I’ve been meaning to write a post along these lines for a while, and with A Christmas Carol making Jim Carey a hot topic at the moment I thought I’d finally get on with it.

Most of the world know Jim Carrey for his “rubber-faced” antics (I swear that term was invented to describe him) and his over the top form of comedy which makes him a definite love-hate figure for a lot of people. Whether or not his particular style of comedy appeals to you, (and I’m slightly ashamed to say it does to me) you have to admit, he’s good at what he does. What interests me is that there tend to be moments in his films which belie a more serious talent behind all the funny voices and flailing limbs. I’m wondering if I’m the only one who thinks that maybe, just maybe, Jim Carrey is actually a pretty good actor.

My main evidence for this is The Truman Show. Carrey’s role is pretty serious throughout, with only a couple of his trademark gags. The rest of the performance is a really sincere portrayal of a man discovering everything in his world is a fabrication. I don’t want to ruin the movie for those who haven’t seen it (and I highly recommend you do) but the final scene in the boat is really well performed, and very held back for someone who is so renowned for being off the wall and out of control. In the gag reel to Liar Liar he picks up on his tendency to over-act, but it seems to me that the Jim Carrey we know is just part of the character, and if he’d chosen a different path, we might just know him as another good actor.

In recent years, it does seem that Carrey is trying to be taken more seriously, with films like Eternal Sunshine, which again is a very straight role for someone like him. He’s not always gone down well (The Number 23-oops) and he seems to be kind of stuck in this stereotype he’s created for himself. Perhaps that’s why he’s taken on a lot of voice over work recently, with Horton Hears a Who and A Christmas Carol.

I’m not saying Jim Carrey is one of the best actors of his generation, but I do think that people tend to overlook him because they think of him as a clown rather than an actor. I think films like Truman and Eternal Sunshine show that actually, he is a better actor than most give him credit for.

SANDESTIN — Capturing Southwest Airlines as the low-cost carrier at the new international airport is just the beginning of boosting Northwest Florida’s economy, local leaders said Thursday.

“The next decade is going to be our decade,” said Janet Watermeier, Bay County Economic Development Alliance executive director. “Never have the global opportunities for Northwest Florida been greater.”

During the second annual Fall Leadership Summit, a daylong conference in Sandestin, hundreds of businesspeople and local leaders talked about working together to grow the economy.

Southwest Airlines announced earlier this month its plans to begin serving the new Northwest Florida-Panama City International Airport in May. The decision remains the talk among leaders.

Southwest hopes to expand the Panhandle’s tourism industry exponentially by convincing people who might drive to Northwest Florida to fly instead, said keynote speaker Bob Montgomery, Southwest’s vice president of properties.

Southwest is known for its low airfare. Northwest Florida has some of the highest fares in the region, but those are expected to drop when Southwest begins selling tickets in December. Low prices create a demand and that means more people will come to Northwest Florida, Montgomery said.

Other carriers will consider the new airport, said Cynthia Kennedy, Walton Area Chamber of Commerce member.

Airport Executive Director Randy Curtis said plans for the airport include construction to accommodate cargo planes. The airport also hopes to draw international travelers, Curtis said.

“It will take the entire region to make it work,” said Jerry Ray, a St. Joe Co. vice president. “What Southwest does for us is provide a global network.”

St. Joe is the major property holder in Northwest Florida and a major partner with Southwest. The company agreed to repay Southwest should the airline lose money during the first three years of operation at the new airport.

Southwest looked at serving the entire region when the company chose Bay County’s new airport, Montgomery said. Talks with the other regional airports, such as the one in Pensacola, will continue, but Southwest plans to focus on Bay County, he said.

Keynote speaker Brian Wilson said the airport and Southwest offer a golden opportunity to the region. Wilson is a veteran reporter for Fox News and part-time area resident.

“I believe that this particular part of the Florida Panhandle is poised for great things in the not-so-distant future,” Wilson said. “This is the right place, and the right time is just around the corner. The world is about to beat a path to your door.”

A funny thing I heard on my way to The Red Bar,

A funny thing I heard on my way to The Red Bar,

“What do you call a lawyer who hangs out in restaurants?

                                                       An ambiance chaser”    ; }

Which nicely seques into our comments on one of our favorite local restaurants:

Garrett Realty Services Invites You to Experience:

Good Friends Good Food and Good Times at The Red Bar

My BFF since I was twelve years old is visiting from Germany and wanted authentic local atmosphere not to mention, food. I immediately thought of The Red Bar.

The first impression one has is that the vine covered restaurant has been there for a long time and deeply ensconced in the historical little town of Grayton Beach. The Red Bar’s eclectic Bohemian decor is artsy and creative and BOY are they ready for the Holidays. There is something interesting to look at in every square inch down to the international posters on the ceiling which patrons have contributed.

Needless to say, we LOVED the food. There were five of us so we ordered several different dishes for sampling. The Red Bar is famous for their Chicken Panne and Gulf-fresh seafood (especially the crab cakes). There is quite a selection of side orders: ranging from sweet potatoes, delightfully varied salads and freshly battered onion rings… YUM. The specials change daily and are quaintly hand-written on a large chalk board presented by the waitress.

