Just when you are already on the edge of convincing yourself that the world is becoming an annoying

Just when you are already on the edge of convincing yourself that the world is becoming an annoying habitat, you happened to watch Batista, The Edge, The Undertaker and other big guys in the TV fighting in and out the ring, almost naked. Then the bells ring and the wrestlers are happily saving the world.

Sorry Powerpuff Girls, the wrestlers are willing enough to save the day. And if you’re thinking they don’t have the chemical X to make them fly and fight the monsters for them to be labeled as “superheroes”, technically, they are still superheroes because they are proudly appearing in public with just their underwear on (like Batman and Superman). Here are my theories why wrestlers could save the world:

*Because we have problems regarding the world’s higher oil demand and some factories that manufacture clothes offer higher prices for the cost of the production because they are consuming oil for their machines, majority of the wrestlers refuse to wear any clothing except their underwear. By just wearing underwear, they are encouraging their fans to shop less, which leads to lower production of clothing manufacturers and less consumption of oil. (I am unsympathetic right now, no to shopping as of this moment)

*Wrestlers inflict violence against their enemies without getting them killed (even when they are jumping on each other’s heads and swinging chairs on their faces)- a good influence to terrorists to promote torture against their enemies and not totally killing them. Thus, there will be no more deaths in the world.

*Wrestlers motivate people to eat and take care of their body. Strong and healthy people can build a strong nation. Wrestlers make other people realize that you don’t have to be skinny to be famous. Therefore, there will be no dinner bell to be ignored by people who are considered victims of fashion TV (and other porn videos promoting that sex is only for the skinny girls and lean men).

*Wrestlers teach the world to fight for love- that women are worth fighting for in front of hundreds of people. Thus, the world will be free from acts of cruelty.

Imagine the world becoming a nice place to live in, where people are only wearing their underwear and the terrorists are too busy watching the wrestlers and enjoying their gym equipment for them to make bombs and become suicide bombers. Imagine the no-longer-violent-men buying farm bells to bring back good old memories instead of buying high powered guns and grenades to mark tragic scenes. To all the wrestlers, thank you for saving the world.

PS
You are the reason why I am writing with just my underwear right now. I love the violence.

The John Report: Talking Smack for 11/27/09 (Undertaker vs. Jericho II)

Taped from Bridgeport, CT let’s talk some smack…

We started off with the best in the world, Chris Jericho. Never a bad way to start the show. He cut a vintage (yeah I said it) Jericho promo talking about how he should be the number one contender to the World title and also that TLC matches are the most dangerous in WWE. I guess we should forget that a month ago they told us Hell in a Cell matches were the most dangerous. And we’ll forget it again February when they tell us Elimination Chamber matches are the most dangerous. He mentioned being in two of the eight TLC matches saying that he won one (with Benoit in 2001, but they can’t say his name of course). He was also in the TLC match with Christian on Raw in 2002 that Kane and Hurricane won even though Hurricane was “injured” in the match. Man, I went off on a tangent. Like usual, this was an excellent promo. He’s the best talker in the company with CM Punk in a close second. Anyway, Teddy Long came out to say Jericho will wrestle the Undertaker later in the night in a non-title match.

The Hart Dynasty d. Cryme Tyme (*1/2)
This again? I love the Hart Dynasty and I think Cryme Tyme’s fine for what they do, but this match has been done too much this year. If they were revolutionizing the tag division like E&C vs. Matt & Jeff then by all means put it on every week. They’re not, though. It’s just another tag match for a company that lacks real tag teams. The Hart Dynasty is one of the most underutilized commodities in all of WWE right now. They could be doing so much more.

They went to Teddy’s office for some bad acting with John Morrison. They have absolutely no chemistry. At least they didn’t sing Michael Jackson songs this time. Vickie came in with Eric Escobar. Morrison said he needs a better catchphrase than calling himself Essssscobar. Is it a catchphrase when you just exaggerate one letter? I don’t think so. She wants Eric to get a title shot. Teddy says no, then she threatens to call Vince and Teddy gives Eric a title shot against Morrison.

