Yoga, Meditation, Massage and QiGong all have roots in Eastern cultures that believe health stems from balance of subtle energy that imbues the body with life. In India, this energy is called “prana” and its pathways“nadis;” in China, it is called “chi” and flows through “meridians.” The names are different, however the concepts are the same: invisible energy networks circulates within the body and our health depends upon its free and unobstructed flow.

According to Ayurveda, Indias ancient and still practiced system of natural healing, chakras are at the core of this network. These spinning vortices (”chakra” is Sanskrit for “wheel”) are like conduits of vital energy that continually draw prana in, process it and radiate it back out into the body. When the energy is circulating freely, we feel well, however, a chakra can close shutting off the flow of prana to a certain area of the body and psyche, or it can be overblown, drawing in so much energy that other areas grow weaker.

Our thoughts, our behaviors and the environment around us can all have an effect on the chakras, any disharmony can manifest ill health. Fortunately, the chakras respond well to an array of positive influences – such as affirmations, breathwork, yoga, sound, meditation, massage, essential oils, color and gemstones that can facilitate healing.

Earth, Physical identity, oriented to self-preservation
Located at the base of the spine, this chakra forms our foundation. It represents the element earth, and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of grounding and connection to our bodies and the physical plane. Ideally this chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence.
The second chakra, located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to the element water, and to emotions and sexuality. It connects us to others through feeling, desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally this chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfillment, and the ability to accept change.

It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power.

This chakra is called the heart chakra and is the middle chakra in a system of seven. It is related to love and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, male and female, persona and shadow, ego and unity. A healthy fourth chakra allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, have a deep sense of peace and centeredness

It is related to the act of seeing, both physically and intuitively. As such it opens our psychic faculties and our understanding of archetypal levels. When healthy it allows us to see clearly, in effect, letting us “see the big picture.”
