It’s getting towards that time of year when the tuneless unlistenable sentimental charity singles that you aren’t allowed to criticise start to mass-singalonging their way out of the woodwork, so what better time to celebrate the most tuneless, unlistenable, sentimental and not-allowed-to-criticise-tastic (seriously – a previous long-forgotten blog post on this very subject drew some extremely stern rejoinders) of them all… Chicken Shed Theatre’s I Am In Love With The World.

Cast your mind back, if you will, to 1997, a year that brought us Blue Jam, Supergrass’ best album by far, and Phil Cool celebrating the eleventh anniversary of drinking some Citrus Spring. This was also the year, of course, of Princess Diana’s fateful flight from the paparazzi, yet weirdly, despite the unwelcome repercussions of the ridiculous outpourings of grief still being felt to this day, the effect of this defining historical moment on popular music was negligible to say the least. The weeks that immediately followed saw The Verve being stopped from being famous, Denim’s offensively upbeat Summer Smash being given a release date of ‘never’, Radio 1 briefly turning into wall-to-wall ’meaningful’ Oasis album tracks, and Elton John releasing poignant tribute Croco-Di Rock, though even that only topped the chart for about three minutes and then… what else?

Well, the answer would be ‘nothing’, if it wasn’t for a certain charitable organisation. Founded in the seventies, Chicken Shed Theatre is a long-running project with the laudable ambition of giving ‘mixed ability’ youngsters the opportunity to participate in the creative arts. This is all truly wonderful stuff, but even that cannot really excuse the woefulness of I Am In Love With The World, issued as a single in tribute to their former patron. This woefulness has nothing to do with the performance; oh no, you can only admire the gutsiness of the contributing youngsters, particularly that lead-singing girl who despite an endearing lack of technical ability has the guts to roar like an eighties ‘rawk’ power-balladeer without the slightest shred of self-awareness. It’s just the song itself, an utterly empty anthem-by-numbers with ridiculous phatic cliched lyrics. Worse still, or worse still for anyone who wasn’t particularly fond of hearing it, it was promoted as ‘Diana’s favourite song’ on account of the fact that she had heard it once, which in all fairness means that Georgie Fame could have re-released Wake Up Morph under a similar pretence. Still, as a cultural snapshot of that curious weekend in that curious late August, it’s right up there with the blase Fred Harris-remembering launch of TV Cream, and that local radio DJ who accidentally played Fall On Me by REM instead of Everybody Hurts when he was trying to be ‘reverential’. Though anyway, the version by The Curious Orange on This Morning With Richard Not Judy was better.

So, there, I’ve said it. Go on, kick off in the comments box. It’ll make a change from all the people shouting about Stewart Lee or Russell T Davies betraying the glorious legacy of Mission To Duh. And if you’d rather sing along at home, here’s those lyrics in full:

Har egentligen ont om tid att uppdatera idag på grund av skolarbete men det får vänta. Jag kunde inte hålla mig! Ich grinse. Wandere weiter, boxe mich durch diese sich wehrende Nebelwand. Bleibe kurz stehen um mir eine Zigarette anzuzünden. Etwas Rauch mehr stört hier wohl niemanden, oder? Ein Blatt Laub erwischt mich am Kopf. Irgendwie tragisch. Auf dem zielgerichteten Weg vom Baum zum Grund, kracht es ohne Halt gegen dieses Stück Mensch. Ich verhelfe ihm zu seinem Ziel, wische es von mir ab.

So Monate wie November oder so ein Wetter wie Nebel sind nicht die beste Grundlage für gute Gefühle. Aber manchmal funktioniert das einfach. Obwohl die Welt um einen herum jahreszeitlich einstürzt, schafft man es doch, mit einem Lächeln durchzuwanken. Mit einem ehrlichen, vom Herzen kommenden Lächeln.

Und als ich mich schließlich auf dieser einen feuchten Parkbank niederlasse, noch einmal tief diese Nebelluft einatme, beginne ich nachzudenken. Über heute und gestern, die Tage zuvor und die Tage danach. Lasse mich umschließen von dieser undurchsichtigen Decke und fühle mich einfach nur gut.

how do you escape?

My first 3 miler! As you can tell, I’m not an elegant runner; I’m a sweaty mess, anxiously ticking away the seconds, minutes, tenths, nervously observing my rock-like calves and quads for twinges (cos sometimes you can be too muscular),  plotting in my head two steps ahead as to what song will be most motivating, debating whether I should stop for 30 seconds.

