Cảnh sát Israel kiểm soát các cửa ra vào khu vực bức tường than khóc rất nghiêm ngặt. Khoảng trống phía trước bức tường được chia làm ba phần. Một phần cho phép toàn bộ công chúng chiêm ngưỡng bức tường từ xa. Hai phần còn lại dành cho các tín đồ đến gần tường, trong đó phần phía bắc dành cho tín đồ nam giới và phần nhỏ hơn ở phía nam dành cho nữ giới.

Theo nhiều tài liệu, bức tường than khóc có niên đại từ thế kỷ thứ nhất trước Công nguyên và ngày nay bức tường này là một biểu tượng quốc gia của Israel.

Vạn lý trường thành 

Hiếm có du khách nào đặt chân đến Bắc Kinh (Trung Quốc) lại bỏ qua Vạn lý trường thành, bức tường thành nổi tiếng của Trung Quốc dài hơn 6.350km và là một trong những kỳ quan thế giới mới lẫn cũ.

Trường thành được xây dựng bằng đất và đá từ thế kỷ 5 trước Công nguyên cho tới thế kỷ 16 sau Công nguyên, với mục đích ngăn chặn các cuộc tấn công của người Mông Cổ, người Turk và những bộ tộc du mục khác đến từ những vùng hiện thuộc Mông Cổ và Mãn Châu.

Năm 1987, Vạn lý trường thành được UNESCO đưa vào danh sách di sản thế giới.

Vào năm 122 sau Công nguyên, hoàng đế La Mã Hadrian đã cho xây dựng một công sự phòng thủ bằng đá và than bùn mang tên ông dọc theo chiều rộng của nước Anh nhằm bảo vệ khu vực phía nam trước những cuộc tấn công của các bộ lạc từ Scotland. Trong lịch sử, bức tường Hadrian được xem là cột mốc ranh giới phía bắc của đế quốc La Mã và là đường biên giới đẹp nhất đế quốc này.

Tên gọi bức tường Hadrian đôi khi được nhiều người dân địa phương sử dụng để chỉ vùng biên giới giữa Scoland và Anh. Ngày nay, với một phần lớn bức tường còn lại, du khách luôn cảm thấy thoải mái khi tản bộ hoặc đạp xe dọc theo nó. 

Năm 1987, Tổ chức UNESCO đã xếp bức tường Hadrian vào danh sách những di sản thế giới. Hiện tại, nó là một trong những điểm tham quan nổi tiếng nhất khu vực phía bắc nước Anh với những nhà nghỉ giá rẻ dành cho khách du lịch trẻ đến những khách sạn đầy đủ tiện nghi. Ngoài ra, một loạt công trình lịch sử cũng được phục chế như khu luyện tập của các võ sĩ giác đấu, các doanh trại của những chiến binh La Mã…

Là một bức tường dài, hình chữ V, bằng đá, khắc tên của hơn 58.000 chiến binh Mỹ đã thiệt mạng hoặc mất tích trong cuộc chiến tranh Việt Nam giai đoạn 1959-1975. Bức tường nằm trong khu tưởng niệm các cựu chiến binh Mỹ tại Việt Nam nằm ở khu trung tâm thủ đô Washington D.C của Mỹ.

Bức tường được xây dựng từ hai tấm đá hoa cương đen mang từ Bangalore, Ấn Độ đến Mỹ có diện tích 8.100m², tổng chiều dài 150m, cao 3m do Maya Ying Lin, một nữ sinh viên kiến trúc người Mỹ gốc Hoa của Đại học Yale thiết kế.

Được khánh thành vào ngày 13-9-1982, cho đến nay mỗi năm bức tường này đón khoảng 3 triệu lượt khách tham quan.

Đó là bức tường bao xung quanh điện Kremlin ở Matxcơva, Nga. Bức tường gạch đỏ với 20 tòa tháp này đã tồn tại hơn 700 năm. Tường có chiều cao đến 19m, dày 6m với tổng chiều dài 2.235m.

Là một phần của biên giới nội địa nước Đức, chia cắt hai nước Đức từ ngày 13-8-1961 và là một trong những biểu tượng nổi tiếng nhất của thời Chiến tranh lạnh.

