Thierry Henry, jugador del Barcelona nacido en Francia, la semana pasada el jugador Galo fue primera plana en el periódico, Henry cometió un error muy grave tras cometer una doble mano en el partido de vuelta del repechaje al mundial 2010.

Lo peor fue que esa mano injusta saco a Irlanda del próximo mundial, el equipo irlandés reclamo frente a la FIFA reanudar el partido pero ellos no accedieron a eso, donde quedo el llamado Fair Play? .En la basura porque Francia entro al mundial sin repetir el partido de “La mano de Dios”

El Francés Henry minutos finalizado el partido declaro que se había impactado su mano con el balón también dijo que el no era el arbitro para decidir esa acción.

Los Irlandeses después de haber luchado para que reanudaran el partido de vuelta se rindieron y dejaron todo así , porque Thierry Henry no declaro la mano justo en la acción en que la cometió? Por conveniencia?. No se sabe pero todo quedo así , Irlanda injustamente fuera y Francia dentro.

También dicen que el árbitro tuvo algo que ver, porque díganme un Mundial sin Francia lo más conveniente para la FIFA seria con Francia adentro. El Futbol cada día es más injusto y seguira asi .

Voilà une dizaine de jours que je rédigeais un article inhérent à une requête simple: la mise à disposition de conteneurs et bacs poubelle.

Le message est visiblement très bien passé puisque depuis hier, c’est chose faite à proximité de mon immeuble d’habitation.

Et pour l’occasion, ils n’y sont pas allés de main morte, pas moins de 4 gros conteneurs poubelle qui arrivent d’un coup d’un seul, à point nommé. Les riverains ne sont pas habitués à cela, car évidemment ils n’en ont jamais eu à disposition! Ils n’auront que l’embarras du choix, quel conteneur pourront-ils bien choisir pour déposer leurs déchets n’est-ce-pas?

Mais en tout cas, je m’en réjouis pleinement et c’était là tout le sens de ma requête, c’est plus de propreté dans les rues de notre ville et plus de responsabilisation des habitants, les invitant à non plus déposer leurs sacs poubelle sur les trottoirs mais dans les conteneurs prévus à cet effet.

Serge Pugeault se vante constamment de la rapidité de la majorité municipale à entamer la réfection de la Halle du Boulingrin, alors que par le passé ce dossier paraissait au ralenti.

C’est clairement de la mauvaise foi car si Adeline Hazan et son équipe ont eu la possibilité de lancer aussi vite ce dossier, c’est grâce aux travaux d’études réalisés par l’équipe précédente. Il serait bon qu’ils ne l’omettent pas!

M. Pugeault met en cause la lenteur du déblocage de l’aide de l’Etat à la réfection qui était bloquée depuis 1996…C’est aussi objectivement l’une des causes du non avancement du dossier par le passé !

Surtout, c’est la preuve que gouvernements de gauche comme de droite n’avaient pas rempli cet engagement, alors même que Serge Pugeault se répand partout en affirmant que l’enveloppe accordée dans le cadre du plan de relance n’est que le rattrappage de cette promesse non tenue.

Enfin et c’est important de le souligner, c’est Jack Lang qui a classé ce bâtiment pour des raisons politiciennes en 1985, alors que sa qualité architecturale est très largement décriée.

M. Pugeault a la mémoire bien courte et une lecture partiale et partielle de ce dossier, il n’a même pas le souci de la cohérence dans les propos qu’il tient, trop occupé à politiser à outrance et à vouloir discréditer l’Etat et l’Exécutif…

A SCOTTISH teacher has said that school kids should be encouraged to use Wikipedia for school research, despite doubts over the accuracy of the information on the site.

Ollie Bray, deputy head teacher at Musselburgh Grammar, said that pupils should use it to learn how to evaluate the credibility of information.

But the online encyclopaedia has a reputation for being unreliable as anyone can edit the information it carries, and parent groups say it makes their kids “lazy”.

There have been a number of high profile mistakes on the site – just last week Thierry Henry’s entry had to be locked as angry users vandalised his profile after his handball during the France Ireland football game.

But Ollie insists Wikipedia is a valuable teaching tool – and reckons it is better to teach pupils how to use it properly rather than ban it.

He said: “We, as teachers, should be looking at these disclaimers and working with young people to discuss why articles are disputed or contradict themselves.

“If we start with the belief that everything is subject to opinion, then we can work on how to validate it.”

He suggests teachers and pupils study the “discussion”, “source” and “history” tabs on the website.

