On Halloween night eight years ago, groans and moans filled the air, but not by any spooky creatures of the night. These terrifying howls echoed through hospital halls as a first time mom felt the pains of childbirth. The howling carried on through the night until 2:50 a.m. when our precious baby girl entered the world on November 1.

As I held our tiny baby for the first time, her big brown eyes looked up at me and I cried tears of joy. She was so beautiful. Even then, she looked just like her dad, Allan, and we knew that her chosen name, Allana Rose, fit her perfectly.

It’s hard to believe that 8 years have passed, but as the years have flown by, I’ve treasured watching our Allana Rose blossom into an amazing young girl.

Happy 8th Birthday, Allana Rose.

On the last Saturday in October, we celebrate Guavaween which is Tampa’s (actually Ybor City’s

On the last Saturday in October, we celebrate Guavaween which is Tampa’s (actually Ybor City’s) Latin version of a Halloween Mardi Gras. Throughout the night, young and old parade the streets in slutty creepy outlandish costumes.

Year after year (many moons ago before marriage and children), I found myself dressed in costume and beer crawling through the crowded streets of Ybor City with thirty thousand of my closest friends.

As crazy as it sounds, Guavaween will always have a special spot in my heart.

Dressed as a Brownie on a cold Guavaween night fourteen years ago, I traded Girl Scout cookies for beer. Then, at some point during that crazy chilly night, my girlfriend and I found our way into the Green Iguana to escape the crowd and warm my cookies.

While warming up in the bar with a cold beer, I smiled at a young lad standing across the smoky room. He smiled back and proceeded to walk over to introduce himself. As he gazed upon me, my knees went weak and I knew I was looking into the eyes of my future husband.

It was truly love at first sight. He says my smile entranced him, but more than likely it was the cookies hanging out my shorts and my belted fishnets that caught his attention.

Since there were so many great costumes at Gauavaween, I always traveled with a camera to capture some of my favorite ones on film. I also happened to capture the moment I met Allan.

Although it was all too cliché and too surreal for me to process, we chatted for a while and before we parted our ways, he asked me for my phone number. Since it seemed silly to meet a decent fellow in a bar, the rational side of my brain instructed me to not wait by the phone especially for a guy who hits on your in a bar on Guavaween.

However, he did call a few days later and we arranged for our first date on November 1, which years later would be recognized as another noteworthy celebration when our first daughter was born on that same date.

Since becoming a grown-up and a mom, I’ve gotten away from Guavaween, but I still celebrate the event every year in my heart as the night I met my true love. And of course, we I still celebrate it by parading around in costumes.

Their has been drastic change in how the websites have been evolved in the past few years but we must say that that call to action is now very much clearer of these websites and the pattern how the websites have been prompted in the user arena and how it has been made upto date according to the latest fashion.

Many websites provide features after they you have been loged in whats suits youi best and what will you prefer the old good days or would you like to flow in the new changing river? do let me know through your comments.

Marriage. It takes place, traditionally and idealistically, when two people, preferably (same sex marriage is accepted in some parts of the world) a male and female, face the altar and start to live happily ever after (well, I suppose so).

Virginity. Women, for centuries, are bound to chastity and celibacy until marriage. It is an anatomical and a physiological state characterized by not having sexual intercourse and masturbation, for that matter.

Marriage and virginity.

Or is it virginity and marriage?

Two short simple words.

Two simply interrelated terms.

Two contested concepts.

During the olden times (how olden is olden when classifying history?), women are expected and obliged to keep their virginity intact until their marriage. Marriage, during those times is seen as a very sacred ceremony that involves two people (take note, I didn’t say two people in love), two people in that they may be or may not be in love. Two people directly involved in an arranged marriage—two people, a man and a woman. If marriage was (I don’t think it is still the case now) seen as a very sacred ceremony, virginity on the other hand was (again, not the case now) seen as a virtue of chastity—a characteristic of the perfect and ideal woman. Men, still in those days, prefer virgin women than those with sexual experiences. If there were non-virgin women in those times, it implies that there were also non-virgin men but the pressure on women is way, by trillion miles heavier than those of men’s (I don’t even think that pressure is or was ever imposed on men). And if there were non-virgin women, is virginity a prerequisite or a requisite for marriage?

