BET finally has a primetime drama to fill out its schedule a bit. Going away from the typical BET-type of programming, the network acquired the syndication rights to the former CBS drama, “The Unit.” The series aired on CBS, starting in 2006, until its cancellation in 2009.

The series stars Dennis Haysbert, the Allstate guy. The series centers around a top-secret military unit modeled after the Special Forces Operational Detachment, also known as the Delta Force. For the most part, “The Unit” centers on the activity of Haysbert’s character of Sergeant Major** Jonas Blane.

Never in the history of BET have they aired such a series. Showing that they are willing to change, they do now. Ever since November 19, BET has been airing the former CBS drama. “The Unit” airs weeknights on BET at 8:00 pm.

Un símbolo. A veces sólo falta eso para que la serie de turno nos venga a la cabeza. Eso es lo que han debido de pensar los autores (o el autor) de estos carteles que hacen referencia a series de gran éxito. Algunas actuales y otras con más solera. Lo bueno es que su simpleza tambien tiene su complicación. Ya que estas cosas no se hacen así como así. Hacen falta grandes dosis de imaginación y saber bien sobre la serie que quieres tratar de homenajear. Por desconocimiento hay algunos carteles que no he llegado a entender muy bien, mientras que hay otros que al seguirlas los he reconocido de inmediato. Precisamente el que abre este post es uno de ellos. Los que no veais la serie “Dexter” igual no entendeis muy bien que han querido decir. Pero es una clara referencia a uno de los secretos del protagonista. Esas láminas de cristal en las cuales deja una gota de sangre de cada una de sus víctimas. Todas en una cajita, alineadas y guardadas en un aire acondicionado (en la cuarta temporada cambia su ubicación ).

Mis preferidas son, ésta, la de Prison Break, Twin Peaks, Los Ángeles de Charlie, Héroes, House M.D., El Coche Fantástico y McGyver. ¿Y las vuestras?

Hvis du har sett halvparten av disse seriene så ser du kanskje et mønster. Jeg ser på det jeg finner appelerende for min smak. Humor messig må det for eksempel være ekstraordinært samt “smart” humor. Kan innrømme at Family Guy humoren er en dum humor, men den er “dumsmart” hvis du skjønner. Men ta foreksempel Alan Shore i Boston Legal, alltid vittige meninger;

You know I’m not about to go to Texas and not ride the mechanical bull, Chelina. That would be like going to Los Angeles and not sleeping with Paris Hilton.

Ellers så ser dere kanskje at jeg er en stor sucker for drama og parforhold. Dramaserien jeg mener er best den dag i dag er nok The OC. Anbefaller alle som har litt tid til overs å kjøpe evt laste ned Sessong 1. Du vil ikke bli skuffet. For å få meg til å se en serie må det være noe jeg finner intressant, evt noe jeg kan relatere meg til. Hvis jeg kan relatere meg så er jeg hekta. Men det trenger ikke å være personer, det kan godt være en bi handling i serien, sånn som “will they, wont they”.

Jeg er utrolig feig selv på den fronten. Hyklersk som jeg er går jeg rundt å irriterer meg når skuespillerene bare går rundt grøten? (mulig den ble feil, men jeg skylder på mine vietnamesiske gener de).

Men for meg har det aldri vært lett å stole på folk. Det er nok min egen feil. Jeg setter alt for høye krav, og ofte må jeg motsi meg selv da jeg realiserer at jeg kan ikke forvente så mye av folk. MEN, det er faktisk noen som klarer å fylle mine forventninger og vell så det. Det er personer jeg aldri vil gi slipp på. Utrolige mennesker. Men uansett om folk, kall det “skuffer”, så bryter jeg ikke kontakt eller no. Bare stoler ikke på de med de “viktige” tingene.

Proseguimos nuestro repaso sobre qué series americanas de la temporada televisiva recién terminada se emiten en España y a través de qué canales. Hoy veremos la CBS, de la que nos han llegado ya casi todas sus series, sobre todo a través de laSexta y AXN, las cuales comparten con CBS el gusto por los procedimentales.