The discussion tab will show the youngsters how much debate goes into reaching a compromise when changing disputed facts.

Better access

And he thinks that these skills should be taught alongside internet safety and responsible use, as biased information could also be seen as “inappropriate content”.

He said: “There is extreme content on the internet, but kids only find it because they go looking for it.”

And the teacher – who is currently working for Learning and Teaching Scotland as a national adviser for emerging technologies – also wants kids to have better access to sites such as YouTube, which is banned in some schools and allowed in others.

He said: “Why is it fair that children in East Lothian can get access to hundreds of hours on Channel 4, National Geographic or the Scottish Parliament, when other schools and teachers have not got access to these resources?

“It means that children don’t get to benefit from it, or the teacher or head has to spend time procuring resources which are available for free.”

IT savvy

But the internet site has been blamed for making Scottish schoolchildren lazy, with parents worried that their kids are relying on someone else to do all the hard work for them.

Eleanor Coner from the Scottish Parent Teacher Council said: “Children are very IT-savvy, but they are rubbish at researching.

“The sad fact is most children these days use libraries for computers, not the books. We accept that as a sign of the times, but schools must teach pupils not to believe everything they read.

“It’s dangerous when the internet is littered with opinion and inaccurate information which could be taken as fact.”

Although Wikipedia is edited by its users, the site monitors the changes and responds to inaccuracies when it can.

A disclaimer on the site says: “While Wikipedia articles generally attain a good standard after editing, it is important to note that fledgling, or less well monitored, articles may be susceptible to vandalism and insertion of false information.”

The biggest threat to world peace since the world wars. France “cheating” in their second leg to beat Ireland, and qualify for the next World Cup.

It was dramatic for the fact that the French captain Thierry Henry handled the ball and then tapped it onto to William Gallas who scored the goal, which knocked Ireland out of the World Cup. What followed was worldwide condemnation of this “dastardly act”.

In honour of Diego Maradona who first achieved this feat, I think that this goal deserves to be called the Hand of Cod goal.

Angry people responded by doing what they do best- by vandalizing Thierry Henry’s wikipedia page.

I, like many millions of viewers, watched the World Cup play-off second leg between France and Ireland, hoping for an exciting and entertaining game.  That it certainly was, with the web providing a medium for football fans world wide to vent their anger about the way the French team qualified for the last 32.

In this game, I was fairly neutral but would be lying if I didn’t say that I clung to the romantic hope of Ireland making it to South Africa.  It all looked against them from the first leg but they dug out a great result in Paris over 90 minutes to force the game into extra time.

I don’t want to discuss the handball itself as I think we need to accept that these occurrences will happen from time to time.  I’m more concerned with how individuals, teams, and countries will be incentivised to reduce this happening.  I’ve been an admirer of Thierry Henry for many years as he has possessed exceptional talent that has been a joy to watch, which sometimes permits me to forgive his sometimes arrogant demeanour.  There have however, been occasions where I felt he has been close to crossing the line almost feigning fair play in retrospect.  This is unfortunately nothing more than an inkling as opposed to something that I can specifically state instances of but as an avid follower of football over the years, you do come to appreciate a perception of some players personalities.  Therefore, I have lost much respect for the man since Wednesday as his actions of running exuberantly to the goal scorer Gallas said a lot about the levels of true remorse.  I’m afraid from my view, the public show of apology by sitting with Richard Dunne at the end of the game came across as nothing more than a public relations exercise as he retrospectively knew he had done wrong.  To say “It was handball but I’m not the referee” is nothing more than a cop out.

So, its happened, these things have happened for years, what are FIFA going to do about it?

Well, although the Irish Football Association have requested a replay, it is unlikely to happen.  If FIFA are to refuse such a replay in a situation where TV footage shows a wrong-doing, the player admits the infringement, and French fans openly are ashamed at the way in which their team has progressed, then I would like to know what positives the world leading body will take from this.  Will they stick their heads in the sands again to the problem?

I am critical of bad referees who simply don’t man-manage players well but I do not class referees who make mistakes as bad referees.  To me, these are referees who need better support.  For instance, would the extra official on the goal line that is being trialled in the Europa league have been able to spot the offence?  Most likely as they stand on that side of the goal only metres away from where Henry handled!

This also will raise questions about the use of video technology in the game, something that has been used very successfully in international rugby.  I recall having the same conversation with my parents and friends of the family as a 9 year old in 1986 after the “Hand of God” incident so why then have we not progressed in 23 years?  Why would FIFA not want to use this?  Wasn’t it rumoured that it was through video technology that Zidane got sent off in the last world cup final?

