i’m not a Crystal Castles fan, but for some reason, i am obsessed with this song. seriously, it’s like sonic euphoria for me. i wish i could get this in a tablet form.

i saw these Frenchies in Chicago two years ago. it was absolutely the biggest caricature of neo-hipster culture that i have ever witnessed. but i’m undeterred. i listen to this album at least 3 times a week. this album reminds me of riding the blue line home from work. back when times were a little more awesome than they are now.

Does It Offend You, Yeah? piqued my interest due to my appreciation for their name, and then my affinity for them sort of died off. and then at Lollapalooza ‘08, i got to Grant Park really early by myself one day and caught these guys’ noon performance. (seriously, this band is not meant to be seen at noon in 85 degree heat in August, but whatever). this song is utterly swoon-worthy. mega-hearts. again, this song reminds me of Chicago times. ::wistful sigh::

Matt and Kim look like they would be fun to be around. everytime i see videos, interviews, or pictures of them, they are smiling really genuine smiles. and i’m not gonna lie, this cheesy-synthy-dancey pop is infectious. eff the haters.

I’d just like to start off by noting that today is Saint Andrews day, for those who are unaware. He is the patron Saint of Scotland….and Greece, Ukraine, Russia and Romania nonetheless. But seeing as i’m Scottish i had planned on making a special Scottish artists themed Monday List. But i promised a moustache review last week so i’m sticking with that theme and i’ll get a Scottish artists post in before the end of the year, i’ll make sure it’s a big post too. That should more than make up for the delay in my promised Scottish themed post. As i’ve said many times before there is so much musical talent in this country, some heard and some unheard.

But on to this weeks list and a small review of my 5 days living with a moustache.

*NOTE* All entries on this weeks list will have their picture posted next to them. For facial hair comparison purposes more than anything else i suppose.

Before i begin the countdown i’ll clear something up for anyone who is offended by the exclusion of Freddie Mercury, i deliberately left him out because he is the King of Taches and would out-tache any contenders to the throne too easily.

At number one is the late Frank Zappa, known as much for his facial fuzz as his whacked out freaky jazz rock compositions. Number two is Spinal Tap and their bassist with the mostest Derek Smalls. Number three is the lanky gothic legend, the dapper devil himself, Nick Cave. Boogie-ing his way on in at number four is the actual Devil, Jess “The Devil” Hughes and his amazing ,sexual innuendo loving band the Eagles of Death Metal. At number five the psychedelic moustachioed Captain Beefheart. Number six? One of my favourite bands ever who just happen to contain the moustache sporting musical chameleon that is Jesse F Keeler. Sleazing they’re way in to number seven are The Teenagers (check out their remix of Mer Du Japon, it’s late night heaven), led by Quentin Delafon. Number eight are a band who at one point clearly got together and said lets ALL grow moustaches at the same time, The Beatles. Not their biggest fan but respect for the joint tache venture. Lagging in at number nine is Weezer and Rivers Cuomo’s  “different” period he went through when he decided to spring a moustache upon us all. Finally at number 10 is the frankly baffling attempt by The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers to be taken seriously. “Hey, look i have a tache!” Ok Brandon i can see that but that doesn’t mean your band will ever have more than one good album. We all know what one it is, Hot Fuss of course. But the lead single from their second effort promised so much more than was actually delivered and for that reason we’ll include “When You Were Young” and Brandon at the tail end of the Tache Masters list.

Pat Cantins song My Lovely Moustache is a gathering of chilled beats and fuzzy mellow bleeps and synth crackles that bring to mind a very stoned version of a certain Richard D James. As for the last track well it’s worth downloading and listening to for the title alone, “Grow Your Own Fucking Moustache, Asshole” indeed. If i was to attempt to describe the song i would be swayed to say “An Angry Hairy Lipped Man Singing About How His Lip Caterpillar Is Better Than Yours”. SUNDAY the 22nd: I officially join the Movember club and shave myself a strange breed of moustache/beard. I head round to Andys to see if he’s kept his part of the agreement. He has. He has a handlebar. I’m relieved. I’m not alone in Tacheland. Me, Andy, Chris and Ewan have all agreed to sport our own forms of facial fuzz for this week.

