Well there was some, but not much, chat about Jane Austen in the session, Three very attractive men

Well there was some, but not much, chat about Jane Austen in the session, Three very attractive men talk sensitively about Jane Austen, hosted by columnist Mark Dapin and featuring two of Australia’s most prominent authors: Tom Keneally, and Rob Drewe. Actually between Dapin’s tattoed biceps, the twinkle in Keneally’s eye and the merry sparring humour between the three men, there was a lot to be attracted to, writes Richelle Buckingham*.
Both Keneally and Drewe talked about their working day, both admitting to early morning procrastination – several newspapers, and cryptic crosswords later, the serious business of writing would (hopefully) ensue. At 73, Keneally chuckled that he was very much ‘…seduced by the cryptic crossword and girls with walking frames.’
The authors also talked about the inherent loneliness of the writer; as Keneally says, ‘…the solitude of writing can be a problem in magnifying depression.’ But Drewe and Keneally both agree the accomplishment is worth it. With that twinkle in his eye, and that whiskery gnome like appearance that wouldn’t be out of place, fishing rod in hand, beside your garden pond, Keneally pointed out that the festival audience gives you the kind of illusion that they have all read your book – and you could tell that Keneally and Drewe relished every moment of it.
The talk went on to ‘prose’, what type did the author’s prefer? The shared opinion was, less is more, although a variation of light and heavy can be good. But as Drewe said, ‘Let the verbs do the work …too many adjectives, too flowery.’
Keneally, with Schindler’s Ark (List) and The Chant of Jimmy BlackSmith, and Drewe, with Our Sunshine (aka Ned Kelly) and Shark Net, have seen their work successfully adapted for the screen. And as proud as the authors are of this accomplishment, they also sagely advise not to be too precious about the adaptation. As Keneally says, ‘The director looks at your book as a point of departure not as the bible!’

Well there was some discussion of Jane Austen, unlike any other discussion ever of Jane Austen, adds Marian Edmunds.
Tom Keneally said Jane Austen is a genius but she “annoys the hell out of him”. Where are the servants? Where are the philanthropists, Where are the Jacobites?.
Keneally’s take on the action in Jane Austen novels, “I must say, Ms Whatever, I find your company exquisitely stimulating and I would like to further our acquaintance, instead of saying,” he said, “how about it love?”
“So if you look at other writers Tolstoy – Dostoevsky, they had the servants, and Rob’s (Drewe) great work Shark Net had a serial killer,” said Kenneally. Jane Austen should be sauced up with a serial killer too, he said.
By which time the audience was in fits of laughter.
“You get the impression that the British Empire was just there to allow these silly girls to tremble around the drawing room and say, ‘Oh Mr So and So’s come,” said Kenneally.
“A nice woman in the line waiting for coffee – who was a Jane Austen expert, unlike me, told me Jane was aware of the possibility of sour and bitter marriages,” said Keneally. “The way she places marriage as the the great God of the millenium is a little like the Bolsheviks looking on the October revolution as the coming of the millennium and what did they get?” he said.
“Stalin. And half the girls in the book who are yearning for marriage, they get Stalin too,” said Keneally. “There a few controversial remarks on Jane Austen, and i know “‘ll be flogged for them,” he said.
But there was no flogging in evidence, just roars of laughter. And Keneally was not done yet.
He spoke of the Merchant Ivory movies where “people turn up a grand country houses and you see a bloke leading a horse away – and i think why didn’t they make a movie on that bloke. What are his yearnings and aspirations?”
“That’s what annoys me a bit about Jane even though she is a genius,” said Keneally.
Rob Drewe has never read a Jane Austen novel but said he’s got a “nine-year-old daughter who’s obsessed with Jane Austen or what you see on TV and the movies, and following that she’s obsessed with Colin Firth’s wet shirt.”
Keneally interjects: “As the nice woman in the coffee line said, ‘that’s as close as anything gets to wet’” in the works of Austen.
“It doesn’t get any more sensitive than this,” said Dapin wrapping up.

Thomas Keneally’s latest book is ‘The People’s Train’ – fighting the Russian Revolution from Melbourne. Rob Drewe has released another collection of short stories The Rip; and Mark Dapin, has published three non-fiction books, and has his first novel coming out later this year.

Being on a sick leave from work leaves you with a lot of time on your hands for blogging incessantly

Being on a sick leave from work leaves you with a lot of time on your hands for blogging incessantly about vapid mens fashion stuff, catching up with Howard Stern + the Wrap-up Show, intensive outpatient therapy and of course, watching Youtube clips like this one:

Yeah, I like seeing a kid getting hit in the head with a shovel or replaying Shoes over and over (how clever of Weezer to put Liam and Chris Crocker in their Pork and Beans video, eh?).

