Corsix has released a version of CorsixTH, his Theme Hospital clone, in time for Christmas. It is actually fairly complete.

CorsixTH is a ‘rival project’ to OpenTH, or its ’sister project’ as it is described in the blog post about it on the OpenTH website. It’s not really a rival though, as we are hardly in competition. In fact, I think CorsixTH has a wonderful design. Much of the code is done in Lua instead. OpenTH uses Lua but only for behaviours, not for actual coding. I will carry on working on OpenTH though, I think there is space for both projects. The only thing I want to know is how the hell Corsix got this done whilst being at Oxford

I will also be posting on the OpenTH mailing list later.

Also check out Corsix’s blog post about it.

The nice people over at MoretotheGame, who I seem to be plugging far too much, are thinking of bringing a new feature to their avid readers, and because they asked nicely, for once, I am going to join in. But because I’m evil, I’m going to jump the gun and post the article here, before they do, so you all get a sneak preview, and I get… well… not much really. The topic: What game should people play before they die. My contribution: Theme Hospital.

Theme Hospital

There are people who don’t like old games. They would see system requirements like 75MHz processor, 16MB of RAM and Direct X 5, and immediately return the game to the shelf to find the latest GTA, Call of Duty or Halo. Those people are fools and deserve to miss out on the greatness that these games have to offer. Others will pick it up and read the blurb which asks “Can you balance the books and the bedpans?” and decide that any sort of financial balancing act is beyond them. “Design maintain and manage a hi-tech hospital facility?” they would scoff, “Making the most of limited resources and turning cures into cash? Who do you think I am?” They chuckle to their equally idiotic friend. “You’ll be struck by the fun, if you don’t get struck off.” They will guffaw, put the game back in the wrong place and then go off to beat a prostitute over the head and claim that this is the best thing ever. They are fools and should be shot. Twice.

Now, whilst I don’t have a specific problem with GTA (even if the franchise is horribly dead), or CoD, which can offer some fun, even Halo, in all its horrendously overrated glory, can provide moments of fun, they do not bear comparison to the joy offered by a Bullfrog title like Theme Hospital.

Let me take you back to your childhood. When you were young and asked “What is it you want to be when you grow up?” you probably said “Batman” or “Wonder woman”, maybe “Princess” for some of the boys at the back, you might have said you wanted to be a fireman, or a vet. deep down, however, we all know what you meant. Really you wanted to be a hospital administrator. You always wanted the pleasure of choosing who to hire, you wanted to manage details like making sure patients had enough seating, you wanted to ensure you had fire extinguishers ready, enough heating to keep people warm. Make sure there were toilets and a staff room. All the little details. You wanted the chance to entertain visiting VIPs, impress the hospital board and get a promotion.

I can hear you all laughing. You think I’m crazy. There is no way that something like this could be fun. What is this silly man talking about? This isn’t a game I should be playing before I die. Well, the intro video will probably go some way to showing you that this game isn’t all about hard work.

(Video from Youtuber NHJBV)

If you think you are in for just simple diseases, think again. This is a 1997 Bullfrog game, it has humour. Diseases include Bloaty head (which needs popping), Invisibility, Slack Tongue (Which needs chopping off) and baldness (Yes there is a cure!). Your wonderful receptionist will ask people not to die in the corridor, keep their germs to themselves and, of course, telling the morgue patients to be quiet. Even hiring staff members can be fun when you read some of the personality descriptions provided.

There is depth to this game, varying missions, all with different requirements, chances to shoot rats between some levels, and trying to get one up on the other, computer controlled, hospitals, all with familiar names. There is a multi-player option, but that isn’t as easy as it sounds. This was a DOS game, and as such the protocols available in the multi-player patch (Serial Cable, Modem, and IPX/SPX) aren’t really available on modern PCs. There are some work-a-rounds, but none for the more recent OSs, at least that I’ve found. That’s no great loss, and the other patch, the one that makes people pregnant, is still alive and kicking.

So why do I want you all to run a hospital before you die? This game is funny. I don’t just mean that you will snicker a bit at people as you watch them use the toilet, I mean there is a layer of humour here that Bullfrog did well in the games of this era. The game play is great, the challenge really does grow as you progress, and the graphics, while not super-realistic, aren’t too shabby for a game that is now 12 years old.

