It’s quiet here.  Which I’m grateful for.  Thanksgiving Eve, and I’m just waiting for all the work bombs to drop before I can actually leave the office and get ready for some gluttony over Thanksgiving.

A weird story, an uplifting story, and a cool-ass Halloween costume for your Saturday pleasure:

**So we’ve written a few times in this space about Bree McMahon, the remarkable young soccer player from Orlando’s Freedom High School who had one leg amputated in a horrific accident at a school car wash fundraiser in September.

Well, if you need some more inspiration in your life, I highly recommend this latest column on Bree from the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi, who has been chronicling Bree’s recovery. This young woman has shown such remarkable courage and optimism through her ordeal, and now she’s finally been released from the hospital.

She’s already talking about how quickly she wants to play soccer again, once she gets a prosthetic leg. Such a great kid; the kind we all hope to have.

**The Smoking Gun delivers another glorious story to my inbox today. Let me introduce you to Kendra Clem, a 23-year-old woman who decided to steal from Intimate Apparel, a Kentucky store that sells, well, intimate apparel. Apparently Miss Clem decided to shoplift Monday night, and she did it while wearing only a hoodie and two pairs of stolen thongs (Why two? I wondered the same thing).

But alas, Miss Clem was apprehended, and the thongs were returned. Boy, I really hope the store doesn’t try to re-sell them.

***Finally, in honor of Halloween, perhaps the coolest costume of all time. Seriously, if this were around when I was a kid, I would’ve begged and pleaded for it. Watch to the end, it’s only 1 minute long.

You know you’ve done it. You’ve been in the store minding your own business browsing amongst the twinkies and tuna fish, only to be startled by this kid.

You can’t take it – you’ve had a very stressful day! It’s been an intense week at work, your boss is driving you up the wall to meet a deadline, and you simply want to quietly shop, buy your Preparation H, and go home!

But there’s this kid! He’s ruining what should be the perfect end-of-the-day shopping experience!

“Someone should do something,” you think as you begin fantasizing about running over to the kid, scooping him up, bending him over your knee, and giving him what his mother and father obviously weren’t good enough parents to give him - a good whipping.

You know you’ve done it … these thoughts have run through your head, and for most of us that’s all they’ve been – thoughts.

Today we meet a gentleman who breaks the mold. Simply thinking about it wasn’t good enough for him.

No, no. Today, we meet a man of action. A man who doesn’t just think about whipping other people’s children – a man who actually does it.

No longer will shopping centers be a place where fit-throwing children are given free reign. No longer will the infantile screams of the innocent go unpunished. No longer will parents be the only ones in the room screaming children will have to fear.

Busted for Slapping Stranger’s Child

Georgia Man, 61, threatened to “shut that baby up” at Walmart

SEPTEMBER 2–Meet Roger Stephens. The Georgia man, 61, was shopping Monday morning at a Walmart in Stone Mountain when he crossed paths with Sonya Matthews and her two-year-old daughter Paige. The child was crying, which apparently greatly perturbed Stephens. “If you don’t shut that baby up I will shut her up for you,” Stephens warned Matthews, according to a Gwinnett County Police Department report. Moments later, Stephens acted on his threat, slapping Paige “across the face approximately four or five times.” Though the child “started crying and screaming” after being struck, Stephens told Matthews, “See, I told you I would shut her up.” After police were summoned, Stephens told a cop that the child was crying “and he just slapped her,” according to the report. Stephens was arrested for felony cruelty to children and booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. Paige sustained “slight redness to the face,” but was otherwise unharmed.

Roger Stephens, you can expect your face to show up on late night television and on the internet for a long time.

I have to admit, as a father I read this story and thought about all the different types of choke holds I would have put this guy in had he even tried to do what he did to my child.

At the same time, I’m very interested in what type of day this fellow was having, and am curious what’s been going on in his life that would make him do something like that.

Anyway, crying children can sleep well tonight. The Babyslapper is going to the slammer.

Michael Jackson’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, has been formally charged with murder by the LAPD.

