This may be a fun time.. mtvU has put together a small tour featuring All Time Low, The White Tie Affair and Teen Island for the end of August, hitting up five Six Flags amusement parks, mainly on the East Coast. The shows are free with your park admission ticket so why not make a day out of it, invite a bunch of your friends along and have some fun! I think Stef and I are going to hit up the MA and maybe the NJ shows. I get the feeling this could lead to some very amussing photos to share with you guys too.

The Warped Tour is celebrating its 15th birthday this summer, and yesterday I was lucky enough to see the tour for the first time in my life during its stop in Hartford. The Comcast Theatre (or the Dodge or the Meadows, depending on how old you are) was completely transformed into this crazy  rock and roll summer camp of sorts. The great thing about the Warped Tour is that its variety of acts attracts all kinds of people; yesterday’s crowd ranged from preteens decked out in their Hot Topic finery to see 3OH!3, to people in their late 20s/early 30s who braved the insanity to see solid sets from big d and the kids table and Streetlight Manifesto.

I could have spent all day simply people-watching. I mean, where else can you see a guy in Buddy Holly glasses holding a bong in one hand and a BlackBerry in the other? I saw many teens with as much decorative metal on their faces as orthodontic metal in their mouths. I wanted to ask the skinny redhead next to me during the Maine’s set if either of her two lip rings ever got caught in her braces. Kids of all ages ran around the dusty parking lot, their bodies covered in band merch and free stickers while their parents sipped $9 Bud Lights inside the amphitheater, waiting for the nine-hour day to end. Tattoos were just as prevalent as body piercings; between the artists, crew members and fans, there was easily over $10,000 worth of ink on display. Some notable tattoos included Snoopy looking up at a tree on a woman’s calf and a flaming puzzle piece on a woman’s neck.

Having never been to an all-day festival concert like this before, I was on sensory overload. There was so much to see and so much new music to hear that it was easy to get overwhelmed. It was difficult to pick which of the seven sets going on almost simultaneously you wanted to see, but what I did get to see yesterday was great. We started off the day with the end of Senses Fail’s set, then caught most of 3OH!3. I’ve already aired my grievances with 3OH!3 and their strange brand of electro-rap-rock, but you can’t deny that they have a huge following:

I took this picture at the back of the crowd, easily one of the largest I saw that day. I sat out during Brokencyde’s set,  because I literally could not stomach their music, which is labeled “screamo-crunk.” Aside from being audibly abrasive, the lyrics were more crude than some of the rap music I listen to. The crowd of mostly teenage girls didn’t seem to mind, singing along to lyrics that included “Will you be my booty call?” and other things that I’m too embarrassed to reprint. Fueled By Ramen’s A Rocket to the Moon played an enjoyable set inside away from the hot sun, and Meg and Dia gave what may have been the tamest set of the entire day, with Dia asking the crowd at one point if they liked to read because it was “great reading weather.”

The one band whose appeal I didn’t get was Breathe Carolina, an electro-screamo band made up of the strangest assemblage of people. The lead singer looked like a Daisy of Love reject, complete with a shirt that said “You can’t spell stud without STD.” Classy. The screamer/vocalist was a nerdy guy in a baseball tee, and the keytarist was a small guy with hipster hair and facial piercings. A chubby DJ/keyboardist in mesh shorts and a nondescript drummer rounded out the group. I found their music generally irritating, but their cover of Miley Cyrus’ “See You Again” was entertaining, if not laughable.

After that atrocity, I finally got to see the Maine, one of two bands I was looking forward to seeing that day. (We missed the White Tie Affair’s set since they went on 15 minutes after the doors opened.) It would be easy to dismiss them as just another pop-punk band, but their music is so undeniably catchy. I’ve been a fan of their music for a long time, but this was the first time I’d seen them live, due to an unfortunate concert experience last summer where I missed their opening set. Despite being almost suffocated by the people around me, I really enjoyed their set.

Up next was Saosin, a band I don’t have strong feelings about either way. My sister likes them, and she warned me that crowd surfing might get kind of intense during their set, having seen them before. I’ve never liked crowd surfing or really understood its appeal, but I figured if it got too intense, I could just leave and wait by the fence. It did get kind of crazy, but we were standing near the side of the stage and most of the surfing was going on near the middle. I could see most of the goings-on in my peripheral vision, and every once in a while I turned around to make sure no one was coming up behind me. However, there was one guy who came up right behind me and I did not see him coming at all. The next thing I knew, his foot hit the back of my neck really hard and I pitched forward. My vision immediately blurred and I just bolted out of the crowd. I ran to the safety of the fencing and realized that not only could I not see straight, but I was now dizzy and shaking uncontrollably. A concerned girl who I pushed by to get out and an equally concerned mother came up to me and while one checked to make sure I was okay, the other went to get the EMTs.

