Change the world

Let me start this out by letting everyone know that I enjoy Michael Jackson’s music. He is, without a doubt, the greatest entertainer of this, and many, many generations. Even though his music and performance style is contradictory to the style of music I generally prefer, I still am able to enjoy his music. I am not a Michael Jackson apologist though. I do not think that he was right to do most of the stuff he did and found him to be a generally weird individual that would have benefited from psychiatric evaluation. I also think that he was, in fact, a liberal, but only because of preconceived notions and he never really thought about it. I will show some examples of conservative themes in Michael’s songs.

In the song “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” from the iconic “Thriller” album had the line, “if you can’t feed a baby, don’t have a baby”. This is an undeniable conservative principle of self-responsibility. It is a simple common-sense solution that escapes liberals. They would tell you that it is alright to have a baby when you can’t afford to feed it because the government would help you take care of it. Creating a sense of entitlement and have them completely dependent on the government. Whenever conservatives in Washington try to stop this eternal loop of dependency, liberals cry foul charging Conservatives with not caring about children. Nothing could be further from the truth, but liberals never let the facts get in the way of a good campaign slogan. Conservatives believe that you should wait until you are financially and emotionally ready to have a child. It is better for the child and the parents. Apparently, so does Michael Jackson.

I don’t think anyone can deny the overarching conservative ideals set forth in Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror“. “Change starts with the man in the mirror” is about as conservative as it gets. Not relying on other people, or waiting for the endless bureaucracy of the federal government. If you want something to happen, do it yourself. The ultimate in personal responsibility. We saw this come to fruition with the Tax Day Tea Parties and the 9/12 march on Washington. These were citizens disgruntled with the way things were going on in Washington so they took it upon themselves to do something about it because “change starts with the man in the mirror”, it does not start with the failed ideals of the liberal movement.

Lastly, Michael Jackson shows his utter contempt with government in his song “They Don’t Care About Us“. In the song he describes how the government has failed to stop racism and brutality of African-Americans. Equality does not exist. The only way to stop the terrible chain is to change the hearts and minds of those who still harbor feelings of fear and resentment towards African-Americans. This must be done through human nature. Liberals tried to force the issue with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but you cannot change people’s hearts through legislation no matter how good-natured the legislation is. 45 years later, there still exists attitudes of racism and fear for people which, Jackson correctly asserts, that the government has failed to stop, simply because Government, no matter how well-intentioned it is, cannot change people’s minds or opinions, only people can.

Jackson understood that the government was there to provide necessary services, but could not be relied on to solve all the ills of the world. If the ils of the world were to be solved, the human race, working without the government, would be the key to change. Michael Jackson believed, as conservatives do, the empowering individuals is more powerful than laws and regulation that have only proved to beat down individuals under the guise of  “the greater good”. It’s been over 40 years since President  Lyndon B. Johnson declared “War on Poverty”. We’re still fighting and we will fight that war in perpetuity because liberals love it when people are dependent on the Government. They should take a lesson from Michael Jackson and explore personal responsibility.

When Michael Jackson passed away earlier this year, the media left us with a vivid impression of his final days as a hollowed-out husk of a man, a drug-addled paranoid freak drowning in bankruptcy and depression. As someone who grew up loving his music and admiring the dance skills that I would certainly never have, it pained me to see an icon and unparalleled talent like Jackson having wasted away. Thank goodness for This Is It, a touching, heartfelt, and exciting concert documentary that shows the side of Jackson the media never liked to portray—the hard-working perfectionist superstar who even at the age of 50 could sing beautifully and hold his own in a dance routine.

The documentary begins with a series of interviews with several dancers moved to tears at the opportunity they’ve been presented with—a chance to dance backup for Michael Jackson in his upcoming London comeback concerts. While this seems like a cloying way to garner sympathy for the controversial icon at the heart of the film, it’s a comforting reminder that outside of all of the scandal and strange behavior, there were still people in this world who saw and were inspired by the talent. At first, I felt pity for the missed opportunity to live out their dream and perform with Jackson on stage in front of the screaming crowds, but as the film progressed, I realized the rehearsal process and the interaction with the man was more than enough to make this the high point of all of their careers.