Here’s the story from The Smoking Gun:

“Lethal Levels” Of Drug Killed Jackson

AUGUST 24–A search warrant affidavit sworn by a Los Angeles detective provides a detailed account of the police probe into the death of Michael Jackson, whose doctor told cops that he had been treating the pop star’s insomnia by intravenously administering the powerful anesthetic propofol in the weeks before Jackson’s June 25 death. The affidavit of LAPD Detective Orlando Martinez was included in a search warrant application filed last month in Houston, Texas, where Dr. Conrad Murray maintained an office and a storage unit. A copy of Martinez’s affidavit, prepared last month, can be found below. Murray, reportedly the subject of a criminal probe stemming from Jackson’s death, told investigators that he “felt that Jackson may have been forming an addiction to” propofol, and tried to “wean Jackson off the drug.” The affidavit notes that Jackson “was very familiar with the drug and referred to it as his ‘milk.’” The affidavit also quotes an L.A. coroner’s official saying that preliminary toxicology results showed that “Jackson’s cause of death was due to lethal levels of propofol.” The coroner has classified Jackson’s death a homicide, according to a law enforcement source cited today by the Associated Press, which reported that the ruling makes it “more likely” that criminal charges will be filed against the 56-year-old Murray.

 Dr. Murray obviously played a role in Michael Jackson’s death, but does his action constitute a charge of murder?

Was Michael simply a victim, or should a certain level of responsibility rest with him as well?

I’m a bit torn on this one - what do you think?

This blog has featured Vital Choice Wild Seafood and Organics a couple of times. We’ve exposed the fact that this company promotes its products by attacking the competition. You know, the ‘ol “only eat wild, don’t eat farmed” rhetoric.

It’s obvious why – by attacking your largest competitor you can sell more of your product. Hey, it’s how politicians get elected and governments are formed!

But, someone the other day challenged us – do you have proof? So, we went looking…it didn’t take us long.

Here’s a quote from their website:

“Vital Choice contributes a portion of its net profits to the Weil Foundation, Raincoast Research Society, the Live Strong Foundation, The Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and other causes devoted to improving the health and well being of people and the planet that sustains us.”

So let us explain the significance of three of these “payouts” – and it ain’t because they improve the health of people and planet.

The Weil Foundation: Dr. Andrew Weil (Nutritionist for clients such as Oprah Winfrey) is paid to endorse Vital Choice products. Fair enough. Simply endorsing is one thing BUT this is the guy that appeared on Larry King Live in January of 2004 and pleaded for people to stay away from unhealthy foods which included pop, chips and…..farm-raised salmon. Come on Andrew, can you be any more obvious?

Raincoast Research Society: This Society is being paid by commercial fishing interest groups to attack farm-raised salmon. The latest study produced by this Society claimed up to 95% (the low number in the range was 9%, but no one uses that number!) of out-migrating juvenile salmon were perishing from farm produced sea lice (sea lice are found naturally on wild juvenile salmon by the way). The study was ripped apart by no less than twenty of the world’s leading fisheries scientists as a completely unfounded claim.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium: Ok, these guys produce the Seafood Watch pamphlets. So, MBA gives wild salmon a “green light” (the main product for Vital Choice) while it’s main competitor, farm-raised salmon, gets a “red light”. Vital Choice smiles and hands over the dough. A match made in heaven.

WARNING! All this back scratching is going to leave a mark.

Un recueil de conditions sine qua non à respecter, sous peine d’annulation de la représentation…

C’est là qu’un intervient le subterfuge du groupe. Pour vérifier que les hôtes des concerts avaient bien parcouru les contrats dans leur intégralité, Van Halen intégra une clause atypique : l’interdiction formelle de laisser les M&M’s marrons dans les saladiers de confiserie prévus dans les loges.

M&M’s marron dans les loges était alors synonyme de négligence de la part des organisateurs, rimant comme un risque de dysfonctionnement potentiel du show…

Noticed how many planes (read Airbus) are “going down” recently?

Between the Michael Jackson slimy dirge.

