No, no me he equivocado al contar los años porque no hablo de ese muro del que todos hablan últimamente (yo incluido). Me refiero a uno de los grandes discos de la música moderna: “The Wall” el trabajo publicado por Pink Floyd hace hoy exactamente treinta años.

1979 fue un año fundamental. No sólo en mi vida, aunque por aquel entonces yo no lo sabía y no lo supe hasta muchos años después, sino también en el ámbito musical. Si te apasiona la música moderna y alguna vez posas tus manos sobre una máquina del tiempo, te aconsejo que comiences visitando este año, concretamente en el Reino Unido. Aunque sólo sea por hacerte con una copia original de algunos de los discos publicados en este año, como, por ejemplo, “Unknown Pleasures” de Joy Division, la segunda edición del disco homónimo de The Undertones (que ya incluía el clásico “Teenage Kicks”, sacralizado por el pope musical John Peel), “London Calling” de The Clash o, por supuesto, el disco que hoy celebra su treintena: “The Wall” de Pink Floyd. Ahí es nada.

Sostengo la teoría de que a finales de la década de los setenta debió ocurrir algún alineamiento de astros, o algún misterioso alquimista ejecutó un conjuro en busca de su propia riqueza y, como algo colateral (o quizás porque pronunció mal alguna palabra o cometió un error en las dosis de los productos a utilizar), se desencadenó una efervescencia cultural y musical que, en mi modesta opinión, no se ha vuelto a repetir. No sólo por los discos publicados, sino por las tendencias que surgieron y de las que, a día de hoy, los actuales grandes nombres de la música siguen alimentándose. Hablamos del punk o del “new wave”, sí, pero también del hip hop y de la música electrónica, por poner algunos ejemplos.

Así que, si aceptáis esta personalísima opinión, supongo que uno de los discos más vendidos durante esa época (y después: según Roger Waters siguen produciéndose al año hasta cuatro millones de copias) bien merece que celebremos su trigésimo aniversario.

“The Wall” es un trabajo conceptual que de entrada puede resultar incluso demasiado obvio. Una ópera rock que narra la vida del exitoso músico Pink (un remedo del propio Waters) que, no obstante, se siente prisionero de sus traumas, enfermedades, adicciones y, cómo no, de su propio éxito. Toda una estructura en la que se incluye la estricta educación británica y que, por tanto, cómo no, se constituyó diez años después como un lógico himno de la caída del muro de Berlín: esa lucha de un hombre contra toda una estructura alienante que le oprime es una cómoda metáfora del totalitarismo comunista. Qué triste ha sido comprobar que, a pesar del brote de esperanza que surgió en 1989, con la caída de ese muro, otros muchos, invisibles pero mucho más difíciles de derribar, se levantaron.

Aunque no es mi disco favorito de los Pink Floyd, “The Wall” es un gran disco, uno de los mejores de la banda, con una fuerte influencia reconocida en grupos como Oasis o Smashing Pumpkins, por sólo citar algunos, y que se ha visto en cierto modo reflejado en trabajos posteriores de artistas tan dispares como Marilyn Manson cuyo “Antichrist Superstar” no deja de ser una versión oscura y psicotrópica de la idea conceptual del disco de los británicos. Más psicotrópica, quiero decir.

Sin duda, más allá de la leyenda y del mito que este doble LP supone, está el impresionante sonido que viaja brillantemente a través de los temas del disco y refleja con nitidez la tortuosa historia de su protagonista. Fue además uno de los primeros trabajos que incorporó los efectos de sonido, muchos de ellos grabados personalmente por los propios músicos y algunos, según los rumores, con curiosos significados, como el efecto de llamada telefónica de “Run Like Hell”, que supuestamente recuerda a una anécdota del propio Waters durante una gira: llamó a su mujer y contestó una voz de hombre. Se dice también que los coros infantiles de la popular “Another Brick In The Wall” surgieron por la proximidad de un colegio al estudio británico en el que se grabó y que se recurrió precisamente al coro de esa escuela para la grabación.

Muchas leyendas, rumores y también hechos que no distraen de lo fundamental: “The Wall” es uno de los grandes discos de la música contemporánea, con algunos temas que, personalmente (y me consta que no soy el único), remueven por dentro. Hablo de composiciones como las ya mencionadas “Another Brick In The Wall” o “Run Like Hell” y de temas tan demoledores como “Is There Anybody Out There?” (¿soy el único que encuentra similitudes entre parte de esta melodía y la característica de James Bond?), “Hey You” y la joya de la corona: el magnífico “Comfortably Numb”.