It is all well and good stating that a replay will cause chaos but not using this high-profile game as a reason to introduce greater support for referees is ignorant and negligent to their responsibility as a governing body.  They are scared that a precedent will be set but I will argue that one needs to be set to avoid a repeat of such unsporting behaviour.  As mentioned before, rugby has introduced improvements to support referees, cricket has also for many years so why hasn’t football.  We cannot simply go on placing more and more unfair responsibility on referees.  I strongly believe that this inactivity will only promote the certain thick-skinned officials like Steve Bennett (see my earlier comment about poor man management as I believe Mr. Bennett is a first class example of this) and less of the communicative and bold referees we see in international rugby who gain belief and faith in their own judgement from the support they receive.

To finish off, what realistic options did the referee have on Wednesday?  Yes, he could have spoken with his assistant but let’s assume he didn’t notice the handball either (as he may have been still thinking whether he failed to signal offside – a skill that sometimes requires chameleon eyes) and it did all happen rather quickly.  What options remain for referees in the modern game? Listen to the players or make an educated blind guess? Referees that have taken players’ body language and reaction into account in the English Premier League in the past and have boldly changed decisions (correctly) have been punished so what could a referee on an international stage do?!

In dead ball situations i.e. like when it is resting in the back of the net, why oh why can we not use a video official to support referees?

A fan says, “At least he was man enough to admit what he did and he even told the ref…the ref could have done something about it but he didn’t…Henry feels bad about it and he doesn’t feel like they should have won that way!! Back off haters!”

So, France are going to the World Cup. Keane and co can begin booking their summer holidays for 2010, as they are not going anywhere. The Football Association of Ireland has lodged a complaint with FIFA asking for their World Cup play-off against France to be replayed. Good luck getting Michele Platini to sign that one off! Ireland are out though. That is final. The result says so. And FIFA will not intervene and reverse the result or call for a replay.

In case you haven’t already heard, Thierry Henry broke Irish fans hearts’ last night by scoring in extra time to send France to the 2010 World Cup. As if there hadn’t been enough injustice in the lead up to the World Cup playoffs with the seedings debacle, Ireland were outdone after being arguably the strongest team in their two legged playoff match with France. They battled for 180 minutes across and after being beaten in Ireland showed tremendous courage in beating France 1-0 in Paris to force extra time.

Step up on Monsieur Henry. A double handball hand ball later in the penalty area and a pass to William Gallas who put the ball into an empty net sent Les Blues through 2-1 on aggregate. Irish protestations obviously followed but nothing came of it. A referee never changes his decision. In a statement today, football’s world governing body said: “As stated in Law 5 of the Laws of the Game, and also in Article 13, paragraph 6 of the Regulations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, ‘no protests may be made about the referee’s decisions regarding facts connected with play. Such decisions are final, unless otherwise stipulated in the Fifa Disciplinary Code.’”

The media reaction and the reaction in Ireland has been phenomenal. A sense of injustice is being felt and the arguments will ramble on all the way to South Africa next summer where the finals are being held. The Irish FA and even the Irish government (who have been heavily involved today) should ask themselves what they would have made of it Robbie Keane scoring a similar goal at the other end of the stadium to take Ireland to the World Cup? Robbie Keane would not have turned round and told the referee he had handled the ball and there should be no goal. This simply does not happen. Football begins as a level playing field each match and some decisions will go with and some will go against your team. Giovanni Trapattoni, the Republic of Ireland’s manger is hugely experienced and knows very well that if it had been the other way round that he would have thought it was hard luck the French but there is nothing that can be done. Trapattoni is a realist and said after the game, he does not expect a replay. “When a referee decides a game has finished I know it is impossible to replay the game,” said the Italian.

Some pundits, like Tony Cascorino, a former Republic of Ireland international have suggested that Henry should have done the gentlemanly thing and owned up to the referee that he had controlled the ball with his hand. This is ludicrous. We cannot get to the stage where players have the power to overturn referees decisions even for the better. Self regulation of a football match by players will lead to chaos and the referee will not have a clue what is going on (which by the way is often the situation now anyway) It would be a case of the lunatics running the asylum. Not all players will own up to the referee on diving or handling the ball, some might but others (most) won’t.