But instead of being all jokey, cynical, schticky or cheeky this time, I’m going to lay low tonight. Nothing really to do with men’s fashion or style. Nothing to do with carnage. Nothing to do with racial slurs or outfits or shoes or my renovations or slow motion replays of that Black Friday shopper’s wig falling off during a stampede.

I’d thought I’d share 11 videos that I’ve been enjoying currently. Nothing ironic about that.

Thom Yorke covers Portishead’s The Rip, one of the best songs they’ve ever written..

A R Rahman’s Oscar-nominated song for Danny Boyle’s AMAZING film, Slumdog Millionaire. I have been a huge A R Rahman fan for over 10 years now so it’s nice to see him get some mainstream recognition. Ever since I saw this movie last year, I’ve been playing this song at least once a day. I know 60% of the lyrics..

Spoiler alert: end credits dance sequence!

My favourite Ray Charles song, covered by John Legend at the end of Curb Your Enthusiasm (one of my favourite shows of all time)..

Spoiler alert!

Royksopp featuring the singer from The Knife. A beautiful video and a haunting song that I replay over and over..

Springsteen’s song for Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. Mickey called The Boss up and asked him to do a song. And what a song. Springsteen was completely snubbed by the Academy.

An acoustic version of my favourite song from The National, Slow Show.

Before it became a revamped CSI theme song, it was my favourite Who song of all time. And still up there in my top 10 favourite songs of all time..

My favourite song from genius producer, Nitin Sawhney (one of Paul McCartney’s favourites). We are free to be free…

I had NO idea he played Luminato Festival in Toronto last year. I would’ve went for sure had I known. But I went and saw him at Revival and danced my ass off. He mostly played East Indian drum & bass but also combined it with a live PA set with an incredible singer. I think Alex and I were the only non-Indian people there who knew who he was. I also got to meet Talvin Singh not too long ago.

Talvin Singh, another genius. Here with Bjork performing Big Time Sensuality.

Speaking of Bjork, Innocence produced by Timabland makes my seat wet..

Never thought I’d get into Arcade Fire until I read their Time Magazine article and happened to catch their amazing SNL performance of Intervention. All of a sudden, everyone is over it and I’m 5 years behind. Which is how I like it anyway. Hehe. Adam opened me up to Vincent Moon’s clip of the band playing Neon Bible crammed in an elevator.

Ah, I can’t help it. Just one: Kids Incorporated’s cover of my favourite Fleetwood Mac song, Seven Wonders.

I don’t know whether to claw my eyes out or dance along.

It’s almost 2:30 AM so nite nite.

Perfecto.

Song: “The Rip” by Portishead

Video: HERE.

If Lewis Carroll was still alive today I think he would fall out of his antique rocking chair…and down the rabbit hole. This song feels almost storybook, a fantasy of literature…pulsing and rythmic yet totally spaced out.

Turn the lights off…lay down and do whatever it is you do to get to that point where you stop thinking about all the relentless monotony of the everyday and just listen…(smoke?)… lay down…close your eyes….or keep your eyes open…whatever feels right at the time….and just ride that wave ~ ~ ~

The video for this song is the second tier of the full experience…see above paragraph, and repeat….but I would recommend keeping your eyes open for this part of the experiment.

Enjoy

OK

It’s that time of year again. The wrap. After a great deal of deliberation I have arrived at my Albums of the year and my best of 2008 CD.

You’ll not be surprised to see my usual heavy inclusion of female singer songwriters, although in percentage terms they are rather lower than usual – only about 25%. There’s more Rock ‘n ‘roll than previous years. Don’t know why. Just a good year for rock I suppose.

In no particular order my albums of the year were.

Dig Lazarus Dig!!! by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Reviewed here. A total classic that is full of cracking and totally unique songs. I absolutely adore this record.

Third by Portishead. Ten years in gestation it was worth every second of the wait. Eerie, disconcerting. Unique. I reviewed it here.

22 Dreams by Paul Weller. I’m not a fan usually, but this record is wonderful. Reviewed here.

The Very Best of Ethiopiques by various artists. What a wonderful discovery. In a classic year for world music, in particular african stuff this blew me away as I explained here.

Welcome to Mali by Amadou and Mariam. Just in. Just Wonderful. This Malian couple make stunning fresh pop music. Not had time to review it yet.

The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow. Deserved winners of The Mercury Prize. This album came from nowhere and was a hot contender for my album of the year. I reviewed it here.

Only by the Night by Kings of Leon. They just keep getting better. This is a fine record with great grinding melodies.

Stay Positive by The Hold Steady. What a wonderful, opoetic record. The other big contender for album of the year. Reviewed here.

