Androtokofobi: Sjuklig rädsla för gravida män. Av andros (man), tokos (graviditet) och phobos (rädsla).

Ordet “Tokofobi” betyder egentligen inte “rädsla för gravida” utan “rädsla för graviditet”. Med andra ord är det framförallt en rädsla för att man SJÄLV ska vara gravid. Det verkar inte finnas något ord som passar när man är rädd för gravida i allmänhet, märkligt nog. Kanske är det för att man inte anses kunna vara rädd för gravida kvinnor – men det är uppenbart att det går att vara livrädd för gravida män. Därför finns numera ordet androtokofobi.

Efter att ha ägnat ett par dagar åt att läsa artiklar och blogginlägg om Thomas Beatie är det min slutsats att beatie-relaterad androtokofobi är en relativt vanlig företeelse på nätet, men att det redan innan Beaties graviditet blev känd fanns i Sverige. I “Ändrad könstillhörighet – förslag till ny lag” från 2007 visar utredarna prov på en sådan skräck för gravida män att de är beredda att tvångskastrera barn och vuxna vars kroppar inte matchar normen.

Gravida män vållar sån huvudbry att folk inte vet vare sig ut eller in. En av de allra mest uppenbara feltolkningarna måste vara att en man som är gravid också måste vara bög, som i följande bildtext till ett blogginlägg:

Thomas är alltså gift med en kvinna, och jag är inte helt säker på om “other gay men” syftar på att Nancy också är bög. Thomas är det i alla fall; alla män som är gifta med kvinnor är ju rimligtvis bögar. Nu är den texten inget av de mer elakartade fallen av androtokofobi, utan snarare ett uttryck för förvirring, men det är ur den förvirringen som androtokofobin ofta föds – ursäkta ordvitsen.

Om detta kommer jag att föreläsa i eftermiddag, klockan 15 på Stadsbiblioteket i Gävle.

Jag försöker förresten också komma på ett ord som uttrycker sjuklig rädsla för samkönade äktenskap, men min grekiska är inte så bra (Jonas, hjälp?). Jag läste nämligen också om en guvernör i Rhode Island i USA som vill förhindra den överlevande i ett partnerskap från att arrangera begravningen när deras partner dör – med motiveringen att det skulle göra relationen för äktenskapslik. Det var det äckligaste jag hört på länge.

Men Eva och Efva har äntligen gift sig efter sexton år ihop, och tretton år som registrerade partners. Gulligt. Grattis!

The media has a mind of its own but many times the actions of the media are a direct affect of those who read it. The way in which a story is spun greatly impacts the perceptions of those who read it, regardless of the content. Many have said the stereotypes of the trans identified population have been created and upheld by the media and so until bad publicity has ceased those same stereotypes will be expected. Is that to say the trans identified population is not responsible for the publicity it has had? Will it be left in the hands of the media to educate themselves and seek out the heart of the thriving and responsible members belonging to the trans identified population?

The past few years there has been a noticeable increase in the amount of content and attention relating to gender variant people. The coverage has reached beyond the borders of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans identified population and on into the mainstream population. The perspective has changed, more articles are written with more respectful and accurate language, and the readers seem to have an increased knowledge of gender variance.

One of the biggest stories I remember came out about the same time I did, the story of the pregnant man. Thomas Beatie, a transgender female to male, decided to impregnate himself after discovering his female partner was unable to during their efforts to build a family. I remember watching his interview with Oprah, I can honestly say I did not understand his choice to be public about his decision but it opened the door for conversation and education. I believe they are planning on having another child after the healthy birth of the first baby girl.

The past couple of months the news feeds have been lighting up with all sorts of gender variant content.

The first took me by surprise, an actual ongoing segment created by ABC News. The segment is an ongoing discussion about our current economic recession and the impact it has had on the gender roles of everyday American families. ABC is encouraging folks to submit their own stories about the impact the recession has had on the gender roles of their own families.

The second was Chaz Bono, the child of famous singers Sonny and Cher, announcing his transition from female to male. He must have someone amazing handling his public relations because everyone has been very respectful and it has not been smeared around as much as it could have been. I think Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation says it best,. “Chaz Bono’s decision to live his life authentically represents an important step forward, both for him personally and for all who are committed to advancing discussions about fairness and equality for transgender people. Coming out as transgender is an extremely personal decision and one that is never made lightly. We look forward to hearing Chaz’s story in his own words in the future.”