En 1982 Alan Parker llevó a cabo una adaptación cinematográfica del disco, con Bob Geldof (que antes de convertirse en activista en busca de la beatificación musical lideró un grupo punk) en el papel de Pink. Una película interesante cuyas animaciones son auténticas obras de arte pero que, no obstante, es recomendable abordar con cuidado. Al fin y al cabo, incluso el propio Roger Waters declaró que constituía un auténtico mazazo para los sentidos.

Os dejo con, en mi opinión, el mejor tema del disco en la versión cinematográfica y con una recomendación: aprovechad el trigésimo cumpleaños de “The Wall” y regalaros una escucha completa de todo el disco. No hay mejor forma de celebrar la vigencia de una obra de arte.

Dopo 30 anni dall’uscita, The Wall continua a dividere i fan dei Pink Floyd: c’è chi lo considera un capolavoro, c’è chi lo trova un ripiego commerciale. I primi video di questo doppio concept album li ho visti su Italia 1, nei primi anni ‘80, all’interno del programma cult DJ Television, orchestrato da Claudio Cecchetto. Io faccio parte dei primi, quelli che lo considerano un piccolo gioiello, con la consapevolezza che i Pink Floyd si fermano qui. David Gilmour era la musica, Roger Waters l’anima letteraria della band. Ogni volta che riascolto The Wall  in vinile, mi sembra di individuare altri spunti riflessivi. Al di là che il disco sia diventato il simbolo del Muro di Berlino, mi pare che gli assilli di Waters siano ancora molto attuali: alienazione e solitudine. Nonostante i social network stiano cambiando il nostro approccio ai rapporti interpersonali, quei due stati d’animo continuano  a dannare pure la generazione di YouTube, che ascolta musica con la voracità di chi vuole consumare a tutti i costi. La partitura  di The Wall, nonostante sia roba del 1979, sembra musica scritta ieri, pronta a legare le ombre della storia ai paradossi del presente. Qundo da ragazzino ho ascoltato l’album, il giorno dopo non sono stato più lo stesso dietro i banchi di scuola: ribelle al nozionismo, allergico all’imposizione del “precettore” modello. E poi si dice che un disco non ti possa cambiare la vita, anche se in parte. Riascoltandolo in occasione di questo compleanno speciale, ho ritrovato la vera spiritualità di The Wall: la presa di coscienza che ognuno ha i suoi muri, che lo rendono prigioniero dello scorrere della vita. Perché esserene indifferenti? Perchè non abbattere le barriere e sovrapporre più stati d’animo? Ci vuole coraggio e sacrificio, ma la vit può tornare a sorriderci.

Pink Floyd, wie is er niet mee opgegroeid? Sterker nog, wie kent de aanstelijke deuntjes van bijvoorbeeld ‘Money’ en de krachtige teksten op ‘The Wall’ van deze psychedelische rockband niet? ‘Ohne Musik wäre das Leben sinnlos’ zei Friedrich Nietschze eens. Pink Floyd’s The Wall is hiervan hét bewijs!

2009 staat geheel in het teken van 20 jaar val van de Berlijnse Muur. Eerder dit jaar verscheen er in dit kader de opmerkelijke CD ‘Sound of Revolution’. Op dit album staat een verzameling van 20 Oostduitse songs die ieder op geheel eigen wijze iets met de val van de muur in 1989 te maken hebben. De CD werd van de Europese Commissie geproduceerd en ‘Die Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur’ nam hiertoe het initiatief.  Deze cd was onmiddellijk niet meer te verkrijgen, wat bewijst hoe populair dit thema vandaag de dag nog is.

