The Whip are a band whose founding members come from Oldham, Greater Manchester, UK formed in 2006. The band’s debut album, X Marks Destination, produced by Jim Abbiss, was released on Southern Fried Records on March 24, 2008.

I needed a study break from writing my grad school application because I’m having some serious writer’s block.  So I decided to go with something upbeat but still convey my mood. This is how I arrived at “Frustration” by The Whip. This dance rock song from their  “X Marks Destination” album says it all… including what the weather is like here. Ha.

I think I’m ready to begin reading for the public, and charging for my readings, but I’m not sure.  So I decided to ask the cards.

Question: Am I ready to read for the public and charge for my readings?

I drew 3 cards for my answer.

Anchor + Cross + Clouds

Well, I guess the message is pretty clear that I’m ready yet.  Anchor represents my confidence, and Cross represents my faith, and Clouds shows that both are uncertain.  I don’t have enough confidence and faith in myself yet, so I’m not ready.

Next I asked the card if I will ever be ready to read professionally, and here’s what I got:

Ugh!  Clouds again!  That means my answer is ‘doubtful.’  Whips + Lily represents active experience, and Clouds shows that my experience is shaky.  I’ll take that to mean I need more practice reading for friends and family in order to acquire the necessary active experience before I’ll be ready to go pro.

That’s not what I was hoping to see, but it’s good advice and it makes sense.

Letter is a message in writing or some form of paperwork.
Clouds + Whip = anger.  Clouds affects the mind, and Whip represents arguments and abuses.

I can probably expect a confusing or angry email or written notice today.  Maybe a confusing notice that makes me angry.

Update Nov 9, 2009:
The Lenormand cards never fail to astound me with their accuracy!  This morning the cards were warning me about a summons I received this afternoon to notify me that a lawsuit has been filed against me regarding an old financial dispute.

The Letter is the summons of course, and the Clouds indicates the confusion surrounding the situation.  Whip is an argument or conflict, and that perfectly describes a lawsuit.  I’m curious why Tower didn’t appear in today’s draw.  If it had, I probably would have suspected some kind of legal paperwork.

MOVE, DAMN IT!

Well, you just can’t belly dance unless you move.

Some of my students don’t.  I don’t know why, but I have to figure out what the blockage is.  You aren’t a good teacher unless you can light a fire under their fannies.

And I am not afraid to use the matches.

Some are extremely shy, though they have the beautiful bodies youth still brings.  Some are just not used to moving their bodies in sensual ways….and if Belly Dance isn’t sensual, then what is?

Ah, God.  There is such growth in BD when you catch on fire.  There are no ceilings, you reach to the heavens and your feet are like roots down deep into the earth.  You are stretching for immortality.

I can’t express too strongly the regenerative powers of dance…and this dance in particular. It is born of our bodies, our natures as Women, as creative human beans….Plant us in the earth and watch us grow!

Every woman has the power to dance, regardless her body shape or her experience.  It is these damn internal messages we carry around like toxins in ourselves ABOUT our potential as dancers.

A good teacher can punch through these barriers and find those things that can unlock them.  I have to be a better teacher.

Today I put on full tribal makeup, a good tribal costume and either I will look like a left-over from Halloween or I will scare the bedevil out of them. I will scare them into motion.  I will spit wooden nickels or I will spit on them.  This last was done to me 5 years ago when I went out for my first solo performance by the older dancers and I thought: “How rude!”  I didn’t know that was for ‘luck’.

One thing I think is my problem.  I am a stickler for form…and form takes time and it varies for each dancer as she comes into herself.  I am going to let up on form and just try to make it all more fun.  That should help…but I thought we were having fun.

Another thing: I’m going to use more music in the exercises we do.  I think music must be able to unlock a lot in our minds and bodies and I haven’t been using it enough.  I’m going to rely on this and see what happens.

We do have a lot of fun each class, but I think it’s just commitment on both sides.  Me to start pushing them into different steps, and them to PRACTICE.

I know now why teachers rely so heavily on choreography.  That’ll fix ‘em.  Some Hagallah  will make them attend.

Addition:  I loosened up this afternoon, and the class went MUCH better.  I forget that these movements are damn hard in the beginnning…and they can be frustrating.

So, I dropped the whip, only attended to form on some things…and had more fun in the doing.  We danced to 9 pieces of music, not the whole songs, but enough to be able to work different zones of the body.

