Moyock is a great little community. Local businesses are friendly and restaurants know your name when you walk in their doors. Every third Saturday the Town Market of Moyock features vendors from the surrounding area. This Saturday there is a special Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Image Advertising in Moyock Gardens Shopping Center starting at 11am. The Town Market of Moyock begins at 9am with the vendors selling all types of good things. There is a fundraiser Cornhole Tournament for Patty Brisben beginning at 2pm. Come out and join the good folks of Moyock.

Fun Chicks for Causes is hosting an event on May 19th to benefit the Currituck Free Dental Clinic at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. The clinic is a nonprofit dental care facility that accepts donations but all dentistry is on a non-fee basis. The event will include activities for children: Bouncy House, Face Painting and Children’s Crafts. There will also be a Bake Sale, Food and Drinks, Smokehouse Trailer, Silent Auction and more. Great activity in Moyock for the weekend and you don’t have to leave your backyard!

The Currituck Family YMCA is having a 4-H Indoor County Fitness Competition on Friday from 6pm -8pm. The center is located at 130 Community Way in Barco. Youth will be divided into three age categories 5-8, 9-12, and 13-18. The top three participants in each age category will win a WalMart Gift Card. 1st place $25, 2nd place $15 and 3rd place $10. Competition will consist of several fitness stations. Each station will have an exercise or workout activity. Youth will be able to earn points at each station. The Town Market of Moyock will have their 3rd Saturday Market. This market features farmers, local crafters, artisians and small businesses. The market takes place in the commons area of the Moyock Shopping Plaza where Image Advertising is located. You can visit Town of Moyock Market on Facebook and check out the vendors. This market is associated with the Buy Local Currituck program, http://www.buylocalcurrituck.com, and is also a member of the Currituck Chamber of Commerce.

The BURG is Jarvisburg’s Music and Wine Festival, held on the grounds of The Cotton Gin and Sanctuary Vineyards in Jarvisburg, NC. This year The BURG will take place on May 19th from 12-6pm. Over 30 wines from an assortment of local NC wineries will be available to sample at tables throughout the 5 acre wooded vineyard site. Live music on two stages includes: Zack Mexico, Pairadocs All Star Band and Yo Mamma’s Big Fat Booty Band. Ticket holders are eligible to ride our complimentary hayride tour through the vineyards to a special winery barrel tasting. Celebrate N.C. Small Farms Appreciation Week

In celebration of N. C. Small Farms Appreciation Week, March 25-31, the Currituck County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension in Barco will be hosting a meet and greet event for Currituck County small farm producers. The event will take place on Friday, March 30, 2012 from 4:30 – 8:00 p.m. As residents and other local vendors visit with growers, they will learn where to purchase products, such as fresh eggs, fruits and vegetables, pick-your-own strawberries or buy flowers for planting – all locally grown or produced in Currituck County. There is national initiative to ‘know your farmer, know your food’ which has gained in popularity across North Carolina as the number of farmers’ markets have increased. The number of small farms producing local foods has grown to nearly 4,000 statewide. Sustainable agriculture, such as small farms, helps grow the economy of rural communities while providing families with a healthier food supply. Christmas Time in Currituck!

It’s that time again, Moyock! It’s time to get in the holiday spirit with the 20th annual Christmas Parade at the Currituck Cooperative Extension Center. The parade will begin at 9:00am on Saturday, December 3rd. The parade will begin on Airport Road and will travel south towards Highway 158, then it will turn down Shortcut Road and head towards Aviation Parkway where it will finish up at the Currituck Extension Center.

The parade is sponsored by the Currituck Extension and Community Association, along with the Currituck County Sheriff’s Department and the Currituck County Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #89.

After the parade, you can head inside and visit Santa. You can also enjoy the 59th annual Christmas Tree Lighting! In case of rain, these events will all take place on Saturday, December 10th. Mark your calendars, Currituck! It is going to be a lot of fun!

Currituck House Carnival

When I met my friend, Leeann, we hit it off immediately. The parallels in our lives made for an instant kinship. We met at a Coast Guard event Leeann’s husband is active Coast Guard as was my fiance (now husband). This is the obvious connection. As we started sharing our stories we found another common bond, caring for an aging parent. I moved to North Carolina to care for my father, who’s congested heart failure no longer allowed him to live alone. He needed support and assistance with his day to day activities. Leeann has cared for her mother who lives with brain damage as a result from a brain tumor, providing the same support and day to day assistance. Most recently, Leeann’s mom has had additional medical complications and is now living at the Assisted Living Community, Currituck House here in Moyock. Leeann now takes on even more care-giving responsibilities, as she is an active volunteer at Currituck House and still caring for her mom and tending to all her mom’s errands, shopping and taking her to and from doctor appointments and anything else that arises. Leeann could ask for a break but instead she asks for greater awareness and more community involvement.

