… Called “The Last Legion”.

Well, as one might already catch by this title, this one is one-film slideshow, e.g. a little tribute to Thomas Sangster and the film “The Last Legion“. The reason why I said “beware” is the thing with the music – well, some of you might already say that this is not even such a thing. So, if you generally are not into metal (this time: kind of harsh folk metal), you should rather try to catch the artistic effect of it…

For those who are interested, the title is called “Bragarful“, performed by one great band named “XIV Centuries“. Of course, do not interpret too much – generally I am against war (in any form), and I do not listen to this music like every day. You could referr to it as an experiment – I just like to produce a lot of different stuff with different moods (without always holding to the “message” that a slideshow could have for some of you).

So, turn up the speakers (carefully), and try to enjoy this one… I published it before, but somewhere else. As I said, I am now trying to complete my slideshow chronology here… !

It ought to come like leaves to a tree, or it better not come at all.

– John Keats

Bright Star has been getting considerable Oscar buzz. It is to be expected. It’s a gorgeous, beautifully shot piece. Gorgeous costumes. I am familiar with the work of Jane Campion with her Oscar-winning picture, The Piano. I thought that was a marvelous film. This movie on the other hand is an empty vessel put up on screen.

This movie retells the final three years of John Keats’ life. Keats played by Ben Whinshaw is a struggling poet that doesn’t have a cent to his name. He rooms with his best friend, Charles Armitage Brown (Paul Schneider). They share the summer rental with another family, the Brawnes.

The eldest daughter, Fanny (Abbie Cornish) is a free-spirited woman that loves to dress in her own creations. She is not limited to the conventions of 19th century Victorian society. Fanny is taken by the words of Keats even though the rest of the world wouldn’t know until after his death.

John and Fanny in love with each other, but their different status threaten to tear them apart. The only times they could be with each other is frolicking in the meadows, their correspondence when John gets sick or their chaste kissing sessions in private.

As I stated earlier, this is a beatufiul film. I wouldn’t expect less in a Campion film, but something about the romance between these star-crossed lovers rang false. There was no longing for each other, no heartache. Some scenes were supposed to convey that, but it was forced.

It felt empty. I didn’t care about the lovers. Do they cossumate their union? Will they get married?

This was supposed to be a tragic romance. The only tears that were coming out of my eyes were those from boredom. I wondered when is Keats going to die. (It’s not a spoiler. It’s history.) I felt the same way like in Titanic. That says a lot. Also, I believe that Paul Schneider was horribly miscast on the Scot Brown. Every time, he was on screen I wanted to jump into the screen and punch him in his padded gut.

Judgment: A disappointing, hollow romance that should have been forgotten in the course of history.

Rating: **

I don’t really think the film will be that good at all, but BUT… I love films that are set in this time period. Most of them are rubbish, but the costuming is just devine and usually the colors are beautiful.

The film is directed by Jane Campion (who one an Academy Award for best original screenplay in 1994 for the film The Piano)

Ben Whishaw (from Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) plays the young John Keats. He’s pretty nice to look it, in my opinion.

ALSO.. the little red-headed boy in the trailer, I believe is the little boy in Love Actually (Thomas Sangster)… he’s no so little anymore!

Welcome ! You are viewing my slideshow # 13 – “Bright Light”.

Well, we are almost though with my so-far produced slideshows – one step before the “grande finale”… ! Here we have a very, very nice slideshow that I called “Bright Light” – both fitting the name of the original song that I used here, and of course: the overall mood. At least I feel this certain enlightenment, the glorious mood that gives you a little bit of your energy back.

Well, after such words it may be no wonder that I call this one my overall favourite. Other did not think this way however, but I can not say anything else – if you would ask me which is my best slideshow, or at least the one I like most, personally – then it would be this one.

Now, I raised the expectations, I guess… so risk a look for yourself. All I can say is that this one had cost me a lot of effort – you should listen exactly, for example there are some additional sound samples out of movies that came to an use here. And, another “first timer” here: I used pictures that I created myself – well, not the images, but the collages (cropping, set up a different background). I think that the outcome looks fantastiqué… !

And, I am also very proud of the outro in this one. This is the first time I used three audio tracks in a show. So, let the show and the magic begin… !