But can we follow Cascorino’s train of thought and blame Thierry Henry for not owning up to his indiscretion? The simple answer is no. If Ireland’s talismanic striker Robbie Keane had scored in similar fashion at the other end, he would have run off towards the Irish fans and done his trademark cart wheel in celebration at the thought of playing on the world’s biggest stage next summer and being the Irish hero who had sent them there. The Irish FA have cleverly introduced mind games by lavishing praise on Henry’s talents as a footballer before pointing out that his legacy will be tainted with this scandal. But it won’t, as Henry is protected by the fact that the decision was not his to make. Henry knows he hand balled it but jurisdiction for this decision was not his. It was the match officials’ choice and that is where the buck stops; unfortunately for the Irish fans.

Henry obviously did something wrong if he deliberately handled the ball and deceived the referee. This is cheating. But the simple way to eradicate this is to introduce technology to stop it. These things happen in sport and they will happen again. It goes back to the famous 1966 World Cup Final where England benefited from a dodgy Russian linesman. What would have happened in 1986 if one Diego Maradona had so, ‘oh hang on a sec, I didn’t head that in, I used my fist.’ England may have won the 1986 World Cup. But Maradona was never going to own up to it in the same way Henry wasn’t going to. The stakes were too high. Whether they should have owned up could take another entire blog post. But it is Football as a sport that is in the wrong by remaining in the dark ages of technology. Other sports have demonstrated how easy it is to incorporate technology that aids the fair outcome of a sporting tussle. Look at how hawk eye has been introduced into Tennis Grand Slams. Video replay technology has been introduced into international Rugby for try decisions and is used in Cricket to decide on run outs. Football is big business and the amount of money the Irish FA are going to lose out on in sponsorships and endorsements is huge considering how easy it would have been to ensure they had a fair chance of realising their World Cup pot of gold dream.

The game last night is undoubtedly more evidence for the need for technology to aid the match officials for goal line decisions or penalty area decisions but not all over the pitch. It won’t spoil the game and will vastly improve it. Had it been introduced this year and France were beaten on penalties, Monsieur Henry may well be at home now flicking through holiday brochures for next summer as he wouldn’t be going to South Africa.

Als Thierry Henry gestern Abend mit seinem Handspiel das WM-Ticket für Frankfreich löste, kamen in mir sofort Erinnerungen an das Spiel vom Effzeh auf Schalke 1998 auf. Da es die 11Freunde hier auch noch einmal in gleichem Zusammenhang hervorholen, möchte ich dies auch noch einmal tun.

Bis heute bin ich davon überzeugt das dieses Handspiel vom Schalker Held den ersten Abstieg besiegelt hat! Ebenfalls bis heute war es ein mich persönlich prägendes Spiel. Mit damals 16 war ich das erste Mal alleine im Gästeblock, während meine Eltern sich irgendwo im alten Parkstadion auf Ihre Sitzplätze niederließen.

Ich erinnere mich noch an den nächsten Auftritt im Parkstadion nach dem ersten Aufstieg. Wir mussten uns damals ein Banner mit den Worten “Heldentaten vergisst man nie” ansehen…

POURQUOI IL FAUT SY OPPOSER

LGV RHIN-RHÔNE : UNE HAUSSE INELUCTABLE DE LA FISCALITE !

Nous ne pouvons quapprouver lobjectif de développer largement les offres de transports publics afin de les rendre disponibles pour le plus grand nombreCest même pour cette raison entre autre- que nous sommes opposés à la LGV. Car les budgets de plus en plus contraints des Régions et autres collectivités ne leur permettront jamais de financer la LGV et ses 3 branches ( 10 milliards deuros ? ) et ce qui relève des véritables compétences régionales : lexploitation et la modernisation du réseau TER en plein « boom », la modernisation des gares (1)

Dans la plupart des domaines, les notions de budget dinvestissement et de fonctionnement sont mises en parallèle des annonces de projet. Or pour les transports cela est devenu rarissime. Pourtant les structures nationales et régionales qui assurent la gestion des transports publics voient leurs déficits se creuser.

Dès sa création, Réseau Ferré de France ( RFF) a hérité de la dette de la SNCF sélevant à environ 20 milliards deuroset qui serait aujourdhui de plus de 28 milliards. Alors que plus de la moitié du réseau ferré est obsolète !

A lheure où le développement durable prétend devenir une ligne directrice de laction publique, le coût sous-estimé de ce service public ferroviaire régional et interréginal indispensable explose et fait émerger un doute sérieux sur sa propre « durabilité »(2).

Un rapport (3) démontre pourquoi et comment le coût du km/transport augmente dannée en année, bien plus vite que les recettes. Chaque km de réseau existant coûte de plus en plus cher. Chaque nouveau km construit ( et celui dune LGV est beaucoup plus cher ) augmente ce boulet financier.

