So last night was my third time seeing Ingrid and the band. Each time has been in Pittsburgh, the last 3 years. And each time she and her crew of eccentric personalities make the hour drive to Pittsburgh more than worth it!

This show was actually at Mr. Small’s Theatre in Millvale, PA, which is just over the river from downtown Pittsburgh. I managed to get lost 3 times getting there, but I eventually found it. I walked up the steps to the queue of people and told the man waiting that I was on the guest list (somewhat profoundly, because after all, how many times does someone get to be on a guest list for a rock group!?). He radioed in my last name as I waited impatiently to get inside and get a drink. The woman radios back, and she says, “Thrasher…that’s a negative.”

I am standing there paralyzed in shock. “What do you mean? I’m definitely on the list. I was put on there by Brian Vinikoor.” I thought name-dropping would boost my chances, or at the very least cause people standing in line watching this unfold to wonder who the hell I was. But that was all shot to hell when the guy checking tickets said, “I’ve never heard that name before in my life.”

So, after a few e-mails from my phone, calling multiple people inside, outside, and in Los Angeles, they finally found the guest list that my name was on and put an admission bracelet on my wrist. So, I stood in the line of people waiting to get in, and surely enough it starts pouring down rain. Then the rain turned to ice. I was standing there getting soaking wet for a good 25-30 minutes! However, by the end of the night, I have to say: it was all worth it.

I don’t want to go on and on about Greg Laswell, but he was definitely a very nice surprise. I hadn’t had a chance to research him before the show because I have been so busy, but was very impressed with his voice and songwriting. I’ll probably end up being a fan eventually.

Ingrid and the band, as expected, performed beautifully and to the audience’s liking the entire night. Tonight’s show was the last stop of their North American tour, and their 47^th show in 2 months. Allie Moss, Ingrid’s guitarist and usual back up vocalist, had lost her voice, but still smiled, laughed, and even sang some parts. What a trooper! You would never know they were tired, or sick of what they were doing because the energy was consistent the entire show, even with Allie Moss as a mute.

One thing that I picked up on early in the performance was Ingrid’s voice. Given the last time she performed in Pittsburgh she was sick, I have to say that her tone and timbre of her voice was a lot richer and developed than I ever remember it. This was particularly noticeable in the second song of the night, “Die Alone.” I’m not a professional by any means, but as a constant Ingrid YouTuber, and follower, it was something that caught my…ears.

Her set list also had some unique features. She played a new untitled song, which has made its way to YouTube thanks to me a die-hard fan. After the song, she asked what it should be named, to which a voice behind me gave a suggestion. I guess we’ll wait and see if it makes the next album, and if she took his advice. Immediately following that song, she introduced another new song: a duet with Greg Laswell. This song is also untitled, unrecorded and unpublished. It was a very ‘happy in-love type of song’ and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say that maybe Greg and Ingrid are in to each other? A friend I was with noticed that they both had wedding rings on, so who knows? It will be interesting if we find this out for sure somewhere down the road.

After the show was finished, Ingrid did 2 encores, including a Mexican-food themed version of her current single “Maybe,” which the audience ate up absolutely loved.

Overall, the show was a huge success, and Ingrid and her band’s musicianship made for what many would call an entertaining, fun, and enjoyable evening.

I have to say thank you first to Brian Vinikoor for making the arrangements for me to see the show. I really really appreciate it, and I’m not sure there’s anyone who could appreciate these efforts more than I. Also, thank you to the merchandise manager, Lauren Glucksman, for being so helpful with the misunderstanding with the guest list, saving my ass from the rain, and for being so fun after the show!

When you stay on campus too long, Duke quickly becomes your world. You narrow your focus until all that’s left in front of you is a thin tight-rope line to walk on, with little room for error. You struggle to find balance and calm yourself by thinking “one step at a time”, lest you falter in your step and find yourself spiraling downward.

It’s easy to see the problem, it’s less easy to fix it. I know I’ve been living one obstacle at a time, barely catching my breath between each meeting, test, and paper hurled at me, but I don’t know how to stop. Like a performer discovering a fear of heights halfway down the rope, I have come to realize mid-semester that something needs to change. I’m not running my life–my life is running me. With the audience’s eyes on me, however, the show must go on. I must keep my eyes trained steadily on the rope and continue step by step.

