Få grupper har betytt mer för den jamaicanska musiken än 60-talsikonerna The Skatalites. Kvartetten Jackie Mittoo, Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso och framlidne Don Drummond satte på egen hand ska-musiken på kartan. Men The Skatalites är mer än stompig ska, det visar tre plattor från insomnade Motion Records.

Supergruppen The Skatalites har beskrivits som en institution snarare än ett band. De är en fulländad samling fantastiska musiker som både enskilt och gemensamt skapade odödliga klassiker som Guns of Navarone, Lawless Street och Eastern Standard Time.

Och det var just ju ska som satte gruppen på kartan. Det få vet är att The Skatalites spelat in några makalösa plattor omkring tio år efter att de gick skilda vägar 1965.

Runt mitten av 70-talet samlades nämligen stora delar av The Skatalites igen för att spela in basisten Lloyd Brevetts soloplatta African Roots.

Ungefär samtidigt träffades de även tillsammans med producenten Herman Chin Loy i hans Aquarius-studio. Resultatet blev instrumentalplattan The Legendary Skatalites som släpptes 1976. Men den här gången handlar det inte om ska, The Legendary Skatalites är roots ut i fingerspetsarna. Kanske något jazzigare än andra instrumentalplattor från samma period.

Plattan följdes av Herb Dub, Collie Dub med tunga dubversioner signerade King Tubby.

Fram till för ett par år sedan var de här plattorna endast för skivsamlare med plånböcker tjockare än Sveriges statsbudget. Men skivbolaget Motion har gjort världen en tjänst genom att ge ut plattorna The Legendary Skatalites in Dub, Herb Dub, Collie Dub och Heroes of Reggae on Dub.

The Skatalites var en samling av världens främsta musiker och det är nog ingen som någonsin skulle tvivla på att gruppen kunde spela mer än ska. Men fram till nu har det varit förhållandevis okänt att de kunde låta lika bra i dub- och roots-tappning.

Ah, the history of ska.

I keep talking about “third wave” ska, and because ska isn’t very mainstream, I decided to do a quick, one-minute bio on the life of ska (so far).

In order for there to be a third wave, there needs to be a first and second wave. First off though, what exactly is ska?

Well, according to the wikipedia page of the genre, ska is a music genre with “combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues” and also has “a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the upbeat.” Basically, imagine reggae with guitar and bass. Also, most ska possesses horns, although it’s not mandatory.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let’s start at the beginning: first wave.

According to “Urban Spaces and Working Class Expressions across the Black Atlantic: Tracing the Routes of Ska” by Joseph Heathcott, (whoever thought there would be academic articles over ska?) ska originated in Jamaica in the late ’60s. In Jamaica, ska was combined the old island traditional scene with different pop culture items from America, Britain, and Jamaica. Heathcott says “the horn-dominated instrumentation, syncopated rhythms, up-tempo timing, and downbeat emphasis marked ska as an emergent genre of music.” The genre’s following mainly consisted of the urban youngsters, and so they were dubbed “rude boy,” because of their rebellion against adults. In the beginning there was only a few ska bands such as the Skatalites (who took a hiatus but came back in the ’80s), and Prince Buster, both Jamaican. Here’s a taste of first-wave by the Skatalites. Soon after, famous soundbodies such as Bob Marley and Lee “Scratch” Perry started out as the upbeat ska that first-wave is, but they soon contributed to a slower tempo, emerging the two generes of reggae and rocksteady (a misnomer for the No Doubt album). Although both have slower tempos and a heavier bass, reggae tends to be faster than rocksteady. An example of rocksteady and reggae is Phyllis Dillon.

With second wave in the late ’70s, the Beat, Madness, and the Specials were just a few of the ska bands that were blasted on American stereoes and in British clubs. Originated in the London area after reggae was introduced by Jamaican immigrants, these two-tone bands demonstrated a faster and more aggressive sound as opposed to rocksteady’s slow tone. Second wave called to much of the youth, but it soon dissolved. Here’s “The Prince” by Madness, which actually pays tribute to first waver Prince Buster.

