I don’t know about ya’ll, but Christmas really snuck up on me this year. Between work, illness and life in general, Amazon became my new best friend. Today I’ve been running around trying to finish all those last minute things that “make” Christmas “complete”. And then I got this email from MOH. I hope she doesn’t mind the reprint, but it really put me in check. With all of the hassle and drama of the last several weeks, I haven’t been remotely in the “Christmas Spirit” but today I got some serious perspective…and it was about as subtle as getting hit in the head with a ton of bricks…but it was also exactly what I needed; so I want to share it here. (So, a huge thank you to MOH and to her friend Skip for reminding me what the Spirit of Christmas really is)

Considering the season, I just wanted to share……..
One of the charities I’ve been volunteering some time with this year did a special “Christmas night” earlier this week. We got names of local children and young people from wish trees, schools, churches and the like. A local store, Kohl’s, got involved and arranged a special night for the kids to go shopping. Each child got a gift card for $100 and a volunteer from our group to help them shop. Kohl’s set the night up, set up separate registers just for our group, and store workers volunteered their time to help check the kids out. We got the parents to fill out an information sheet with each child’s clothing sizes, gift preferences, and anything that the parent didn’t want them to get.  We had a TON of volunteers to help. Adults, teachers, and my son and a few of his friends asked to join in too. A lot of us had our own children along, which made it even cooler.  The manager at Kohl’s told us they had more workers volunteering to help then they could even use.  (And they were doing this all on their own time!)
We took 52 young people that night, with ages ranging from about 6 to 17. Kohl’s had set up some tables and the employees had brought in drinks and cookies and stuff for the kids while they shopped. They had even arranged special discounts for us, taking 40 to 70 % off whatever the kids picked out. The people at store were AWESOME about everything! Their instructions were that NO child was allowed to spend anything less then their $100. If they were even a few dollars short, they sent them back for more.  And any child just a few dollars over?  Well, they never heard about it.  They treated the kids like royalty that night.
One of the young people I got to help that night was a very quiet, shy young man named Tobias. While we started shopping I started toward the toys and games, but Tobias was only interested in clothes. One of the first things he picked out was a big pack of underwear. Underwear? And from the list I had, it wasn’t even the right size. I talked with Tobias and tried to explain that it wasn’t the right size, but he insisted. After a minute he told me that it wasn’t his size, but that was because it wasn’t for him. It was his brothers size. That’s what he wanted…something for his brother. And the look on his face was just simply “happy”.
I swear, I didn’t even know what to say. Tobias was there to get stuff for him, and he was more worried about his brother then himself. And he was grinning like a loon about it. And it wasn’t even a unique story. I heard the same things from a lot of the other volunteers. The kids were all including others in what they were picking out. And they were getting excited beyond all reason at new clothes, and shoes that didn’t have holes in them. I kept thinking about my last few weeks and picking out presents for my kids or my mom, stuff for my sister and her husband, and even my dog…and the truth is, I suddenly found myself feeling really small and very insignificant somehow.
Most of what Tobias wanted was clothing. Not toys or games, but socks and jeans and a heavy hoody. He loved the tennis shoes he picked out!  So we made a deal. I grabbed a second cart and we made two piles. One full of stuff for Tobias, and one for his brother. I made very sure that he spent all of his gift card on his stuff…..Santa took care of his brother.
I watched all the other helpers, and they were all doing the same things I was. That’s when I realized I wasn’t just looking at a group of kids who were a less fortunate then others and people trying to “give” and help a little.  I was looking straight at Christmas. The part of Christmas that’s “real”, I guess. The part I still want to believe in.  Nobody worrying if the present was “in”, or if it was expensive enough. Very few of the kids wanted video games, jewelry or a designer name on their butt or a fancy cell phone to show off to their friends. Mostly they wanted warm clothes, and shoes, or stuff to give their moms. Oh yes…..and underwear for their brother.
So I’m sending this out with a special prayer for each of you, just for you. I hope that you have a wonderful holiday season, and wish wonderful things for you and your families. But my real wish, and my prayer, for you, is this: I hope that He lets you see the “real” Christmas. The part of Christmas I still love.  And if you’re really lucky, like I was…..I hope you get to see it in the face of a child, smiling and clutching a pack of new underwear for their brother.

