Dear Goddess,

Help me! My adult son is moving back in with me. What am I going to do? I finally have this great sex life … we have frequent vigorous sex and I don’t want to give that up. What am i going to do? I have 2 bedrooms my son could sleep in, one is across the hall from my bedroom, the other is below my bedroom.

Signed,

Frustrated lover

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Dear Frustrated Lover,

Don’t get your panties in a wad. There are a variety of options for you and your lover. First of all, why are you letting your son come back? Kick his butt out and tell him to get his life together. Oops, you want advice about the sex!

Christmas/Hanukkah is coming!

Let your son know how concerned you are for his health and talk about the importance of a good night’s sleep. Buy him a gift basket with a sound machine, high-quality ear plugs and a face mask.. Not being able to see can sometimes impact hearing. Or maybe you could buy him a new Bose headset, the sound blocking ones.

Do you have a shed? or other type of out-house that could be renovated for the ‘child’?

I guess I’d be remiss if I didn’t ask; how loud is your sex? On a scale of 1 to 10, where one is muffled breathing and 10 is window rattling ecstasy? If you’re the silent type then the issue is moot… isn’t it? If you’re closer to a 10, how about a gag?

Before the child moves back in, I suggest the three of you sit down, over stiff drinks, and discuss the upcoming changes. He’s probably totally freaked out that his mother even has sex-if he’s even contemplated that. Talk about overall expectations for the new living relationship from all perspectives. Talk about respect, privacy, yada yada…..You and your partner will need to tell him that you have an intimate life, sparing him the details of course. Help him understand that as adults in a healthy relationship you have an active sex life. And, of course that you’re not going to curtail your sex life because he’s moving in. Suggest that everyone will probably undergo some apprehension but that sensitivity and courtesy rule the day. If he can’t handle it, he can begin to look for alternative living arrangements!

A couple of days ago I caught up with surface designer extraordinaire Ella Doran, to find out what she’s up to during the London Design Festival.

Quite a lot it turns out. And what’s more, it’s all for a good cause.

As part of their House of Cards campaign (which aims to raise awareness about the UK housing crisis) Shelter have organised a super-cool exhibition of work by artists, designers and architects – and Ella is one of the big names.

‘[Homelessness] is such a poignant cause, and so now’, Ella told me. ‘And it’s all the more humbling because it is happening during London Design Festival, the week when we celebrate design, houses and the interior. I think it should act as a rain check [for the industry]. It’s great that we are able to produce beautiful designs, but it shouldn’t be at the cost of others.’ Well said.

And this isn’t any ordinary exhibition, either. Oh no. The folks at Shelter have done something a little different. To fit with their theme, they’ve invited contributors to create works of art based on different cards from the pack. Ella’s 3 of Diamonds pillow (above) is based on the ‘concept of having shelter and somewhere to rest your head’.

Other famous creatives getting involved include Damien Hirst, Alexander McQueen, Rankin, Vivienne Westwood, David Bailey, Sophie Conran and Sir Terence Conran and Henry Holland.

Quite an impressive line-up, wouldn’t you say? And guess who has the inside track on whose creating what?

A little birdie told me yesterday that Henry Holland has designed the Four of Diamonds as a dress, Sophie Conran has represented the Four of Spades using hand pressed paper with pressed leaves, and Sir Terence Conran has created the Ten of Spades as a self-portrait.

The full deck will be on display from the 24-28 September at the Haunch of Venison Gallery. Get down there and check it out.

Image credit: Martin Parr and Magnum (left) and Peter-McDonald (right)

But that’s not all that Ella is getting up to with Shelter. She has also invited numerous designers, artists and illustrators to design placemats for her aptly named ‘There’s no place like home‘ exhibition and auction. The exhibition will be held at her shop in Chesire street from 19 September – 3 October and launches with a tea party!

When I spoke to Ella, she was getting rather exctied about the imminent event: ‘It’s definitely going to have the wow factor. We’ve got so many artists contributing designs we’ve gutted our small shop to fit them all in! We want the way we exhibit the work to be as impressive as the pieces themselves’. She also revealed that her favourite designs from the collection are by Martin Parr and Peter McDonald (above).

Ella’s own photographic placemats are just as beautiful. My favourite are the Sunlight Through Leaves set – firmly on my wish list.

A silent auction will be held throughout the exhibition to sell the placemats, and all proceeds will go to Shelter. Why not head down and place a bid? Purchases that contribute to charity are fully justifiable in my eyes!

Three cheers for Shelter, Ella and art with heart.