In the rehearsal process, Jackson is shown to be a perfectionist, often stopping numbers if they are not done to his satisfaction, and running songs again and again until the tempo, pitch, and instrumentation sound just right. This starkly contrasted with what I remember watching on CNN, where folks said he was so thin and drugged out that he could barely do anything. Not only was he not nearly as thin as folks claimed, but he was working hard throughout all of this rehearsal footage. If someone was slowly dying and wasting away, would they want to do grueling song and dance routines multiple times, more than necessary, just to make a great number even greater? The only perceived weakness he displays in the film—the occasional comment or two about saving his voice, including one after he does some spectacular vocal trills to end the duet I Just Can’t Stop Loving You—is a common concern amongst stars preparing for big concerts.

Despite the perfectionism, Jackson never comes off as a diva either. Without question, he pushes his musicians and dancers to the limit, stopping them when they’re wrong and dispensing constructive criticism freely. None of the musicians ever openly gripe about the issues Jackson takes with their work—on the contrary, they seem grateful, saying that Jackson is the most hands-on star they’ve ever worked with, and usually the bigger the star gets, the less they display that same detail-oriented state of mind. An interesting supporting character throughout the film is concert director (and film director) Kenny Ortega, who at first appears to be somewhat of a sycophant, coming just short of kissing up to Jackson… yet upon further thought, how else is one supposed to direct the show of a perfectionist superstar? He tells you what he wants and you are there to make that vision a reality, so why wouldn’t you ask him what he wants and whether everything is good enough for him after every number? Besides, Jackson is clearly his own toughest critic judging from the film, so Ortega piling on his ideas and trying to shape the show would be counterintuitive. It’s Michael’s show, and you’re the figurehead, so make everything happen the way Michael wants it, and Ortega seems to handle that situation perfectly, both placating to the icon while making sure the icon looks his best.

Finally, there’s the music. While Jackson’s trademark has always been his dancing, he shows off the vocals in a big way here. There’s a sweetness to the quality of his voice on songs like Human Nature and the slowed down version of The Way You Make Me Feel that he performs on stage here that brought tears to my eyes. The opening number, Wanna Be Startin Somethin, also made me misty, since that’s long been perhaps my favorite MJ number, and Jackson doesn’t skimp on performing the hits that everyone wants to hear. The usual bombast that one would expect in a Michael Jackson concert is all present as well, and while a couple of the numbers verge on over-the-top schmaltz (a background video about saving the rainforest during Earth Song, for example), and the format may bore those who aren’t enraptured by Jackson’s music, I found myself captivated at the concert that could have been. It’s not the most insightful film, and it’s not the most expertly filmed, but then again, it was never meant to be an expertly filmed and insightful documentary– it was meant to be DVD extras and private video library archival footage. Instead, it becomes something of comfort food for Jackson fans: after hearing about Jackson being a freak for what seems like forever, here is a fun, soothing, and energetic reminder of the hardworking perfectionist of a legend that we all loved. It’s sad to say this is it, but at least it’s a good one to go out on.

Today I went to the cinema and saw the documentary film MJ-TII. I had been wanting to see it for a while after reading in reviews how good it was. I have to say though that while I enjoyed it, it was not really what I thought it was going to be. For those who maybe haven’t heard of it before, the film pulls together all the rehearsal footage captured from Michael Jackson’s final 50 date concert tour, ‘This Is It’. Even for a music documentary I had been expecting more interviews, and there were none. Especially as it says that’s what’s coming up in the opening blurb. The film really just gives a taste of what fans could have expected from the concert had Jackson lived to perform it. While undoubtedly a talented singer and dancer I was hoping to see many more interviews, perhaps some retrospective ones too, but the only time there was someone talking it lasted for seconds. Because of this, for me, the film got a little tedious in the middle as footage goes from song, to song, to song. The most interesting, I thought, was the segment for ‘Thriller‘. I would say overall that it is worth a look, but probably one look only unless you’re a die hard MJ fan. Not one for the DVD collection, it’s enjoyable but not spectacular. Finally!! I saw it!! OH MY GOD!! This is the best movie ever! Ok it’s not a real “movie” but still…you know what I mean.