Probably the most listened-to and famous type of ska is the ultimate third wave. Erupting from the late ’80s and early ’90s, third wave actually has a few sub-genres inside of it; ska-core, ska punk, and ska inspired by first wave. With first wave, Heathtcott continues to say that third-wave combines it with punk influences. These sounds include Voodoo Glow Skulls and the legendary but short-lived Operation Ivy. Many bands of this generation were also influenced by two-tone, which is what influenced ska-core and ska punk. Ska punk possesses many brass instruments such as trumpets, trombones, and other horns and a faster punk tempo. Ska-core is a more extreme version of this, only with hard-core punk. Most of the bands that I mention in other posts are third-wave (if not, all), such as the Toasters, Reel Big Fish, and Less Than Jake. Check out the video in the last post for a shot of ska punk.

Yesterday, the popular online magazine Pop Matters published my ska thesis, The Ska Will Go On. For this article on the rise and fall of ska music, I interviewed several of the scene’s movers and shakers including musicians, record producers, and DJs. The piece is already spurring controversy in certain ska circles because it fails to mention some bands and gives too much space to others. But, all comments have generally been positive. It’s always hard to write a comprehensive history of a cultural movement, because, ultimately, cultural histories are subjective. Just look at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. The Ska Originals

The Jam-Tex selector presents a new chapter in the “Wolrd of Reggae Music Collection“ called The Ska Originals.

The Jam-Tex selector has been working on a study and organization of the essential tracks of reggae music called “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” The selector invites others to comment on the selected tracks and to join in on the conversation about the history of reggae music.  This collection of singles began with the greatest roots reggae hits in categories entitled “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lions of Jah” and “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lion Youth.”

Now the selector moves back in time to the roots of reggae, exploring the greatest singles from the early ska era. Please feel free to suggest your favorite singles. The primary examination of the “Ska Originals” genre focuses on the founders of ska music from the late 1950s to the 1960s. Later posts will explore “Two-Tone Ska” and “Third Wave Ska” forms of ska music of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Some of the same Jamaican singers, musicians, and producers of the original ska music movement later became the fathers and mothers of rocksteady and reggae.  A young Robert Nesta Marley recorded some ska tunes and so did Bob Marley’s vocal group the Wailin’ Wailers, which later became the Wailers. Alton Ellis, Jimmy Cliff, Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker, John Holt, Ken Boothe, Derrick Morgan, Clancy Eccles, and Lee “Scratch” Perry all played ska as young lads. These Jamaican superstars all make this collection of ska singles. So do the classic ska bands and vocal groups like The Skatalites, the Ethiopians, The Pioneers, the Soulettes, The Paragons, The Heptones, and the Versatiles. Many of the great ska musicians have singles that made this chart, like Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, and Tommy McCook.

Ska music is fun and fast, yet a very easy-going music that sends you skanking around the room. I love this music. There are some wonderful characters that came out of this musical genre, performers like Prince Buster, Sir Lord Comic, Lord Kitchener, Stranger Cole, Lord Creator, and the Folkes Brothers. Plus the dynamite sounds of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires make for some of the most classic ska tracks. The Jam-Tex selector invites you to comment on the list and make suggestions.

Aquest any he assistit per segon cop consecutiu a l’acampada jove organitzada pe la JERC i celebrada a la bella ciutat de Montblanc.

I com l’any passat en aquest edició m’ha decebut l’organització de l’acampada, si l’any anterior la vaig anomenar com acampada xopa aquest any ho faré com atracada jove, encara que jo vaig entrar gratis gràcies a L’espurna de Piera, trobo que els preus de l’entrada són abusius  per una festa com aquesta.

