Change…few of us like it, yet change is inevitable. Much of what changes in our lives is out of our control…the weather, other people’s thinking or attitudes, the price of milk, the stock market and the list goes on.

When it comes to our health, there are many changes we can make to take control of the outcome. We often want to improve our health but are not always so willing to make the changes that are necessary to achieve our goals.

Now, you know that I am a Health Coach and that I help people lose 2 to 5 pounds a week…AND learn to keep it off for life. I love what I do and I have seen people’s lives change for the better…very rewarding. They do, however, have to be willing to CHANGE…what steps are they willing to take to create health in their lives?

Well, if you think of eating healthy as a LOSS of lasagna, you won’t stick with the program. If you think of eating healthy as a way to increase your longevity, increase the quality of your overall health, and spend more time with friends and loved ones, then you are on the path to change. Those are the very reasons that you can successfully change your habits…your compelling “why”, in this example would be spending more time with loved ones…not spending more time eating lasagna!

Results…we all want results…whether it is in regard to weight loss, improved health, our financial portfolio, our kids’ grades in school…the list goes on, doesn’t it? We are results oriented. At the same time, to get the results you want, one needs to stick to the plan each day that will move them along the continum to the desired end…and when it comes to weight loss, there is an end point, a result…your desired weight. However, that end point is meaningless if the weight is gained back, if there are no new habits and behavior patterns established that you can use as tools to keep the weight off for life.

The program that I coach gives you that whole comprehensive approach to weight loss and lifestyle change. Follow the program, engage in the new habits, and see your life change as you never thought possible! To illustrate that point, here are some before and after pictures of some of my clients…

This is Betty and Bob before working with me to reach a healthy weight…

And now, here is Betty and Bob after losing 40 pounds each (that’s 80 pounds total) in just four months…and that includes November and December…the two months out of the year that have somehow been dedicated to eating with abandon!

Isn’t that amazing? They followed the program and they reached their goal…and they’ve stayed at their goal weight for eight months now…way to go Betty and Bob!

If you, or someone you know and love, would like to experience what Betty and Bob did all you have to do is contact me by phone or email. I can share the program with you and you can decide if it is a fit for you. It’s all about helping others get healthy and working with them to learn the simple tools they need to sustain the weight loss for life! Come on…don’t be afraid…send me an email and let’s start the conversation that will change your life! Here’s to your health!

Take care,

Goof proof…no Brainer…dummy proof…those are the kinds of tips that most of us can’t mess up. Just a simple, “Here, do this” and it works! Well, tips on getting or staying healthy abound…just log onto the internet and you’ll find a plethora of actions that you can take that, proven or not, claim to kick your level of health up a few notches.

Well here are just a few that I’ve found to be helpful over the years….

Drink water before meals and you’ll eat less, resulting in weight loss if that is your aim, not to mention staying hydrated.

Snack on fruits and vegetables like melon slices with a squeeze of lime…yum!

Choose a side of black beans or lentils over rice, potatoes, or pasta…this can lead to lower blood pressure, triglycerides and LDL (bad cholesterol)

Try new vegetables…about one half of Americans limit their intake of vegies to iceberg lettuce, potatoes, onions, and canned tomatoes! Stretch a little and go for the sugar snap peas!

If you need some crunch in your salads, go for a small sprinkling of nuts instead of croutons and you’ll get some plant protein and polyunsaturated fat…all good for you.

If I’m watching TV, I’ll pick up some free weights and do a few biceps curls, triceps, shoulders…lunges…you get the picture.

Salt…watch it! And I mean don’t watch it pour on your meal…use it sparingly or not at all…it enhances flavors but is all too often used with abandon and results in high blood pressure among other maladies over time.

There are so many more tips for staying healthy…these are just a few. I’ve learned these ideas from reading, studying and practicing nursing, coaching my clients, and spending time with those in the know. I’ve found that the simpler we all keep things, the more successful we are. Focus on the present while practicing healthy habits and the outcome will be revealed to you with feeling better, improved physical check ups and lab work, and just experiencing that “joie de vivre” that is so often missing in our busy, cluttered lives.