The third was an interview on Larry King Live called, “Living the Transgender Life.” The main guest was Alexis Arquette, a transgender actress, though the story was inspired by the announcement of Chaz Bono’s transitioning from female to male. Other guests included Ryan Sallans, a transman who appeared on LOGO segment on Gender Bending, Dr. Gary Alter, “a genital reconstruction expert,” Isis King, a transwoman who appeared on “America’s Top Model,” Stu Rasmussen, a crossdressing Mayor in Silverton, Oregon, Dr. Michelle Golland, Psy.D. Contributor to MOMLOGIC.COM, Ryan, a fifteen year old trans youth, and Fran, his unsupportive and rather degrading mother. The interview wasn’t terrible but it was sad to see that Dr. Michelle Golland had to correct and explain the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation as the” token straight lady of the group.” I am not dismissing the importance of an ally but rather the lack education of those on the show who identified as transgender and chose to publicly represent the transgender community. Michelle, thank you. It was also very disheartening to see Fran, the mother of the fifteen year old Ryan, continuously making fun, put down, and refer to her child by his female birth name on national television. Did they consider calling Kim Pearson of Trans Youth Family Allies (TYFA)?

The last story I have been following recently and will continue to follow is the investigation into the exact gender of young athlete, Caster Semenya. After winning her first world title for the 800 meter dash at the World Championships in Berlin her gender is brought into question. One of Semenya’s coaches actually quit because he was so ashamed for having lied to her about her gender being tested and telling her it was a doping test. Her tests came back showing she was intersexed, having both male and female parts. She followed in the footsteps of her coach, quitting in shame and embarrassment using the word “hermaphodite.” After having her gender publicly tried the eighteen year old runner returned home to South Africa to find that her fellow South Africans fully supported and accepted her and would not allow for her to be stripped of her medal. The president of Athletics South Africa, Leonard Chuene, resigned from his seat on the IAAF board to show his disapproval of the treatment of Semenya. One last note on that, it was her gender that was questioned but her actual sex that was tested. Seeing as gender is socially constructed and impossible to physically test for.

I have no doubt we will continue to see an increase in the amount of gender variant material in the media. I believe it is due to the way our society is changing their views on gender. I ask that we remain patient and continue to educate those who are misinformed with an even greater amount of patience. We, the trans identified population and allies, are responsible for first, educating ourselves, and second, holding those who release misinformed and bad media accountable as well those who mistakenly speak on our behalf.

This is my DIY head form. My first papier mache project. I’d already had the chicken wire base made, the head and shoulders and yesterday I began slapping on strips of paper and pages of last years telephone book.

Today I added a second layer to shape the head. I made lips and ears, a chin and a forehead. I used recycled box packaging, stripped of it’s slick printed outside layer.

I made the head slightly larger and smoothed out elements of the face.

The head is drying out in the 100 degree weather. Summer is a good season for papier mache.

Next I gesso it, I guess, and then paint and polish it. I’ll have fun creating a face for the hat display head. Should I, can I make it androgynous?

I may have it done in the time it would have taken for a mail order head to arrive.

I started a new book this week. It’s an autobiography of Thomas Beatie, who became famous for being the first(?)  female to male transsexual to undertake a pregnancy.

I had seen Thomas and his wife Nancy on Oprah. They seemd like really bright, good people.

As I read the sad story of Thomas’ childhood I am amazed and impressed by just how kind and mellow a person he is. His dad was a beast.

Reading his recollections of crazy intermittent abuse and the loss of his mother when he was 12 years old was very sad.

Sad and sickening, actually. I don’t understand how humans can be mean to children. I admire the way Thomas was eventually able to shape his life in such a positive way and find a loving partner. I’ll keep reading.

Can anybody feel my pain over the new season of LA Ink. It is a reality series that I really love but I can’t understand the Aubry Drama “plot” this season. It’s a big fat drag and mostly because it seems soo very manufactured. I know reality TV is entertainement. I know in some places it’s crude, rude and creepy but dang this didn’t used to be one of those places.

What happened?

Does anybody care? I never find intersting bloggy reviews of this show. Somebody help me out.

But Beatie has just given birth to his second child the past week. Shortly before that, he was interviewed by veteran journalist and media personality Barbara Walters, and explained that he wasn’t ”trying to change (people’s) minds, just asking (them) to open them”.

