In last month’s Q magazine, I read with some surprise and not a little disappointment, their (rather early) list of the top 50 albums of 2009. Although these lists are by their very nature incredibly subjective, I found myself taking issue with the vast majority of their choices. Florence and the Machine at number 2? Kasabian at number 1? The Decemberists skulking around just outside the 50? All quite laughable.

But at least it prompted me to start thinking about my own choices, and encouraged me to compile my list. At the outset, I will explain that it contains several albums that were not released this year – in fact, in at least one case, not even this century. However, they are all albums that are new to me this year, that I had not previously heard until 2009. In the interests of fairness I did try to keep the older ones out of the top 20, and in fact only one managed to sneak in.

I will present the list in full, without comment, and maybe revisit that decision and add a brief note to each one when I have more time.

I’d be more than happy to receive your thoughts on my choices, and your suggestions of glaring omissions.

In the interests of suspense, I will present them in ascending order of merit, from 50 to 1.

Today on “The View” Joy Behar didn’t seem to have a clue what the word “black” has to due with “black Friday”. Luckily Co-host Whoopi Goldberg with all her genius was able to explain to her the meaning of “black Friday”.

GOLDBERG: Oh, hello and welcome to ‘The View.’ Today is Black Friday, all day long,” Goldberg said. “And I’m going to stay black all day because of it.
BEHAR: Isn’t it a little racist to call it Black Friday?
GOLDBERG: Well, I would have called it African American Friday, but that’s taking something away from it.
BEHAR: But there’s a negative connotation to it? Or does it mean something else?
GOLDBERG: No, it’s like when you make all the money – you’re in the black.
BEHAR: So it’s positive?
GOLDBERG: Yeah. It’s in the black, so it’s a huge great thing.
BEHAR: A lot of times, like blackmail is negative, black sheep.
GOLDBERG: Black people.
BEHAR: No, not black people.
GOLDBERG: But it used to be, it used to be.

This whole Adam Lambert thing is ridiculous.

I already wrote about his performance – which I thought was very banal.

Apparently though, everyone else seems to find it so scandalous.

Adam appeared on CBS’s Early Show, and they actually blurred a portion of his performance where he kisses his male keyboardist. REALLY?

Of course when Britney, Madonna, and Christina locked lips and slipped tongue at the 2003 Video Music Awards the show had no problem airing that clip.

Let’s not forget that Adam was on CBS’s Early Show because Good Morning America canceled his performance following the American Music Awards.

Their reason for canceling, “Given his controversial live performance on the AMAs, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning,” said an ABC spokesman.

REALLY? I seem to remember Janet Jackson performed “Rock with U” on GMA and that was after the whole Super Bowl exposed nipple controversy. Oh and Janet’s partner in crime, Justin Timberlake has also performed in GMA. Not to mention, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears performed on the morning show after making out with Madonna.

ABC also claims it has received complaints about the AMA performance.

Of course GLAAD has come out to criticize GMA’s decision – as the organization should.

I have grown up watching women make out on television. It seemed there was a whole period of time where every show was having women make out to raise ratings – Ally McBeal, Friends (twice), L.A. Law, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Roseanne, The O.C., and those are just the ones I could think of.

And I know this isn’t television, but movies are the same way. There was so much hype and anticipation over Wild Things and Cruel Intentions. The kiss between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair even won Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards. And  let’s be real, even this year, the main public discussion surrounding the movie Jennifer’s Body was about the make out session between Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried.

Anyway, the one thing this whole incident has done is reaffirm my love of Barbara Walters.

Also, I don’t know what Elisabeth and Sherry are talking about with the whole reaching up a female performer’s skirt and grabbing at her, I keep rewatching his performance, and cannot figure out where they are getting that from. I feel like I would notice that, and be angry about it. Anyway here is The View talking about it…

Sure simulated oral sex may be tasteless, but censoring the kissing is ridiculous and completely offensive. Don’t tell me gay men kissing is inappropriate – regardless of what time of day it is. And really the simulated oral sex is the same antic Madonna has pulled while performing at award shows. This isn’t new, so I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal. I stick with my original critique, his performance was boring and cliche.