• En primer lloc, és increïble que la zona d’acampada es pagués apart amb un preu de 6 € per nit.
• L’entrada individual de Dijous la trobo exagerada, ja que els grups que tocaven aquella nit els podem veure gratis en qualsevol festa major d’un poble dels països catalans .
• El preu de les begudes alcohòliques era una mica alt sobretot el de l’aigua de València que era de 3€ per un simple got.

A part dels preus es poden trobar altres aberracions, com per exemple dir que Los Delinqüentes són el cap de cartell de tota l’acampada quan també tocaven els pares de l’Ska : The Skatalites.

Un punt a favor de l’acampada organitzada l’any passat a Sant Celoni és que l’organització dels diferents llocs de l’acampada eren millors que la d’aquest any.

I per acabar una anècdota: A la seguretat de l’acampada estaven els “segurates” de  La Sala.

it takes more then bass, drums & guitar to make great music.  or, if you’re the white stripes you can do it with less then that.  but, be that as it may, this music monday will be dedicated to those who rock the other instruments.  to start with, my favorite banjoist (kermit aside), earl scruggs, of the amazing bluegrass duo flatt & scruggs.  the fellas met in bill monroe’s band, the bluegrass boys, then went on to create some incredible music as a duo.  this video is from a project scruggs did with steve martin and some other pickers called men with banjos who know how to use them.  here they are live on letterman.

and speaking of bill monroe, the man who manhandled the mandolin was the father of bluegrass music. monroe’s mandolin isn’t so much featured in this video, but i love the song so i chose it  it’s “blue moon of kentucky” live from austin city limits in 1980.  (side note:  the best version of the song EVER was done by the one & only patsy cline)

moving from bluegrass to jazz, i give to you the master – miles davis.  i read something that bono said once, to the effect of how he knew God existed when he heard miles.  understandable.  so watch this and debunk atheism!  here he his live on the steve allen show in ‘64 doing my favorite song of his, “so what”, with herbie hancock on piano.

sometimes i hear from people that they don’t like jazz.  that it’s boring.  that they need lyrics and singing. my rebuttal:  a love supreme by john coltrane.  no one was as cool as coltrane, and it wasn’t just the junk that made him that way.  coltrane was an incredibly spiritually oriented person, and in the liner of a love supreme said “during the year 1957, i experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which was to lead me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. at that time, in gratitude, i humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music.”  he succeeded.  sadly this video is just a snippet of “acknowledgement”, the first song on the landmark album, but this link is a japanese tribute band doing the whole thing.  but, there’s only 1 coltrane – here live in ‘65.

next on the list of jazz masters is my man thelonious monk.  that’s the greatest name ever.  monk is regarded as the father of bebop, but later in his career would create a sound all his own, one his wife joked was “melonious thunk”.  from ‘66 here’s “straight, no chaser”.

next up is the man who was one of the most important figures in jamaican music.  don drummond was the original trombonist of the skatalites, the house band of studio one – the “motown of jamaica”, and like james jamerson of the funk brothers was the genius amongst geniuses.  the skatalites were the backing band on nearly all the original jamaican ska & rocksteady songs that would first spread across jamaica, and then later through the keen ears of the original skinheads, be revived in england and from there across the world.  drummond is the godfather of ska.  no videos (as far as i can tell) survive of the man, but here’s one of my absolute favorites of his, “man in the street”.

when i was 16 i sold my snowmobile to get 2 technics turntables & scratchmaster mixer.  when i needed money a year later i sold them.  i wish i hadn’t.  though my favorite dj’s will always be the holy trinity of hip hop – the architects – kool herc, afrika bambaataa & grandmaster flash, along with those who came after like dj premier, terminator x, jam master jay, dj red alert & kid capri, i can’t think of anyone i’d want to feature as a master of turntablism more then dj q-bert.  the dude is SICK!  this is a video of q-bert & friend d-styles freestyling.

the ukulele is the new banjo.  my friend soixante, aka sarah, is a big fan of this girl on youtube who does these ukulele versions of songs.  her name is liz wood, and she’s pretty cool.  tiny tim’s got nothing on this hip chick.  here she is doing “such great heights”.

clearly i love traditional irish music (shocker, i know).  and there’s no better collection of irish musicians then the chieftains.  this collective of masters gives us such amazing instruments as the uilleann pipes, fiddle (it’s really the same thing as a violin), the harp, the bodhrán, the tin whistle, accordian and bones.  yes, bones.  i love these lads.  here’s some reels for what ails ya.

now i want to hear bagpipes!  from scotland, the battlefield band!  what a great way to end music monday.

