The XX: fighting pretentiousness one programmed blip at a time

The XX are the kind of band that hits you over your head with their youth. Like, when I listen to them I’m like “Damn, this is good. Why the hell couldn’t I be this prolific at 20?” Impending quarter-life crisis aside, England’s doing some good things with music and The XX are part of that nouveau pop movement. Their self-titled debut is littered with ultra lo-fi, soft-spoken, melodic and melodramatic gems and their level of musical sophistication is ridiculous (I don’t think it’s easy to make “quiet” music) and so completely relevant. My new favourite band, by far.

After the jump, check out “Shelter,” remixed by L.A. producer Them Jeans and the original. It’s a good introduction to their sound, but when you listen to the original you’ll be surprised at its sparsity.

I am about to take off to the cottage for the weekend but before I do I wanted to post up a few tracks that I’ve been digging this past week…

Grum made his way back to me with this heavy take on Tommy Sparks’ Miracle.  This track is terrific. The combination of the chorus with Grum’s talented ability to provide a fitting backdrop speaks for itself.  I love the bassline.  This will be played a few times at the cottage I’m sure.  The producer/remixer kicks off an Australian tour just after Christmas so if you’re in the area hit it up.

The latest from Gloves was worth the wait.  Too Much To Dream is a b-side brought to us by Discodust and hones the dreamy synth filter sound that I love so much.  Soft and sensual, kick back and easily relax to this beauty.

This next track caught me off guard.  The SONIXX lightened up the hard hitting Bloody Beetroots for four minutes to make one stellar combination of traditional Beetroot mashing and light innovative music.  The vocals pop out the song a bit and help it reach that dreamy atmosphere I seem to be in for these last two songs.  It’s not your usual mix which is why I think I like it so much.

Anyway, off to celebrate the 23rd in style.

A friend has been bugging me about The xx.  I got home late tonight and put them on.  Good timing. Their music is made for the last-scotch-of-the-night, winding down, droopy eyelids hour. The sound includes touches of electro, a dash of  soul-bossanova, a little r&b and well-placed guitars all tied together by the guazey boy-girl vocals of Oliver Sim and Romy Croft.  The London 4-piece plays a kind of downer-pop that may go down as my favorite release of the year. Sorry for the hiatus- I made the unfortunate mistake of placing an ‘empty’ beer can on my windowsill and a strong gust of wind blew through and knocked the can right onto my laptop keyboard. Sucks. The Apple Store  ‘genius’ guy told me the logic board was damaged, so I didn’t touch it until I received another macbook. Got it for a good deal, too. So for almost two weeks of being down, now we’re up & running once again!

I’m sure some of you kids probably heard this last night in LA. West coast party favorite, Them Jeans, threw together a new remix of The xx that has caught my ear the other day, adding to the sizable list of remixes that he’s completed within the last couple years. Like this track? Check out The XX’s single, Basic Space, that came out earlier this month when you have a chance.

The Metronomy remix of Joakim’s “Spiders” became recently available on K7 Records, that is coupled with the original as well as another track titled “I Can See” (Long Lost Demo) that is well worth checking out. Love love love Joakim’s production. For some incentive? Take a listen to Joakim’s rework of the Metronomy track “Not Made For Love.” It’s a nice lo-fi listen that will be sure to leave a smile on your face.

Some new glittery, disco-y remix work by Breakbot. This time it’s another heavily vocalized piece, originally done by Severin, titled “On The Edge of a Sunday” that fits in quite nicely with Breakbot’s previous works. Nobody captures a carefree, bubbley vibe like Breakbot does. Looking forward to the full-length that Breakbot has been working on lately, that will be out later this year on Ed Banger. Also check out “Penelope Pitstop,” another track of his that’s been floating around.

Severin – On The Edge of a Sunday (Breakbot Remix)

The XX is an indie band from London. They make beautifully chilled out songs with alternating girl and boy vocals. The end product being the equivalent to a wool blanket and glass of hot chocolate on a cold Winter day. Their newest record XX has just been released on world famous label, Rough Trade. It’s definitely going to be the soundtrack for many of an art school freshman this upcoming semester. Aside from a stellar original, Dim Mak DJ Them Jeans has already given one track the remix treatment. Making “Shelter” a tad less melancholy and a lot more dance floor friendly.