This is how you make simulated oral sex interesting. This is Madonna from 19 years ago, and she doesn’t just get some action once – but twice.

I’m listening to Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys (awesome song). Miss Keys was playing in Rockefeller Plaza this weekend when I was in New York City. It is that kind of event that makes you realize that this is where everything is happening. In my entire life I have been to this city seven times, and every time I go there it is a completely different experience. Ironically, I am more free in New York than I am in Toronto, and I am a Canadian. Maybe I should move. Anyway, here is a list of some cool things I did this weekend.

The Apollo Theater

My wife and I took the subway to Harlem, getting off at 125th and Malcolm X Blvd. For some reason I was surprised by how many Starbucks there were. I was also a little surprised by how small The Apollo Theater is on the outside. There is so much history here I just assumed there would be a big gift shop and a huge outer-facade (is that even a word?). There is a tour you can go on that we couldn’t do because there was a matinee performance of Dreamgirls (I saw the original on Broadway).

2. We walked the entire length of Central Park

For the first time I walked the entire length of Central Park from Harlem to the Upper West Side. Next to Stanley Park in Vancouver this is the nicest park in the world. It barely seemed like any time went by, but we walked miles. We watched people skating, saw a turtle, witnessed a wedding and watched two jazz trios. I kept remembering all of the movies I have seen that take place in this park (mostly Woody Allen movies).

3. Angelo’s Pizza (Next to the Letterman studios)

New York has six million people, but we actually bumped into my family at this restaurant. Maybe it was because I wouldn’t shut up about how great it is. We all sat at Madonna’s table right there in the front window. We also ate at a few Italian restaurants with more nouveau cuisine, but there is something about the basics that will work forever. Good tomato sauce, white bread, cheese, pepperoni and spaghetti done in an old fashioned New York Italian style. The last time we ate here my wife talked to David Letterman shortly afterwards.

4. The Empire State Building

One night we went up to the top of the Empire State Building. It seemed to be going through a cloud and it was snowing even though on the ground there was no snow. It was still a great view and we were able to see people practicing for the Macy’s Parade. Interesting factoid: the observatory that is further up was supposed to be a waiting room for zeppelin balloons.

Well we didn’t get to watch the parade but we did see them practicing. There is always something happening in this town.

6. We stayed near Times Square

WHAT TIME IS IT?!!!

Um…if there is a recession someone forgot to tell Times Square. It was much more crowded then it was two years ago when I was last here. And yet I never felt like I wasn’t safe. And I was mugged here once in the 80s. It is now completely different from the Times Square I was mugged in. It’s all chocolate and toys now. I’ll save my Broadway experience for my next blog, but here is a teaser: GO SEE IN THE HEIGHTS!!!! Also Rihanna played here on Monday morning for Good Morning America. I missed it but my niece saw her.

We stayed at the Westin off of 43rd. Nice comfy beds.

7. The Brooklyn Diner

This is my favorite place to eat in New York. This is an interesting breakfast they have called The Mixed Marriage of Irving and Gina which has challa bread and Italian sausage. It was delicious. I love mixed marriages myself and this was as delicious as my own mixed marriage. I also had pancakes the next day that were also soft and yummy. They serve polenta instead of hash brown.

8. FAO Schwarz

One thing I love about New York is that they are proud of their film history and they take every chance they can to exploit/celebrate that rich culture. Here two FAO Schwarz employees gleefully dance on the piano while dozens look on.

9. Gray Line Tours

We took the Gray Line Downtown tour. This was the only way we could see everything we wanted in the short time we were in the city. The only place we got off the bus was at the WTC site. My father told me that when I was a baby we stood there as they were building the World Trade Centre. In the 80s we both went to the top of the World Trade Center. And now we stand looking at the construction of the Freedom Tower.

