They are a pretty neat band that live in different parts of the world for the last few years and between touring they work regular jobs, washing dishes, pouring pints and checking coats in nightclubs. I believe they are living in Mexico D.F. right now…before they used to live in France.

BOOHA BAR în colaborare cu TBA CREW BOOKING vă invită în seara de 31.10.2009, începând cu orele 21:00, la BOOHA INDIE-POP NIGHT cu invitatul special al serii: ANDY GRIER (vocals from THIEVES LIKE US) ce va mixa un DJ-Set. Intrarea va fi liberă.

Trupa THIEVES LIKE US s-a format în 2002 într-un parc berlinez. Doi dintre ei sunt suedezi (Pontus Berghe-tobe, Bjorn Berglund-clape) iar vocalistul Andy Grier e american. Formaţia se auto-descrie ca fiind un vehicul muzical-o navă spaţială elegantă, direcţionată spre ascultători. Muzical s-au aliniat cu Europa şi consideră Paris-ul casa lor. Auto-declaraţi un POP BAND, sintetizează multe stiluri muzicale porind de la italo-disco, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, până la hip-hop, toate sub o aură de electro, ceea ce îi face să fie consideraţi „clasici”.

IAMX Live in Bucharest

IAMX Live in Bucharest, at Fratelli Studios, Thursday October 1st. Former Sneaker Pimps front man, Chris Corner, brings his new project to Bucharest to the delight of his fans here in Romania. I’ve seen a Tour Diary on MTV the other day and all I can say is that I can’t wait to see this live show.

Those Dancing Days @ Control Club

Things get even better this Friday with the concert of Swedish indie pop babes Those Dancing Days. Have a listen below. It’s the only introduction worthy of the dancing concert this will surely turn out to be. Those Dancing Days will be performing at Control Club on Friday, October 2nd. This concert will also mark the club’s first year of existence, one that’s been filled with great performances and that promises a whole lot more for the future. So, make sure you get there early as it will surely fill up over capacity.

Most people, by now, must be getting to know that The Twelves are sheer tremendousness on a stick. The Brazilian duo have been lambasting us with killer remixes for a while now, rarely letting their very high standards slip. ClassABryson posted some amazing Twelves remixes here a while back. Anyway, you’ll be pleased to know that we have some great stuff for you today on WANARB. Firstly though, we must thank Et Musique Pour Tous for these, because frankly – we got them off their site! Apologies for the late weekend mixtape but i’ve been a busy boy. As many of you will know, this Wednesday past happened to be the 9/9/09. I was going to make a special mixtape up on the Wednesday to commemorate this once in a lifetime date. Well, my lifetime anyway, unless i somehow live till September 2109. Anyways, i couldn’t get round to making the mix up on the Wednesday due to more important matters, ie. getting drunk and watching the Scotland vs Holland game round the local watering hole. So i thought to myself “i’ll make it on the Thursday”….but i was too hungover. Friday? Went and seen a friends band playing in Stereo (i’ll post some stuff soon). Saturday? Couldn’t. It’s a long story.

I was addicted to this song for a solid 4 days, but then I started listening to Voxtrot again.

This is my least favorite time of year. The time when, as a high school student, you start to feel the little freedom and autonomy you so enjoyed over the summer vacation slowly start to slip away and fade in the foreboding shadow of the impending school year. Assignments that you carelessly avoided during June and July finally rear their ugly heads, smirking vindictively as if to say, “You procrastinated, so now I’m going to make your life hell you lazy doucheface.” Instead of going outside to enjoy the amazing weather, you sit in your sepulchral room reading enigmatic French texts on the nature of cruelty and reteaching yourself how to solve logarithmic functions, all the while cursing your misfortune. And for what? Just so you can sit through another 9 months of pointless and life draining classes and maybe get good grades, and then maybe get into a posh university which might help you achieve vocational goals which could allow you to have a “good” life… whatever that means.

Grr.

Ok, well perhaps I exaggerated a little, but still, I am hella stressed out and the fact that college admissions, my IB scores, and SAT/ACT scores will be determined in the next few months is not helping matters. Which is where the delusion comes in. Yep, you heard me right, I am totally denying the fact that this semester is as important as it is. In fact I’m still pretending I’ve got weeks of glorious summer left to do stupid crap. Aiding me in my endeavors is this collection of summery songs. I hope you like them, and please, please pray for me. I need it.