I just started running a couple of months ago, and I’m not a twig (though I’m strong) so…it’s definitely a struggle of the will a ‘Me vs. Me’ epic battle that requires major heaps of transcendence, and just plain push.  A dear dear friend surmises that I run just so I can compile the perfect RP. There’s probably some truth to that, so much so that you can definitely guess the first three songs by now! But the others, well, some of them are courtesy of a frantic iTunes download as I was heading out the door…

9. ‘Help I’m Alive’ Metric. I thought this song would be perfect, but it only made me super panicky, so I switched it out after a minute. I tremble/they’re gonna eat me alive/if I stumble/they’re gonna eat me alive/can you hear my heart beating like a hammer/beating like a hammer? (cos when your heart actually is beating like a hammer, empathy makes it worse)

10. ‘Anarchy in the UK’. Sex Pistols. I heard it on the Retro Lunch on Friday and made a note of it (not the traditional running Post-it Note). You know, this song shouldn’t work with my running song requirements cos there aren’t distinct parts and it’s not screamy, it’s not terribly transcendent. But it’s totally totally bad ass. And that, my friends, is what a first 3 miler requires and should be modeled on: digging deep, gutsiness, a who-I-am check, total disregard for how crappy you’re feeling at the moment, pushing through the pain. Very punk. So this is the perfect theme song.

(It wasn’t lost on me the irony that I was listening to ‘Anarchy in the UK’ while watching ‘World’s Strictest Parents’)

Exciting times for Theme Park. This week marks the first show of the Summer season, our First Anniversary and it was our Melbourne Cup Special with a live cross to Melbourne for Australia’s #1 horse race. We ran a sweep for our subscribers, with great prizes, and lots of fun was had by all. But what about the music, you may well ask?  The theme this week, quite appropriately I think, was LUCK.  

We opened the show with Stevie Wonder’s  SUPERSTITION. Stevie knows that it’s easy to blame bad luck when things go pear-shaped, but he’s not up for making excuses. “When you believe in things that you don’t understand, then you suffer”, he states with no uncertain authority. Here he is in the studio, circa 1973:

People have a tendancy to limit a person’s achievements by simply limiting it to ‘luck’. But don’t be envious, things aren’t always as great as what they seem, as Britney Spears points out in her 2000 song LUCKY, which spookily foreshadows her future breakdown. Thin Lizzy have a similar problem: They can’t help thinking that the grass is always greener on the other side: Someone else, somewhere else, is luckier than them. The song is HOLLYWOOD (Down On Your Luck) from their Renegade album. Here they are performing live in 1982:

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes can even make a song about bad luck funky with a great piece of disco called, (what else?),  BAD LUCK. The JoBoxers are lucky in love and they want the world to know it. What better way than a song called JUST GOT LUCKY? Bonus: Cute dog in this video clip:

When it comes to love we all know there’s a downside and no other genre does bad luck as well as the Blues category. Memphis Minnie seems lucky in love, because she has no trouble finding a guy; the trouble is, as soon as she finds one, disaster strikes. The song is I’M A BAD LUCK WOMAN. We followed with one my favourite jazz performers,  the wonderful, melancholy voice of Chet Baker singing EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.

I had to include two of my faves: The Verve with LUCKY MAN and PJ Harvey with GOOD FORTUNE - The track is from her album Stories from the City, Stories From the Sea:

Alison Krauss and Union Station sang THE LUCKY ONE right up until we crossed to to Melbourne for the Cup broadcast. Congratulations to BayFM subscriber Annette who drew the winner of the race, SHOCKING, and therefore won the sweep and the dinner for two at Utopia Restaurant with limousine transfers from Bangalow Limousines. Thanks to everyone who rang in for the sweep; filled in a record 5 minutes!- and thanks also to our sponsors.

While we recovered from all that excitement we listened to a little R&B: YOU WIN, I LOSE from Little Johnny Taylor and LUCKY LIPS from the fantastic Ruth Brown. Jason Mraz and Colbert Caillat offered up a cute bit of optimistic pop with their duet LUCKY. Matchbox Twenty aren’t so positive. Their song, SEMI-CHARMED LIFE, indicates a bit of a ‘glass-half-filled’ take on life.  