Ok. First, let me say (& this has nothing to do with the book so if you don’t want to hear it skip to paragraph 2) that I have always liked some of Eminem’s music. Sometimes I don’t know whether to be amused, sad, or offended by it but, love him or hate him, I think he is super creative, a fantastic story teller and lyrically a genius. And most of the time, if you can get past the explicit lyrics and exaggerations, his songs actually have some meaning to them. You may have to read between the lines and know something about his life or history to interpret but it’s there. But it’s only music. It’s entertainment. And like any other form of entertainment it’s not necessarily meant to be taken seriously. I mean, I don’t watch a horror movie and think “Wow, the person who wrote this movie must be a horrible monster who actually did these things so I can’t watch their movies.” I’m not a murderer, thief or prostitute. I don’t cuss like a sailor…most of the time. I have zero interest in drugs. And for the record, listening to Eminem’s music or watching movies with horrific scenes has never made me want to do any of the above. Ok, a boring movie or song might make me want to do drugs but I resist the urge. And when someone hurts me or makes me mad I might call them names and think of committing homicide but I would never actually do it. Anyway, for some inexplicable reason I have been more into his music lately. I suppose I’ve just gotten way beyond bored with the music that is out there and I need something to wake me up. I’ve been reading a lot more too so when I ran across his book I had to read it.

I have to say that I found Eminem’s book to be pretty interesting. Probably because it wasn’t exactly what I expected…meaning it wasn’t all about music. He makes a living expressing his emotions and thoughts so I’m not sure why it surprised me so much that his book would contain so much of both but it did. I suppose it’s the ease with which he seems to convey them that catches me off guard. Who knew that he could do it in a semi-biographical, not-meant-to-be-taken literally, funny song & in a book that is serious? I mean, isn’t it the guys who are supposed to be bad with expressing thoughts & emotions? He comes across as being very real…just a regular guy. He touches on things that most people wouldn’t reveal because it’s embarrassing or shameful in some way. Again, why the shock? He does that in song lyrics all of the time. That serious book thing just really throws me off.

There are a few things that really stick out to me and surprisingly the most memorable ones are not about music. As soon as you open the book you are smacked in the face with 4 pages of pure emotion as Eminem talks about his best friend Proof who was shot in 2006. It’s very powerful and relatable. He talks about how Proof taught him to fight and helped him out with a cash making scheme battling (with words not fists) kids at Proof’s school. Of course there are plenty of stories about his music and career. You get some behind the scenes info on his lyrics and videos like when he got beat up as a kid, had blood coming from his ears and blacked out, hence the song “Brain Damage”. You get to read about how his uncle Ronnie introduced him to hip-hop when he was still listening to (get this) New Edition and Michael Jackson. Who knew? He breaks down the fine lines between Marshall Mathers, Eminem, and Slim Shady which I found very interesting. I sort of got it before but now it actually makes total sense. He talks about where the peroxide ‘do came from, what he thinks could be his biggest contribution to hip-hop, and the point where he realized that he didn’t need to get high to do shows anymore because the crowd was actually there for him. There are stories about his background that include moving around every few months, his house getting robbed constantly, choosing to be the clown over the shy kid in school, and legal problems. He talks about his kids, what they mean to him, and how he explains himself to them. He mentions his father basically to say that he has no interest in knowing him anymore. He mentions his ex-wife mostly to say that they get along now for the kids sake. He mentions his ex and his mom to say that it’s not ok for others to talk negatively about them.

What is clearly missing from this book is all of the drama from his past that involves his mother and ex-wife but I suppose he has addressed that enough in his lyrics. One other thing that is noticeably missing is his journey to get clean. These things could probably be another book in themselves. Maybe this isn’t the last book we’ll see from him?

The book comes with a dvd. It’s pretty short though so don’t get too excited about that part. It’s got some good concert footage and some of Eminem and his crew joking around. The book contains copies of lyric sheets or chicken scratch as some would call it. You can see how his lyrics started out before he perfected them. I don’t know how he deciphered all of them but I guess there’s a method to his madness. There are sketches of superheros and people that he drew…50 cent, Tupac, and himself. They’re impressive. I’m no artist but I think if the rap/producing thing doesn’t keep going he could definitely work on the comic book circuit.

Overall, it is serious and amusing at the same time. And, as always when it comes to Eminem, it is thought provoking. You can tell he feels like he is often misunderstood because sometimes when he makes a joke he puts “(just kidding)” after it. Imagine that. Eminem misunderstood? I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is an Eminem fan, a hip-hop fan, or a good rags-to-riches story fan.

Oh, one more thing…this is Eminem we’re talking about not Nathaniel Hawthorne. Expect lots of colorful language and imperfect sentence structure. If you’re a literary nut who can’t stand it when a comma is out of place this book is not for you.