MONDAY the 23rd: My first day actually venturing outside my comfort zone with this thing on my face. As soon as i leave the house at 7am i feel the cold morning air stiffen my baldy chin, there’s usually a goatee of some sort there. It feels weird without it. I board the bus with my jacket pulled tightly over my mouth and lower part of my face before mumbling my required destination to the bus driver. He looks at me oddly and beckons me onboard. The rest of the journey is secure enough, the bus is pretty empty. I get to my work, take the expected YMCA jokes on the chin (pardon the pun) and open my toolbox.

TUESDAY the 24th: The morning is pretty much a repeat of the previous morning although this time a picture of Lemmy has been stuck to the side of my toolbox. My sister and niece come over to visit after work. My sister Lisa is adamant that she has to take pictures of this ghastly design on my face. She does so. 3 0r 4 times. I cringe in embarrassment for most until i get a picture taken with little Emily and even though i sport this ridiculous thing i can’t help but smile. The pictures from then on in are taken with me in funny/silly mode. Lisa insists she was only taking the pix so she could show Gary (my bro in law) but i know she showed all her friends! Revenge will be mine Lisa, be warned.

WEDNESDAY the 25th: I’ve now shaven off the Lemmy-esque side breezer bits of the mosutache beard and i’m down to an almost “normal” version of the handlebar. The journey to work somehow becomes even more awkward as i start to wonder why i’ve even bothered to do this. But an agreement is an agreement and i feel a bit less daft looking when Chris turns up at my place with his very own handlebar effort. I say effort because he’s tried to grow one but its a bit whispy and more like a set of whiskers than a moustache. But at least he’s kept his bumfluff effort unlike some! Andy shaved his off on the Sunday night, he basically only kept it on the Sunday to prove he’d done it then proceeded to shave it off  later that night thinking i’d never know! Cheat. His flatmate Joe stuck him in.

THURSDAY the 26th: My last day of Tache Torture! I’ve shaved off the handlebar bit now and its just a plain old moustache. According to my mum and sister i now resemble an exact replica of my father as a 24 year old. I don’t know whats worse, the fact that they said that or the fact that my dad grew one of these disaster taches out of choice back in the day! Work today is a lot easier, Ewan has returned from holiday and is true to his word. He has a moustache! Some of the friendly abuse is now directed at him. I’m secretly grateful to my shaggy haired friend for sparing me another day as the works focal point of jokes. I’ll buy him a pint later but only on the agreement that its a Guinness and he has to take a huge gulp so he gets a Guinness moustache. I get home on the Thursday and relax knowing that when the morning comes i can finally rid myself of this multi-coloured thing living below my nose.

Words fail me. I can only apologise for any long term damage done to anyone by the viewing of this picture.

FRIDAY the 27th: i rise at 6am and head straight to the bathroom. Hot water, shaving foam, BRAND NEW RAZOR and within 2 minutes it’s gone! I’m free. No more awkward bus journeys, no more “Alright Freddy Mercury” cries in work, no more itchy lip and no more patter from a certain person saying “You actually quite suit that Johnny” in the hope that i’ll keep it. I’m not falling for that one, you know who you are!

Today sees the release of the long awaited debut album from Canada´s leading italo-disco maestro CFCF. He has given us some wonderful remixes in the past, like the Crystal Castles remix that shot him to fame. He even made a shitty track by The Teenagers into my pick for best pop song of 2007.