My friends, Laura and and hubby Jerry, said their Shrimp PoBoywas the best they have had (and they are seasoned travelers). Laura also added that the bread was as good as she gets in Europe. That is quite the compliment.

The two important things Laura and I have in common are our tastes in food and laughing (We haggled over a few beaus but that is fodder for another blog!).

We had so much fun (of course we always do… that is why we are still friends after —?! zillion years) reminiscing about slumber parties and debating the best techniques for tormenting our little brothers. Some stories never get old…

A little Red Bar History 101:

The Red Bar is venerable. Belgian brothers, Olly and Phillipe Petit, have built The Red Bar from a former Grayton Grocery into one of the area’s most famous eateries. The restaurant is actually called Picolo’s, but the whole place is best known by the bar’s name, The Red Bar.

The Red Bar Jazz Band plays almost nightly and is the best in NW Florida featuring the great Jabbo Starke, formerly James Brown’s drummer who played in Sex Machine and Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag. When Starke is not at The Red Bar, he still performs all over the world.

The Red Bar has always been known for featuring the best in South Walton County music, first and foremost with the Great Red Bar Jazz Band but also with regular appearances from area favorites like Dread Clampitt, The Waco Ramblers and Hubba Hubba.

Don’t be surprised to spot celebrities here late at night. “…But please, everybody just wants to chill at The Red Bar.”

Located in the old part of Downtown Grayton Beach, Florida on Scenic 30-A, (Just down the road and west of Garrett Realty Services) The Red Bar is also a short drive from Destin & Panama City Beach.

Phone: 850-231-1008

Tudo isso me custou, pasmem: R$ 109,00.

O Dorminhoco (Sleeper, Woody Allen, 1973)

A Rosa Púrpura do Cairo (The Purple Rose of Cairo, Woody Allen, 1985)

The sight of the ocean again after spending 3 nights in Elizabeth’s hometown of Ware Shoals, n

The sight of the ocean again after spending 3 nights in Elizabeth’s hometown of Ware Shoals, north-west South Carolina was just what the girls needed to forget their troubles. Troubles, you ask? How can two road-tripping girls possibly have any troubles? Well, let it be explained. It can be quite stressful trying to calculate which bikini to wear to maximise skin exposure versus time spent in the sun. In all seriousness, it can take a fair amount of problem-solving expertise to determine where to have a stop-over in relation to where the next destination is – for the cheapest price. And it is hard to leave people… and places… behind.

Discussing the different mating calls of the Amazonian bird population.

So, in the late afternoon Ellie and Elizabeth arrived on the Outer Banks (OBX) of North Carolina with gusto, ready for some sun, sand and surf(ers/ing). They soon found the conveniently located campsite in Rodanthe, nestled between the North Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound to the east and west, a beer serving pizza place to the north, and to the south… a cemetery. The girls were willing to overlook this: 3 out of 4 ‘aint bad. Ominous grey clouds were hanging overhead but douse their soaring spirits it could not. They were determined to make the most of the coast. After pitching their tent the two strolled to the general store for an evening snack; Elizabeth decided on a Heineken beer while Ellie chose a push–pop ice cream and they trundled to the beach to consume their selections.

The next morning the girls were forcefully raised at an ungodly hour due to the blue sky and sun streaming though the mesh-roofed tent. Never ones to groan at a beautiful day, they bolted to the beach, excited by the weather makeover. Slothliness set in as they lay on the sand, filling their needy quotas for vitamin D. After being hopelessly spoiled by the warm bath water of the Gulf of Mexico, the girls found themselves screeching as they set foot into the icy liquids of the Atlantic. Ellie and Elizabeth stood ankle-deep in the breakers, forgetting they had legs for the numbness that had taken over, and gazed out into the wide blue yonder seeing the makings of some menacing clouds coming toward the OBX.

Elizabeth and Ellie, debating whether cupcakes are a sub-classification of muffins or not.

Not ones to whine about some cloud, they made the most of the sun while it shone so generously on their skin and collected shells on the beach like happy little clams.

Elizabeth, the forward thinking one of the two thought it a good idea to plan the evening’s entertainment in the event of a storm. It was decided the girls would go to the beer serving pizza place for dinner and rent a movie, which they would later watch when they retired to their humble material abode for the night.

At the BSPP (beer serving pizza place, for those playing at home) they enjoyed beer and pizzas on the eve of Ellie’s birthday and even managed to each receive a free beer from the young surfer behind the bar. He invited the two girls back to his house on the outer banks, and the girls decided to do what any other hip, cool 22-23yr olds on a road trip with no worries and cares would do. So they politely declined the offer to instead watch The Truman Show in the tent on Elizabeth’s Mac book.

“At your own peril, ladies.” The young surfer replied, with a genuine look of concern in his lust filled eyes. “There’s a big storm front coming our way…”

“Ahhh we can handle it!” Said the girls; wilting violets they were not.