I’m not quite ready to Defy Gravity, but:

I’m through accepting limits ’cause someone says they’re so. Some things I cannot change, but ’til I try, I’ll never know…

Today we had a team meeting with our new VP from the Washington DC office. It went better than I could have hoped. It looks like I may have the opportunity for advancement to the position I have spent the last three years work towards. It will mean going back to school at some point in the near future to finish my degree (a prospect that honestly scares the hell out of me); but if that’s what it will take to move forward then I will do it.

I spent years of my life so paralyzed by the fear of failure or just not being perfect and I have worked very hard to master those demons. I won’t let them keep me from what I’ve spent most of my waking hours striving towards. I love my job and it fulfills my deep-seated need for challenge and a dynamic work environment.

I’m already taking on even more responsibility but rather than stressing me out; I’m finally more energized than I have been in a while. I am looking forward to the new challenges I have coming my way and I think that these expanded projects will allow me the opportunity to show my bosses that I am ready for a promotion.

I am truly blessed to be surrounded by consummate professionals who are leaders in their respective fields; and to have these professional want to see me succeed. I’m not used to that in my work environment…I’m used to clawing my way up every single inch. And here, I have people championing my case in ways I don’t even know about. No joke, I have the greatest boss. Not only is he brilliant but he’s got a sense of humor. He appreciates my obsession with super high heels and his comment on my new stilettos (a pair of dark grey suede and Swarovski crystal studded Giuseppe Zannotti’s):

You know it’s been a good night if you wake up with puncture marks on your chest and those shoes look like they could do the trick!

Greatest boss ever!

On a much more serious note; today is AIDS Awareness Day. Get tested. Protect yourself. Don’t become a statistic and don’t ever become complacent.

Actual reality. Act up. Fight AIDS!

I love the words…and the track…okay and I really dig Mark Salling. Soon, I will start posting Hot Boy Wednesdays again…and yup, ya’ll guessed it, Mark is gonna be the next one.

Anyway, back to the song. It’s really hitting home for me right now. Nah, I don’t mean with addictions or anything like that…it’s deeper than that. I feel so frequently that I’m living from one emotional paycheck to the next, as it were. I seem to get a reserve of Light and then immediately deplete it and then it’s back to feigning for the next fix. It’s okay, I know that it has to be like this for now and I can handle it. And I truly am grateful for the people who share their Light with me and I’m thankful that I have the Light to share with my circle.

I guess I’m feeling less than fully authentic these days. It’s not on purpose; it’s not like I’m intentionally false. It’s more that I don’t think I’m nearly as invincible as everyone around me seems to think I am.

There’s a high schooler that I’m mentoring and she’s a phenomenal human being. But she’s struggling right now and she asked me how to be more real. I’m struggling to provide guidance that doesn’t seem trite even to my own head. She’s having the beginnings of a crisis of faith…I remember being 16 and I remember having some of the same inner crises (granted I had these much earlier than most people do) but everything I write feels so contrived. I need some clarity…some sense of direction to offer.

Time to focus…clear out some of the drama and bring back my own reserve of Light…hopefully soon…

Leeds United and a life in the Press Box

I HAVE recently just finished reading two books based on Leeds United.

The first was called Leeds United and a life in the Press Box written by John Wray. Now for me as a young aspiring journalist this was not only a fantastic read, but an interesting insight into the world of journalism and its development over the last few decades.

From sub-editing a match report between local teams Toby Jug and Squinting Cat to covering the European Cup final between Leeds United and Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes Stadium in Paris, Wray paints a fascinating picture of his journalism career.

The Unforgiven: The Story of Don Revie's Leeds United

A fantastic book with some wonderful anecdotes, this really is a must read for any upcoming journalist, Leeds fan or not.

The second book I recently read was The Unforgiven: The Story of Don Revie’s Leeds United by Rob Bagchi and Paul Rogerson. Now as I’m still relatively young (20-years-old), my knowledge of Leeds United’s history is (or was until I read this book) a little vague.

This book paints a colourful picture of Revie’s time at the helm and gives an interesting insight into how he built a fantastic team.

For anyone who has any interest in Leeds United, young and old, this book is a must have.