Or le financement des transports se compose de subventions, c’est-à-dire dimpôts, de taxes sur les entreprises, et des recettes payées par les usagers. La solution à la mode pour combler ces déficits chroniques est actuellement lemprunt, qui retarde les échéances mais les rend de plus en plus lourdes. Les coûts financiers sajoutant aux coûts de fonctionnement.

Pour parvenir à assurer leur mission TER, les Régions, souvent les autres collectivités ( Conseils Généraux, agglomérations..) nauront dautre choix quaugmenter leur fiscalité locale. Et la SNCF daugmenter ses tarifs.

Il est donc grand temps pour les contribuables et aux usagers de demander des comptes transparents à leurs élus locaux qui sont favorables à la LGV, mais aussi à RFF et à la SNCF qui leur présentent des données incomplètes. Et aux élus locaux de demander aux Conseils Régionaux et autres collectivités sapprêtant à financer ce projet de combien sera la hausse de la fiscalité et sa durée. Car, nen doutons pas, nos enfants hériteront de lendettement et des impôts.

Une analyse prospective prenant en compte la nécessité de budgéter le coût dexploitation des réseaux, lamortissement des investissements, la couverture de la detteet lextension prévisible des besoins des usagers (4), devrait logiquement conduire les Régions à renoncer à des dépenses pharaoniques inutiles comme celle de la LGV. Pour le moment, le coût global réel de la LGV reste inconnu.
La capacité des collectivités à se désendetter est un atout décisif pour ne pas obérer leurs capacités futures à entretenir le réseau TER et à létendre. Cest de ce service public dont nous avons besoin aujourdhui et pour demain.

LE POUVOIR DE VOTER NON A LA LGV

Pour se faire entendre, la population hostile à la LGV ne peut guère compter sur un débat démocratique digne de ce nom. Aujourdhui, elle se rend compte quelle ne peut pas non plus compter sur ses représentants élus, à quelques exceptions près. Ils soutiennent aveuglément ce projet, sourds à nos informations et mises en garde, souvent sans avoir étudié le dossier.

Outre laction des associations qui se battent en son nom, le citoyen dispose toutefois dune autre arme, quil va devoir utiliser : le bulletin de vote. Dans les échéances électorales à venir, il lui reviendra donc de sélectionner les candidat(e)s en fonction des positions quils ont prises ( ou leur silence complice ) sur ce projet.

Cest simple : pour voter non à la LGV et à la hausse des impôts qui va avec, votez non aux candidat(e)s qui la soutiennent ! Vous pouvez encore les interroger

(2) Les 2500 km de LGV du Grenelle de lenvironnement sont un effet dannonce : il ny a aucun financement en face. Lestimation des projets en cours ou à terminer ( TGV Est, LGV Bordeaux/Hendaye, TGV Paca, LGV Centre AuvergneLGV Rhin Rhône ) se monte près de 40 milliards deuros ! Plus que le nécessaire pour rénover tout le réseau national ! Un km de TGV, cest 20Meuros, moderniser une ligne, 2M

LGV BRANCHE SUD : IL NY A RIEN « DINELUC-

TABLE » : LES ASSOCIATIONS SE MOBILISENT !

Depuis 6 ans, ACTIF en Bresse, puis dautres associations, ont animé un débat public sur lopportunité de la LGV dans les communes de la Bresse Bourguignonne, soutenant lidée que loptimisation et lentretien des lignes existantes étaient préférables et beaucoup moins coûteux pour les usagers, contribuables et riverains.

Fin juin 2008, convenant que les tracés proposés par RFF constituaient un massacre de lenvironnement comme nous navions cessé de le dire, les élus favorables à la LGV ont proposé un fuseau longeant lautoroute A 39 qui constitue lui aussi un désastre.

Cest cette soit-disant « solution » qui fait l’objet d’une nouvelle « consultation publique » depuis le 9 octobre pour une durée de 2 mois. Une « farce » ! En gros, on nous propose de choisir la couleur du train ! Pour faire passer en force et à grande vitesse un mauvais projet

Lorganisation du « débat public » fait la part belle aux seuls élus favorables. Les riverains et leurs associations de lAin, du Jura, de la Côte dOr et de la Saône et Loire, qui ont déjà tenu des réunions publiques dinformation indépendante, informé les élus et pouvoirs publics, entendent donner un signal fort face à la sourde oreille quopposent nombre délus et décideurs.