One costume drama due to be released this year which I hadn’t heard much about up to now is Bright Star, focusing on the relationship between poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne. This movie is written and directed by Jane Campion, the acclaimed New Zealand director whose previous films include The Piano and The Portrait of a Lady. Ben Whishaw plays Keats, with Abbie Cornish as Fanny and Thomas Sangster, who played the little boy in Love Actually, as Samuel Brawne.

I’ve seen brief mentions in news reports that it’s expected this film will be shown at Cannes this year and possibly released in the UK around June, although there is no firm date as yet. Now I’ve just noticed that there is an official production scrapbook site, which features Jane Campion’s own photographs and brief handwritten notes from her production diary, as well as a video of her giving an acting workshop to children trying out for the part of Toots, which eventually went to Edie Martin. I especially like the love letters and Valentines reproduced on this site.

Mr cedric brown has just lost his wife & is now left with his seven children who misbehave so much that all the nannies have run away. Now he is told by a mysterious voice that he should get nanny mcphee who is a magical woman with special powers. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 05/06/2008 Starring: Emma Thompson Kelly Macdonald Run time: 99 minutes Rating: Pg

With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, Nanny McPhee is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda children’s books of the 1960s, Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who’s under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown’s raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they’ve come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colorful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned Devine. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness. –Jeff Shannon

AKA: Eine Zauberhafte Nanny – Laufzeit: 97 Minuten – Land: USA, UK Mr. Brown (Colin Firt

AKA: Eine Zauberhafte Nanny – Laufzeit: 97 Minuten – Land: USA, UK

Fairly tales – how wonderful they can be . Pinocchio is a well known story all over the world.

Fairly tales – how wonderful they can be . Pinocchio is a well known story all over the world. If I am to count the numbers of time I have read it – I won`t be able to – having in mind that I love also the Aleksey Tolstoy`s version Buratino’s adventures. Which I happen to like even more. When I first saw the movie I was quite surprised – Pinocchio is the ultimate coming of age story and I was curious to see a new movie based on it. Moreover when I got the movie I did not even know who stars in it and was quite surprised ( plesantly of course ) to see Thomas Sangster in the credits at the beginning of the film. Unfortunately it turned out that his role is a minor one and he is not the one in the role of Pinoccio – but then I am sure that all of his fans will be delighted to see him acting – and boy has he grown. He is also on the movie poster – which is not surprising as many would choose the story just because he stares in it .

Instead Pinocchio is played by the young Robbie Kay – who was unknown to me, but after watching Pinocchio, I can say for sure that I am going to be following his career. Robbie is very talented and fits perfectly in the role of Pinocchio. His facial expressions, voice and overall acting are sure to make an impression on everyone who sees the film. He has some expirience in movies as he starred in “Fugitive Pieces” as the young Adam and in the TV production “My Boy Jack” and if you have seen those, you would remember him from there.

I am still unsure if Bob Hoskins was the best choice for the role of Geppetto. For some reason I can’t associate him with fairy tales and as a matter of fact, I am also not fan of his performance in “Where Eskimos Live”. ( which is the film I saw him in for a very first time ) Overall the casting, with exeption of the minor role of Thomas Sangster and Robbie Kay, seemed quite odd to me. Yet that did not stop me from enjoying the movie. In fact I was glued to the screan realising how many, many of the things in the story can be applied directly to real life. ( To my life if you will, or yours ) I doubt that I was really able to understand that at the age of 6 or 7 when I must have read the book for a very first time.

Oh I am not going into details about the story as I am sure you all are familiar with it. May be some of you don`t know much about Buratino, but everyone has heard of Pinocchio. I also did not quite like the way the story was presented. To me the director used rather odd characters and settings – modernistic maybe …now if I wanted a modern improved version of Pinocchio I would just watched “A.I.” starring Haley Joel Osment which to me is the best interpretation of the story ever made. This version is also in English which was fine with me – but quite a few people think that for such a story, Italian with English Subtitles would have been a more appropriate choice. I can`t fully agree with that as it would have been much harder on the actors and would have affected the performance.

The whole movie is over 3 hours long which is typical for made for TV productions. Perhaps you remember the original of Entrusted. ( Starring Thomas Sangster as well ) The movie is quite enjoyable, you just have to ignore a few . . . weird things. Then maybe you would appreciate it more just for their acting. For example I am not fan of the movies produced by Tim Burton, while many other people liked them. So its up to you, but I recommend that you see this movie. No matter how old you are I am sure that you will find something in it of value . . . something special, just for you.