There is a growing number of adult children caring for their parents, 22.4 million households according to AARP. On average, an adult child caregiver can spend 18 hours per week caring for one’s parent providing companionship, running errands, attending doctor appointments and assisting with personal care. It is important as a community we fix in the mind our elders, our aging parents and honor and appreciate them individually and collectively. The task one person takes on alone can be accomplished by a circle of people creating a unified sense of accomplishment and community. Slow down and get involved, the difference you make in some one else’s life will most definitely make a difference in yours. Leeann and I, along with so many others know the simple truth of this. It’s just the going it alone that makes it difficult.
So, please feel inspired to help another, make a difference and get involved in our community.

With that said, there is a great opportunity to get involved coming up soon at the Currituck House Carnival. The assisted living program provides all the basic care and needs of its residents, but has no funding for the Resident Activity Program.

On October 15, 2011 from 11:00AM until 3:00PM Currituck House is having a “Fall Ball” fundraiser to raise money for the Resident Activity Program. This program will be able to provide entertainment, transportation, entry fees, and other services to our residents who would not have access to these events otherwise.

I am asking for the generosity of our community to provide silent auction items and/or monetary donations to help us reach our goal. Volunteers are also needed to provide entertainment or static displays to attract customers. In return Currituck House will make sure to advertise that you are a sponsor of the event.

USO of North Carolina sponsors FREE Ashton Shepherd concert!

The United Service Organization of North Carolina is sponsoring a free event in coordination with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce. So people of North East North Carolina and South East Virginia, get ready to take in singer/songwriter Ashton Shepherd’s distinctive melodic country sounds on, Friday, August 5. She will be performing at the Waterfront Park in Elizabeth City. The park gates will open at 5 p.m. There will be food vendors and a beer garden for folks to enjoy at the event. The show starts with a “to be announced” performance and Shepherd scheduled to hit the stage around 7:30 p.m.

The USO North Carolina is the longest existing USO organization in the nation. Our areas saturation with military personnel is why the USO wants to celebrate those who serve and recognize the local residents by bringing all together for one spectacular event. This event is in part to acknowledge the Coast Guard week celebrating the Elizabeth City Air Station, as well as, all surrounding military bases. It is with great pride we acknowledge those who serve. The men and women who serve in our military are a wonderful part of our area culture. May a beautiful day filled with wonderful memories be shared by all who attend.

Wild Mustangs

Corolla’s wild horses have been around for centuries. They are descended from the Spanish mustangs and now are found on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. These persistent, enduring creatures eventually adapted to the foliage available to them on the sandy barrier islands and have since the 1500’s have flourished here. The beautiful wild mustangs inhabit an eleven mile long area covering thousands of acres between Corolla and the Virginia border. Though part of this stretch is small areas of preservations many of the wild horses wander freely along the beach, across the dunes into the woods, as well as through the yards of the homes you will find along the beaches. In recent years Corolla has grown rapidly. Its two largest attractions are Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the wild horses. Because of these attractions there are more people coming to the area, which means more people and vehicles. The more cars on the road and people in the habitat can be devastating for the wild creatures that sometimes roam along the highways. The horses remained free to wander all around Corolla until the mid 1990′s, when they were moved north of Corolla into a more remote area. Now they benefit from a safer environment with no highway or speeding vehicles to endanger them.

Currituck County has always been a beautiful place to live. The city isn’t too far and neither are the Outer Banks beaches. There is a peace of mind you seem to pick up by living in this tranquil place but the most peace you will find is when you look out at the beautiful sunset as it descends on the calming sound. The Currituck Sound is a body of water that connects many different waterways including the Atlantic Ocean. The people of Currituck use the sound for many different personal, commercial, and recreational reasons. From fishing and crabbing to tubing and jet-skiing the sound has its variation of uses that brings the people together. People who live on sound front properties get to enjoy the sounds entertainment the most. The best days are the ones where you see the people gathering for a cookout while the kids dig in the sandy bottom for clams. Next time to happen to be in the area be sure to check out the beauty yourself or even take a ferry across to Knotts Island.

When summer approaches there is something many people from Currituck County look forward to: Watching mud fly at Dennis Anderson’s Muddy Motorsports Park in Aydlett, NC. Each year the infamous Grave Digger monster truck driver, Dennis Anderson, puts on a fun filled show for the whole family to enjoy. Adults aren’t the only ones that get to have a good time on the track. Anderson puts on an event called Extreme Power Wheels for the little ones. Whether you want to race your truck through the mud or just sit back in the stands and watch it happen there is a little something for everyone at this interesting event. People are raving about Dennis Anderson’s Muddy Motorsports Park!

Pungo Strawberry Festival!!
