The Whitest Boy Alive is a musical group based in Berlin. The band comprises singer/guitarist Erlend Øye, who is also a member of the band Kings of Convenience, bassist Marcin Öz, drummer Sebastian Maschat, and Daniel Nentwig on Rhodes piano and Crumar. Erlend Øye is from Norway, while the rest of the band is German.

Sabe o The Whitest Boy Alive? Se sim, parabéns. Se não, bem, eles são uma banda de pop minimalista (como eles mesmos se definem), baseada em Berlim. Talvez você conheça Erlend Øye (de azul) do Kings of Convenience, mas TWBA também conta com Marcin Öz, Sebastian Maschat e Daniel Nentwig. Seu último disco, Rules, saiu esse ano e só fez aumentar os fãs do quarteto.

Pois bem, os rapazes confirmaram através de seu site oficial que tocarão no Rio de Janeiro (no Jóquei Clube) no dia 11 de dezembro e em São Paulo (no Parque do Povo) no dia seguinte. No Rio eles participarão do Vale Open Air, um festival de música, cinema e festas que acontece no Jóquei Clube da Gávea entre os dias 25/11 e 13/12. Ou seja, os sortudos que comparecerem ainda poderão assistir Nova York, Eu Te Amo e Tudo Pode Dar Certo, do Woody Allen. Nada mal, certo?

I stop looking for a job. I stop considering a future here. Portland is beautiful in its rainy days and soaked streets. I could belong here, maybe, if I let myself. The truth is my wanderlust is piping up for the last time this year. I am in backwards migration. It’s time to head North. I imagine my city buried in leaves and in need of excavation. The people I care about cozy in their respective homes. I long to knock on a door or two, surprise them. I miss my leather boots and my red pea coat. I miss waking up early and making strong coffee for my parents. I miss curling into a chair with a good book and a cat on my lap—so content to be my leg warmer.

The apples run out quickly. Not surprising when each bite reminds me of home. My phone vibrates incessantly. A nagging thought in the back of my mind. A pebble in my shoe. I make plans and then blow them off. I bide my time. I talk with a boy deep into the night until I grow restless and detached. Maybe it’s the exhaustion. Could be self-preservation. I get cagey and my legs itch to run. My arms spread imaginary wings. I look longingly into the sky.

I dread that airport, still marred in disappointment. He has new pictures up. The cowboy hat intact, poised against another desert. He told me once he would follow me. Into the mountains or to the sea. Anonymous in the crowd of a city or working a farm. Whatever I want. But, this is where he belongs. Sand as far as the eye can see. Dry storms and dust. A solitary figure in a frame. Eyes shaded against the sun.

I am as restless as the wind, never knowing what I want. I grow cold and can be shut out but not contained. Often, I am friendly—dancing scraps of paper into gutters and bringing beauty where there was none. Sometimes, I am cruel—burning against cheeks and stinging tears into eyes. I crawl up the spine of unsuspecting victims and make them huddle for warmth. You can lick a finger, offer it to the air, and I may let you know me for a while. You can name me but will never own me. You can bless me or curse me. The love is just as unpredictable, always the same. I want to belong, I do. To someone or somewhere. But, I was named for a whirlwind and my nature is determined. I am always changing direction and when I go I always end up leaving someone behind.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Intentions

The New Wine is a band from Bergen Norway.  I’ve watched a few live videos of them on You Tube and they look like a super fun band. They are from the same town as The Whitest Boy Alive and it shows. They have a very similar 80’s synth disco sound.  In fact, the video I posted has The Whitest Boy Alive with The New Wine on stage doing an encore performance.  I dare you to watch that video and not be jealous you weren’t there.

The New Wine has a new single coming out soon.  Anywhere I’ve looked, I can’t seem to find any info on it though.  Hopefully it’ll be out on iTunes soon.

Declaration of  Dependence (sic), par Eirik Glambek Bøe et Erlend Øye alias the Kings od Convenience bien sûr, c’est le titre de l’album. à noter, l’absence de jeune femme sur la pochette pour la première fois, et le côté surfeur, guitare torse nu, assez étonnant…

pas de batterie ni de percussion, le “side-project” de Erlend Øye, the Whitest Boy Alive expliquant peut-être cela… (d’aileurs, j’attend toujours leur premier album que j’ai commandé il y a des mois… bref.)

d’où un album très homogène (pas de “I’d Rather Dance With You Than Talk With You” ici) si je puis dire.

un pur bonheur en tout cas.

j’aime particulièrement cette chanson et son petit côté Django Reinhardt/ Stéphane Grappelli.

et vive les CD, avec ici une explication très intéressante de la réalisation des chansons et du rôle de chacun. et vive la Poste, quel beau service public!