Long story short, I spent some QT with the EMTs while I waited for my vision to return to normal and to make sure my situation didn’t get worse. I ended up with whiplash of sorts and a pretty brutal headache, not to mention I got to walk around for the rest of the night holding an ice pack to my neck. (Aside from a stiff neck, I was fine this morning.) We spent the rest of the evening in the safety of the amphitheater, watching the end of  big d and the kids table’s set. We stayed for a few minutes of “Queen of the Internet” Jeffree Star’s set, which left most people openmouthed as he took the stage in a jeweled dress with his neon orange hair in a ponytail to a very crass version of the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow.” Star is clearly only there for shock value, which explains why he is relegated to the closing set on the Smartpunk Stage.

So we left after that, covered in dust, our backpacks full of free stuff (and stuff that was not-so-free), and I with an ice pack on my neck. Aside from my minor injury, I had a good time, and if the Warped Tour comes through Hartford again next summer, I’d consider going.

I was browsing around ESPN.com just now and started reading a headline about former Oakland Raiders Center Barret Robbins, who went AWOL just before the Super Bowl a few years ago and then fell down a messy slope involving drugs, positive steroids tests and jail time. The story revealed that Robbins blamed himself for the Raiders’ Super Bowl loss, and his overall demeanor now that he has been released from prison and is now in a halfway house. Normally a story like this would have absolutely no bearing on the day-to-day life of VLM, until I saw this passage:

Former Oakland Raiders center Barret Robbins is in a halfway house following court-mandated drug rehabilitation and said in an interview with Fox 26 in Houston he’s finally “sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

Now, maybe I’m reading to much into this and taking an ordinary phrase the wrong way, but does anyone else read that and get “Candle (Sick and Tired)” by The White Tie Affair stuck in their brain? I don’t mean to bash a guy while he’s down, since a) dude’s been through a lot, and b) “Candle” is a pretty good song, but couldn’t he have come up with another way of putting how he was feeling? Did we really have to insert song lyrics into every day life? Just a random thought for the next few minutes.

Check out the incredible turnout for 98 PXY’s “Summer Jam” ticket drop at our store in Greece! Over two hundred people donated hundreds of pounds of clothing at this event. The Medic Droid was at the absolute forefront of the Myspace musical movement that I dubbed ‘Scenecore’ in late ‘07-early ‘08.  Unfortunately, after absolutely increda-sploding on Myspace and aligning an incredible touring schedule over the course of two years which included playing with A Cursive Memory, Breathe Carolina, The White Tie Affair, Innerpartysystem, From First to Last, We Are the Ocean, Hyper Crush, and Chronic Future, the band dissolved, citing the strain of constant touring.  The band’s form of next-gen techno/electro trance rock was the perfect accomplice to Breathe Carolina’s screamo-influenced dancecore mix, which, when their powers combined, produced the all-time best club mix in the history of CLUB MIXERY!!!  It’s too bad, had they continued we may have been on the verge of an all-out Scene Kid revolution of the mainstream.  And, really, who doesn’t love egregious amounts of eyeliner and neon hair dye?

The weekend brings salvation.

Somewhere in the midst of being sick and being swamped by the Corporate Events Management project (it’s turning out to be the total pain I predicted it would be), I received encouragement and was told that I really should go for Latte Girl.

I appreciate the pick up, but at this point in time, it’s just so unthinkable. She’s way outta my league and I’m not sure I’m ready to try or even be given the oppotunity by the fates to try.

For now, she’ll remain a distant dream while I deal with my reality of promotional tools, costing in managerial accounting and other associated nightmares.

I went home for a bit after school and very nearly didn’t come back for drama. I badly needed to get some shut eye because of a bloody headache (thanks to the fact that I’m still recovering from being sick). It was only for a measly hour. It really almost put me off going to drama today even though I really wanted  to go cos I thought it might be really fun.

So I did and with it was fun with Cheng a new drama teacher. We did a little script reading, focusing on tone and a lil movement at the end. I was a little nervous but it turned out to be pretty cool.

It sounds a bit greedy but I was wishing that I could alternate between Paul and Cheng as my trainers. They’re both really fun in their own way and I wanna get the best of both worlds, just like Hannah Montana. But I can’t which is indeed, ‘le bummer’…

I hope the freshies feel engaged and want to stay, it seems like we’re doing a lot more for them to keep them interested and I really hope they keep coming back. I know, I’ve said this before.

On another note, term tests are just around the freakin’ corner! 1st, 2nd and 3rd June to be exact.

To be completely honest, they really snuck up on me this time. After that, it’s the 2 week term break awaits and that’s really soon to me!

I don’t wanna jinx it but I think I’m not too lost in Managerial Accounting so far. I probably am a little slow but I do manage to catch up easily. Hopefully this means that I won’t fare too badly in the abovementioned term tests.