CM Punk came out next with an unidentified big guy. He explained that sometimes people overdo drugs and need help, just like the guy he was with. It was Festus, now known as Luke Gallows. I’m not sure about the new name, but I’m glad they dumped the terrible “ring the bell” gimmick. This storyline had been rumored to happen for a while now. Is it the best way to forget about the stupid gimmick? Maybe not, but I’m at the point where I’m happy it happened because I think Luke/Festus actually has good potential as a big man heel. Punk went on this rant saying that on Tuesday something would be released that was dangerous, the Jeff Hardy DVD. What a creative way to plug a DVD for somebody that doesn’t work for WWE anymore. He said to watch the last chapter, which was the cage match that saw Punk force Jeff to leave WWE. The Summerslam match is better, for the record. This brought out a jobber. Oh wait, it’s Matt Hardy. Same thing. Matt defends his brother and said if Punk stopped worrying about everybody else he wouldn’t be a former World Champion. Kids, that’s how you talk trash if you’re a ten year WWE employee that loses more than he wins. This set up a match.

Matt Hardy d. CM Punk via DQ (*3/4)
This was a predictable match that saw Hardy hit the Twist of Fate leading to the DQ finish after Gallows attacked him. They got about five minutes or so before the finish. I was thinking that R-Truth would come out here to save Matt since he was feuding with Punk, but no sign of him. They beat up Matt after the match with Gallows hitting some power moves. I think this pairing will work well because Punk can be that type of heel that talks a lot of stuff, but relies on his bodyguard to protect him. Hopefully they don’t break them up too soon like WWE tends to do.

My beloved Mickie James-Canton did an interview backstage saying she’s not leaving Smackdown despite the tactics of Michelle McTaker and Layla. I should point out too that I find Mickie to be even more attractive with the dark brown hair. Being on TV for only 30 seconds isn’t enough for me, though. I need my Mickie fix.

Batista d. Kane via countout (*1/2)
On the list of matches that I don’t need to see ever again, Batista vs. Kane is up there. This was pretty sloppy. They tried hard and they gave them 15 minutes, but this is one of those matches that needed to be under ten minutes. The finish they did saw Batista beat Kane by DQ after attacking his knee on the floor. That seems to be his new patented move. The Ric Flair like chopping of the back of the leg. I’m surprised that they would protect Kane like this. He lost to Jericho in a number one contender’s match a few weeks ago, yet Batista (a supposed heel monster) can’t even pin a guy he has pinned plenty of times before? That’s weak. Batista needed to have a dominant win here. Why the soft finish when there’s probably nothing in Kane’s future like always?

John Morrison d. Eric Escobar (1/2*)
This was a three minute squash basically. They called up Escobar two months ago, they put him in a few matches and they apparently soured on him quickly. Didn’t they know what they were getting into with this guy based on his work in Florida Championship Wrestling? I mean, that’s why you have that developmental territory. Why call a guy up if he’s not ready? Weird. Post match, Vickie yelled at Escobar and walked off in a huff as if she had walked up to the buffet table and nothing was left. See, I can make fat jokes too.

Backstage, Escobar caught up to Vickie and said he was sick of her. He basically said she was disgusting and it’s not worth it anymore, so they’re done. I don’t expect to see Escobar on Smackdown next week or anytime soon. It’s probably back to the minors for him, which is why they put Vickie in there as a consultant to Teddy Long. It keeps her around without keeping Escobar on Smackdown.

We get a video package replaying Monday. I’m dreading the next Raw with all the midgets. At least I get to watch a great Saints/Pats game that night.

They brought Batista out again to do guest commentary. He said nothing the entire time. He’s a better announcer than Michael Cole already and he’s only done this two times. He might win a Johnny Award if he keeps up this amazing consistency.

The Undertaker d. Chris Jericho via DQ (**1/4)
Two weeks ago they did their first ever match. Now they’ve wrestled in two tag matches (one on Raw, one on SD), a triple threat (Survivor Series) and on this show in another singles match. Way to kill a fresh match in about three weeks. I’m not complaining about seeing this match. I like seeing them wrestle. However, there’s something to be said about saving matches and finding a way to present good matches on PPV that people actually want to see. It’s foolish to lose sight of that. The match two weeks ago was better. It got a bit more time and due to the freshness factor, it had me marking out for stuff more. This time it was a replay of that in a lot of ways although neither guy really went for the big finishers. They did a spot where Batista got up out of the chair, stared at Undertaker, did absolutely nothing and that allowed Jericho to get the advantage. They did some counters with Undertaker hitting a big boot, then a legdrop and a two count. Jericho came back with the bulldog and the Lionsault. He was about to cover when Undertaker chokeslammed him. He set him up for the Tombstone, which was the cue for Batista to come in to clip him in the back of the leg for the DQ.