August 23, 2009

Back home— Yellow Brick Road

There’s no Place Like Home

Where the three teenagers are, follow the yellow brick road, you find munchkins? I find teens in need of jobs, college classes, a life, a zip code

It is so nice to be home, we went to the nursery on the way home because we haven’t gardened for so long and we couldn’t stand it. Our Portland friends were so wonderful last night. We went to Montage under the railroad tracks and had oyster shooters and pan fried catfish, and then stopped at Rimsky Korsa Koffee, this great dessert place in Portland and then Steph wanted to go to another dessert place, and off we went to Pix. I don’t know of any dessert places in Los Angeles at all, and here there were cool little choices. It was one of those weird nights. Steph and I were discussing men. The men were trying to figure out how to start their own religion. I was drinking grappa.

We got a few plants, a few seeds, we got breakfast. We came home to unpack, to do laundry, to spend time with our dog, to be with our own space. And I needed to see my own house, my own plants so much, and the dog, and my poems there unrevised where I left them. My lawn was dry, but the mint and the oregano are growing well. Your own home is where you should want to come back to, I do. You just follow the yellow brick road. At the end, for us, there are teenagers. They are here at the house, our son, and the two kids he moved in with us because they had no place to go. His girlfriend and his friend. They’re good kids too, and they don’t eat too much. Sometimes at the end of the yellow brick road there are munchkins, sometimes there are teenagers with long hair. Welcome home. I’m glad to be back in Los Angeles. My chickens are laying eggs.

This is a picture I took in Portland, I think my friend Lisa needs to come clean with me about whether she has a second home in Portland, this looks like her kind of house.

I mentioned in the previous post we’ve been having storms here in Perth, but really the word ’storm’ doesn’t do it justice. It’s been more like a series of typhoons, cyclones and hurricanes all rolled up into one. Most days it’s wet and windy, and there isn’t a long enough break between the rain to even take the dog to the park. I did try yesterday, but I had to flatten myself around a tree trunk as soon as I got there, and then wait for the horizontal rain to give up and go away.

The stupid thing was I had looked at both my raincoat and umbrella on the way out the door, and decided, that with the sun shining directly above the house and the nearest dangerous looking cloud out on the horizon, I’d go without. Apparently a rain cloud can cover ground a lot faster than I can.

So this is my 3rd winter in Perth, and without wanting to sound like a whinging Pom, they are definitely getting worse. I don’t know whether it’s global warming that’s causing weather patterns to shift around, but the climate and seasons are refusing to stick to the guidelines. Australian summers are getting hotter and drier, winters are getting windier and wetter, and the Gods of Thunder and Lightening are definitely way out of control.

The first of the big storms came a few weeks ago. A Monday to be precise, the day that my son’s tonsils were due to go under the chopping block. Instead, I was staggering around the house losing my breakfast to gastric flu, my daughter was in bed, busy retching into a bucket and emitting a series of very dramatic moans and groans, and my husband had just flown to Sydney on business.

Setting off to collect my son from nursery, I lowered myself carefully into the car (fast movements are not nausea’s best friend) and went to open the garage door. It went up half way. It came back down again. I pushed the button again. It went up a quarter of the way. It came back down again. Now of course common sense should have told me not to push my luck for a third time. But I did. It was cold, wet, dark and blowing a gale. There wasn’t a chance in hell I was going to walk to the nursery to collect him.

So I pushed the button. Once again it went up half way – and then stopped. This would have been bad enough on its own, but of course I’m not that lucky. A massive gust of wind then swept up the driveway catching the garage door on the way, it snapped it off the rollers and then buckled it in half. The twisted hunk of metal than dropped back down – to within an inch of the cars roof, with me in it.

Now I don’t want to come across as a useless, blubbering woman who falls apart in times of trouble, but this really was the very last straw in an incredibly long day involving a high temperature and a toilet bowl. I did attempt to use my very limited strength to push the door back up to an upright position, but unsurprisingly, the door had other ideas. So with the metal rippling away in the wind next to me, I called a friend and sobbed out my tale of woe.

Lucky for me she saved the day, collecting stranded son and sending round further reinforcements, in the form of her husband who helped me to tether the door up with ropes. That night I laid in bed listening to it banging away and imaging how much damage it would potentially cause if it broke free and took off the roof of the house across the road.

3 weeks on and the storms have returned to try and finish off the garage door, which is still roped up and wedged shut with ladders. Trees in the garden are bending like blades of grass and rubbish bins are flying up and down the street like tumbleweed. I feel like Dorothy, minus the safety blanket of a pair of sparkly red shoes.