Tonight’s Today – Jack Peñate
This song was on serious repeat when I first heard it. I’m not too familiar with this guy’s earlier work, so I can’t really vouch for the whole “musical transformation” thing I’ve been reading everywhere. All I know is that this song is amazingly awesome, and kind of like Chumbawamba’s “I Get Knocked Down” for the enlightened set in its energy and anthemic quality… minus the chavishness though.

A really fun song. Perfect soundtrack for a night of adolescent debauchery.

Good Dancers – The Sleepy Jackson
Before Luke Steele transformed into the psychedelic shaman we all love and know from Empire of the Sun, he was a member of The Sleepy Jackson. I love the dreamy warm feeling of this song; it’s rich and layered and absolutely delicious. Download NOW!

Sounds like Magistrates with a female vocalist, which is pointedly amazing.

So Insane – Discovery
When I heard that the singer from Ra Ra Riot and the drummer from Vampire Weekend were forming a group I was mega psyched. I wasn’t disappointed. With lyrics like “when I saw you at the discothèque/send my vibe out to you” how could you not love it?

Dressed to Digress – Boy Crisis
Continuing in the vein of songs with cheesily good lyrics is this little gem. Someone I can’t remember said that Boy Crisis is what you do when you get an Art degree at Wesleyan and your life lacks direction. I don’t know about all that, but I was sold when I heard the line “My guess is that you might bless/me with your holy water just like you were a pope baby.” Yeah, I know.

Terminally Chill – Neon Indian
The title is self-explanatory. Subdued and funky.

In A Dream – Skybox
My friend and I were singing this song all summer. It’s very MGMT-esque, but not in a bad way. I also like the weird little hiccup/yodel thing the lead singer does in the chorus. It’s fun!

Animal – Miike Snow
I don’t really understand this song, but it makes me smile.

Daylight – Matt and Kim
Possibly the most upbeat and summery song ever written. You can’t listen to it without smiling/dancing.

Vacationing People – Foreign Born
Person to Person is an amazing album to listen to, especially during this time of year. The layered vocals are particularly lovely.

Fangela – Here We Go Magic
I don’t think I’d ever been more excited for a debut that when I was waiting for the Here We Go Magic album to come out. It’s truly a masterpiece. This song might be a little subdued for a summer playlist, but I absolutely love it. Luke Temple has the voice of an angel.

I was gonna do a write-up about Pretty in Pink at some point anyway, but after yesterday’s precedings, doing so takes on a new meaning. As does Ally Sheedy’s utterance that “when you grow up, your heart dies” from The Breakfast Club. As we all probably know by now, writer-director-producer Brat Pack auteur John Hughes died of a heart attack yesterday.

So, John Hughes movies follow me, as they do for many who came of age between 1980 and 2000 (and maybe today?). His movies were a mainstay of my youth, on hand at basically any slumber party or get-together I went to. I just saw The Breakfast Club on cable last weekend when I was visiting my parents. I also just read Lawrence Grossberg’s essay “Cinema, Postmodernity and Authenticity,” which discusses the soundtracks to Hughes movies in depth. 

For whatever it’s worth, my favorite Hughes movie is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Now, eulogizing Hughes doesn’t mean we can’t be critical of his work. For one, there’s obvious issues with racism (Long Duck Dong, *shudder*). For another, he wasn’t the kindest to women. Why does Anthony Michael Hall get to take advantage of the black-out drunk popular girl in Sixteen Candles for laughs and macho acclaim? Why does Judd Nelson get Molly Ringwald at the end of The Breakfast Club after spending the majority of Saturday dentention bullying and debasing her? With the exception of Andi Walsh, most of his kids were upper-middle class. And sometimes his movies are just way to slick, pat, and essentializing in their characterization (hello, Breakfast Club). There are other issues I’m forgetting, so please feel free to contribute (especially if the Hughes legacy means nothing to you).

But one thing I can’t fault the man for is how he used pop music. Pitchfork did a great tribute yesterday, so I’ll link it here.

Extending further, I’d like to highlight two female characters Hughes wrote that I hold dear, relate in some way to the project of this blog, and tend to get broadsided in the conversation. Today, I’ll offer up Iona from Pretty in Pink, written by Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch.

So, I love Pretty in Pink for two reasons.

1. The music kicks ass. And not just the use of OMD’s “If You Leave” or Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness” or The Psychedelic Furs’ song of same name. Let’s not forget that we also have two New Order songs (including an instrumental version of “Thieves Like Us,” which accompanies Andi Walsh’s prom dress montage). And the use of Echo and the Bunnymen’s “Bring on the Dancing Horses” when rich boy paramour Blaine meets Andi at work melts me.