Post match, Jericho hit a Codebreaker while Batista got a chair. He beat Undertaker in the back with it although he didn’t do that great of a job of making it look real because it was obvious he was hitting the top of the chair on the mat. A couple of the shots looked okay. They ended it with a shot to the head with the chair, which was more of a grazing shot. It’s safer than a direct shot, so that’s fine. I was thinking Batista would beat on his lower leg with the chair and then put him in the ankle lock, which he has been using. He stuck to hitting him in the back before that killshot to the head. Oh well. I like creative beatings, what can I say?

I have no problems with Batista vs. Undertaker. I really liked their feud in 2007 although to be fair I didn’t pay that close attention to all of it because some of the matches happened after the Benoit murders and I wasn’t really watching every week. I’ve seen all the PPV matches, though. They have a bunch of very good matches in their history. I expect another good one with Batista now in the heel role. The question is what exactly is a chair match? A ladder match involves the winner climbing a ladder to retrieve something to win the match. A tables match ends when somebody gets put through a table. What’s a chair match? Does it mean a chair is the only weapon that can be used in the match? Can it be multiple chairs or just one? Will it be hanging, on a pole or be under the ring? We don’t know. We’ve got two more episodes of Smackdown to find out.

Three Stars of the Show
1. Chris Jericho – Strong opening promo like usual and solid in the ring as usual.
2. CM Punk – Fun promo again. Like his pairing with Luke/Festus so far.
3. Batista – I enjoy heel Batista a lot more than I ever enjoyed face Batista.

4.5 out of 10
Last week: 6

Smackdown was just average this week. For the first time since the draft lottery, Raw has been better than Smackdown for consecutive weeks. To me, the biggest problem on Smackdown are the lack of babyfaces in the midcard. They should really move Christian over soon because I’m tired of seeing guys like Hardy and Kane in the same type of midcard matches week after week. They booked Kane to lose to Jericho in a number one contender’s match a few weeks back. Why does he get another opportunity? Because there’s nobody else? That shouldn’t be a reason.

On the plus side, the top three heels on this show are excellent. I love Jericho and Punk while Batista has looked fresher than he has in the last five years.

Where was Drew McIntyre? They booked him to be one of the final three guys in his Survivor Series match and then completely left him off this show? He should be feuding with John Morrison for the IC title.

———

That’s all I got this week. See you on Tuesday for the Raw Deal and keep on checking the blog for other random posts on a variety of topics. On Monday morning I’ll let you know what column is going to be posted on Thursday. One of them has a lead right now, so I’m starting to write it already. It will be fun.

I made sure to cheer and boo when I felt like it.

In fact I’d cheer and boo the same guy just for the fun of it.

They were being noisy and annoying, so I decided to join in the fun.

Needless to say I don’t know if we’ll go back to a theatre to watch the match.

We had a yap box sitting beside us who decided to ask a question everytime a new wrestler came out.

I told Harry next time I go, if buddy shows up, I’ll have a roll of duct tape ready for him with his name on it.

I’ll simply say, talk and you wear it.

And that will solve his motor mouth problem.

Had I been sitting on the end of the row I would have asked the guy to kindly be quiet or move elsewhere.

He joined in with our party, and none of us really like him.

But no one had the guts to tell him so.

And I was down on the other end filling my face with nachos and cheese.

You know that’s the worst thing about going to the movies a few times a week.

Don’t bother eating supper.

Because as soon as someone sits beside you with food, you get hungry too.

I think they put subliminal messages on the screen too.

I watched WWE Survivor Series last night and it was full of some really good fights.

It’s been awhile since I saw a PPV that I really liked!

Last month’s was pretty good too, but Survivor Series was the best so far this year.

At least I think so, they did a lot of different matches and really shook things up.

I hate the fact that DX broke up though.

I loved watching Kolby Kingston kick Randy Orton’s a**.

Fin del show.

Dissension ruled the Unified Tag Team Champions Chris Jericho and the Big Show on Friday’s Smackdown

Dissension ruled the Unified Tag Team Champions Chris Jericho and the Big Show on Friday’s Smackdown. The prospect of competing against each other for the World Heavyweight Title, in the triple threat match at Sunday’s Survivor Series, has predictably driven a wedge between the team and rendered its future (beyond Survivor Series) unclear.

