UPDATED: The stunning video for the song has been released to YouTube.

I thought there were a pair of comparable albums to come out of the post-Klaxons beats+thrashy guitars+searing synths movement. The first, released in 2007, was These New Puritans’ Beat Pyramid; the second, Late Of The Pier’s Fantasy Black Channel, exhumed from some twisted nightmarish grave in 2008. For me, Beat Pyramid was the superior beast, displaying a lot less cheese, an attempt to tackle disparate conspiracist topics like numerology and doppelgängers, and generally coming across like the work of artists with a little more focus and sensibility. Fantasy Black Channel was more messy and sprawling and clumsy, while Beat Pyramid tried out some interesting conceptual manœuvres (refrains, lyrical and music themes that re-surfaced elsewhere on the album, intra-album remixing) that they pulled off with some aplomb.

And so I’m rather glad that These New Puritans are back, this time wielding a seven-minute-plusn single called “We Want War”, which precedes the 2010 release of Hidden, their sophomore album. “We Want War” is undoubtedly a more ambitious and high-budget affair, boasting woodwind arrangements, choirs, and the actual sounds of warfare. It’s also lost some of the DIY charm of the band’s previous work – where before they had beats that sound like they’d been punched in the chest and run over by an articulated lorry, this new material rides in on suspiciously crisp taiko drumming. Though the tone is supposed to be foreboding and doom-laden, it’s actually much less harrowing and brutal than songs like “Infinity ytinifni”.

For all that, it’s still a storming track, boasting several interstitial sequences, and a combination of samples and loops and kitchen sinks that thrills and astonishes me. They’re clearly a band of wild ambition and excess, but key to “We Want War”’s appeal is that it reins in any really extraneous excess, and we end up with a long, long song, that doesn’t outstay its welcome. Expect Hidden to be a less unkempt album, but certainly no less indicative of the band’s manifold talents and experiments.

What a wonderful bus ride! And it all started from leaving college early. Truancy pays kids.

Sometimes missing the bus is a good thing, it lead me to meet an amazing person at the bus stop. There I was standing awkwardly making sure not to make eye contact with the others waiting. I have so many barriers, like music blasting in my ears, as a way of distancing myself with fellow riders. However today a woman asked me where the bus went and if she could get where she needed to be in an quicker and easier. It’s pretty impossible to get anywhere without taking two buses in N-town as the buses are so ridiculous.

She asked me what subjects I do, philosophy made her recall her brother who taught philosophy and translated German at Oxford. She is reading Shaupenhaur and I am reading Nietzsche and we discussed both philosophers as well as Kant. Our conversation went from existence to morality, and also from Nietzsche’s bitchiness to Shaupenhaur bleak and depressing outlook . She gave me the name of her brother, James Urmson, so I googled it and found this book. The reviews look amazing and he appears to really know his stuff about Aristotle. It’s a real shame that he now has alzheimer, fortunately he still can translate German and he keeps his mind active.

I think that this expirence was well worth skipping history, but I promise not to do it again.

I am definitely loving These New Puritans again. There mix of about 100 different genre’s, simple/cryptic lyrics, sickk beats and repeating samples loops throughout Beat Pyramid which made probably my favourite album of 2007. Some of it’s nonsense some if it is genius but it is certainly is well worth a spotify. Also their sophomore alum “Hidden” is set for release on January 18th 2010. Arcording to there web site the album will include “foley recording techniques (including a melon with cream crackers attached struck by a hammer, used to simulate the sound of a human head being smashed.)” Sound brilliant, and here is the wonderful video to “Elvis”

I remember seeing TNP supporting The Horrors and Crystal Castle at London Astoria R.I.P. on Febuary 16th 2008. I took this picture of the lead singer. I love the chain mail thing.

Pierwszy dzień występów zakończy zaś angielskie These New Puritans.

These New Puritans, źródło http://2009.off-festival.pl

Przesłuchałem już kilku artystów i zdecydowanie najbardziej przypadli mi Anglicy z These New Puritans.

To chyba powód do dumy?