-CSI, CSI: Miami y CSI: NY. La franquicia de forenses más famosa sigue acaparando la noche de los lunes de Telecinco. La versión Nueva York va por la temporada 4 y la de Miami por la 7, pero la de Las Vegas no sabría decir hasta donde han emitido ya. Por pago puede verse en AXN, con un ritmo más cercano al americano.
- Sin rastro. Otra que lleva varias temporadas viéndose en nuestro país, en concreto en Antena 3, aunque con peores resultados que las sagas de ‘CSI’. Su séptima y última temporada se estrenó en prime time con discretos resultados, por lo que fue retirada. En cambio en el late night ha consechado mejores resultados. Al igual que CSI y otros procedimentales, el canal de pago que la emite es AXN.
- El mentalista. Ha sido el mejor estreno para CBS y también para laSexta, quien la emitió completa en abierto en nuestro país. Además, se vio en TNT por pago, cadena estrenará en proximamente la segunda temporada de la serie en VOSE.
- La hora 11. También laSexta compró esta serie, aunque no ha tenido el mismo éxito que la anterior. Ya se emitió toda la primera y única temporada. Por pago la emitió en FOX.
- Caso abierto. Otro procedimental más para laSexta. En sus inicios fue vista por TVE sin éxito, hasta que esta temporada la compró la otra cadena. Primero se repuso en las tardes y ahora se ve en prime time su sexta temporada. Curiosamente también se emite en Fox pero en este caso la emisión en abierto adelantó a la de pago.
- Numb3rs. Seguimos con laSexta. Al igual que ‘Caso abierto’, la cadena rescató a esta serie, en este caso de Antena 3, y tras reponerla por las tardes, ahora la emite en prime time con modestos resultados. Por pago la emite el canal Calle 13. Ambos canales emiten la 4ª temporada.
- Entre Fantasmas. Es una de las series más vistas de Cuatro y ya se ha hecho un hueco entre el público español. FOX ya emitió entera su cuarta temporada primero, y después Cuatro hizo lo propio, acabando el pasado jueves. Cuatro emitió la temporada en dos tandas, teniendo que parar por acercarse demasiado al ritmo de emisión de USA.
- Cómo conocía a vuestra madre. Otra de CBS en laSexta, aunque esta vez una sitcom. Emitida de madrugada como “serie de culto”, probó suerte con su cuarta temporada en un horario mejor, antes de ‘Sé lo que hicisteis…’, pero no enganchó a la audiencia. También es FOX quien la emite por pago.
- Worst week. Esta nueva comedia no consiguió mucho éxito, por lo que ya ha sido cancelada tras su primera temporada. En España se ha visto por pago en Paramount Comedy, y Telecinco ha anunciado que la emitirá, aunque aún no se sabe cuándo.
- Dos hombres y medio. La comedia más vista de EE.UU. no tiene, ni de lejos, el mismo éxito aquí. Se emite con pobres resultados en La2, y por pago en TNT quien emite su sexta temporada.
- The big bang theory. Esta sitcom, del creador de ‘Dos hombres y medio’ ya es un éxito consolidado en USA, aunque aquí tampoco despega. La primera temporada empezó emitiéndose en Neox y después dio el salto a Antena 3 con poco éxito. Por cable la emite TNT, que va por la segunda tanda.
- Flashpoint. Esta coproducción de la CBS con la canadiense CTV fue adquirida por Antena 3 para emitirla en su canal de TDT, Neox, donde ocupó el prime time de los martes. Recientemente ha dado el salto al canal principal, donde se emite los miércoles en horario de late night.
- Las aventuras de Christine. Esta comedia protagonizada por Julia Louis-Dreyfus pasa bastante desapercibida, en nuestro país no se ha visto en abierto, pero sí por pago mediante Canal+, quien sólo ofreció las dos primeras temporadas.
- The Unit. Otra serie de CBS cuyos derechos tiene laSexta. Comenzó a emitir esta temporada en prime time, pero después la pasó al late night ya que sus resultados no eran muy buenos. Por pago se vio en Fox, donde se emitió hasta la tercera temporada.
- Navy, investigación criminal. Y otra más para laSexta, aunque esta ha tenido mejor suerte que la anterior. Sus resultados en prime time son aceptables y las reposiciones por la tarde son de lo mejor del daytime de la cadena. En laSexta se está emitiendo la temporada número seis. En el cable, es la cadena AXN quien posee los derechos.
- Mentes criminales. Esta serie, una de las más exitosas de CBS se puede ver, al igual que CSI, en Telecinco y AXN. La cadena de pago ha llegado ya hasta la quinta temporada.
- Las reglas del compromiso. Aunque en abierto no se ha visto esta comedia, por pago Paramount Comedy ha emitido hasta la tercera temporada.
- Harper’s Island. Fue uno de los chascos de la temporada pasada tanto a nivel de expectativas como de audiencias. En España la está emitiendo LaSiete en prime time aunque el piloto se preestrenó en Telecinco.
- Todos mis novios. Aun habiendo sido un fracaso que se retiró de parrilla a los pocos capítulos, la serie ‘The Ex-List’ grabó una temporada completa de 13 episodios. Estos no se emitieron en CBS pero sí en España, a través del canal FOX.

Las que no han llegado. Pese a haber conseguido la renovación para una segunda temporada, la nueva sitcom ‘Gary Unmarried’ no ha interesado a ningún canal en abierto ni de pago. Tampoco ha sido comprada, aunque en su caso es más lógico, la fallida sitcom ‘Do not disturb’.