Members of a tag team finding themselves in direct competition for a singles title, throwing solidarity out the window for a shot at personal glory, is one of the oldest stories in pro wrestling. It’s a testament to Show’s and Jericho’s talents that they’ve been able to make the ancient angle compelling. The segment they performed backstage, before their main event tag match against the Undertaker and Kane took place, was quite entertaining. As Jericho insisted that he was not intimidated by his seven-foot tall partner and was not afraid of the Undertaker, a smirking Big Show nodded and crept off screen. Jericho lingered behind, a war of worry and resolve on his face, when suddenly the lights blinked off, and the locker room fell into a moment of darkness. Jericho cried out with obvious panic in his voice, and when the moment passed, the camera revealed that it was Big Show who’d killed the lights, to expose Jericho’s fear of the Dead Man and gain a psychological edge over his partner/opponent. The look on Big Show’s face was one of pure, smug enjoyment.

The match Jerishow had with Undertaker and Kane was very good. Undertaker looks better in the ring each week since his return (maybe his match at Survivor Series will actually break the eight minute mark). He, Kane, Show, and Y2J all worked well together, and each got in a few of his signature moves. Toward the match’s end Taker and Kane set up Big Show for a chokeslam through the announce table, but Jericho interupted before they could lift the giant off his feet. The Dead Man and Y2J then dashed back into the ring, where the former laid out the latter with a chokeslam. Then Big Show rolled in and brought down the Taker with a slam of his own. He then helped Jericho to his feet and received a code-breaker for his trouble. Jericho deliberately left it unclear as to his motivation for hitting his finisher on Show. Was he deliriously striking at the nearest big man, or was he intentionally taking down his partner, as a means of sending a message and building up a psychological advantage of his own? I guess it will become clear at Survivor Series. Personally I don’t expect Jerishow to break up just yet.

Elsewhere on the card: With his grudge match against Rey Mysterio only days away, Batista needed to win his match against Matt Hardy and he did. Fortunately the bout was not a squash. Hardy didn’t come away looking too bad, even though he endured a hefty pummeling at match’s end and lost decisively.

After the match Batista gave a good backstage interview. His introverted nature really works for him, when he projects the composed but frustrated heel, with monstrous anger smoldering just under his surface. Much later in the show, he sat at ringside for Mysterio’s bout against Tyson Kidd. He was technically there to do color commentary, but only breathed wordlessly into his headset, apparently too focused on the prospect of avenging Mysterio’s betrayal to say anything. It was obvious that he would get involved in the match, and he did. However, Mysterio unexpectedly got the better of their exchange, as he did on the previous Smackdown. He toppled Batista over his announcer’s chair and then easily evaded the Animal’s attempts at retaliation. It was an effective segment, evidencing how Mysterio quite easily makes up for in speed and savvy, what he gives up to Batista in size and strength. I’m anticipating their Survivor Series match much more than I was a few weeks ago.

Another very effective and entertaining segment featured CM Punk and R Truth. Hitting the refresh button on his heel heat, Punk hosted a “straightedge intervention” for the entire WWE Universe. He displayed a carton of cigarettes, a bottle of prescription meds, and a jug of whiskey, and explaining how each was merely a vile crutch used by the weak and will-less average WWE viewer, dumped them out one-by-one into a trash can at ring’s center.

Punk was (not surprisingly) terrific in this segment. Amping up his righteous condescension, he came off as an amalgamation of a self-help guru and an evangelical TV preacher, at one point even inviting viewers to place their hands against their television screens, so they might better feel his healing message. He drew some epic heat, which efficiently set up Truth to come out and interrupt the intervention. Truth’s rebuttal was relatively weak. It basically added up to “I don’t like you.” Still, the crowd was solidly behind him, and they popped when he nailed the former world champ with a DDT. Truth then picked up the trash can and emptied its contents onto Punk. The torrent of medicine/whiskey/cigarette soup cascading over the straightedge superstar was a memorable visual. Of course, Punk sold it beautifully, writhing in disgust as if contact with the substances would infect him with the addictions he so loathes.

(NOTE: This has been an often used device throughout WWE history: the offending glutinous muck traditionally [and not too subtly] symbolizes that which he or she being doused with it most fears. For Punk the muck symbolized addiction and impurity. When Henry Godwin “slopped” the vain and beautiful Sunny, he was in effect dousing her with ugliness. When DX dumped excrement onto the McMahons, they were afflicting the megalomaniacal family with poverty and a peasant’s anonymity. When Davey Boy Smith slathered dog food all over Ken Shamrock he…. well… I actually have no idea what that was all about.)