Bom, o post que questionava sobre a presença do Skatalites rendeu bastante, como vocês mesmo podem constatar aqui. Seria um sonho ter essa grande banda de Ska aqui em Beagá, mas no momento é inviável, não temos o capital para investir, o tempo é curto e mesmo com 61 comentários (até o momento) são poucas pessoas para pagar o evento. Não estou considerando que só essas 61 pessoas iriam, com certeza seriam mais, mas é muita incerteza para um grupo de pessoas aque não tem nem onde cair morto hehehehe!

Mas o importante com essa enquete é descobrir que tem pessoas que querem o crescimento da cena musical jamaicana e influências aqui em Beagá. Nós estamos tentando aumentar isso e com cooperação dos principais interessados, vocês, isso se torna mais fácil. Precisamos que frequentem os eventos, que movimentem a cidade, que nos ajudem nesse sentido.

É possível que em outubro ou dezembro a banda The Slackers volte ao Brasil e existe a possibilidade de trazermos ela para Beagá. Comecem a pensar a respeito. Quem sabe você não vê Skatalites esse ano, mas assite um show do Slackers! E posso garantir que eles são foda. Vamos trabalhar isso galera, só depende de nós. Quem sabe conseguimos?

Esse é um post atípico. Quero fazer uma enquete aqui e peço muito a colaboração de todos. Não quero usar aquelas enquetes prontas e tal, gostaria que quem animar à minha proposta deixe um recado nos comentários. Acho que fica mais interessante, pois vamos até conhecendo as pessoas.

Surgiu uma possível possibilidade de haver um show do Skatalites em Beagá no dia 10 de junho, uma quarta-feira. O ingresso teria que variar entre 40 à 60 reais. Quem sairia de casa na quarta e pagaria esse valor para ver os pais do SKA? i just did a “top 5 concerts” on the fizzlebizzle.  i wasn’t sure what to do music monday on, and that seems like a good idea.  now, there are many, many artists and bands i LOVE and haven’t had the privilege of seeing live – mostly b/c i love people who are dead (not in a necro way).  but, i’ve seen some great shows.  i’m not as into shows as i used to be.  senior year in high school, going to see rustic overtones was a weekend ritual.  and in college, hardcore shows were habit.  since then, most of the shows i’ve seen have been of friends.  the “scene” aspect of shows keeps me away, i’m an old fella’ now.  but, i was pleasantly suprised by the crowd when i saw moz, not nearly as hipsterific as i had feared.  i think i’ll try and get back into going to shows.  i kick myself over all the shows i’ve missed in providence out of a “ewww hipsters” attitude.  i missed cursive!  oh well.  so, all that being said, here’s 10 artists/bands i’ve seen live and loved.

starting off, my #1 all-time, u2.  i was about 10 feet from the band (bono is very tiny, btw) and it was just an amazing experience.  best live show ever.  here’s the song they opened that show with, “city of blinding lights”.  

