The Memphis Police Department’s Gang Response and Intervention Team (G.R.I.T.) is presently conducting a thorough and comprehensive intelligence program. During the course of their research, G.R.I.T. has identified a number of gangs and gang-related activity in the Memphis area. Look at graffiti around Memphis gangs are here and they are making their presence known. The emergence of gangs in Memphis can be linked to places like Los Angeles, Chicago and other large cities. The emergence of gangs has also been linked to problem youths from other cities being sent to Memphis to reside with relatives. As a result, these problem youths also bring with them old gang affiliations. For the most part, gang structure is fairly loose. Leadership is usually assumed by a member who demonstrates dominant control at any given time. Most times, members are males from 13 to 28 years old, but police are also seeing female subsets of existing Memphis gangs. Gangs are not just comprised of African-American youths, gang members represent all racial and ethnic groups.

Hand Signs
Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13)

Gang members hang out together. They then seek to engage in, and encourage, a growing cycle of criminal activity. Through names, symbols and leadership, they claim a specific territory or turf. Gang members wear specific apparel to show gang affiliation or “colors”. They dress in a basic style or color chosen by gang leaders. Members wear professional sports team jackets, caps and shirts, so identifing them is more difficult. Some are easily spotted by tattoos or clothing styles. Their personal belongings may be covered with gang names or symbols. And, of course, anyone who is often seen with known gang members or has a record of gang-related arrests is certainly not above suspicion.

The first sign of gang activity is graffiti, it’s the underground newspaper of gangs and it serves several basic purposes. It identifies the gang and their territory, graffiti serves as a warning and challenge to rival gangs. And it glorifies the gang in general. Graffiti can also point out which gangs are fighting with each other. The Memphis Police Department has developed a PARENT NOTIFICATION LETTER to inform parents when youths have met criteria that suggest gang association or membership. Officers will emphasize the importance of immediate intervention.

That’s a longwinded title I suppose. But that’s really the main thing I’m trying to say and I want to make sure that point isn’t missed. If you haven’t seen her actions against BYU then watch this quick clip.

Who would allow that animal to put on their uniform? How was she not ejected from the game before she had completed putting together that highlight reel? If the refs didn’t catch it, why didn’t a coach pull her? Honestly, she should have been arrested. You can’t just grab someone by their hair and yank them to the ground unprovoked. Not in a college soccer game, not in the mall, not in church. How did she let her emotions get so much control of her that she would allow herself to act like that? I think the answer is pretty simple. She’s doesn’t see what’s wrong with hurting people. The thought of injuring other players doesn’t give her cause for concern. She’s basically a thug.

I wouldn’t go out on a limb with all of that if she hadn’t sat down with the New York Times and made statements like these.

I think the way the video came out, it did make me look like a monster. That’s not the type of player I am. I’m not just out there trying to hurt players. That’s taking away from the beauty of the game. And I would never want to do that.

Oh so it’s the way the viiiiideo came out. Not the way she was acting.

I definitely feel because I am a female it did bring about a lot more attention than if a male were to do it. It’s more expected for men to go out there and be rough. The female, we’re still looked at as, Oh, we kick the ball around and score a goal. But it’s not. We train very hard to reach the highest level we can get to. The physical aspect has maybe increased over the years. I’m not saying it’s for the bad or it’s been too overly aggressive. It’s a game. Sports are physical.

Oh, it’s because you’re a feeeeemale.

And yes Elizabeth, you’re right. It’s a game. So how does that promote your argument?

And yes Elizabeth, you’re right. It’s physical. But it’s also soccer. In soccer players pretend the other guy injured them. They don’t try to injure the other guy.

And I love how she resorts to the Chris Brown defense

I look at it and I’m like, ‘That is not me,’.

Just saw Harry Brown at the cinema which is a British crime thriller which was directed by Daniel Barber. The film stars Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, Jack O’Connell and Liam Cunningham.

Michael Caine plays the main character Harry Brown. The story is about how he seeks revenge after his friend is killed by the group of thugs.

The film puts across very serious and relevant messages to the audience about gang crime.

I really enjoyed this film- it felt very genuine and realistic because of its ‘gritty/raw’ style. The film is very violent, has a lot of bad language and hard drug use but it does make the film more realistic.Michael Caine was very good in this role and i think that this is one of his best performances in most of his recent films.

This film is worth seeing in you like British thrillers or films such as Gran Torino, Kidulthood and Adulthood.