De Berlijnse Muur roept voor velen vandaag de dag nog steeds overwegend negatieve herinneren op. Desondanks of misschien juist wel vanwege de negativiteit is deze muur altijd al een grote bron van inspiratie geweest voor verschillende kunstvormen. Voor filmregisseurs, fotografen, schrijvers, dichters en last but not least, bands en zangers heeft de Berlijnse Muur bewezen een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie te zijn. Dit zien we o.a. terug in de enorme collectie songs, die over de Berlijnse Muur of de Koude Oorlog gaan. Direct of indirect speelt de Berlijnse Muur een belangrijke rol in de muziek. Op het online forum van de Berliner Zeitung wordt in dit kader druk gediscussieerd over een mogelijke ‘Soundtrack van de Berlijnse Muur’. Bestaat er überhaupt zo’n nummer en zo ja, welk nummer krijgt de eer zich de ‘Soundtrack van de Berlijnse Muur’ te noemen? Nummers als ‘Over de Muur’ van Klein Orkest, ‘Zwei Tage in Berlin’ van IFA Wartburg, ‘Nikita’ van Elton John, ‘Wind of Change’ van de Scorpions en heel opvallend het in 2009 verschenen nummer ‘Building a Wall‘ van de Pet Shop Boys worden in deze discussie veel genoemd, maar geen enkel nummer schijnt echt kans te maken op de titel ‘Soundtrack van de Berlijnse Muur’.

Muren zijn niets nieuws in de geschiedenis, echter de Berlijnse Muur was de eerste muur met het doel om de eigen bevolking op te sluiten. De Berlijnse Muur viel op 9 november 1989. 28 jaar, twee maanden en 27 dagen lang deelde de muur een stad, een land en niet te vergeten een heel volk. Dit jaar vieren we de val van deze beruchte muur, een gebeurtenis die zich nog maar 20 geleden heeft voltrokken. In deze 20 jaar is er op het gebied van de muziek veel veranderd, ook in Duitsland is er veel veranderd. Zowel Pink Floyd als de Berlijnse Muur hebben beide veel teweeg gebracht, ieder in hun eigen wereldje. Sterker nog, de Berlijnse Muur en het werk van Pink Floyd lijken wel op een of andere manier met elkaar verbonden. En deze vergelijking gaat verder dan de simpele analogie doet vermoeden.

Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ is meer dan Soundtrack, het is een conceptalbum en een levensverhaal, dat heel goed op de Berlijnse Muur van toepassing is. Ook al heeft Waters, het creatief brein achter ‘The Wall’, met ‘The Wall’ nooit direct de Berlijnse Muur bedoeld, bestaan er wel degelijk overeenkomsten tussen beide muren. Met de bouw van de Berlijnse Muur begon men in 1961. ‘The Wall’ van Pink Floyd verscheen in 1969. Het karakter van de cd is o.a. heel duidelijk door de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de Koude Oorlog beïnvloed. In het concept ‘The Wall’ speelt de filosofie bovendien een centrale rol. Filosofische thema’s als de dood, eenzaamheid, liefde, tijd en verlies komen aan bod. Met de zin ‘Het is niet altijd makkelijk een mens te zijn’, is het gedachtegoed van de Franse auteur en filosoof Albert Camus zeer goed te beschrijven. Het is deze absurdistische en existentialistische filosoof met wie Roger Waters vergeleken wordt. De zojuist genoemde thema’s spelen niet alleen in het leven van Pink een rol, maar ook in het leven van al die mensen die  gescheiden werden door de Berlijnse Muur. De inwoners van Oost-Berlijn waren bang en zagen meestal het leven niet meer zitten, ze leefden in een absurde wereld en hielden er existentialistische ideeën op na. Net als in Pinks leven werd men door de muur beïnvloed.

“All in all, it was all just bricks in the wall”, zingt Roger Waters in ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ (Part 1). Gedurende het album The Wall krijgt de hoofdfiguur Pink met verschillende problemen te maken. Een obstakel is Pinks uiterst beschermende moeder. Zijn misluke huwelijk vinden we terug in ‘Don’t leave me now’ en Waters zingt Ooooh Babe. Don’t leave me now. Don’t say it’s the end of the road. Remember the flowers I sent. I need you Babe. Ook de pesterijen van de leraren op school hebben een diepe indruk achtergelaten en komen terug in “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2): We don’t need no education. We don’t need no thought control. No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Teachers leave them kids alone. Last but zeer zeker not least: de dood van zijn vader in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, welke bezongen wordt in “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 1): Daddy’s flown across the ocean, Leaving just a memory. De stenen waarvan er uiteindelijk zo veel zijn, dat Pink er een muur van bouwt, staan symbool voor deze problemen. In “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 3) is het Pink uiteindelijk allemaal te veel, wat zich vertaalt in de volgende tekst: I don’t need no arms around me. I don’t need no drugs to calm me. I have seen the writing on the wall. Don’t think I need anything at all. En in ‘Goodbye Cruel World” neemt Pink vervolgens afscheid van de wereld. Het bouwen van een muur lijkt in veel gevallen de makkelijkste oplossing. Om deze reden ging men 1961 in Duitsland ook over tot het bouwen van de Berlijnse Muur. Dit leek de makkelijkste oplossing om de eigen bevolking binnen te houden.