That went very well.  I think I really saw improvement and progress today, because people were not so self conscious about ‘getting it right’.  (but I did go back to some basic forms, and we did snake arms today…and that’s damn hard~!  Even for me.)

That will come, but it will take time and PRACTICE!!! And that must be done at home…on their own time….religiously.

There is no way around this….

Plus, I think music is ‘the’ key to getting it in the muscle memory.  I saw some progress here, and I think muscle memory is developing in these gals.

We went to Kaboobee’s after class and regained all those calories we lost in class with some wonderful baklava.  And Persian sweet tea.

The owner is Iranian, and is a poet and LOVES Rumi and is going to set up poetry readings.  He has asked to carry “The Zar Tales” and I carefully explained to him that some of it is erotica, and it’s very “anti-fundamentalist”…to the extent that the Zars (djinn) barbeque the Mullahs (the bad Mullahs….) and thereby “Spirit becomes Flesh”.   Of course, the Mullahs come back as Zars and create their own revenge…. but that is in Book II of “The Zar Tales”.

Are we having fun yet?  He seemed delighted in the synopsis of the tale so we will see.

But he gave me a ‘junk drive’???? to download some of my Persian music (belly dance) for him and the restaurant.

This later will be an excellent venue for my gals to start dancing in public.

That’s when they PRACTICE and really start to move.

And I might not have to get out the matches.

The Whip’s debut album X Marks may have just been released in the US this year, but the band has been anticipating album #2 for quite some time. I chatted with The Whip’s Bruce and Fee in April and they could barely contain themselves with anticipation. Bruce described the album as: “The first album is about getting to the theme park and this album is about being at the theme park… A couple of the rides we’re still not tall enough to ride.”

Since then the band has continued a grueling tour and recording sessions that should birth an early 2010 release for the sophomore album. Until then, check out the brand new song Secret Weapon which is currently being used in promos for the London club, Matter.

RIP PATRICK SWAYZE - centaur of attention again

They say celebrity deaths happen in THREES! I personally predict it’ll be Liz Taylor following Swayze and Floyd to Hades, but until I am proved right (or struck down by a vengeful sense of irony that screeches ’watch your filthy mouth!’ from the bellowing flames of hell) we’ve got 3 pairs of tickets for this Friday’s Remix All Nighter to give away. Woopwoop!

The party will be held at Matter, this Friday 18th September, and as well as Mixhell who we featured the other week, you’ll be watching The Whip, Pendulum and Zombie Nation.

It was a horribly rainy New York afternoon in April when I met up with The Whip’s Fee Daniel (drums) and Bruce Carter (lead) at the East Village soccer football pub Nevada Smiths. We were slated to meet up at  the hotel but was suggested we catch the Premier League’s Wolverhampton vs. Birmingham match, which unfortunately for Bruce kept losing satellite signal because of the rain.

When we spoke in April The Whip had just played 2 gigs with Late of The Pier, were about to film their first American TV appearance on Jimmy Kimmel (Watch here), wrapping their US tour,  and writing and recording their second album. We’ve been following the band’s Twitter and have compiled the following updates: The Whip have played a few gigs to test out 20 new possible songs while recording in a remote location in South England, and were commissioned to record animal noises for The Crookers. New song titles include Keep or Delete, Mean Machine, and Riot.

The Whip had to unfortunately pull out of The Electric Zoo line-up in NY to finish the second album and also so Bruce could spend time with his soon-to-be-born child.  Fee and Bruce provided a lot of insight into the new album in it’s very early footsteps and we’re so anxious for the new material. I predict an unleashed return to the dancefloor!

Oh and if you were wondering about who won the match, Birmingham won 2-0 against Wolverhampton. Bummer!

>  The words I use to describe your music are defiant, unapologetic, thrashy, and upbeat especially with songs like Trash and Blackout.
BC: In terms of the lyrics, yeah. I write lyrics in an appreciative way of the struggle. Trash has a positive message of standing up for yourself. Our sound comes from the chemistry that happens when all four of us play together, really letting off steam in a positive way through music.