Beatie evidently belongs to a group of people that sees this as the norm; it is socially acceptable for couples such as themselves to be proud, rightful parents of a child. And why not? If a partner of a ‘heterosexual couple’ is sterile or physically unable to engage in sexual reproduction (e.g. if one is HIV-positive), they would enlist the services of a sperm bank or even carry out the artificial insemination manually.

So what makes Beatie and his family any different?

That his biological gender was originally female? But couldn’t one’s gender be seen as a mentality? Or maybe it’s unacceptable because it impinges religious and moral values? Then again, not all the denominations of a religion share the same views; there are gay-friendly Christian churches all over the world.

Perhaps it’s the culture we come from, then. Beatie’s ’camp’ suscribes to a different viewpoint simply because they have been exposed to a dissimilar environment. They belong to the queer world where sometimes, married men (some of them with kids) dress up in drag at night, and members of their community regularly fight for civil rights. These subcultures view some of our issues as non-issues, and vice versa, because of the way we all identify ourselves by – our culture. If we had been taught to regard it as the norm, or lived in a society that consists of individuals and families like the Beaties, we would follow a different ethos altogether.

A similar case arose in Spain - but in this case, Ruben Noe Coronado miscarried his twins. Like Beatie, Coronado has retained his female reproductive organs.

And he has planned to keep his lady parts until he is successful.

So it’s been awhile since my last post. I was surfing the net yesterday and came upon this lovely picture:

It is a guy (formerly a very pretty girl) known as Thomas Beatie; the guy that we all know as the pregnant man. It just simply amazes me (well not really) how ticked off people get when they touch upon sensitive subjects like these. Most of the time, what ticks people off is deciding whether he’s a man or a woman, or if it’s completely messed on so many levels.

Personally I think people are using the wrong words. I believe that we’ve become too comfortable associating the words “male” and “female” with “man” and “woman.” If society has not noticed already, then maybe they should open their eyes to the fact that men and women can get an operation to actually look like the opposite sex. Society needs to notice that science and technology is so advanced that it can actually cross moral boundaries. Some examples include giving 60 year-old women the ability to get pregnant and have kids; sex changes; boob enhancement; steroids; etc. And the fact that we are confusing society’s perception of men and woman with the scientific terms of female and male does not help at all. People should notice that any animal that is not human is termed male and female, not man and woman. You do not see vets trying to give dogs a sex change either. So in my response to everyone’s’ outrage that it he is a pregnant woman because he has a vagina, I say he is biologically a female, but society defines him as a man.

Seeing a pregnant man might be a shocking idea, but it’s nothing to be angry about. If that were the case, then society has not improved at all. Some new ideas are worth keeping and some aren’t. But just because you don’t like the idea does not mean you have to send hate mail. Voicing your opinions are important, but threatening people with your opinions is understanding at an immature level. People need to go beyond their own insecurities on what they think is possible because apparently, it’s at a whole new level way above what we can only begin to imagine.

So why is it called pineapple if it’s not even an apple?

With the birth of Thomas Beatie’s second child, it is important to remember to treat Beatie and his wife, Nancy, respectfully, regardless of your feelings about them. According to Magna Sententia, we treat others respectfully whether we actually respect them (hold them in esteem) or not.

As you may recall, the Beaties gave birth to their first child, a daughter named Susan, on June 29, 2008, garnering a great deal of both positive and negative attention throughout the world. To fully appreciate Thomas and Nancy Beatie and their situation, please see our previous article featuring his transition and their history together, “Treat The ‘Pregnant Man’ Respectfully, Even If You Disagree With His Choices.”

Due to so much misinformation and judgment, it bears repeating that transsexualism is not about sexual activity or sexual orientation. It is a medical condition in which the physical sex of a person’s body does not match the gender of his or her brain. Transsexual people do not choose to be transsexual; they are born transsexual. If you ever have the opportunity to meet a transgender individual, you will see for yourself the tremendous courage and strength this community has, as well as the kindness and sensitivity they possess because they have had to endure so much.

Considering the extensive coverage of Beatie’s pregnancies and births, he has an enormous responsibility to the transgender community to handle himself with grace and understanding because unfortunately, many in our society will judge all transgender individuals by his actions. For this reason, in our previous article, we expressed the hope that the Beaties would always “conduct themselves in an exemplary fashion,” and to this date, they have, and we commend them for this.