For starters read this:

Turnover in airport towers and at regional radar facilities and flight service centers is so rapid that experienced controllers are leaving faster than their replacements can be hired and certified. That means controllers still in training are often guiding planes on takeoff, in the air and on landing.

Meanwhile, a satellite-based air traffic management system, designed to automate more efficient flight paths, remains years off, even as current facilities are reaching and surpassing their expected useful lifespans.

Then all airlines are asking their employees to work for nothing. That’s a confidence booster if ever there was one.

We all know what they do to our Big Macs at McDonald’s when they don’t get paid. Or even when they do – get paid.

Finally – for today – Tony Tyler CEO of Cathay Pacific – arguably one of the world’s best airlines – says US airports are so outmoded and in such a state of chaos they are years behind the rest of the world. “I wouldn’t like to be managing any US airline these days,” said Tyler.

And he wasn’t talking about “in flight” service.

I learned several things watching the first part of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” reunion.

Oh, sorry. That wasn’t the legitimate reunion. But anyway, among the things that I learned:

1) Danielle’s real name is Drama.

It’s obvious to anyone who’s watched the show that Danielle Staub loves attention. Maybe she truly does get upset at the viciousness directed toward her, but it’s not entirely unprovoked. As Us Weekly points out today, Danielle aka Beverly Merrill aka Angela Minelli (Liza’s long-lost sister, I suppose) was arrested back in 1986 by the FBI for her participating in a kidnapping plot that developed out of a cocaine deal that went bad. She met her “boyfriend” at the time while working for an escort service. (Hence Teresa’s “prostitution whore” allegations.) Subsequently, Danielle/Beverly/Angela was charged with an assortment of felonies, including cocaine possession, narcotics conspiracy and extortion. She fared a lot better than her boyfriend, however: While he served 15 years in jail, Danielle/Beverly/Angela received five years’ probation and was ordered into a drug-treatment program.

That is a far cry from the story she told People just a couple weeks back.

“I was never a prostitute. Never,” Danielle said. “I was a pothead. Period.”

A liar, more like. Though I do like Teresa Giudice’s summation of Danielle:

“No, you’re just trying to make drama, Danielle,” she said during last night’s reunion. “Your name should be Drama. You say I’m Dina-ized. You’re Drama-ized.”

2) Teresa still doesn’t understand that throwing the word “gay” around is offensive to gays.

Take it from a gay man – Bravo’s own Andy Cohen – who clearly tired of Teresa’s repeated defense that gay people don’t find her juicy hubby Joe’s repeated use of the phrase “that’s/he’s/she’s gay” offensive.

“I think it was offensive,” Andy said yesterday, seconds after revealing that he himself was gay. “I do and I think a lot of people out there watching thought it was offensive.”

You think Teresa would just apologize and drop it. But no, she had to keep going.

“The night that that show aired we had a gay guy over…and he was cracking up,” she told Andy.” … He’s like, ‘Whoever takes offense to that, they’re stupid. … That’s what he said to me and he’s very gay!”

Yeah, ahum, right, Teresa.

3) Jacqueline is no longer friends with Danielle.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. After all, how long can you stay at odds with your in-laws?  (I have a feeling Kate Gosselin knows.) As if Jacqueline Laurita’s Bravo blog wasn’t enough of a hint, Us Weekly reports that any friendship the pair may once have shared is definitely kaput.

“I am not friends with Danielle,” Jacqueline, a new mother to a baby boy, tells Us. “She has never seen the baby, nor will I ever show her. I learned my family was right about her all along.”

Snap! I wonder when she found that out for sure. Did The Smoking Gun fax Jacqueline a copy of those damning court documents?

4) Dina plays fast and loose with facts.

I suppose we’ll never truly know if Dina Manzo actually ever *laid her hands on* “Cop Without a Badge” or whether her sister Caroline was just covering for her.  But when she chided Danielle for allowing her daughters to witness the heated confrontation about the tome, it took on a “people who live in glass houses” kind of tone.

