Good Shoes and The Foals.

And on the technical side of things…, the book is perfect bound, with a matt laminated front cover with a Spot UV logo print.

The video for Alice’s forthcoming single ‘Let Us Be Loving’ has finally seen the light of day. And we’re glad that it did! Directed by Brighton-based photographer and film-maker Steve Glashier (who has previously created music promos for the likes of Fatboy Slim, Juliette and the Licks and The Rakes), the video was shot entirely with a Canon 5D mkII (for those photography buffs amongst you).

Alice embarks on a short UK tour (once she returns from the European tour of course) during November. Check out her MySpace for details.

the Rakes Progress No More

They call it the toilet circuit. From Southampton Joiners to Glasgow King Tuts, these intimate and legendary venues are the bedrock of British music, daring any band with a couple of chords and a swagger of self-belief to pass through its musical sewer system. The gigging equivalent of the marine training camp in Full Metal Jacket, if your band has done its dues at the likes of Leicester Princess Charlotte and Newport TJ’s they’ll be fully prepared for all the perils of the music industry: the onslaught of a jaded music journalist or even an inappropriate support slot with the Feeling.

Of course, few make the grade, but of the bands that do always be suspicious when you hear their fond memories of “those slender times that made us the band we are”; chances are they’re saying it while chugging away at a bottle of Moët and whiling away the hours before stage-time in a dressing room the size of Coventry Cathedral.

Full marks then to urban perennials the Rakes, who having finished recording their third album Klang (released on 23 March) in Berlin have dived gleefully head-first back in to the cavernous cellars and Public House back-rooms of the UK and are seemingly revelling in the experience.

“Oh yeah, it’s certainly an experience being back” remarks Alan Donohoe, the Rakes debonair singer, as he casts his eyes around the walls of Cardiff Barfly’s tiny dressing room. “Have you seen the graffiti in here? It’s amazing.” He points to the back of the dressing room door, where a previous bored guitarist or drummer has taken the toilet circuit analogy one step further and scrawled in large black marker three words: Dirty Shitty Things. “It’s everywhere in here. Maybe it’s a specific Cardiff Barfly thing that you have to leave toilet humour versions of band names on the walls? Nine Inch Stains is especially good. The only thing is we’re having trouble thinking of one for us. Maybe we’re so un-risky we can’t think of any toilet humour nicknames for our band? We’re not that clever.”

Amusingly, Alan says those last few words while still holding the Salman Rushdie hardback he’s been reading. Still, just to ensure there’s no danger of such inane toilet humour being a benchmark for musical success, guitarist Matt Swinnerton settles the matter. “Actually I shouldn’t worry. It’s obviously not a band’s privilege to come up with your own toilet humour nickname – it probably has to be bestowed on you by others.”

Later on in a Cardiff drinking hole Alan and Matt mull over their short return to such intimate places – the Rakes will play much larger venues in April – and getting back within spitting distance of their fans. “There’s a great energy from being eyeball to eyeball with everyone, not knowing if there’s going to be a stage invasion or not,” enthuses Alan. “Other than that, yeah, it’s been quite nice to play places we haven’t been much before, like Derby and Darlington.”

Have the Rakes noticed any changes at the venues this time round? “Well, we have hoummos in our dressing room now,” confirms an obviously-pleased Matt. “It’s a luxury in a way – when we first started it would have been some warm beer and a packet of crisps.”

Of course the real reason for the tour is not just a nostalgia trip down memory-gig lane but to gear up for the full tour in April (ending at Koko in London on 29 April) in support of Klang, the Rakes’ third album, and their first recorded outside the UK, specifically in Berlin. Far more urgent and severe than previous outing Ten New Messages, Klang sees the Rakes return to the angular immediacy of their first album, Capture/Release. Somewhat inspired by Bowie’s own relocation to Berlin in the mid 70s the Rakes have upped the jagged swagger of their sound, taking in nods to Iggy Pop and Public Image along the way, all delivered against Alan’s measured and sharp, social observations.

