The Transporter

This movie was recommended to me by my co-worker, Eric, whom I refer to as my “work husband”. I have termed him that due to the numerous inside jokes we share, we know we can be bluntly honest with each other, and we make a good productive team at work. Great person to ask for movie recommendations, right? WRONG. It was ridiculously cheesy for an action movie. While I thoroughly enjoyed looking at Jason Statham and his sculpted bare chest during the fight scenes, it wasn’t enough of a distraction to stop me from laughing at the sweater fight sequence and questioning why all the henchmen had pipes instead of guns. The plot was mediocre; I didn’t find myself engrossed in the movie as I so easily and often am, so I can’t help but feel disappointed in the movie and my work husband’s taste. I might watch Transporter 2 and 3, but for no other reason than to hope the main character continues to remove his clothing in order to put the smack-down on the bad guys.

Ryan’s Review: This is an auspicious start. The first pick is one of Candice’s: The Tr

Ryan’s Review:

This is an auspicious start. The first pick is one of Candice’s: The Transporter. I had already seen this movie twice, once in theaters and another on cable TV while stuck in a hotel. Once was honestly too much. As a guy, I SHOULD like this movie. There are car chases, guns, fight scenes, and hot models wearing skimpy clothing. It’s just like James Bond! Except that it’s not. Euro-trash electronic music makes for an obnoxious soundtrack, the fight scenes are laughable, and the models can’t act worth a darn (well they do have that in common with James Bond movies). A recurring theme I’m sure I’ll bring up repeatedly is that one of my first demands from a film is that it not insult my intelligence repeatedly. Once in awhile is OK, as my suspension of disbelief can handle that. It’s when repeated absurdities scroll across the screen that I start having trouble. Ten henchmen show up to take on our intrepid hero and not ONE of them has a gun? The best these guys can come up with is a crowbar? Seriously? Jason Statham (THE TRANSPORTER!!!!!) takes them all out with a sweater, a barrel of oil, and a pair of bike pedals. I can’t make this stuff up. The stunt guy and the prop guy must have gotten drunk together and had a conversation that went like this:

Prop guy: “I found this pair of bike pedals lying around. Let’s do something with them.”

Stunt Guy: “Let’s use them in a fight scene. We could add this barrel of oil to make it exciting.”

Prop Guy: “YES! And a sweater. Nothing is more exciting then a sweater.”

Stunt Guy: “Brilliant.”

Director: “And don’t forget to have some thumping electronic music in the background while the fight is happening.”

Unfortunately the above dialogue is actually on par or perhaps superior to that of the movie. Oh well.

I hadn’t decided how I was going to rate these movies but in honor of our first movie I shall pick the all encompassing one-world government currency: THE EURO. I think I’m going to give it 3 out of 10 for what it COULD have been.

The Transporter: €€€ (3/10)

I’ve never seen any of the Transporter movies so I just watched the trilogy for the first time. Most people think they’re pretty over the top, but whoever said that was a bad thing? Jason Statham is badass as usual and all 3 turned out to be really entertaining movies. I think the first one, by far was the best.

I haven’t done one of these in a while, but there so much fun so I’m about to start again. For those that don’t know how this works, I google blogsearch “Van Jones” and take a random sampling of the results and clip out important bits, as well as throw in some of my favorite bloggers’ thoughts. Here’s the blogosphere’s reaction to the resignation of former green jobs advisor, Van Jones:

DPGI- the aftermath

Just put Bush’s name in any of these stories – war, spending, personal associations, agenda, czars, “dictatorship” – and then, recall the panty-twisting furor of the Left from the past eight years. Kind of telling to see the sand in their crotch was Bush, not what Bush did because Obama is following Bush’s path in many ways.

Quipster

The special adviser for green jobs at the White House Council on Environmental Quality apparently believes that his past actions are being used as “lies and distortions,” and are not worthy of scrutiny for the special government position he enjoyed.

Citizens Against Pro-Obama Media Bias

They ranted on and on about the “birthers” and compared them to the “truthers” and lo and behold one of barry’s special advisors is a truther…to begin with.

The Transporter

Van Jones resigns as President Obamas green jobs czar. All I can think of to say is not soon enough, not soon enough. The president should check into the backgrounds of some people before he hires them to save the embarrassment.

Newsreal (I strongly recommend reading this article, it’s one of my favorites regarding Jones)

The point is not that President Obama will not tolerate people with Van Jones’ views to serve in his administration: he obviously will, because he did and he defended Jones to the bitter end. The point is Jones is becoming part of Obama’s increasingly familiar pattern: associate with radical leftists, give them as much power and prominence as possible in their own right, and disavow them only if they begin to hurt your ability to radicalize the system from within.