Along with being the biggest month of the year for both series and season premiere’s for TV, September is also one of the biggest months for TV on DVD releases.  Don’t ask us why.  We think it’s kinda stupid to wait until September as, like we’ve already pointed out, the month is crammed with plenty of stuff to watch on TV AND it doesn’t give people much time to catch up before the next season begins, beyond the fact that it’s a wallet-buster.  It’s a massive month of overload, in our book.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t still be excited!  We’re especially looking forward to Fox’s mind-bending first season of Fringe, the fourth season of The CW’s cult-hit Supernatural (on blu-ray to boot!), Canadian sci-fi lite dramedy Being Erica’s first season and, of course, the third season of NBC’s comedy giant 30 Rock.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a military television show after JAG ended its run in 2005. 24 was one of the closest in terms of its counter-terrorism theme, but it centered on one hero and had a couple of bad episodes in its first season due to cheesy acting, which stopped me from following the show ( though I’m not sure if the recent seasons have improved ). Being uninterested in more popular shows like Gossip Girl and Prison Break, it was by chance that I found this relatively new television production which would keep me thorougly entertained.

The Unit is a CBS production based on the book Inside Delta Force by ex-operator Eric L. Haney. As it is titled, the show revolves around a top-secret military unit and at the centre of focus is a five-man team codenamed ALPHA. In particular, Season 1 was centered on a new member of the team, Bob Brown ( played by Scott Foley ), and his wife Kim Brown ( Audrey Marie Anderson ) as they adapt to life in the unit.

What sets The Unit apart from other television serials is its focus on realism and simple, mission-based storylines, the result of creator Shawn Ryan’s style who is also responsible for the highly-acclaimed police drama The Shield. The Unit promises Viewers are treated to exhilarating military action as well as the reality of raising families under military conditions. The latter includes the difficult task of keeping wives in the dark about missions which leaves the women to develop a special bond among them while their husbands are out at war, extra-marital affairs and financial problems. The superb realistic acting is delivered by Dennis Haysbert as Alpha Team Leader Jonas Blane, who previously also starred as the President David Palmer in the action drama 24, and complementing him are Max Martini ( Saving Private Ryan ), Michael Irby ( CSI: NY and Miami ) and Demore Barnes ( Street Cents ) alongside Foley ( Felicity, Scream 3 ). The team is commanded by Colonel Tom Ryan, played by Robert Patrick who is most famously known for his role as the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Episodes are set, and sometimes shot, in a variety of locations around the world as the unit undertakes missions to protect America from terrorists. Missions always differ, which is a key factor in keeping The Unit fresh – one week the unit could be ordered to assassinate a political target, and in the next episode they could be tasked with rescuing Christian missionaries held hostage by rebels. Because the show is modeled after the real-life Delta Force and even has Haney on its production team, The Unit always strives to produce the most intense yet realistic mission sequences. There are no typical Hollywood slow-motion effects or exaggerating explosions, and the team members often deploy near-authentic military tactics to complete their objectives and get out of tight situations. Military buffs will definitely dig the action sequences while the regular viewer will be equally thrilled.

Audiences may take a while to get used to the pace of Season 1 as the storyline of the military wives felt a little awkward and out of place amidst the fast-paced action of the soldiers. However after the first few episodes, the show develops to weave both story threads together while keeping their distinctiveness intact. Most episodes will go back and forth between the warzone and the home front, maintaining a healthy balance which keeps viewers on their toes all the time and not get bored. Furthermore, there are a couple of long-running plots running concurrently which contain many twists along the way, making The Unit one of the most intriguing to watch.

Why am I recommending The Unit so long after its debut? Firstly I only learned about it last year after chancing upon an episode on the Tudou website as I was looking for 24 streams. Secondly, the DVD set for Season 4 is due to be released next month, which ties up the entire series. The Unit ended its run on May 10 leaving some unsettled plotlines, but unfortunately CBS announced its cancellation 9 days later. The network claimed that the show did not receive enough ratings compared to other productions but from the activity on the forums it is possible to see a large fanbase of the show even outside the US. ( See rumour for show cancellation ) It is unlikely that Singapore would bring this highly-acclaimed action drama to our television programme line-up which is already dominated by the established favourites of Lost and Prison Break, and most of the online streams from earlier seasons are no longer working.

If you’re apprehensive about The Unit’s appeal, it would be interesting to know that my parents were easily hooked onto the show after the first episode even though they seldom watch serials. webmaster03’s family felt a similar influence when I introduced the show to him. Thus don’t miss out on this excellent yet overlooked televsion drama by getting yourself the first three seasons to prep yourself for the final one. Or you could wait for the release of the complete gift set which comprises all four seasons. The Unit has much potential to be a long-running television show with its unique style, so perhaps if DVD sales are good along with the strong ongoing petitions from the community, CBS may be encouraged to restart the series.

“Shazam!” apparently isn’t as dead as what has been reported earlier this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor-turned-writer Bill Birch has been picked up by Warner Bros. Pictures to reboot this adaptation of a DC Comics series that features Captain Marvel. In scripting the screenplay, he will get a helping hand from DC Comics writer Geoff Johns.

