Viernes 27
The Sounds + Matt&Kim : La Riviera, 22€. 20:30h.
The Wave Pictures: Neu! Club, 14/18€. 21:00h
Depedro: Centro Cultural Federico Chueca, ¿Gratis?. 19:00h
Aaron Thomas: Sala Ramdall, 10€. 22:00h

Originally ran July 2009 in ENVY Magazine

The Sounds return

The Sounds are one of the hardest-working bands of the last five years. They have tapped into a raw vibe that has made singer Maja Ivarsson the life of the party. But don’t discount these boys—they know how to kick it up as well. ENVY spoke to bassist Felix Rodriguez about success and what their newest album, Crossing the Rubicon, is really about.

ENVY: Tell us about touring with No Doubt.
Felix Rodriguez: I think it’s going to be great—the combination of having us and No Doubt and Paramore, it’s going to be really good. It’s going to be a lot of energy, even in the audience and on stage. I respect them a lot; they have had a long career. They’ve never been afraid of trying new things.

How did the title Crossing The Rubicon originate?
Crossing the Rubicon—we’re at the point of no return. That’s where we were as the band. We weren’t as satisfied with our label and in the States… So we didn’t know what we were going to do, especially on our third album. Are we going to stay in this major label that we have in some territories? Or were we going to be free and doing it on our own, paying for it ourselves, and finding a new label? We talked about it and decided to do it on our own, and that’s why we came up with that title. Once you cross, you can’t go back.
Your second album started with a more polished sound. Does this new one go back to the sound of the first album?

When we wrote the first album, it was at a different time in our lives and now we think differently, so it’s a natural progression for a band. You’re definitely going to hear The Sounds. And in some songs, we’re going to surprise the fans in a different way [as far as their] ideas of how a song should be.

Do you think that your success as a band from Scandanavia has helped other bands from there have more crossover success, or vice versa?

I don’t know. I mean, when we first came out a few years ago, there was a lot of talk of all the Swedish bands, the Swedish invasion. There came a lot of bands, but those bands also only got to one level, and we kept coming back here, and our fanbase kept growing. I wouldn’t say that Swedish bands have helped us gain fans here in the U.S. Maybe they helped us at the beginning and we were there at that moment, when Swedish bands were hot. In Sweden, if we get a lot of press talking about how we’re making it in the U.S., that might make other Swedish bands want to come to the U.S. and play more. But maybe; I hope so. If we can help other bands, we would love that; it’s all about helping people.

I know that you, Felix, and Jesper were also writing songs for other bands.

There are a lot of songs outside and in the band. I can’t sit still, and he [Jesper] can’t stay still either, so we wrote a song for a big artist in Holland. It’s fun to write songs for people outside of your fanbase. It’s a great opportunity to get inspired.

You were just in Houston again. What do you like about coming back here?

We always have fun when we’re in Houston. We always seem to have fun with the crowd; for some reason, we always party with them … We tour so much we can’t really party everyday. But if there’s a house party in Houston, we always have fun, and we can definitely do that.

Is your single “No One Sleeps When I’m Awake” about you guys being the life of the party?
That song is a little about us, in a way. You do have dreams, dreams that you chase when you’re younger that you’re looking for. It’s about doing what you love to do, chasing the dream. We keep chasing our dream.

c’mon now – who doesn’t love to kick out the jams once in a while? i know i sure

c’mon now – who doesn’t love to kick out the jams once in a while? i know i sure do. and two of my favorite bands to rock the eff out to on occasion are THE SOUNDS and SONS AND DAUGHTERS. they are loud but not obnoxious – they are stylized minus the pretention. listen to them now, i say!

THE SOUNDS offer an 80s twinged new wave pop/rock hybrid of fabulousness that my fella and i somehow always find ourselves listening to while visiting his folks at lake okoboji, iowa. it’s fun, catchy, and if it was a color, it would be hot pink.

one of my favorite songs from their album dying to say this to you – “ego”

* * *

SONS AND DAUGHTERS are a scottish quartet who “have fashioned a distinct sound inspired by the melancholy storytelling of Lee Hazlewood, the lyricism of Leonard Cohen, and the raw power of country, blues, and folk filtered through their punk adolescence. “This Gift” develops this sound into a whirlwind of tarnished sixties glamour, referencing celebrity culture, cult films, and literary classics.” (via amazon)

this song (“gilt complex”) made me immediately buy the album from iTunes, and i have never regretted it. turn it up, bitches!

You’ve seen him on MTV’s The Real World. You’ve watched him on The Ruins. Chet Can

You’ve seen him on MTV’s The Real World. You’ve watched him on The Ruins. Chet Cannon is known for his exquisite style, his friendship with housemate Ryan, and his individualistic personality. Seriously, I’ve never met anyone like him before in my life. I was curious in getting to know Chet a little bit better just to see if he was anything like he was on show. In fact, he’s better!

