So here it is. I have been on Illustrator drawing up ideas all damn day, and I got as far as 2 designs. This one got finished and submitted, after about 6 hours, and a further 2 hours trying to upload to bastard thing. On my weekly post about Threadless, I decided to feature today, Midnight Showing by Dan Rule. At first glance this is just a t-shirt with a nice pencil drawing on it, but what makes this design stand out, it´s the great use of glow-in-the-dark ink, that transforms this desolated place in the memory of the drive-in cinema that used to be there. So this is going to be a post about stuff I was going to do but didn’t and can’t remember anymore so instead I’ll write a ditty about what I do remember for… posterity’s sake. Er

First, this morning I woke up with an epiphany about how friends aren’t real friends. It was more legitimate than that I can promise you, maybe if you guys thought about it you’d come to the same understanding I undoubtedly have.

Secondly, I stalk my friend who reads my blog on her Threadless account occasionally (I have a lot of hours logged on the interwebs). One post she made was about my senior portrait and there was a girl there who said she wanted to hug me. The first time I found it (I don’t remember how. Shit happens the more time you spend on the internet. Literally, so don’t spend too much time on it.) I was completely exhausted and feeling shitty, and it totally made my day. I then tried to be nice to said friend except the real world makes you a bitter man and such a desired connection is never established in a timely fashion… only spontaneously. Anyways I felt like making myself feel good for once and found the post successfully (again, I don’t remember how I did it. History could tell me but I am not that interested in my Google skills). The girl who said I was cute is also, in fact, cute which makes this all the better. She’s a Design student and has a boyfriend who also looks sort of artsy. I was depressed for almost a microsecond before my ultra-super-high-tech-defensive-mechanism–inner4chan–kicked in. Anyways, I then found my friends new Threadless account where she posts blogs JUST LIKE I DO. With a few differences:

1. Her posts are either interesting things she’s doing or personal problems she needs help with.
2. She has friends.
3. She doesn’t post every fucking day with a 10000-word post (because of #2).

The issue at hand is this. I am seriously insulted that instead of consulting me she desired the compassion of her online artsy friends. By that I mean I’m insulted because she also probably thinks I’m TOO STUPID to solve her little problems. Little. That’s okay though, I get good enough test grades to not take too much of a blow from such an EXplicit and vile discourtesy. But on a serious note, you should never go to the fucking art people with your emotional problems. There’s a reason why artsy people are such emotional wrecks… it’s because they’re fucking emo.

Anyways I thought I’d note that this blog is amazingly well-thought out by myself. See, chances are she’ll never read this crap so I can say whatever I want. And if she does read it she’s a loser! So I win in both cases. I wanted to make a math joke about probability but I am not very good at it and haven’t read chapter 9 yet. C’est la vie.

My last post about Threadless submissions is about the first design I sent in. I thought our stormtrooper cartoon would look good (I think the image looks much better on the shirt than the other two designs) so I tried that.

The design had too much text on it and was rejected. I was interested in seeing how the whole voting process worked though, so I removed the text and resubmitted.

This wasn’t the smartest thing to do since without any words there’s just a stormtrooper standing there. Who is going to look at this and think ‘It looks like he’s got some sex toys on one end of his blaster and I see how that contrasts with the other end’? No one — except Rob

From the newly printed t-shirts on Threadless, I had no choice but to feature We´ve Got Some Work To Do Now by Travis Pitts. This design had a great score of 3.92 out of 5 when it was submitted for voting. The post-apocalyptic scene is great, the style of drawing is great, the Scooby Doo reference just makes it even better, and details like the RIP heart on the van are just brilliant. I decided to ask the question: Are t-shirt design competitions good or bad for designers?

In my opinion i guess its both, depending on the t-shirt design competition you enter right? Lets see theres, Threadless, Allmightys, Teetonic, Design by Humans…just to name a few.

I must admit i favor Threadless in many ways.

I frequent the website probably daily, how do you feel about the type of exposure one gets from winning a t-shirt contest or the prizes?

På sidan Threadless.com kan man hitta en mängd fantastiska t-shirts. Eller egentligen är det väl trycken som är fantastiska. Det sköna med sidan är att det är vanliga dödliga – som du och jag – som har designat trycken. Dvs så kan vem som helst skicka in sin egna design. Sen om man har tur (eller är jäkligt grym) så kan man få sina tröjor sålda där!

Beautiful toy boxes / toy chests available at not the greatest of websites (the woman on the right gives me the hibbie jibbies – thank goodness there’s an optional close button). Ok so back to the good stuff, WoodToyBox.com provides a great array of personalized wooden toy boxes.  You just choose the type of wood (oak, cherry or espresso) and select the font style.  The site also offers 4  different handpainted toy boxes.

And, let’s not forget that all toy boxes are 100%: handcrafted, wood & guaranteed.  Beat that other toy box maker!

I would love a dark cherry alphabet toy box for mini we… but, I’d love to choose another alphabet style.  What would be awesome is if WoodToyBox.com would provide a user generated (in general or by popularity) engraving option.  Similar to Treadless (gosh, I LOVE that site).  I’d pay extra for that option.  That would be taking the idea of crowdsourcing to the consumer product level.  Love it… WoodToyBox.com please consider.

psst…they’re also made in the USA.  That aspect feels especially good to write about on Veteran’s Day.

On my weekly post about Threadless, I decided today to feature one of their new prints, Alien Autopsy by Chris Rowson.This design has a clear reference to Space Invaders, one of the most popular arcade games ever created, with a place in the history of video games, and that still is a major influence on a lot of people who grew up during the 80´s. There are thousands of t-shirts made on this theme, but this one still manages to be original and creative. The contrast between the realistic, detailed illustration of the scene, and the simple pixelated look of the alien, really works to maximize the concept behind this design.