However, the album is a bit disappointing, not for a lack of quality, but rather a lack of an album feel. We have heard many of the tracks before, on account of them having been released on compilations and ep´s, or just been gliding around the blogosphere. I think CFCF would have gotten more out of releasing the unreleased tracks as ep´s or 12″´s. As Jay Shockley in his Fact Magazine review said: “All signs pointed to ‘great’ with CFCF’s debut album [...] But instead, I got an instrumental record that often sounds very nice, but rarely achieves much beyond that.”
But if you see each song individually, this really is a great album, and I have chosen some highlights.

Teenagers - Reality Check

The Teenagers. Has there ever been a more evocative name for a pop band? Pop music owes its success to the obsessions of teenage fanatics who after its emergence in the 1950s dragged it through a thousand splintering sub-genres and into the laps of MTV executives and mega-brand-sponsored world tours.

When the come-down of the last World War forced parents to grant their children more freedoms than they had ever experienced, it coincided with the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and a new concept of youth. The story goes something like this: adolescent is given disposable income and a taste for 45s. Elvis is given a pair of hips so dangerous they could subvert a nation through a television screen. Pop music and teenager falls in love and they’ve been living a symbiotic relationship ever since.

So the Teenagers already have some living up to do, on name alone. Yet I suspect they’ve never let so much as a thought cross their mind about how iconic their existence actually is. They’re three gorgeous-looking scruff-bags from Paris via East London. The story goes that they stumbled across their own sussed version of danceable guitar-pop after posting a joke MySpace page. Their first friend request was from a girl called Nicole that they didn’t know. “Fuck Nicole”, they thought, and wrote a song called “Fuck Nicole”.

This self-deprecating wit is sprawled all over Reality Check, like favorite bands over a schoolgirl’s text book. Indie-cool and infectious, the Teenagers are dirty twenty-somethings masquerading, with fantasies of still being in their teens. With a tantalising grasp on the giddy highs and lows of adolescence and an obvious weak spot for the candy-pop drum machine and synths of ‘80s pop like “I Think We’re Alone Now”, they sound like a lo-fi New Order with three smutty Frenchmen on vocals. The influences on their MySpace page says it all: Sex, Love, Party, Vodka, Summer, Puberty, Red Bull. A statement of intent for most teenagers, it reads like a shopping list of ingredients for Reality Check.

Take, for example, the album’s first track, “Homecoming”. The filthiest slice of pop since Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg orgasmed through “Je T’aime Moi Non Plus”, “Homecoming” explores the memory of a sexual tryst through the eyes of an arrogant boy and naïve girl.  “Last week, I flew to San Diego to see my auntie”, he says in a dry monotone. “On day one, I met her hot step-daughter / She’s a cheerleader, she’s a virgin, and she’s really tan /… On day two, I fucked her, and it was wild / She’s such a slut”. And then, her version:

Ok, listen girls: I met the hottest guy ever.
Basically, as I was stepping out of my SUV,
I came face to face with my step-cousin or whatever, who cares?
Anyway, he was wearing skinny jeans, had funky hair
And the cutest British accent ever.
Straight away, I could tell he was a rocker
From his sexy attitude and the way he looked at me.
Mmm, he is totally awesome.
Oh my god, I think I’m in love.

What follows is the wildest chorus you will hear all year. Imagine Gainsbourg singing the first words, Kim Gordon the next: “I fucked my American cunt / I loved my English romance”. All this accompanied by an innocent summer-crisp beat, like Belle and Sebastian making out with The O.C. “Don’t forget to send me a friend request”, she says at the end, in what could be the first social networking reference in popular song. “As if”, comes the cutting reply.

It’s like John Waters reshot Grease with a Larry Clark script. The last time pop music seemed this subversive, Ice Cube was ranting about the police “Fuckin’ with me cuz I’m a teenager / With a little bit of gold and a pager”. If only we could get “Homecoming” to number one—it would be like a million teenage girls seeing Elvis’ grinding hips for the first time.