The Rakes have always been drawn to the history and culture of Germany (take the lyrics for Strasbourg for instance: “Eins, zwei, drei, vier / Ideas can change the government / But they never listen to our arguments / On TV our friends smashed cement / And pulled down the bastards’ monuments”), was there really going to be anywhere else they were going to decamp to?

“We’ve always hung out in Berlin when we’ve passed through, hanging out in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg,” says Alan. “There’s just something special about Berlin, especially in the eastern part where we were recording. Everything seems so dimly lit, like the whole city is in a film noir.”

Like Bowie and Iggy in the seventies, Klang feels like it soaked up the ambience of its birthplace, particularly first single, 1989, which perfectly captures the sights, sounds and smells of east Berlin (“Spent the night in Friedrichshain / Where the bars were full in the summertime / Punks were hanging out in the park / Whilst someone practiced electric guitar”).

Recorded in a colossal studio compound called the Funkhaus (the German ‘funk’ translates as ‘radio’) with Les Savy Fav producer Chris Zane, Klang is definitely the Rakes most adventurous album yet, although it’s still very much grounded in their familiar and potent blend of new-wave. Alan agrees. “We wanted to get a bit more experimental and not rely on verse-chorus-verse for the album. So the studio was perfect for that. It has this very long history associated with the GDR, the East German Government, and Erich Honecker, and was used by the GDR to broadcast propaganda. It’s a very imposing place with all these countless rooms and corridors, and yeah, it really allowed us to do what we wanted.”

In light of some of the (unfair) criticism it received, the Rakes last album could have been titled Ten Mixed Messages. With Klang, the Rakes have succeeded in pinning down the promise of Capture/Release – the jostling, angular infection of Rakes’ classics like 22 Grand Job and Strasbourg is very much evident on That’s the Reason and Shackleton in particular – and have emerged from their Berlin experience as imposing as the studio monolith they left behind; leaner, more determined, yet still with that unique and absorbing, affable attribute that sets them apart from so many guitar bands destined to fill the toilet circuit for years to come.

Footnote: On 22 October 2009 the Rakes announced that the band would split with immediate effect, posting a statement on their website: ”The Rakes have always been very adamant and proud of the fact that we give 100% to every gig we’ve ever played. If we can’t give it everything then we won’t do it. That was the rule we set ourselves from day one.”

Klang went on to receive some of the best reviews of the the Rakes’ career, including 4 stars in the Guardian and it still remains one of my favourite records this year. Whilst never a band to strike the world on fire, I’m going to miss the itchy, tearing 3 minute songs, stories about mundane life and escapism and Alan Donahue’s loveable, irreverent wit.

Farewell the Rakes. Good luck with the 22 grand job. It’s alright x

Essa foi a regra que estabelecemos desde o primeiro dia. Após muita deliberação, chegamos conjuntamente à conclusão de que não podemos nos dar 100 por cento mais e lamentamos anunciar que o The Rakes está encerrando o expediente. Escrever nosso próprio obtuário é algo surreal de se fazer, mas queremos agradecer particularmente nossos tão amados fãs, todas as ótimas pessoas com quem trabalhamos todos esses anos, nossa assessoria e nossa fiel gravadora. Nos sentimos privilegiados de ter tido a oportunidade de escrever música juntos e tocar pelo mundo. De verdade, obrigado pelos bons tempos… foi uma ótima festa! Hoje em dia é com a mesma facilidade que as bandas se formam, ficam famosas, e se separam. Já são raras as bandas com 10 anos de estrada, quanto mais uma banda como os Rolling Stones, que passou por vários momentos históricos e musicas sempre unida e produzindo. Reflexos da pós-modernidade.

The last thing I would think on any band’s mind when they have a new release out is to break up. I dunno, bands have their reasons I suppose, but it was a bitter sweet discovery I found with “That’s The Reason” off their latest album release Klang. I was just getting into this band after they have been around for what seems eternity. That in itself is an odd thing, because I thought this band were to hip for me to like, and I’m never hip. I’m the daggiest South American / Italian / Australian you’ll ever know with the horrendous haircut in the world.

In fear of me getting off on the insanity bend here, I will now only simply say to enjoy this racey, upbeat track as it will be the last Rakes track you will hear (unless of course they get a nostalgic fanbase who never realised the band’s potential and hence reform in ten years).