#2 on the list is pedro the lion / david bazan.  i’ve seen bazan x3 (which is a lot less then i probably should’ve, according to the severity of my fandom), and each time has been amazing.  however, the very first time was the most special, particularly considering his encore of my favorite song of all-times, “secret of the easy yoke“.  the last time i saw him he’d officially dropped the PTL moniker and was solo.  here he is doing a song i love to play myself, “of minor prophets and prostitute wives”.  

jeff tweedy is hilarious.  i’ve seen wilco twice (again, i realize i should’ve seen them like a dozen times – what can i say, i’m not hip!), and both times were amaaaaazing.  the first time back in ‘02 was probably my favorite of the 2, but the second time i saw them, in ‘06, the highlight was definately “spiders (kidssmoke)”.  glenn kotche & john stirrat are such an incredible rhythm section.  if you haven’t seen this band, do so.  post haste.

now, my very very first show was back ‘96 and it was the mighty mighty bosstones.  prior to this, i was totally into hip hop, the bosstones were the first band i really got into, my junior year in high school.  and they didn’t disappoint.  from the ’stones i was introduced to hardcore, punk & ska and got into bands like minor threat, the clash and the skatalites.  and i still love dicky barrett.  i sold merch for my friends band back in the ‘03-’05 years, and the best experience i had doing so was when they played with avoid one thing and i got to hang out with ’stones bassist joe gittleman.  side note:  who remembers the jon stewart show?  i do!  here’s “pictures to prove it”.

i haven’t seen anyone who has played more songs or for a longer period of time then willie nelson.  seriously, weed is supposed to make you lazy, but neither that nor his being wicked old kept the red headed stranger from playing about 63 songs in what had to be 3 hours.  dude’s crazy.  now, i’d say the artist who is #1 on my must see list as of now is ryan adams (though i wonder if i’ll experience one of his many tantrum shows), so let’s mix up the best of have seen with the must see list and a song that features willie & ryan, doing jimmy cliff’s “the harder they come” on letterman.

now, the next 5 are not in any specific order.  i have to give love to rustic overtones for being the band i’ve seen the most (friends excluded).  in my late teen years these dudes from portland (MAINE!) were so special to me and my friends.  one of my favorite times seeing them was in nyc opening for run-dmc, and when i went up to dave gutter, the frontman, he had this look of shock that someone there knew him.  very different from playing colleges in new england where everyone treated him like a rock god.  the band got a major label deal, made one record, broke up, formed 2 awful bands, re-united and made an awful album.  but, those late 90’s days will always hold a very special place in my heart.  here’s an “old” song, “iron boots” live in woodstock from last year.

the new england ska festival occurred twice, in ‘97 & ‘98 in mass.  and they were both amazing, so many great bands, so many fred perry polos and so many skinheads.  seeing the skatalites was incredible, but i’d have to say the best band i saw at either was hepcat.  featuring alex desert, who gained some notoriety in the films swingers and p.c.u., but moreso for his recurring role on the show “becker”.  here’s the fellas live doing “ska train”.

during college, i was tim til death, and i attended many a’ hardcore show.  there was simply nothing else like it.  the sing-a-longs, the pile-ons, the floorpunching, the finger points, the release.  it’s something that can’t be recaptured, b/c hardcore is a young man’s game.  but, i have a bunch of tattoos and a much stronger faith b/c of the huge influence the hardcore scene had on me in my late teens/early 20’s.  of all the bands i saw and all the shows i went to, perhaps (i say perhaps b/c i’m sure i’ll think of a bunch more afterwards!) the most memorable was stretch arm strong, opening for the legendary sick of it all.  my college love of 3 years had just dumped me, and my roomie and our boy ryan went down to jerzy to see SOIA and SAS and it was so therapeutic.  i think it’s the only time i stage dived, a few times actually.  i’m a big dude, i was more into the sing-a-longs.  this video is the perfect encapsulation of those old shows – no stage, pile-ons and the shaky camera work.  i miss those days.  here’s “for now”.

the first time i saw bob dylan i was a long haired bob marley obsessed ganja loving 17 year old.  i saw him in bangor, and when he came onstage me and my friend ran up to see him right in front of us.  now, this was a seated affair, and the bouncer shoved me.  i was upset by this.  when we went back to our seats, there were 3 stupid rednecks who had somehow gotten a cooler of cheap beer in, and were yelling at the “hippies” who were blocking there view.  infuriated, i tapped one on the shoulder and screamed “it’s BOB DYLAN!  not alan jackson!”  a few f-u’s were exchanged and then the rest is history.  i saw dylan again in ‘02, this time no fights.  his voice is basically shredded, but it’s still an amazing thing to be like “wow, that’s bob dylan“.  indeed.  here’s “tombstone blues”.

