The Virgins, aren’t as pure as the driven snow. No, they’re the kind that people have trampled over, where the dirt has been dug up and one which you know is a heralder for the beginning of a dirty weekend. These dirty boys bring about a love for filthy fights and bathroom sex. Representing the youthful, fun and grimy underbelly of both New York’s elite and street punks, The Virgins have melded their sound of rocky guitars and old-fashioned New Wave sensibility, managing to craft the perfect set of catchy pop songs.

On tour promoting their self-titled debut, a debut met with resounding attention after some of their songs debuted on the popular teen show “Gossip Girl.” I spoke to singer Donald Cumming about how life is on the road, the inspiration behind some of their catchiest tunes and the most perpetual question of all: Is a night with the boys as dirty as they say it is?

Alma Verdejo: How do you acclimate to the touring?

Donald Cumming: We’ve been on tour for the last year and a half. We’re pretty used to it. We get a week or two off. For the most part, though, we stay on the road.

So, you guys are pros at this then? You know how many hours of sleep you can get by with?

Actually it’s never really successful [sleep]. You kind of learn that [nothing can be done at] any specific amount at anytime.

The consensus is that you guys met on a photo shoot in Mexico for Ryan McGinley. Is there anything else you want to add that?

We, actually, met a week before in a Manhattan bar called Sweet Vicious when the Yankees went against the Red Sox. The only thing I can remember was rooting for the Red Sox, I don’t remember why. But, they won.
And we were hanging out with Punk Rock Jake, a friend of ours, he was wearing this homemade Yankees shirt which said “Fuck Boston.” And the bar was being run by “We are the Weapon,” and they’re from Boston, so it was interesting.

So, we all kind of sat around and watched the game. And that’s how I really met Wade. Then four or five days later we were going to Mexico. The two meetings were completed in one week.

So, is it true that you have to be a native New Yorker to be in the band?

No [decisively], not at all. They [magazinez] can weigh that we’re all born in Manhattan but that’s more of a coincidence.

How do you pass the time on tour?

Mostly reading and playing music. It depends on what we’re touring in and right now we’re in a bus so we’ve been writing a lot of songs. Sleeping very comfortably and just enjoying ourselves, which is really sweet because we’ve just come from a six week tour in Europe and we traveled in a van. And that is a lot more…, it’s just a lot; you relax a lot less.

Do you guys sing “The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round?”

No. [laughs] We may though. But yesterday everyone got tattoos.

Was it of the same tattoo? Did you get one?

No, I didn’t get one. People got different ones; they woke up [this morning] and compared tattoos.
Lissy got a tattoo, and then Kevin our drummer and then Paul – our bass player – also got a tattoo.
I was listening to your album under heavy rotation and a lot of these songs make me wonder: What is the inspiration behind them? They always seem like they deal with women, like “Rich Girls” or just with a lifestyle like in “One Week of Danger.” Are these songs that are based on real people or are they just songs that come to you and you feel the need to write them?

I prefer to leave some of them to interpretation, at least for the time being. I haven’t scrounged my thoughts for some good answers.

Any new songs that you’re writing that are working with this exiting theme of the last album?
We like to play covers and follow that, but there really isn’t anything new. We’re trying to debate whether or not incorporate new material into the sets we play or just wait until the tour is over and then work in a new album. Wait and play when there’s more of it; when it’s more done. But we’ll see; it depends on what happens.

I know that you guys are coming here. Any preconceived notions about Texas, especially since I’m not aware that you’ve been here?

Actually, one of our favorite shows we ever did was in Amarillo, Texas. We were opening up for Jet and it was our first tour. I’d only read lots of stuff [about Texas] like this book “12 Days on The Road” by The Sex Pistols. It’s about their only American tour, in the South, and they played rodeos, just like not so many traditional venues – like, they only played one in San Francisco.

So we were kind of expecting really tough cowboys – we didn’t really know what to expect – and Jet is like a really heavy rock band. But the audience was so cool and they were so energetic and it was one of the best shows we’ve every played, having fun. It was one of the most fun shows. It was a great surprise. We all love Texas; Austin is a lot of fun.

Do you find that we actually dance more than New Yorkers?

Yeah, you do. New Yorkers are just too self-conscious.

The video “Rich Girls,” is that a typical party night for you guys?

It was originally conceived as a really typical night, which is just a bunch of dudes getting really drunk, but it was suggested, by a few people, that it wasn’t going to be interesting enough for a video. So, we had the foresight to invite the hotties of Victoria Secret’s [to make the video].
She came and hung out with us and it was really good idea; her presence made it not a “typical” night for us. It’s really just not like that but it was a lot of fun.

Okay, referring to another music video “Teen Lovers.” Now, this looks like a cautionary tale, where did you guys get this video idea?

I don’t know, the music video was really the director’s interpretation of the song. That video wasn’t any like the others, where we just sort of just showed up and did what we were told. I don’t know the link of the song with the video.