Some of you may be interested in healthy tips to lose weight…a slightly different proposition than maintaining a healthy weight, and I can help you with that. Just contact me and I can share with you a proven and safe approach that works…no pills, supplements, meetings, etc. Just a simple straight forward system. Give me a call!
Temptation...Will it Ever Go Away?

Temptation….sometimes it seems like it is everywhere! When you are taking steps to change you

Temptation….sometimes it seems like it is everywhere! When you are taking steps to change your life, it is especially critical to have a game plan in place so that when temptation rears its ugly head, you are prepared! But what would that game plan be? I mean, in the context of weight loss and creating healthy habits in our lives, what can we pull out of our back pocket to keep temptation at bay?

Well, some people think that the fear of feeling ashamed or guilty will work. For example…you’re at a family birthday party, the candles have been blown out, the song has been sung, and pieces of cake and ice cream are being served. You’re already imagining the guilt you’ll feel after eating the cake…the pressure to eat the cake is HUGE…you take a few bites and probably eat the whole thing.

Next scenario…same family birthday…candles blown out, song sung, cake cut…but this time you are realizing how proud you will feel upon not eating the cake. You tell your family that you love the birthday girl or boy very much and are so glad to be here to celebrate with them, but…no thank you to the cake.

I recently read an article that described just that…that the prospect of feeling guilty about a choice (eating the cake or not) will actually result in greater odds that you WILL eat the cake. On the other hand, if you thought about how proud you would feel of yourself if you say no to the cake, the odds are very great that you will NOT eat the cake. This article described a study to prove their theory (involving cake) and found this to be very true. So those who anticipated pride at resisting the cake consumed far less than those who focused on the shame of succumbing. Pride focuses on the self not the cake and on success rather than failure. Shame generally focuses on the desired object and the act of “giving in”. Anticipating pride makes us feel good and strong, while anticipating shame makes us feel pretty awful…we’re better able to say no to temptation when we feel good…not bad.

There has to be a message for all of us in this and how we view temptation…be positive! Have a vision of yourself the next day getting on the scale and feeling awesome because you just said, “No thank you”. So, remember that anticipated shame and guilt won’t help, but will only make it easier to give in. Think about the positive effects of doing the right thing and you probably will!

To Your Health!

“Mental hunger” is typically related to behaviors that we
have surrounding food.

Many of us will turn to food as a means of coping with boredom, stress,
emotions, lethargy or even, habit. For example, someone may experience “mental
hunger” every time they sit in their favorite chair in front of the TV. The
“mental hunger” will appear as a result of a habit of eating in front of the TV that has already been established. Your mind is very powerful and it can connect the TV, the chair and food – so when one of these “things” is missing your
“brain” can start “talking” to/at you. This is what is referred to as a behavior chain.

However, we can retrain our brains and we can break our behavior chains with small changes. For example, find a new spot to watch TV or change the living room arrangement so the TV or favorite chair is in a new spot. Once this new arrangement has been established, do not start eating in your chair. In fact,
eating should be done at a kitchen and/or dining room table only and without
multitasking to be “mindful.” As you progress through your weight loss journey,
it will be important to watch and listen for “mental hunger.”

“Feelings”… realize that happiness is just a feeling and you
can choose to have any feeling that you want right now, without changing your
life. I know it is hard to focus on happy feelings when you have a tragedy in
your path or you may be feeling frustration for a variety of reasons but be aware of your choice of feelings right now. Being aware of your feelings in the present moment and understanding that your mind will determine your outcomes (to eat the cheese cake or not for example) is knowledge that you can use to get the results you truly want.

Keep an “eye” on your thinking throughout each day and learn to go where you really want to go…stay on your weight loss journey…remain in maintenance…use your thoughts to your benefit…to enjoy your life!

Eat out and lose weight? No way, you say…but it’s true! You can enjoy the pleasure of eating out with your family and friends and still lose weight. It is definitely possible and you should not deprive yourself of the experience just because you’re working hard to lose weight. Here are a few ideas:

Healthy Meal Out

Often, restuarants serve too large of portions, so ask for a to go box right from the start and take half of your meal home.