So the other night my husband came in from work and shut the door. An hour later the wind picked up and blew it back open again. Every other door in the house slammed shut, the roof hatch disappeared up into the eaves and all of the AC covers in the ceilings went with them. Trying to shut the front door again was the tricky bit. With a cyclone now picking up pace by the door mat, the front of the house had turned into something of a wind tunnel, and we couldn’t get the hall door open to get out there. I half expected the front of the house to take off into the night sky, leaving us hanging onto a door handle below.

The two off us finally pushed the door open and slammed the front door shut, but not before the length of the hallway was covered in hailstones and the coats on the hall stand had all had a wash.

“And that is why I always lock the door when I shut it” I said.

With no sign of this bad weather letting up anytime soon, you have to wonder whether Mother Nature has a real axe to grind with this part of the world. Perhaps she’s ticked off with some Aussie half wit calling her a Sheila, or maybe she’s just having a shocking case of PMT. Either way, until we lower the excess on our insurance I wish she’d air some of her grievances elsewhere and give our badly built house a break.

.
Oggi vi presento Nicola Verlato, artista italiano.

Mothers II

It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged. Haha..am a lazy bum! Finally found time to update this blog as I’m hospitalised for abnormal low blood pressure. Guess it’s taking a toll on me as I’ve recently started schooling again. Yes! School’s in! Work has been extremely hectic with all that training and stuff while serving my last month notice. Was kinda hard to decide to go as I really had a great time with my colleagues and especially when new and exciting projects are finally embarking from my hard work! But I guess, you gotta relook into life little schedules. I had to make painful decisions as I don’t think I can compromise with time for school. Anyway, am looking forward to new job especially when my new boss was my old boss! Heehee… he is finally is back in Singapore. And I know he is still the best I have ever worked for and especially when he is also fully supportive of me back to studying.

New Job, New House, New Education,Same Loving Husband.

Went around looking for furnitures and also fixtures for the house. Yes, finally confirmed the layout. Had a tough time weighing the different kind of color, theme, and textures. Especially tough when there are TWO person with equally strong connotations of what home is!

Eric is all about raw, loft, neutral tones..

Daisy is all about quirky, quintessential, bright flamboyant colors…

Talk about clash of the titans. I guess we have kinda subdued e demons in ourselves to accept each other’s opinion. The only interesting part is that our house will have a very unique theme. Thinking in terms of dualisms is common in our cognitive culture.. hahaha..but in a more positive way. We will have corners of our house that speaks in our language. There are Daisy’s corner, Eric’corner coming together as one. Not the karung guni kind of style though!

I bought a Thomas Chippendale inspired 3seater sofa with 2 armchairs, in bright fuchsia pink! The sofa maintains each of the striking characteristics of the 18th century sofa that inspired it; a gracefully shaped back, uninterrupted seat cushion, simple stretchers, and traditional carved block legs.Am totally on the look out for bright green/blue/purple cushions to match it, in elegant attenuated neo-Classicism towards the eclectic tastes of the Regency…hmm…

Gave this away To this new style

Eric’s got his favourite solid wood 4 poster bed (aka a tradition of the Royal Bedstead) and a wonderful Comfortable mattress from Australia. The shop’s boss (Kiwi) has a diploma in sleep and bedding certified in New Zealand ! A four poster bed originates as far as the 16th century. It is a bed with 4 vertical columns, (antique kind has a board of wood like a cover). This function was used for keeping draughts. In the medieval times, beds where meant for kings and the royal family only! Anyway, the new kinds are simply kept to its minimum without the board to retain the aesthetic look. What we have the the simplest form. Looks more balinese some would say! We’ve got a very thick mattress, with double layer for its extreme plushness to complement the bed. I’m a sucker for comfort! After all, we spent 1/3 of our life on it! For me, prob 1/2!

Wish I could find this though!

Till date,

Purchased:

Around 11:30 today, my friend and fellow mommy, Allison, picked me up for some baby free mommy time! We had a blast. The funny thing is, we can’t seem to actually get AWAY from babies. We talk about baby stuff, we shop in the baby parts of whatever store we go into. We just cannot get away. I said we need to learn how to talk about things OTHER than the 3 P’s of babies: Pee, Poop, and Puke. I am sure there are many other gross P words in dealing with babies too, oh like PEAS. Ok, nastiness. I am not a big fan of peas anyway, so pureed peas? YUCK, I don’t blame Katie for not liking them super well. OOh, another p word, although this one is more for the mom’s. Pooch. yup. I am back to my prepregnancy weight, wearing my old clothes, so yes, I am so happy about that, and proud of myself, but there of course is still the flabby area that used to be toned abs muscles (ok SOMEWHAT toned, I guess as women we ALWAYS complain about our pooch!). So, if mommy friends could ever manage to have baby free time WITHOUT talking about babies, I think pigs may be flying as well. So, we laughed about that, alot. We had fun shopping, giggling, and enjoying some lunch. It was very refreshing. I must say though, the best part is coming home! I love “missing” Katie. I realize that having those baby free moments are what make me appreciate her that much more when I am with her. We actually just woke up from taking a nap together. It was quite special. So, this saying, There’s No Place like Home, isn’t just true for Dorothy, although I wouldn’t mind the sparkly ruby slippers, but for real, as a mom, when will I EVER get that dressed up again. . .ok anyway, so it isn’t just true for her, but for me (and I am guessing other mommies) as well!

Oh, and I love my hubby so much too! You are awesome and I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to have those baby free moments! Even if Katie doesn’t eat quite as well for you. . .sorry about baby food splatter on you! hehe. Katie and I both love you BUNCHES!

Finally uploaded our floor plan! It excludes the patio and backyard. Not doing justice to the actual place i guess.,.I promise to upload what hubby has drawn according to scale. His drawing is much clearer compared to this..

THE Government generally lets leases for residential (landed) homes expire without extension, said the Singapore Land Authority (SLA). There has been no renewal or top-up of residential (landed) leases in the last five years. Said an SLA spokesman: ‘For selected cases, the lease may be extended if the proposed use and tenure are aligned with the Government’s planning intention.’ The Government generally sells land on leasehold so as to allow flexibility in re-allocating land to meet socio-economic needs. (From Electric Newpaper)

Guess we will have to be prepared of what we are getting ourselves into. The risks you would have to consider. Afterall, we are living on borrowed land.

Hee.. finally uploaded with Whizz kid Boon’s help!

Dunno how many years I will take to upload without him! haha… finally got it done. Hubby did this layout for me to be able to visualize better. Hubby did this over the weekend on Sketchup which is pretty easy to use.(For him I guess! ) Its a popular software used for various kinds of presentation of ideas, very much for commercial uses. Can’t imagine his waterpark theme for the king on this.

Anyway its just a rough idea how we might roll the layout on the house. Yes! Its a house. heehee… I’ll save another 10 years to build a swimming pool. Joe told me to swim at the drain. Damn… some brother.

Was talking to Ravi today and got him excited about the place. Hopefully he will sell his place and be my neighbour too! I’ll probably bring him down this sat to view some units that is still selling. He will definitely love the place! But compared to his current place at Toa Payoh, its less accessible and more inconvenience to getting stuff. Nevertheless, I can cross the overhead bridge behind my hse and go to his place. Haha… save petrol and time i feel. And burn some calories too… hahaha…

Brought Boon down to view the vicinity. Blur me. I have brought everyone down except him. Met Boon for dinner and realised that he has absolutely no idea where we are moving to. I thought I had drove down with him to see the neighbourhood before. Gosh… God knows who I brought before. hahaha… Glad he like the place as much as we do. Eyes were beaming when we kept talking in the car about how we can BBQ at our place, play mahjong all night long and how to grow mango tree through mango tree.

He is so fast. Mailed me the site on air-layering. Another new technique for marcotting. I only remembered marcotting classes in primary school! He shall be my official gardener. At least he has good track record from growing the plant from the mango which we plucked at Joe’s place has grown shoots! Hope his longan tree bear fruits soon.

Joe is letting me marcot his mango tree. yay! SO by the time I get my keys, it should be a little plant by then.

Hubby has created a 3-D layout of our new nest!Tried to upload but somehow, it didnt show. Im gonna need more time learning how to use this.

After a fun, but long weekend I have returned home. It was a good weekend, a weekend of discovery. For instance, I learned that:

Gator tail = Delicious

Fried Pickles = Delicious

Regular Pickles = Still Gross

Laser Tag = More awesome than I remember

A Nasty Stripper = A finger warmer for Roy. (NO I will not elaborate)

While a weekend away with the guys was a lot of fun, I’m glad to be back. I have a shit ton of homework to do and I’ve missed Lauren terribly. Also, its nice to not have to worry about waking up with sharpie marker all over my backside.

Update: My good buddy Turney pointed out an error I made:

Nasty Stripper = Stripper GLOVE for Roy. (Nope. Still not going to elaborate. Though by now if you haven’t got it, you don’t need to get it.)