There are no invading armies (except some rats), there are no guns (except for use on aforementioned rats), there are no prostitutes (at least as far as I know), no zombies (although people can die) and there isn’t and Hot coffee (although people can get pregnant), but this is game in many ways superior to GTA IV, CoD 4, Halo 3, and many other modern games.

This is Theme Hospital. On the PC not the PlayStation. This needs to be played before you die.

So, I play a lot of games. Since this is a blog about my life, I’ll document some old compute

So, I play a lot of games. Since this is a blog about my life, I’ll document some old computers games that I like to play. I haven’t bought a new computer game in a long time so I stick with old games I either have already or download online for free. First, my ultimate favorite computer game/franchise will always be The Sims. I just wanted to point that out as a given for me.

Tropico. You play the dictator of an island. I know, I know, I have always voiced my love of democracy but this game is fun. It’s basically a simulation game where you control an island located in the Caribbean. The fun party for me comes in the beginning where you get to control what kind of dictator you’ll be. You can choose to be a famous dictator or you can customize your characteristics. For me I always choose to be a dictator that has traits that align more with the U.S. over Russia. Also, to have positive traits of being a scholar and environmentalist and make sure one of my negative traits is that I’m a religious zealot and gambler. That way you please the intellectuals and religious groups at the beginning of the game as well as have opportunities to score money and boost tourism through the gambling industry. The other fun part comes when you screwup the island and make people unhappy. Then you will notice people will disappeared into the forest to join coups and they will come back to try to overthrow the government. Of course, this part only depends on whether or not you set the political difficultly in the game on medium or hard. Anyways, it’s a fun game, play, theres also nice soundtrack in the game….theres different expansion packs too. Here’s the opening sequence of the game, you can find game play videos on youtube.

If you never heard of or seen the game Chip’s Challenge, then you’re dead to me. Anyways, it’s a classic MS-DOS from 1995(?). It’s basically a puzzle where you do all the necessary things to finish before the clock runs out. It has at least 149 levels though I never made it that far. Even though the game is fun, my determination to complete a level causes me to become addicted and so I have to force myself not to play. You should definitely play this game. Here’s a preview of one level, the music isn’t the music that’s actually in the game lol

Sim Tower. Came out in 1994 and it’s an all around fun game. You build a skyscraper an manage it. It’s like an indoor city. Anyways, since I have other sims games to mention, heres a preview of the game,

Wooooo, next is SimCopter!!! ahem, one of my favorite games ever! You’re a pilot (duh) and you go around the city (Sim City) and do missions. From clearing traffic jams to putting out fires to stopping criminals to rescuing the injured. Some might find the controls of the game difficult as well as the game being a little glitchy but that’s to be expected in old games….or maybe I just have low expectations(?) lol. After you win every level and return to the hangar, you’re greeted by weird looking Sims(?) playing marching band music and theres fireworks. Here’s a video of the gameplay,

SimSafari. This game is fun because…it has animals in it…. You manage a safari refuge place. You try to keep the balance. You provide enough food to the animals and choose which one you want in the safari. It’s important to not over-run the place with lions when you only have a few buffalo. The lions will eat the buffalo to extinction and go after other animals, then they’ll die off because they have no other animals to eat. Of course you could just purchase more animals but it cost money. You also set up a campsite area for visitors and you’re profit comes from the tourism. The one video I found of gameplay sucked so I’ll just provide a screenshot.

Who could forget Theme Park on MS-DOS by Bullfrog. This game was fun for many reason. The only issue I had with it is that the park visitors seem to be habitual vomiters. Why can’t they wait to get to the bathroom to throw up. I’ve been to many theme parks and the obsessive vomiting doesn’t happen. Other then that, the can is uber-fun.

Rollercoaster Tycoon is extremely fun, at least until you’ve successfully created every rollercoaster possible. The only issue for me in this game as well as Theme Park is the staff. I like to set certain work areas for the staff and they don’t even follow that sometimes. They still venture off to other sides of the park, maybe it’s a glitch, idk.

Stronghold! Game where you’re basically building a settlement, castle and trying to keep the economy going and people happy as you fend off rival camps. I have to be honest, I don’t like the war part of the game because I always eventually lose. The beginning part of the game where you basically play in a sandbox mode, I like because it’s kind of a sims version except it takes place in the middle age. You just make sure weapons are made, food is caught and everyone is happy. Though, eventually you’ll have to build a castle because enemies will come. Anyways, heres a clip of how I like to play the game,

Theme Hospital. I absolutely love this game. I actually played it years ago on Playstation, I rented it from the video store, went back to re-rent it and it was gone! They stopped renting out the game. So, a couple years later I looked for the MSDOS version and I found it! It’s a game where you manage the hospital. You deal with patients and make sure staff knows what they’re doing. You have to deal with equipment breaking, new diseases, and staff constantly asking for a raise.