Q: Alright Chet, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do, what’s your sign? Etc

Chet: Well, first off, Chet is my nickname. Chester is my real name…also the name of my Grandfather I might add. Sadly, Chester rhymes with molester…the kids at school had a field day with that. I’m still heartbroken. Right now, I am en route to LA. Well, actually, I’m headed to Boston tomorrow for a week, then back to SLC for Thanksgiving, then Louisiana, then NYC, then PA, then Baltimore all before December 6th….I guess you could say travel a fair amount. I have lots on my plate right now. I’ve been approached with ideas about new TV shows hosting gigs which influenced my trek from NYC to LA. Personal endeavors would include YouTube (which I hope to more consistent with), writing a children’s book, inventing a bowless bow tie, chewable water. In all seriousness, The Real World, for me, was like a small scale lottery….A lottery that can open many doors. Now, what you do when the doors are opened is entirely up to you. Mainly I’m just trying to hustle and stay focused. There is a lot of easy money with hosting parties and what have you, but I am more than happy to forgo a few of those in my pursuit for elevated status in the television industry. The end game for me is hosting a successful news show.

Q: Which do you prefer, being interviewed or doing the interviewing?

C: I’m impartial, to be honest. I guess it depends on the people I’m interviewing, you know? Sometimes you’ll get out there and throw the mic in someone’s face and instead of being unique, you receive some regurgitated, colorless rant. I enjoy spontaneity…people who can shoot the proverbial shit. When I happen upon those types, I enjoy conducting the interview.

Q: Chet, you happen to be one of my favorite Real Worlders ever. Just so you know, I don’t give out that title too often. You made a brief appearance on The Ruins, would you ever do it again? What was that experience like for you?

C: Well, thank you, my lady! You’re a peach. Yes…brevity would be an accurate description of my time on The Ruins. I loved it. The format, in terms of filming is a bit more enjoyable than Real World. There are so many people, so you can avoid the cameras if you feel the need. Never say never. I may do one again…depends on the location. Phuket….obviously I wasn’t going to turn that down. The Challenges aren’t a focus of mine at the moment, I will put it that way.

Q: Your friendship w/ Ryan and the song you guys made up in one of the early episodes. Inspiring. Are you guys still pretty close? How is he doing?

C: Ryan is doing very well. He called me just days ago from Iraq. Ryan and I have some projects in the works right now, which hopefully, will put both of us back on the tube…together.

Q: Your fashion sense is exquisite. Where do you prefer to shop and would you say you have more of a hipster or metro style?

C: Hipster or Metro….couldn’t tell you. My friends from back home laugh at the way I dress. They are the furthest thing from hipsters or metro. I will leave that up to you guys to decide. I really enjoy Ben Sherman and whenever I get a chance to visit SLC, I hit up the thrift stores. SLC has great, cheap thrift stores. You go to the thrift shop in NYC and the prices are comparable to those at Saks and Barneys…no joke.

Q: So are you still in Utah or have you relocated?

C: I stayed in NYC and only recently moved away, so I could pick up my car and make the trek to LA. I hope to get back to NYC soon.

Q: What’s a typical day for Chet Cannon?

C: That’s a tough one. They are so different. Yesterday, I filmed some video for my YouTube channel, worked out, edited video, worked on a children’s book I’m writing, and then went to a party downtown for the Nitro Circus movie…dancing the night away. It was brilliant. After that, some mates and I went hot tubbing and I arrived home at 3 AM, where I then edited video again until 4 AM. Tomorrow I hop on a flight to Boston. I enjoy the inconsistency.

Q: If you could interview anyone, who would it be?

C: Dead or alive? Let’s go with alive….hmm….maybe Pete Doherty. He is my favorite rocker/fashion icon.

Q: My favorite episode was when you had the chance to meet and interview one of my friend’s bands while on the show, Danger Radio. Had you been listening to them prior to the show as well? And also, what kind of music are you listening to these days that you think my readers should be listening to?

C: Cool guys. Love them. The Danger Radio interview was offered to me and at that point I began listening to them (in preparation)….grew to enjoy it….and then we had the interview. It was one of my favorites. I just made this really awesome “love songs” mix. I wish I could post a link to it. My favorite band is The Sounds. Easily. At the moment, I’m stoked on Fun and Foxy Shazam (Check them out). Amazing stage presence.

Q: There’s always talk that MTV’s editing portrays characters in a certain way for their audience to see them as. Do you feel as if you were portrayed correctly or incorrectly? Is Real World REALLY real?

C: You can’t deny anything that makes the air. I believe they will heighten aspects of your personality, but each person has a lot more depth. I’m not super bummed over my portrayal, but there are plenty of things I would have displaced with other moments from the 4 months in Brooklyn….had I been given the creative control.

Q: When I was younger, I used to want to be an MTV VJ, but first! I wanted to do Real World (like yourself) in hopes that it would lead me to becoming a VJ. This was before I knew TRL was going to be canceled. Do you think MTV has contributed in helping you get to where you are today or did Chet Cannon conquer the world all on his own?