Be sure to ask for the salad dressing on the side and use it sparingly…sounds so obvious, but so many of us neglect to do just that.

When ordering a lean protein entree, make sure to ask that any rich sauces be omitted.

When the bread basket hits the table, pick up your water glass instead…dinner will be served before you know it!

Substitute any starches on the plate with extra steamed vegetables and skip the butter.

Alcohol and weight loss don’t mix, so instead enjoy a glass of mineral water with a slice of lime or lemon…sip it slowly.

If you are in the company of dessert eaters, have a cup of decafe instead

Most of all, always ask yourself when confronted with temptation, “Will this help me reach my goal?” If the answer is no, don’t do it!

Plan ahead by having all these ideas ready to implement when out in a restaurant and you will be in a position of strength…in charge of your emotions and ready to continue on your journey to a healthy weight! I can help you, or someone you know on that journey…just let me know!

Are you a pet owner? Do you have a dog? If the answer is yes, one easy way to get out and move your body is to walk that dog! You’ll be doing yourself a favor and your dog as well. Getting outside and being truly present in the moment is good for your body…and your spirit! Your dog’s too…they don’t want to just lay around all day in the house! Oh…that’s my dog right over there….he’s always ready to go!

When you walk your dog (or someone else’s dog to help them out) you get your heart rate up and your circulation going too…not to mention you burn calories and build muscle…all important when you’re trying lose weight and of course just to live a healthy lifestyle! Also, you’ll meet other dog walkers and maybe make a new friend to boot!

Of course, if you don’t have a dog and never want to GET a dog, well, then find a good friend and just get going…just walk and enjoy the invigorating feeling that comes with the experience. Just don’t call your friend “Fido” or ask them to sit or stay and you should be good to go…that’s it…just get going.

Want to learn more about a habits of health system that you can use to lose that extra weight? Part of that system is walking the dog…just moving your body consistently…to help you learn how easy it can be…but that’s certainly not all. Let me know your thoughts and questions. I mean, do you want to be having this conversation a year from now? I didn’t think so…..hear from you soon and all the best!

The weekend is upon us, thankfully, and it is a time for relaxing…forget about the schedule (that is unless you work weekends!) and have a little fun. Living a healthy lifestyle, I mean actually LIVING it, not just talking about it, requires that one participates in a little exercise…best on a regular basis too. Without any exercise, you can basically count on your body, over time, becoming something that, well, you’d probably rather not discuss. You know, weak, flabby…that’s enough, huh…you get the picture.

So what will you be doing this weekend to address your body’s deep need to get out and MOVE??? I’ve got a few favorites, skiing, running, walking my dog and lifting a little weight…but when I was a kid I speed skated…yes it’s true…and I grew up in SoCal too. We do have ice here. Anyway, it was fun and competitive and most important it set me up for a lifetime of being physically active.

I wanna win!!!

When I skated, I had a coach who pushed us to run wind sprints at the local high school track. We also rode road bikes up hills and for longer distances. I’m not saying I loved it at the time…I was only 13 years old in these pictures…but as I said, it set the stage for a lifetime of wanting to be fit!

Beat her by a glove length!

So when you decide to get off the sofa and get your rear in gear, find something that’s fun for you…a little challenging is also good, but keep it small so that you will continue with the activity. The sky is the limit! Maybe it’s stand up paddling!! Never say never! Just get moving and live each day! What’s holding you back? If it is your weight, I can help you that. Just call me or email me…it’s a passion I have to help others create health in their lives…to feel VITAL and alive!!!! So, get a move on!! Let me know what you decide to do…and it better not be staying on the couch!

Inflammation…the word by itself makes me think of a wound or a cut that is red, hot, and hurts a lot! Or maybe an irritated, scratchy throat …both are cause for our immune system to go into action and bring out the heavy artillery…white blood cells…killing the bacteria to the best of it’s ability. After awhile, we’re feeling better.

The Heavy Artillery

However, this beautifully designed system that protects us can also hurt us if aren’t careful. When we eat a danish and coffee in the morning, grilled cheese for lunch and a little hot fudge sundae before bed, when you carry all that extra fat around your middle, sit more than you move…maybe even smoke cigarettes, our immune system silently goes to work…but not like the blitz we experience when have the flu.