BlasterBall. I love this game because it’s a time waster. It also helps with hand and eye coordination then the other games I listed above. The gist of the game is easy, make sure you hit the ball and delete the blocks. I couldn’t find a video of the version 1 game that I played, but this is a video of version 2 and it’s the same idea,

Well, I actually had a couple more games to mention but I have other things to do online and offline so this is my honorable mentions list.

Sim City 3000 Unlimited

Frogger

Diner Dash

The Game of Life

Yahoo Chess

Centipede

Space Invaders

Snake Game

Paperboy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mahjong

Yahoo Battleship (I excel at this game )

and some others but I have to go!

haha, off topic as it’s not a computer game, or at least I never played it on computer, but I just remembered that I loved playing Animal Crossing on Nintendo Gamecube….don’t tell anyone I said….the game was addictive though, had to stop playing years ago before it consumed my life and caused me to drop out of HS lol.

Probably should add that you can get most of these games for free online and free to download, except Tropico, but I’m sure I pretty much saw a torrent for that game…. Anyway, a google search and maybe some extra digging will get you to them.

II wojna światowa, alianci vs sowieci, rycerze i smoki, gryfy i krasnoludy, konflikt, wojna, surowce, krew.

Medycyna z tylnego siedzenia

W zakresie naszych działań, poza samym urządzeniem szpitala, występują m.in. zatrudnianie personelu szpitalnego: lekarzy, pielęgniarek, recepcjonistek i pracowników sanitarnych (tzw.

A wszystko to by wyprzeć z rynku konkurencję (docelowo poza nami funkcjonują trzy inne wielkie placówki) i wprowadzić monopol w światowej medycynie (również i w farmacji, bo w grze można prowadzić własne badania naukowe).

a

Przy Theme Hospital zasięgnąłem kilogram screenów od:

This brought back memories. ——————————

This brought back memories.

—————————————Reading back on this i realise that this may seem like it’s from the mind of a true computer nerd. You can think that if you want, but if you have any problems with the tiny details go find a very high cliff to jump off because i dont give two shits if you know more than me.. a monkey knows more than me…these are just memories————————————————————————–

I can nearly still smell the varnish on the wooden floors of my best friends dining room, where, like a great big paper weight the almighty IBM personal computer sat humming like a beehive. Everything was massive…the disks were massive, the buttons were massive, the pixels were massive…all except for the screen, which by todays standards would be fairly tiny!

The old 8″ floppy disks were by no means compact and barely had enough space for even todays smallest word documents. But for the two of us, still only 6 or 7, these plastic cards meant incredible amounts of fun even if we hadn’t a clue what we were doing! I distinctly remember one game, Digger - fairly close to the graphics of pacman or there abouts. We would only be alowed play however when the older siblings were there to set it up, and then again only if they even let us have a go!

This is the very first memory i have of computers…. next to come was my brothers Atari ST and wonderful games like “Super Hang on“, “Rainbow Island – The Story of Bubble Bobble“, “Dizzy” and a simple painting and typing application that barely ever worked. Between, the Nintendo in constant use at my friends house, and their brand new Gateway 2000 with windows 95 my life was set to revolve around computer technology for many years to come as it still is today! While the Nintendo was providing the two of us with such treats as Mario 1 to 3 and the included Duck Hunt (With the collest bright red gun …EVER) and other games like “Goal!”, “California Games” and “Top Gun”…. the PC was altogether a whole new kettle of fish to the two of us.

It amazes me now to think of how capeable we were as computer users nearly 13 years ago. Regardless of our age, anyone who remembers loading anything on the first windows PCs will recall the knowledge required to boot certain games. “C: ….C:Worms ….C:worms run…” and if you were lucky the little white flashing dot would dissapear and our favourite childhood game would play its forever hillarious introduction video. Barely ten years old we were starting to explore the PC and try things without ever knowing what we were doing. We must have absolutely destroyed that poor computer, nothing was too important to delete or too broken to be fixed.. if something went wrong we knew how to fix it, or at least we knew how to hide it!