Ellie and Elizabeth settled down in the cozy tent, blankets strewn across the tent floor, Mac book in between.

Interrupting Jim Carrey’s hilarious zealotry, Elizabeth arose from her comfortable mummy-like viewing position with alarm. ”Ahh my feet are wet!” Ellie, gallant in rescue, moved three inches to discover that the tent was leaking, from no other than quite a torrential downpour outside of their cloth fort.

The girls created a towel levee resembling the real life ones in New Orleans to stop the overflow of water so to continue with their movie.

Ten minutes later, if not less, a shocking flash of blue filled their vision momentarily. Before Ellie and Elizabeth could compute what it was, an ear-splitting crack filled their eardrums and beyond. This marked the start of the most frightening thunder and lightening display the girls had ever experienced. Due to precipitation patterns from the sound and the ocean on each side of the bank, storms frequently become trapped on the land.

They each exchanged a terrified glance and had a powwow; coming to the conclusion a relocation to the safe-haven of the Honda civic was the smartest move.

Strategically they decided Elizabeth should make the mad-dash first, for she would be the mighty transporter of the Mac book. Ellie would come in second, with the threat of exposing herself to the elements while undertaking the simple, yet dreadfully important task of tent-security (or as common-folk would say, zipping the tent up.)

Elizabeth unzipped the tent and exited from their comfortable yet slightly dewy quarters, making a merciless run for the car. Ellie followed in quick succession, possibly overwhelmed by the responsibility of security, and spent precious seconds fumbling with the zip.

When the girls were both in the warm surroundings of the indestructible Honda they exchanged some overwhelmed statements relating to their wetness of clothing. In the 5-metre distance from the tent to the car, they had become drenched to the bone from the endless supply of water coming from above.

They managed to finish the movie, and eventually the storm managed to pass. They exited the car and saw that the same guy who had asked them over for cocktails was walking their way.

“I told you coming to my house was a good idea.” He smirked, after taking a look at the disheveled, rain soaked pair.

With nothing witty to retort, they harrumphed and went back inside the tent, pleased with the tiny triumph of their working water levee. Their beds were dry.

Before sunrise on the Outer Banks.

The pair awoke early, too early on August 8, in their familiar twilight zone headed consciousness. No one should have to wake up at 5am on the anniversary of his or her birth. Yes, indeed it was Ellie’s 23rd. Birthday lover Elizabeth had a big surprise planned for the now same aged co-captain, but not before they drove through four more states to get to their intended destination later that day, New York, New York.

Stay vigilant, ye faithful followers. Limericks and anecdotes of Bagels and Chilidogs’ Big Apple adventures are sure to follow soon.

THIS IS THE LAST 100 THINGS POST!!! …at least for a while. I may just continue doing a “

THIS IS THE LAST 100 THINGS POST!!! …at least for a while. I may just continue doing a “twenty things that I . . .” post every now and then. It’s way fun.

OK. This collection of twenty things, in conclusion of my 100 random facts about me series, concerns movies.

God, I love movies.

I consider myself a cinephile, and I’m forcing myself to branch out and see things that I wouldn’t normally see (especially if the film contains suggestive material) simply because there are some great movies out there just waiting to be enjoyed! That’s why God gave us the Fast-Forward button the remote, right? Here, here!

So now the list. These twenty films extend from my childhood and into my present. Some are new. Some are really old. Some are just plain random. At any rate, these are the movies that I will want to watch for no reason at all, given that I have the proper amount of time free to enjoy a motion picture. I love these movies, and they love me back.

1. Say Anything.

You all knew this would be first. Say Anything is the movie that (1) made me love John Cusack, (2) made me love Peter Gabriel, and (3) made me love Cameron Crowe. Ever since this movie, Cameron Crowe has become my favorite director. I love his movies (even Singles and Vanilla Sky). I can’t get enough. He has a gift with showing humanity in simplicity and reality. You’ll find several other Crowe films on this list.

“I”m looking for a dare-to-be-great situation.”

—

“I gave her my heart. She gave me a pen.”

—

“Don’t be a guy. The world is full of guys. Be a man. Don’t be a guy.”

—

“This rain on my car is a baptism. My assault on the world begins now.”

—

2. Grosse Pointe Blank.

I think the reason I love this movie isn’t its 80s music or because John Cusack stars in it (well, OK. Maybe a little). What I love about this movie is its humor–it’s smart humor! John Cusack as a professional killer is a great way to make a movie simply because he doesn’t really seem the type to kill the president of Paraguay with a fork. Also, just like Say Anything, pens become meaningful.

“Where are all the good men dead–in the heart or in the head?”

—

“So what do you do for a living, Martin?”

“I’m a professional killer.”

“Oh, do you get dental with that?”

—

OF COURSE THIS IS ON MY LIST! I freaking love this movie. Stellar performances from Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, James Caan–my God! I honestly couldn’t move from my seat the first time I watched this. For nearly three hours of my life, I sat motionless, completely engrossed in the goings-on of the Corleone family.