Séamus John James “Shay” Given is misschien niet de beste keeper, maar zeer waarschijnlijk wel de beste ballenstopper ter wereld. Dat leggen we uit. Het reactievermogen van Shay is zonder weerga, ’s mans reflexen zijn, niet alleen volgens Alan Hansen, unbelievable. Komt iemand alleen op hem af, dan dwingt hij deze tot de eerste actie. Want Shay weet als geen ander het geduld op te brengen om zo lang mogelijk te blijven staan. ‘In de lucht’ moet hij echter in zowel collega’s als tegenstanders soms zijn meerderen erkennen. En ook het ‘meevoetballen’ is niet given by god.

Naar de huidige maatstaven is onze Sar dus wellicht een betere, meer complete keeper. De overeenkomst tussen beiden is dat ze het niet van hun uitstraling moeten hebben. Hoewel Edwin de laatste jaren behoorlijk  is ge-restyled, zijn de oren toch altijd het imponerendst geweest aan zijn verschijning. De lengte even daargelaten. Ook Shay oogt bepaald niet als een beest in zijn kooi en is daarbij ook nog eens een koppie kleiner. Ofschoon inmiddels 33 lentes oud, zou hij niet opvallen tussen de Wiener Sängerknaben, maar des te meer op de set van The Unforgiven. A babyface without a trace.

De tragiek van deze ideale-clean-sheat-zoon is te zijn geboren in het verkeerde land. Een recordaantal caps, maar geen EK- of WK-finale. Bovendien had hij bijna zijn leven gegeven voor Newcastle United. Nu heeft hij zijn hart geschonken aan poenclub Man City. Het kan weleens hun beste  en zeker niet duurste aankoop zijn. Maar misschien is de tragiek van verkeerde afkomst en clubkeuzes tegelijkertijd wel Shay’s peace of resistance. Want nu krijgt hij bergen werk te verrichten en staat hij volop in the picture. Toch gunnen wij deze van talent vergeven Ier nog een echte topclub. Heeft Petr Cech zijn beste tijd niet gehad? Van The Sky Blues naar The Bues. Een blauwtje kan hij in elk geval niet lopen.

50 años han pasado desde el momento en el que los superhéroes fueron finalmente derrotados, el mal se impuso sobre el bien, los más grandes criminales gobiernan al mundo y ahora, Wolverine, el único héroe sobreviviente, esconde sus garras y se hace llamar Logan. Vive de forma pacifica en su granja con su familia. Intenta no meterse en problemas, ser un buen padre y esposo, y ser puntual a la hora de pagar la renta.

Pero todo se complica el día que no pueden pagar la renta del mes. La mujer de Logan le dice que no debe preocuparse, que es solo la renta de un mes. Que no debería pasarles nada. Incluso que pueden vender alguna de sus pertenencias para sacar un dinero. Pero Logan tiene claro unas cuantas cosas y sabe que no será fácil obtener el dinero ni negociar con sus arrendadores.

Logan hizo un juramento. No volver a sacar las garras, ni hacerle daño a más nadie. Y cuando el anciano y ciego Hawkeye le ofrece una oportunidad de hacer un dinerito, al viejo Logan no le queda otra opción que aceptar la propuesta y echarle una mano en el sencillo trabajo que le ha encomendado: manejar el coche y acompañarlo en la entrega de un “paquete”, con la condición que no romperá su promesa no importa lo que pase.

Y así es como empieza esta historia, llamada Old Logan, traída a nuestras manos por el dúo dinámico Mark Millar y Steve McNiven (Cilvil War). Millar es un tipo con cojones, le interesan las historias oscuras, duras y desbalanceadas hacia escenarios pesimistas. Todas estas características mezcladas al mundo de Wolverine hacen una combinación explosiva.

Old Logan, sigue el esquema típico de un “What if…”, solo que con mayores ambiciones. La historia cuenta de 8 números que si bien no son ejemplos de alto calibre narrativo, tampoco fueron creados con esa intención. La historia es concreta y despiadada, vertiginosa e indetenible.

El paisaje post apocalíptico presentado es un ventarrón de aire fresco que hacia mucha falta en el desgastado mundo de los comics. No es la típica historia de los héroes en situaciones complicadas y al borde del abismo, ya están en el abismo y tienen años pudriéndose en él, aquí no verán al típico Wolverine que todos conocen.

Es muy difícil esconder el homenaje a la película The Unforgiven que se puede apreciar en las páginas de esta historia y Wolverine nunca había lucido tan Clint Eastwood como en esta ocasión.