Film Rating: 8/10

So I’m shopping at the grocery store with the baby girl in her carrier in my cart, and I turn the corner into an aisle to find two thug-looking kids blocking it, loudly perusing the soda section. Their saggy pants were in dire need of belts, their fake chains were blinding, and their sideways hats sported shiny silver Cadillac logos.

As I cleared my throat and authoritatively said, “Excuse me,” they looked at me with disdain for having the nerve to interrupt their pop shopping. Still, they grudgingly moved out of the way. As I rolled my cart past, one loudly whispers to the other, “Dude! Dude, come here!” I couldn’t wait to hear what was so urgent, thinking it could have been the perma-puke stains on my shoulder that caught his eye. “Come see how cute this baby is!”

Did I mention how much I love thug-looking kids with saggy jeans, giant chains and sideways hats?

Reportedly written by Sherry Hackett, the widow of Buddy Hackett.

“WE NOTICED”

President Obama:

Today I read of your administration’s plan to re-define September 11 as a National Service Day. Sir, it’s time we had a talk………

During your campaign, Americans watched as you made mockery of our tradition of standing and crossing your heart when the Pledge of Allegiance was spoken. You, out of four people on the stage, were the only one not honoring our tradition.

YES, “We noticed.”

During one of your many speeches, Americans heard you say that you intended to visit all 57 states. We all know that Islam, not America has 57 states.

YES, “We noticed.”

When President Bush leaned over at Ground Zero and gently placed a flower on the memorial, while you nonchalantly tossed your flower onto the pile without leaning over.

YES, “We noticed.”

Every time you apologized to other countries for America’s position on an issue we have wondered why you don’t share our pride in this great country. When you have heard foreign leaders berate our country and our beliefs, you have not defended us. In fact, you insulted the British Crown beyond belief.

YES, “We noticed.”

When your pastor of 20 years, “God-damned America” and said that 9/11 was “America’s chickens coming home to roost” and you denied having heard recriminations of that nature, we wondered how that could be. You later disassociated yourself from that church and Pastor Wright because it was politically expedient to do so.

YES, “We noticed.”

When you announced that you would transform America, we wondered why. With all her faults, America is the greatest country on earth. Sir, KEEP THIS IN MIND, “if not for America and the people who built her, you wouldn’t be sitting in the White House now.” Prior to your election to the highest office in this Country, you were a senator from Illinois and from what we can glean from the records available, not a very remarkable one.

YES, “We noticed.”

All through your campaign and even now, you have surrounded yourself with individuals who are basically unqualified for the positions for which you appointed them. Worse than that, the majority of them are people who, like you, bear no special allegiance, respect, or affection for this country and her traditions.

YES, “We noticed.”

You are 9 months into your term and every morning millions of Americans wake up to a new horror heaped on us by you. You seek to saddle working Americans with a health care/insurance reform package that, along with cap and trade , will bankrupt this nation.

YES, “We noticed.”

We seek, by protesting, to let our representatives know that we are not in favor of these crippling expenditures and we are labeled “un-American”, “racist”, “mob”. We wonder how we are supposed to let you know how frustrated we are. You have attempted to make our protests seem isolated and insignificant. Until your appointment, Americans had the right to speak out.

YES, “We noticed.”

On September 11, 2001 there were no Republicans or Democrats, only Americans. And we all grieved together and helped each other in whatever way we could. The attack on 9/11 was carried out because we are Americans.

YES, “We noticed.”

There were many of us who prayed that as a black president you could help unite this nation. In six months you have done more to destroy this nation than the attack on 9/11. You have failed us.

YES, “We noticed.”

September 11 is a day of remembrance for all Americans. You propose to make 9/11 a “National Service Day”. While we know that you don’t share our reverence for 9/11, we pray that history will report your proposal as what it is…a disgrace.

YES, “We noticed.”

You have made a mockery of our Constitution and the office that you hold. You have embarrassed and slighted us in foreign visits and policy.

YES, “We noticed.”

We have noticed all these things. We will deal with you. When Americans come together again, it will be to remove you from office.

Take notice.

Psa 118:8-9 NIV It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. (9) It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.