Waters ontkent niet dat (een deel van) ‘The Wall’ autobiografisch is. Toch ziet hij ‘The Wall’ meer als iets van alle mensen.

Het was op 21 juli 1990, amper een jaar na de val van de muur, dat The Wall van Pink Floyd een andere, diepere betekenis kreeg. Op 21 juni voerde Roger Waters The Wall in Berlijn op de plaats van de voormalige ‘Todesstreifen’ op. Dit deed hij samen met een groep gedreven muzikanten, waaronder  niemand minder dan Bryan Adams, Cyndi Lauper, Van Morrisson en de Scorpions, die met hun nummer ‘Wind of Chance’ een trouwens redelijke kans maakten op de titel ‘Soundtrack van de Berlijnse Muur’. Dat ze in het programma van een andere band spelen, zegt genoeg over hun eigen kansen naar die titel. Ook al is de vergelijking met de Berlijnse Muur indirect, “The Wall” heeft duidelijk meer inhoud dan welk nummer ook.

Dat 20 jaar na de val van de Berlijnse Muur de muur nog steeds een onuitputbare bron van inspiratie is, moge duidelijk zijn. ‘The Wall’ van Pink Floyd is meer dan een cd, zelfs meer dan een conceptalbum. ‘The Wall’ vertelt alle aspecten van het leven. Dit levensverhaal is uitgewerkt door creatief brein Roger Waters tot een film, groot live spektakel en met behulp van politiek en satirisch cartoonist Gerald Scarfe werd het concept nog eens visueel versterkt. Vooral het facistische en absurde zijn door Scarfe goed benadrukt. We kennen allemaal de ‘marching hammers’ en de ‘fucking flowers’. Beide verhalen hebben eenzelfde thematiek, namelijk onderdrukking, die uiteindelijk leidt tot vervreemding, politieke vervreemding in het geval van de Berlijnse Muur en persoonlijke vervreemding bij de hoofdpersoon Pink. Zowel op politiek als filosofisch gebied is de vergelijking gemaakt. ‘The Wall’ lijkt een voorspellende functie te hebben over wat er de mensen te wachten stond na de val van de muur. Opluchting en chaos. ‘The Wall’ laat zien hoe belangrijk liefde, vrienden, familie en andere mensen zijn in het leven van een persoon.

Juni dit jaar bezocht Roger Waters Israël en de West Bank Muur. Hij liet toen weten, dat als die muur valt, er dan op die plek een heropvoering van ‘The Wall’ plaats zal vinden en hiermee is de cirkel rond. Het fenomeen ‘muur’ is en zal een onuitputtelijke bron van inspiratie blijven voor de mens.

This is a list of good movies to watch while high on Pot that I decided to compile, after smoking a little Pot. I started it and got quite most of it done and then pawned the rest off on a couple of buddies! These are in no particular order, and this list isn’t "The Best Movies to Watch High on Pot," just some good movies to watch while enjoying the green.

• Any Monty Python Movie (but especially Monty Python and the Holy Grail)