The XX are a cross of Stars, Pinback, and a dash of The Whitest Boy Alive. I’ve read a bunch of stuff saying they have the album of the year. I’m not ready to give them that honor. They sound a helluva lot better on the earbuds than anywhere else. My favorite song, VCR, is below.

I’m not much of a gamer, and occasional fixation with my N64 aside, I tend to steer away from video games. But if there has been one video game constant in my life, it would be FIFA Soccer.

I’ve owned each and every release from the franchise, since the introduction of its World Cup ‘98. If there is a such thing as an electronic pastime, this would be it for me. I owe it to FIFA for the countless nights I’ve spent up winning silverware and managing my beloved Arsenal.

Eleven years on, I’m still hooked. That’s why I’m anxiously awaiting the October release of the latest installment of the series, FIFA ‘10. I don’t even know why I’ll buy it, simply that it’s been engrained in me to have the newest release.

My purchase will most likely be vindicated by the game’s soundtrack. For as long as I can remember, a prerequisite for any FIFA game was a good soundtrack. From Blur on the ‘98 game to last year’s inclusion of The Bloody Beetroots, Cut Copy and Chromeo, the series has always made music a priority.

This year’s soundtrack is a great one featuring the latest from indie, electronic an world music. Here are a few selected songs that Charlie and I handpicked for your enjoyment.

Kings of Convenience will be releasing their third studio album on the second of October. Honestly I’m really having a hard time waiting for the album, since I’ve been in love with this Norwegian band from day one.
Some of you might only know Erlend Oye from the whitest boy alive or his work as a DJ, but KOC is definitely his best band.
If you’re not familiar with KOC, I suggest you get your hands on ‘quiet is the new loud’ (2001)  or ‘riot on an empty street’ (2004) a.s.a.p! They also released a remix album called ‘versus’ (with remixes done by four tet, ladytron, david withaker and so on), but that wouldn’t be a great point to start from if you haven’t heard their regular work before.

These two fellas already released two singles off their new album in some countries. Luckily youtube is accessible from every country in the world! Enjoy!

Czterodniowy festiwal to długi festiwal. Trzy dni są w sam raz. Pod warunkiem, że nogi nie odmawiają posłuszeństwa. Zwinęliśmy namiot i udaliśmy się na koncerty, bo w planach był wcześniejszy wyjazd. Dead Confederate okazało się warte tej dyscypliny. 11.20 to wczesna pora jak na start, ale tym razem się opłaciło. Znów zespół grający trochę muzykę z amerykańskiego Południa, a trochę w stylu Seattle. Pochodzący z Athens w Georgii – tak jak R.E.M. Młodzi i energiczni. Zamówiona  po festiwalu płyta już w drodze. Telepathe miałem okazję poznać z pojedynczych nagrań (niezłe), potem z płyty (gorzej), a na koncercie w Chateau było widać, że dziewczyny nie przepracowywały się i większa część ich setu to niestety mizernie zakamuflowany playback. Potem – w zasadzie przypadkiem – trafiliśmy na występ Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zeros. Moja żona stwierdziła, że to najwyraźniej jakaś sekta. Dodałbym do tego, że z lekką domieszką szant i tańca hula. W każdym razie bardzo dziwne, co w pewnych sytuacjach jest zaletą – ale my nie byliśmy w stanie dostrzec w nich tego, co najnowszy numer “Rolling Stone’a” opisujący ich jako nadzieję.

Odpuściliśmy sobie Micachu, mając w pamięci jej sceniczne zmagania na Offie, za to Jack Peñate – polecany mi również na tym blogu (vlad.pavlovy – dzięki!) – okazał się żwawy i wciągający, choć troszeczkę monotonny stylistycznie. No ale przynajmniej nauczyłem się wymawiać jego nazwisko – bardziej z hiszpańska niż z angielska. Jeszcze lepsze wrażenie zrobił na mnie Hudson Mohawke. W Chateau nagle zmieniła się atmosfera, bo z namiotu specjalizującego się w alt-country i folku stali się przyczółkiem elektroniki do słuchania. Szykuje się w każdym razie kapitalna płyta HM.