Nowadays, virginity and marriage are still interrelated concepts but both terms (the way I see it) are underrated in that ladies and gentlemen of all ages are drawn to abuse the sanctity of both concepts. Marriage for that matter is seen as merely a piece of paper that can be voided by another piece of paper (annulment, legal separation and divorce). Marriage is no longer a sacred ceremony that must be respected by everyone. What defines marriage now is a long roll of wedding carpet embedded on the long center aisle of the Saint Peter’s Basilica, with emeralds, diamonds and other precious stones engraved in a pair of ring, highlighted by classy gowns paired with expensive sexy heels, to be followed by a reception at the Hampton’s. That is marriage in the 21sty century. Virginity on the other hand is nothing but a belief, a tradition (lousy in that), and a custom that doesn’t require to be followed. Being a non-virgin is not seen as a violation in any constitution in any political system. Some people treat virginity as a piece of cake, ready to be spoiled anytime if you don’t eat it right away. Since some women of the 21st century do not see virginity as a prerequisite or requisite for getting married, marriage is never a goal for some women of the 21st century (not generalizing)—it is merely a something, not an event because events wouldn’t be called events for nothing, a something that isn’t anticipated by some women.

I am seventeen years, ten months and counting. I wonder where I would rather be in. In the early days when marriage is sacred, virginity is an unwritten law and women’s liberty is low? Or in the modern days where marriage is an A sized bond paper, virginity is a food that must be eaten right away and traditions, virtues, cultures and customs are at stake?

How about you? Where do you think you would rather be in?

I am seventeen years, ten months old, counting and functioning. You are reading, pondering, reflecting and thinking.

P.S. In all terms, I didn’t generalize. Assumptions are in effect.

- End -

Good morning, CK friends! Happy Columbus Day and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to you!

I love that there are so many holidays this time of year and that they give us a reason to gather together with our families. It’s so great to see everyone, take lots of photos of family members interacting with one another and hear about all the latest happenings.

These gatherings give me material for my favorite types of scrapbook pages—the ones that compare similarities between family members, tell classic family stories or serve as a way to tell someone how special they are to me. Take a look at the following three layouts for ideas you can use for pages about your family.

What family members share physical traits?

Look for the look-a-likes. Looking through old photos, I came across some pictures of my brother as a little boy and was struck by how much his daughter looks like him (their temperaments are also very similar, but that’s a story for another day). What physical traits do your family members share?

What family members share similar interests and tastes?

Recognize commonalities. List your likes and dislikes to discover who has similar tastes. This page from Maggie Holmes tells how she shares her sense of style and fashion with her grandmother. Who in your family do you share similar interests or preferences with?

What family member do you want to be like?

Pick up their best qualities. On this page, Brenda Arnall writes about how she wants to follow her grandmother’s example of making her grandchildren feel special. What traits and talents do you hope to emulate or learn from your family members?

What family member do you want to be like? Why? Leave us a comment and share your story. For more great ideas about recording family traits, stories, photos and memorabilia, check out Emily Falconbridge’s article “Handed Down” in our November 2009 issue.

Flashback to 1974. School Recess, Bedford Hills, New York

When I was ten years old, recess was my favorite part of the school day. Looking back with the benefit of time, what I remember most is the absolute chaos that occurred. We sprinted out of the school building and continued to run, jump, fall, organize games of tag, kickball and anything else that allowed us to play. Of course there were also a few schoolyard fist fights that only add to my fond memories. The teachers had to demand that we return to the classrooms, often times the principal was called for added weight. Rarely, if ever, did I return from recess without breaking a sweat, skinning a knee or being out of breath.

Flashforward to 2009. Upper East Side of Manhattan.

I am jogging with a personal training client past the school yard of an elite private academy. It is recess time and the children are listlessly milling around, many of them standing in small groups looking into their iphones.

This scene says so much about where are children are heading.

Funny how cleaning up the house for my birthday (which was last Sunday!) can dig up certain memories

Funny how cleaning up the house for my birthday (which was last Sunday!) can dig up certain memories that you thought you had forgotten. I’m not talking about those memories that you cherish and want to keep close to your heart, but the “smaller” ones that never “really mattered” but was still nostalgic when you look back on it. Here’s a small sample of what I’ve managed to find (almost all of which actually belonged to my elder brother).

Who uses them anymore?

Each can hold a stunning 1.4 megs of disk space!

ONE!

I will be keeping the Tekken 2 manual, who knows, some collector might want it one day. But the rest goes into the trash. Other things thrown away included: some telephone directory books from 2003, notes from my Masters and early PhD days, as well as a couple of caps that were too small for me to wear.