“Don Corleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your home on the wedding day of your daughter. And may their first child be a masculine child.”

—

“Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”

—

“We go to the mattresses.”

—

~*~

4. Pride and Prejudice

Um. Duh. You all know how my affections for Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy force me to watch this movie over and over. I even like Kiera Knightley as Elizabeth. Seriously. When does that happen? It’s like Lois Lane–you always hate anyone who plays Lois Lane (partially because you really hate Lois Lane as a character) because they don’t seem to do it right. Well, Kiera Knightley does a fine job–perhaps due to the chemistry between her and Matthew. Oh, and I also downloaded the complete soundtrack from iTunes and listen to it in my car. I’m such a nerd.

“I can’t help thinking that at some point someone is going to produce a piglet and we’ll all have to chase it.”

—

“”I love you. Most ardently.”

—

“Well, if Jane does die, it will be a comfort to know she was in pursuit of Mr. Bingley.”

—

~*~

5. Donnie Darko

I still don’t think I’ve understood everything in this movie, and I don’t think I ever will. Nevertheless, I loved everything about this–the creep factor, the constant “What the hell’s going on?” and, ultimately, the happy/sad/what? ending. The ending reminded me of David Lynch’s Blue Velvet in theme–the bright, pretty face of suburbia is simply that–a face. Underneath is a seedy underbelly filled with all sorts of nastiness.

“First of all, Papa Smurf didn’t create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel’s evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario, it just couldn’t happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don’t even have… reproductive organs under those little, white pants. It’s just so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. You know, what’s the point of living… if you don’t have a dick?”

—

“Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?”

—

“28 days… 6 hours… 42 minutes… 12 seconds. That… is when the world… will end.”

—

“Donnie Darko? What the hell kind of name is that? It’s like some sort of superhero or something.”

“What makes you you think I’m not?”

—

WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE!

~*~

6. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Everything about all three of these films captures me every time I watch them. The cinematography, the writing, the direction–everything. My mom and I watch these movies every year at Christmas–one a day until Christmas Eve when we wrap up The Return of the King and then open presents, and I look forward to that tradition even in the summer! I can’t get enough. I find myself quoting these movies all the time–sometimes at appropriate intervals, others at completely random moments. <3

“Smaegol lied.”

—

“It comes in pints?! I’m getting one.”

—

“I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you!”

—

“A red sun rises. Blood has been spilt this night.”

—

“The stars are veiled.”

—

“For Frodo.”

—

“Go back to the shadow!”

—

“Arise! Arise, Riders of Theoden! Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day… a red day… ere the sun rises! Ride now! Ride! Ride to ruin and the world’s ending! Death!”

—

“Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”

—

“I am no man!”

—

“I know your face.”

—

“I’m glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things.”

—

“Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. How did it come to this?”

First of all, Lee Pace is INCREDIBLE. There is friendship, betrayal, death, rebirth–all of it! The storytelling, the beautiful cinematography, the adorable little girl all captured me as I watched this film unfold. If you haven’t seen this movie, SEE IT. Netflix, Blockbuster, Best Buy–however you can get your hands on this movie. It is beautiful.

I’ve always loved this movie, ever since I was a kid. My aunt and I would watch it all the time a couple of years before she died from brain cancer, and I still laugh at the same lines that I find myself quoting every now and then. This has to be Val Kilmer’s best film role–he really does a great Doc Holliday. Also, this is the only film where I can tolerate Bill Paxton.

This movie is so great on many levels: Rupert Grint’s excellent acting, Julie Walter’s superb personality, and the overall happy feeling I got from watching this movie. I enjoy British films, especially when they’re incredibly awkward (i.e. Robert Pattinson’s How To Be!!! Loved it in its awkwardness). Brilliant.

“You’re very angry, aren’t you? Don’t be. You’re still God’s gift. Every day God gives us a gift. What’s why we call it the present.”

I loved this movie, and I loved its book! Neil Gaiman is a superb writer. I’m loving everything of his that I’m reading. And this movie is pretty close to the book with only a few real changes. I can just watch this movie anytime, anywhere, and not get sick of it. Plus Ben Barnes makes a cameo appearance at the beginning, so that’s DEFININTELY a treat for me! =P Aaaand Robert De Niro as a homosexual pirate captain is simply fantastic.

This movie was so fun to watch! I think Brad Pitt earned a little bit more respect from me because of this movie. While the filming and action are all pretty great in this movie, the best part, in my opinion, are the quotes. Gut Ritchie is a pretty talented director, but his writers are the people responsible for the movie’s overall success. For example:

“My name is Turkish. Funny name for an Englishman, I know. My parents to be were on the same plane when it crashed. That’s how they met. They named me after the name of the plane. Not many people are named after a plane crash. That’s Tommy. He tells people he was named after a gun, but I know he was really named after a famous 19th century ballet dancer.”

—

“No, Tommy. There’s a gun in your trousers. What’s a gun doing in your trousers?”

“It’s for protection.”