Tu doszło do jednego z cięższych wyborów Pukkelpopu. Deerhunter albo Gang Gang Dance. Wybrałem Deerhuntera, czyli to, co na płycie lubię bardziej. Nie wiem, czy dobrze zrobiłem. Brandford Cox – który sam sobie stroił gitarę i ustawiał dźwięk przed koncertem, więc chyba jeszcze nie nabawił się syndromu gwiazdy – był dość niemrawy. Choć, z drugiej strony, ludzi jego postury oceniam z góry jako niemrawych, często bez uzasadnienia. Energią nadrabiał jego zespół. Podobno na Gang Gang energii i żywiołowości jest mnóstwo – ktoś opowie parę słów?

Z przykrością odsiałem tego dnia prawie wykonawców ze sceny elektronicznej – w tym dubstepowców. Nie było klimatu, żeby oglądać ich o 16.00, a potem było już za późno. Wybraliśmy Rolo Tomassi – gitarzysta najwyraźniej już wyzdrowiał od czasu Off Festivalu, ale moim zdaniem nie straciliśmy wiele w Mysłowicach. Hanne Hukkelberg nieco poniżej oczekiwań, choć muszę przyznać, że nie za bardzo się do tego koncertu przygotowałem. Zupełnie inaczej w wypadku Dinosaur jr. Od rana majaczyli w tłumie kolesie w t-shirtach ze znajomą tandetną czcionką z logotypu tej zacnej grupy. Wyszli na dużą scenę i zagrali pod słońce 45 minut konkretnego, fajnego koncertu, rozpoczętego “Just Like Heaven” z końcówką, w której uwierzyłem, że naprawdę wszystko im siadło. Było z grubsza tak, jak się spodziewałem, zestaw największych “hitów”, zagrali nawet “Feel The Pain” w bardzo dziarskiej wersji. Duża scena – w dodatku w pełnym słońcu – to z reguły kiepskie miejsce na koncert, ale ten zostawił po sobie pewnie kilkuset nowych fanów zespołu. Może nawet wśród tych, którzy przyszli tego dnia tylko na 50 Centa i N.E.R.D., a sądząc po obłędnych tłumach, było ich sporo. Wyszedłem z poczuciem niedosytu na ostatni nasz koncert tego dnia – The Whitest Boy Alive. Miło skończyć takim akcentem swoją wizytę na festiwalu. Erlend Oye miał tak zadziwiające przyjęcie jak Bon Iver – może nawet bardziej, bo przecież jego zespół nie stał się ulubieńcem krytyki w takim stopniu co grupa Vernona. The Whitest…, pobudzeni reakcją, zagrali kapitalnie, przechodząc z utworu w utwór, żonglując swoimi kawałkami jak didżej płytami, a przy tym ani na moment nie gubiąc tego swojego specyficznego funkowego groove’u, a Oye wyglądał, jak gdyby brał jakieś środki wspomagające, choć nie podejrzewam, żeby jego uśmiech był efektem działania innej chemii niż ta między publiką a wykonawcą na scenie. Publika zresztą coś wiedziała – zespół grał tu dwa lata wcześniej, więc byli przygotowani na niezłe widowisko.

My wyjeżdżaliśmy zmęczeni i usatysfakcjonowani, więc nie pytajcie, co straciliśmy. I tak udało nam się pobyć w Hasselt dłużej niż rok temu. Pozdrowienia dla wszystkich, którzy tam byli. Ta relacja jest wprawdzie przydługa, ale jak widzicie i tak tylko po łebkach przejechałem się po poszczególnych wykonawcach. To duża impreza i wymaga dużo energii. Brakuje jej nieco bardziej awangardowych akcentów. Jak dla mnie zbiera się tu już zbyt wielki tłum, a część wykonawców kompletnie wychodzi poza mój krąg zainteresowań. Z drugiej strony, gdyby nie oni, to ciągle musielibyśmy dokonywać takich wyborów jak ten między Gang Gang Dance i Deerhunterem albo między Andrew Birdem a Grizzly Bear.

Teraz pora na PRAWDZIWE wakacje, więc przez chwilę mogę się nie odzywać. Wszystko jednak wskazuje na to, że kiedy wrócę, z koncertów przerzucę się z powrotem na płyty.

George Harrison – My Sweet Lord

Deze heb ik jullie te goed. Ik post de laatste tijd zo weinig hier dat ik hier een extra lange post van wil maken: Wat vond ik het beste, het slechtste en het verrassendste van afgelopen Pukkelpop 2009. Laat me beginnen bij het begin, dag 1:

Het Belgische electro-duo Sound of Stereo. Zeker niet slecht maar als ze gewoon DJ’en vind ik electro en danceacts toch iets te plat. Sorry!