and to end out the show, here’s morrissey.  yes, i finally saw the moz.  and, as many of ye know, i missed the first 5 friggin’ songs!  which included such favorites as “this charming man”, “how soon is now?” and “irish blood, english heart”.  i know, I KNOW!  now, had i arrived in time to witness this, i may not have been so upset that he didn’t do an encore.  basically, i have to see him again.  i can’t really count that show, i must get it all, i must see him walk on stage.  I MUST!  here’s the mozzy one with “all you need is me”.

Mugison – Mugimama, is this monkey music (2004) (43:33)

Alltså, man kan bara inte vara annat är förundrat över hur mycket bra musik kommer från ett land som har lika många invånare som Värmland. Ja, jag känner mig väldigt patriotisk när jag tänker på det. Jävlar vad stolt jag är över mitt land! Och fan vad jag har svårt att förstå varför Mugison har inte blivit ett större fenomen än. Hans låtar är vackra, roliga, sorgliga, idiotiska och allt annat som möjligen kan tänkas. Han är typ… typ… ja… det finns knappast något (som jag har hört.. eller vänta… kanske Beck men va fan) som liknar honom. Den här skivan är jävligt bra och en ganska lugn sida av honom.

Badda badda boom!

Det är endast två artister som representeras två gånger på den här listan. Den första var ju Kaizers Orchestra… Och ja… om du inte är blind så borde du ha fattat vem den andra är. (hur fan läser du det här om du är blind?)

Jag förklarade ju ganska bra förut hur bra Mugison är, så det borde inte vara förvånande att han finns med här igen. Han är ju så extremt bra att man knappast tro det. Och om den förra skivan var lugn så är det här vild… den har lugna låtar visst, det brukar alla skivor ha. Men här dras det bra igång redan med första låten Mugiboogie. D.v.s. så är det här en album som man kan dansa skinnet av sig till. Nej… nu tycker jag att du börjar lyssna på killen medans du läser de senaste albumen!

Tim Buckley – Goodbye and Hello (1967) (42:49)

Det var väl oväntad eller hur och något lite annorlunda? Jeff Buckleys farsa är underbar, samma typ av röst som hans son har… som är förståligt eftersom Jeff fick den av honom. Dock så spelar Tim annorlunda typ av musik, mer åt country men präglat av: psychadelica, Funk, Jazz, Soul och avantgarde. Sist men inte minst så har han fantastiska texter. Men är man förvånad över hur bra hans musik är…? Hans son är ju Jeff Buckley för fan.

The Skatalites – Ball of Fire (1998) (1:04:28)

Det är många skivor som är speciella på något sätt här. Dags för en som är nästan endast instrumentell. The Skatalites är levande gudar av ska musik. När en lyssnar på det här så förstår man varför för att musiken gör så att en hamnar i en sorts trans. Detta är något som är obligatoriskt för alla ska älskare, precis som man måste ha lyssnat på Beatles när det gäller rock (dock så är den här skivan ju ganska ny men ännu en gång… va fan). Passar bäst med en kopp te och lite tid att döda.

Guldkorn: Spela det här när du vill ”chilla” eller vad fan du vill kalla det, alla låtar lika bra

The Faint – Fasciinatiion (2008) (35:00)

Det är kanske bara jag men på något sätt så uppfattar jag The Faint musik som väldigt djup. Texterna är komiska men också väldigt seriösa. Det blir sen en lite extra känsla att det hela känns som ”robot-musik” (i alla fall för mig). Ja det här är ett prima album att avsluta denna fina lista med. Nu har jag säkerligen inte så många vänner fortfarande men vad fan. Musik är väl det viktigaste?