Gli americani direbbero che le loro canzoni sono “very catchy”, ossia molto accattivanti, quasi insidiose. Perché ti entrano in testa e soprattutto perché ti obbligano a non stare fermo. I Thank You For The Drum Machine (T.Y.F.T.D.M.) arrivano da Arezzo e non a caso, visto che ultimamente la Toscana sembra essere regione assai prolifica dal punto di vista della proposta di nuove band targate made in Italy.
Il loro disco di esordio è uscito lo scorso 8 maggio per la Live Global e si intitola “New Adventures On Analog Machines”. Mescola sonorità alternative rock (stile The Wombats e Klaxons) a elementi di musica elettronica (Daft Punk e Soulwax), con il risultato di mettere sul piatto canzoni ottimamente riuscite come Back To Rock, Make It Right, I Like Chicks, I Feel *So* Better, vere e proprie tracce da dancefloor (fra l’altro testate dal sottoscritto con grande successo).
A riconoscimento di tutto questo, la band aretina ha supportato gli inglesi The Rakes nel loro tour per l’Italia, confermandosi molto apprezzabile anche sul versante della performance live, dove risaltano tute da ginnastica rosso fuoco, occhiali da sole sul naso, batterista energico all’occorrenza cantante e voce indie del frontman. I Rakes hanno decisamente portato fortuna ai T.Y.F.T.D.M., questi ultimi non possono però dire altrettanto dei corrispettivi britannici. Purtroppo è notizia di pochi giorni fa (l’ha riportata Nme.com qui): il gruppo capitanato da Alan Donohoe ha scelto la strada dello scioglimento, cancellando parte del suo Uk Tour e quello americano per intero.
Nessun problema. I T.Y.F.T.D.M. ora sanno camminare da soli. Venerdì 23 Ottobre saranno all’Arteria di Bologna.

The Rakes have officially announced they are parting ways:

There goes another one.

Both their upcoming UK and US tours have been canceled, which makes not buying a ticket to their show at Subterranean in a few weeks look like a smart move on my part after all. Still, it stings. Just two weeks ago I had “The World Was a Mess But His Hair Was Perfect” stuck in my head, crazy since I hadn’t listened to it in years. But it will always be one of the greatest song titles ever and a great song. I’m partial to the 18 minute epic version, but the shorter single is good too:

The Rakes split up today. They were a very good band who made an incredible debut album and were a hell of a lot of fun to watch live. They will be missed.

2004-2009

Part of the post-punk art rock scene which emerged in the middle of the decade, with bands such as  Bloc Party, Maxïmo Park, and Art Brut, no other band around could produce a tune that would make you want to dance more than The Rakes.

I first saw them when they were supporting Franz Ferdinand at Alexandra Palace in 2005. It’s very rare for me to enjoy a support act I’d never heard before, but I was sucked in straight away. The captivating bass hooks, the jagged guitar riffs, Alan’s vocals which ranged from deep singing to high-pitched whining, and his Ian Curtis dance moves. It all drew me in, by the time they were playing “We Are All Animals” I realised this was be a band I wanted to see again.

Capture/Release is an amazing album, easily one of the greatest albums released this decade. I think it came along at just the right time for me, with its songs about office life in the City, just months after I started working in an office. But it was more than that, the music was just so good, and they continued with the incredible 17-minute “The World Was A Mess, But His Hair Was Perfect”, originally recorded for a Dior Homme fashion show. The second album, Ten New Messages, could never live up to the debut, but was still a great listen with some really good tracks. The third, Klang, released earlier this year, is an album I’ve not quite been able to get into, but there are still some gems in there.

They were one of those bands where the rule seemed to be: the smaller the venue, the better the gig will be. When they were good, they were amazing, in particular I remember seeing them at the now-closed London Astoria, with an air of euphoria in the crowd as we all danced along to a band in the form of their lives. I’ve kept in touch with a few Rakes fans I’ve met at gigs, I don’t think that’s happened with any other band I’ve seen.