I love thee… that you are in almost every blooming mall that I have ever shopped… and if that is not enough… you are helping me to spend more of my money by opening more stores in lucky select JC Penney’s across the United States.

Bless you, because I thought you weren’t really giving me enough opportunity to spend my money already.

Now, I have yet another reason to walk into a JC Penny’s for more than just the $12.99 sitting fee in your Photo Booth center.

I used to take my kids there for their baby pictures… but now I just go there to harangue high school part-time photographers by sitting in making ju-jee faces in the camera.

Trust me.

You are so kind to give me samples in little plastic cups to take home… sure to lock me into the use of yet another $130 an ounce wrinkle cream for the rest of my life.

I have no more counter space in my bathroom due to your generosity.

Thank you to you, beloved, Sephora… for the fact that every time I walk into the house from one of your stores I smell like a perfumery…

“Honey, do like this Gucci fragrance?” And, I stick out my arm.

My husband puts his nose above my arm, “No, not there, honey. That’s Chanel. You have to move your nose up 3 inches toward my elbow.” My husband still hovers his nose above my arm… “No, honey, not there, that’s a Britney Spears fragrance that I despise… Uh… How about this one on the back of my wrist — that’s the new Thierry Mugler… what do you think?”

Poor guy… he doesn’t realize that I have sprayed 24 different fragrances on the fronts and backs of each arm, behind each ear, and between each toe…

“So, which one do you like, honey?… Honey? Honey?… What, baby?… You don’t look so good…”

He has now turned a little pale, and evidently has sprouted a migraine from all the combined scents that will now reside for the next 24 hours on my little piece of “sumpin sumpin” that he was hoping “to get some” from later.

“Honey, I am only trying to make myself more attractive to you, baby.”

No response.

Grandiose eyelashes, eyeshadows that you never think that you would actually wear…

And, of course, after said demo, you are walking out of there looking like something out of a Cosmo magazine.

You are looking absolutely divine! 

However, after you’ve spent $700 to get all of that absolutely divine looking stuff that will give you that absolutely divine looking “look,” you take it home and try to re-create that divine looking “look” and walk out of your bathroom looking  something more like Frankenstein’s cousin… Frau Hosselheimerbrau… albeit, with great eyelashes.

I love those little testers that you guys make up for him.

All different kinds of men’s fragrances. You are just too generous.

Of course, he has never tried any of these because I have never given them to him… those little darn fragrance sprayers are just too cute.

I have to hoard them for myself, even though they’re full of men’s fragrances. I think I have about 23 of them…

Honestly though, I could go on all day about the attributes of Sephora…

My knees get weak when I walk by their black-and-white striped storefront.

“Sean Penn, Cambodia, Here We Come!”

The job of being an editor on The Amazing Race is really a tough one. In each episode, you need to turn the unsuspenseful into the suspenseful, and emphasize the zany in the mundane. Of course, it helps that often The Amazing Race is suspenseful, and that it is often extremely zany, and that the cast of characters involved can often enhance both of these elements. As such, it is likely every editor’s dream to receive a team like Zev and Justin, who deciding that Phnom Penh is actually Sean Penn, and who strike up a hilarious and fantastic relationship with their cab driver Thierry.

However, the editors also have to come to terms with how, precisely, they’re going to send someone home. Last week, Marcy and Ron got sent home after struggling with a Detour (they were just too slow, plain and simple), so Marcy got a lot of talking heads about her father’s time in Vietnam. The episode was a sendoff, albeit it a slight one, a last hurrah. In other instances, the editors love playing up irony or the impact of a single mistake, and sometimes they even play a game of Schadenfreude.

But as the teams race through Cambodia, the editors have the toughest job of all: turning triumph into adversity in a split second. It’s a chance of pace the episode handles with the grace of a newborn giraffe, heightening my sympathy for the difficulty of the editors’ job while also lowering my interest in this season, all in one fell swoop.

We were shifting emotional gears without a clutch in that scene where, after Zev and Justin check in after a leg both hilarious and triumphant, moving from the back of the pack into first place even after falling behind at the roadblock, we find them searching through their bags. The previews from last week told us that someone was going to lose their passports, so I spent the entire episode scanning to see if they had their fanny packs, but it was a single piece of paper that was misplaced somewhere in the leg that was missing. Chances are they had been racing without it all day, falling out somewhere in the labyrinth of the Russian market or perhaps even back at the airport. There’s no way of knowing where it fell out, and with the sun starting to set we finally see the team that was getting me excited about this season giving up: there was no way they could find it before the other teams arrived, so they are forced to walk away from the race in the worst way possible.