A song I’ve played before, but couldn’t resist, was LUCKY NUMBER by the amazing Lena Lovich. It’s a great piece of New Wave from 1978. If you want to check out the video clip go to the show on the Number ONE.

Remember Alan Price singing O LUCKY MAN! from the film of the same name? I’d forgotten how good that was. Starring a very young Malcolm McDowell and directed by the legendary Lindsay Anderson, here’s a clip from the film that features Alan Price singing the title song.

Another great song is FORTUNE TELLER. Originally recorded by Benny Spellman in 1962 it’s been covered many times. We played the version by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss from their Grammy Award winning album, Raising Sand. We also included two songs about how much ‘attitude’ influences luck. Lynard Skynard were crying out for sympathy with their song GOOD LUCK, BAD LUCK: “When it’s good luck you’re the last to get it, when it’s bad luck you’re the first.” Ah well, some would call that a persecution complex.  Mary Chapin Carpenter knows how to have a good time. She ignores all advice, to her benefit, with the very chirpy I FEEL LUCKY:

We closed the show with The OJays singing THEY CALL ME MR. LUCKY and then it was a perfectly pitched piece of pop – Rod Stewart’s  SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK.

Claro que passou também honey da Mariah Carey, numa época em que ela ainda podia fazer clipe de biquini e correr, claro que passaram mais clipes, mas eu só cheguei a tempo de ver esses.

Então fica a pergunta, o que foi que aconteceu? O gosto musical das pessoas piorou? Porque?

La vida de The Stone Roses va ser tan curta com intensa, tan productiva com destructiva, convertint-los en l’última gran llegenda del pop britànic. En només un any, 88-89, van aconseguir definir el pop dels temps futurs, per després caure en l’autodestrucció per culpa del seu propi ego, el mateix ego que a la cap i a la fi els va fer tan grans.

Elephant Stone (1988), el seu tercer single, els va posar en el punt de mira de la crítica musical britànica, veient en ells els futurs herois d’una nova generació. I no n’havia per menys; els gairebé cinc minuts d’ Elephant Stones eren dels millors que s’havien escoltat en el món de la música en els darrers anys, creant una única personalitat: melodies beatlelianes, la psicodèlia de la Costa Oeste americana, l’actitud irreverent i desafiadora dels Sex Pistols, la contundència de Joy Division i l’eufòria rítmica de l’Acid House; havia nascut el so Manchester. Un any després s’editava The Stone Roses, un disc carregat d’himnes amb vocació de clàssics, amb l’ inici captivador d’ I Wanna be Adored, la frenètica She Bangs the Drums i la colorista Made of Stone, temes que van projectar a la banda més enllà de les Ïlles, convertint-se en el grup més important del moment. El mateix any editarien el single Fools Gold, la prolongació necessària del seu debut. El tema comença allà on acabava I Am the Resurrection, i resumia en 10 minuts tot el que era la banda. Un altre single, One Love (1989), posaria punt i final a la primera i gloriosa etapa de la banda. A partir d’aquí tot va començar anar per uns altres terrenys, entrant en una guerra amb la seva discogràfica, Silvertone, per anul·lar el seu contracte per poder fitxar per Geffen, a més dels problemes en la gravació del segon disc, procés pel que van passar un gran nombre de productors; tampoc van faltar baralles amb la premsa britànica. Finalment, el 1994 aconsegueixen editar The Second Comming, un disc infravalorat, no acaba d’agradar a ningú, la qual cosa porta tensions entre els membres del grup, fet que comporta desercions: primer Reni, el bateria, i posteriorment, John Squire, guitarra. Això fa que al 1996 Ian Brown i Mani, després d’un nefast concert al Festival de Reading, decideixin acabar amb el grup.

Per cel·lebrar el vintè aniversari de la edició de The Stone Roses, la discogràfica Silverstone ha tornat a posar a les estanteries de totes les tendes discs vàries reedicions de l’àlbum. La primera un CD doble on hi trobem el disc i un segon titulat The Lost Demos, on podem comprovar els procés de gestació de l’àlbum. La segona edició, en vinil amb carpeta doble; i la tercera una espectacular box, que inclou: el vinil, 2 cd’s, un dvd en directe, un llibre de fotografies i una llimona-usb, amb tots els seus singles i les seves cares b en versió digital.