>  That’s some quality therapy. I noticed that you tend to jam between songs as well.
BC: It’s actually kind of restricted to the way the laptop functions.
FD: We test songs and change them up a bit live. If there’s something we could have done better or if there’s something the audience isn’t reacting to we change it straight away for the next gig. Sometimes we cut a few bars at the end of a song if it’s gone too long, which we can tell by watching the audience. That’s sort of how we got our set polished.

>  I really like that. It seems more interactive in creating the non-stop set.
BC: Yeah we like blending one song into another. We’ve started writing songs with almost the same BPM almost deliberately.

>  Then you have songs like Frustration that flirt with the new wave sound…
BC: The new wave songs are in there because when we started writing songs as a band we were listening to a lot of Echo and the Bunnymen. That probably explains a bit of that context. A lot of the songs we’re writing on the new record are similar but with a different vibe.
FD: The new stuff is a lot more dance floor and pounding. But you have to keep in mind that you don’t know what direction it will go in when you start recording in the studio. Just wait and see basically.

>  So you’re working on new material?
BC: As soon as we wrap the tour we’re going to start in the studio. We’ve got a few songs finished and I’ve been writing more on the bus. It’s getting there slowly but surely.

>  It’s funny that this record just came out here last month (all laugh.)
BC: Hopefully there will be another one that gets released here around the same time as the new record gets released in the UK, probably around October or September.

>  So back to the new material. Is there any lyrical subject matter or genres you’d like to play around with?
BC: Just writing what’s going on with myself. The first album is about getting to the theme park and this album is about being at the theme park.
FD: Experiencing the rides…
BC: Experiencing the rides, do you know what I mean? A couple of the rides we’re still not tall enough to ride (all laugh.)
But you know, it’s just about the wrath of being on the road away from home, the exhaustive and relentlessness of it all and how we’ve been dealing since the 1^st album.
FD: That’s definitely where Bruce has taken new songs lyrically. The second album is more about as Bruce said “doing it rather than getting there.” I think that’s actually a really good analogy.
BC to FD: The theme park?
FD: Yeah (all laugh.)

>  And you heard it here first! You’re about to do your first American television appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show!
BC: We don’t know too much about him because he’s not on in the UK.
FD: American people in England who we’ve told have been like “Oooh!”

>  He’s a little fresher and edgier than the other late night show hosts.
FD: We’re all wondering who will be on the show that day.
BC: We want to meet some Hollywood show biz star. Watch it be someone really lame like a football player.
FD: Or someone English. I want to meet a proper Hollywood celeb on the show.
BC: Like Tom Cruise or something.
FD: We’ll deliberately be the quirky British people.

>  Are you nervous about being on American television?
BC: No we’re up for it man, yeah!
FD: Things will get captured forever which will be really cool but I’ll still be a little bit nervous.

>  It’ll be on YouTube forever! I first saw The Whip at McCarren last summer, I don’t know if you remember that gig…
BC: It was so hot that day!

>  I don’t even remember who you opened for, just remember the set.
FD: Since that gig, I’ve met so many people who were there and just happened to stumble upon us. It was definitely a really good gig for us to do as we gained quite a lot of fans from it.

>  This is a weird question but I’m curious as I’m not a musician. How do your families feel about your music and career choice?
FD: I think I can speak for the group in saying that our families have been really supportive –
BC: (distraught) We’re losing, you should put this in the interview. Basically it’s the most important football game in England and the satellite signal has gone out. I just found out we’re losing.
FD to BC: He asked if our families were supportive of what we’re doing.
BC: Deffo!
FD: My parents have been fans of music their whole lives and I grew up with music all around me. They were never given the opportunity to be musicians so it was important to them to introduce us to music at an early age.  They love hearing about what we’re doing and stuff, they love it.

>  We interviewed The Courteeners a few weeks ago when they were opening for Morrissey in New York. They’re both obviously from Manchester. They told me their own perspective, but I’m curious to hear your take on the Manchester scene.
BC: It’s funny because we’re not back there much at all. We travel a lot and don’t get to keep up on the latest. We like going clubbing and only really know about that culture.
FD: The thing about The Courteeners is that they’re carrying on a little bit of tradition. You can tie them to the whole Manchester heritage thing more so than us because we do dance music.
Music is a global thing now with the internet, so scenes don’t exist as much anymore. They exist on a global level rather than regional because you can go on MySpace, find a band in France that’s got a similar sound as you and book a gig with them. That’s sort of what we’ve been doing so the whole Manchester thing doesn’t really apply to us.
BC: It’s not like we come to NY and say “this is the Manchester night!”