Today, I thought I’d end with a video of a song that I’m really hooked onto. I’ve actually had it since last year but ever since my laptop lost all the data, including the songs, I’ve had not much to enjoy and I’m slowly building up my playlist again.

Upon meeting Heidi’s dad on last night’s episode of The Hills, I expected a little more from MTV. For instance, I expected a scene out of some sort of Western movie where Mr. Montag walks through swinging saloon doors, gives Spencer a look and then does some fancy moves with the gun in his holster as a tumbleweed blows by.

Instead I got some BS brunch at a Hollywood eatery where Spencer tripped over his words as he attempted to impress the Cowboy. Words that Heidi’s dad most definitely did not understand. So, Cowboy Montag, if you are reading this right now, I’d like to take this opportunity to translate that mumbo jumbo that came out of Pretty Boy Pratt’s mouth so maybe you can stop this wedding before it happens. Oh wait…. Well, at least you’ll know what he was talking about.

What Spencer Said: “So I say to this guy, ‘you’d really do this?’ and he gets in my face and he’s like, ‘yeah, you know, what are you gonna do?’ and that’s when I, you know, massaged his face a little bit… lightly.”

What That Means: “I punched someone for telling Heidi I was doing something wrong. And I’m an a$$hole. Please don’t shoot me.”

But the Cowboy doesn’t shoot him (aw shucks!); instead, he gives him permission to marry Heidi. Could it be that he actually likes Spencer (yeah right), or is it more likely that he wants Heidi to stop tarnishing the pure “Montag” name and start ruining someone else’s legacy?

Spencer doesn’t want anyone to change their minds so he off and runs to get Heidi a ring. A giant ring.
A ring that weighs more than the girl (even with that giant weave and those duck lips). A ring that he could obviously afford with that great job of his. Oh, he doesn’t have a job? So Heidi’s engaged/married to MTV? Sounds about right.

Not that I saw the engagement coming. I mean, I had no idea those two even got married! I wish they covered this couple a bit more. It’s just hard when they hate the media so much.  When Spencer took Heidi to the top of the ferris wheel I was kinda hoping for a double dive into the cement below.
Especially after Heidi called him SPENCEY.

Too bad all I got was a marriage proposal.

Oh yeah, other things happened this episode, too. Lauren fired Steph from her job, and while she looked like she was upset (or trying really hard to seem that way), Steph was far more concerned with the guy from the White Tie Affair to really focus on anything job-related. And good job MTV for the smooth band placement in the episode. Is this the next hot band we’re supposed to fall in love with?

Perhaps they’ll be playing at the Speidi wedding. How romantic.

Wow it’s almost been a month since I’ve lasted posted anything. It was my biggest break since Winter Recess when my demon cat chewed my Macbook power cord to death (for the second time!) and I wasn’t able to use my computer. And once I’ve gone mac I haven’t wanted to go back (meaning I wasn’t going to use the family PC to blog). Though I’ve been fairly busy with the usual school/ work thing, some of it was just pure laziness.

Since I’ve last posted I have been doing some pretty fun things here and there. I went to the Lady GaGa concert in Royal Oak, MI, which was a wicked fun time. She really knows how to throw a great concert! From bubble suits and pianos to disco sticks and leotards, that event was off the hook! Downside: 3 opening acts! It felt like forever before we  got to see GaGa and two of the three were ungodly terrible and played for way to long (Cinema Bizarre and Chester French). The third and final opener, The White Tie Affair, was really amazing tho (almost on par with the GaGa, in my opinion) and they played a great amount of music for an opening act (bonus). One other complication I had was my height issue. Being 5′6.5″ and standing on the lowest possible floor in the joint I was on my tippy toes with my head cranked looking over a sea of shoulders to catch a glimpse of GaGa’s head. Never the less I danced the night away as she brilliantly sang “Boys Boys Boys”, “Poker Face”, “Eh, Eh”, etc.. The night ended well with a chance to meet Lady Gaga (no pictures allowed :/) and chat with the lead singer of The White Tie Affair. What luck!

In other news… I’ve added/discovered loads of new music in my time off. My iTunes library welcomed 128 more songs for my listening pleasure. A few free songs of the week here and there, some music from the show Gossip Girl, Kris Allen’s songs from American Idol, Kelly Clarkson’s new CD All I Ever Wanted, Rachel Stevens‘ complete works, and artists like Tesla Boy, and Agnes. Most of which I blog about later because it’s been a good month for music for me.

On an ending note… my short lived Song of the Day feature has been officially cancelled. I know I know boo-hoo (whatever I know your not sad :p). And like Facebook, the blog’s layout/theme has undergone some changes. Also like Facebook many of you may not like it, but I do and thats all that matters. May I just say… It’s good to be back.