I think that R Truth should have left the ring after pouring the muck onto Punk, but he didn’t. Instead he struck the fallen preacher with the trash can, in a move that again the crowd loved but I thought was a little too vicious a punctuation to his essentially unprovoked attack. I guess he couldn’t resist adding injury to insult.

The two out of three falls contest for the Intercontinental Championship was the best match of the night. John Morrison’s offense was particularly smooth and fearless, and Dolph Ziggler had no trouble keeping up. Increasingly Ziggler demonstrates a unique presence in the ring. He carries himself like an old-school heel (along the lines of Mr. Perfect or Ravishing Rick Rude) but displays a more modern tenacity. He’s good at making moves look like they really hurt. Maybe that’s because they do; that baseball slide to Morrison’s back, for instance, while the latter was wrapped around the ring post looked devastating.

In the end Morrison retained the IC title with two falls to Ziggler’s one. The format of the match was a good choice. It benefited both wrestlers. Ziggler got to score a clean pin on the champion in a big match, and Morrison got to continue his impressive title run.

Both Mickie James and Layla did well in the short match they had. After being pinned by James, Layla introduced a pre-produced (and over-produced) taunt from Michelle McCool. The video featured a green-screened (and clearly tone deaf) McCool singing a version of “Old McDonald Had a Farm,” amidst a cartoon barnyard. It was a long way to go, for the ultimate purpose of simply calling Mickie James a pig (and superimposing her face on an animated, porcine body). At first I thought James was laughing it off as she watched, but then I realized she was actually crying. Seconds later I joined her. Male or female, I just can’t stand to see wrestlers cry.

One certainly can’t accuse Smackdown’s production team of liberal editing. I think Vicki Guerrero screamed for three full minutes, after McMahon told her she would be Teddy Long’s official consultant from now on. It was insufferable. Her voice actually gave up before the camera did, and she had to switch from squealing to cabbage-patching.

The video package Todd Grisham introduced as a look at the history of the “Brothers of Destruction” the Undertaker and Kane was a letdown. How can you have such a retrospective, no matter how brief, without featuring a few shots of Paul Bearer, in his late 90s glory, screaming about the Dead Man’s past sins, through the many soiled bandages on his face? It’s just not right.

On the official Lateral Press ratings scale, this episode of Smackdown (Paul Bearer’s absence aside) gets:

Four out of Five Stars

Last Monday’s episode of RAW was at times sloppy, at times inspired, and all over strange. Hosted b

Last Monday’s episode of RAW was at times sloppy, at times inspired, and all over strange. Hosted by Rowdy Roddy Piper and emanating from WWE’s most hallowed venue Madison Square Garden, the show did little to advance story lines or promote next Sunday’s Survivor Series PPV. Instead it saw the booking team indulge its own off-the-wall whims: inciting and then blowing off a feud between Piper and McMahon, having DX beat down and then offer medical attention to Hornswoggle, and opening the Garden’s doors (and handing TV time) to all manner of B through K level celebrities.

The one segment that not only abided by RAW’s week to week continuity but actually advanced it was also the best segment of the night: the brawl between Randy Orton and Kofi Kingston. It was excruciatingly obvious that Kingston was coming out to make the save, as Orton wound up to punt a beaten-down Roddy Piper in the temple. Orton certainly saw it coming, stopping in mid-punt and looking angrily down the entrance corridor before Kingston’s music even started playing. Clearly the sound technician missed his or her queue, or maybe Kingston wasn’t ready on time. Whomever was at fault, it was unfortunately Orton who looked bad, stutter stepping toward Hot Rod, with a look on his face like that of a high school actor whose stage partner just said the wrong line. However, the segment recovered quickly from the botch, as Kingston stormed to Piper’s rescue and engaged Orton in an intense, spot-laced, extracurricular slugfest.

Orton first got the better of his rival, landing a few blows and executing a beautiful guillotine catapult on Kingston. When the former champ went for his patented head punt, however (inspiring Michael Cole’s panicked call: “He’s about to end Kingston’s career!”), Kofi nimbly spun out of harm’s way and landed a cross body block/knee to the chest. The pair then brawled to the outside and into the the audience, coming to rest at one WWE’s trademarked backstage tables, littered with unmanned production equipment (they really shouldn’t leave that expensive stuff lying around). Kingston used one item of said equipment to strike Orton across the forehead (giving him a hard-way in the process). He then laid RKO out on the table and climbed to a nearby railing. The crowd popped when he suggested a leap from the railing, and then booed heartily when a group of officials denied the spot and restrained him. A moment later, however, they got the blood that they paid for, as Kingston dashed through the wall of referees, perched again on the railing, and leapt off to land a devastating double leg drop on the still prone Orton.