[Now] The song, when we were writing it, we were in Ohio on tour and a friend of us, Alex, told us a story about a girl he saw on the subway and it hadn’t really spoken. He saw that she had written this thing on him, on Craigslist on a forum called Missed Connections, and she wrote to him “You on the C train, between Bedford, and whatever. You were wearing a hat and write me back.”

So, we were looking at the posts [on Craigslist] and just looking at their missed connections and I started to think about my life, how I had come close [to certain things] and sort of not found the courage to do something exciting.

A lot of your success has been in the UK and Europe as opposed to the U.S. Would you recommend for bands to start off in the UK?

I don’t know. We put out our record six or seven months before in the U.S. than in the U.K. and we toured in the U.S. before that. We didn’t tour in the UK ’til later and the album wasn’t released ’til about a year later because the record label had to get their ducks in a row. So, I really don’t know. I mean, I don’t know that anyone does it consciously; it just might be a different reception, perception [in the UK].
The thing is we didn’t go to [Europe] first, it just caught on there.

Okay, last question: Three words to describe your show.

I don’t know. A transcendental confrontation?

Ah les américains ne cesseront jamais de nous faire rêver,la preuve avec The Virgins. Découvert en France avec leur titre Rich Girl, ils ont déjà conquis le continent américain depuis bien longtemps.Pour ma part, je les ai découvert dans la série Gossip Girl avec leur single One week of danger…et depuis, j’adore.

Cependant, petite appréhension concernant l’album. En effet, quand j’ai entendu She’s expensive pour la première fois, je me suis crue en train d’écouter le groupe Fall Out Boy tant les musiques étaient similaire, mais heureusement le groupe s’est vite rattrapé avec des morceaux comme Private affair ou Love is colder than death. Enfin bon, j’ai vraiment passé un bon moment avec ces New Yorkais, et il ne me tarde qu’une chose…les voir sur scène (en espérant ne pas être déçue).

En attendant, aucune date de sortie prévue, concernant la sortie d’un nouvel album. Il ne nous reste plus qu’à prendre notre mal en patience.

Heyho, Science People!

Glad but sad to know that i’m already 24 years old now. I already in a mature-age (even not yet to be a women-then, who cares? I’m not ;p). When i was 14, i really wanna havemyself to be 24 years old. I didnt know why. Maybe trapped in the mid of school madness routinity was really so bored eventhough i was quite a good student. I was think, it looks so cool to be a worker, i mean a magazine editor (oh… this is so really my dream, Science People). Hahaha… but now? I wanna turn my life back to 10 years ago. When there’s no a ‘big bag’ in my back. Forget about ‘if i could turn back the time’ now. Its only wasting my time even its so excited to be talked.

Yesterday, 17 November 2009 was my birthday. But for this moment, i didnt feel any special things in my heart. Almost more than 200 notifications at my facebook account, some at twitter, sms, YM, BBM, email and some calls to say happy birthday. I really appriciated those things, guys! Thank you… But, i really sorry to feel ‘unspecial’ for that things. Even, I prefered to come home early (after working) than my previous birthday.

Maybe i was in PMS. Maybe i still had a scar of sadness inside that slowly but sure, whether i recognise it or not, it still present. Maybe i didnt know anything about my life now. Oh its so really suck. Shit!

Maybe this is the reason that while her bf is on tour he takes other girls out to dinner and insists that they add him to BBM and punches his number in their cell phones. Just sayin’.

On Sunday, knockturnal and I had the chance to hang out with New York band The So So Glos before they headed off to Paris to embark on a European tour with The Virgins. They were really nice and we had a good chat about dubstep with Ryan Levine, who I think is the singer. I’m not sure. He was a super nice guy regardless.

“If we could be remixed by anyone, I’d say Caspa,” he explained. “I’m doing my best [to get in to dubstep] – but being over there, there’s nothing there, right. There’s one night a month in New York, it’s called Dubwars.”

“I’m more in to Skinnyman,” Matt Elkin told us. “He’s more like true roots, underground hip hop, sampled like New York shit, you know what I mean?” Um, do you mean this guy, who’s originally from Leeds? If so - nice. From the moors to the masses.

This is a pretty nice remix of one of their tracks, it’s far more low-fi than anything you’d find on their mini album Terrorism/Tourism which you can download for free.

The So So Glos - 99 Degrees (Ninjasonik Remix)

Matt also suggested we check out some ‘dirty south’ which apparently is ‘the closest thing we have to dubstep’. Um have to disagree on that, considering as to the best of my knowledge it’s hip hop from the southern states of America. So stuff like Chingy and  Lil Jon. I’m not ashamed to say that I fucking love Lil Jon and I’m gonna rinse this chance to present this classic Lil Jon clip. Yeeeeeeeeah!