I was a kid for a while. That was a rough time for me. I grew up in a tough neighborhood near a Sizzler. The kids in my neighborhood were violent and they wanted me to join their gang. They made me do all sorts of gangster things like steal cigarettes from my parents. I was told if I wanted to join the gang, I had to build a hideout. I used all of my allowance to build a pillow fort in my basement. I used thumb tacks to keep the sheets pinned to the wall. It was hard-core. They told me that if I wanted to join their gang, I’d have to commit a crime. “I stole a car,” I said. Lying was the crime. I was in the gang. I was slanging drugs and banging thugs. I held my Nerf suction cup dart pistol with a sideways gangster grip. It was tight…the grip, I mean; I didn’t want to lose the gun. I was the original, genuine thug; an OG…T. I didn’t even own a belt so my pants would always sag gangsterly (the point at which they would fall off). One day, a Catholic priest called me and said it was time to hang it up and cut the crap. I said that my gangster friends would do harm unto me and my sheet fort if I left. He offered me full protection in his house of worship and a job at the Sizzler. The priest was banging, alright; banging all the boys. I quit the gang. They said they were going to miss me and that they were sad to see me go. To tell you the truth, I miss them, I miss them a lot. Word to your brother.

Is a new narrative starting to build? Is David Axelrod beginning to emerge as Geppetto to President Obama’s Pinocchio?

Obama fans are in a tight spot. As the White House turns ever harsher and more divisive, supporters are scrambling to explain why President Obama sounds so very different from Campaigner Obama. There are two possible explanations, neither of which is flattering. The first is that Obama was insincere on the campaign trail. The second is that his advisors – David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel — are in control. The latter view is bound to take hold and it will not boost the president’s flagging popularity ratings.

Many who voted for President Obama feel deceived. When he said in Florida last year “we cannot afford the same political games and tactics that are being used to pit us against one another,” people believed him. When he extolled “rejecting fear and division for unity of purpose,” people believed him. When he said on election night “I will listen to you, especially when we disagree,” people believed him.

Why has the president left those admirable promises behind? Why is his administration going after Fox News, the Chamber of Commerce, insurance executives, AIG management, the drug industry, the Chrysler bondholders and any and all who oppose his policies?

Many believe that Obama is being manipulated by his political adviser David Axelrod and his Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. The aura of Chicago politics drifts over the capital like a smog. Ironically, the nasty assaults may be calculated to offset a growing view that the president is not tough enough to stand up to his detractors. He already looks weak as he “dithers” on Afghanistan, repeatedly blames George Bush for his problems and kow-tows to foreign leaders while apologizing for our nation’s past. Surely, though, it will not help Obama if the country begins to suspect the president is not his own man. Being seen as a follower in his own White House will surely magnify an unhealthy aura of inconsequence.

In other words, Obama risks inheriting yet another problem left behind by President George W. Bush. — For years, those on the left portrayed Bush as the willing puppet of political advisor Karl Rove and Vice President Dick Cheney. The image of Rove and Cheney directing traffic for an inadequate president was one of the most enduring of Bush’s presidency. Their power undermined Bush’s authority and worse, made him look simple.

Nothing could be more damaging for Obama, who is assumed by his fans to be an intellectual giant when compared to George W. As the public starts to question how much time the president is spending on fund-raisers (26 events since taking office compared to only 6 for G.W. during the same term in office) or on his golf (24 rounds so far– tying G.W.’s entire presidency), they may also ponder who’s doing the real work when the president goes AWOL.

For a host of reasons, the narrative will build. A March piece in The New York Times described the Wednesday Night Meetings of the Obama varsity conducted by David Axelrod. The piece asserted that Axelrod “helps decide which fights to pick and which to avoid, making him a leading voice in setting the political tone in Washington.” The Times reported that Axelrod had “hoped to keep (the meetings) under wraps so he would not suddenly be overrun by requests from people hoping to dispense advice.” Perhaps his political antennae also anticipated that he would begin to emerge as Geppetto to Obama’s Pinocchio.

Similarly, The Times has described Emanuel as “more chief than staff” and the author of Obama’s “do-everything-at-once strategy”. With his Rottweiler reputation, he is thought especially responsible for the increasingly belligerent White House sound bites.

Those who see history repeating itself can draw parallels between Axelrod and Karl Rove. Like Rove, Axelrod worked on numerous political campaigns and dreamed of someday landing in the White House. He was involved in the campaigns of John Edwards, Senator Chris Dodd and Representative Rahm Emanuel and, like Rove, is well known on Capitol Hill. Both men are driven by ideology as well as the urge to win. Similarly, both Cheney and Emanuel served in Congress, occupied important positions in former White Houses and have sizeable rolodexes.