Currently writing Warners’ “One Finger Salute”, Birch who has starred in such series as “The Unit” and “Just Shoot Me!” is the sixth writer brought into the project to pen the screenplay. “The Princess Bride” scribe William Goldman, “The Basketball Diaries” writer Bryan Goluboff, “Garfield” screenwriters Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, and “Big Fish” penner John August have all taken a crack at adapting the comic series.

Birch’s co-writer, Johns, is one of the three DC Comics heavyweights hired by the studio to act as consultants on DC projects. With the tapping of Birch and Johns, Warners is said looking to go back to the original DC Comics source material for inspiration.

Based on a popular comic series originally published by Fawcett Comics, this superhero film centers on Billy Batson, a teenager who becomes Captain Marvel when he utters the magic word “Shazam!”. The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

“Get Smart” director Peter Segal remains attached to direct. He will also produce the feature project with his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing. Segal and Ewing had begun working on the project three years ago at New Line before it moved over to Warners.

Greek, 3ª temporada (ABC Family) – Acompanho, entusiasticamente, a saga de Casey, Rusty e cia desde o início. Greek fora produzida para preencher buraco de programação, no canal ABC Family. No entanto, com um roteiro afiado e maroto, embora um tanto pueril, a série conquistou seu espaço e cativou um público-alvo específico. Para tanto, os responsáveis pelo seriado utilizaram-se de fórmulas consagradas – por vezes, batida – no intuito de estabelecer um padrão temático e constituir fiéis seguidores. A única ressalva que tenho em relação à essa terceira temporada, é o fato de a trama ter perdido sua vilã-mor, a ardilosa Frannie. Os roteiristas terão que se desdobrar para darem continuidade aos inusitados conflitos, outrora, ocasionados pela referida antagonista. No mais, a série tem tudo para emplacar mais uma bem-sucedida temporada.

Gossip Girl, 3ª temporada (CW) – Assim como já explicitei em algumas ocasiões, repito: Gossip Girl é a malhação de luxo dos nova-iorquinos. O roteiro é absurdamente superficial e, às vezes, de uma ingenuidade risível. Contudo, acredito que o glamour e os mistérios que circundam a vida dos personagens contribuem para que o congênere do seriado global se sobressaia em alguns aspectos. A famigerada temática de idas e vindas de casais, que, em tese, nasceram para ficarem juntos (Dan e Serena; Chuck e Blair), sempre proporciona bons momentos, além das armações dos autoproclamados antagonistas. A expectativa da temporada fica por conta do surgimento do meio-irmão de Dan e Serena.

One Tree Hill, 7ª temporada (CW) – Dramalhão mexicano sem precedentes, que deixei de acompanhar há muito.

House, 6ª temporada (FOX)– Esta, certamente, está inclusa no meu Top Five de séries. É incrível a capacidade de David Shore e dos demais roteiristas deste aclamado seriado de se reinventar a cada nova temporada, reservando, sempre, situações absolutamente inesperadas. Falar da interpretação de Hugh Laurie é redundância, a julgar pela quantidade de indicações em Emmys e Grammys que ele conquistou. Na última temporada, havia o receio pela substituição da equipe do Dr. House, no entanto, o terrificante, degradante e genial processo seletivo imposto por House pulverizou qualquer preocupação acerca da troca de subalternos. Ao contrário, a modificação revitalizou a história e deu novo ritmo à trama. O único percalço fora a súbita saída do Kutner (Kal Penn), que, para os que ainda desconhecem, debandou da série em função de compromissos políticos assumidos com a gestão Obama. A despeito da próxima temporada, muitas surpresas aguardam o séquito de fanáticos seguidores do seriado, a começar pela estadia de House em uma clínica psiquiátrica.

How I Met Your Mother, 5ª temporada (CBS) – Atualmente, esta é a minha série de comédia predileta, ao lado de 30 Rock. É impossível não se entregar às desventuras de Ted Mosby para encontrar a mãe de seus filhos e às inapeláveis, por vezes rascantes, encrencas que seus amigos Marshall, Robin, Lily e Barney se metem. Em sua quinta temporada, parece que finalmente contemplaremos os decisivos momentos que culminarão no esperado encontro da mulher que se casará com Tedy e, com ele, terá dois filhos.

Brothers & Sisters, 4ª temporada (ABC) – Atualmente, esta atração é, sem sombra de dúvida, a minha predileta. É simplesmente impossível não se sensibilizar diante do carisma que emana naturalmente da família Walker. Sally Field está sensacional como matriarca de uma gigantesca e pródiga prole. Seus cinco filhos, todos eles com características absurdamente únicas, proporcionam momentos de descontração, drama, comédia e suspense, sempre mantendo uma verossimilhança assustadora com os hábitos familiares. Em dados momentos, a comunhão dos personagens é tamanha, que facilmente somos transportados a um plano no qual, ilusoriamente, pensamos que eles realmente fazem parte de uma mesma família. A depender da sua situação emocional, é provável que, em algum momento desta série, você já tenha ansiado ter uma mãe tal como a Nora; uma astuta irmã, como a Kitty; ou cálida, como a Sarah; ou um perspicaz, como o Kevin. Enfim, sou fã incondicional desta brilhante produção e faço votos de que sua vida útil se estenda por muitos e produtivos anos.