Hello there!

Great news today that China is going to go to Copenhagen and talk targets on climate change. In a way it is surprising seeing as a developing country it is understandable that China is worried about potential harm to its economic growth from climate change targets. As a communist dictatorship it is even more surprising that they care what the rest of the world thinks on this issue, but maybe they have come round to the widely held view that it is in all of our interests to do something concrete about climate change?

Personally I am convinced that climate change is a serious problem and that human beings are contributing to it. The scientific opinion from those who know is overwhelming. Yes, history shows that there may well be a natural pattern and cause also, but the way in which we are burning up fossil fuels and failing to make that substantial move to renewables that we clearly should do is poor indeed.

So come on China, come on President Obama, and come on Europe! We need definite, radical action now, the Cumbrian floods have emphasised that, and only governments can make those major changes.

Paris is one of the premier capitals of the world especially the romantic amongst us; over the years it has become one of the most visited cities in the world. Many couples decide to take short stay in Paris as it is probably the most romantic city in the world; with a great deal to see and do that really a week is needed.

Visitors flock to see its many wonderful buildings; it has much to offer visitors who adore culture, even if it is only for a long weekend. Traveling through the city of Paris can be very enjoyable; the underground train system or Metro can take you to anywhere within the city and is simple to use.

It wouldn’t be possible to visit this city without a trip to the top of the famous steel structure known as the Eiffel Tower; it’s visible throughout most of the city but the views from the top of this huge steel structure are even more impressive. You can be assured of an even more beautiful sight if you visit in the evening when it is illuminated; taking a tour at the same time will teach you much more about this remarkable structure.

On your Paris trip ensure you add the famous Champs Elysees to your list of places to visit; it’s where you will find all the top class hotels, shops and restaurants. This avenue may be select but it attracts large numbers of visitors daily; the exclusive five star hotels situated in this more select part of the city might be out of most visitors’ price range.

The city’s famous museum, the Louvre is huge and worth a visit if you have the time; it holds in excess of 300,000 pieces of art, which cannot possibly be seen in a single visit. If you are in Paris on a short stay you must plan your time well; approximately 8 million visitors a year come to see the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, both of which are on display. Over the years, Paris has been home to many of the world’s famous artists; painters like Monet and Picasso spent many years here and a large number of their art works can be seen in Paris today.

The famous 19th century edifice built on Napoleons instructions, the Arc de Triomphe, is also in Paris; to honor his generals (and his troops) he had their names inscribed upon it. It also features an observatory to take in surrounding views; in particular those obtained along the lanes that lead from it.

Certainly it is not fair to believe that these are the only places in the city worth visiting; these are however, the most popular with regular tours arranged, many of which are either free or at a subsidized cost. It is fair to say that you won’t see everything on a Paris short stay of two or even three day break; that would require a longer visit as you probably won’t have time to visit the gothic churches and castles in only a few days.

Thi hát chèo và têm trầu cánh phượng

Theo các cụ già ở đây kể lại: Thiền sư Không Lộ, vốn là người ở vùng này, là một vị thánh có nhiều phép biến hóa không biết thế nào mà lường. Lúc sinh thời từng làm nghề đánh cá trên sông Cái (sông Hồng), đến năm 29 tuổi mới đi tu. Tương truyền ngài từng chữa bệnh cho vua Lý nên được phong làm Quốc Sư. Sau đó vua Lý đổi tên chùa thành Thần Quang Tự. Ngày nay chùa vẫn giữ tên Thần Quang Tự, nhưng dân gian vẫn quen gọi là chùa Keo.

Du khách hành hương đến chùa Keo ngoài việc lễ phật, lễ thánh để cầu xin phước, đức, tài, lộc còn được ngắm nghía một không gian kiến trúc độc đáo vào loại hàng đầu trong kiến trúc chùa chiền Việt Nam. Chùa Keo gồm 19 tòa lớn nhỏ với 128 gian nằm trên một khuôn viên rộng rãi phía trong con đê quai sông Hồng.