One of the Enemies!

Rather it delivers tiny amounts of inflammatory molecules into your blood that can be identified by a special test called CRP (C-reactive protein). It measures how active your immune system is…ask your doctor to include it the next time your lab work is ordered.

We all know acute inflammation…the sore throat, etc…but are unaware of the chronic, low-grade inflammaton that attacks our health and wreaks havoc with our blood rich organs…you know…your heart, liver, brain…need I go on?

So, to counteract this unhealthy trend in one’s body, stay away from refined grains, processed foods, lots of sugar, fat, and salt…you get the picture…and if weight is a problem, I can help you with that. All you have to do is contact me and I can introduce you to a program that works…for life! Oh, and don’t forget…see your DOCTOR on a regular basis!!!

You can also learn more by reading Dr. Andersen’s Habits of Health…a great book that I highly recommend…contact me for more info. So, take charge of your health, and increase your longevity…call me and let’s continue the conversation!

Who says weight loss has to be so serious? I mean really. When people start to consider losing th

Who says weight loss has to be so serious? I mean really. When people start to consider losing that extra weight, they can actually start to wring their hands, twist their hair, or develop a sweaty brow with a twitch to boot! Where has all this stress come from?

Well, we know where it comes from. So many of our expectations come from the information, good or bad, that we are bombarded with daily via the “media”. Then factor in the opinions of others around us, along with our own fears that we can’t do it…well…it can be a very bad brew that results in doubts…and doubts immobilize…every time.

Actually, if you ask people what they do NOT like about diets, most of them have some pretty specific responses…hunger, cravings, can Ido it?…but the best one is “the first three letters! D I E!!! Geez!

Something must be done to wipe out this irrational fear and desperation when presented with the opportunity to IMPROVE your health, get off medications, feel awesome, and look darn good too! Who doesn’t want that? I’ve yet to meet anyone who when presented with those possibilities says, “No thanks…I like my expensive meds and I don’t want to be healthy…not for me.”

I’m not saying that losing weight is all fun and games, because most of us know that there can be some rough spots along the way. I’m saying that when you embark on a life changing experience like creating optimal health, take some time to assess your lifestyle, how you’re eating, exercising (or not ), and set some reasonable goals. Next, find someone to support you along the way as support is critical to success when it comes to making lasting changes…that’s where I come in…just call me!

But…back to humor…keeping laughter in your life makes the toughest of jobs doable…and on that note, here is a little laughter that I received from a client some time ago, who knows the value of a sense of humor!

Valentine’s Day…a day dedicated to LOVE! A day dedicated to LOVE and Chocolate! A day

Valentine’s Day…a day dedicated to LOVE! A day dedicated to LOVE and Chocolate! A day dedicated to LOVE, chocolate, champagne and often time rich food! Can one celebrate Valentine’s Day without these things? Well, not without the LOVE of course. However, if you’re trying to lose weight, it is especially hard to stick to a program, even the very successful 5 & 1 Plan that I coach for FREE. Well, to help you out with this dilemma I have added a few tips that can help you make the day of LOVE one that keeps you on track when it comes to weight loss…so that you can be the victor and not the chocolate! Here you go…

                                          Valentine’s Day

Well, a favorite holiday celebration of mine is coming up! It’s Valentine’s Day!! In the past, I must admit that this occasion used to, and I emphasize “USED TO” be full of many self indulges… candy, big meal, and wonderful desserts!! As I have become more fitness conscience and self aware of my health and body…I am much more careful about what I expect Valentine’s Day to be, and I challenge you to see it my way, maybe even try it, and see how you feel about yourself afterwards.

Now, for those of you on your weight loss portion of your TSFL program, please modify your program appropriately.

Begin the day with a healthy start

Take a brisk walk with your sweetheart

Add strawberries or mango to your shake and blend until its rich thick (if you are on maintenance)

Make your sweetie a Medifast egg omelet with 1tsp parmesan cheese, spinach, and mushrooms

Choose something healthy to do with a friend or your honey

Take a walk, bicycle, jog or go hiking

Go to the gym. Many athletic clubs have couples classes that day!

