These are, obviously, gaming plans.

I plan on making more “What if?” Achievement lists, starting with Zelda: MM, and moving on from there. I want to branch out from Nintendo soon, so that I don’t get stuck in a rut. I’m thinking of either God of War or one of the Final Fantasy’s.

As for my X360 plans, I’m planning on 100% completing a total of five retail games and five XBOX Live Arcade games. Currently I’m at Banjo-Kazooie and Dash of Destruction for XBLA, with The Simpson’s Game, LEGO Indiana Jones, and Assassin’s Creed rounding out my retail completions.

So what will I finish them off with? I’m two Achievements away from finishing Iron Man, and I’m roughly half way through completing them. They’re those two pesky Achievements about beating the game on Normal/Hard mode. Thankfully, they’re stackable, so when I finish this Hard (or Formidable as the game calls it) run I’ll get them both. After that, or maybe it’s more realistic to say during, I’ll be playing Bully: Scholarship Edition. I’m in Chapter 4 of 5 (not counting Chapter 6: Endless Summer) and I have only 15 of the 38 Achievements left to….achieve. Damn that sounds lame, but I needed to get it out of my system. So theoretically I could have both games done by the end of the month if they are the only games I play.

Other options for the two retail completions are LEGO Batman, LEGO Star Wars: TCS, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

As far as the XBox Live Arcade games are concerned…I need three to complete. I need only one more Achievement in UNO and Banjo-Tooie, so those could be knocked off fairly quickly. That leaves one left. The only other games I have on my harddrive are Castle Crashers and Hexic HD, both of which offer nothing but time-consuming Achievements to finish them off. I am planning, however, on picking up Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes when it comes out on July 29th, and while the online-based Achievements will cause some difficulty for me, that at least gives another option for me in filling out that third spot. There’s also the option of grabbing Wallace & Gromit, which I know my wife would love to play, but that’s a very unreal possibility.

That’s all for now, but I’ll update the plans section on the first of August. I’m going to try beating Iron Man now, or at least another level or two before switching to Bully. I don’t want to let this blog go for another eight days without a post, so expect something soonly.

Well…I’ve been in this same room for about 6 days now. 5 spent in solitude now, except for the occasional doctor’s visit, nurses waking me up and taking my vitals, and my family members standing outside.

It’s wearing down on me, though not really in the way that I expected it would. I never anticipated that eating warm parfait and cold bacon is so maddening. The food people can’t bring in my meals right as they arrive because the nurses are the only ones allowed inside my room…so the food just sits there, waiting to be brought in. I bet even solitary confinement food is warmer than the mashed potatoes I had for lunch today.

But gosh golly, television is great. <3 I’ve been watching back-to-back episodes of Law and Order and House, lots of Robot Chicken and other Adult Swim programming (AQUA TEEN!), and even the occasional cable reruns of Full House, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and yes, Sister Sister.

Since I moved home, I don’t have cable anymore. Dad feels like he shouldn’t have to pay for a monthly service like that. He also didn’t get us internet until 2000. And we were on dial-up 56K until 2005. Now guess what? We’re still using a HUGE house antenna to get TV. We’re in that category of supposedly elderly Americans who STILL haven’t prepped for digital TV and haven’t set up the converter box. Even my grandma has her box hooked up already…

Yes, our household lives in very backward times.

But maybe my dad is on to something. If we had cable, I could and likely would be doing exactly what I’m doing now: watching nonstop TV.

Between TNT and USA, I can watch marathons of House, Without A Trace, Law and Order, Law and Order: SVU, and Cold Case. Talk about a crime drama wet dream. I had the TV on last night from 11am-1am nonstop, without having to search far for something good to watch. I even watched ALL of the programming on Adult Swim. And could have watched it again, but I’m not a big fan of King of the Hill. I’m a bigger fan than before I came to this room, though. Hank’s voice is oddly soothing…

I’m a bit haunted by this one that Oh Dae-su says in Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy. (If you haven’t seen Oldboy, it’s one of the most disturbing yet brilliant Korean films I have ever seen. I recommend it…with caution)

“The TV is both a clock and a calendar. It’s your school, your home, your church, your friend… and your lover.”