We congratulate Thomas and Nancy Beatie on the birth of their little boy, and we wish them many years of happiness together as they raise and enjoy their children. Additionally, it is our hope that America is kind to this young family and treats the Beaties respectfully, the way all of our fellow citizens deserve to be treated.

Dunia semakin tua dan semakin aneh saja.

Masih ingat Thomas Beatie? Dialah pria yang melahirkan bayi perempuan setahun lalu dan menarik perhatian dunia internasional. Kini ia kembali melahirkan anak, kali ini laki-laki.

Thomas dilahirkan sebagai perempuan dengan nama Tracy Lagondino, lalu pada masa dewasa ia mengubah diri menjadi laki-laki. Namun, ia mempertahankan organ reproduksinya, termasuk vagina dan rahimnya, karena suatu saat ingin punya anak. Ia kini tinggal bersama istrinya, Nancy (46), yang sudah punya dua anak dewasa dari perkawinan sebelumnya.

Thomas juga bercerita tahun lalu kepada pembawa acara top, Oprah Winfrey, bahwa upaya pertamanya sebenarnya menghasilkan kembar tiga, tetapi karena sesuatu hal harus digugurkan. “Meski di perut saya tumbuh kehidupan baru, saya tetaplah pria seperti ini,” kata Thomas ketika berita kehamilannya muncul Maret 2008.

Waktu itu banyak dokter, rekan-rekan, dan keluarganya menentang keinginannya untuk berkeluarga, apalagi hamil. Banyak juga yang tidak percaya kondisinya memungkinkan untuk hamil, tetapi dokter mengatakan sebaliknya, sangat mungkin.

Thomas Beatie atau yang dikenal dengan “the pregnant man” dikabarkan telah melahirkan bayi keduanya. Dia melahirkan bayinya dengan keadaan sehat pada selasa kemarin.

Anak keduanya ini berjenis kelamin laki-laki. Istrinya Nancy langsung menyusui anak lelakinya tersebut. Anak pertamanya lahir perempuan dan diberinama Susan Juliette dan lahir di Oregon tahun lalu.

Selama kehamilan anak keduanya ini, Thomas Beatie, dia merilis foto-foto kehamilan dirinya dengan perut membuncit dan wajah yang penuh janggut.

Sebagai pria memang Thomas bukan seratur persen pria. Karena reproduksinya masih sebagai wanita. Dia terlahir dengan identitas sebagai Tracy Lagondino dan kemudian melakukan operasi pergantian kelamin serta melakukan terapi hormon untuk menjadi lelaki seutuhnya.

Meski begitu dia memutuskan untuk mempertahankan rahimnya, meski secara resmi dia dikenal sebagai seorang lelaki.

Kenapa bukan Nancy saja yang hamil? Karena nancy sendiri sudah divonis tidak bisa dibuahi karena prosedur hysterectomy.

Dan setelah berhenti melakukan terapi hormon, Thomas memulai kehamilannya dengan donor sperma yang didapat dari pencariannya melalui internet.

In searching the Internet news today I came across an article pertaining to ‘Pregnant man’ Thomas Beatie gives birth for second time and my attention immediately turned toward the article.  After reading the article though I quickly realized the story is nothing but a sham.  Why is it a sham you might be asking yourself, quite simply actually.  Apparently Beatie is believed to be the world’s first pregnant man when in all actual reality he is a transgender man who still has female parts.

Thirty five years ago Tracy Lagondino was born a girl but had gender reassignment surgery, wears a beard, and is married to Nancy.  Legally he became a male but apparently he kept his female organs so he could become pregnant.

Help me understand here, if I dress my dog up like a cat and then she becomes pregnant and brings into the world puppies, should we be surprised?  No, we shouldn’t because under the get up is still a dog giving life to other dogs and Beatie’s situation is no different.  Beatie is a woman who gave birth to a baby which is what women do.  Men do not give birth but only women.  I wonder what these people are thinking by celebrating a woman as being the first man to give birth when in reality he is a she.  No matter how you dress it up, she is what she is and she is not a he.

The “world’s first pregnant man” has done it again.

Thomas Beatie, the transgender man born a woman, gave birth to his second child early Tuesday morning. Beatie and his wife, Nancy, welcomed a healthy baby boy, according to ABC News.

The couple spurred controversy last year when Thomas Beatie, who was born Tracy, gave birth to a baby girl, Susan Juliette.

Beatie, now 35, had sex-reassignment surgery, but kept his female reproductive organs. He said he decided to bear children because his 46-year-old wife was unable to.