2. Iona.

Iona was played by Annie Potts (aka Southern feminist interior decorator Mary-Jo Shiveley of Designing Women, aka the other show I’d watch with my mom growing up when we weren’t watching Roseanne). Let’s hear what Potts, Molly Ringwald, and producer Lauren Shuler have to say about both the character and the actress.

Iona is the manager of TRAX, the record store where Molly Ringwald’s Andi works. As an independent business woman, she’d be rad in her own right. That she also makes a lot of her own clothes, puts together great outfits, can put teenage boys in their place, and serve as a surrogate cool aunt/older sister for Andi, who is at once motherless (her mother has abandoned her and daughter and husband) and mothering (she has been recast to the maternal realm by her shellshocked, ineffectual father) is not to be ignored, nor is the multi-generational aspect of this female work-based friendship. She’s also one of the few multidimensional, symphathetic, understanding, and supportive adult figures that Hughes ever wrote for a Brat Pack movie, male or female.

Yet, there are two clear limits to Iona and how Hughes configured her.

1. She’s the one who pushes Andi to go to the prom in the first place, stressing how it’s a vital, normal rite of passage not to be missed by teenagers, no matter how far outside the social margins. However, it’s hard for me to take her pitch seriously when she’s wearing this outfit in the scene.

For one, Iona wants Andi to wear her dress, which may potentially queer their friendship. It certainly evinces an openness and willingness to share, which may also suggest similar class positioning. For another, as Iona’s costumes are such a clear part of her characterization, it’s easy to read the prom dress as something campy and wonderfully disposable — something to try, rip off, throw in the hamper, and trade for some other wonderful, wacky outfit.

2. Not unlike Allison, the basketcase in The Breakfast Club who popular girl Claire makes over to sporto Andy’s clear approval, Iona dresses down to land a man. A really boring guy. A (gasp!) yuppie. This seems to be an unfortunate narrative convention of many movies outside of the Hughes canon — in order to win a man (who may be intimidated by her otherwise), an unconventional woman must make herself totally unremarkable. Again, I can only hope this is merely an outfit she’s trying on. Here’s hoping that the date ended poorly and her date left her with a record stapled to his forehead. Set an example, Iona!

And with that, I bid farewell in the hopes of sparking some midnight viewings of the 1986 classic. Tomorrow, let’s discuss Watts, the masculine female ingenue in 1987’s Some Kind of Wonderful.

A un día de la esperada presentación en nuestro país de los suecos-norteamericanos (pero residentes en París) Thieves Like Us, conversamos con Andy Grier. El vocalista, quien aporta el “norteamericano” al extenso gentilicio del trío y el distintivo en su música, nos contó sobre qué los inspiró a juntarse a tocar, adelanta cómo va a ser su show en Industria Cultural y, ojo, dispara toda su artillería contra el taquillero sello francés Kitsuné.

NNM: Primero que todo, ya es sabido que empezaron como banda porque no les gustaba la escena de Berlín. ¿Qué es lo que no les gustaba de ella y qué de nuevo trataron de inyectarle a su música?

Andy Grier: Gran parte de esa escena se basaba en la moda. No creo que hayan tenido amor por la música, sino que empezaban a hacer bandas para estar a la moda. Casi todas las bandas hacían algún tipo de electro o electrónica. Creo que les faltaba un verdadero sentido de escribir y arreglar canciones. Las letras eran a menudo pobres, no muy personales. Era como si todos le estuviesen copiando a Chicks on Speed o Peaches. Supongo que nosotros quisimos hacer algo con la electrónica que fuera bailable, pero también profundo.

Después de Berlín, se fueron a Nueva York, donde su música pareciera ser más apreciada. ¿Por qué se fueron a París, entonces? ¿Razones culturales, musicales o ambas?

Yo soy de Oklahoma y los otros dos son suecos. ¿Dónde podríamos vivir? Nos fuimos a París a trabajar con Kitsuné en nuestro disco, pero eso nunca pasó, jajaja.

¿Planean quedarse ahí o se moverán entre Nueva York y París?

No. De hecho, dos de nosotros ya nos fuimos de París. Bonita ciudad, pero con un ambiente hostil.

¿Qué ha significado Kitsuné en su carrera? ¿Comparten la estética del sello?