The Political Inquirer

One down a whole administration yet to go.

Citizen Obie

Van Jones made a mistake. Van Jones did and said some things I think he probably regrets. In fact, I know he does, because he said so. But where I see a mistake, Glenn Beck and the rightist bloggers who carried out this campaign saw an opportunity to tar and feather (and yes, that image is deliberate) the very symbol of the green jobs movement, and to characterize that movement, and by extension the presidency, as a communist cabal intent on imposing a reverse-racist tyranny on good Christian straight White Americans.

Betsy’s Page

How viciously sneaky of the right wing. They dared to use the man’s own words against him.

All American Blogger

I’m not saying I had anything to do with this, but I did write one heck of a blogosphere roundup on the matter.

California Conservative

Conservatives often joke that the Left’s definition of a dirty campaign is using their words against them. That seems to fit with Van Jones’ resignation letter.

Despite the fact that the MSM completely ignored the news of Van Jones’s past, the radical commie Green Jobs Czar has quit. And of course he’s blaming it on the folks who had the nerve to dig up his past. Not that it was hard.

The American people stood up and demanded answers. Instead of providing them, the Administration had Jones resign under cover of darkness. I continue to be amazed by the power of everyday Americans to initiate change in our government through honest questioning, and judging by the other radicals in the administration, I expect that questioning to continue for the foreseeable future.

An ex special forces soldier maintains his lifestyle by being a transporter. He’ll deliver any

An ex special forces soldier maintains his lifestyle by being a transporter. He’ll deliver anything, no questions asked but when he breaks his own rules and looks in a ‘package’ he gets caught up in a human smuggling ring.

Directed by – Corey Yuen

Written by – Luc Besson, Robert Mark Kamen

Starring – Jason Statham, Qi Shu, Matt Schulze, Francois Berleand, Ric Young, Doug Rand, Didier Saint Melin

Somehow my man-crush on Jason Statham hasn’t led me to watch The Transporter until now. I probably should have started here before watching the two sequels but better late than never right! Well, maybe not.

This wasn’t the best movie but delivers on the one thing I was looking for, Statham kicking everyone’s ass. The guy really is quite impressive in a fight and he has that cocky way about him that always reminds me of why I like Harrison Ford. They’ll both smirk their way through a fight, although Harrison Ford usually looks a little more happy as he does it.

The bus fight is a fun piece of film.

The plot of smuggling people isn’t deeply explored and even the bad guys aren’t really built up into much more than a shadowy villain that you know is getting punched, kicked and probably killed by the end. I watched a few of the extended fight scenes as well and I got the impression that the only reason there was a plot at all was to satisfy the ratings board and to break up action scenes. They didn’t want to have all the fighting clumped together where people may get bored with it. Quite the opposite for me, I couldn’t wait for the fight scenes and was mostly bored when the yapping started.

I liked the interaction between Jason Statham and Francois Berleand as Inspector Tarconi. The Inspector knows what’s going on but is willing to look the other way, as long as things don’t get out of hand. Of course they do get out of hand or it wouldn’t be much of a movie. Their moments on screen together are fun to watch and they play well off each other. The two of them are one of my favorite parts of this series.

Not the best first date but some people like that stuff.

I’m surprised they’ve made two sequels from this film. This one and one more would have been enough for me and I still prefer the second one of the trilogy. This one seemed a little less polished and a little less ’shiny’. It’s still alright for some good fun but if you’re not a fan of Statham, you’re probably not gonna like this one. It’s pointless action through and through and I only made it through on my love for anything Jason Statham.

Yeah, how’s that for a blog post on a movie review site! Makes no sense does it, but that’s okay. See, I haven’t gotten to post this weekend because I was so busy. Saturday I was at a wedding with a vegetarian meal, that’s why the weird title here. My dinner was a giant mushroom that was stuffed with little mushrooms. Good think I like mushrooms or I would’ve been very hungry that night.

The wedding was in London, ON so the two hour trip really sucked up all my time and energy. I also managed to get myself down to FanExpo for the last day of the convention. I haven’t missed it in the last few years and was really disappointed that I couldn’t take the kids down this year. Things always have a way of working out though and I managed to get down there. Unfortunately the kids have this intense fear of anything horror related and when I hit the Rue Morgue booth they broke down in tears because of the skeleton statues that were there. The very nice woman behind the counter tried to comfort them but to no avail. A free button later and they had calmed down a bit. Needless to say I didn’t get to head back into the horror area again. At least I got the latest issue of Rue Morgue though.