Most of the songs are delivered in the same sullen monotone, only allowing the choruses to fly along with the melody. The result is fascinating. It’s not just the lyrics, which move between melancholic reminiscing of drunken nights and bitter diatribes at ex-lovers. It’s the voyeuristic position it puts the listener in, like dipping into the pages of a secret diary. The prose is hardly Pinter, but the sentiment is instantly recognisable: secret crushes, embarrassing memories, summer innocence, mood swings, underage drinking, bored Sundays and wild Friday nights, putting the first band poster on your wall, slamming your bedroom door on arguments and telling the world you’re right, but secretly, bitterly, knowing that you might be wrong. “I don’t know anything / I don’t know anything / I don’t know anything,” the chorus to “III” repeats.

Of course, we’ve been here before. Pop stars recalling the rushes of their formative years is nothing new. Pulp produced fantastic observant pop music with a refreshing lyrical sting, and the Teenagers do not have the dexterical creativity of Jarvis Cocker. Yet the way they deliver a crushing harmony and then immediately slip back into that soft French accent is as infectious as anything by Franz Ferdinand or Bloc Party.

From the dreamy fan obsession of “Starlett Johansson” (“When I noticed for Jared Leto, I felt sad for 30 seconds / When I noticed for Josh Hartnett, I prayed for 40 nights”) to the skuzzy art-punk of “Fuck Nicole” and the delicious “Make it Happen” (which is begging to be added to the opening credits of the Breakfast Club), the Teenagers are Tiffany via Soulwax. They have a knowing appreciation of pop (à la Gwen Stefani), but with a sly cynicism and sassy attitude. The way their wispy accents make greasy sound like greezy on “Love No” is worth the album alone. That Reality Check draws it’s inspirations from the 80s, but also France’s über-cool Kitsuné and Ed Banger scenes (they are regular touring partners of Justice) shows that they have a Blondie-style ability to mix art, disco and pop.

Quite how the Teenagers have stumbled across themselves is an enigma. By rights they should be a fashion construct, carved out of teen-cool by Terry Richardson, stuck on the cover of Vice magazine, filmed by Gus Van Sant and sprayed across American Apparel adverts for the summer season.  With their too-cool-for-school, fashion-spread attitude, the Teenagers will annoy many people, but it’s been far too long since an indie band worthy of pinning them to your heart came along. Reality Checkwon’t change the world, but it will make the lives of new-found fans a little more special.

Like they say on “Feeling Better”: “Now that you’re a fan / You can write our name on your body / Take a pen / Write it down: ‘I love the Teenagers’”.

To the delight of her more local fans, Ladyhawke, or Pip Brown, will be returning to her home in the land of the long white cloud and Australian soil after she’s finished her tour in the US. Pip started off in a band called the Teenagers with  Syndey-sider, Nick Littlemore, but since she went solo and released her self titled debut album last year, she has been in high demand all over the world. Two weeks into being 20, I haven’t been overcome with any adult epiphany. Living on my own this summer made me realize that growing up sucks. Nine to five, bills, cooking and cleaning.

I liked it how it was. And I’m sure The Teenagers did too.

While their songs are laughable, they’re all about the memories and realism that exist between high school and college. They ask the important questions that you ponder at four in the morning when you’re up with your friends.

Are you really going to eat that pepperoni pizza? Would the world be dancing the same if Michael Jackson didn’t make music? What do you think about that cheerleader from San Diego?

So, if adolescent memories come begging, play some of these remixes and  ask yourself, “Who’s there for you when you’re cold and alone?”

Love the fact that this here Vandaveer vid is a “Lavomatik Session”. Also love how great they sound. Did I mention I heart them? ‘Cause I really really do. And just now, I sorta toyed with the idea of yellow hair.

“The Greatest” by Cat Power – I guess if I could describe what floating in water sounds like, this could be the song I choose. There’s something about the echoey vocals strewn through sad violins and a fading piano that allow this song to kidnap you for its entirety. With a touch of “Moon River” mixed with a little bit of Sarah McLachlan’s ”Last Dance”, this song will help you get where you wanna be.