C: VJ’s don’t exist anymore…haha. My stint on MTV has DEFINITELY given me more opportunities than I would have otherwise received. Is it possible to make it without a reality show….ABSOLUTELY. Reality TV can be scary. You have to be very calculated about your decisions….which is very difficult considering the frequency with which you are filmed.

Q: I’ve seen some of your YouTube videos on your blog featuring your covers, is there a singing career in the works? Maybe you and Ryan can get together and start something!

C: Singing is just for fun…I’m not opposed to playing with Ryan when he returns. I think we could form a pretty kick A duet.

Q: Jesse McCartney Pee Pee Hands story. Is it true?

C: Yes. It is true. Scott Herman and I walked into the bathroom and Jesse was on the phone, while peeing and didn’t wash his hands. IT was disheartening.

Q: What are you up to and where can we see you next Chet?

C: You will see me again soon. I hate to be the guy who says “it’s confidential,” but that’s how most of this stuff works. Mums the word.

The Sounds are a band from Sweden whose sound is rooted in a mix of punk rock and 80s pop, with driving guitars/bass, danceable beats and catchy keyboard lines and vocals. I can definitely hear the influence of The Cars (driving guitars, catchy keyboards…), along with Blondie and Kim Wilde.

Maja Ivarsson, photo from AfterEllen.com

The band totally looks like they could be from the 80s and the singer, Maja Ivarsson reminded me of Deborah Harry of Blondie, then I heard her sing. When the vocals kicked in I thought of British singer Kim Wilde right away. I will admit that the title of this tune, “Living In America” reminded me of “Kids In America” by Kim Wilde right off the bat, but I think she really sounds like her… a lot. So for fun, here is “Living In America,” released in 2002 by The Sounds and “Kids In America” from Kim Wilde, originally released in 1981.

No dia 31, além dos americanos do Hey Champ, a Funhell 1.5 recebe o duo Roots Rock Revolution, Rafael Urenha (Party Íntima), e as irmãs Marina e Helena Sasseron (Chicks in Charge).

HEY CHAMP

If you ever in your life have the opportunity to see The Sounds perform live, do the right thing and see them. So good. So much energy. So Swedish. Once again, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in my life. Shiny Toy Guns also put on a great performance, and Semi Precious Weapons, who I had never heard of, came out and shocked the hell out of a room full of strangers with their madness, I’ll be looking for more from those crazy guys in the future. Always nice to be in SF, I love the mountains, but the city is home away from home.

This was easily the best Halloween of my entire life. Attended the Sno-Ball in downtown Boulder to raise money and awareness for ovarian cancer on Friday evening and saw The Sounds play the most incredible show ever at the Ogden on Halloween night.

To say they played every song I wanted to hear would be an understatement. The audience was packed with superfans, all in costume, all singing along. It was a magical evening with four of my best college friends and I wish I could re-live it over and over again.

Happy Halloween.

hello, hello! how are you all? how was your weekend.. and how was your halloween?! let me star

hello, hello! how are you all? how was your weekend.. and how was your halloween?!

let me start out by saying this weekend could possibly be the worst weekend of the year thus far. at the same time, it could possibly be the best! so.. some good, some bad.

i have a lot to accomplish before i leave town wednesday morning, so i am going to make this weekend recap a tad on the snappy side

friday

i did not take a one food photo.. wait, i lied, i did show you guys my breakfast in my last post. but the rest of the day.. nope. nadda. nil. sorry.

friday after work i went to the gym and pumped out 20 minutes of HIIT, hurried and got ready and met up with some of my ladies.

we hit up california pizza kitchen and shared the avocado eggrolls & a tostada pizza before the concert.. no photos, i didn’t take my camera with me.

then it was off to the sounds concert and that was incredibly fantastic! except.. guess what? some chick bit me. um yeah.. i was trying to squeeze into a spot on the balcony.. this girl ripped my $75 watch from my wrist, it went flying.. no, never found it.. and she also bit. my. arm. who does that? it was crazy.

a couple photos from the concert~

saturday

happy halloween! marshall came over to my house and penelope and randy met my new roommate’s dog, yulek (a longhaired dachshund), for the first time. they all love each other.. so that rules.

marshall & i went to blue plate diner again..

spinach+mushroom+avocado omelette with dry wheat toast & hashbrowns

no, i did not eat this entire humungo plate of food. but i put a good dent in it!

it was such a nice day saturday! we sat outside

and then we proceeded to look for our halloween costume. and i got real frustrated and almost cried because i couldn’t find any of the components i needed for the costume i was plotting!

we were going to be peanut butter & jelly! but it didn’t work out. not at all.

so we were a plug and socket instead.

yeah. so nerdy. it was cheap and last minute and it worked

we went to my friend’s house and she fed us chili & cornbread.. which is one of her family traditions and she is carrying it on. love that.

photo time!

a lot of my friends were flappers/gangsters! and marshall and i were a plug and socket. ha.

and i spent the whole day cleaning my old house. i smell like bleach. it is gross.

when i got to my new house i had my last flavor of chobani to try out!