“Protection from what” ‘Zee Germans’?”

HOLY COW THIS MOVIE’S INCREDIBLE. Aside from the fact that I’ll pretty much watch anything with Hugh Jackman, this movie really rocked my world.
Ah hahaha! I freaking love this movie for its 80s nostalgia and for Val Kilmer’s smartass badass persona. So great! And John Gries is awesome as Laslo (he later becomes Napoleon’s Uncle Rico!!). I watched this movie every time it came on television until I broke down and bought my own DVD. Every 80s-themed movie marathon must include this film. Must. Mandatory. Oh, and Val Kilmer’s shirt = I HAVE TO HAVE IT. It’s online somewhere, I just know it. Birthday *wink wink*???

Ed Harris is always great, in my book, but Jim Carrey really surprised me. I can’t imagine what it would be like to discover that the world you’ve known your entire life was built and constructed by one person in order to make a television show the first of its kind. I teach from this movie, and my students love it.

Oh, MAN! This has to be one of my top fave Depp movies. He’s fantastic, not to mention I don’t absolutely hate Leonardo DiCaprio in this movie (loved him in R+J, loved him in Titanic, haven’t really been a fan since). But this movie really ripped my heart out and showed it to me. Poor Gilbert. Poor everybody. The one part of the movie where I was a basket case was when Gilbert’s mother had to go to get Arthur, leaving the house to be seen for the first time in ages. And people whisper about her, stare at her–that really broke my heart. Gah! Freaking movies that make me cry!!!

—

“I love the sky. It’s so limitless.”

“It is big. It’s very big.”

“Big doesn’t even sum it up, right? That word big is so small.”

—

Two words: Tiny Dancer. That’s one of the biggest scene of any Hollywood film, and it belongs to Cameron Crowe, just like Lloyd Dobler and the radio over his head. How does he do it–how does he make incredible movies? Well, maybe that’s because his characters are just people. Maybe the plots are really sorta believable because they’re just people doing people things. I wonder how long these movies sit inside of his head until they come out to be worked and reworked until they’re masterpieces. I wonder. This movie is altogether incredible–one of my all time favorites (duh, it’s on this list). <333!!!

—

“I AM A GOLDEN GOD!”

“The only true currency in this bankrupt world… is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.”

“FECK YOU!”
“Well there it is, your sister used the ‘F’ word.”
“I think she said ‘feck.’”

What draws me to this movie? It certainly isn’t Brad Pitt, although he is exceptionally handsome in this movie (and shows his skill as well) because I was never influenced by his looks. It isn’t Anthony Hopkins, although he’s esteemed in Hollywood. I think it’s the multi-dimensional storytelling that takes place in the film–you have Anthony Hopkins’ character who faces death, Brad Pitt’s who is possessed by the Angel of Death, and the two sisters where (1) one receives favortism from their father in spite of her best efforts to receive approval, praise, and attention, and (2) the other’s feelings for Brad Pitt’s character who will take her father away on his birthday.

Yeah. That’s it.

—

“Love is passion, obsession, someone you can’t live without. If you don’t start with that, what are you going to end up with? Fall head over heels. I say find someone you can love like crazy and who’ll love you the same way back. And how do you find him? Forget your head and listen to your heart. I’m not hearing any heart. Run the risk, if you get hurt, you’ll come back. Because, the truth is there is no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love – well, you haven’t lived a life at all. You have to try. Because if you haven’t tried, you haven’t lived.”

THIS MOVIE IS SO B.A.!!! I really don’t care much about Matt Damon, but Jason Bourne is incredible. I love all three of these movies and sometimes really crave them. I was raised on action flicks, so the Bourne trilogy is accepted in my house. My mom, dad, and I always watch it together if one of us starts it. It’s funny–somehow all three of us migrate to the living room. The second movie, though, is my favorite of the three. As soon as Marie dies, he goes off the deep end and really gives Langley hell, and I love every minute of it!

I am completely fried and becoming more and more unreasonable and irritable and short tempered. I am so not suited to these workshop-style events. I hate everyone. And I find everyone slow and incompetent. And I hate being in this hot Truman Show City. The funniest thing of all, the CEO of this office asked me to breakfast and offered me the role of regional ecd of Asia. Huh ? And as if it were making ti more appealing to me, he listed the places, India (horror), Indonesia (typhoons and tsunamis), Vietnam (war), Bangkok (syphillis), China (dumplings and overpopulation), the Phillipines, Manila, Jakarta (oy) and if there were more I’m pleased I have forgotten them. Is he completely insane ? He goes on to tell me how wondeful it is to live here because you can have a house with a pool. Yeah right, and live in fear that if your child accidently spits out some gum he or she will get whipped in prison. I tried to imagine life in Singapore and the best I could come up with is it’s like Canada except you sweat 365 days a year. But he adds, the tax is only 20%. And I’m thinking I’d happily pay 30% more tax not to have to live here. And then comically he goes on to tell me they have theatre and arts here. Jesus I am living in this surreal mad house.I would rather be unemployed in hoboken than have to live in Singapore.