But now, it’s sadly all over. This afternoon the band released this statement:

The saddest thing about this is that I am not that bothered. Nor am I that shocked either, as I occasionally check this blog’s Google stats, and someone on Monday clicked on this blog after searching for “the rakes split up”. Maybe they knew something that we didn’t.

Anyway, their first album, Capture/Release, is still excellent in my opinion. The first few songs are solid gold stuff, and the rest often reaches those heights again as well. The follow up albums haven’t been as good though, with Ten New Messages being patchy and Klang so uninteresting to me that I don’t think I’ve managed to get through the whole album without getting bored and turning it off. This is really sad, given the excellent of the first album and my love for it. They were an excellent live band too, but again the first album’s songs were so much better than the majority of their other output so when touring new material they weren’t as good.

It seems then that I was lucky to have seen them last month supporting Young Knives, as they didn’t even last another month and it was the last chance I had to see them play. I was doubly lucky as they played mostly old stuff. I felt then that they must know how poor in comparison their recent material was, and perhaps it’s that knowledge that made them decide to stop. Or maybe them not putting 100% in resulted in half-hearted albums. Hopefully they’ll get up to some new music stuff individually in the future. I reckon Alan could possibly have a decent solo career, he’s a good front man so maybe another band would be good. Or maybe they’ll all go get jobs in the city. Ones that are alright. I won’t bother speculating as to how much they’d get paid.

But there you go, the Rakes are dead. Thanks to them, some fun times were had, so thanks guys.

I The Rakes si sono sciolti!
Lo so che è brutto mettere la “i” davanti a “the”, ma suona male anche scrivere soltanto “The Rakes si sono sciolti”. E vabbè, potrei costruire la frase in un altro modo, ma il concetto resta lo stesso.
Come si può leggere sul loro sito oggi ESSI hanno annunciato la fine della loro carriera.
E se penso ai loro ultimi due album la cosa mi lascia completamente indifferente.
Mi spiace invece se penso a Capture/Release che era un album promettente, a “The world was a mess but his hair was perfect” (la versione per Dior) e ai suoi 18 minuti.
Mi spiace anche se penso a quando li avevo sentiti dal vivo prima dei Franz Ferdinand e non avevano sfigurato per niente.
Mi spiace soprattutto perchè Alan Donohoe era è un ballerino fenomenale!!

Si es que hay una sección que no me gusta de mi blog, eso seria cuando tengo que escribir sobre una mala noticias, y mas aun cuando el titulo del post empieza con “This Is The End Of…”, y lamentablemente esta vez les toco el turno a los Inglesitos The Rakes, que según dicen sienten que ya no pueden dar su 100% en los escenarios y que ya no se sienten tan cómodos como antes, aunque seguramente la verdad es que no vendieron tantos disco como esperaban y eso seguramente habrá influido en su decisión, pero bueno lo hecho hecho esta, así que vamos a recordarlos con una de sus mejores canciones…