Californication, 3ª temporada (Showtime) – Aguardo ansiosamente – quase em cólicas – pela terceira temporada desta série. Com um roteiro sagaz, ágil e despudorado, Californication é uma das séries mais inovadoras da atualidade. É inevitável não torcer pelo protagonista, o escritor Hank Moody (David Duchovny), ante as agruras impostas pela vida em função de decisões equivocadas. Todos os personagens são essencialmente peculiares e marcantes. Becca, a filha de Hank; Karen, a ex; Charlie, o agente; Mia, a ninfeta; e Marcy, mulher de Charlie. Esta nova fase mostrará o dia a dia de pai (Hank) e filha (Becca), agora, morando juntos, já que a mãe, Karen, foi para Nova York.

Desperate Housewives, 6ª temporada (ABC) – A última temporada terminou de forma eletrizante, com a morte de Edie, a volta de Susan e Mike, a derrocada de Dave, a nova gravidez de Lynette Scavo e muito mais. São premissas auspiciosas que permitem que vislumbremos uma nova etapa em Wisteria Lane, repleta de situações inusitadas, dramas, comédia, surpresas. A exemplo do roteiro inventivo de House, Desperate Housewives adentra à sua sexta temporada com fôlego de sobra e muitas histórias para se explorar. Mais uma vez, certamente, seremos presenteados com um show de interpretação das quatro protagonistas deste seriado, que também habita a lista do meu Top Five.

Dexter, 4ª temporada (Showtime) – Como um serial-killer reage ante a paternidade? Esta é a pergunta que todos os fãs de Dexter estão se fazendo no momento, às vésperas de a quarta temporada inaugurar os trabalhos. Provavelmente este será o mote que norteará as ações da nova fase de Dexter, uma série instigante e envolvente, haja vista a dose de tensão e suspense que permeia todas as situações. O elenco é afiadíssimo e Michael C. Hall incorpora o protagonista de forma visceral. A depender da situação, é quase impossível cerrar os olhos durante um episódio sob risco de se perder algum detalhe determinante para os rumos da trama.

The Simpsons, 21ª temporada (FOX) – Tenho sido uma ovelha desgarrada deste decano das séries. Mas, faço questão de ressaltar, ainda compartilho da ideia de vitaliciedade a esta sensacional produção.

Nip/Tuck, 6ª temporada (FX) – Acompanho Nip Tuck desde o início. Assisti a todas as cinco temporadas e, portanto, posso afirma com propriedade que esta série descambou para o lado circense (ridículo). Os dramas e tragédias se potencializaram de tal modo que se tornaram cômicos. Os inesperados destinos de Sean e Cristian desagradaram a todos – sem falar da Julia. Não é que a série tenha perdido o fôlego, mas, sim, o fio da meada. Até pouco tempo atrás, considerava-a inovadora por explorar temas intocados, porém, agora, para mim, ela não passa de mais uma produção banal que aborda questões superficiais, sem a menor importância.

30 Rock, 4ª temporada (NBC) – Destaco dois pontos principais desta série genial e, por vezes, incompreendida: o roteiro e os atores. O texto é de uma primazia e agilidade inquestionável, com sacadas atuais e sagazes. A atuação de todo o elenco é impecável – diria impagável. Há uma sintonia singular entre todos. A relação entre Liz e Jack é indescritivelmente cômica. Os demais personagens compõem uma confraria de humor extremamente refinado: Tracy é hilário; a Jena, indefectível; e o Kenneth, surreal. No seu terceiro ano, 30 Rock continuará a exibir as investidas de Jack em sua mesopotâmica missão de ascender ao cargo máximo da NBC; as peripécias da vida privada de Liz Lemon; e as mazelas da intrépida trupe do mais improvável programa de TV.

Surpreendentemente, em vias de iniciar sua terceira temporada, Chuck ainda não caiu no gosto popular. Uma pena, pois suas histórias são envolventes, intrigantes e geram incontáveis expectativas acerca do futuro do Intersect, da relação de Chuck com Sarah e das mazelas vivenciadas na Buy More. Nesse novo ano, a apreensão dos fãs da série reside em dois pontos: quais serão os desdobramentos das novas habilidades adquiridas pelo personagem principal; e se essa será será a derradeira temporada da série, uma vez que seus produtores já deram mostras de que não estão satisfeitos com o desempenho da produção em termos de audiência.

Weeds, 6ª temporada – Sem data confirmada – Comecei a acompanhá-la há pouco, no entanto, já reuni subsídios suficientes para constatar de que se trata de uma série imperdível. A temática é inovadora – rompe uma série de tabus e paradigmas, por tocar em um assunto normalmente posto de lado em sociedades permeadas pela hipocrisia moral (maconha). A protagonista Nancy é apaixonante e seus complexos filhos, encantadores.