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Boxer nor did I see the big attraction to the National until this song came out.  The lyrics are perfectly understated and performed, with a creative arrangement and a sentiment that everyone can identify with, it doesn’t hurt that the melody is so damn catchy as well

Fine For Now- Grizzly Bear

Veckatimest, the latest album by Grizzly Bear is full of songs that range from the sweet to the bizarre, Fine for Now starts off with a strangely beautiful vocal arrangement before turning into an otherworldly meld of guitar and drums and vocals, truly a song worth multiple listens

Chinese Translation- M. Ward

M. Ward has a knack for great studio production and melody, and this has a great chorus, and no theres no chinese in a single second of the recording, just a great overall song

Lost Coastlines- Okkervil River

I love the vocalist in this band, his range is affecting and his lyrics are well written, and i can hear glimmers of Paul Simons Graceland and the Jam’s Town Called Malice woven in

We Were Sick- The Thermals

Like Blink 182, fun upbeat and catchy, but better because you don’t get tired of the nasal voice and the chord progression is classic

Race You- Elizabeth and the Catapults

Little known bands often provide the most happiness to the listener when they make great catchy songs, because you feel like you’re the one discovering them, it’s a little feistish and happy and just puts you in a good mood

Wilco (The Song)- Wilco

Love this song, a little weezerish but with less pop culture reliant lyrics

Take A Walk Around the Table- White Rabbits

This song is so delightfully weird that you can’t help but listen to it over and over again

Metal Detektor- Spoon

Of all the great Spoon songs there are to choose from, this is one of, if not their finest songs ever put to record

Golden- My Morning Jacket

Beautiful acoustic guitar, beautiful singing, beautiful lyrics, need i even say more

The Golden Age- Beck

Great progression and arrangement, both of which Beck has an undeniable knack for and this is one of his finer songs

This is one of those songs that feels as if the performer is right in front of you not in some far off studio and the buildup is wonderful

The Honeymoon Song- The Beatles

It’s hard to find a Beatles song that the whole world hasn’t heard millions of times.  This one comes from Live at the BBC and the arrangment lets Paul McCartneys voice take front and center, and how sweet and young he sounds, the only bad thing is the song ends so soon

Honeymoon- Phoenix

Love every part about this song, the bass, the guitar, the singing, the build up, it works perfectly

Everything Hits At Once- Spoon

Another early Spoon song, undeniably their own, from the arrangment to the melody and the buildup as well the great guitar and piano hooks

Fernando Pando- The Virgins

this son builds from intimate guitar and vocals to a great energetic arrangement.  Terrific vocal performance throughout

Changes- David Bowie

Because this song is undeniable in its classic status, love the progression and the lyrics

A Day in the Life- The Beatles

Arguably the greatest song Lennon and McCartney put together from the arrangement to the lyrics to the orchestra build up and McCartneys part.  Also the interplay between the musicians is great, McCartney’s piano and Lennon’s guitar and Ringo’s drums couldn’t have fit any better

You Got the Silver- The Rolling Stones

this song goes a long way in saying that Keith Richards was as underrated a singer and songwriter as Harrison was in The Beatles.

A driving, energetic song:

Some stills captured from the footage shot on the day we had the car mount.  Since the camera was located out of reach outside the passenger side window, we would not stop it between takes and would instead continue rolling while we set up for the next pass, often getting “room tone” or just the actors staying in character – or, as those who buy the DVD will see in the behind-the-scenes footage, Kristi and Carrie Anne singing Alanis Morissette and “Hotel California”, as well as Cyrus the sound guy telling the editor to take a break and get a drink of water (knowing that in the future he will be going through these clips).

(well technically that middle one won’t be in the film since it is too “hot” in regards to the light, but it’s still a cool image)

Most regular guys won’t dance.  It’s just not their bag.  They like to wallpaper the edge of a dancefloor, beer in hand, preferring their musical appreciation to be represented by a foot tap or an occasional head bop.  But hipster boys are another breed because they seem to overtake the dancefloor.  Perhaps their pants are so tight, they need to keep moving for fear of circulation loss in their legs.  This is hypothetical of course.  They really like Electronica or dancey indie rock and they like to show it.  These are my observations from concerts where I have witnessed such occurrences (see/ Hot Chip or The Strokes).

I had the opportunity to help put on a FABULOUS event with PAPER Magazine and HP to celebrate PAPER and HP’s 25th Anniversary in the business of printing.

To celebrate its 25th birthday, PAPER and HP partnered for a swank soiree at the New York Public Library at Bryant Park to kick off Fashion Week this evening. And to top off the evening, the one and only Liza Minelli took us home to “New York, New York.” 

As an added bonus, Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream and cake was served and it was quite scrumptious!

It was a true New York moment for this midwestern gal who moved to the city four years ago and one I will treasure for a lifetime.

A French Dreamboat is all I can say about Sebastian Tellier. This song will make you think about past loves, experiences and people. Then you will float. Wake up on a sunday morning, hung as hell, flick this on your iTunes, and the 6 jagers and countless lemon drops that were consumed previous will be forgotten as easy as the night before. I know this track has been circulating for a while now but why can’t everyone enjoy this beautiful piece? Some other equally calming tunes have been posted too, so you may need a red bull to keep your heart rate up.