I would like to thank G for salvaging my weekend with this song. Our combined families had scheduled the entire weekend for us it had seemed, thus preventing me from doing anything I wanted (or needed) to do. She talked me back to the ground. I get too wrapped up in what other people want of me and fail to take care of myself. “No” is not in my vocabulary, so G helps me to say it from time to time.

And I’ve been doing all sorts of nonsense to try make my hair grow faster, following tips found on the (unreliable) internet:

- brush my hair like crazy
- eat tons of protein, mostly chicken
- take vitamins every day
- eat veggies
- drink essence of fish (farkin gross) every day
- wash my hair max once a day (and with cold water)
- brush some more
- finishing up this weird hair mask thingy my mom bought
- chilling out and taking my time instead of studying like a mad dog, because that will lead to STRESS
- did I mention brushing my hair?

You may have recently heard that the Eminem-Mariah Carey catfight has been heating up. Well, Eminem just set the thermostat to Nuclear with his new track, “The Warning.” You gotta hear it to believe it; the details between their one physical encounter–according to Eminem, at least–is well, icky. Still, Eminem sounds completely focused, like a rapper on a mission, which is good to hear, considering that his Relapse CD just sounded been-there-done-that tired. Of course, he’s dissed Mariah before, but at least this time, he’s delivering new scoop, icky as it may be.

At this point, we’re so used to Eminem trying to shock us that it’s hard to remember the time when he actually did just that. Still, there’s no denying it. He really had the goods for quite some time a few years back, delivering chills and thrills pretty much at his will (hey, I can rhyme, too!). Of course, he sure released a lot of juvenile crap, but his very best work, which includes “Kim,” “Superman,” “Without Me,” “Stan,” and “Lose Yourself”, was simply untouchable at the time.

My personal favorite Eminem song, the one that got me to see him as more than a hemorrhoid mouth (i.e. talking out of his ass), remains “The Way I Am.” It’s the one where he basically spews venom at everyone, including–no, especially his fans for taking away his privacy and turning his life upside down. Hmm. Of course, from a logical point of view, his arguments seems to hold little water, seeing that 1) he obviously WANTED to be a star rapper (otherwise, why not go into something else, say accounting?) and 2) Eminem really wasn’t that big of a superstar when he wrote the song (his only hit before the second album was that annoying and innocuous “Slim Shady” song). But none of it matters. Eminem’s in overdrive and overhate, and his pure fury slays all counterarguments before him, just as he clearly wishes to slay pretty much everyone in his path. His logic may not be real, but his anger, as well as his own belief that it is real, undoubtedly is, and in the end, the song transformed Eminem from a juvenile potty mouth to someone who could and did jolt the world’s senses.

Emimen's latest studio release, Relapse

After a four year absence from the spotlight, Eminem has topped the Billboard 200 with his latest release, Relapse. He’s been doing the media circuit — cover stories with Entertainment Weekly and Vibe, radio interviews, an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live – to promote the album. Two of the tracks, “Crack a Bottle” and “We Made You” are already huge hits and Relapse promises to be the soundtrack of the summer.

Eminem continues to spark controversy with the homophobic, misogynistic content of his songs, but you can’t deny the fact that the guy is a brilliant lyricist. And he’s remained pals with Elton John since they performed “Stan” together at the 2001 Grammys, so that’s got to be good for something.

In addition to his rapping skills, Eminem has displayed his talents as an actor (2002’s Curtis Hanson film 8 Mile) and memoirist (2008’s The Way I Am.) Voice your choice in today’s poll over which role is his best.

Probably one of my favorite Eminem songs ever. Not exactly  a “throw back” but, it’s still worth a listen after not hearing it fro a while.

Allie Moss just released her new EP Passerby and I have to say I am very excited about it.

For those of you who don’t know Allie has been touring with Ingrid Michaelson for about the last 2 years. I saw her perform both with Ingrid Michaelson on guitar and back up vocals and as a solo act.

There were times when she was singing solo where it was absolutely transfixing. Allie has a voice that is simple yet mesmerizing in a way that makes listening to the music she sings somewhat of a riddle.

I haven’t had a chance to listen to all of the music yet, but she performed “Passerby” in 2007 when I saw her and it was haunting and beautiful. I can’t wait to buy this album, but I want to buy it as a CD not as a digital download.