Amb el pas del temps, The Stone Roses ha acabat esdevenint tot un clàssic del pop britànic, a l’alçada de qualsevol nom que us passi pel cap; el seu debut és un dels treballs més influents de tots els temps, marcant les pautes de grups com: Primal Scream, The Verve, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Oasis o els U2 d’Achtung Baby.

Normally for the Weekly 10, I find myself counting down things that piss me off. You know, like phrases that suck and uninspired Halloween costumes. So I’ve decided to give you a mix tape for putting up with me airing my grievances Letterman-style.

However, this mixtape is extra mixy. I present to you: my top ten favorite mashups. Wikipedia defines a mashup as, “a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another.”  Basically smushing two songs together to make an even cooler one.

Yeah, I was inspired by last week’s episode of Glee; how could you not be? That show is so. damn. good.

3. Anything off the Grey album
Black Album (Jay-Z) + White Album (The Beatles) = Incredible. I guess that’s what happens when you put two music legends together. I love the song, “What More Can I Say” with “As My Guitar Gently Weeps,” but the whole album is simply amazing. Gotta love Dangermouse.

2. Girl Talk
Every song rules, can’t pick just one; Gregg Gillis is all kinds of brilliant.

Because I couldn’t narrow it down to just ten, especially when Ludacris is involved. Sick beat.

Okay, so I may be a little biased because “Get Low” might be my song if I were to do a wedding “Forever” style. Kidding. Sorta. But seriously, blend this throwback Lil Jon with the bouncy Junior Senior and you get perfection. Not to mention it makes Lil Jon slightly more tolerable for people who don’t understand his artistic genius.

This is a two part post.

PART 1

First off, as a few of my close friends and family will know, October is an annually difficult month for me, a lot of shit has happened in this particular month over recent years, say maybe from 2003 onwards. None more so than last October (2008) which was probably the hardest yet. I’m not going to go into details as this isn’t a therapy session afterall but those in the know will understand what i mean. It just seems to be a difficult 31 days in general.

I’m only half way through this October and i’ve already had a pretty shit few weeks. In the last fortnight i’ve succeeded in thinking too much about things from the past, present and future which has led to me embarassing/making a fool of myself, arguing with friends, taking frustrations out on friends and family and pretty much just moping around the house. I can’t seem to communicate properly even with my closest friends. Everything i say or try to say seems to get lost in translation (hence the title) so to speak, even now i can’t seem to spit out the right words of what i want to say about everything in general.

PART 2

BUT i’ve decided that i’m not gonna spend the rest of October just sitting about feeling sorry for myself. I’m going to start being positive about things…anyway there’s only another 16 days left till November comes! Then things will be back to normal….

The first positive came last night, i had a great time at The Big Pink, helped by the fact that my friends Gus, Luisa (http://littlenihilist.wordpress.com/) and Gordon were there. I know that they haven’t exactly been feeling amazing or having the best of times either recently so it was good for us all to go to the gig, have fun, have a wee talk about various things and drink too many White Russians (again). It was a really great night, Gus and myself had bought our tickets months ago but it was almost a spur of the moment thing for Luisa, Gordon and Paul to join us, they were hoping to head to King Tuts and just pay at the door….guess what? It had sold out! We were looking at another repeat of Temper Trap, they were gonna have to tout and beg their hearts out for a ticket. An hour or so passed, no joy, still no tickets, looked like Gus and i were going in alone and gonna have to just meet up with the other 3 in the bar afterwards. …no wait..”there’s the drummer from The Big Pink” i said as Akiko lit up her cigarette. Gordon, fuelled by a bottle of “wine” and a few milky vodka treats, then had the courage to go up to the tiny drummer and explain his love of Robbie Furze’s old band Panic DHH. Gordon was even wearing his 9 years old Panic DHH t-shirt as proof of his love! Anyways, the kind Akiko then disappeared inside for a few minutes and came back out with the best surprise possible. She had got Gordon plus 3 onto the guest list. With me and Gustav already having our tickets that meant that Gordon, Luisa and Paul could use the guestlist passes and still have a free space left over…you should’ve came afterall Chris! The gig itself was littered with quiet/loud moments reminiscent of feedback pioneers Jesus and Mary Chain (just as i had expected) and My Bloody Valentine. And afterwards i had the pleasure of meeting the Big Pink , i grabbed a 5 minute conversation with Robbie Furze (singer and guitarist) about our love for Sonic Youth, DFA and certain guitars. Then i managed to squeeze in a good chin wag with Milo Cordell (synths and general noise) about his fucking brilliant record label, Merok Records (http://www.myspace.com/merok) . Cordell is the man who found the Klaxons and Crystal Castles among many more and gave them their first big break. I managed to surprise him with my knowledge of a band called Salem. I asked him for a few tips on good bands from Merok that i might not know and he looked genuinely shocked (in a good way!) when i told him that i fucking love Salem, especially their dark and altogether slightly disturbing take on Bruce Springsteens “Streets of Philadelphia” which they’ve named “Brustreet” (get it checked out). Then after another 5 minute conversation with Robbie Furze about lyrics and chords it was off into the night to get some food then back to my bed to try and sleep off the oncoming hangover. All in all, a really good, if not very sweaty (King Tuts is a sweat-hole!) and warm evening for all involved.