Trochę gitary, dużo perkusji, odrobina syntezatora, ciut trąbki i mamy energiczne kawałki do poskakania, posłuchania. Jest u nich taka świeżość. Zaciekawili mnie. Po raz pierwszy usłyszałem ich w radiu. Było to Swords of Truth.

Z tekstami to różnie. Raz robi wyliczankę niczym Kazik objaśniając każdą cyfrę innym razem nie potrafi znaleźć odpowiednich słów w największym hiciebandu “Elvis”. Dzięki takim utworom można sądzić, że Elvis żyje. Energiczny indie-punk-rock z elementami popu.

Ocena: 7/10.

Também “..ce I Will Say This Twice” e “I Will Say This Twi…” que são duas faixas separadas porém que se completam (só ouvindo pra entender)

Although this time last year I relented to the whole end-of-year list thing, through a combination of laziness and principle I’ve decided to retire from that and instead focus on more practical list-making (e.g. “Top 5 Ways To Thread The Shoelaces Of My Work Shoes” or “Top 10 Items I Discovered In My Stool This Morning”). This is not to say I don’t very much enjoy trawling the various End Of Year Best Ofs that populate the interwebosphere every January – they are a great source of new listening inspiration, and can be a useful nudge in finally going ahead and procuring that ‘buzz’ album that you’ve been meaning to check out but haven’t yet got around to (but no, that Bon Iver chappie is not for me). Particularly those lists that attempt to add a little bit of context as to why a particular recording is worthy of attention, as opposed to those un-annotated lists which I myself was guilty of. This is one I like, or this… (and for group-compiled, consensus-based lists you could do worse that check this one out).

But this does not mean I’m above trying to foist my questionable tastes on others…

Each year I make myself a “Best Of…” compilation, trying to encapsulate the best of that year’s listening (and live) experiences over the course of a couple of mastered CDs. And so in a rare act of magnanimous generosity, I’m making that compilation available here for your listening pleasure.

My original intent was to finish this by the end of January, so I’m going to have to speed things up a little. Forgive me if my reviews become a little… impressionistic from here on out.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – Real Emotional Trash
One of the problems I have with iTunes and iPod technology is that it’s kind of a pain in the ass to maintain sort order by last name where it should apply. So I ended up manually moving all of the albums in my master 2008 playlist into alphabetical order, and I missed this one.

Anyway, it’s a Malkmus album. As with all of his solo works, it’s instrumentally tight like the late-period Pavement albums and a little more complex musically. He’s always good for some lyrical twists (“Cold Son”’s infamous ‘Who was it that said, “The world is my oyster?”; I feel like a nympho trapped in a cloister”), and when he keeps things short and tuneful like on “Gardenia,” a ringer for recent Thin Lizzy-influenced Belle and Sebastian, it’s great. But he seems to be testing the improvisational waters he last hit hard on Pavement’s Wowee Zowee. This may have something to do with the new Janet Weiss-enhanced Jicks, but Malkmus isn’t exactly Neil Young or Richard Thompson. I don’t need the solos and instrumental sections. Give us the songs.

Sun Kil Moon – April
I do this Music Marathon every year to force myself to come to conclusions about the music I listen to. In my experience, the ability to do so, not the size of one’s music collection, number of concerts attended, or ability to play an instrument, is what separates music enthusiasts from casual music listeners. As an enthusiast of something, you should have some aesthetic concerns. Certainly not a strictly parameterized code (“if there’s a drum machine, it’s not for me!” or “only songs under 3 minutes, please!”), but the ability to think through your taste and present some arguments for or against something.

So it’s frustrating when I have to write about an album like April. April’s inarguably similar to Sun Kil Moon’s last collection of original compositions, the hauntingly beautiful Ghosts of the Great Highway. But despite the great similarity, April feels like a pretty big misstep. Something’s wrong with the pacing, the song lengths… I’m not sure. Basically something’s wrong with something. It works great as background music, but Mark Kozelek can be and has been better than that (such as on Ghosts and on The Red House Painters’ Songs for a Blue Guitar). April’s high point, “Tonight in Bilbao,” adds to the mystery for me. It’s a great song, but not fundamentally different than some of the others on here. I have no idea why I like it, but feel pretty ambivalent about so much of April. Even more perplexingly, it’s a 9 1/2 minute song near the end of a very long (unnecessary long – maybe that’s one issue) album that mostly doesn’t do much but just sit there for me. I have no idea why this is the one that sticks.