She sang solo in 2007 when I went to see her, but only as back up when I saw her with Ingrid Michaelson in 2008. After the concert back in November of 2008, Brittney and I went to Tom’s Diner just up the street from the venue. We were joking about how funny it would be if Ingrid and her band came walking in. Well, what do you know but the entire band except Ingrid came in and ordered…including Allie! I later tweeted to Allie that I saw her and she wrote back. She said her gravy smothered sandwich wasn’t that good.

Anyway, Allie is on a world tour of the eastern United States with Bess Rogers, another member of Ingrid’s Be Ok Tour band.

Either way I am highly suggesting that you take a listen to her stuff on Amazon or iTunes(coming soon). You can also check out Allie’s YouTube page full of fun videos of their World Tour of the Eastern United States. Make sure you BUY THE ALBUM. Don’t pirate it. These people make a living off of the hard work and talent they put in to these albums. So no piracy! I know that sounds so pretentious but Allie deserves it more than most any artist out there right now!

Eminem’s back. Here’s the video of his single, “We Made You,” and it’s a typical Eminem parody, this time spoofing Sarah Palin, Amy Winehouse, Jessica Simpson, and numerous others. To be honest, the biggest parody he seems to be doing is the one he’s doing on himself. It all seems rehashed and recycled, and the song–like “Crack the Bottle” before it–is just… well, it’s just there. To be honest, it’s boring, which is something Eminem has rarely been accused of being.

So instead of hypothesizing about his upcoming Relapse album, let’s instead press rewind and count down the Top 5 Eminem songs of all-time.

5. Without Me: Eminem goes pop, and it works. It had the same magic that both “We Made You” and “Just Lose It” tried to recapture–both failing miserably.

4. Stan: This dark tale of a disturbed fan is as well structured as a Fitzgerald novel. It went on to create headlines when Eminem performed it at the Grammys with none other than Elton John, which many saw as Eminem’s message of acceptance after all the homophobia accusations leveled against him. I don’t know. It may have seemed nice, but it’s kind of like a guy punching you in the gut and then saying, “Oh, I’m sorry. I regret punching you.” Sure, he apologized, but does that make him better than the people who never punched you in the first place? I think not.

3. Superman: Eminem gets bitchy–bitch this, bitch that–with one woman-slaying lyric after another. I know I shouldn’t like this, but Eminem’s delivery slays my inhibitions away. He’s being a dick, but the song is awesome, nonetheless.

2. Kim: Wow. Such is the terrifying power of this song that I can’t even imagine what listening to it twice in a row would do to me. As horror-inducing as (good) pop music ever gets.

1. The Way I Am: This is the song that made me start taking Eminem seriously (I mean, “My Name Is” was just schtupid child’s play). If you really think about it, the lyrics are kind of funny, since Eminem wasn’t that big of a star when the song came out, so it comes off a bit lady-doth-protest-too-much. However, Eminem put real anger and real heart into the song, and such emotional power is what made Eminem for several years the most salient artist in music. That’s why he needs to stop fooling around with crap tracks like “We Made You” and start digging deep once again.

Eminem – The Way I Am

I’m always a generous person, to the extent that people abuse my generousity. But I don’t care for as long as I purposely know I am helping without even getting something back. Sometimes, people thank me and sometimes they vanish faster than the wind.

I was always that happy-giver to anyone, but I know there’s always a point where to end up my generousity. Maybe, i lost track of time that I only enjoyed one thing - refusing to grow. It was as if I am always that Grade School boy who would always give away what’s in his meal bag. Yeah, even now, I still take the whole world as my playground, and that made people utilized or abused me.

Few years after my 5-year stay in the University, a close friend bewared me that nowadays, friendships are based on utility. I was not solved with that idea, thinking of its eccentricity. But yeah, I was so wrong and that friend was so right.

I think, it’s time for me to grow up even just a little bit. Playful as I am, I know that I’ve reached the prime of discerning which part of me to give and which is not to. Now that I’m literally away from home and my family, I realized that I should be saving up for the rainy days. I might be cursed or forsaken, but nowadays, I’m abandoning that Good Samaritan in me that had delude me for years.

I frown as I look back at the old days of my over-generousity,  should have I not be so giving, I might probably be a millionnaire now, but sometimes, the virtue of helping is more rewarding than the intention of showing off. But, such charity has been given that I should now think of myself. Selfish as it may sound, but I care less.

At present, I’m still that generous smalltown folk that I am, it’s just that I’m now teaching people how to sow a seed instead of giving the fully-harvested beans, because, I now believe that seeing people earn honestly for their dough gives me more than the smile than seeing people happy of what I’ve given them without doing anything.