10. We didn’t get in to see The View but we did stand in a cold line

Actually this wasn’t a cool thing to do. It was a freakin’ cold thing to do! And we didn’t get in to see The View. We stood in the stand-by line early in the morning. They do give you a complimentary breakfast which is nice. And I did get to see producer Bill Getty walk into work. And I learned that The View is actually filmed in a really ugly building. And they don’t have enough seats, because even people with tickets couldn’t get in. Get a bigger theater Barbara!

Of course the real reason it was so busy and crowded is because it is much cheaper to go to New York City now because of the recession. So there are a lot of deals and I encourage you to go down and experience the city Toronto can only pretend to be. Most of my immediate family went down to spend some time together and celebrate some birthdays, good health and my sixth wedding anniversary.

The Lord & Taylor Benefit Bash brought out Former NY Yankees player Tino Martinez, The View’s Sherri Shepherd, photographer Alan Batt and celebrity chefs for a good cause, to benefit local New York City charities, on November 10th in the Lord & Taylor flagship store in New York.

Martinez signed copies of the new Official Major League Baseball World Series Film Collection, Shepherd signed copies of her new book, Permission Slips, and photographer Alan Batt, creator of Small Things Savory, was joined by Chefs George Mendez of Aldea, Sue Torres of Suenos and John Delucie of Waverly Inn, who autographed their culinary creations in Batt’s book.

Intro:

I start my adventure into the land of Whoopi today, November 20th 2009.  This day will be written about in history books, and I shall be as highly regarded as Lewis and Clark.  Netflix will be my Sacagawea, my Native American Indian lady leading me through this land of the Whoopi, and we shall embark on this journey as soon as I finish making nachos in the microwave oven.  My Netflix account has a few Whoopi movies lined up, or “queued” to all those familiar with hipster Netflix lingo, for instant viewing, and I have chosen one of the more highly regarded of her films to start with, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” My choice wasn’t simply based on reviews of the movie, it’s just really hard to resist a tagline like, “A man named Jack has got her Jumpin’ and the world may never be the same!”  Though, it also helped that I consider my expedition an adventure, and the film’s full title is Jumpin Jack Flash: An Adventure in Comedy.  It just seemed like a match made in heaven, or at least an uninteresting coincidence.

For those of you who do not know the story of Jumpin’ Jack Flash here is a summary of the plot from Netflix filled in with thoughts from yours truly:

Terry, played by Whoopi Goldberg (YAY WHOOPI!), is a banker with an international clientele, gets a cryptic message from an unknown source. After decoding the missive (The fucks a missive?), Terry finds herself in the middle of an international espionage ring with bodies piling up faster than the line at a faulty ATM machine (What does this even mean!? Did someone write a joke in the summary you will only understand after you watch the movie?  Son of a bitch…). Directed by Penny Marshall, this riotous comedy also stars Annie Potts, Carol Kane, Jeroen Krabbe and Roscoe Lee Browne (Who were never heard from again, except for Penny, who partied with the Fonz, and therefore is immortal…Google it)

My predictions:

Whoopi is going to get herself into a whole heap of trouble, and she’s inviting me on her laugh riot adventure into the mystical world of banking!  This is going to be a fun trip!  As far as plot points go, I predict there will be a faulty ATM machine…Also, the movie was made in 1986, and during this time period whenever there’s an “international espionage ring” of some kind, it simply means the Russians are going to fuck shit up.  Yes, so the movie is going to playing like a banker’s version of Red Dawn, without the nice glutes of Patrick Swayze, or the whole ‘Russians invading the United States’ thing.  And so, these Commie bastards are going to fuck up Whoopi’s ATM machines, and she’s going to be all like, “AWWW HELL NO!”  Then, she’s going to fly over to Russia, and just start punching people in the face.

Jon Lovitz Loves His Banking Job!

00:05:49 – Entered work, which is surprisingly a bank…She works with ancient computers, which nowadays are on par with our most intelligent paper weights.  Jon Lovitz is in this movie!  First line, “You ready to saddle up and ride this software?”  Classic.