Xưa kia ngôi chùa không nằm ở vị trí như bây giờ. Theo sách giới thiệu lịch sử chùa Keo của sở văn hóa thông tin Thái Bình ấn hành năm 1997 thì chùa Keo đã từng bị lũ sông Hồng năm 1611 cuốn trôi. Ngôi chùa hiện còn là ngôi chùa được dựng lại vào năm 1630 do công của một vị quan nhà Lê tên là Hoàng Nhân Dũng.

Trong chùa Keo, nét đặc sắc nhất là gác chuông. Đây là một công trình kiến trúc thể hiện bàn tay khéo léo và tinh tế của những người thợ điêu khắc, kiến trúc thế kỷ 17. Tòa gác chuông cao 11m gồm 3 tầng được làm hoàn toàn bằng gỗ theo lối chồng diêm, hoàn toàn bằng gỗ chứ không dùng gạch vữa.

Lễ hội chùa Keo

Còn đang thích thú với những kiến trúc độc đáo, du khách lại như bị hút hồn khi nghe thấy những giọng hát chèo vang vọng. Năm nào cũng vậy, cứ đến hội chùa Keo là người ta lại tổ chức thi hát những giọng hát chèo hay và thi têm trầu cánh phượng. Trong cuộc thi không chỉ có những người biểu diễn chuyên nghiệp mà du khách nào biết hát đều có thể đăng ký lên hát.

Những lời ca giản dị đệm nhịp bằng tiếng trống da quen thuộc cùng đàn tranh, phách tre không biết sao có sức quyến rũ lớn đến thế. Khách hành hương chẳng mấy chốc đứng xúm quanh để xem hát chèo. Cạnh đó, các đội thi têm trầu cánh phượng cũng đang thao tác thoăn thoắt tạo nên những miếng trầu cánh phượng nhìn đã muốn ăn.

Lễ hội chùa Keo cũng có hầu bóng. Nhưng hầu bóng ở đây người ta đem một chiếc thuyền bằng hàng mã ra hầu. Trên có hai người múa hát, hai bên có hai hàng cầm mái chèo mô tả động tác chèo thuyền theo nhịp trống, tiếng đàn. Một vài người khác ngồi xung quanh thuyền giấy cũng nghiêng ngả theo nhịp thuyền chèo và đưa thuyền tiến dần lên.

Summertime = Shave Ice Season In Hawaii!

Well, friends, summer is officially here, and you know what that means – it’s time to grab your surfboard, hit the beach, and catch some waves! (Or just lay out on the sand and work on that awesome tan!) Locals know, after a long day spent having fun in the hot Hawaiian sun, there’s no better way to cool off than with a refreshing, ice-cold cone of shave ice!

What is shave ice exactly? For those of you who haven’t had a chance to try it before, shave ice is a popular frozen treat found only in Hawaii that’s similar to a snow cone and consists of a heaping mound of very fine ice shavings doused with a liberal amount of one or more flavors of brightly colored, sweet syrup. Simple yet supremely satisfying, this oh-so-tasty treat is just the thing to beat the summertime heat!

(And, yes, it’s shave ice. No “d.” Not shaved ice!)

There are tons of different flavors available – strawberry, vanilla, pineapple, banana, coconut, root beer, mango, watermelon, and many, many more! There are way too many to list here. Can’t decide which flavor to try? Ask for a “rainbow” shave ice, and sample several different flavors at once!

Shave ice usually comes in either a paper cone cup or a small plastic bowl, and in addition to the huge assortment of flavors for you to choose from, most of the really popular shave ice places offer a number of optional add-ons as well. If you want, for a little bit extra, you can go all out and enjoy your shave ice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream underneath, a drizzle of sweetened, condensed milk up top, with mochi balls (bite-sized morsels of sticky Japanese rice cake) and azuki beans (sweetened Japanese red beans) – the works!

So now that you know what shave ice is all about, you might be wondering where to find some. The good news is shave ice isn’t terribly hard to find. There are quite a few places that serve shave ice; two of the most popular spots are Matsumoto’s on the North Shore of Oahu (established in 1951 and still going strong with as many as 1,000 servings of shave ice sold in a day!), and Waiola’s, also on Oahu, with two locations, both in town – the original store on Waiola St. in the McCully area and a second store on Kapahulu Avenue. Depending on when you go – afternoons are typically the busiest – expect to wait in line for a bit. Don’t worry, it’s well worth the wait!