It was interesting how Kingston, with the refs hot on his heels, still took the time to preface the leap with his patented shoulder shuffle. You can’t deny the man’s showmanship. I wonder how the officials (off camera at the time) indisposed themselves to give Kofi the time he needed. My guess is they repeatedly fell all over each other, like the Keystone Cops on brown acid.

The notoriously defiant NYC crowd was whole-heartedly behind Kingston for this segment, and he delivered in a big way.

Elsewhere on the show: Roddy Piper did a fine job as host. He was often scatter-minded and very self-referencing, but we expect as much from the Hot Rod, and it remains entertaining to be reminded of his past exploits (speaking of which, I wonder if the fire extinguisher he had backstage was the same one he used to douse the late Morton Downey Jr. at Wrestlemania V… or did he buy a new extinguisher and name it Morton?). Piper certainly plays his part to perfection, no matter how infrequently he steps into it. Either he’s got a method actor’s evolved commitment to character or his advancing years have turned his old unstable, cockeyed work into a shoot.

The teased street fight between Piper and McMahon was an odd segment, and in the end turned out to be nothing more than filler. Their verbal confrontation was entertaining, especially on Hot Rod’s part. McMahon was his usual smug, un-engaging self.

Jack Swagger avenged his loss to Evan Bourne by squashing him in a rematch. It’s strange that creative continues to cast Bourne as a struggling under-carder who can only manage fluke victories. I know I’m not alone in my belief that, when it comes to the WWE audience, Bourne is capable of drawing more than just sympathy.

Both the Miz and MVP performed well in their surprise United States Championship match. The crowd was solidly behind MVP (which again should not be undervalued, considering New York fans’ reputation). Their support for him, however, may have been partially in thanks to the Miz, who garnered some serious heat during his pre-match promo (in which he suggested that the Yankees did not earn but buy their recent World Series win). Miz is excelling in his role as the heel who tells the truths that the masses would rather ignore. He’s still kind of annoying, but he’s using that to his advantage as well.

The DX segment was unremarkable save for its surreal ending. The one relevant piece of story-telling it offered was in the team’s acknowledgment of their competing against one another for Cena’s championship at Survivor Series, and their insistence that they could do so without fatally wounding their partnership and friendship. As Triple H put it, “It doesn’t matter which one of us wins the championship. [All that matters is] that the championship comes to DX.” We’ll see. So far there has been no hint of dissension between Triple H and Michaels.

As for their double crossing of Hornswoggle: I don’t think the stunt went over with the crowd. Michael Cole tried to pass it off as DX being DX, the edgiest, most unpredictable tag team in WWE history (although personally I believe that honor belongs to the Jumping Bomb Angels… but maybe Cole just meant within the men’s division). The crowd, however, didn’t see it that way. Their booing was warranted. A man of Triple H’s size assaulting a little person, and doing so with a face’s impunity isn’t easy to get behind. Plus Degeneration X is supposed to be an anti-authority faction punishing those who abuse the power they have over others. If they target instead the marginalized and powerless, their gimmick makes no narrative sense. At this point it seems like Hornswoggle will somehow factor into the triple threat match for the WWE Championship at Survivor Series. The bout really won’t suffer from his involvement; Michaels, Triple H, and Cena have been so jovial and nonchalant about the match, that there’s really no intensity for the Leprechaun to diffuse. It should be interesting anyway, to see how it all plays out.

The Lumber Jill match, in which Melina defended her Diva’s Championship against Alicia Fox was actually quite good. Fox is slowly perfecting her heelish swagger, and it was nice to see the crowd get behind Melina, a good worker who often seems to suffer from low confidence.

The show’s main event was epic in design: DX v.s. Jerishow v.s. Cena and the Undertaker, in a triple threat tag match. Such a star-studded contest on free television is bound to fall way short of its potential, and this one did. Still it was fun to watch, and all the competitors got in some nice spots. The Undertaker in particular looked faster, better balanced, and more energetic than he has since WM25. Of course the Dead Man’s tombstone pile driver on Cena after the latter scored the pin over Triple H, stole what thunder the match itself had. It was a bizarre move (though a popular one with the crowd, which true to NYC form was mostly anti Cena). In the coming months, I have a feeling this unprovoked attack will play over and over again and be regarded as the moment that sparked the Undertaker/Cena program, which will likely culminate at WM26.