Kitsuné… mmm. En realidad, apestan. Tienen cierta influencia en hypear bandas, pero son incapaces de lanzar LPs. Jugaron con nosotros, nos prometieron mucho. Nos hicieron esperar un año y al final no editaron nuestro disco. Apaloosa y Stereo Total también tuvieron problemas con ellos. Kitsuné probablemente terminó con la carrera de Cazals. Gildas (Loaec, quien maneja el sello) es un imbécil millonario y malcriado que no tiene idea de música. Ni siquiera podía dar el nombre de uno de los discos de los Rolling Stones. Él maneja el sello enfocado en la moda, no en la música. En una entrevista con la revista francesa de música Tsugi, constantemente decía que le interesaba ganar mucho dinero. Vamos, venden blue jeans por 300 euros y sweaters por 800. Piensa en eso: ¿es realmente cool? ¿Es eso rock and roll? No, no compartimos su estética. Nos gustaría dejar al descubierto esa compañía como… ¡sin alma! ¡Que se vayan a la mierda!

Su música es una mezcla de varias culturas. ¿Cómo integran cada una al resultado final?

En realidad sólo hacemos música, no pensamos mucho en cómo. Tratamos de escuchar mucha música vieja y de la mayor variedad de géneros posibles.

Hay gente que dice que su música no es muy bailable. De hecho, su disco está lleno de atmósferas oscuras. Entonces, ¿cómo esperan que reaccione la gente que va a verlos en vivo? ¿Que bailen o que escuchen?

Esperamos que hagan las dos. Esperamos que los hombres y las mujeres se conozcan y se vayan juntos a la casa. O quizás esperamos que alguna gente que nos vea forme sus propias bandas.

Mucha gente en Santiago está ansiosa por verlos acá. ¿Qué podemos esperar de su show?

Debería ser ruidoso y espacial. Post rave, no sé.

¿Qué planes tienen a futuro? ¿Volverán a trabajar o se dedicarán en un 100% a la música?

¿Quién carajo contrataría a gente como nosotros en trabajos normales?

A few years back Thieves Like Us featured on a Kitsune compilation with the track “Drugs In My Body”, which was one of my favourite songs of that year (2007 I think). They seemed to disappear for a while, or maybe I just didn’t look hard enough for them, but they’ve recently remixed this song by Miss Kittin & The Hacker. Once again it appears I’ll be jotting this little ditty down come the year’s end for my top whatever.

Foge um bocadinho de nada ao nosso género de música, mas o que é bom é bom.

Hay grupos de música que solo ellos saben masticar su estilo, a su audiencia y sus formas de ver la música. Es imposible encontrarlos duplicados aún cuando exista un abanico infinito de música dando vueltas entre continentes hoy en día. Es imposible encontrar una banda que le pegue tan bien Brit Pop como Pulp o al Rock como los Rolling, pero hoy quiero hacer una excepción en cuanto a lo que significa reinventar ciertos estilos.

Thieves Like US podría ser como una especia de Revival de New Order. Sus canciones si bien son tocadas con otros instrumentos, para audiencias distintas, lugares y tiempos que en la escena de Manchster – origen del desenfreno y de los actuales rave’s que hoy en Europa ya estan prohídos – no exístian. Pero hoy puedo decir que esta banda puede ser el portavoz del renacer de este estilo, en una versión 2.0 de un estilo que no muchos saben explotar tan bien como lo fue Joy Division y New Order en la época de los 80.

Thieves Like US, es una banda extraña. La conforman dos suecos, un gringo y se hacen llamar al igual que una canción de New Order del año 84. Su estilo oscuro el new wave punkrocker  los convierte a mi gusto en una especie de nueva generación del estilo estruendoso de las bandas de Manchester y toda la escena post-punk de Inglaterra. Suenan como viejos, pero son una de las propuestas mas originales en la avalancha de información musical de la que somos espectadores día a día. Mezclan esas guitarras tranquilas con beats dance nu-wave que traen al escenario la decadencia oscura, dejando de lado casi el baile para invitarte a entrar en estas atmosferas extrañas de los bajos rasgueados y bombos tranquilos.