A 2001 Time magazine article described Rove as “the busiest man in the White House… It was Rove who shaped the agenda, message and strategy that got Bush – the least experienced presidential nominee of modern times – into the White House.” They might want to reprise that story; Obama’s credentials set new records.

POSTED BY KIM — I’ve added a new category to our blog: plant thugs. We all have experience with them, and today I’m going to talk about one of my thugs: Tanacetum feverfew. When I first saw this sweet little face in the nursery, I couldn’t resist. Do you blame me?! Come on! It’s adorable!

And then it re-seeded. Oh…my…goodness. Feverfew *everywhere.* So now when I see its green leaves sprouting in the ground, I beat it to the punch — pull it up (and pull, and pull, and pull), and maybe leave one or two plants that will flower so I can enjoy them in small quantities.

Other plant thugs might include:

Lily of the valley

Chameleon plant (Karen Collins has a funny story about how this got started in her garden — she asked for a piece from a neighbor and planted it herself! – and the years she has spent trying to remove it)

Chinese lantern

Campanula

Mint, of course

Annual poppies

Ladybells

Cleome

Now if you love it, a thug is not a thug. I have campanula that has completely overtaken sections of my garden, but it’s a nice groundcover that keeps the weeds down, and it flowers on top of it — I love it. Same with annual poppies — I ADORE annual poppies. I don’t care where they come up, I’m keeping them.

You can see in the picture below where I started yanking out sections of the feverfew. Live and learn!

<img class="size-full wp-image-1911" title="DSC09696" src="http://sugarcreekgardens.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/dsc09696.jpg" alt="Don't be fooled by its sweet demeanor.

This post was prompted by observing that for the first time since I began blogging, posts about police misconduct have jumped to the #1 most-read posts on the whole site. While these posts are important and have always had a small number of regular readers, it is very strange to have them jump from the lower levels of the list to the top, so I spent a bit of time trying to figure out why.

Turns out here are a lot of reasons.

A “school Resource Officer” (A.K.A. “cop”) beat a special needs kids senseless because the kid’s shirt wasn’t tucked in, and it hit the press (it was caught on a surveillance camera).

The National Police Misconduct Statistics and Reporting Project released its monthly report, with some rather alarming statistics, such as the fact that cops are 8 times more likely to commit homicide than civilians, and four times more likely to commit rape. Of course, their sentences are only half as long when they’re convicted.

This month, three more police departments are facing investigation for massive wrongdoing: Dolton, Illinois; Greece, New York; and Spring Lake, North Carolina. In all three cases, the misconduct includes falsifying evidence, brutality, and perjury by police officers.

“School Resource Officers” are also having their time in the spotlight, with 5 cases of school cops being involved in pornography and sex scandals with the students they are supposed to be protecting, and a case of a cop using a taser to prevent a kid from making a cell phone call in the hallway at school.

The scary part is that these are only the events that actually made the news. Considering how hard it is to get police misconduct reported by the press, I have to wonder how much more there really is.

So think about it: when a cop pulls you over, or approaches you on the street, what is your first gut reaction? Do you feel safe and secure, or are you afraid and nervous? So who’s protecting who here?

Although I can’t stand Megan Kelly of FOX NEWS she’s got a pretty good Exposé on A.C.O.R

Although I can’t stand Megan Kelly of FOX NEWS she’s got a pretty good Exposé on A.C.O.R.N.. They sued so that didn’t have to pay a minimum wage. Although they are Pro-Union they used Anti-Union tactics to squash an attempt by workers in Dallas to start a Union. The A.C.O.R.N. cluster sounds like a bunch of hypocritical nuts to me. Basically they are thugs who bus people in to cause trouble, riots, discontent, force Banks to give Loans to people who can’t make the payments (because of a simple fact, they can’t afford the mortgage and are not qualified), complain about the supposedly “Predatory Business Practices” (ever heard of reading a contract first? Duh!) and extort protection (protection from them) out of Business. They should be prosecuted under R.I.C.O. Statues.

These same people were going to help with the 2010 Census? Give me break! All ties and contracts should be severed quickly, swiftly and completely with this group.

These same tactics of extortion are used by people like Jesse “Give me money or I’ll say you are Racist” Jackson and Al “burn baby, baby burn” Sharpton.

Now Obama sharpened his teeth as a Lawyer and “Community Activist” with A.C.O.R.N.. Hmm…