(Peter Weir, 1998)

September 17, 2009

by Joel Crary

For better or for worse, but I imagine mostly for worse, “The Truman Show” is probably regarded today as one of the most prophetic films released in the 1990’s. It didn’t introduce the concept of reality TV, but it pointed in the direction it could take if certain ethical concerns were left in the dust of network profit and ratings. Over the last 10 years prime time television has turned into a wasteland of everyday people doing increasingly ridiculous things for money. No one seems to have the slightest comprehension of what it can mean to have their very identity become a synonym for embarrassment.

A few weeks ago I wrote a column elsewhere about the American Dream, which George Carlin skewered so eloquently: “It’s called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.” These days every pop culture junkie believes they have a shot at fast and easy fame. Reality television exhibits a twisted perversion of the American Dream in which we do not realize our full potential but instead become widely associated with our deepest faults and insecurities. The camera loves a look of shame and regret on our masochistic faces. The viewers at home take a moral ground higher than any they’ve ever known, for at least they aren’t making fools of themselves nationwide.

The difference between Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) and the rest of reality television’s stars is his unwitting involvement in the production, which has been going on since before his birth and which he has gone about 30 years without recognizing. There have been small hints along the way, but if the world you’d known since birth more or less reliably behaved in a certain way, you wouldn’t notice the hints much either. What makes Truman begin to notice is the seemingly impossible reappearance of his father (Brian Delate), who capsized at sea when Truman was a boy. Bitter at the loss of his on-air role, his father – or rather, the actor playing his father – sneaks back onto the set while the production team scrambles to cover it up.

Unbeknownst to Truman, he is the world’s first son adopted by a corporation. The closest thing he really has to a father is the show’s creator, a Howard Hughes-esque artist known as Christof (Ed Harris), who directs the 24-hour-a-day show unseen from a control room located in the moon, which is fake. The sun is fake. The clouds are fake. Ditto the weather patterns, the streets, the entire city of Seahaven where Truman resides. Only Truman is real, according to Christof. In its 30th year, viewers around the world tune in to the show obsessively, leaving it on at night for comfort, secure in the proof that another person somewhere out there is living.

Director Peter Weir and screenwriter Andrew Niccol wisely refrain from taking a grander what-if route for the film’s first hour, whetting our appetites for select explanations from Christof in an exclusive interview. Harris’ performance is fundamental to the film’s success. Clad in a wealthy artisan’s garb, he gives direction as though he is conducting a symphony. Even God wasn’t so histrionic when He created the universe. When Truman comes to learn the truth of his circumstances, he battles the world he knows with all he has.

The film cleverly offers reasons for Truman to have stayed put all these years without overselling it. With an apple-cheeked wife (Laura Linney), a steady job, a sensible car and a best friend (Noah Emmerich) who always jumps on the perfect moment to grab a beer, Truman is one step away from living the American Dream before a light goes on inside of him. There’s great inspiration in watching a human being fight for a normal life; no matter how normal it may feel, it simply can’t exist on camera. Even the blasé tranquility of Seahaven, which has the feel of a small American suburban community circa the late 1950’s, can’t provide the tonic for Truman’s explorer spirit.

“The Truman Show” was Carrey’s first popular foray into more dramatic work after a string of films that revolved around his skill as a physical and rubber-faced comedian. He portrays Truman as a man who has indeed been coddled by his false society’s conventions. His manufactured tragedies are offset by manufactured pleasant surprises. Carrey dials down almost every reaction to suit a character who simply wants something different from what we’re all told we want. The producers can control how Truman is seen and perceived, with music that swells and angles that flatter, but they cannot control his heart and mind.

Ideally, that’s the precise reason why “The Truman Show” won’t become a fulfilled prophecy. People these days might act heartless (and more often mindless) for a television camera, but given the choice, no one likes to be kept in a bubble. It’s Truman’s reaction to the assault on his free will that ends his television coverage. “If he was absolutely determined to discover the truth,” Christof offers, “there’s no way we could prevent him.” These are words spoken ironically. Accurate as they are, no reality television producer would let the truth prevent the show we pay to see from airing.

(20)…new media represents a convergence of two separate historical trajectories: computing and media technologies.

I am reminded of the converging Negro and Amazon Rivers. These rivers converge and create a wonderful emergence of wildlife and environmental beauty.

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=39359&src=nha

Moreover, the convergence culture that Henry Jenkins speaks of in his book, Convergence Culture: Where old and New Media Collide, is extremely extended to emergence in Manovich’s text. the overall resounding premise that I believe Manovich is trying to get across is that the new media of today and the future will, is and has been an extension and evolution of previous media. That is a point which cannot be refuted, but what I felt as a sub-base theme through the Manovich text is a strong thread for how the new constructs of media will affect the consumers or users thereof.

(117) Just as there is no “innocent eye,” there is no pure computer.