“The content of the book itself is inappropriate,” Dina said during the reunion. (Ever notice how Dina frequently looks like she’s looking down her nose at people?) “I don’t talk to my daughter about prostitution or kidnapping.”

Well, yes, actually, Dina did. Right before Lexi left for Cyprus to visit her dad (and Dina’s ex-hubby), she regaled (or terrified, take your pick) her with tales of  vacationing American children being kidnapped and held for ransom by nasty foreigners.

And while Dina may not have discussed the oldest profession with her impressionable (and smart-mouthed) 13-year-old, she has no compunction about using the word t*ts to describe her daughter’s blossoming bosom. Classy.

5) Dina has an imaginary husband.

Apparently a lot of “Real Housewives” viewers have been wondering where Tommy Manzo has been hiding out. In last night’s reunion, Dina revealed that he didn’t want to be part of the show. Perhaps the reason why he didn’t want to be part of the show is because the last time he was featured on a reality show – VH1’s “My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding” – he didn’t come across too well (i.e. he acknowledged cheating on his future wife while they were dating… more than once).

When Andy Cohen asked Dina about Tommy, she said, ” He doesn’t really exist. No, he’s working all the time and we have very [little] time together. We have breakfast every morning together and we have date night every Thursday . . . We have the whole night to be boyfriend and girlfriend, so that’s our special time and we didn’t feel we needed cameras in our face.”

Wow, what a marriage this must be. No wonder Dina looks annoyed most of the time. Sure, she’s married to a richer-than-rich guy with a strong work ethic, but he’s barely ever home.  Given his admittedly poor track record in the fidelity department, how many times has she sat at home wondering where he is and who he’s with?

Don’t get me wrong. Date nights are a great idea. But if that’s all you ever have – and your husband recuses himself from any of the day-to-day realities of marriage – then you haven’t got much of a relationship.

6) Danielle is not who she portrays herself to be.

I was shocked (SHOCKED!) at the end of “The Last Supper” supplemental edition in which Danielle and her two daughters were shown waiting for their car in front of Lu Nello. It was like looking at a totally different person. Danielle was smoking and still raging about the incident and the injustice done to her by Dina. After seeing this scene, I began to wonder if this was actually the real Danielle.

Caroline confirmed my suspicions to People this week:  “The true Danielle is in those very last moments of that footage [from the final episode]. That is the true unfiltered Danielle, with that cigarette. And who is her audience? Her children. Making pizza and climbing a rock wall don’t make you a great parent. Her children are well-behaved, well-mannered and they excel in school. But if you look at her children, they have a haunted look in their eyes. These children are paying the price for her irresponsibility.”

What struck you most about “The Real Housewives” reunion? I don’t know about you, but I’m hoping part 2 – which airs tomorrow (that’s Thursday) at 9 p.m. – is a darn sight more entertaining.

