A little late, I know, but I was saddened to read of the death of MCA (Adam Yauch) over the weekend. Beastie Boys were (and still are) a band that I spent many a hour listening to at various points during my teenage years (Hello Nasty and Ill Communication in Sixth Form and Paul’s Boutique whilst at University); they never took themselves too seriously and never relied on hip-hop clichés in their lyrics (or at least they didn’t use them in a serious manner) which acted as an alternative to much of the genre’s bravado.

But it was the band’s approach to music videos that was responsible for originally converting me into a fan – many of which were directed by Yauch, under the pseudonym Nathenial Hörnblowér. The videos for Intergalactic (an obvious choice), Triple Trouble and Ch-Check It Out and Sure Shot (co-directed with Spike Jonze) were all in regular rotation on MTV2.

However, its another directed by Yauch, Three MCs and One DJ (displayed above), that remains my favourite. Filmed in a rehearsal space with a fish eye camera lens, granted its not one of their most elaborate videos (compared to, say, Sabotage), but it catches what they’re all about – goofing around, not taking themselves too seriously whilst making great music.

So with that, RIP MCA.

  • There was a time when we would joke around and say things that were disrespectful of women and think that it was funny, or that it wouldn’t hurt anybody, or that it would be taken with a grain of salt. Then it became clear that that wasn’t the case, and we had to go through the process of taking a step back and realizing how those things affect other people. The lyric in “Sure Shot” is just a statement of that. Even on the last album there aren’t any lyrics that are disrespectful of women, but we went an extra step on this album to make a statement.
  • I think there are a lot of misconceptions in society in general about what actually brings happiness, we’re caught up in all these ideas that having a lot of money or having somebody beautiful to have sex with or having some cool objects, having a cool car, cool stereo or whatever is gonna make us happy. And those things actually don’t bring us happiness. I’ve learned a tremendous amount about how compassion or altruism actually brings a person happiness.