00:08:22 – Phil Hartman too?  “You could crush bowling balls between those thighs.” Classic #2.  Comedians are funny.

00:11:59 – Jumping Jack Flash sent her a message on her computer!  It said “Yankee Pot Roast Was Delicious.”  Confused by message, and suddenly in the mood for pot roast.

00:15:56 – Whoopi rocking out to the Rolling Stones in her penguin slippers, you go girl!  “Jagger Step!”

00:16:41 – Whoopi thinks second verse of Jumpin’ Jack Flash is “I was raised by two lesbians.” And then says “Lesbians? Com’n Mick!  Fuck a duck!”  Oh boy!  This may be the greatest movie ever made!

00:29:21 – JACK IS BRITISH INTELLIGENCE!  Gosh Whoopi, the things you get yourself into

00:31:24 – Jim Belushi?  Really?  Movie just lost all credibility.  I’m now crying in fetal position yelling, “WHAT HAVE THEY DONE WITH MY BABY!?” at the heavens

00:35:33 – She stole a frying from Jack’s apartment, and is now being held at gunpoint by…Jim Belushi.  I’m now back in my corner crying again in the fetal position yelling “IT WAS ONLY ONE TIME!  IT WAS JUST ONE TIME!” to the heavens.

00:35:55 – She knocked him out with the frying pan; I’m slowly recovering from my Jim Belushi trauma

00:37:00 – There’s people’s names and numbers etched in to bottom of frying pan, and she’s totally calling them!

00:38:10 – “Oh this is great!  I’m down here 1:30 in the morning at the docks!  I should just pin a 100 dollar bill on my ass and scream ‘VICTIM HERE!  VICTIM HERE!’”

00:40:27 – Hahahaha she just got pushed off the dock into the Hudson River, she’s going to be super dirty when she gets out.  You can’t scrub that shit off with soap and water, stuff in that river is highly advanced dirty dirt

00:41:04 – She can’t swim!  She can only doggy paddle!  It’s so cute!

00:41:41- “What is it with you people? Every time you see a black woman there has to be a pimp or a john? What, do you think there’s good business on the pier for hookers? Do you think I’m giving blow jobs down there to goldfish?”

Whoopi Suddenly Turns White!

00:46:10 – “The K mother fucking GB?”  It’s the RUSSIANS!  They’re fucking shit up!

00:55:44 – Big stunt scene where Whoopi is falling off a roof, and when they cut to a shot of her back as she struggles to climb back on the roof, and she is suddenly white, and very muscular.  Must be some kind of super power, thus proving again…Whoopi is super.

00:58:55 – Whoopi’s dress is caught in a paper shedder!  Oh the hilarity of your situation Whoopi!

01:12:30 – Russian guy stole a tow truck and started towing a phone booth Whoopi was in across town…and I have to pee really badly

01:13:53 – Back from bathroom and…OH GOD NO!  NOT JIM BELUSHI AGAIN!  All those horrible repressed memories of According To Jim surfacing…and Blues Brothers 2000…and K-9!  SOMEONE MAKE THEM GO AWAY!

01:26:14 – She got shot in the ass with a tranquilizer, and I’m officially bored.

Afterward:

Almost all my predictions were wrong.  There was no broken ATM, it was nothing like Red Dawn, nor even it’s lesser-known sequel Steel Dawn.  Whoopi didn’t fly to Russia either and slap some bitches, which definitely would have been a much better ending.  In my defense though, Netflix fucking lied to me!  “…with bodies piling up faster than the line at a faulty ATM machine…”  Bodies?  There were no bodies!  There was A body!  One!  Singular!  Uno!  And what’s with the horrible comparison to a broken ATM machine?  It makes no frigin’ sense, and has nothing to do with the actual movie.

Also with her crotch biting abilities no one would mess with her.  Though I do believe the crotch biting was simply to bring in a feminist perspective of the world to a high action comedy.  The movie is all about a woman taking charge of her own life no matter what gets thrown in her path.  She is, by definition, a bra burning, humpback, raving feminist demanding respect from the “man” that’s holding her down.  With KGB agents, the “man” in this situation, after her, she knows she will overcome, and save Jumping Jack Flash’s life.  She will do whatever it takes, even if that means taking a few balls in the mouth for the team.