I scored some mini movie posters for Plan 9 From Outer Space and Bride of Frankenstein which are pretty much the first type of posters I’ve ever gotten. I have this weird urge to buy movie memorabilia lately and that will probably be the start of another out of control hobby. I just wish I could’ve found some pics of Vampira but I’ll have to accept the small painted picture of her that’s part of the Plan 9 poster. I’ll find some one day though!

That’s basically the breakdown for what’s been up with my weekend. I’ve got reviews for The Transporter (which I still hadn’t seen even after having seen the two sequels) and Drag Me To Hell. It looks like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory won this week for remake Monday so I’ll be working on that as well. So tomorrow should be a pretty busy day, I’ll give you the rundown of my day at FanExpo including my shots of the kids with the Stormtroopers, two new reviews and the return of Remake Monday. Man, my fingers hurt already!

There are legends, there are myths and then there is Jason Statham.

The star of action franchises like The Transporter and Crank appears to be an invincible powerhouse of tenacity, brute strength and homoerotic machismo that could fuel 10 Top Gun movies. Most people know of him as an actor, former footballer and a man’s man. There is, however, more. Much more, in fact.

Jason Statham, or "Statham."

According to official records, Jason Statham was born in London, England in 1972 to human parents. However, he is much more than human. Researchers from Southwest Florida College in Fort Myers, Fla. recently unearthed ancient records that nullify British documentation. An Aug. 13 excavation in the Republic of Cameroon by the scholars, leading researchers in Statham Sciences (the only institution in the world to offer the major) produced the first-known records of modern human beings, with one simply known as Statham. His status, elevated above modern homo sapien, is homo stathian, or “very human.”

The mythos of Statham reaches far back, beyond what his 36 years suggests, for his true life spans time and space. His so-called movies are stark portrayals of his real-life experiences; purported Hollywood special effects and writing mistaken for the reality that surrounds him.

Excerpts from the researchers’ article in scholar journal, Variety Magazine, listed below, were translated from a form of communications derived from stick figures depicting violence and strong sexual content:

Excerpts from Book XIV (estimated to take place in 2013):

Kirk Cameron and (Jason) Statham team up to save the world from Satan. Cameron resorts to prayer, while Statham simply kicks his face in and stabs cigarettes out on his eyeballs. Then Statham breaks Cameron’s neck for being a pussy.

During the pivotal fight with Satan, Statham would then do a slow-motion flying kick into Cameron’s head, causing it to immediately explode and propel his body into Satan’s body, causing Satan to explode. Statham would then flash his smirky smile while having sex with three women on top of the remains of Satan and Cameron.

Statham in the documentary, Death Race, chronicling his leadership regime of Statham.

Then Statham becomes our God and re-writes the Ten Commandments so there’s only one: don’t be a pussy. World peace is rapidly achieved, and there is only violence in the world when Statham feels like fighting ninjas and robots for practice in case of alien invasion.

(Statham) rewrites the commandments by breaking a crying child in half, claiming it was “too muck of a daft pussy to live.”

Excerpts from Book XXII (estimated to take place in 2019):

Six years have passed, with the world enjoying prosperity unlike what it has ever witnessed. Peace remains until a terminator with Arnold Schwartzenegger comes from the future, challenging Statham to a fight for the survival of the world. Statham says, “Let’s Crank this up.”

Statham bends the limits and physics of reality to his whim.

Arnold starts to say “I’ll be ba…” but is interrupted by Statham kicking his head off. Peace reigns supreme once more. Statham then rewards the world by inviting everyone to watch him banging Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz at the Colosseum, using the U.S. Constitution as a condom.

While engaging in such lovemaking, he shouts out numerous phrases altered from the condom to have the essence of Statham, including “We the People of the United States of Statham, in Order to fuck a more perfect Union!” and “No hot-ass bitch shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of Staham-grade fuckability, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States of Statham, and who shall not, when erected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which she shall be fucked silly.”

Book XXIII (estimated to take place in 2024):

Statham travels to New York City, now known as Fuck City, and renames the United Nations the United Stathams, with only one member – himself. As head of the Security Council, he then passes a binding resolution declaring “Statham rocks” before blow-torching the building and roundhouse-kicking its smoldering remains into dust, thereby making the resolution impossible to be repealed.