TV is familiar. Comforting. Brain-numbing. Sometimes that’s what we need. Sure, sure, it can be unhealthy escapism from reality…but in my opinion, we can’t face reality 24/7 without going absolutely nutters. That’s why we’re wired with an imagination…and now thanks to technology’s ability to make us do even less, we have TV: society’s imagination. I suppose in a sense, it’s the acceptable adult reconstruction of the imagination that they were socially banned from re-entering after completing childhood. Or just our generation’s absolute laziness and inability to go outside, enjoy the sun, and revel in imagination without labeling it childish.

But in any case, TV serves a certain purpose. And it does it very very well.

Television has a special place in our homes, in our minds, in our hearts.

In our homes, the television is often the focal point of family rooms. We arrange our furniture to provide an optimal view of the tube. Stereo systems enhance the viewing experience. We purchase better televisions with advanced technology to better see the moving pictures. To make the experience more real.

Television piques our brains, our curiosity, our social-norms: the original Star Trek is famously remembered (and made relevant again in the wake of the new film) for bringing up philosophical ponderings about the nature of humanity, and even being socially revolutionary with its first broadcasted interracial kiss. Crime dramas make us marvel at the motives of vile actions and rile our desire to put together the pieces to make sense of it all, and somehow fit justice into the equation. Hospital dramas, even comedies like Scrubs, make us consider ourselves at our most fragilest physical states, and to think of death.  Shows like Lost challenge our ability to suspend disbelief, engaging us into a complicated, fantastic world where an island heals souls and bodies and blends the past, present and future.

And we begin to care. We begin to worry about Jack Bauer’s success and well-being. We cry as characters are mercilessly killed off in season finales due to budget-cuts and expired contracts. We become obsessed about the so well-developed characters of Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, and even Ben on Lost and what will happen to them. We rejoice when Jim and Pam are finally together, and when crew members of the Deadliest Catch return safely home from a life so different from ours, with profitable pots of king crab. We sit on the edge of our couches as people die episode after episode, as lives are changed–at least as long as the series lasts, and as characters achieve the impossible–far beyond what we ourselves will ever hope to become.

And therein lies a danger: that we become contented with living vicariously through the characters we love and have let into our lives.

I decided to turn the TV off for a few hours today. Admittedly…after watching an episode and a half of Without a Trace and Law and Order.

I put down the books, the Nintendo DS (the Simpsons game is brilliant!*), the magazines, the compulsive need to channel surf.

I found that I need some space from our dear friend, the television. (After so much television-watching, I had even found that I have favorite commercials.)

My life currently is as least action-packed as it ever has been. It reads a bit like that Paul Auster book, Travels in the Scriptorium, only with fewer interesting visitors. No offense to my family members.

But in spite of the silence, the boredom, the bad food, the hospital smell, the lack of direct sunlight, the painful IV needles, and the harsh reality that I have a crappy life-threatening rare disease that Dr. Gregory House would make snide yet brilliant remarks about, this is my life: the life I get to live, rather than watch.

Other thoughts:

- Dramas, especially hospital dramas, have this nasty bad habit of having a montage of all the characters accompanied by a slow, thoughtful song, often something like John Mayer.

- I really like alcohol commercials. They tend to be very well-produced. The Bacardi Mojito commercial is classy, nostalgic, and fresh–with a great wardrobe too. It certainly does justice to the drink. I’m not the biggest fan of Dos Equis but the “most interesting man in the world” commercial is absolutely charming. Heck…even that one Coors commercial (sorry, not on youtube) advertising the new blue mountains indicator on cans is cool; that dart trick would be awesome to pull off in real life. I know it’s CG, but hey, it appeals to my college sensibility.

