Third Wave Ska

The Jam-Tex selector presents a new chapter in the “World of Reggae Music Collection” called “Third Wave Ska.”

The Jam-Tex selector has been working on a study and organization of the essential tracks of reggae music called “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” The selector invites others to comment on the selected tracks and to join in on the conversation about the history of reggae music. This collection of singles began with the greatest roots reggae hits in categories entitled: “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lions of Jah”and “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lion Youth.”

Now the selector moves back in time to the roots of reggae, exploring the greatest singles from the ska tradition. Please feel free to suggest your favorite singles. The examination of the ska genre included a focused study on the founders of ska music from the late 1950s to the 1960s called: “The Ska Originals.” The next post explored the “Two-Tone Ska” movement of the 1970s and 1980s often called the second wave of ska music. This post focuses on “Third Wave Ska” music that fused ska and elements of punk.

In the 1990s the revival of ska music, known as the third wave, came in a raw form with strong ties to the punk rock music scene. It’s no surprise since ska music comes with a fast-paced rollicking energy that appealed to young working-class youths. British and American punks ate up reggae and ska, and the sound fused well with rip-roaring punk rock. My favorites from this genre include Operation Ivy, Fishbone, Rancid, and Sublime. Brad Nowell of Sublime had a knack for making great third-wave ska punk rock.

The Aggrolites have mad a distinct impression on the third-wave ska movement, bringing their California soul-drenched sound to the mix. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are symbolic of this genre, laying grimy vocals over ska horns and rock guitars. Some of the great punk bands have made their own ska-infused tracks, including NOFX, Goldfinger, the Offspring, and even the hardcore punk group Propagandhi.

Propagandhi’s track “Ska Sucks” is really a critique of the ska revival. As a representative of the punk intelligentsia, Propagandhi questions everyone and everything, including authority, religion, and the quality of the ska revival. The song makes a captivating argument why the ska revival “sucks,” singing the message over a wonderful third wave ska sound.

“What have I done wrong that I should be sorry?”

Today was another break from the norm in terms of my morning musical selection, The Slackers. For almost as long as I can remember, my brother has been a big fan of ska music and in particular two groups, Hepcat and The Slackers. I have gotten the chance to see The Slackers live a couple times, once at Abe and Jakes in Lawrence, Kansas and once in April this year at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago. Both times, I was really impressed. I am not too familiar with all of their music but I haven’t really heard a song that I didn’t like. After the show in Chicago, I downloaded a few of their albums and have really enjoyed all of them. Their album, Wasted Days, in particular is a really dope album. The title track from the album is just amazing. I put it on this morning and had to run it back a couple times. It is just a great song. If you are not familiar with The Slackers, I suggest you get like Clinton Sparks and “Get Familiar.” Check out Wasted Days. I would be willing to bet most guys have felt the exact same way.

Comecem a pensar a respeito.

I refer to them as “Leftover Crack” (“man, you know there ain’t no such thing as leftover crack”), but they have many incarnations with some differing members: No Commercial Value, Choking Victim, Crackrocksteady Seven (w/ members of the ska band “the Gadjits”, Morning Glory, and most recently, Star****ing Hipsters (with members of ska band “The Slackers“, amongst others). I suppose that what I like about them, that set them apart from everyone else, is: the lyrics’ sense of humor and style, the combination of true hardcore street punk, metal, and ska, the use of violins and pianos, and their political stance. Here are some videos and images, Enjoy!

Just added these albums to the station:

The Aggrolites – Reggae Hit L.A.

Always thought the Aggrolites were an acquired taste, but this album didn’t have to grow on me. Great mix of good instrumentals and smooth soulful songs.

The Slackers – Peculiar

Alot of people thought this CD was a downturn for the Slackers, I disagreed. Alot of solid songs here and the Dylan remake is priceless.

Deal’s Gone Bad – The Ramblers

I plan on doing a review writeup on this CD. A band that never really made a blimp on my radar screen, I purchased their greatest hits album and I wasn’t impressed. They add a new singer and wow. This CD is fantastic and I can’t wait for their next album.

Enjoy!

2º show – COQUETEL ACAPULCO (RJ): Um show bem divertido.

Perhaps Ted Leo said it best.

But what happened to ska? It was such a big musical influence on me when I was growing up. I remember my first foray into the genre with a mixtape given to me (or taken from a friend, I don’t remember) by the name of California Ska Quake Vol. I. This tape had a collection of songs by bands that I didn’t know, but would soon come to love (notables including Dance Hall Crashers, Skankin’ Pickle, Hepcat, Let’s Go Bowling, and, of course, early No Doubt). I didn’t know what ska was. My brother at one point tried to convince me that when you translated ska into English (from what language?) it turned out to literally mean “Devil Music.” I was 7 or 8 years old, and I believed everything my brother told me (including the time he told me Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were hiding in the woods behind our house and that if I set and cleared the table for him, he’d take me down there to meet them). Anyways, this misconception of the term gave the genre perfect legitimacy in my eyes.

By the time I reached 6th grade I was perfectly ready for Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake to take my world by storm.

Many bands from the 90s ska/punk scene were soon to follow (Mustard Plug, The Suicide Machines, Against All Authority, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Mephiskapheles… really, too many to name). I became so enamored with the scene that I started going to shows whenever they came to town (when you’re in 7th and 8th grade, concerts cost a lot of money!) and started to become acquainted with the local Cincinnati ska scene. I became an avid follower of The Magnets (formerly Lee Harvey Skaswald), OB1, Scallywagon, Short Millie, and many others.

Then came the internet.

In the mid-90s, I only knew about the bands that toured around the Cincinnati area. I knew a lot about the current scene, as a result. Pop-punk and Ska was prevalent at this time. However, I had little to no knowledge of the backlog of music that went into forming the genre. I knew that The Specials were important, that Operation Ivy was to be bowed down to, and that The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were older than anybody gave them credit for.

Now that the internet and filesharing were commonplace, I had easy access to music information from older generations. I learned all about Desmond Dekker, The Skatalites, and really got to know The Specials on a much more personal level.

It was a good time to start working backwards, as the ska scene of the 90s began to deteriorate and the bands that stuck around started putting out worse and worse music, essentially becoming rock bands with horns (or sometimes forgoing horns all together). The upbeat was dead.

This, unfortunately, is the answer to the title question. The ska bands that survived sold out, and the jubilant nature of the scene was reduced to ashes, easily paving the way for the dreaded post-millenium emo scene. Some bands keep chugging along (The Slackers, for example), but the majority of those old 3rd wave mainstays have cashed in, sold out, or dropped off.

“This town is coming like a ghost town.”