  • ADDED LATE: At first for got to add any Monty Python, mostly due to smoking pot and getting distracted by shiny things!  Anyway, anything by Monty Python fits the bill for good watching while high…anything. I especially like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, though, as I believe it just may be the pinnacle of humour!
• The Big Lebowski
  • Just an all round cool movie with cool characters. Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey Lebowski (aka "The Dude") is amazing, and John Goodman as The Dudes friend Walter Sobchak is a performance you won’t soon forget. A mix up around two people with the same name that leads to an epic battle to get the Dude’s carpet replaced or cleaned after a thug pissed on it… Never mind that, just take a few puffs and watch the damn thing!
• Caddyshack
  • One of the best Summer comedies of all time! Trouble’s brewing at an upscale private golf course/country club when a crass, fun loving loudmouthed millionaire plans on joining the quiet and normally reserved club. Bill Murray puts in one of the funniest performances ever captured on film (in my opinion, at least), as the messed up, pot smokin’, gopher hunting groundskeeper Carl Spackler. Great performances from Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield (his best performance!) and Ted Night make this one a gem.
• Spaceballs
  • Mel Brooks takes on Star Wars. Brooks comedic genius combined with alumni of the great Canadian Second City Television (SCTV) Rick Moranis and the late John Candy makes this a winning sci-fi cheesefest.
• Evil Dead 2
  • A Sam Raimi masterpiece. I know it’s it’s Evil Dead 2, but it’s not necessary to watch the first. Evil Dead 2 is written as if the first didn’t take place, despite both staring the great Bruce Campbell and taking place in the same old scary cabin. It’s just that I find the second movie superior. Even so, I still suggest watching the original Evil Dead.
• A Scanner Darkly
  • An award winning book by Philip K. Dick, translated into an animation meets reality festival for the eyes with a story that draws you deep into itself. A twisted tale of a deep undercover vice cop trying to find the source of the drug "Substance D," a drug that he himself has become addicted to. A myriad of twisted characters and plot drive this movie. A great cast of actors including Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder and Woody Harrelson certainly doesn’t hurt either. Try to make sure you smoke your good, heavy mental stuff for this movie.
• Pink Floyd The Wall
  • An over the top, self indulgent whiny story about how shitty life would be if you were a fabulously filthy rich monster rock star made of equal parts Syd Barret and Roger Waters. Oh, and it totally freakin’ rocks. Pink Floyd’s monster Rock Opera concept album, The Wall fuels this warped, cool stylistic animations mixed with live action. A feast for the ears, eyes and mind. Puff away!!!
• Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
  • A truly funny, stupid movie about two stoned buddies trying to score some White Castle burgers. Neil Patrick Harris (as himself) steals their car, and the dubious duo end up riding on the back of a cheetah so you know this is a good movie!
• Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters 
• One of the most disjointed plot-lines I’ve ever seen with a bizarre collection of animated characters including a floating, super-powerful "fries", a milkshake with tiny hands, a suggested omniscient watermelon and his side-kick, Rush’s Niel Peart. The "Let’s All Grab a Snack" retro intro is classic.  "Don’t talk, watch! Don’t talk, watch! You came here, watch it! You don’t like it, walk out!

• Heavy metal

  • An awesome movie to watch after smoking a little something,something. It is animated, there is great music and boobs, it took forever to get on vhs , just waiting for a blu-ray copy of it.

• The Kentucky Fried Movie
  • The very first movie from John Landis (He even has a cameo). This collection of skits, satire, and parodies from 1977 stands also as one of the first efforts from the creative team of Jim Abrahams  and the Zucker Brothers of Airplane! and The Naked Gun fame. It sports a "movie within-a-movie" called "A fist Full of Yen" which is a spoof of Enter the Dragon. Classic. Any movie that starts off with a news anchor stating "The popcorn you are eating has been pissed in…film at 11" receives high accolades.  

As you probably know, a list like this could go on and on… but it won’t!

Há sim um brilhante narrador: Pink Floyd. Para a qualidade da música, as mesmas duas palavras. E mais duas: Michael Kamen. A câmera do sr. Alan Parker tem toda a liberdade. Faz o que lhe apetece. Contudo, nunca nos leva a lugares inóspitos (entenda-se: desinteressantes). Gerald Scarfe foi o responsável pela animação que encaixa perfeitamente com o resto do filme.

Who has NOT heard about The Great Wall of China? No one, I guess. Even young children are already fascinated by one of mankind’s greatest achievements. Visit the wall and you’ll never be the same!

The world’s longest human-made structure measures 6,400 km or 4,000 miles, or that’s what is believed. Due to the rough terrain it is not entirely clear how long it is, but the aforementioned number comes close.

It is often said the Great Wall of China is so big it can even be seen from the moon.

However, this is an urban legend, dating back from times mankind still had to visit the moon.
No astronaut who actually went to the moon said he had seen the wall. This is easy to understand when you know it is only 10 meters or 30 feet wide (at maximum) and has about the same color as its surroundings.

Another myth says the Great Wall of China surrounds China.

Not true: it lies in the northeast of the country. It was built between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire. The current borders of the country are much further north and further west.

The oldest parts are made of earth, stones and wood. Later also bricks, tiles and lime were used. Watchtowers were built for storing weapons.

Several sections close to Beijing were renovated and now attract millions of tourists each year. Other parts, in more remote areas, are often in a rather poor condition or have been destroyed to make space for a new construction.