>  That’s another question I had. When you come to New York do you have any say in what bands you play with? Late of the Pier seemed a bit more planned I take it.
BC: You just get put on the bill with right man bands, or right man DJ’s. Getting back to the Manchester thing though I asked The Ting Tings, they’re from Manchester as well, how many times they’ve been back and they told me 2 days in the last 9 months. End of statement.
FD: Our tour in America right now has been the longest we’ve been away from home. We’ve had 11 hour drives to the next gig but in England the longest drive is 4-5 hours with a show every night.
BC: When you’re traveling with a band it makes the world seem like this tiny place. The world seems manageable and smaller, it’s nuts.
I used to work in clubs and the bands would get all sweaty and I’d be like “What’s all that?” And now we’re on the other side of it pounding music…and the crowd goes nuts. You get anesthetized by the exposure, from travel, from clubs.

>  I noticed you’ve got all these wristbands.
BC: Mr. VIP!
FD: He’s challenging himself to keep everything on from the American tour. I can’t handle it, I’ve always got to take mine off.

>  It’s like a tree ring, you know how they have a ring for each year?
BC: Yeah, yeah totally! I pulled off a few because they got a bit skanky.

>  I’ve only got one more question left…
BC: Who’s gonna win The Wolves or Birmingham?

>  Exactly, wonder who you’re rooting for (all laugh.) Have you seen any good shows while here in NY?.
BC: We caught Bloody Beetroots at Webster Hall.
FD: There were so many people outside you literally had to fight to get in, we finally managed to get in after a lot of hassle. It was kind of worth it when everything came together, when you have to make an effort to get in. We played with them last year and I’ve never seen it like that, there was a guy with a megaphone and there was no form of a queue. It was madness!

>  I was there for the Presets earlier that night, but I didn’t stay for the DJ set.
BC: We seem to be following them everywhere.  We DJ’ed the other night with Kim in Miami. We’re literally going around at the same time so I have to bump into them again.

>  Well I don’t know if you want to add anything…
BC: The Wolves have got to win today it’s come to the end of the season, serious stuff!

>  You got a pool or bet going or something?
BC: No no, just a couple of beers. We’re living the dream traveling town to town, loving it. Absolutely loving it.
FD: I think he said everything.

Como e estado leyendo, Manchester siempre se destaco por su musica innovadora, y esta vez no es la exepcion por que les voy a hablar de una banda proveniente de Saldford, Manchester, obiamente en Inglaterra, empezaron a hacer musica en el año 2006, y su musica simplemente me parece impresionante, mas aun cuando la escuche con auriculares, tranquilo y bien fuerte, su musica es pop, inspirado en los 80s pero con muchisimos sintetizadores y cosas electronicas que segun dicen los hacen ser como los erederos de New Order, aunque a mi me parece bastante distinto, canciones como la que habre el disco que se llama “Trash” me parecen casi obras maestras, hasta el momento solo tienen un solo disco que se llama “X Marks Destination”(sin contar cosas de remixs y esas cosas que no me importan mucho), fue lanzado en marzo de 2008, ya como les e dicho se los suele describir como Dance Punk, o electro rock, a mi me parece que le queda mejor electro rock, disfruten de este discazo impresionante!!!

Granted HappyParts has a timeless rock and roll jones – if pop radio captured today’s wireless, social media overload, “Trash” would make the board lite-up.  As Sir Lord Axelson calls them, “Electro Power Bangers” – Are you down with EPBs? Memo to Top 40 Programmers: For every 10 Nicklecrack (Boulos!?) spins – give two to The Whip.  Be kind, and share GYM bangers a new source of  Precor boogie.

The latest single from The Whip, their third this year, follows much the same blueprint as previous releases, “Muzzle No.1″ and “Divebomb”, opening with a pulsating synth beat, electronic beeps and spaced-out vocals. But that’s in no way a criticism. Quite the contrary in fact, because “Sister Siam” is actually better that its excellent predecessors. Like the hyperactive lovechild of Gary Numan and Ian Curtis dressed up like Daft Punk, the track pounds and struts, beeping and buzzing with hypnotic satisfaction. Simply put, it confirms The Whip as one of the dance acts of the year. Resistance is futile.