Really, this wouldn’t have had any impact if it had happened to another team, but these two were on fire all episode. Their relationship with Thierry was legitimately fantastic to watch, as the cab drive took to their discussions of karma and their legitimate kindness. Justin got called “a very nice man” by the woman at the standby counter, Zev had a few great one-liners, and overall I was just plain charmed. They’re like an odd couple comedy pairing that gets along enormously well, and while Zev’s patience temporarily disappeared during the Roadblock they got back on track quickly until finally being derailed. Zev chalks it all up to a mistake that can’t be fixed, while Justin blames himself and his sense of carelessness, but neither of them are at fault: careless or no, they ran a fantastic leg that was enormously entertaining to watch, and you could see the editors having fun with it. Sometimes, you presume we saw so much of one team because they were leaving soon (Marcy and Ron, for example), but these guys would have dominated this episode regardless.

Seeing them go home this early is honestly painful. They were one of the teams that really stood out, emerging as something different than what we’ve seen before. Mika and Canaan? Megan and Cheynne? There’s nothing that draws me to these teams except for their incompetence. I wanted to see Zev and Justin succeed, whereas I only want to see most of the other teams continue to not recognize Jackie Kennedy. I think that the editors managed to make the other teams pretty engaging here, but only because of their mistakes: this was a very funny and enjoyable hour of television until things turned sour, and at that point it was just unmitigated sadness.

I won’t stop watching, as I like the race and I do want to continue to see great sequences like Flight Time and Big Easy running down a fleeing woman and then nearly crushing her against a stall. That kind of thing is still kind of great, and next week’s trip to Dubai seems like the kind of diverse leg that would definitely challenge teams. However, just as I was starting to really root for a team, they disappear: it’s Mike and Mel all over again, and I just wish there was something we could do to keep this from happening.

So, if I don’t blog for a while, it’s because I’m patenting to a tattoo passport.

Cultural Observations

• In the words of Seth and Amy, REALLY? These people didn’t know who Jackie Kennedy was? I’m Canadian, and I knew who Jackie Kennedy was. In fact, I knew from the long-shot of the image in the newspaper, yet alone the close-ups that the players would have been afforded. I know they’re in a race, so they didn’t look at it quickly, but the episode got a lot of mileage about people believing it is Queen Elizabeth, or a Queen, or someone who CLEARLY looks Cambodian in a black and white photograph.
• Brian and Ericka aren’t my favourite team on the team by any means, but I thought that their team name of Jungle Fever is so bad it’s kind of clever – I’ll be curious to see where they go from here, as after some early struggles they’re a strong male/female team that could go far.
• Lance’s performance at the mat gave us another classic Phil reaction (although one edited in after the fact, although he had one similar in the long shot we saw), but he seriously needs to leave soon.
• Maybe it’s just me, but the Harlem Globetrotters gear seems like cheating to me: unlike Rob and Amber, who would actually be recognized no matter what clothes they wore, two big black men could be something other than Harlem Globetrotters, so the gear is an unfair advantage for luring in American-born helpers.
• The Roadblock and the Detour were kind of interesting: the former was way too easy and ultimately irrelevant, but the latter had some real strategy. The “Cover” option would have been really challenging if a lot of teams had done it, but when only Lance and Keri did it this wasn’t the case. It’s one thing to find one family, it’s another to find four or five, so the scarf option would be safer in terms of potential numbers if potentially more challenging.

I had an interesting and cultured day out on Sunday.  One of my students is involved with the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, and so I was lucky enough to be invited to one of their concerts.  The concert took place at the Chukyo University Center for Culture & Arts – an impressive building in Kanayama (Nagoya), which I had not seen before.

The concert was Beethoven Cycle #4, which includes symphony number 4 and symphony number 5 (5 is the really famous “bo-bo-bo-bom” one!).  I’m not a massive classical music fan, but the conductor at this concert was Thierry Fischer, so I knew it would be good.

I was actually quite blown away by it, more than I expected to be.  The whole experience also got me thinking about classical music in general.  Why is it so universally popular?  Of course, classical music is studied at school, not just in Europe and America, but also in Japan.  Many of my students play piano, or some other instrument, and have to learn classical pieces for school concerts.  There’s a very interesting article here on the topic of classical music in Japan, and I welcome your views on this subject too.