Glasvegas by Glasvegas. Yikes. Scotland’s best this year. Huge sound great lyrics and Geraldine is a gem of a song. Reviewed here.

A Piece of What You Need by Teddy Thomson. This is a great underground folky, rocky album by the son of Richard and Linda Thomson that has been on heavy rotation this year. I suspect Jeana would have it as her album of the year. Very good. Reviewed here.

Juno Soundtrack by Various Artists. One of the movies of the year and a cracking soundtrack to go with it. Another one that received heavy rotation in the spring and summer. Reviewed here.

Aman Iwan by Tinariwen. Last but certainly not least it was actually released in 2007 but it only came to my attention this year. The third of my much loved African albums on the list. Reviewed here.

I have to say in conclusion that Dig Lazarus Dig!!! wins my overall album of the year.

And so, to my best of the year CD…

As usual, if you want a copy you need only ask.

Probably the hardest decision of all was to leave off One day Like This by Elbow in favour of Starlings, but my rules only allow one song per artist.

Overall I thought 2008 was a vintage year and I think this might be my best ‘best of’ yet…

Here’s how it pans out.

1. Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2. That’s not my name by The Ting Tings
3. Cler Achel by Tinariwen
4. The Rip by Portishead
5. Come On Over (Turn Me On) by Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan
6. Have You Made Up Your Mind by Paul Weller
7. Freeway by Aimee Mann
8. Family Tree by TV On The Radio
9. Lights Out by Santogold
10. In My Arms by Teddy Thompson
11. You Cheated Me by Martha Wainwright
12. Geraldine by Glasvegas
13. Starlings by Elbow
14. Daydreamer by Adele
15. The Age Of The Understatement by The Last Shadow Puppets
16. Crawl by Kings Of Leon
17. Lord, I’m Discouraged by The Hold Steady
18. 5 Years Time by Noah And The Whale
19. Sabali by Amadou and Mariam

So good was this year’s stock that I’m strongly considering a ‘B sides best of”.

What do you think?

The aforementioned One Day Like This would feature, as would a couple of tracks from the Very Best Of Ethiopiques, and a great Karine Polwart song called Sorry are among the contenders…

I’ve decided to start this little feature on my blog, to possibly introduce people to some new music or merely offer an opinion on music you already know. I’m going to write this little piece every Friday (hopefully) and it will include both a single of the week and an album of the week (except this week). These will not necessarily be recent tracks or albums, as not all new music is actually good.

Single Of The Week: A Wilhelm Scream – The Rip

For those of you who follow me on Twitter, I have been raving about this band as of late. I have recently rekindled my past love for new American punk music and A Wilhelm Scream personify the genre perfectly. The song The Rip is fuelled with anger and emotion but it’s also melodious and catchy. The chorus somehow manages to drill itself into your head and stick with you all day, the song has just been on my stereo all week.

Find it on their album Mute Print, here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mute-Print-Wilhelm-Scream/dp/B0001WAGTC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226695183&sr=8-3

I will include an album next week, I don’t particularly have a favourite album for this week and I didn’t want to lie about what I’ve been listening to.

This has been floating around the internets for quite a while, but as you can see from the above photo my Radiohead tickets for Victoria Park came yesterday, so I thought I’d celebrate the greatness of Radiohead regardless.

Despite putting ‘tracks’ it really is only strictly one new track, which judging by it’s solo performance by Yorke on piano at Malahide Castle in Dublin is in it’s early stages of genesis. Anyway, it’s quite intriguing as it is, it’ll be interesting to see how the song develops into a more fully formed idea as Radiohead songs inevitably do.

MP3: Radiohead – Super Collider

The second ‘new’ Radiohead release is a cover of ‘The Rip’ off of Portishead’s new album, it’s a relatively standard acoustic note for note cover but it’s nice to see anyway, if only for the bored look on Jonny Greenwood’s face.

MP3: Radiohead – The Rip (Portishead cover)

Switching to Thom Yorke’s solo output, I’ve come across a nice remix of The Eraser, by New Yorker xxxchange. It does a nice job of transforming quite a bleak song into something altogether more funkier. It does seem from my admittedly limited view; that New York, Brooklyn imparticular and France, Paris imparticular, seem to be the centers of the dance music world right now. Anyway Here’s the track.

MP3: Thom Yorke – The Eraser (XXXchange remix)

Finally as a bonus, I came across this a few days ago, didn’t want to devote a whole post to it as it’s not that amazing, but amazing enough to bookend a Radiohead themed post.

I present to you – Nude, as performed by Spectrum ZX, Epsom LX-81 Matrix Printer, HP Scanjet and various Hard Drives. How it works? I have no idea.

As one Youtube comment said: “It brings a whole new meaning to OK Computer”