I don’t think we had a computer in our house until my Dad finally gave in a couple of years later.. i was probably about 10 years old and it was a good old Siemens with Windows 95 that gave me an opportunity to explore at home. It is amazing to think just how interesting a computer can be to a 10year old. These were the days when the Internet was just a “did you know” article at the back of the Sunday newspaper… so while it may seem now that i was restricted to “just a PC” , to me that PC would forever have a room i had not gone into, a corner where i had yet to check for something “cool”.

The “cool” things would include “Hover” and a video of a Weezer song on the Windows 95 cd… i cant remember how many times i played those two things, always felt new. Microsoft golf would provide the catchphrases of my child hood with phrases like “oooo that’s on the beach” being belted out in our best “American twang “at every apropriate moment.

Among the most memorable of PC games from this period was Daggerfall. I remember my brother convincing my dad while out buying presents one dark Christmas Eve, that the Skeleton with rotting flesh that was jumping out from the cover of the box was nothing to worry about, and that it was just a harmless game. My dad buckled and Christmas day my brother installed one of the games of my childhood. Daggerfall Elder Scrolls Vol. II was to me the most incredible feat of computer game production ever. While i never did finish the game the opportunity to create a completely new individual and exist in an endless world of characters and adventure was always truly appealing. For years me and my friend would fall in and out of love with this game..rediscovering it every so often on a rainy day. Bethesda Softworks have continued to add brilliantly to the Elder Scrolls name and have brought it into the world of modern game-play, maintaining its quality and unique character.

Along with this would sit the almighty “Sid Meier’s Civilization“. There is something invaluable about a game which both entertains and teaches.. but of course we were unaware of the teaching part. Not until I started studying history in Secondary School did i realise that i already knew of the Crusades and Sun Tzu’s War Academy.. and of the natural progression of the historical ages and developments in technology. Of course i was aware that Babylon’s Hanging Gardens did not in reality automatically provide every Babylonian city with a granary but the basis was there… and now that i think of it, that is fairly invaluable.

Need i mention Warcraft II…..pure brilliance!

And so time moved on, Nintendo developed to SNES and on to the N64, while Windows 95 grew to 98 and 2000. The games came and went also, the Kings Quest series developed nicely though the ages and Kings Quest VI would often find itself being reinstalled as the lack of a manual meant Alexander could not go any further (this would be fixed later in life) “Eee gaz is that cold!” … On the SNES “Secret of Mana” was the perfect challenge, while extremely difficult it was possible to finish it in time, and the co-op option was a real first for us. This game would prove to rear its head often in my life and will again in the future i am sure! Along with SOM on the SNES came Rock and Roll Racing “Ivan is in another time ZONE!!” and all the other obvious classics! Sensible Soccer provided a constant frustration for me while the Apache series was always a bit of fun. With the Nintendo 64 came the unbeatable, and in my opinion the best shoot-em-up of its time, “GoldenEye“! The idea of four players and a forever smooth game-play and realistic graphics made this simply the most playable game of its time. Even today in the days of physics engines and intense reality in shoot-em-up games, GoldenEye would be able to capture the attention of anybody young or old. It was simply fun. And if you ever got bored there was always MarioKart 64 battle mode which was simply perfect and endless fun.

I never owned any of these consoles and my experiences were always thanks to my friend and his brother who would religiously update their Nintendo at every opportunity. The never did invest in playstation or Sega, those games never really did feature in my childhood except for those that were also on PC and this was and is often the case. There was always a slight animosity towards the other games console…you were either Nintendo or Sega, Playstation or Nintendo.. and this still exists today to an extent. However i feel that Nintendo has maintained a constant individuality that forever cemented its commercial value.. Mario cannot be found anywhere else, and today with the Wii they have even isolated much of the game-play and interaction with the games…thus there is only one way to really play Mario Galaxy…and thats on a Wii.. i dont believe Playstation have this quality.

I could always buy those games on PC anyway.. and while there were many many games, certain ones stand out. I was getting older and thus had less time for games, but in a way the games began to grow with me. “Quake” I, II and III were beyond anything i had experienced with blood and gore… while the first “Grand Theft Auto” introduced me for the first time to drugs and crime on a computer game..the cars were cool and fast and anything seemed possible! Other games were just ridiculous, “Carmageddon” was fairly evil but provided hours of mindless fun, while “Theme Hospital” would always seem appealing until you remember just how hard and annoying the second level was! Then there were the franchise games that made an effect, while there have always been games to back up the movie or popular TV programme of the time, most of these were truly awful and just badly made…those that i remember being fairly good include “Earthworm Jim” and “Star Wars:Jedi Knight II“, the latter being a bit of a jump into the future i know but it was such an enjoyable, well made game i think it needed a mention here.