I just love me some My Morning Jacket, especially their song “Wordless Chorus”. Let your mind go … no company necessary to assist in this drift, all you need is yourself.

Always reminded why Basement Jaxx is my most favorite in the world. But you already knew that! This song is exactly how I feel sometimes. Ok, I’m lying. A lot of the time. HA. It’s called “Feelings Gone” and it also features the fabulous Sam Sparro. Enjoy, loves.

The Teenagers “Homecoming” is so totally spot-on-reflective of today’s youngsters. It’s so cool to hear songs that are blunt and tell it like it is. But this song is fantastic even without the lyrics, but honestly, the facebook reference is classic.

OK, raise your hand if you remember ”Wild Horses” by The Sundays. Now, raise your hand if you remember “Wild Horses” by The Sundays ANNNNNND sang it at the top of your lungs in your room, car or wherever you were listening to it in secret whilst crying over some dummy who broke your heart. Yeah, I KNOW. I totally just brought it back.

Miike Snow, in my opinion, is a great dose of “awesome” when you need one. truthfully, why wouldn’t you want a dose of “awesome” EVERYDAY? If you don’t, you’re lame. But, still listen to these … if you listen, maybe you’ll change your mind and your lame situation. hehe …

“Cut Logic” by Miike Snow (I don’t know about you, but I find it amusing when people take random ass flicks – such as Rocky II – and put them to really rad music – such as “Cut Logic” -)

“Burial” by Miike Snow. Maaaaaaaaaan, do I love this vid. I don’t know if it’s the sincerity of the people in it or the realness of the kids dancing … it’s somethin’, though, ’cause I like it. A lot. So, what chu waiting for? Press play already! Oh, and the best line? “At your own burial, don’t forget to cry”.

Band of Horses “Is There a Ghost” is the kind of song I sometimes dream about. Excellent vocals by the man himself and lyrics we’re all  familiar with. And watching people get their ass beat with pillows is also pretty excellent.

Can’t go wrong with a side of Go Sailor once in a while. Here’s one of my favs “Together Forever in Love”. I almost used this song for the outtakes of a film I made in college buuuut, didn’t happen. Either way, this one is fun to dance to.

Je regarde parfois derrière moi. Si je dois en retenir quelque chose des deux dernières années, c’est que l’electro aura animé ce laps de temps, et que c’est terminée pour moi.

Je ne sais pas encore si c’est le vide musical que ce mouvement semble vivre en ce moment (avis personnel), ou la nuit parisienne qui souffre (voir comments de l’interview de Jean Nippon sur Brain Mag). Quoi qu’il en soit, ça me fait plus bander.

Mais il m’arrive encore d’écouter de bons sons, classiques ou pas. J’en ai en tête, ça tombe bien j’ai du temps pour faire un post ici.

Despite the optimistic message in their title, songs like “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” or “Relax, Take It Easy” make you wanna smash the speaker even if you’re in a good mood. And if you aren’t, well… But there’s plenty of “feel good” songs that you don’t hear on the radio every day. Everyone who’s into music has their own. Here’s a few I collected a while back. #5 SNOW PATROL – ASK ME HOW I AM

Mainstream radio stations remember them for their biggest international hit “Chasing Cars”, but there’s a lot more to Snow Patrol than one song and every alt-rock fan knows it. I discovered this one just recently, at the time I needed a song like this the most, actually. The lyrics aren’t too clear and they certainly don’t tell you to “be happy”, but there’s something hard to describe about this song that calms you down. Or me, at least. And haven’t you ever phoned somebody because you needed to, but secretly wished they wouldn’t pick up?

#3 LOSTPROPHETS – LAST TRAIN HOME

Album: Start Something
Year: 2004
Genre: Rock / Emo

If you really really hate emo, skip this one. But if you don’t bitch about everything that gets too trendy over night, give it a try. The bands just make the music, it’s the kids’ fault everybody hates this genre today. But I don’t and I hope neither do you. Let your sorrow fade away with the screaming chorus and be sure to catch the last train home.