El arte es maravilloso, épico. McNiven se crece en los detalles de los rostros y envejecimiento de los héroes, su diseño sobre los personajes principales es impecable. La pandilla de Hulk es intimidante y los paisajes desérticos crean la atmosfera necesaria para el cultivo de la historia. McNiven es un artista que le presta detalle a los personajes que dibuja, le importan y se involucra con ellos, en su arte se transmite esta conexión.

Old Logan es una historia vibrante, desafiante, con ilustraciones de lujo y llena de posibilidades. Esperemos que Millar y McNiven regresen por más, yo quiero más.

I have been looking forward to the adaption of the comic book Cowboys & Aliens for a while now. The fact Robert Downey Jr is starring in it and Jon Favreau is directing it added to the coolness factor.

I thought it was going to be a rip roaring Wild West adventure and maybe a little bit cheesy, but in a good way.

However, IGN spoke to screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci about the film and it looks as if we will be seeing something a little different from the graphic novel.

“We went away from it. We took the elements we all loved about it and took our own story, which I can’t tell you too much about,” Kurtzman said.

Talking about Favreau, Kurtzman said, “We’re in prep right now. We’re having an amazing time working with him. He’s the greatest.”

The best thing was when Roberto Orci then described what one of the most difficult things to sort out was, “Tone. How do you make it so it’s not too funny? You hear the title Cowboys & Aliens and think, what is it? Is it Wild, Wild West? The exact same structure and story can kill you if you have the wrong tone. That’s the hard part.” As Kurtzman noted, “It’s not a comedy. What we came to is imagine you’re watching Unforgiven and then the aliens from Alien land.”

Unforgiven and then Alien lands. How cool does that sound. Should lead to some amazing visuals. With the right cinematographer it could also be a thing of beauty…with some nasty alien kills thrown in for good measure.

How do you like the sound of that?

I’ve heard worse. It’s not great. But it’s not horrible either. Sounds like typical stuff played on Top 40 stations here in America. Mostly, Metal Hammer hates it because the song was turned into a fluffy pop song. Sacrilege for them. But, really, who cares that much about it? It is weird, though, to hear a song with this kind of depth dipped into such high-fructose corn syrup.

However, I’m sure Metallica digs it. Cha-ching!

And the Swiss singer Stefanie Heinzmann is no different than any of the other hundreds of pop singers around the world. Looking for a hit. Not sure this will be it, though.

The Unforgiven – Metallica

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, ¿Quién falta en la lista?

Metallica!

Músicos del año 1700, grandes compositores en su momento, pero la música evoluciona junto con los instrumentos…

Estoy seguro de que en 300 años los hijos de los nietos de los nietos de mis nietos recordarán a Kirk Hammet, Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield y Jason Nesteed – Metallica – como unos de los grandes compositores de la música de nuestra época, con la diferencia de que tendrán a su disposición infinidad de fotos y videos con lo que no faltarán imitadores. (Que si hubiese habido la tecnología actual en el 1700, no faltaría el que fuera por la calle vestido como Beethoven o usando el pelo “simil Bach”).

Como para muestra basta un botón, Metallica haciendo The Unforgiven en el año 1992 en un concierto en vivo en Albany:

I’m on a painting roll! 2 large models in 2 weeks is a record for me so I’m back to celebrate my speediness with a Landspeeder!

I tried a bit more freehanding this time around and also included a great piece of detail purchased from Antenociti’s Workshop that consisted of a set of screens and a few sheets of detailed paper to be placed on the screen. Bare in mind that the monitor images must be glued on as the paper is just gloss paper with the images printed on to it. I tried to paint the details of the cockpit with contrasting colours to give the feel of consistent activity within the Speeder and around the Ravenwing occupants like you would expect in a fast vehicle. I also wanted to model the Land Speeder as if it was moving, so positioned the purity seals as if they were battling the wind, but I think I may end up repositioning the whole model to give it a much more dynamic appearance in the near future.

Time for an update! For those interested in how I created this model, please keep reading, if not then please check out the images above!

I recently completed my Master Belial conversion after having the plan sit on the sidelines for atleast 6 months. This was one of my most enjoyable models to convert and paint, and it involved quite an amount of work!