As Manovich introduces this thought in his third chapter, he begins to generalize about how the growth or emergence of new media through the manipulation and configuration of old media will create new cultural filters. He calls these cultural filters “cultural interfaces.” These are, for a lack of a better term, new ways of organizing and utilizing data or information. If the “powers that be” who are constructing these new media interfaces are not focusing on human interaction and ethics, this could become a very messy situation. Jenkins said that “convergence occurs in the mind.” Well, if that is indeed true, then emergence must happen there as well. Nevertheless, Jenkins also emphasized a need for orality or talking in order for the convergency to flow smoothly. I would extend that thought to say that in order for this level of emergence or new media to occur, there needs to be a continued overlap of strong orality to completely facilitate the process. Without the orality or human connection, there is too much risk for unethical application or delivery of the new media.

(117-118) Software programs enable new media designers and artists to create new media objects - and at the same time, they act as yet another filter which shapes their imagination of what is possible to do with a computer.

Those of us, perhaps, who have not created with a computer in these kinds of ways before might have a very print perfect bias. In other words one might think, if it appears in black and white, it must be right. This chapter on the operations of media lets us all know that the computer and new media derived from it is an extension of human thought, which is flawed and imperfect. Therefore, it could and already has been used to control and manipulate other human beings. On page 146, Manovich speaks with such brilliance about how the Russian Government would entertain foreign guests by chauffeuring them through streets that were only facades or fake realities to mask the truth. Then I was reminded of a movie that I saw quite some time ago: The Truman Show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0rHH6LQdpI. This main character fights throughout the movie in a quest to find the truth while everyone around him participates in a show that he was never invited to attend (as a spectator, that is). This raises a serious question for us. How will these new media be regulated? How is it already beng used unethically? How have some regimes used this method in their intelligence practices? This thought is an old cry from our society. It has been an underlying theme throughout several decades in US history. However, I am not so worried about how the government is using it (new media) as much as I am worried about how the hackers, developers, and “emergers” of compositing and other techniques will, which leads me to my last point.

Fictional cinema, as we know it, is based upon lying to the viewer.

I take issue with this statement that Manovich raises. I do, however, realize that some fictional cinema creates a fictitious space for us, the consumer. On the other hand, if we continue with the premise that convergence and emergence can fully engage in the mind, then it really does not matter that the space does not completely exist. it may exist in some form, and it is creating existence in somone’s mind. This view is related to the television wars that I have in my brain on a consistant basis when I turn to BET (Black Entertainment Television), MTV (Music Television) or some other networks, and I see what this generation is exposed to on a daily basis. It is degrading. The bottom line is….through television and media of all sorts, developers, consumers, and distributers have an opportunity to create cultural interfaces. As media emerges and grows, those interfaces will do the same. The hope is that they will become more interactive, simulated or real. It would be nice if they could even be totally telepresent. Nonetheless, my cry is that the media we, as consumers and developers, use always have a theme that is edifying, uplifting, and ethical.

Take a look at the trailer for the number #1 grossing movie in America this week, I Can Do Bad All By Myself. It has some unrealistic moments, but it attempts to deliver a very realistic and positive view on certain individual’s life circumstances.

Sam – One of Jim Carrey’s first “serious” roles and he did it beautifully. This movie was pretty well done and was something that was revolutionary at the time. The Truman Show was released right as people were becoming aware as to how much reality television was taking over our lives and ultimately showed us what was not too far off. Showing an unsuspecting person’s life from birth to death 24/7. The film gets across that we are definitely a self destructive civilization and makes you feel a bit uncomfortable while sitting in a movie theater or say at a conference table watching this while working. Also released right around this time was Ed TV, a similar movie that showed an aware participant in a 24/7 reality TV show and how it affected his life and the lives of those around him. The fact that these two were released right around the same time just shows that the realization point for those of us captivated by reality TV came right around 1996, four years after The Real World had it’s first season and two years before Survivor began. Though we’re well aware how negative an effect reality TV has on us, its still one of the most profitable and popular forms of television out there. Just having to not pay actors and writers and set designers is going to keep reality TV well over traditional dramas and sitcoms for the foreseeable future. I assume a sequel to the Truman Show would be about the dangers of tweeting…

Tim – This film also stars Paul Giamatti back when he was a short, dumpy neurotic looking character actor, before he became a short, dumpy neurotic looking leading man.

Our newest nominee is PrimeSense, a device which enables your TV to see exactly who is watching it.

Our newest nominee is PrimeSense, a device which enables your TV to see exactly who is watching it. Repeat that slowly to yourself: a device, which enables your TV, via a set-top box, to see who is watching it. Is that not the most insane thing you’ve ever heard? It’s like Big Brother for everyone.

Geeks and inventors everywhere have been working tirelessly, hoping that their contribution to the development of futuristic television technology will be honoured with this esteemed prize. There’s a trophy and everything.

Every technology kid's dream

Our weekly voyages into the future of television have been pretty intense at times. But our most recent discovery is by far the strongest contender for the prestigious “Next Generation TV Show Craziest Thing of the Year Award”.