It was amazing to see the rehearsals for the concert…this concert would have been the best show ever performed by a human on this planet! The choreographies were amazing, the video sequences unbelievable, the technical and special effects just wow and the dancers hot!! …They put so much sweat into the show!!! The videos they did for “Thriller” and “Smooth Criminal” which would have been shown on big screens:INCREDIBLE!!!

I also liked how the viewer could actually get a better picture of MJ himself. This footage was never meant to be seen by anyone as Michael just wanted to have it for his personal library. So you could actually see the real Michael.

He is funny!! And so … different from what I thought. I never thought that he would have a say in his show but man, he said what he didn’t like right away!I always thought he would be that shy guy who only talked when his management allowed him to.Boy was I wrong! I think it’s very sad that the world only got to know MJ better AFTER he died!

After the movie a friend and I had a little debate if MJ is really dead or if he just faked it. He is somehow convinced MJ is not dead…but I don’t know. He would not do that to his children and family although is death was and still is a bit mysterious. I’ve always loved MJ and as a kid I was even in love with him (hey, that was loooooong ago…some 14 years or so or even longer)…anyways it’s so sad we lost such a great person and musican. He redefined music and dance and he was one of the few who knew what real entertainment is about!! R.I.P.

Es la despedida del Rey del Pop, Michael Jackson.”This is it”, dirigido por Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) es un documental post-mortem sobre los últimos momentos del cantante, durante  los ensayos de la que hubiera sido su última gira en el O2 Arena de Londres, después de 8 años de ausencia. Ha sido un éxito además para Sony Pictures, que se hizo con los derechos por unos 60 millones de dólares. 

Se  puede ver al genio de guante blaco ensayando y mejorando en cada minuto los bailes y música de canciones como “Bad”, “The way you make me feel”, “Beat it”, “Billie Jean” o “They don’t care about us“. Quería que fuera perfecto, que deleitara a sus fans. A pesar de la delgadez que se percibe a lo largo de la película, Michael derrochaba fuerza y baile por cada poro de su piel con sus pasados 50 años. Tenía la misma ilusión que en sus comienzos. Muestra a la persona, un hombre perfeccionista, educado y respetoso hasta cuando algo no le gustaba: ” os lo digo con amor, de verdad” solía decir a los miembros de su equipo. Concienciado con el planeta y la sociedad, intentando  siempre que el mundo se diera cuenta para mejorarlo antes de que fuera demasiado tarde.

El concierto hubiera sido todo un éxito, nuevas coreografías, luces y sonido. Nuevos cortos como “Thriller”(vídeo 13:41) en 3D o apuestas como Smooth Criminal en las que iba a mezclar  imágenes de películas como El sueño eterno y Gilda en el que el cantante interactuaba con Rita Hayworth (video 2:12)  y Humphrey Bogart.

Jackson seguirá siendo el rey, no olvidemos que es el hombre que batió el recod mundial de ventas con su disco “Thriller”. El final del filme con “Man in the mirror”, fue el cierre del último concierto donde Michael manda un mensaje de paz y amor al mundo también en su canción “Heal the world”.

Como si de un mal presagio se tratara, tras su inesperada muerte el pasado 25 de junio de 2009 en Los Ángeles, Michael se despide diciendo al mundo: “This is it” (esto es todo). Murió el icono, nació el mito. Dios te bendiga, Michael.

Tenía ganas de ver en una pantalla gigante los últimos ensayos de Michael Jackson, las cosas como son. Sabía que comprar la correspondiente entrada supondría morder el anzuelo y contribuir así a la solidaria causa de  engrosar más aún las escuálidas arcas de Sony Music —espero que percibáis el sarcasmo en la palabra escrita—, pero no pude resistirme a tan suculento cebo.  Magnífica banda sonora, coreografías imposibles, o mejor dicho, impensables para la mayoría de los mortales, interesante estética de documental… ¡y sólo dos semanas en cartelera!