Play tennis, golf, or take a swim

Give the gift of health! (Instead of candy or chocolate)

Fruit Basket or the fruit of the month club that delivers fresh fruit to their doorstep (if on maintenance)

Pedometer. You can find them easily: sporting goods store, K-mart, Barnes and Noble has one as so does many online companies.

Take a trip or plan a fun excursion that you can share a new experience with your friend or someone special. It’s a chance to start new traditions and it means a lot more than material objects!

Give a funny or motivational or fitness-minded book! These are good for the heart and show your honey or friend that you care about them.

Give a scale or exercise ball, bands or bar bells, Pilate’s lessons or private trainer.

If you go out to Dinner, make healthy choices…

1) Have appetizers for your meal. I will order a salad and shrimp cocktail for dinner and follow it with a decaf coffee for desert.

2) Start your meal with a salad. Eating a salad before lunch or dinner is a sure-fire way to keep you from overeating. It will help curb your appetite and keep you from over eating in other food groups. Load up on salad and veggies. The fiber in the veggies will help you feel fuller.

3) Single out trigger foods. It may be difficult to give up your favorite snack foods completely, but buying single serving sizes or dividing a large bag into small zip-lock bags can help to remind you to watch your portion.

4) Remember to have three Medifast meals a day! By eating healthful small meals throughout the day will help keep your blood sugar even and keep cravings and hunger at bay. Mini meals are by far the best way to prevent overeating because you’ll never get too hungry to lose control and overeat.

5) Keep your “seconds” off the table! Don’t serve family style. Keep pots and platters of food off the table. This will keep you from temptation to overeat.

6) Make meat a side dish. Load up on your veggies and healthy grains as the bulk of your meal. You’ll feel fuller sooner and get extra vitamins and fiber.

7) Save half of your dinner for another lunch and visa versa. Or split it with a buddy.

8) Learn how to “eye ball” the proper, standard portion size so that you know the right amount when you eat out.

So, there you have it…tools to get you through this evening over that Valentine’s Day Dinner. Make the right choices…most of all, chose LOVE!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

“Light tomorrow with today!” Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Are you lighting tomorrow with today? I saw that quote and it brought to mind how much influence we have on “tomorrow” by what we chose to do today. Our actions today can truly determine the landscape of our tomorrow…the people we spend time with, the activities in which we participate, the thoughts in our heads, the food we eat, and the list goes on and on.

Perhaps you can imagine how important it is to truly live each day to the fullest, to make the best choices you possibly can…and when it comes to reaching a healthy weight AND staying there, I think that we can all see the importance of caring for our bodies each day so that when you wake up in the morning you are filled with vitality! So as you approach each day, fill it with actions and thoughts that allow you to reap what you sow…sow healthy habits each day and you will reap a healthy harvest in your life’s comings and goings.

We could list TONS of examples, but here are some examples of what we might want to consider sowing each day:

Move your body…exercise, walk, swim, bike…just move…and lift a few light weights as well.

Seek out healthy foods…fruits, vegetables, whole grains if you are in transition and maintenance, veggies for all of you on the 5 & 1!

Drink plenty of pure water

Avoid processed foods

Eat breakfast every day

Jump on the scale at least once a week!

Surround yourself with people who live the BeSlim lifestyle…you know…those who truly treat their bodies with the utmost respect…people who

are filled with anticipation, hope and abundance each day! They’ll be there for you when times get tough.

Those are just a few thoughts…let me know yours…what do you do each day that results in a really terrific tomorrow? I am hopeful that I’ll hear from a few of you.

I know…here we are…Thanksgiving Day…that’s the day when most of America pull

I know…here we are…Thanksgiving Day…that’s the day when most of America pulls up a chair to the family dining room table and eats…and eats…and eats! We’ve all been there at one time or another, and when we’re done overeating we all feel pretty much the same…bad…too full…stuffed.

Well, this Thanksgiving, let’s take a new look at this national holiday and get a bit of an attitude adjustment going. It is really a time about family, friends, and fellowship…even though we focus on the food and the preparations, it is really about being together. Food is a wonderful gift to be grateful for and never taken for granted, but we tend to get carried away with consumption to our own detriment.