PrimeSense was on display this week at the CableLabs’ Innovation Showcase in Colorado, USA. The technology works through a chip inside a camera that plugs into the set-top box, but what it sees look more like thermal imaging than a clear detailed picture.

Though the image is not clear, the television will still be able tell how many people are watching and whether they are adults or children.

Watching TV

Panic over privacy

Of course online respondents have expressed major concern about issues of privacy in the home. On his blog, Open Source, Vlad Nedelcu makes the point that digital TV sets already keep track of every remote button pressed, but PrimeSense takes the concept a whole lot further. Personally, I like to dance to Beyonce music videos in my lounge and I imagine that the knowledge of something staring at me would definitely kill the vibe.

However, the idea is obviously exciting for TV networks, which could use PrimeSense to customise advertising and target content so much more effectively. Also, PrimeSense and other products that follow it could see the end of TV remote controls or keyboards.

Because the television set will be able to detect the presence of people it allows for the possibility of virtual touch interfaces, whereby viewers can interact with a menu as they would a touch screen, but from a distance. No more getting off the couch or lifting up sofa pillows to find the remote, brilliant.

The new technology is also good news for the gaming industry, as the PrimeSense website says, “making video games more immersive and fun to play by allowing users to play naturally using body movements and gestures” – Wii without the controls.

PrimeSense is ready to start mass production, with some undisclosed customers already in the pipeline.

I think I need to spend the weekend reading 1984 and watching The Truman Show.

Have you seen Doing Time on Maple Drive? There is a big chance you haven’t. It is a TV movie from 19

Have you seen Doing Time on Maple Drive? There is a big chance you haven’t. It is a TV movie from 1992 and it was the first time I saw Jim Carrey. Jim plays one of the leads as an alcoholic brother and it was a solid drama. Yep, I did not need to see the Truman Show before I could decide he was good at drama. In fact he was so good, it didn’t occur to me he was a comedian. Being much younger than Jim, I didn’t have the chance to follow his filmography in a chronological manner so it explains how I fell behind. And Dumb & Dumber did not appeal to me at all. Not my sense of funny. Ace Ventura was OK. But The Mask??? Oh my god- I love that movie. In fact I was shocked to realize it was the same guy!!! How could be so funny? Of course later I became a fan and realized he was essentially a comedian, having got to Hollywood from the stand-up performances in Canada.

After the Mask, I knew I was hooked to this guy’s performances. Liar Liar was brilliant, and so was Bruce Almighty. Me,myself and Irene- though a little-vulgar was insanely entertaining. Yesman was also typical Jim. Yeah, I haven’t mentioned the critically acclaimed The Truman Show,Majestic Man on the Moon or the cult hit Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I enjoyed Truman Show. It was bittersweet. Majestic was rather enjoyable and interesting. It portrayed the nightmare that is called reality shows so well. To be honest, the latter two bored me a little. It has nothing to do with Jim’s acting skills. But I don’t want to watch this guy in a drama!!! And especially not in depressing “romantic” stories or real-life stories (Eternal was about two lovers having their memories wiped out of each other-although I appreaciate the idea, I wouldn’t have wasted it on a bad break-up. And Man on the Moon was based on the life of Andy Kaufman.)

Don’t get me wrong. I like dramas. I do. If done well, they touch you, move you and make you feel alive. You find yourself thinking about them afterwards. It haunts you. But… There are so many good actors out there!!! There are so many actors who can make you feel like you were kicked in the gut. That can make you cry. Oh, Jim can make you cry too. The difference is while Jim can bring you to tears in a drama, he also has the amazing talent to make you cry because he makes you laugh so hard. Now, that is a much more scarce talent. I love laughing so hard that my muscles hurt, and Jim can do that. Not just with his movies. His appearances on talk shows are nothing short of hilarious and you got to admire how he comes up with a new persona/ show at movie award nights. He once dressed as a stoned, long-haired, bearded hippie biker and his own friends didn’t recognize him until he got to the stage to claim his award. There was a time he tried to french Will Smith. Once he thanked himself for the award:

Jim!! (he gets off the stage.)

Yeah?

(he gets on the stage again) I couldn’t have done this without you buddy!!!

I love this handsome and utterly funny Canadian. Boy, I really felt like watching one his movies now!

Parsimonia (o avarizia?)

Scarsa attenzione (o indifferenza? leggi menefreghismo)

Possessività (o insicurezza?)

Concretezza (o mancanza di fantasia?)

Tradizione (o bigottismo?)

Egoismo (o cinismo?)

In una parola me. E non so perché ci sta riuscendo.

Io non mi trovo più.

Philip Glass is one of the most renowned music composers of the modern era, having composed for many films, theatre dramas and operas. He won the Golden Globe for the best score for his fantastic Truman Show soundtrack, and has been nominated for 3 Oscars for the best original score. His career has spanned 5 decades and his work, which has often been dubbed minimalistic, has influenced some of the greatest modern day musicians like David Bowie and Brian Eno. He has even collaborated with Aphex twin. So for all of the above and more, I wanted to share 3 tracks by the man for your ears.

Enjoy.