After the concert, my sensory overload continued, but this time sound was replaced by taste.  We went to a restaurant I have often looked at but never been to.  If you’ve been to a large city in Japan you’re bound to have seen one like it (I don’t know if they’re chains or not?!).  Anyway, this restaurant has a giant mechanical crab moving above the entrance!  It’s called Sapporo Kanihonke, and it is, of course, a crab and seafood restaurant.

I really really wanted to take photos of every course, because the food was so amazing and I’ve never seen (or tasted!) seafood like it!  But it was such a nice place, and I was in such a small group of people, that I felt it might be inappropriate to do so.  So, please see the menu here for mouth-watering pictures of what I ate!

…but it was a little different (I think it was the autumn special or something).

What we had included a kind of grilled crab part where you cook the crab right there on the table, and also a yogurt/fruit dessert.  There was soooooo much food, I felt like I didn’t need to eat for a week!

Sapporo Kanihonke is a bit on the pricey side, but if you’re looking for somewhere for a special occasion I would highly recommend it. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and the restaurant itself was gorgeous too.

Waar komen wij vandaan? Waar gaan we uiteindelijk naartoe? Wat is de zin van ons leven? Wat is goed? Wat is kwaad? Waarom bestaan er dwergen met dwergenpietjes die elkaar tot bloedens toe verticaal in de dwergenpoepjes nemen?
Jawel, u merkt het al wel. Vandaag bewandelt Zwaffelijzer een voorheen ongekend pad. Vandaag wagen we ons aan een filosofisch uitje. Maar het centrale thema is niet een van de, weliswaar bijzonder interessante, bovenstaande vragen..
Neen, we behandelen daarentegen een actueler thema. Een thema waarmee ik, uw Zwaffelijzer-gezant voor vandaag, rechtstreeks in aanraking ben gekomen.

Maar laat ons niet al te voortvarend van start gaan en beginnen bij het prille begin..
Ongeveer 13,7 miljard jaren geleden ontstond er uit niets iets. De oerknal.
Geheel terzijde merk ik trouwens op dat oerknal maar een raar woord is. Maar het dekt de lading behoorlijk goed.
Verticuteerapparaat is dan weer wel een leuk woord. Of roomsoes.
‘Laatst at ik een roomsoes’. Geef toe, het bekt lekker.
‘Laatst at ik een verticuteerapparaat’ klinkt eveneens aangenaam in de oren, alleen is het dan weer niet aangewezen om van het laatstgenoemde object te smikkel-smakkel-smikkelen. Hoewel, tuinmannen doen soms gekke dingen.

Soms doen ze zelfs zo gek, dat je denkt: wauw, dat is wel heel gek. Dat heb je vooral als je tuinman een pygmee is.
Een gouden tip, even tussendoor, als je tuinman een pygmee is (hoe groot is de kans? Maar toch, als schrijver dien je rekening te houden met alle mogelijke scenario’s…) dan kan je hem best een belletje om doen.
Geen koeienbel natuurlijk, want dan valt de arme pygmee om.
Waarom een belletje hoor ik je denken? O ja, ik hoor die hersenpannetjes tot hier krikkel-krakkel-krikkelen.
Maar goed, waar was ik gebleven? Want met al dat innig schrijver-lezer contact raak ik de draad weleens kwijt. Een rode. Met kleine witte vlekjes. Ik durf het soms wel de dalmatiërdraad met rode hond noemen. Maar niet luidop, en zeker niet in het openbaar!
Voor je het weet zit je in het zothuis.

Bladluis.
Een pygmee met een belletje, want anders vind je hem niet terug.

Het is natuurlijk ook voor de veiligheid, want stel je maar eens voor dat je hem niet ziet en een boek op zijn bruine knikker laat vallen, of een kopje melk. Sjonge sjonge, dan heeft Herman pijn.
‘Wie’,zegt u? Ik hoor het weer krikkel-krakkel-krikkelen in mn oortjes.
Wel, ik herhaal het lekker niet! Had je maar beter moeten opletten, lapzwans! Lapzwans, Nog zo een leuk woord, vooral als je het 13 keer en half na elkaar zegt.

En omdat ik in een goede bui ben, herhaal ik het wel: Herman. Een typische naam voor een pygmee.

En nu kan je wel zeggen, ‘die Thierry schrijft me daar racistisch gebroddel’, maar niets is minder waar. Pygmeeën zijn immers geen ras apart. Ze zijn dan wel zwart, maar niet alle negers zijn immers pygmeeën. Sommige zijn wel twee meter hoog en geven je zo een klap met een houten balk. Ik let dus wel mooi op m’n tellen.