Entourage, 7ª temporada – Sem data confirmada

Hung, 2ª temporada – Sem data confirmada – Atualmente, Hung está próxima do final de sua temporada inaugural. À primeira vista, a série é aviltante; traz para os nossos lares um tema árido, nem um pouco frugal, de difícil absorção. Porém, com o desenrolar da trama, o telespectador acaba desenvolvendo uma grande empatia com o personagem principal, Richard. A despeito da premissa inicial do seriado, que, para os desavisados, pode soar como pornográfica, os roteiristas conduzem a questão da exploração do dote fálico do protagonista de maneira sutil e bem real. Portanto, não há motivos para temer possíveis cenas cujo mote lascivo possa ferir os princípios de ditos puritanos.

True Blood, 3ª temporada – Sem data confirmada – Como abordar a temática de vampiros sem descambar para o ridículo, a fanfarronice e a bizarrice? Longe de ser a panacéia das produções artísticas desse segmento, True Blood surgiu com uma poesia contemporânea inserida nesse contexto de vampiros. Há momentos, sim, em que há certa apelação, mas, nunca, de forma ridícula. A interpretação de Anna Paquin, como Sookie, é visceral, intensa e extremamente convincente. Há de se ressaltar, também, a peculiar beleza da referida protagonista. Agora, sei que serei alvo de críticas, Stephen Moyer, como Bill, deixa muito a desejar, sobretudo em cenas que demandam maior expressividade e elevadas doses de drama. Falo isso mesmo levando em conta que o personagem de um vampiro milenar deve ser de uma impassibilidade marmórea quase inexorável, mas, ainda assim, Stephen se perde na tentativa de transparecer uma aura austera. Os demais personagens dão um verdadeiro show: Jason, Sam, Tara, Lafayette, entre outros. A série está no auge de sua segunda temporada e, portanto, seria incoerente de minha parte projetar a terceira, sendo que muitas incógnitas ainda estão por se descortinar.

Das novidades do primeiro semestre deste ano, a única que aparentemente não emplacou foi: Mental. O que não representa nenhuma surpresa, já que, assim como mencionei em outra oportunidade, a série já iniciara suas atividades com uma mácula: roteiro batido – clínica, médicos, casos quase impossíveis, destemida equipe, doutor rompedor de paradigmas e eticamente questionável.

Para finalizar este imenso post, gostaria de acrescentar a essa pródiga lista de produções, a série The Diary of Anne Frank, produzida pela BBC de Londres. Dividida em cinco emocionantes episódios, a trama é baseada no diário da menina judia Anne Frank que, ao lado de sua família e outros judeus, viveu reclusa por dois anos num sótão de um prédio, na Holanda, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Durante essa estadia, Anne compôs um diário, com esmero e destreza gramatical digna de grandes escritores, contendo relatos sobre o dia a dia naquele lugar e as impressões que tinha acerca dos outros e das relações que matinha. Após deflagrado o esconderijo e Anne e sua família serem levadas a campos de concentração, o diário fora encontrado por uma amiga e, posteriormente, publicado, tornando-se um Best-Seller, traduzido para diversos idiomas. Na série, é espantosa semelhança da garota que interpreta Anne com a real. O elenco, correto e irrepreensível, consegue traduzir perfeitamente o terror e o pânico os quais a família fora submetida à época.

Escrito por Eric L. Haney, Força Delta conta como foi criada a unidade (nem tanto) secreta de contraterrorismo do Exército americano. Haney, um sargento dos Rangers, foi um dos fundadores da força de elite, depois de algum tempo em outras unidades também de elite.

A Força Delta, ou 1º Destacamento Operacional das Forças Especiais D, foi criada pela necessidade de os EUA lidarem de maneira mais cirúrgica com um mal que deixava os americanos cada vez mais preocupados pelo seu crescimento acelerado: o terrorismo. Assim, em 21 de novembro de 1977 a Força Delta fixa endereço em Fort Bragg, Carolina do Norte, e passa a dar treinamento especializado a militares selecionados a dedo dentro das fileiras do Exército.

Uma das coisas mais interessantes do livro é saber que, diferente do que é mostrado no cinema, a Força não tem em seus quadros aquelas figuras com corte de cabelo escovinha, queixo quadrado, cara de mau e físico de míster universo. São militares que devem ter todas as características que não os denuncie como militares. É um paradoxo, pois o treinamento é árduo e exaustivo. E por que isso? Como as missões são secretas, na maioria delas os militares seguem incógnitos nos locais, geralmente no Oriente Médio. E como ela foi criada bem no auge da Guerra Fria, algumas das missões também rolavam no Leste Europeu, já que corriam boatos sobre a relação promíscua entre a URSS e os terroristas árabes-palestinos (assunto amplamente explorado em A Hora da Vingança, resenhado anteriormente).

Aliás, as primeiras missões são a tônica do livro, juntamente com o treinamento inusitado.

Informação adicional: o livro deu origem à série The Unit, que passava no canal Fox aqui no Brasil. Sim, a 3ªtemporada já rolou e a emissora nem quis saber.

Para quem gosta do assunto, um livro imperdível. Para quem não curte, uma leitura diferente, pelo menos para ampliar os horizontes.

And this wasn’t the television show that Rudi enjoys so well. It is a book, the first novel of Ninni Holmqvist, a Swedish author known originally for her short stories. Friend Judy mailed me this from Cape Cod after she’d read it. I read maybe one novel a year, so this was to be it for 2009!

I wanted it to have a Phosphorus ending… I started reading in bed on Thursday around 11:00 pm, and put it down Friday at noon. I spent some time between those hours sleeping as well. I guess I couldn’t put it down.

The book is written (very, very well) in the first person. Dorrit Weger has turned 50, and the story begins as she is being checked into the Second Reserve Bank Unit for biological material.

You see, she is dispensable. Women 50 and over, and men over 60, who are not contributing to society in traditional ways are placed in a lovely apartment in the Unit. They have everything they might need – wonderful food and restaurants and cafes, a shopping area with stores and boutiques, wonderful gardens and parks and lawns (albeit under a glass enclosure, since the Unit is sealed from the outside) in perpetual spring and summer.

Because Dorrit has never married, never had children and doesn’t have a job that is indispensable, she becomes part of a new society of people whose needs are met in almost every way, as they live out their later years serving society in a new way. They participate in medical and psychological experiments to add to the world’s collective knowledge and they become organ donors for the “indispensable.”

A very interesting read, that brings up loads of interesting questions…

I recently purchased a new car.

I wish the transaction had been that easy.  It wasn’t.

First, I searched various auctions and used car lots, tirelessly trying to find a vehicle to suit my needs (high MPG, Low mileage, lower cost).  Fruitlessly, the cars in my budget were either undesirable (see: Hyundai, Kia, Toyota Echo… seriously, there’s a reason Toyota doesn’t roll out new models of that lawn mower) or relics (Full loaded Honda Accord… made in 1993!).

Second, I decided to check out Antwerpen as my impromptu survey of the cars I passed on the highway and in the parking lot of my place of employment tended to have Antwerpen Auto’s JacksaysYes’ insignia on them.  Well, Jack should change his motto to JacksaysYestoshitnooneelsewillbuy…

Finally, despite some lukewarm things I heard, I tried Carmax.  After scouring the droves of cars available ( Carmax is like the Ross or Marshall’s of the auto world… Except, instead of sifting through racks upon racks of plaid FUBU and 34×26 Jeans, you get to scroll page upon page of slighly imperfect cars.  There really is no better in either scenario).

However, against all hope, I found my car! It was instant love the moment I laid eyes on her… She was a 2003 Volkswagen Passat.  Perfect color (metalic blue) and she handled like a dream on the test drive (granted, I had just talked myself into testing a 2006 Nissan Sentra so anything would’ve been better in comparison… I do mean anything, even a 2004 Elantra handled better).  Anyway, I was ready to sign papers and make it official… give her registration my last name… and first.  However, something (it was Our Dad) told me to “do my research”.

The internet has become a double edged sword.  While providing us with far more information than is readily available to make well-informed decisions, it also has a plethora of factoids and opinions that can often freeze us.  Paralysis by analysis.  The reviews on Edmunds.com and autoreview.com and a host of other sites made me freeze… Oil Sludge, Engine Problems, Fuel shortages, burnt out coils.  The Passat read like an Auto version of a Maury Povich Show guest…

I was shook.

I spent two days constantly talking myself in and out of the car (one of my coworkers pleaded with me to buy a Toyota… He broke it down like this: A Toyota is like the girl next door… She’s not flashy, nor going to Wow! anyone, but she’ll always have dinner on the table, she’s faithful, and will be there in 20 years.  The Passat was like that smoking, hot girl.  Yeah, I’d blow everyone away when I came into a party or out at the club, but we’d be fighting all the time, a love-hate relationship and she’d spend many nights away at other people’s houses (repair shops) and we’d have a messy divorce that hurt my wallet… Needless to say, Charlie Sheen must’ve bought a Passat).  In the end, I finally decided to go back and purchase the car.

I secured insurance with Progressive (long story:  Let’s just say that I’m jacking the Gecko up, erasing the Esurance girl, and challenging Pedro Cerrano to a fight when I see them… don’t get me started on Nationwide) and I was ready to go.

One Problem.  The Passat had been sold.  Our dad told me I should’ve bought it one of the previous days.  He’s helpful like that.

So… What did I do?  The same thing that millions of other Americans would do when the person of their dreams left with someone else.  I found the first, decent looking alternative and pushed ahead full steam (This is a love story… though, not like the South Carolina Governor for reasons I don’t think I have to spell out).

She was a 2002 Toyota Camry.  She has a sun roof, 30+ MPG, and less than 75k miles… which, for a Toyota I’m told, is just breaking it in.

