im really enjoying being at the end of a decade. its the first one i can remember all of; the first one i can feel like, five years ago wasnt that long ago. i guess it is though!

i have a few decade digests to roll out. first up is concerts. this is late decade heavy because not as many bands went through scotland as they do in vancouver, and also i can afford to go to a lot more of them now!

the absolute worst of this millennium has to be given to guitar legend Jeff Beck (Ottawa 2008) who is a hundred years old and still wearing crazy glam rock glitter spandex from the 70s with a crosss-breed haircut of Brian May and Rod Stewart. Just like sports stars, you gotta retire with grace. Jeff missed that theory. we left after forty minutes of utter drivel and stumbled on an amazing samba band who were a lot more fun!

In this video, I was play testing a new medium, glass//paint makers, to use when performing PoS in cafes, bars, on the train, bus, etc.   I used a Flip camera, loaned out to me from school. Since I don’t have a full sized tripod, most of the video is shot drawing with my right hand, and filmed with my left. Clearly, I need some assistance documenting! …I was really anxious to try this.

While the work is somewhat compromised due to my concentration being split between drawing and documenting, I think this is a really exciting way to mobilize people drawing.   It’s fast, erasable, and doable on most surfaces found in public spaces.  You don’t need to carry anything else with you except THIS, which allows you to draw on glass, chalkboards, and lightboards.  These are just a smattering of the many slick surfaces which we interact with daily.  I also bought this one, but found its wide diameter to be a nuisance.  Coupled with the fact you have to squeeze while you draw to get a fair amount of paint to come out, I stopped using it altogether.

The idea for painting on glass first began this summer, when I created a prototype installation for PoS.

I created this using doors from a plethora of old jewelry boxes I found in thrift stores this summer while in Florida.  The point of this prototype was to continue my work with doors under a different context.  This time, the doors would be functional, and people could walk through them in a cyclical motion.  This action is meant to demonstrate that meeting new people and learning to accept their ways is a perpetual cycle occurring in our lives.

Most of the doors were made of wooden frames which surrounded glass.  I decided to work with the glass instead of combat it, so I left spaces open for people inside the installation to get a peek of who they were about to meet once they took the risk and opened the door.

My first reaction after hearing this song (while high) was to ask my friend who put it on to play it again. He was a bit aghast at the idea, especially because the next song on the album (the Garden State soundtrack) was a Simon and Garfunkel song; and, well, he’s a big Simon and Garfunkel fan. Anyway, this song basically has all the cool different things going on that jazz songs have, except it has a different sound, which arises from the different instruments used and the fact that there is someone singing (which isn’t typical in jazz songs, at least the ones I listen to). The difference in sound comes from the fact that the instruments being played are, well, Middle Eastern instruments (or at the very least they sound Middle Eastern).

I don’t really know what this song is about, but I don’t think it really matters when it comes down to it, especially when you’re high. It just provides with a really cool groovy sound that you can get immersed in. Although I will warn you that you will be a little bit upset when this song finally ends. But it’s okay, you can play it again when it finishes (as long as you aren’t in the same room as a Simon and Garfunkel fan). I could see this song eventually getting old, and when it does I guess you can stop listening to it, but until that time, put it on.

As I prepare to DJ the opening of LA Blush Boutique’s second location next week, I began thinking about how essential song selection is for different types of events. With a Blush’tini in hand and an appetite for the trendiest new & affordable clothes, customers definitely do not want to feel as though they are shopping in an ordinary store – especially at a store’s launch party. Here’s where I come in. First thing I consider when putting together my playlist is Who are these people?  and How do I want to make them feel? Secondly, I do not want to force them out of the store with very loud hardcore electro beats, because honestly – this isn’t a club (even though MY ideal store would have house music playing 24/7).

With that said, I want to create a classy experience for these shoppers. One that will excite them, stimulate their senses, and maybe even put a little swing in their step (or maybe that will be from the Blush’tinis?). Today’s song selection will include some of the artists and my favorite songs I will be incorporating into my playlist at the November 18th Launch Party of Blush Boutique in Calabasas.

Después de varios rumores y suposiciones, finalmente los organizadores del Goliath Festival dieron a conocer el cartel oficial y definitivo de los artistas que se presentarán en el evento.

Una de las primeras bandas internacionales en confirmar fueron los Black Eyed Peas, pero hasta hace unas semanas todo era incertidumbre con respecto a este evento ya que no se habían confirmado algunos artistas.

Finalmente esta semana se afinaron los últimos detalles de quiénes serían las bandas que se incorporarían al cartel oficial del primer festival Goliath.

Algunos de los grandes nombres de talla internacional son: Thievery Corporation, Justice Dj Set, The Faint y Pitbull, entre otros.

Con respecto a bandas nacionales, el festival contará con las actuacines de: Austin Tv, Sussie 4, Los Concorde, Niña Dioz, Simplifiers y Los Músicos de José, por mencionar a algunos.

El Goliath Festival, que celebra su primera edición (y esperemos que no sea la última), se llevará a cabo el próximo sábado 5 de diciembre en la Alameda Poniente Santa Fe.

My intention of going to the Mana Culture grand opening was only to check the goods out on Taylor Moseley.  The lack of expectations were quickly blown away when stepping onto the property that houses the eclectic and bountiful selection of jewelry.  It didn’t hurt that boutique owner, Johnavi along with Charity Bash could throw a cultural soiree that transported guests to somewhere in between a Polynesian beach bash and a swanky supper club from Mana Culture’s very own backyard.  International act DJ el John Selector, catapulted by the infamous Thievery Corporation, pulled the A-game lounge card that made for a lovely evening of conversation and entertainment.

Hosting both local and international artisans, the converted house on S. 1st Street uses themes to display jewelry and accessory collections into one of 3 main spaces used by the boutique.

Tucked in the side room one can find a series of necklaces, earrings and bracelets inspired by designs similar to those dating back to 2500 B.C. in the Middle East.  The pairing of modern trends like fresh water pearls and braided ribbon bring this collection up to date and ready to wear for any special occasion.

I would like to note the amount of women who walked out of the shop newly styled and satisfied customers.  The Conservative Button-up left the boutique with an embroidered pair of boots that were TO DIE FOR and would surely become a staple to her wardrobe.   The free spirited wanderer walked away with a new pair of hand carved bone earrings to gift to a friend that sparked a heart warming gesture.

There must have been a feeling in the air, because before I knew it I was the new owner of a piece that makes me proud to wear.

Mana Culture provides a niche for a cross culture that is aware of action and consequence. The crowd was a perfect compliment to the primal blend of goods. The night was fantastic, my only regret was that it ended so soon.  I met some fantastic and very talented women who are dressing, accessorizing & contributing to the lifestyle of the Austin woman.