Statham, on his way to overtake the United Nations from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Excerpts from Book XXVI (estimated to take place in 2026):

Statham brings his influence to Washington D.C., taking over the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches by punching every single person in government once, causing simultaneous explosions. He then names the branches Statham, Statham and Statham, names Washington D.C. into Statham, District of Cock-Knocking and reforms the Washington Monument into the shape of his penis (adding material to it, of course).

He also simplifies the lyrics of the national anthem by replacing every couplet with “STATHAM! STATHAM!”, with the music simply being the main riff of “Master of Puppets” over and over again. The inaugural airing of the new anthem is played at the Lincoln Memorial, now renamed the Statham is Awesomeial (and the monument itself is now a statue of Statham fucking Megan Fox from behind), with AC/DC, Slayer and Queens of the Stone Age providing the musical backing while Statham yells the lyrics while greased-up and naked.

Cloned actress Megan Fox, reminiscing about her passionate and awesome lovemaking with Statham.

The footage is aired on every television station on Earth, now simply renamed Statham after Statham took over the U.N., annihilated Osama bin Laden by driving his Audi (from Transporter 3) headfirst into the Afghanistan mountains and fucked Kim-Jong Il in a non-gay expression of power until North Korea exploded in awesomeness. As Statham delivers the State of Statham, he points at the camera to accentuate every point, using quotes from his movies (“You know my fourth rule? Never make a promise you can’t keep,” “Who’s got my fucking strawberry tart?” and “You pair of sausage nigels! How do you sleep at night?”)

Excerpts from Book XXXII (estimated to take place in 2092):

The planet of Statham enters the most prosperous of times in its history. Interstellar threats are thwarted with Statham pointing his penis at the sky and yelling “Massive homo cunt!” He celebrates these many victories by fucking a Maxim hologram magazine movie star/celebrity from the Hot 100 list while the reunited androids of classic rock band System of the Down plays live in the background — one day hoping for their freedom, which may happen when Gabriel Yulaw (depicted in the sci-fi documentary The One by color talkie-film action star Jet Li) beams into the Statham is Awesomeial.

I’m interrupting my train of thought on SF for a moment to comment on the lack of imagination

I’m interrupting my train of thought on SF for a moment to comment on the lack of imagination in television and other continued adventures. You can add radio series, paperback series and comic-books to the contributors of unimaginative professions, though it is more specifically concerned with television. It comes as no surprise to realize that the occupations of most television characters fall into a pool which has remained rather static for decades.

The number of genres suitable or practical for television is small. Despite thirty years of experimentation (and sixty years of film history before that) the field remains remarkably limited: cowboys, cops, doctors, and soap operas.

David Gerrold, The World Of Star Trek

Adding reporters and lawyers to that list, and you will be hard pressed to think of any other profession that has had a foothold in popular culture. Postal workers are routinely shown, though could you imagine a series centering on the business of letter-sorting which would provide the requisite drama? I am, for the purpose of this post, ignoring comedy, which has marginalized and mocked jobs in a number of shows.

Yet there are jobs which remain largely unseen, and would provide all the interesting human drama which television now demands. Radio presenters haven’t been treated seriously in a serialized drama since Midnight Caller, yet if you look at the opportunities that present themselves with a talk radio presenter you will find more beneath the surface of the idea than is immediately obvious. Or maybe the thought of being inventive is beyond television these days…

What else are we missing out on, as channels gear their product to a narrower audience in the mad rush for ratings?

Drivers

The Transporter films have gone some way to give professional drivers representation in popular fiction, but there just isn’t enough focus on them. Films such as The Fast And The Furious series don’t really look at the driving component as much as they do on the culture surrounding illegal street racing, completely ignoring legal driving as a job. There’s really no reason that a continuing series couldn’t focus on a driver.

Consider the possibilities for a moment: A race in one episode, a chase around tight streets the next. Transporting vehicles across the country, driving a celebrity around, the crashes, the mistaken identity when he is assumed to be a car thief… There’s so many things that could add in to the motoring theme, and yet there isn’t a wave of television series based around the concept.

Gambling

I’ve tried my hardest to think of a series focused around a professional gambler, but come up empty-handed. There’s a bunch of great books about gambling and gamblers, yet there has yet to be a definitive television series about a gambler. This is one idea I would really like to see, despite the morally dubious nature of such a character, as there is a number of possibilities that come immediately to mind. I’m keeping my ideas on this for myself…

Magicians

Don’t mock… There was a time when characters such as Mandrake, Zatara and (one of my favorite comics) Dr. Spektor carved out a niche in the entertainment industry. Current representations have descended into mundanity (the Constantine film should have been so much better) or juvenile fantasy, ignoring the real opportunity to tell stories that no other character type could possibly get involved in.