- * The Simpsons Game is absolutely brilliant. The developers know their TV audience and openly acknowledge the difficulties and gimmicks of creating a show-based video game. In a very meta-videogaming way, they even make it a point to count all the “video game cliches” that appear in the gameplay, i.e. pits of death, barriers that need to be destroyed, etc.  Bart even uses a game manual in order to discover his familys super powers. In one level, Bart and Lisa have to cross a river, Frogger-style. Once Lisa painstakingly crosses, Bart has to cross too, and he whines that the game is old-fashioned. Clever. I suppose that much of the glitches/difficult controls in the gameplay can also be dismissed or excused as the game simply making fun of its own genre. Very meta. Applause.

I haven’t delved too deeply into it, but there’s this one level where you have to save Carl and Lenny from buzzsaws of death (which the game points out is yet another video game cliche), and the two talk amongst themselves about their death. At one point, I’m pretty sure they scream “oh no! now I’ll never know what happens to Charlie and Claire on Lost!” That certainly appealed to my nerdy TV-watching side. Good move. More applause.

Kmart isn’t the only big-box store jumping on the SS Cheapgame. During a forced trip to Walmart yesterday, I saw a display case featuring games that had been marked down to only ten Earth dollars. And they weren’t stinkers, either. There were games like Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters for PSP, The Simpsons Game for PS2, and Line Rider 2 for Wii (ok, maybe some of them were stinkers).

I picked up The Simpsons Game for my friend, and got Ratchet and Clank for myself. Who knows if I’ll ever even play it, but at only ten bucks, I couldn’t not buy it.

Whoosh. Sorry about another missed update, this week’s been a tad work intensive, with rewrite work, freelance jobs, a Halo Wars review and a three-day Mythic Map Pack diary for GamerNode, not to mention the latest Plot Wholes, which you can find here.

This week I’ve started using Games Frenzy, the videogame rental service for the UK which is much akin to the USA’s GameFly. It’s great, though I’m baffled as to why I made a playlist of seventeen games, set SFIV and F.E.A.R. 2 as high priority, and got sent The Simpsons and Spidey: Web of Shadows.

Nonetheless, the Marvel title has turned out to be absolutely fantastic, save a few controller-clenchingly annoying camera issues. Tip: if you lock onto something in that game, no matter what you do, never try and move the camera. It doesn’t like you doing so, and will either show you Spiderman’s feet, or the sky above his head. When annoyed, the camera will either physically seem to sulk, or stare at clouds. Annoying? Yes. Annoying during a boss fight requiring ages of replay if you so happen to kick the proverbial bucket? Most definitely.

As for the blog, I’m working on a ton of stuff this week and next, but next week blog posts will go up like clockwork. Have no fear. I’ve also done a couple of tests by putting an Alan Wake article I wrote up on N4G.com and dear lord, my hits went through the roof, so I’ll be writing a lot more articles, and a lot less regurgitated news items.

O post seria vinte vezes maior se comentasse todos os títulos dos Simpsons – Arcade Game, Bart vs. the Space Mutants, Hit & Run… Um melhor que o outro. Para não falar das referências no próprio seriado. O comercial que separo é do mais recente feito pela EA Games o qual vergonhosamente ainda não consegui jogar direito. O reclame é tão bem bolado quanto os momentos inspirados do desenho, mostrando como as situações de jogo ficam ridículas na vida real. Sobretudo com o Homer.

Dear diary,

I’ve been binging on Oblivion like mad for almost two weeks. My character’s becoming a badass, but it’s taking forever. The quests are hard to complete. Word has it that the game has a sorta back-asswards level-up system where the game gets harder as your character’s abilities improve (you can kill tough bosses easily at lvl 1), and it kinda feels that way. Linger in Shadows is not a game. Neither is it art— It’s an interactive video. A cool one, but nothing more or less. Easiest set of trophies you’ll ever get, only because the Simpsons game doesn’t support the feature.

Sometimes i get jiggy in Warhawk, but my mic keeps messing up on that after the 1st round. Played COD4 with some local friends earlier for the first time in months. Nice to play online with/against people you actually know. I’m still nasty, but that game is still dead.