If you are working with me on the 5 & 1 Plan and are sticking to it tomorrow, be sure to pat yourself on the back…you can do it. If you are a little unsure of being able to resist the temptations of the Thanksgiving table, let me share a few tips that can help you stick to the plan and continue to lose the weight you want to lose….

Here is a Thanksgiving Day Success Tip, for those of you who are currently on the 5 & 1 Plan: Stay on your program as close as you can. Drink a shake 1 hour before your meal. Some of you will want to follow your 5 and 1 completely… Congratulations for your desire and commitment. Some of you will feel deprived if you do not get to taste a little of your favorite foods. In this case, this is our suggestion… In addition to your lean meal…protein, salad and vegetables…use The One Tablespoon Rule: Choose 3 things that are you would like to taste. Limit yourself to one tablespoon of each of those things. Then, ‘savor the flavor’ by eating very slowly! Drink a sip of water between each bite. You can do this…..I have all the confidence in the world in you! Eat slowly…and enjoy the conversation!

If you are on maintenance….use your best judgment! Drink a shake 1 hour before your meal, and you will be less tempted to overeat! Eat slowly…and enjoy the conversation!

Here’s wishing you a Blessed Thanksgiving! We all have so much to be thankful for…..COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS AND HAVE A HAPPY AND HEALTHY THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY!!!

Take care,

Halloween is upon us and will probably be celebrated the entire weekend by some of us! That puts many temptations right under our noses…high fat appetizers, sweets, and alcohol to mention just a few. So when you hear “trick or treat” beware of them both as they can simultaneously push you right over the edge…and fall of the wagon you will. If you do, however, pick yourself off, dust yourself off, and start all over again!!! Read on…

When a person takes on a challenge or commits to making a change in their life, the possibility of falling off the wagon is something that should be viewed as a possible outcome. I have yet to meet someone who hasn’t given in to temptation while trying to lose weight and change their life. It happens and when it does, the last thing you want to do is beat up on yourself!

One way to stay on board that wagon is to be prepared. Don’t attend a social function starving … have a meal replacement or healthy snack first. That old saying, “Failing to plan is planning to fail” is very fitting when losing weight and getting healthy.

So, if you’ve fallen off the wagon, don’t despair! The best “medicine” for this is to get right back on! Stop and identify why you did fall off, learn from it so that when confronted again with the same situation you’ll be ready, and then don’t look back! Set your sights on your own personal horizon (your vision for yourself…your compelling “why” you’re creating health) and go back to work…the work of creating health in your own life…something we all want and can achieve.

So, all you goblins, have a Happy Healthy Halloween and look forward to getting up Monday morning knowing that you took charge of your health…for the better!

Where I live in South Orange County, CA our weather is usually pretty mild…big storms are few and far between…especially in October. However, the last 24 hours have been on the wild side with lots of rain and, of all things…thunder and lightening!

That sort of put a damper on my outdoor exercise hopes. Somehow I couldn’t get very enthusiastic about running while dodging lightening bolts! Running in the rain I’ve done plenty of times, but all that electricity flying through sky was too much for me!

At the same time, I couldn’t just sit here and work all day and never get a move on. So, I got in the car and drove to the gym…a whole TWO miles from my office and hit the treadmill. Let me tell you, I am not fond of the treadmill, but with a little help from my Shuffle’s sounds of music, I got the miles in and hung around to lift some weights. I am soooo glad that I went and didn’t let the wet weather derail my daily efforts to live a healthy lifestyle.

What I’d like to know is, what do you do when it rains to keep to your exercise schedule? Do you work out at home? At the gym? Do you just go out in the rain? I’m anxious to hear what you do when its raining cats and dogs (where did that expression come from anyway?)…let me know your thoughts.

As always, I’m looking for others that I can help live that healthy lifestyle that they so desire…it is within reach. As a free Health Coach I can help people lose 2 to 5 pounds a week safely and keep it off for life and feel GREAT! Check out my website and then contact me to continue this conversation of health exploration! Looking forward to it!