Bitter Sweet Symphony, the lead single off The Verve’s Urban Hymns album, is what I consider to be one of the greatest songs of all time. If I had to pick one song to listen to for the rest of my life, this song will be my top pick. It doesn’t get old. It was released on the 16th of June, 1997 and was nominated for a Grammy award.

I only recently discovered that The Verve made no money from this song because they plagiarized the Andrew Oldham Orchestra’s version of The Rollin Stone’s song, ‘The Last Time’. When I first found out, I was a peeved at The Verve. After doing some research, I changed my mind.

The Last Time actually sounds nothing like ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’. I am not a fan of this song.

The Verve managed to get the rights to use the sample of the orchestra version but used a bit too much. Take a listen:

Wow, great song, but I still don’t see how the Andrew Oldham Orchestra created this from ‘The Last Time’. It does not have the same impact ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ has.  The song lyrics of ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’ were written by The Verve’s vocalist Richard Ashcroft. Regardless, the band lost all rights to the song due to its popularity. “The Rolling Stones got greedy when the song became successful” (Superwells). This is where it’s unjust. The Verve made the song their own and it is way better than the original. He wrote the lyrics! The Verve deserved fifty percent of the rights. At the Grammy Awards the nominees for the song were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

Well, that’s all in the past now. Let’s all remember what a brilliant song The Verve revolutionized and the impact it left on this planet.

*Purchase their last album, which was released in 2008, titled “Fourth”. The band has broken up and gotten back together so many times, I don’t know if they’re still together or not.

On the corner of one of Moscow’s famous Garden Rings,  stands the cosy Hoboe Nckycctbo store, a cultural haven of  literature, music and film.  With it’s peeling paint door and  a brass bell that rings on entering, the shop offers the kind of nostalgic kitsch that the Moscowites lap up.

Down a grand spiral staircase, below a first floor of DVDs and books, lies a musical kingdom. The warm wooden finish, and classical music softly seeping through two Bose speakers, create an ambience dissimilar to the atmospherics of your  average basement record store.

A large stand in the middle of the shop contains hardbacks’ on popular and classical music. The volumes, for sale at a pretty penny, compass everything from biographies of Beethoven to analysis of why new wave happened.

Behind this impressive literary collection, on the back of the stand, is the store’s proud collection of vinyl. Consisting mostly of represses of pop records, they are intended for the wealthy record lover and priced well out of our ballpark.

I flick through the alphabetical categorised sleeves,  stopping to pause at The Verve’s Urban Hymns and a few Beastie Boy LPs,  amongst the hordes of AC/DC and Iron Maiden. I run my fingers over Royksopp’s Melody AM and Radiohead’s Pablo Honey, both on double LP.  The feel of the plastic beneath teases at what I want, yet can’t have.

The vast CD selection, that runs along the walls, is  more reasonably priced. I find myself lingering over Underworld’s Everything Everything album, a live record from their 1998/1999 “Beaucoup Fish” World Tour. Along with Two Months Off, it’s the only Underworld LP  which I can’t claim in my collection.  However, having already splashed out on Breakfast whilst in Moscow, I can’t justify blowing my budget again, and force myself to move on.

Elsewhere the usual ‘trendy’ albums are on display and, apart from George Harrison’s Concert For Bangladesh ( the collaboration with Eric Clapton on ‘Whilst My Heart Gently Weeps’ is spine-tingling), nothing stands out as being worth the mortgage down-payment it would cost to buy it.

If I ever come into a large amount of money, the first thing I will do is jump on a plane to Moscow and go for a trolley dash around this place. Until then, their tasty but over-priced records will stay on the shelves.