Un showroom de moda y tendencias, aderazado con  la presentación de algunas publicaciones y removido con  actuaciones musicales en directo. Esa era la propuesta del Daisy Market en Coruña, una iniciativa en la que por estas lindes estamos aún muy verdes. Todo se andará. En un claro del bosque de gafas de pasta actuaba Extraperlo. El debut de los de Barna (Desayuno Continental, Mushroom Pillow 2009) no deja indiferente a nadie, como tantas veces pasa en este país avocado a los extremos. Bizcos y mestizos, con un ojo en Golpes Bajos (la manera de cantar del vocalista obliga) y otro en los rítmos calidos de ámbos trópicos (decimos Vampire Weekend porque parece que no había música pop anglosajona con influencia africana antes de los neoyorquinos), Extraperlo suenan bien, resultan frescos y tienen muy buenas canciones (Bañadores, Las Palmeras del Amor, Cavalcade…). Así que poco más hay que pedir. Tras un concierto correcto, con la gente sentanda en mesas de jardín (lo que recordaba en cierto modo a los playbacks de Lúar o Top of The Pops pero en trendy) se dejaron ver con uno de los guitarristas de otro combo más que recomendable, Disco Las Palmeras. Con el cambio de tercio al escenario grande llego el turno de La Bien Querida. El Romancero (Elefant Records, 2009) de la bilbotarra es notable a ratos (hasta que se hace cansino y empiezas a sentirte atrapado en una película de Coixet) , pero verla cantar, enfundada en su estola de leopardo mientras recita los textos ayudada por un atríl y más seca que la mojama pues… Súmenle el sonido del recinto junto al público escaso y el espacio desangelado y tendrán como resultado una actuación intrascendente. Vamos, que podían haber puesto el disco por megafonía y todos contentos. Algo similar sucedió con The Wave Pictures. Los ingleses, triunfantes apenas hace unos meses con su directo en la Fundación Caixa Galicia,  se perdieron en la inmensidad del espacio. Es irrelevante citar las influencias de Hefner o Violent Femmes o el humor irónico de sus letras cuando carecieron de una de sus máximas virtudes: la proximidad. Conscientes de su papel de cierre y estrella del cartel, The Rakes, pusieron empeño y voluntad. Y aunque solo fuera por una cuestión de número, llenaron el escenario. Los londinenses andan siempre vinculados al modeleo y quizá por eso se sintieron más a gusto que el resto de las bandas en el Daisy Market. Como banda han evolucionado desde los matices punk y guarros del Capture/Release que los aúpo a primera fila a los descorazonadores Ten New Messages y Klang, donde andan un poco perdidos como queriendo ser The Strokes cuando estos ya están olvidados. Esto no es óbice para que podamos disfrutar de buenos temas y una actitud correcta y aseada en el directo.  La sarcástica The World is a mess but his hair was perfect, 22 Grand Job o los hits Retreat y We dance together, junto a mi favoritas Trouble y When Tom Cruise Cries fueron lo más salvable del evento al completo.

Este sábado estuvimos en LaCoru y nos acercamos hasta el Daisy Market. Pasamos una tardenoche entretenida; pero la verdad es que el evento me dejó un sabor de boca un tanto agridulce. Me pareció que con los medios que tenían y el nivel de la moda (ya no sólo a nivel gallego,sino)español, le faltaba algo. Había numerosos expositores; pero poca afluencia de público; o esa fue la impresión que me dio debido a la forma en la que estaban organizados los stands: demasiado lejos unos de otros, algunos de cara a la pared donde casi ni se les veía…etc. Sí me dio la impresión de que éramos más en los conciertos, aunque quizás fuese porque estábamos más juntos, no se. La elección de los grupos me pareció acertada, para todos los gustos, nacionales e internacionales y repartidos en 2 días. Quizás esa fue la baza que supieron jugar para llamar a más gente (creo que muchos íbamos a los conciertos y de paso, nos acercamos a ver de qué iba eso de la feria). El precio de las bebidas también el normal, el que estamos acostumbrados a pagar cuando salimos por ahí de marcha (que por otra parte, suele ser raro en festivales).
Mis dos stands favoritos ( y ya digo de antemano que todo lo que hice fue darme una vuelta rápida por todos, sin pararme mucho a ver las prendas ya que preferia tomarme una caña y estar con los míos mientras escuchaba a Extraperlo y así de paso, evitar darme ningún caprichito) fueron el de Diksi y el de 8008-D, más por el contenido que por el continente, ya que todos los stands eran bien parecidos.
Lo que sí destaco es la zona de picnic y los sofás que había entre “la pasarela” que llevaba a los stands, me pareció que estaba bien organizado y sobretodo me gustó la decoración.

En fin, que ojalá el año que viene vuelvan a hacer el Daisy Market y tengan en cuenta algunos pequeños detalles que pueden hacer, según mi opinión, que la feria crezca y se consolide como un referente como ha sido la BBB, por ejemplo.

Este fin de semana se celebra en Expocoruña el Daisy Market, un showroom donde además de contenidos relacionados con la moda habrá un jugoso cartel musical. Estaré cubriéndolo, muy pendiente de la actuación de Extraperlo, que desde que los vi en el Festival do Norte me han convertido en fan y de la de The Rakes, una de estas bandas a la que a base de escuchar sus temas les coges aprecio. El lunes habrá cumplida reseña del evento. En la parte superior, un video muy fresco de los barceloneses.