On the official Lateral Press ratings scale, this episode of RAW gets:

Three and 1/2 out of Five Stars.

Justin Roberts presenta Roddy Piper.

4. Jack Swagger venció a Evan Bourne.

The Undertaker y John Cena vs. Triple H y Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho y Big Show en triple amenaza de parejas.

Ganadores: John Cena and The Undertaker

Fin del Show.

Smackdown superstars partied like it was 1066, as they invaded England last Friday night. In an effort to make its visit a memorable one, the show offered up a pay-per-view calibur main event, which pitted World Heavyweight Champion the Undertaker against Tag Team Champion Chris Jericho. This was the first ever one-on-one encounter between the two legendary WWE performers, and while the match wasn’t bad, it could have been much better.

Throughout the match Jericho carried the Undertaker, who’s been sluggish in the ring since his August return. Y2J was allowed plenty of solid offense, spending a lot of time posturing for the pro-Taker crowd as he systematically attacked the Dead Man’s left knee. When the champ got in some licks of his own, toward the match’s end, the crowd (having been taken to the edge by Jericho’s heel psychology) seemed to become more invested in the bout. After taking a big boot and snake eyes, Jericho briefly regained the advantage and landed a Lion-salt, from which the Undertaker sat up suddenly to a nice crowd reaction. From there Taker tried a choke-slam, which Jericho countered into and roll-up that led into the Walls of Jericho. The champ broke the hold and a moment later locked Y2J into his Hell’s Gate submission hold, to which Jericho promptly tapped out.

The frequent counters made for an exciting ending to an otherwise mediocre main event. While the match was not worthy of its combatants’ talents and prestige, it was successful on one level: it made both Undertaker and Jericho look strong heading into their three-way championship match with the Big Show at Survivor Series.

Elsewhere on the card: CM Punk took on R Truth, in a rematch from the previous Smackdown. Prior to the match, Punk was at his didactic, heat-seeking best, cutting a promo that took his straight edge message global. He then went on to avenge his fluke loss to R Truth, using the ropes for leverage as he scored the pin fall. It was a well booked finish: Punk’s checkered victory allowed him to win, without diminishing the momentum Truth’s gained of late.

Natalya looked impressive in her match against Mickie James. The Mexican surfboard she applied on James was textbook, and it was exciting to see her win with the Sharpshooter (even if she owed some credit to Michelle McCool and Layla, who distracted James by cutting up items of her personal wardrobe at ringside – I guess taking scissors to a rival’s clothing is a new heel tactic for getting into an opponent’s head; similar to when Kama threatened to melt down the Undertaker’s urn into a set of wearable gold chains [which would have been an especially impressive feat, considering that the urn itself was clearly not made of gold]).

Drew McIntyre and Finlay had a teaser of match, in which neither wrestler really dominated and which ended prematurely in a double DQ. (This match marks the first time I can remember that competitors were disqualified for brawling.) After the bell, McIntyre did was he’s come to do best: his face occasioned by an “all business” scowl, he assaulted Finlay with his own shillelagh and left him battered at ring’s center. Smackdown’s creative team should bring a new dimension to McIntyre’s character. He’s in danger of becoming predictable and losing some of his legitimate edge. Still, his trouncing of Finlay made him look strong. Seeing legendary tough guy Fit Finlay being helped to his feet by medical personnel made for a unique visual.

The Intercontinental Title Match in which John Morrison defended against Dolph Ziggler also came off as more of a teaser than a contest. Both Morrison and Ziggler performed well and at an engaging pace, but then the match ended abruptly and unceremoniously in a double count-out, which led right into a commercial break. Later in the show it was announced that the two will meet again for the IC Title in a two-out-of-three-falls match next week. I guess the indecisive ending was booked in an effort to build toward that bigger rematch next Friday, but something was lost in the execution. The ending of the bout was sloppily choreographed and made me wonder briefly if either Morrison or Ziggler had sustained an injury, in falling to the outside of the ring. Still, the two-out-of-three-falls match next week should be entertaining.

In her match with Beth Phoenix, Lisa Taylor took a very painful-looking Rude Awakening neck-breaker, while her feet were caught on the top rope. I kind of wanted to send her a singing greeting card after seeing that. I still might.