A man waiting for a bus in Oklahoma City claimed he was punched in the face by a man who stole his bologna sandwich. According to the Associated Press yesterday, 24-year-old Roger Hamilton told police he was sitting on the bus bench ready to eat his sandwich when a man began staring at him. Before he knew it, Hamilton had a swollen, bloody lip, and the attacker had made off with the sandwich. The attacker has not been found, and the police report listed the value of the sandwich at 76 cents. What is interesting about this story is not the story itself, but the fact that the AP report was picked up by so many news sources, including AOL, Yahoo, and television and news stations. There are literally thousands of Internet news sources and this has made the news accessible to just about everyone, and the news comes out instantly. But is the theft of a 76 cent bologna really worth the news coverage that it got? The “cocaine-in-the-frozen-shark” story earlier in the week about a Mexican drug smuggling operation was national news because not only was it about the seizure of over a ton of cocaine, but it dealt with a major problem affecting both Mexico and the border states in the U.S. The oddness of the story just made it more newsworthy. It’s no doubt that the theft of a bologna sandwich is weird, but does it warrant the media attention? Framed in the context of the economic recession we are now facing, the story does deserve mention. But does Roger Hamilton deserve the requisite media attention, the talk show appearances and the million dollar book deal? And what about the other top stories flying through cyberspace at breakneck speed. The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office yesterday said a man damaged a toilet by setting off fireworks in an Arby’s restroom. The AP story was quickly picked up by all the major news outlets. As Delaware State Police investigate the damaged toilet, the Arby’s is being besieged by the media looking for more on the story, and money is being offered for any surveillance video. So far the man hasn’t been arrested, but he would be wise to turn himself in. The publicity would give him his 15 minutes of fame and maybe more. It was just a toilet, after all. How about the story released earlier in the week about Jacob Skipworth, a Berrien Springs, Michigan man facing felony charges after allegedly spitting on a police officer’s McDonald’s Egg McMuffin. Originally reported by the AP, the story immediately caught the media’s attention. According to the report, the unidentified officer bit into his sandwich and immediately realized something was wrong. The sandwich contained a “stringy with mucus” substance, according to the McDonald’s assistant manager. Skipworth, who turned out to be a parolee who spent 14 years in an Indiana prison, said he has nothing against the police. A witness, however, overheard him saying, “I got that cop good.” Skipworth is being held in the Berrien County Jail on $10,000 bond, charged with a “felony adulterated food count,” according to The Smoking Gun website. A June 23 preliminary hearing has been set, but in the meantime, Skipworth reportedly has retained a public relations firm to handle media requests. The Internet has changed the way we get our news. Newspapers and magazines are going bankrupt, but there’s no shortage of news. The Internet news sources are exploiting the advent of free or very cheap news content, and the overhead is next to nothing. The news comes out as it happens, instantly, and with little or no editorial oversight. And the weirder the better. While we are all stressed out about the current economic recession, we are comforted by news that makes us forget about our stock portfolio and our home mortgage. In this economy, the theft of a 76 cent bologna sandwich is major news, and thanks to the Internet, we hear about it as it happens. The “cocaine-in-the-frozen-shark” drug deal is already old news.

I gather this has been news for a little while now, but it’s just come back under my radar courtesy of some posting I did recently about Wine & Jazz. Thanks to the website The Smoking Gun, I spent some time this morning perusing Diana Krall’s rider requests (this is a document that artists send ahead detailing their requirements re: food, beverage, accommodations, etc.), and in particular a portion of the riderentitled “The Diana Krall Wine List.” I was impressed to find quite a sophisticated and detailed list of wines that Krall had approved for her backstage catering, and amidst all the specific selections, I was especially pleased to find the following:

Some hippie in North Carolina was arrested recently for stealing a few road construction barrels and turning them into the lovely monster pictured above.  I say the dude is most likely a hippie due to the mug shot that was attached to this story on the Smoking Gun and the fact that a lot of hippies live in NC.  I find it rather silly that he has been arrested for damaging a total of $360 woth of barrels.  Either way, the monster is really cool.

There are some people that mug shot fantastically, they are a lucky few. Most of the mug shots that I’ve seen make the person look like a drowned rat. And then there’s Phil Spector. After having been convict of murder earlier this year, Spector had to appear for his mug shot sans the wigs per state prison regulations.

All I can say is Wow.

Obama won’t be closing Guantanamo Bay after all.  His fellow Democrats today blocked the funds required to do so. The Pooffington Heist says, “Not to do so will further lower America’s image overseas.”

Obama won’t be releasing photos of hideous crimes including child rape and rampant sodomy against “suspected” terrorists by U.S. military personnel. “To do so would lower America’s image overseas,” is the reason. The Pooffington Heist says, “Not to do so will lower America’s image overseas even further.” And the photos will come out one way or the other.

Obama won’t allow criminal proceedings to be started against Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Powell, Wolfowitz, etc., accusing them of committing war crimes. The Pooffington Heist says, “Not to do so will further lower America’s image overseas.”

Obama won’t succeed in getting Israel to recognise Palestinians are people too and instead will continue to give the Jewish state billions to spend on sophisticated weapons to obliterate donkey-cart driving warriors using improvised unguided rckets.