So I’ll admit to failure. I have no idea what to make of my gut reaction to April.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band With Choir – 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons
An organic, orchestral-traditional rock setup hybrid bashing out lengthy, dramatic compositions. Sounds good, right? It isn’t. It’s a monotonous bore augmented with doubled (infrequently harmonized) so-serious vocals. They get the dynamics right and practically nothing else.

These New Puritans – Beat Pyramid
SPEAKING OF BANDS BROUGHT DOWN MOSTLY BY ANNOYING VOCALS. THESE NEW PURITANS ARE CLEARLY INDEBTED ENTIRELY TO LATE-70S POST-PUNK BANDS LIKE GANG OF FOUR. JOY DIVISION. AND, ALL TOO CLEARLY, THE FALL. IN FACT, LIKE MARK E. SMITH, JACK BARNETT INTONES EVERY PHRASE AS A MATTER OF SUCH GRAVE IMPORTANCE THAT HE SEEMS TO THINK IT WOULD DO IT A DISSERVICE TO JUST SING IT. HERE ARE SOME SAMPLE LYRICS:

What’s your favourite number?
What does it mean?

Number 1 is the indvidual
Number 2 – duality
Number 3, … numerology is all shit
Number 4 is the number that runs through this music

DOES IT LOOK LIKE THEY REQUIRE SUCH GRAVITY?

Tokyo Police Club - Elephant Shell
Not much more than a fun guitar-pop album, but after Thee Silver Mt. Zion and These New Puritans, it was like manna.

Torche – Meanderthal
And things got even better from there, because Meanderthal is like getting tackled by a big load of awesome. Ostensibly metal in that the guitar sound tends toward the thick and heavy, Torche has such a propensity toward hooks that they veer just as much toward guitar-centric late 90s rock like Far or a less angst-ridden Deftones. In fact, if it weren’t for their apparent volume or propensity for touring with bands like Isis, Jesu, and The Sword, the metal label would almost seem sort of ludicrous – these guys could reasonably tour with the Foo Fighters, and it wouldn’t be that weird a fit.

But it’s that heavy sound that keeps things interesting – it’s envigorating to hear those massive guitars essay the perfect pop hooks of “Across the Shields,” and to hear what sounds a little like Sonic Youth’s “Mote” jacked-up a few notches in volume and tempo in “Healer.” Even more to Torche’s credit, they keep the songs remarkably short and direct for such – few break three minutes. Typically, I have enough room in my heart for maybe one or two metal (or “arguably metal” or “heavy music” or whatever we’re calling it) albums a year, so folks who might not normally be interested in this sort of thing, take note: Meanderthal is worth your time.

TV on the Radio – Dear Science
And the upward swing continued with the reliable-as-usual TV on the Radio. I’m not quite as hot on this album as others seem to be – I don’t think it’s the be-all, end-all of the band. The opener, “Halfway Home” sports a general groove that promises a successor to their greatest moment, “Wolf Like Me,” but it feels hollow; single “Golden Age” is a little limp whenever it veers too far from its estimable chorus; and the album just generally goes for well-oiled consistency rather than staggeringly unusual stand-outs, quite a change from the last two albums, which were inconsistent, but had obvious stand-outs, like the driving “Wolf,” the stuttering groove-and-noise experiment “I Was A Lover,” and the a capella “Ambulance”.