Sabotage…it is everywhere when you are trying to change your life…the following is taken

Sabotage…it is everywhere when you are trying to change your life…the following is taken from a book that some of you may know about…The Secret is Out The Medifast Program written by Lisa Davis, Ph.D, PA-C and Col. Bradley T. MacDonald, USMCR (Ret). As a Health Coach, I use this reference often as it is filled with useful and timely information to help my clients achieve their goals…I thought that you might be interested in learning a little more…

Losing weight and getting healthy is one of the most positive things we can do for ourselves. However, behavior changes can be frightening and difficult for us…and for those around us.

Family and friend sabotage is one of the most frequesntly overlooked and misunderstood factors in our current overweight epidemic. Self-defeating attitutdes and behaviors often drive us to act against our desire to be healthy. Sometimes our friends and family want us to stay the same as well, and their behavior can create obstacles not easily seen or solved. In fact, those around us often inflict their beliefs and insecurities on us!

How do you know if there’s a saboteur in your midst? It can be difficult or it can be obvious. A short list of red flags would be:

Criticizing

Withdrawing

Becoming overly or under involved in your weight loss efforts

And these are just a few…basically, anytime another’s behavior gets in the way of your success, there’s a good chance sabotage is at work!

Why do they do this? There are many reasons but some examples could be that they want you to remain overweight!

Some examples would be:

Your partner feels less threatened about rejection or abandonment as long as you are overweight…

Your weight problem serves as a distraction from other problems in the relationship, so there’s motivation for your weight to hang around…

Your family and friends may be unmotivated to address their own weight problem; feeling shamed by your success, they do things to derail your efforts.

Social support is a key ingredient to changing any behavior so take a look at those in your personal network. Who will support you and who will not? What type of saboteur are they? Can they change, or should you just simply avoid them? Confronting a saboteur and letting them know what your needs are is often the answer to the problem. If that doesn’t work, guard yourself against their negativity…don’t lose sight of what you’re trying to attain.

When you run into a saboteur, try these tips to manage them:

Tune in to your support network and ID true friends and foes.

Communicate your needs

Be persistent in stating your requests

Avoid saboteurs who won’t change

Do you have those delicious cookies out on the counter? What about the candy dish in the living room? Having temptations in your scope of vision can cause you to overeat. Keep food nicely stored in closed cupboards. And the best idea is not to buy foods that you find extra tempting. This is especially true while you are working hard to lose weight and change your life. It gets back to “pruning” your pantry so that its contents are nothing but healty items. So if you live with others that are still eating cookies, ice cream, and candy, keep it out of sight to avoid that temptation that can sabotage your efforts. Being on the threshold of the “candy” season…Halloween straight on through to Christmas and New Year’s…is dangerous, so keep those items neatly put away, or better yet, don’t buy them in the first place! If you found this information at all helpful, please let me know! I love to hear from you!

One important way to support our new healthy lifestyle is to get adequate, restorative sleep each night. So often, many of us do not for many reasons…one of the culprits is often caffeine consumption. About 90 percent of North Americans consume some form of it daily. Most people are not bothered by moderate doses of caffeine, about 200 to300 milligrams or two to three cups of brewed coffee a day. However, we should consume those two to three cups in the morning before noon to give the drug ample opportunity to be metabolized and no longer present in our bodies. of six Caffeine has a half-life of six hours so it will be present in our bodies all day and even on into the night especially if you have the habit of pulling into the local coffee drive through for a little “pick me up” in the afternoon!

If you have caffeine circulating in your system, it will overpower the melatonin that your body releases to signal you to sleep…the caffeine will win for sure and the result is a restless night of sleep. Your sleep cycle will be delayed by the caffeine…you might chose to stay up and watch TV making things worse. Some of us chose to have an alcoholic beverage to deliver us to a restful night, but when the alcohol wears off you’re back to your restless self.

Sleep is critical to a healthy lifestyle…stay tuned for more information about how you can improve the quality of your life by improving the quality of your sleep. Also, find this information and more in the book Dr. A’s Habits of Health which is available on my website. It is a great book and you’ll be glad that you have it handy as you navigate your way along your journey to optimal health.