Het hoogtepunt van de dag was zonder twijfel Passion Pit. Als je dacht dat castraten uitgestorven waren, think again. Deze Amerikaanse jongens hebben met hun zeer hoge vocals en dansbare elektronische ritmes zeker toekomst. Spijtig genoeg zijn ze niet de enigen die deze richting momenteel uit gaan. Maar wel ongeveer één van de betere acts. Vooral bij hun Studio Brussel-hitje The Reeling was het even feest in de Club.

Tomàn daarentegen was niet al te denderend. Deze Gentenaren hebben volgens mij meer te bieden op plaat dan op het podium. Het kan ook aan de inmense hitte in de Wablief? gelegen hebben natuurlijk.

The Offspring op het hoofdpodium dan maar. Daar was het publiek duidelijk wel mee. Ook ik ontdekte dat ik meer nummers van hun ken dan ervoor gedacht. Goedzo!

Dag 2 was dan weer de mooiste dag op gebied van muziek. Namen zoals Das Pop, Metric, Air Traffic, The Ting Tings en Snow Patrol doen bij elke indiekid het water in de mond lopen.

Voor onze Belgische vrienden van Das Pop was het moeilijk om de wei wakker te schudden. Bij hun toekomstige hit ‘Never Get Enough’ lukte het dan toch om even de zandmannetjes te verdrijven. Spijtig van het publiek, want de show en het optreden zelf vond ik super! De kleine fan in mij werd een iets groter bewonderaar!

Al een geluk zocht ik tijdens Delphic even de shaduw van de Marquee op later op de dag. Daar hoorde ik toevallig hun eerste single ‘Counterpoint’ die mij deed hunkeren naar meer. Het leek wel twangy gitaar/trance/poprock. Maar ga zeker zelf luisteren (en download de gratis 3 track EP) op http://www.delphic.cc/ . Spijtig genoeg is het op deze gasten hun plaat nog even wachten.

Metric was weer een leuk optreden. Meer of minder niet. ‘Help I’m Alive’ toverde even een lach op m’n gezicht en ‘Gimme Sympathy’ blijkt live iets beter te klinken dan op plaat. Die mooie benen mochten wel nog iets langer paraderen.

Want de snor van de excentrieke Eagles of Death Metal frontman was ik ook al moe gezien na Werchter. Toch nog leuk om te zien hoe enthousiast het publiek en hij zelf van zijn optredens worden.

Air Traffic moest ik maar gedeeltelijk kijken (een 4e keer hetzelfde) want in de Marquee stond Glasvegas.

Spijt had ik totaal niet. Ik durf hun optreden zelfs het beste van mijn Pukkelpop noemen. Meerdere malen kippenvel en meekweel momenten. Meer moet ik niet hebben! De frontman hield duidelijk ook van het Belgische bier.

De volgende morgen werd ik wakker geschud met Diablo Blvd. in The Shelter. Niet dat ik nog veel wakker zal liggen van dat optreden. Alleen het feit dat Alex Agnew wel borsten heeft gezien en ik niet ligt me wat dwars.

Tijd voor Team William! Moe dat ik was nam ik een zitplaats en ik had er na afloop al direct spijt van. Arne hield zich wat meer in dan op Gladiolen maar het publiek vond het een feest. De telecaster van Floris werd ook bespeeld door een enthousiasteling in het publiek die blijkbaar nerveus was. En moest die regenboog echt kapot?

The Whitest Boy Alive was dan weer een hippie dansfeestje. Niet de electrodance die we gewoon zijn tegenwoordig. Echt: back to basic dansbare ritmes en meezingbare melodieën op gitaar.  De droge frontman zag ik daarna nog in het publiek bij 50 cent. Hij was blijkbaar meer fan van de rapper dan ik.

Nee, ik bleef nog even in de Marquee voor Klaxons. Die speelden daar nieuwe nummers en bekende nummers. Het enthousiasme was geweldig, alleen de technische problemen van de gitarist waren een beetje spijtig (hoort die technieker dan niet dat ie veel te stil staat?).

Met of zonder technische problemen was Pukkelpop al bij al een leuk festival dit jaar. De sfeer is er geweldig en er zijn massa’s goeie en nieuwe bands om te bekijken. Volgend jaar zien ze mij er zeker terug!