In-ring contract signings in WWE usually go about as smoothly as a couples-skate between Bill O’Reilly and Geraldo Rivera, and the one between Batista and Rey Mysterio (for their match at Survivor Series) was no exception to the norm. Both performers played their parts well: Batista was the cold-hearted heel, staring a hole through his rival, with equal parts smoldering rage and condescension in his eyes. Mysterio was the proud but reticent competitor, clinging to his honor among the ruins of a lost friendship. It was effective promotion. Batista’s proposed clause of impunity, stating that he would not be held responsible no matter what untold horrors he perpetrated against Mysterio in the ring, was a nice touch. And like all pro wrestling contract signings it ended with one competitor lying on the mat with a folding table on top of him. I was surprised, though, that it was Mysterio who struck the blow. I still think that creative could have milked the Batista/Mysterio program for a lot longer before letting them compete one-on-one, but they’re doing a good job building up the feud.

On the official Lateral Press rating scale, this episode of Smackdown gets:

Three out of Five Stars.

Ok, I’ve been a terrible blogger. I’m now behind on three weeks of Smackdown and one week of Raw. Oops. Those catch-up posts will be up tomorrow, promise. But for tonight, let’s focus on Survivor Series.

Batista vs. Rey Mysterio
Is there anyone who thinks Mysterio is winning this? I didn’t think so. Batista looks better and stronger as a feel than he ever has a face and it makes no sense for him to lose now. The only question is how badly will he hurt Mysterio?
My Pick: Batista

Michelle McCool, Jillian Hall, Beth Phoenix, Layla and Alicia Fox vs. Mickie James, Gail Kim, Kelly Kelly, Eve Torres and Melina

First of all, can I comment what an oversight it is that Natalya is not in this match? She’s probably the most talented woman on the WWE roster and I loved seeing her in the ring at Bragging Rights, it was one of the highlights of the terrible show. She would be a much worthier contribution than Layla or Alicia Fox, just saying. That said, team McCool is a little less useless than Team Mickie, so they’re winning.
My Pick: Team McCool

John Morrison, Matt Hardy, Finlay, Evan Bourne and Shelton Benjamin vs. The Miz, Jack Swagger, Drew McIntyre, Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler
Team Miz seems stronger since it’s got five hot, young stars including two guys (McIntyre and Sheamus) who are getting major pushes from the powers that be, while Team Morrison has three guys who are mid-carders at best and never going to be more than that, as well as two hot, young stars. But… The Miz and Jack Swagger seem to be headed for a big feud and I see that getting in their way tonight and giving the win to Morrison’s team.
My Pick: Team Morrison

Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase Jr., Cody Rhodes, William Regal, and CM Punk vs. Kofi Kingston, Christian, R-Truth, MVP and Mark Henry
We actually get to see Christian at a PPV! Yay! That said, I don’t think we’ll see much of him. This match is really about Kofi Kingston and Legacy, particularly Randy Orton. My prediction is that Kofi will be the last man standing on his team and he’ll be left facing Legacy, but that the three members of Legacy will start squabbling and somehow Kingston will manage the victory. This would solidify Kingston as a major player and it would start the long over-due destruction of Legacy. Not saying they’re breaking up tonight, but I think after tonight we’re going to be one step closer to the final split.
My Pick: Team Kofi

The Undertaker vs. The Big Show vs. Chris Jericho for the World Heavy-Weight Championship
I’d love for Jericho to win this, but we all know that’s not happening. And The Big Show doesn’t seem like a legitimate contender either since he hasn’t managed a one-on-one title shot in the last year, neither has Jericho for that matter. The Undertaker is retaining, but the destruction of the tag team champions is going to happen. They might not break up tonight, but the end will be in sight.
My Pick: The Undertaker

John Cena vs. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWE Championship
Cena got a clean pin over on Triple H on Monday, which makes me think he’s losing the belt tonight. The only thing I went back and forth over was which member of DX is going to win the title. In one way it made more sense for it to be Shawn Michaels to win to set up the eventual DX split since we all know they’re facing each other at Wrestlemania. After all Triple H used to be the guy who was all about the title, it would drive him nuts to see his friend with the belt and lead to a Triple H heel turn. But then, I realized that it also made sense and would be in character for Shawn Michaels to help Triple H win the belt (remember Michaels once laid down to give Triple H the European Championship) and would allow for tension down the road. The fact that Triple H took the pin on Monday made me think that that’s the way it’ll go.
My Pick: Triple H