I would highly suggest this movie to anyone who loves rocking out in penguin slippers to Rolling Stones tunes, or, like me, Scooby Doo slippers rocking out the Mamma Mia soundtrack.  I believe it won every single Academy award for the year of 1986, and is banned in 6 nations.  The banning from other countries actually is fairly recent, because Star Jones made them do it after her furious fury of a rampage when she got booted off the View.  Not wanting to be eaten by Star Jones, these countries just agreed to ban anything to do with Star’s replacement, Whoopi Goldberg.  For those of us that are fans of Whoopi though, I have great news.  President Barack Theodore Winston Obama has announced that he is making the members of the View the 4th branch of the US Government, due to Whoopi’s ability to deal with international affairs, as proven through “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”  It is a happy ending for everyone now!  YAY!

Stick to movies with scripts… Stand up is not your bag… smh

She is a colombian actress that started off modeling and acting at 17 years old. This week she was on THE VIEW.  she is in her late 30’s. she has an 18 yr old son, when asked about being a young mom she laughed and said i was raped..but never confirmed if that was actually true which makes for a controversial uproar in the media and fanbase world

Post show she was caught by TMZ who attempted to get her to speak on the rape comment, she simply laughed them off..it has not been confirmed or denied as of yet.

 A few years ago she interviewed with a famous comedian Chelsea Handler and on that show she was saying how her son (manolo 16 at the time) was mean to her and made fun of her accent saying she sounds like tony montana. Chelsea goes on to mimick her accent and try to get her to speak “american” it was all in good fun. Sofia is a bit of a comedian herself watch this.

Anna-I’m surprised I like her as a singer as much as I do. My expectations weren’t very high simply because, when an actor turns singer (or singer turns actor) it’s usually best not to expect much…especially when they’re from Disney, but I’m impressed. She did really well when I saw her open for Push Play and this is amazing for being so sick.

Por ejemplo, que tal de “iluminada y atinada” resulta ser Sofía Vergara, diciendo el miercoles que “fui violada a los 13 años” en el programa matutino “The view”.
Obviamente la bromita se le paso de tueste, porque una de las conductoras del panel, la tambien actriz Whoopi Goldberg se echaba un garraspeo de “no macayu”, el público presente abucheó a la colombiana y muchos de plano pensaron que la Vergara se fue de bruces con tremendo comentario….Sofía Vergara fue invitada a ese talk-show de la televisión estadounidense, que se caracteriza por contar con un panel exclusivamente femenino: Goldberg, Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck y Sherri Shepherd.

Todo iba bien, como en una reunión de amigas: Sofía hablaba de su carrera y de sus logros… hasta que a Shepherd se le ocurrió mencionar que, a sus 39 años, la actriz colombiana es madre de un adolescente de 18 años…”Es horrible”, bromeó la actriz. “No puedo mentir sobre mi edad, porque sacan la cuenta…”.
“Bueno, lo tuviste a los… 12 años”, añadió Sheperd, como ofreciéndole una coartada al asunto de la edad. Por supuesto, la estrella latina lo tuvo su hijo a los 19, con su entonces esposo, Joe González. Pero Sofía mejoró la versión: “A los 13. Me violaron”. El público del programa soltó un “Ohhhh” de la impresión, y Whoopi casi se atora de nervios. Pero ahí no quedó todo: muchos ya le piden a Sofía una disculpa formal. “Tiene que disculparse con todas las mujeres en el mundo que han pasado por algo tan horrible como una violación”, opina una usuaria disgustada en YouTube.

Otro que de plano acepta que la regó y gacho, fue Bobby Larios, arrepentidisimo hasta las chanclas por haberse casado con Niurka Marcos, “Tú no te imaginas cómo me arrepiente de haber conocido a esta mujer y de haberme casado con ella. Te lo digo desde el fondo de mi corazón”, aseguró el actor.