This Edition’s BuzzWord – Vog!

Lately, we’ve been getting a lot of questions about vog, so here’s a quick primer addressing a few of the most frequently asked questions.

What is vog?

The term itself is a combination of the words “volcanic” and “smog” and describes the uncharacteristically grey, fog-like haze that sometimes settles upon parts of the Hawaiian Islands.

Where does it come from?

A volcano, and not just any volcano. We’re talking Kilauea, on the Big Island of Hawaii, one of the most active volcanoes on the planet, goin’ strong since January of 1983!

Kilauea emits on average two thousand tons of volcanic gases every day, and when these gases react with moisture, oxygen, and sunlight the result, my friends, is vog.

Usually, vog only affects the Western coast of the Big Island due to the prevailing tradewinds. Less commonly, south-blowing Kona winds carry vog to other parts of the state.

How does it affect me?

To be honest, a lot of first-time visitors to the islands don’t even notice it. Hawaii’s air is pretty clean after all, and vog isn’t nearly as much of an eyesore as the smog you might encounter in big cities around the world.

Unless you plan on spending a lot of time out on the westside of the Big Island, (or driving around Volcanoes National Park with the windows rolled down) chances are you won’t have to deal with voggy conditions at all.

If you do happen to be in the islands when vog-like conditions persist, for most people, the biggest concern will be the reduced visibility – after all, you are in the islands to sightsee!

On a more serious note, the long-term effects of prolonged vog exposure are still being studied (here we’re talking years and years of exposure). In the short term, folks who are highly susceptible to the stuff may experience skin irritation, watery eyes, runny noses, and other, flu-like symptoms.

If you’re an asthma sufferer or have a history of respiratory and/or circulatory ailments, do your best to stay indoors on days when the vog is at its worst. Luckily for everyone, days like these are fairly uncommon around here. Never fear, once the tradewinds return, vog rarely lasts for very long!

Zumindest sind das meist Leute, denen immer Sachen geschenkt werden, die man im späteren Leben nie mehr gebrauchen kann! Oder Ihnen wird einfach garnichts geschenkt…

Ich zähle dazu eigentlich überhaupt nicht. Sagt sicherlich jeder von sich…

You know what they say: “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em”.  That seems to be the approach several publications in America are taking in order to combat plummeting paper sales and the onslaught of internet news.

Hearst, Times Inc. and Condé Nast are apparently looking at joining forces in order to create an “online newsstand” from which they will sell their publications, without hard copy, to internet users.  Could this be the solution that the world’s newspapers and magazines have been looking for in order to finally utilise the internet as a financially viable tool?

As part of our course here at Edinburgh Napier, one of the modules we take in 1st year has been a tad depressing.  “Introduction to Journalism” has given us all an insight into the journalism industry, and we have found it to be in a sorry state.  With newspapers losing vast amounts of money on the running of their websites the chances of any of us getting a job at the end of our course are looking slim.  The outlook is bleak for the newspaper industry and, as a result, for budding journalists such as myself.

What these American organisations are proposing seems to be an elegant and intelligent solution to the dilemma.  Deemed an “iTunes for magazines” by many, it certainly seems to be plugging the drain down which has swallowed up so much of the industry’s money of late.  The way I see it, this could go one of two ways.

The project could be a roving success: it may be the case that people, conscientious about the environment and wasting paper, bored in the office, or simply fed up with the trudge to the newsagent in all manner of weather conditions, embrace this new, paper-free way of buying and reading their favourite newspapers and magazines, and herald it as the way forward for the industry as a whole.

Or, it may be that the whole thing is a complete flop.  The readers (or consumers, as the industry now refers to them as) might decide that they don’t like this new way of accessing publications.  If the organisations planning on piloting such a scheme keep their publications on sale as hard copy in the shops people may ignore this new system and simply go on buying a paper out of the shop as they always have done, and the whole thing would be a colossal amount of money down the toilet.  And then it’d be back to the drawing board for news organisations, square one on the global media monopoly, having gone to jail, not “pass-go”ed and failed to collect their £200.

I say go for it.  Trial and error: it’s how we ended up with the wheel.