Se conocieron en Berlin (en el parque Mauer, en el 2002) y comenzaron a rotar entre los distintos Clubs y discos de la ciudad. 3 extranjeros en medio de un mar de lenguajes extraños y flotando a la deriva en un lugar perfecto para que lo que pasó pasara. Partieron pinchando discos desde Bowie, Iggy Pop, Krautrock hasta house franchute y Hip Hop, hasta que  un día se cansaron del tecno de poca monta que empezaba a ser la peste de la música alemana y huyeron a la gran manzana y donde grabaron su primer disco influenciado casi en un 90% por Daft Punk, sacando el Hit “Drugs in My body”,  tema que ha sufrido por lo menos un centenar de remezclas, ya sea por GangBang Deejays (modular), Cryptonites,  Rochelle y muchos mas, sacando además dos singles de 12″ en dos sellos suecos distintos, con el mismo nombre. Después de esto, publicaron otro disco, de la onda mas ambient llamado “Berlin”, grabado en el lugar del mismo nombre. Luego de haber formado parte de una de las compilaciones Kitsuné Maison,  no fue hasta el año 2008  que crearon “Play Music”, album que este frío Viernes les traigo para que disfruten un fin de semana largo al ritmo de los mejores beats del momento. Hicieron un release en Austria (Seayou Records) y una version gringa (Shelflife records) en abril de 2009. Lo raro fue que demoró en salir solamente por que los miembros de la banda vivían en distintos países y ahora despues de Play Music, se radicaron en Paris.

Yo personalmente no he podido dejar de escuchar Play Music. Puedo decir que tiene muchas canciones que sirven para animar cualquier pista de baile , y otras que son de esas para disfrutar uno solo,  con audifonos, en medio de algún lugar extraño de tu rutina.

New Pop Order la Control pe 30 octombrie – Thieves Like Us, Suie Paparude si Mes Quins

Americanul Andy Grier (voce) si suedezii Pontus Berghe (drums) and Bjorn Berglund (keyboards) s-au cunoscut intr-un parc din Berlin si asa a aparut Thieves Like Us. Nereusind sa se impuna intr-un Berlin care, cel putin cand este vorba de dancefloor, nu functiona decat in conditii de bpm constant, cei trei membri s-au relocat pe rand in New York si Paris. Si la Bucuresti, toti trei vin din directii diferite, Berlin, Paris si Milano.

Aceasta inconsistenta geografica pare sa fi facut bine trupei, care reuseste in piesele ei o sinteza a ultimelor curente din pop-ul electronic. Deconstruind liniile melodice aparent simple ale trupei putem descoperi influente care vin nu numai, asa cum este usor de ghicit , dinspre New Order (”Thieves like us” este numele unui single New Order) ci si dinspre zone krautrock si post-punk mai putin umblate. Asta a facut ca institutia mondena Kitsune, dupa ce le-a lansat primul single, “Drugs in my body”, sa ii abandoneze, considerand restul materialului prea depresiv pentru niste vremuri atat de vesele.

Primul album Thieves Like Us, “Play Music”, in plin avant al globalizarii, a fost scris, inregistrat si mixat la New York, Berlin, Viena, Londra, Rio De Janeiro si Stockholm si scos la casa de discuri Shelflife Records.

In DJ Seturile trupei ( a doua zi dupa concert, pe 31 octombrie, nu ar fi exclus sa asistam si la unul dintre ele) se poate auzi krautrock vechi, italo disco, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, gastile de la Factory Records si chiar hip-hop nou. Asta spune cate ceva despre preferintele muzicale ale celor trei domni pe care ii veti vedea live pe 30 octombrie la Control.

Esse sábado, o Clube Glória recebe o live do Thieves Like Us. O show acontece na terceira edição da festa Crash of Colors, promovida pela nossa amiga Lalai e o pelo artista plástico Rick Castro.

O trio formado pelos suecos Pontus Berghe (bateria) e Bjorn Berglund (teclados) e o norte-americano Andy Grier (vocal), se conheceu em um piquenique em Berlim. Do gosto em comum pelo New Order vieram o nome e a sonoridade da banda.

E como o próprio grupo inglês, o Thieves Like Us traça linhas melódicas com bases eletrônicas. O resultado indie-electro já rendeu pelo menos um hit, a ótima “Drugs in My Body”, destaque em uma série de blogs de música e no site Hype Machine. Caminho semelhante percorreu o remix assinado pelo trio para a faixa “Party in My Head”, da dupla Miss Kittin e The Hacker, conferindo seu groove pop a faixa original.

Além do álbum “Play Music” de 2008, o trio fez parte da compilação da Kitsuné, casa de Digitalism entre outros. A atual turnê divulga o EP “Really Like To See You Again”, lançado no começo de 2009.

Completam a pista na noite, a anfitriã Lalai, Fabilipo, Roots Rock Revolution e Kbça.