Smash Court Tennis never fails me. That is the most complete game of tennis i’ve ever possessed. Wish i were talking about my real-life game. If only there was a way for my PSP to be tracking how much i’ve played it since i got it. Sunk a massive amount of time there. Makes me want a PSP-3000 for some reason. Wonder if it’s still hackable. For my, um, custom… themes. :’|8

Any stories you’d like to share?

Nossa como o ano tá correndo. Mal tenho tempo pra postar no Guri, o pouco que tá sobrando to usando pra jogar.. hahahahaha.

Então vou aproveitar o tempinho agora pra postar sobre os últimos jogos que peguei para Xbox 360. Alguns velhos e outros que acabaram de sair do forno.

O primeiro depois do meu Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 foi o tão esperado GTA IV, eu não to na metade do jogo ainda mas já posso falar que é muito bom. Os gráficos até que não é algo de se espantar, tem algunas falhas e tal, principalmente nos rostos e expressões, mas os gráficos dos carros, luz, água, cenários é muito bom. Aliás nos cenários pra mim que está o destaque. Nessa versão a interatividade com os objetos do cenário é incrível. Enfim, jogo muito bom que acaba te prendendo por horas sem notar. Ainda não liberei muitos “Archivements” pois é fogo, e minha pontuação na Live tá baixa, sem sem quanto. Depois eu coloco meu GamerTag aqui.

Depois consegui o Iron Man, muito bom o jogo, mas se parar por algumas horas termina rápido. Eu demorei umas 6 horas pra terminar o jogo. O jogo é ótimo pra quem vê o filme e vai jogar, pois tem alguns detalhes de animação e roteiro bem legais. O ponto fraco do jogo é somente 1, a SEGA pecou (na minha opinião é claro) na renderização do Iron Man, ele fica com tipo de névoa na volta da armadura. Parece que ele fica mais claro do que deveria dependendo do cenário. Fora isso vale e muito a pena. Após virar se deixou de fazer alguma coisa na fase, pode voltar e terminar sem problemas. Também tem a opção “One Man Army” que habilita as outras “armaduras”. depois faço um review completo.

Agora peguei 3 de uma vez e deixei 2 para depois, com mais calma. Os jogos são Gears of War, Army of Two e The Simpsons Game.

O Gears e o Army of Two é que vou deixar pra falar depois com mais calma, mas certo que é bala. Afinal na casa do meu irmão fiquei jogando por 5 horas direto o Gears of War, e o Demo do Army of Two que peguei na Live achei muito bom.

The Simpsons Game é melhor do que eu esperava, a história tem muita animações exclusivas para o jogo e a jogabilidade é muito boa. O esquema é que a família “vira” um jogo e os personagens adquirem super-poderes. Cada um mais bala e engraçado que o outro. Comecei a jogar ontem e hoje vou continuar, muito legal, principalmente com alguém do lado vendo junto (pois não consegui comprar outro controle ainda hahaha) e utilizar o modo Co-op. Jogo para a família, crianças até podem jogar ou olhar, pois o jogo é em inglês e a legenda também é óbvio, então não vão entender nada!

Bom pessoal, vou deixar por isso só hoje e vou tentar voltar amanhã com mais algumas novidades ou então procuro por notícias que valem a pena. Se bem que o Vagabundo de plantão tá mandando bem hahahaha

I finally finished The Simpsons Game yesterday, which should have been done a long time ago, but along came a small speed bump known as the “COD4 Variety Map Pack” that was taking up most of my gaming time. After seeing the end of it, though, I was mad at myself for not having completed it earlier.

Everything about TSG was great, except one thing: the game itself. It was written by fo’ reals Simpson’s writers, and it was hilarious. It had all the popular characters, as well as minor ones that hardcore Simpsons fans love (no Frank Grimes, though, which was disappointing). The same thing goes for the settings. It takes place at various spots around Springfield, complete with explorables like the Simpson’s house, and the Android’s Dungeon.

