I haven’t been updating this blog in a long while, basically because there has been nothing to update about. I’m still trying to write a decent query-letter, I’m still considering to go indie. I’m revising my manuscript everyday.

A few weeks ago I registered at authonomy.com, and will soon upload 10 000 words from my manuscript there.

Besides that I’m still struggling to get through with all my schoolwork and will have to wait for another vacation to start writing often again. I’m still to be found on my main blog (lindeay.wordpress.com)

I haven’t been updating this blog in a while, because there hasn’t been any news to post and I haven’t figured out something smart to say.

Soon I’ll update the prologue you can read on this site with a newer version, there are a few typos in the one up now, and there is always room for improvement anyway.

I’ll be back with something new as soon as I get something to blog about.

Image via Wikipedia

Well, right now I’m trying to start writing a query-letter and it’s hard. Now I’ve found several unanswered question I have to querying and I’ll try to cover them in this post.

I’m not sure if I’ll try to get an agent in the US or UK, as I’m most likely to move to Dublin next year and most likely to attend Trinity College and try to get a B.A. Degree in Ancient History and archeology.
Then I wonder if it would be wiser to try to get published in the UK/Ireland or the US. It would be easier to meet with agents or publishers in UK as I’m supposed to live there, but I feel like there is a bigger market in the US. Could I query both?
Maybe I have to reflect upon this question for a while.

Next question: I can’t make up my mind about what genre I will categorize my book to be in. As it has elements of Fantasy and it seems like anything can be a YA-novel. My manuscript human who lives with a vampire coven, it got a vampire king, it got werewolves and it got witches and wizards, but it is set in our world not in a parallel universe.
However, I’ve been told to query both agents who accept YA- and fantasy fiction. Now I’m wondering if I should present my manuscript as a fantasy, young adult crossover (if there is such a thing).

Do I really need an agent? Most sites implies that I need and agent to break into the business, but I’m such a control freak. I’m not sure if I can handle to let someone else handle and sell my manuscript. It’s okay that people points out wrongs here and typos there, but can I handle to let someone else handle the rights to my manuscript?
This is something that I need to put behind me, turn off my guard, or I won’t ever be published.

The lase question: how much time? Really, I don’t think I would like to spend 23 months editing and revising my manuscript. Well, changes had to me made, it have to go through copy-editing, but they can’t be serious when they say it takes 23 months? Within 23 months I can write the first draft to about 6 other manuscripts containing about 90 000 words (I’m saying that I used 4 months to write the first draft to The Tearing which contains about 91 000 words).
Due to what I read on several sites 23 months is the regular time a novel spends in editing.
So what I’m wondering: is there any way to speed up that process without affecting the end quality in a bad way?

I’ll need to do some more research to find the answer to my questions, I guess.

Music evoke feelings. In given periods I can use music to transform my feelings, I can put on a song and the next minute I’m can be filled with rage and madness, another song I can make me cry or feel happy. Music helps me understand feelings at the moment I need them, helps me to get deeper into what I’m writing.

For every chapter I write I carefully makes a play-list and the play-list helps me to write the story right and don’t get to carried away with putting in unnecessary things.

The most beautiful song I know is a Swedish Christmas song called Himlen i min famn sung by Carola. That song always makes me cry. And this song is pretty topical for what I’m writing too, for Christina’s feelings for her adopted daughter.

The Swedish version is prettier than the English one, maybe because I understand Swedish and don’t like the changes in the lyrics to make it sound better in English.

Today I did some more revising. It’s fun to see that I get less and less typos the further I get into the manuscript, that means I’m also progressing with my writing (and pay more attention to avoid typos).

A few words I keep getting wrong (and always get wrong) is:

I write wired instead of weird.

I write putted instead of put.

Sometimes i want to write runned instead of ran.

And a few times I hit the g-button instead of the f-button when I write “of” and “off.”

Now that I figured out what typos I mostly do I can pay more attention and try to avoid them. To help myself I’ve put up “post its” on my computer screen with my most frequently typos.

Hopefully I’ll do some revising on chapter 24 and 25 tomorrow. Right now it’s only 8 chapters left, which is both good and sad. Good because I’m soon done with going thorough the first draft. Bad because it means I’ll be closer to finish it, when you write something you enjoy it’s hard to put the work down, at least it’s like that for me.)

My prologue also need another look, as I know there are a few typos and weird sentences there. If everything goes according to plan I’ll upload a the next draft of the prologue in the end of this week.

The collision threw me up in the air; the wind grabbed me and dragged me several feet backwards before I fell to the ground. It didn’t hurt at all; not even crashing to the ground hurt me. The number one rule and tip in writing/revising/editing is to read it out loud. If what you’ve written don’t work when you read it out, it doesn’t work on the paper either. What happen if you break this rule? I’ll tell you. Think this scenario: You’ve written and published your first novel. Somewhere near by a little event is held and it wants debut writers to come and read a little sample of their work.
I’ve got a tip that’s right, every time. The number one rule and tip in writing/revising

I’ve got a tip that’s right, every time.

When you hear this you are head of heels, of course, you really want to attend and read. This is a great opportunity for free promotion, you are stupid if you turn it down.
The day arrive and you have done your preparations. People from all over town has attend the event to hear you and all the others read. Your mum is there, your dad. Inside your book you have put post-its to know where to start and stop reading.
The speaker announce its your turn, and you start reading. Then your tongue twists because a sentence is almost unpronounceable spiced with to many brilliant words. You stumble in the words as you try to make it right…

Another scenario: Your book is made into an audio book… Do I even have to start..?