That’s the story… We’re happy together and I don’t even think about what could’ve been when I see Passats on the road now.

Well, I do a little bit…

D’you know why I love living in Hollywood?  Because of the sheer diversity of people and talent you find here, any one of which you might meet at any time.

A perfect example was this weekend. Friday, I went to a birthday party and met a TV producer. But not just any TV producer – Howard Gordon, the guy who executive produces and writes 24 for Fox. He also wrote X-Files episodes and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Nice man. Very talented.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t seated at his table. I got planted between his stepmother, who writes stage musicals, and his fourteen year old son, who plans to the moment he’s old enough.

Then, Saturday, I went for dinner at the home of the guy who runs the Nickelodeon network. Thanks to him we have Spongebob Squarepants.  But he’s also an amazing cook. By the end of the evening we were planning a vacation together in England next year, just him and me. How great is that? Not to say highly improbable.

Finally, last night I had dinner with someone I’ve never heard of – Sandy Martin. But I quickly I discovered she’s an accomplished actress, one that I should have heard of her, to tell you the truth, because she’s really successful, albeit in a bit-part and constantly working kind of way.

Sandy played “Jimmy” in the Young and the Restless, for instance, and “Selma Green” in Big Love. According to her bio, she also played “Mac’s Mom” in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, “woman with cane”  in The Unit, “woman #1″ in Desperate Housewives, “grandma” in Napoleon Dynamite, and “Lori” in the movie Marley and Me.

She’s heaps of fun, but she had to rush off. She was shooting a music video today with Dermot Mulrooney. Then she’s making a movie with Samuel L. Jackson. I mean, hell, I was more in awe of her than I was of the guy behind 24.  What a career.   

There’s nothing like meeting people of this caliber to make you realize what a loser you are and that you’ve been nowhere, done nothing, and pretty much wasted your time for the last two decades. Even the fourteen year old son of the guy behind 24 has more on his resume than I do.

Now I have to go. I left my glasses at the home of the Nickelodeon guy, my new travel buddy. He’s taking them to the office today and I  have to pick them up from reception. Terrific.

I know I rely entirely too much on the FriendFeed Crime and Mystery Fiction room for the tidbits I harvest for this blog. It’s far more productive than the Google alerts I have set up. But really, if you want to know about Scandinavian crime fiction – and every other kind of crime fiction – you should sign up. It’s addictive.

Norm (aka Uriah) comments on Karin Alvtegen’s Shadow, saying. “the sharp use of language and metaphor in Karin Alvtegen’s Shadow to depict a bleak loveless world is quite brilliant. It might have a little bit to do with the translator McKinley Burnett.” A few posts later, he provides a full review.

This is a complicated and complex novel which paints a very bleak picture of humanity with its cast of socially damaged characters . . . The book succeeds on many levels but especially as a lesson that once you take that first shaky step away from the straight and narrow you have no idea where it may lead. This book like the other Alvtegen novel I have read Betrayal is brilliantly written and plotted; but it is very dark definitely not a cheerful read.

He also provides a much-appreciated service by putting Harry Hole in order (particularly useful given the books have been translated out of order – though Harry himself would probably resist anyone trying to organize him).

The Brothers Judd review Henning Mankell’s The Man Who Smiled, pointing out that the hero, Kurt Wallander, is not the subject of the title; they find the story a bit didactic.

The Spectator reviews a handful of mysteries, including My Soul to Take by Yrsa Sigurdardottir, saying it is “spooky and gruesome . . . both chilling and witty — an agreeable combination.”

Cathy of Kittling Books reviews an intriguing book that is more speculative fiction than mystery, but it certainly sounds interesting – The Unit by Swedish author Ninni Holmqvist, which deals with biomedical ethics in a dystopian world. (Incidentally, one of the things Cathy does in her review that I love is quote the first line.) She also provides her take on Anne Holt’s What is Mine, saying “this book is an ardent commentary on parenthood and an absorbing mystery with a nice little twist at the end.” She also says, “try as I might, I just can’t ignore these wonderful mysteries that keep coming my way from Scandinavia!” Hey, to paraphrase P.D.Q. Bach, if it reads good, it is good.

Maxine has an excerpt from Matti Joensuu’s To Steal Her Love that includes a rather endearing image of a man apologizing to a rabbit: “each time the rabbit finished eating its dandelion leaf Harjunpää quietly apologised and fetched him a fresh one growing by the wall.” And she adds another excerpt, with a promise of a Euro Crime review forthcoming.

Euro Crime has an update on the Dagger polls – you’d think it was the Booker Prize in the old days, making book on books.

Peter reviews K. O. Dahl’s The Last Fix – a bit pedantic for his tastes, but with some good psychological insights and dry humor, all well translated by Don Bartlett.

DJ reviews Liza Marklund’s Studio Sex, apa Studio 69. She reckons it’s perhaps her best.

With friends like these, I’ll never run out of things to read next.