#2 THE STREETS – STAY POSITIVE

Album: Original Pirate Material
Year: 2003
Genre: Rap

The most depressive and “rainy” out of this cheer-up list, but for me, the most important one. This song feels like waking up to a foggy, cloudy and cold morning after the worst evening of your life and still hoping that it was all just a fucking bad dream. In 6 minutes, Mike Skinner’s amazing lyrics take you through all the things you need to realize before you can even think about not feeling shit anymore. And also advise you to:

#1 THE BOUNCING SOULS – BETTER THINGS

Album: The Gold Record

An absolute winner. If anybody ever finds more optimistic song, be sure to let me know. One of the best tracks off their newest album, “The Gold Record”, simply tells us that we deserve to be happy after all we’ve been through, and that time has come. Add rocking guitars and a catchy chorus and you get the most effective musical cheer-up ever made. Even better as the original The Kinks’ version (which, although still pretty fucking good, it lacks the happy summer punk drive that makes you wanna jump around your room). I personally cannot imagine a morning coffee without this song since the first time I heard it.

Here’s hoping all the days ahead

Esta es la semana del Fuengirola Pop Weekend, desde mañana miércoles hasta el domingo 9 de agosto. La playa y el Castillo de Fuengirola (Málaga -ver mapa-) acogerán a un buen número de bandas de la escena indie nacional: Cooper, Airbag, The Right Ons, Cola Jet Set, Elastic Band, Bombones, Fortune Tellers, The Teenagers y The Mockers. Barcelona-based Delorean have just released a new EP entitled ‘Ayrton Senna,’ and the result is pure shiny summer bliss in the same vein as Cut Copy’s ‘Bright Like Neon Love,’ but with a perfect 2009 post-electro-overload shimmery feel. I’ve been a fan since their 06 and 07 releases, and their recent remix work for bands such as the Mystery Jets, Lemonade, and The Teenagers has been super on point, so it’s great to hear some new original tracks from the band. Pitchfork gave this new EP a ‘Best New Music’ designation, and I couldn’t agree more… don’t sleep on this one, these four tracks will help raise your energy in this crazy hot sweaty weather! Here’s my favorite song, and the amazing Teenagers remix, just in case you missed it the first time around:

Não. O texto a seguir não pretende discorrer sobre o grande piloto brasileiro, lenda da Fórmula 1 – quiçá, o melhor de todos os tempos. O intuito da vez é abordar o quarteto Delorean e o seu mais recente EP lançado, cujo título é ‘Ayrton Senna’.

Os guris do Delorean são de Barcelona; e não de Ibiza, que é considerada a capital mundial da balada. Mas o fato de serem da Catalunha, minimamente distante das Ilhas Baleares e um tanto quanto longe das grandes festas, não interferiu em nada no trabalhos dos catalães.

Só pra situar, os muchachos já produziram remixes para o trio parisiense The Teenagers, para os queridinhos power-pop de Londres The Mystery Jets, e para os americanos do Lemonade.

O BIGSTEREO, inclusive, afirmou que o som dos caras é essencial para os apaixonados por música. Enquanto o staff da Binary declarou publicamente que a vida é outra depois de ouvirem Delorean: ‘They do everything I would hope for in a record that sounds like this. They make me feel young, they make me want to go fall in love, and leave me singing the songs when I wake up the next morning.’

Después de lanzar el pasado año su primer disco llamado “Forty Love”, ese par de chavales de París que se hacen llamar Housse De Racket, vuelven con un interesante Ep con el nombre de “Synthetiseur”, y que trae mezclas de gente tan dispar como The Teenagers, Van She, Mixhell o ellos mismos en un alarde autobombo. Yo me quedo con la de The Teenagers, con los que habían compartido parte de la gira, y que por o que se puede escuchar han dejado de lado el Garage Band y se han currado una mezcla más que decente…