Visiting the Great Wall of China is an unforgettable experience. It’s the highlight of many trips to Asia. However, be aware the wall is often very steep. Elderly people may have trouble keeping their balance and many never walk further than a few kilometers. Stairs are uneven, the surface is rough and the wall is sometimes only a few meters wide – which can be a problem if there are many people walking by.

And still, it’s something you should not miss!

The most popular place to enter this megastructure is Badaling, 80 km northwest of Beijing. There’s a new expressway connecting Badaling with the capital. Here most tour groups come. No wonder it’s very busy. The portion was constructed during the Ming Dynasty.

If you prefer a quieter section, I recommend Mutianyu, 70 km northeast of Beijing. It is also well-preserved, surrounded by forests and rivers and includes no less than 22 watchtowers. At Mutianyu the wall is 7 to 8 meters high and 4 to 5 meters wide.

No matter if you find it too touristy or not, you haven’t seen China if you haven’t been to the wall.

OD Records

Laoying Shao Road, Fenghuang, China

On the banks of the calmly flowing river Tuo, in the back water river-town of Fenghuang, sits  OD Record store.  Narrow and quaint, snugly camouflaged by tea shops and  food stores; a record store that could easily be unseen by even the most observant eye.

We enter the shop, which has more in common with a long slim corridor than your average store (the idea of browsing space, having not really caught on), and discover a wall dominated by CDs without covers.  Each CD sits in a perfectly fitted clear plastic wallet, offering neither explanation nor reason for their naked forms. I stare closely at the specimens and discover them to be neither official release, nor pirated copies, but press-release promotional CDs, the likes of which are usually sent to music journalists or radio-stations.

I stare closely at a remastered release of The Police’s Reggatta Da Blanc, and notice that each CD is dotted with  stickers offering press-friendly promotional notes in Mandarin. We stop for a minute and gaze out to the River Tuo in wonder, contemplating how a small shop in the middle of nowhere in China, could have come into such a supply of promotional CDs. We come to a swift conclusion; that the store is either an ex-writer/ radio presenter/ editor’s personal collection for sale, or else a record-label company has liquidated its stock onto the market (which, according to copyright legislation, is technically illegal).

Spurred on by the apparent rarity of the promos on hand (after-all when was the last time you saw a CHINESE promotional copy of a record!), we get flicking. A few interesting titles raise their heads; a chill out CD featuring a Radiohead remix tempts my purse strings, as does a James Brown live album from the 1980s, and Supertramp’s Greatest Hits.

I scan my eyes over the hypnotically monotonous shelving, searching for anything unusual or that I have wanted for a while. I spy Roger Water’s The Wall Live In Berlin,  haphazardly jammed at the back of one of the stands near the cash register. Recorded way back in 1990, the live album features the likes of Van Morrison, Sinead O’Conner and, erm, Cyndi Lauper, dueting with the ex-Pink Floyd singer.

Picking up on the slight interest I show, the manageress slots the The Wall into the shop’s stereo and cranks it up to 11. The opening chords of In The Flesh ring out, and a biro on top of the old speakers near the till rattles as Water’s aged voice eventually  croons, “So you thought you might like to go to the show”,  the infamous first lines of that infamous album.  I listen to the track,  reminiscent of that spine-tingling night at Live 8, and, light of its 40Y (£3.64) price tag, can’t say no.

We pay up, and wander back to the balcony of our hotel, where we listen to the album, as the sun sets over the quaint river town.

Deb and I decided to do our journey from Los Feliz to Pasadena.  Deb even made sure we were getting the right directions by taping a post-it to her bike (brilliant) It turns out we needed small maintenance to our tires and gears before our departure that morning. We visited The Bicycle Mart (1601 S. Brand Blvd. Glendale 8181-244-9989). Bill, the Owner of the shop, was more than willing to help us. We sorta picked his brain asking him a slew of bike questions and he was so completely helpful. He really was super cool and told us how to get to Pasadena from Glendale and forewarned us about, “The Wall”. Deb and I looked at each other asking…”the wall? What’s ‘the wall’?” Bill told us it was the last part of our trip before we’d reach Pasadena city limits. Determined, we covered 20 miles roundtrip and made it to Deb’s meeting, a pit stop visit with my Aunt Elvira, brunch @ La Grande Orange Cafe and window-shopping in Old Town.

All in all, we were pretty successful and great work out with our girls. (Our bikes!) The Wall will be a piece of cake next time around.