It’s been said over and over, though, that the actual playing of the game; running, jumping, fighting guys, is really bad. The camera is out to make your life hell, and there were some moments when I wanted to throw my entire Xbox 360 out the window (I’m looking at you, pole-to-pole jumping). But the good parts of the game, especially the last thirty-ish minutes, is worth playing through the whole thing. Tyler mentioned that if he could go back, he would make this his GOTY 2007 one of his GOTY’s 2007. I don’t know if I would go that far, but I do think this game was highly underrated. For a more throrough review, check out Tyler’s here, but I highly recommend giving this game a go if you are a fan of the show. If you are not, I hate you.

La película de esta familia cumplió su cometido, campañas promociónales y millones de productos basados en The Simpsons invadieron el mercado, y claro los VG no son la excepción. EA nos trae a los Simpsons en una aparente buena adaptación, y lo digo así para que lean mi revisión de este titulo.

Este titulo es de acción-aventura. Donde tomaras a 2 miembros de la familia para realizar misiones y avanzar tus objetivos. La historia es un clásico, un refrito de todas las cosas que podrías ver en un capitulo de “Halloween”. Y como parte de la campaña de EA se parodian juegos famosos. Tales como Neverquest, Grand Theft Scratchy, Medal of Homer y Shadow of the Colossal Donut, entre algunos otros.

Y aquí empieza la crítica. El gameplay es mediocre. El control sobre tus personajes es aburrido, aun cuando cada personaje tendrá sus propias habilidades conforme avances en la aventura. Las misiones son frustrantes en un 90% de las veces, puesto que estas limitado a correr, eliminar y volver a correr. Y claro con esto también me refiero a la búsqueda de los objetos y clichés que debes hacer a lo largo de las misiones, para obtener nuevas habilidades o premios. La música es tediosa, haciendo tu vida en el juego aun mas larga. La IA es molesta, puesto que no hay en realidad dificultad, o destruyes a todos o solo déjalos atrás; es decir no hay un buen reto.

En resumen, este juego prometía mucho. Te vas a divertir al ver las animaciones como si estuvieras viendo la serie de TV, incluso cuando escuches los diálogos que te harán recordar viejos chistes. Pero el problema es lo frustrante del control sobre tu personaje perdiendo “vidas” una y otra vez, hasta que le agarres el modo y pases el nivel; o te veras enfrentando a cientos de enemigos genéricos, para llegar a un seudojefe, que eliminaras por suerte o porque simplemente apretaste botones a lo loco. Estoy desilusionado de este titulo, porque aun cuando lo puedes jugar con un amigo, sigue siendo tedioso. No importa que versión compres, mi veredicto es el mismo. Ay carumba!!!

On the Simpsons game first you give your pet homer some chocolate and then he falls asleep and dreams about chocolate world and you need to move homer round the level by killing chocolate rabbits , jumping on and off of marsh mellows and jumping onto moving burgers.After you kill a rabbit at the top of a cake homer turns fat and you fall into the cake and your only attack is dash attack. After that you go to the map and choose the museum you get to be homer and bart.

This weeks biggest release Assassin’s Creed, despite tepid reviews, soars to the top of every chart for all the machines it has been released on. The much , much better Super Mario Galaxy makes it in at number 5 in the all formats. Apart from that there is very little movement. Expect Mass Effect to do big things after its release!

EA Games esta promocionando este nuevo juego con un comercial muy copado! el cual les dejo para que aprecien!!!

Los simpsons llegaron en una nueva version a las modernas consolas de videos juegos…

La compania EA encargada en realizar este video juego, (para las consolas PlayStation2, PSP, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 y Wii), utiliso a Springfield en un nuevo campo de aventuras para esta familia, con mas de 100 personajes ya antes vistos en capitulos (lo cual lo hace muy divertido para los fanaticos), con esto se busco no desepsionar a ningun fan.

Una de las cosas que nos sorprenderan es que esta ves presentan “superpoderes” y alguna que otra parodia de otros videos juegos.

“The Simpsons Game is exactly what it had to be, but nothing more. Had it offered online cooperative play, or local co-op play that was actually as much fun as the single-player game (if not more so) then the score would definitely be higher, but as it stands The Simpsons is a enjoyable, though very short, single-player game that both hardcore and casual Simpsons fans will love. Heck, if you like to laugh then this game is at least worth a rental.”