Dream scenarios? Didn’t think so.
So this is what I’m doing now, reading my manuscript out loud to make it readable and remove/edit the parts that don’t works when it’s spoken.
Since 19Th March I’ve been working on translating my manuscript into English, late in July I finished. Right before I finished I started working on a movie script (which I still have great fun writing) and I decided to finish this script before starting on my next book script.

Movie scripts are quite different form book scripts as you are supposed to only write what you can see and hear. You don’t get as up, close and personal, with the characters, so now I really miss to write from inside a characters head. What I miss the most is to write from Fallon’s head (Main character in The Tearing). Luckily my next manuscript is another script with Fallon, as I hope to write a series.

It’s really weird when you think you are sick of something and really just can’t wait to get it over with, and then a week later you find yourself missing it like crazy. It’s a good thing I still have a long revising process on my first script as it would give me time say goodbye and get sick and tired of it for real.

Since I’m done with the first draft of my manuscript I’m now only revising it, which is a long process where I’m looking for plot holes small wrongs and typos. I’m so lucky that I actually have someone to help me, which is really great as it’s easy to be word-blind after working intense with a project for a while.

Revising is something I actually think of as fun, because of two things: 1) I’ve written a story that I, as in me as a reader, would love to read. 2) I can laugh at my typos and small wrongs.

Reason #1 is one important thing, at least I belive so. You have to like what you write to get a natural tone to it and it will make you enjoy the after work with it much more. While I attended a year of author studies I found it much easier to work with something I like rather than something which other people liked more.

Now when I’m only working on the revising process and not the writing process too, it’s also easier for me to “be a reader” of my own manuscript as I’m not working on two chapters at a time.

Today I’ve done some revising on chapter 8 and 9.

When I write I like to listen to music. Before a new chapter is started a new play-list is made. Music helps me to connect to the feelings I’m writing and it often helps me understand my characters more, as most of my characters is created ‘with a song’. Listening to that song helps me to connect with the character and see what’s on his or hers mind.

Music also helps me to keep the speed up. I’ve noticed that I write slower when I’m not listening to music or listen to the wrong song. A song with a fast rhythm makes me write faster than a ballad, a song with a meaningful lyrics gets me more into the writing that today’s brainless pop-music.

A song that inspired me to create one of my characters is Try by Nelly Furtado. This character is on that always does her best, but it’s never really good enough. She has lived for an eternity already but she still doesn’t think she knows what’s going on in the world, all she can do is to try to make everything better every time she makes a mess. At the same time that she knows all her wrongs she also accept them as she knows no one is perfect.

I started writing on The Tearing back in August 2008. Form the start I knew it would turn out as a full manuscript and not just a short story. Originally this manuscript was named “The midnight hunt” as I had already written the last chapter and it was a hunt in the end.
When I finished the rest of the manuscript it turned out that the last chapter wasn’t the last after all, and it didn’t happen at midnight. Then my name for it was lost and it took me a year to come up with a new one and this time I believe i hit the right button.

“The Tearing” was first finished 31st December 2009, but as a Norwegian version. In March (19Th) I decided after two rejection from Norwegian publishers to rewrite the whole manuscript and translate it into English. The story itself has a better float in English and most of the scenes was noted down in English in the first place. Translating was the easy part.

Right now my manuscript is on 91674 words, and i think that is a good amount of words, but the number will change +/- during revising.

Well that had nothing to do with what I’m writing, not really. But the last days I’ve been so busy writing in the movie script I started on, and it feels like that script is not letting me do anything else. I don’t even have time to bite my nails (I do sometimes have that bad habit). When I do research it’s like something inside my head is jumping up and down commanding: “Get back to the writing” or “Hey, don’t work on your book manuscript, mine is so much more important” or “Don’t write another blog entry, God damn it.”

Any way I did mange to finish my Epilogue today. So right now my book manuscript (The Tearing) has 293 pages. Now the fun part starts: revising, revising, read, revise, revise, write a pitch.

I have a book review and book recommendation coming up. Jess C. Scott has let me get another free copy of another book of hers to review: Business Plan: Building Brand Identity. And it’s great. Nonfiction, but it’s very useful and I’m already picking up tips from it. It have inspired me to start a blog for each of my biggest writing projects (At the time two: “The heavenly war“ and “The Tearing“. Last on mentioned is till under construction.)
And you can get a free copy of her newest book right now, Porcelain (e-book only), just visit her homepage (link above).

I’ll soon write a blog post about how it all began, what this manuscript is about etc.
Right now I’m about to start on the long revising work. In revising I have a very nice man to help me to sort things out and point out wrongs and I’m really grateful that he volunteered to help me in this possess.

It’s also about time for me to start writing a pitch and send out query letters. I won’t start to send out query letters until I’ve read through the whole manuscript at least one more time. But right now I can see that I’m progressing which gives me the boost to carry on working.

Yesterday (after midnight sometime), I finished chapter 22, finally. I have now written that chapter three times each time from another perspective). But the main character’s perspective is now written and done Just a few chapters left to go
I know I’ll write chapter 23 and 24 several times too, just to know what’s going on with everyone, and have a bigger perspective on what’s going on than from what I get from my main character.

It’s always great to finnish one chapter, it means I’m one chapter further toward my goal.
