Com um desenvolvimento que durou mais de 3 anos, o jogo tem como diferencial os personagens que agora terão uma interação ainda maior com suas vizinhanças. Dentre os novos locais, estão a prefeitura e o parque, mas há também o centro da cidade, restaurantes e as residências (inclusive a dos vizinhos, com a tentação quase irresistível de “dar uma espiadinha”). Com uma temática mais aberta, “The Sims 3″ pretende dar vida a muito mais histórias.

Para a criação física de um sim, a novidade é uma gama muito maior de opções de rostos e roupas, para dar ainda mais realismo gráficos aos personagens. Também será possível incrementar muito mais o psicológico dos personagens: poderá ser criada uma personalidade virtual, que acompanhará o sim ao longo de sua vida. A construção e decoração da casa continua, mas agora com muito mais facilidade. Os Sims não terão mais quer fazer necessidades básicas e o foco será muito maior em suas interações sociais. O lançamento está previsto para o meio do ano de 2009.