I decided to use the Terminator Librarian model as Belial’s base, and after some careful planning I set about getting to work on him. I have decided to follow a Games Workshop-esque feel to my conversions by rating their difficulty for me as an average modeller and painter so that most of us can compare! Here is a list of the parts I used:

- Terminator Librarian model

- Dark Angels Storm Shield from the DA Veterans box

- Ravenwing hooded biker head from the Ravenwing box

- A hanging relic from the DA Veterans box

- Deathwing shoulder pad from DA veterans box

- Terminator Thunder Hammer, Feathered Ceremonial Plate and Iron Halo icon all from the Terminator box

Total build time – 1 hour 30 minutes

Total paint time – 4 hours

Difficulty – 3 stars – Filing is a difficult thing to do properly so be sure to use a mask and goggles especially with metal models as the bits go everywhere.

Now I began by attaching a rounded file to my hobby drill and removing any Librarian icons on the model. I then performed one of the most complicated procedures I have ever attempted; I removed the entire librarians head from the body and filed deep enough to fit the new head before smoothing out the entire model. The easiest way I found to do this was to drill a sharp hole in the centre of the librarian’s head and file outwards with a larger filing head until the result is accomplished. I also filed and cut back the top of the psychic hood to make it more Terminator like as this is Belial and not a Librarian! The rest was pretty straight forward, paint scheme was the same as my usual pallette and I sprayed him with matte varnish.

Hoy 6 de junio asistí al concierto de Metallica en la ciudad de México. Ya había tenido la oportunidad de verlos cuando vinieron en 1993, pero yo tenía 11 años así que la verdad mi experiencia fue muy distinta antes y ahora.

Puntos buenos:

• Resorte, como abridor, fue una excelente elección. Su set list creo que fue muy largo, pero tocaron sus éxitos, cosa que se agradece.

• El set list de Metallica fue impecable, digno de fans conocedores de su discografía. Se olvidaron casi por completo de sus últimos 3 discos y tocaron pura antigüedad.

• La inversión que hizo el grupo en el show se nota: fuegos artificiales, helicópteros grabando el evento, muchísimos instrumentos (para sólo 4 personas), decenas de micrófonos, pantalla de LED con súper tecnología, dos pisos de escenario, etc.

• El detalle de haber regalado cosas al final: baquetas y uñas de guitarra.

• La manera de prender a la gente sigue siendo como pocas bandas pueden lograrlo. Enter Sandman, Sad but true, Seek and destroy, todas las coreaba la gente de manera impecable.

• Haber cambiado el set list del concierto pasado (el del jueves) a este. Seguro también mañana domingo será otro y mi apuesta es que van a enfocarse ahí a los éxitos comerciales: st. anger, fuel, etc.

• Por fin a OCESA le cayó el 20 de que no va a poder evitar que la gente entre con cámaras y celulares a los eventos, así que ya ni siquiera se inmutan en intentar confiscarlos.

Puntos malos:

• OCESA aún no entiende que ellos deben adaptarse a las necesidades de la gente y no alrevés. Tener que rodear el foro Sol para poder acceder y luego, una sola puerta para toda la gente, es demasiado abuso.

• Avenged Sevenfold, como grupo telonero, no fue para nada una buena elección. Prueba de ello es que la gente los abucheó, tanto el jueves como hoy. No son malos, sólo que no son para este tipo de eventos.

• La falta de control en cuanto a las drogas. Soy muy abierto en ése tema, pero no me gusta ver que un par de adultos pueden fumar mota frente a unos niños de su propia familia y que nadie les diga nada.

• Es demasiado cansado estar casi una jornada laboral de pie en un espacio tan reducido como es el área general del Foro Sol lleno de personas, tomando en cuenta que el costo de ésos boletos es alto.

Hey – so, while I was busy not blogging one thing I should have blogged about was The Glasgow Film Festival. Incase you didn’t know I’m a HUGE Audrey Hepburn fan and she was the like person of the year for them to show movies about and focus on. So of course – I had to go.

I had always since I got into Audrey Hepburn films wanted to see them in the cinema and as Breakfast at tiffanys was my first film I saw had wanted to see that one the most. It was so thrilling going to the cinema to see them films and seeing the sign saying ”SOLD OUT” (thank God I had prebooked my tickets)I’d already seen all of  the Audrey movies when I went to see them but it was even better seeing them in the cinema. Funny Face on Valentines day aswell. Romantic eh?;) Haha.

Anyway if you haven’t watched an Audrey film – DO!!