But, even as it clings pretty closely to a distinctive style of electrified dance rock, Dear Science is hard to dispute as high quality work, and it expands admirably on the band’s prior work. While “Stork and Owl” is in the mold of Return to Cookie Mountain’s mid-tempo songs, it’s livened up with some plucked string parts and a lovely melody. “Family Tree” may be one of the band’s prettiest songs to date, all lush orchestral padding, piano and harmony vocals. The two up-tempo standouts, “Dancing Choose” and “Red Dress” drive forth with all instruments a-blazing – the horn section (a welcome addition to their sound) does battle with the sharp rhythmic turns we’ve come to expect from the band, and outdoes them at their own game, blurting and overwhelming as they go. And, above it all, hover Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone, who have never sounded better than they do on this album – the falsettos and harmonies never threaten to go out of tune as they occasionally did in the past.

I realize I’m not doing much to rock the boat here.

Who in the music community did not get the memo when it came to their “albums of the year” lists”? Thalia Zedeck produced a corker and it has been hopelessly overlooked by many in the view of this ignoble and dastardly site! Anyway, when we are not otherwise occupied by taking food from the hands of starving orphans or abandoning dotty old ladies midway across busy roads, we do like to occasionally right the odd wrong. So get busy listening to Liars and Prayers if you have missed out on it so far!

In other news, Scotland’s Sons & Daughters produced a somewhat overproduced but generally likeable album in The Gift, while old stagers Stereolab and Stephen Malkmus were also on hand with solid offerings. They may be of less familiarity to you, but be sure to give Sylvie, Tall Firs, and Tim Gilbertson a listen also, if you generally enjoy the music that we write about. Indeed, all you need do is follow the yellow-brick link!

20) Of Montreal – Skeletal Lumping

Glasvegas – “Geraldine”

16) The Fall – Imperial Wax Solvent

Outro grande momento desta instituição chamada Mark E. Smith.

The Fall – “50 Year Old Man”

15) Jamie Lidell – Jim

13) These New Puritans – Beat Pyramid

These New Puritans (formed in 2006) are a four-piece band from Southend-on-Sea, United Kingdom, consisting of Jack Barnett (vocals, guitar, computer, sound), his twin brother George Barnett (drums, tapes, percussion), Tomas Hein (bass guitar, sampler, backing vocals, percussion) and Sophie Sleigh-Johnson (synthesizers). They mix indie with samplers and electronic experimental sounds.

These New Puritans were commissioned by Hedi Slimane to compose the soundtrack for the 2007 Dior Homme show. The band’s debut album “Beat Pyramid” was released in the UK in January 2008.

During the week, two of us old codgers were imbibing a copious amount of alcohol and debating the current state of British popular music. I have been railing against the current scene for some time, but my friend has remained a staunch supporter of it. It is generally a good dispute that usually results in a happy barman, if nothing else. However, it would seem that even my friend is beginning to despair at the never-ending conveyor belt of dreadful dross that is being spat out right now. Dark days have, indeed, come upon us!

Anyway, here is a mixtape of some of the names that we were bandying about – and nary a sign of the sickening six that are Coldplay, Keane, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Fratellis, and Kooks to be had, let me assure you! A touch derivative in places, I will admit, but see what you think of it by listening here.

Moreover, with many of you heading out to parties this weather, the emphasis is on up-tempo tunes designed to get your feet moving! So do not say that we do nothing for you around here… even if we don’t really!

Here is the track listing on the tape:

1. Atom – British Sea Power

2. Terra Firma – The Young Knives

3. Colours – These New Puritans

4. Knots – Pete and the Pirates

5. Casualty – Look See Proof

6. Guilt – The Long Blondes

7. Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants – Wild Beasts

8. Alarm Clock – The Rumble Strips

9. Gilt Complex – Sons & Daughters

Unpredictable British rockers These New Puritans have made it on every preliminary list we compile for the section The Five that runs in every issue of 20 Watts. For some reason, though, they’ve never made it into the magazine, so I thought I’d give this strange, addictive group a shout-out on the blog. I can’t stop listening to “Elvis,” the hypnotic electro-garage single from their debut album Beat Pyramid (released last March). I’m not quite sure how I feel about the rest of the album – some of the tracks are a little too relentless in their constant loop of sounds ranging from digital blips to loud, clanging…somethings – but it may grow on me. Seriously, though, check the supremely creepy music video for “Elvis.” It’s weird, but I guarantee you’ll be singing it in your sleep.