The reticence on the part of producers may have something to do with perceived budget concerns, but clever directors don’t need big budgets. The endless rumors of a Dr. Strange film only adds to my annoyance that there isn’t a brave network executive willing to put out a show about a magician. Will someone get the hint? I’ve got a feeling that a successful film about a magician would be needed before we get a television series.

Spelunkers

I guess this could come under hobby, but a television series about an explorer could encompass horror (The Descent), tragedy (missing cavers) and even a quest for hidden loot. There is a wealth of stories which could easily be told with such a character, yet the airwaves are suspiciously free of anything remotely similar. So I guess we’re going to have to wait a while on a Cave Carson series… Don’t hold your breath.

I’ll let others add in their voices to this situation. What jobs do you want to see in television, and why do you believe they have the ability to hold a series together?

The boyfriend has two big man-crushes. The longest standing one is on the Gubernator, but currently

The boyfriend has two big man-crushes. The longest standing one is on the Gubernator, but currently the most prominent one is on the guy who’s already been anointed the new big action hero: Jason Statham. I’d seen a few of his movies b.BF. (Lock Stock, Snatch, The Italian Job), but with him I’ve also dived into some of his less… reputable flicks, most notably the Transporter, The Transporter 3, Death Race, The Bank Job and now Crank.

The odd thing is that Ah-nuld and Statham are quite different. I want to say they’re like the immovable object versus the unstoppable force, but that’s not quite right. The main difference is that while Arnold is strong and seemingly invulnerable, Statham is less imposing but incredibly kinetic. It’s no coincidence, I think, that so many of his films revolve around some kind of clock or count-town. While he always seems reluctant at first, once he starts going he’s always in motion, always racing. The scary thing about Schwarzenegger in the Terminator was that he was unrelenting: you could outrun him for a while, but he’d never stop coming. What scares Statham’s opponents is that you never see him coming, and you never know when he’s going to show up.

Of course, in these movies, the women are mere eye-candy, and depicted in rather stereotypical fashion. In these testosterone-driven action movies, the women are mainly there to provide the man with motivation, whether it’s revenge or (more often) rescue. The romantic interest the hero has in the girl is often quite limited, often enough: she’s there to affirm his heterosexuality, but too much sappiness would undo that.

Dismissing the depiction of these girls as “sexist”, however, is a little pointless. A much more interesting way to look at gender in these movies is to focus on the depictions of masculinity, and it’s in that respect that Statham is more interesting than Schwarzenegger. The latter, despite his “Mr. Universe” title and a tendency for shirtlessness, is never really presented as a sexual object. His muscles are a symbol, and maybe even envied by some, but I don’t think many women find Arnold attractive. Statham, however, is consistently depicted as desirable, and not just because he kicks ass: his body is lingered on, for instance when a hospital stay in Crank leads to several gratuitous shots of his ass, and when a fighting scene in The Transporter finds him covered from top to bottom in oil.

Transporter 3 is the movie in which this fetishization becomes most obvious, and when I was watching it I had the vain hope (for all of 5 minutes) that the movie was doing something truly transgressive: that it was openly admitting the objectification of its hero by emphasizing the “feminine gaze”. First, during a fight, we see Valentina (the Ukrainian girl Statham’s Frank Martin’s been saddled with) looking on lustily, especially after Martin takes off his jacket, then shirt, to use as a weapon – a signature move. Later, she steals his keys, and orders him to strip for her.

I was amazed by this scene, and in a good way: it’s not often (outside of an Axe-commercial) that you see a woman showing such focused, unapologetic lust. Women are supposed to get turned on because of words, specific actions, scent. Not over someone’s chest. What’s more, while Statham is annoyed at first, he goes along with it: the woman is the agent here, the man the passive participant.

Then of course, in the next scene, they’re all lovey dovey and he’s become her sworn protector.

Can I have a *yuck*? Thus, Transporter 3 went from being the potentially most transgressive and interesting film in the Statham oeuvre to just another second sequel, with action scenes not quite up to the simplicity of The Transporter or the outrageousness of Crank.

Speaking of Crank, I think I’m a little in love with that movie. It’s not good, far from it, but at’s least it’s never boring or lazy. Its style is crazy and very disjointed, but it’s visually inventive, consistently surprising, and it knows exactly how to use Statham’s coiled energy. It’s exciting, it’s over-the-top, it’s funny… and I can’t wait to see the sequel, which -I’ve heard- manages to take it up a notch, somehow. I’m almost tempted to check out Pathology the only other film by directing due Neveldine/Taylor. Almost.