Y todo porque la asistencia de Larios fue cancelada días antes del famoso y controversial desfile “de modas” que Mitzy realizaba contando con la “finisima y exquisita” participación de Niurka, afirmando que les causaba “miedo” su llegada al evento.

Una brillante y estupidisima aprovecha-viejitos, por no decir otra cosa, es Margaret Lanuza, la controversial jovencita guatemalteca de quien se dijo que era amante de Joan Sebastian, ahora resulta que hizo declaraciones donde explicó su relación con el cantante y las razones por las cuales regresó a Guatemala. Según tenía que terminar la preparatoria, pero amenzara con regresar a México, porque trabajará con Joan Sebastian, “Como cualquier pareja, hay un momento en el que llegas a hablar de matrimonio porque piensas a futuro, nosotros sí lo hicimos, pero eso con el tiempo se verá”, dijo Lanuza.

Asimismo, Margareth afirmó que le gustaría reservar su virginidad para el cantante: “Me gustaría que él me quitara la virginidad, porque estoy enamorada, además de que ya soy mayor de edad; por ahora me estoy guardando para él, pero eso sólo el tiempo y las circunstancias lo decidirán”. Lanuza habló sobre la relación que llevaba con Joan Sebastian durante el tiempo que vivió en México, dando a conocer que su primer beso de amor se lo dio Joan Sebastian y fue “un beso apasionado”. “Cuando hay amor de verdad, no importan las circunstancias. A veces los problemas nos hacen ver qué tan fuerte es el sentimiento que tienes hacia la otra persona”…chale.

I’m usually not ready for a discussion on rape before my first cup of coffee, and when it comes to making jokes about sexual assault – I’m never ready.

With that said, you can imagine my horror when I was taking some time to enjoy The View and actress Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) made a “joke” about being raped as a child.

I was going to write about the awkward rape comment, but I think this Open Letter to the Ladies of The View nails it pretty well.

So, don’t you just love when people laugh about rape? It’s just fucking hilarious isn’t it? And what a great time to laugh about rape with the recent gang rape in Richmond, CA? And don’t you love how everyone just laughed about it? And how Vergara tried to kind of brush it off once it was said, saying a kind of “noooo” under her breath? The only person who seemed actually shocked that she said it was Whoopi Goldberg.

This kind of shit is not appropriate. Jokes about rape make it seem like not such a serious crime, and allows for it to remain so prevalent in our world. So, next time you somehow feel compelled to tell a rape joke, shut the fuck up!

One of my favorite shows and favorite hosts of all time is Bill O’Reilly of Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor, which I almost never fail to miss, and haven’t for the last few years.

I’m pretty convinced that if you just watched the show, no matter what side you are on or whether you agree or disagree with his viewpoints, that you’d have an enjoyable time. I’ve had many experiences in watching it where people and friends were over who didn’t watch the show or could care less, and they’d be laughing and have come around to why the show is so great (ratings-wise it’s untouched, for good reason).

Anyhoo, recently Bill appeared on The View, a show he’s appeared on about once a year or so since his book before his current one (Culture Warrior) came out. When Bill goes on these shows now which are almost always lopsided liberal, he pretty much knows what he’s getting. By now he is pretty much into the grove, lets things roll off his shoulder, and goof’s around (sometimes a bit too much). Which I think is a good way to approach a show like The View which is anything but fair and balanced (one conservative in a sea of liberals, as always with media).

I also think he is very smart to come on these shows, hold his own, and ultimately make more people aware of who he really is, what he really believes in, what he stands for, and what he is really like live and in-person and facing these pinheads one on one.

While Palin and porn were the “hot topics” on The View today, the ladies were a colorful bunch sitting around their famous coffee table. Elisabeth Hasselbeck donned the gorgeous Selma Brooch Cuff from Stella & Dot today, along with a statement-making, long pearl necklace (see, who says you can’t wear two statement pieces at once??).