One cannot forget to mention the EA sports series of sports games here.. personally for me, that would mean Fifa ‘97 and Fifa ‘00 which really showed great leaps in football simulation and proper graphics (mainly Fifa 97 because Ginola was the MAN!).

While there are so many games worth a mention, especially as we get closer to todays quality, i think there is only one more that truely had an effect on me and was able to properly surprise me.

I think “Half Life” truly reminded me of how far computer games had come. A friend of mine who passed away recently gave me the game for free when he told me that he was not allowed play it because it was too violent and detailed. This of course interested me hugely. It was no lie. The games unique intro sequence as your character enters the Black Mesa complex by train was just the first in a series of brilliant story telling and unique qualities to this game. Extremely intelligent AI and realistic game-play and interaction with the environment meant you were hooked in seconds…that is of course if you had a computer strong enough to play it. It took me time to get one of them. Half Life II, while lacking in story and uniqueness did introduce for the first time a truly staggering detail in graphics and the now renowned physics engine that reflect a true interaction with nearly everything in the game.

It is amazing how a visit to the Computer museum at the Grand Arch of Paris would prompt such a response from me but i guess some things in your life are hard to forget, and some you just don’t want to. It would be ignorant of me to deny that any of the games mentioned above or any of the tens of others that i have not mentioned, did not have a great effect on my life and my ability to do the things that i do today…. the life between the tips of my fingers and my laptop is based entirely on a giant 8″ disk being slotted into a giant IBM computer with a tiny screen on a dining room table in my best friends house 15 years ago..

.. i better not get started on the effect of cartoons….perhaps ill do that another day!

Otherwise today i took a lot of photos of modern architecture! How refeshing here in paris to have a touch of modernity, i will be back there. hope my photos work out in dublin. good luck to all the TAF people of trinity next week and every body go check it out!

It’s storming outside today. I suppose it would be worse if it was raining as well, so here goes: At least it’s not raining.

I had a lovely weekend. Kev came over and we ate lots of nice food. I’d made muffins with blackberries and white chocolate in them. It was just the noms and we managed to eat all 12 of them before the sunday came to an end. Fatties! I really like cooking when there’s someone to eat it with. It’s not nearly as much fun if I’m alone. I suppose sharing makes almost everything better though.

We also played this little game a lot:

I can’t believe how much fun it still is! Quite a few hours of pure enjoyment, even though you’d prolly get stress related brain damage if you played too much of it in one go.

this week is gonna be nice and short. I have Friday off since I’m going to Weymouth to meet the Bruces. I’m looking forward to it so much! Today’ll be a bit different as well. I’m having my health and safety education this afternoon from 12.45 till 16.00. Hopefully it’s not all too boring, although I suspect I won’t be that lucky. We’ll see. I’ll be going to the gym after work today as well, so coming home early isn’t going to happen, especially since I’m going to go pick up my Fallout 3 at the post office when I get into town. Only problem is that the post office is in the opposite part of town from where I live, so it’ll be a little trek. I’m dreading it already.

You think you have what it takes to become a hospital administrator?
Then try your skills with Theme Hospital, Bullfrog’s best game ever. Deal with cocky doctors, docile nurses, and the not-so-handy-handymen. They could get tired, and this obviously would hassle you and your patients. Build diagnostic rooms, treatment rooms, and rooms for more personal use. Finally, don’t forget to manage your finances. Bankruptcy is the sure way to losing!
Patients with all kinds of complaints are your main source of income so take good care of them. They could die from lousy treatment, or leave your hospital in disgust at your method of running. So make sure you get a Slicer to hack away the extra tongue growth from speaking too much about soap operas. Employ at least two surgeons to repair Broken Hearts, and remove Kidney Beans and Spare Ribs. Hire a nurse and she’ll give them medicines to cure the Uncommon Cold, Gastric Ejections, and other ailments.
Do you think you’re still up to it? Then strap yourself to the computer chair and play. You won’t notice time pass by, but it will help if you have a dose of non-pharmaceutic grade caffeine from coffee to get you through your all nighters. Just make sure you don’t do this very often or you’ll get admitted to a real hospital.

Enjoy!