Pues bien, una vez vista This Is It —que así es como se llama la película—, y a pesar de los pesares que cada cual pudiera enumerar, reconozco que acerté con la elección para sorpresa mía. Como escribía más arriba, la música de la cinta era y es uno de sus grandes alicientes —siendo malvado, otro podría ser el hecho de que MJ no hable demasiado—, una apuesta segura. No fallan los clásicos Beat It, Black or White, Thriller o Billie Jean, que proyectados a lo grande al son de esas magníficas puestas en escena emocionan como si no los hubiéramos oído antes. Pero además había otros  temas que realmente jamás había escuchado y entre ellos uno que nadie lo había hecho pues, como si se tratara de una ranita de las selvas de Papúa-Nueva Guinea, acababa de ser descubierto, en concreto aquel que da nombre al largometraje y cuya historia tal vez contemos en otra ocasión. Y si no la narramos ahora es porque me he tomado la libertad de destacar They Don’t Care About Us. Cruda e imponente, dura y épica, hace gala de un poder de atracción que ata a la butaca.

Publicada en 1995 entre el listado de HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I, la canción es a su vez  un gran ejemplo del porqué de la grandeza del artista en la historia de la música. En ella se funden estilos tan dispares como Hip Hop, Rock y Dance sin que ninguno desentone. Eso en cuanto a su ritmo y energía, donde no hay discusión que valga. Más complicado es el asunto de la letra y de los vídeos promocionales.

La polémica surgió a raíz de los siguientes versos:

La primera palabra, “Jew”, significa “judío” y a partir de ahí se armó el lío porque más adelante también se puede leer “demándame” o “dame una patada”.  O lo que es igual, Michael fue tachado de antisemita: enemigo de la raza hebrea, de su cultura o de su influencia. De hecho, tiempo después los versos de la discordia fueron reescritos. Personalmente no sé si tal animadversión era cierta o dejaba de serlo, pero tampoco creo que los tiros fueran en esa dirección. Me refiero a que en la canción priman por encima de cualquier otro aspecto las alusiones a la segregación, la especulación financiera, las promesas incumplidas de libertad… En definitiva, los poderosos, quienes controlan el mundo, no se preocupan por nosotros —de ahí el título de la canción y esa fotografía repleta de líderes políticos de cierta cumbre del G20 que encabeza este post—.

En fin, que con una letra semejante sólo se podía hacer una clase de videoclip, el de protesta. De manera que a las órdenes del director Spike Lee se grabó y lanzó uno ambientado en una cárcel en la que MJ era un preso más y que denunciaba las violaciones de los Derechos Humanos.

Algunas televisiones no lo vieron tan claro y censuraron el vídeo argumentando en su defensa que contenía demasiada violencia. Pero Spike y Michael lo tenían todo controlado y lo sustituyeron por otro que habían rodado antes. En esta ocasión las barriadas marginales de Rio de Janeiro en Brasil hiceron las veces de escenario y las gentes de aquella realidad fueron los personajes secundarios. Y claro, algunos dirigentes locales pusieron el grito en el cielo: que si se daba una imagen pésima del país, que si el Rey del Pop había pagado a los narcos para que le dejaran hacer su trabajo, etc.

El caso es que fue la primera vez en la carrera de Michael Jackson que publicó dos vídeos para un mismo single. Pero ahí no acaba la historia. El útlimo capítulo se iba a escribir con motivo de los conciertos que el de Indiana preparaba cuando la muerte le sorprendió el pasado verano (Murió Michael Jackson, murió el Rey del Pop). Se habían grabado unas secuencias a base de efectos especiales para acompañar al artista sobre el escenario. También había para They Don’t Care About Us: 1100 soldados al más puro estilo Starship Troopers bailarían con él en el O2 Arena de Londres dando vida a una escena titánica. No pudo ser, pero la película This Is It ha recogido esto que os acabo de describir en su metraje. Con ello pongo punto y final a estas líneas, disfrutadlo porque, como diría Michael, “eso es lo que hay”.

De acordo com a Efe, em São Paulo, em matéria divulgada na Folha Online, centenas de pessoas foram hoje, em Salvador, ao velório do músico Antonio Luis Alves de Souza, o Neguinho do Samba, que morreu no sábado [30.10.2009] por problemas cardíacos e que é considerado o pai do samba-reggae:
